From The Editor's Pen

Hello His Favor Magazine Readers. I thought long about what I would say in this particular issue. Being our first Special Edition of 2019, I also wanted to say something "special" The only thing I could think of was quite simple! GOD IS AWESOME! This time last year, I found myself experiencing a life change and wondered what was next for me. I wanted to give up and throw in the towel. I figured that just working my 9-5 would be just fine. Hey! As long as I could take care of my daughter, that's all that mattered. Then, I was presented with the opportunity to cover a movie that I knew immediately would be something I would love. Although other media outlets would be covering it as well, I was still yet overjoyed. The life of such an iconic woman as Harriet Tubman is a story that is long overdue. Yes, she represents a time that America was divided, but she also represents love, forgiveness and determination. Her will to see her family, friends and other slaves free, is something to be commended. Not only was she a black woman, but her faith and God was evident. Despite many ups and downs, heartache and pain, she kept her ear open to the voice of God. That's right! A woman that could not read was able to lead many slaves to freedom! This was a reminder to all that feel that they need to have certain qualifications to make an impact. All God asks is that you have a willing heart and be obedient to His will for your life. It might not even make sense at times. You might even go against protocol and standards. However, God's ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts! At times, He will purposely make things seem "out of the ordinary", just to ensure that HE GET THE GLORY! If Harriet Tubman was around today, I would thank her for the example she set. I would thank you her for following the call on her life regardless of what it looks like. However, I can still thank her by being a woman that is determined to stay the course. Life can throw so many curve balls! We have the tools as believers of Christ to knock them right out of the park! 3

ENCOURAGING OTHERS

When encouraging a new artist, I would have to first say have a relationship with Jesus for real and a prayer life. Next I would tell them to Be yourself. Last but not least, to make sure you don't forget the people who helped you to get where you are. FAVORITE SONG

My favorite song to sing "He Looked Beyond my Faults" God chose a little girl from the country and used her to do a work for him even in my mess! I'm just so grateful. STAY FOCUSED

With all the thing going on in the world, I have to stay before God in prayer. The word is fulfilling itself...Prayer is the key to it all. MEMORABLE MOMENT

One of the greatest moments was when I shared the stage with the legend Shirley Caesar. I have been listening to her all my life. It was only to sing a little of one of songs that I sing all the time, however it meant so much! #

The Clarion Call This project was spoken into my life when I was young. In 2000, while visiting family in San Diego, California, a woman whispered in my ear and said that God would use me in a great and mighty way in years to come. I am praying that this will be a blessing not only to me but to the body of Christ. I have worked with some great producers like Brian Dunlap of DLap Productions and Eric Carrington, Recording Artist, and producer at Global Entertainment Productions. My latest song was produced by Gerald Hatcher at the 2018 Stellar Awards, It took 13 years to start this project and God is still doing great things in my life.

With all that you have been through, how has worship played a roll in your healing? Proverbs 17:22 says, "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." What better way is there to have a joyful heart than to spend time in God's presence. My healing may not be of a physical healing since I still have epilepsy, but it was an emotional and spiritual healing. My darkest moments came because I stopped worshiping. I lost that joy and in turn, lost my will to fight the depression and the suicidal thoughts Satan put into my mind. When I stopped worshiping, I stopped caring. So when the Lord got a hold of me again, when I was back in His presence worshiping Him my joy returned. I started fighting against Satan. I started caring about life again. My parents told me they could see the fire and life back in my eyes. That is all due to worship, to the time spent with God. His promises encouraged me. His words strengthened me. His death gave me life. And it was in worship, in His presence that I was made whole again.

As far as the church is concerned, do you feel there needs to be more open discussion about suicide and depression? Absolutely. I have heard people say before, "If she/he was a better Christian she/he would have no reason to be depressed." I was blown away by that statement. There is no shame in acknowledging depression. Quite the opposite, it needs to be addressed so it can be helped. If you read the Psalms you'll read that David had no problem talking about his troubles. Even Jesus, in John 12:27 says, "Now my soul has become troubled." It wasn't just to a few close friends He said that to either. He was speaking to a crowd of people. As with depression, I believe it is very important to address the topic of suicide. How else can someone learn how to get past the thoughts or shown the way out through Christ's love and guidance? Suicide and thoughts of suicide aren't something that can be helped on their own. That is like saying, "My arm doesn't hurt and doesn't need to be fixed" while the bone is broken. It isn't something that magically heals. And it is foolish to think that by ignoring it, it will go away. The church is a place where we should all be free to discuss those problems that are plaguing us with freedom and without shame. Christ would not have said, "Come to me all who are weary and I will give you rest" if He didn't know how difficult this life is. How burdensome it is.

What would you say to a woman that is having a hard time staying focused on her goals? I read something in a devotional a few years ago that really struck a chord with me. I haven't forgotten what I read and actually try to tell others about it. In the devotional the author pointed out that you could be the best of friends with someone, but if you stop talking to them that friendship dies. That is the same with our relationship with Christ. If we stop talking to Him, the relationship dies. That spoke to me so much when I read it, because I realized that applies to everything in life. If you stop focusing on your goals, if you push them aside, you will lose them. I will admit there are times when I lose my focus. When that happens I make myself remember why I had those goals in the first place and what I hoped to gain when they are accomplished. Just those two questions bring focus back and my head back in the game so to speak.

"I don't believe anything traumatic has to happen in order for someone to be a survivor. Every day is a battle. To me a survivor is someone who can get up in the morning, face the day that is ahead of them and go to bed at night. Life is hard. It is a struggle for everyone at some point in time to make it through a day intact. There is a reason why many times at the end of the day someone says, "Well, I've survived another day!"

Becoming a chef has helped me face life’s challenges by being teaching me to become super focused on the tasks before me. As a chef, you can’t be easily distracted, or you could ruin your dish. Life is the same way; you have to stay focused on the end results and not the distractions that pop-up. Also, cooking is therapeutic for me. It helps me relax and destress. It allows me to zone out for a bit and I feel everyone needs something that they can do that gives them a break.

Chef Phill As far as the church is concerned, do you feel there needs to be more open discussion about our food intake (diet, nutrition etc)

Yes, it is important that we take care of our bodies physically as well as spiritually. At my church we actually post a nutrition and fitness tip during each service to education the members on how to take care of ourselves. I feel that we often neglect our bodies based on what we eat and our lifestyle, then we pray and ask God for a miracle which isn’t bad but honestly, if we changed our diets it could get rid of some of the issues we face.

What would you say to another man that is having a hard time staying focused on his goals?

I would say, pray about your goals and just keep pushing. Keep working at your craft and you will accomplish your goal. Another thing that I would say is don’t let fear stop you. In order for others to believe in your goals you have to really believe that you can do it. One of my favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:13; “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. I use this scripture as an affirmation that I can do whatever I set my mind to. I know as men we have a lot of responsibilities but as long as you have the support of your family don’t give up because basically what you’re working towards will benefit them in the end. #

What is your favorite thing to cook and why?

I love to cook seafood. Seafood is fairly simple to cook and can be made into some of the most elegant plated meals. Also, most of my customers request seafood dishes, so I am always in the kitchen trying to figure out ways to create new recipes to switch it up. However, I would say that salmon is my specialty and I’ve developed quite a few ways to serve it up!

You have prepared meals for many familiar faces. Is their a particular person you would like to cook for?

I would really like to cook for Tyler Perry. I admire his journey from being homeless to where he is now. I feel that the same drive and hustle that he has reflects the grinding that I have been doing for years in the culinary field. It gives me hope that I can become successful enough to make a difference not only in my family but the world just as he has.

I am working on my first cookbook and I am really excited about it. I plan to have it available for the holidays. Also, check out my website, www.chefphill.com to view my sample menus and order some of my All Purpose Seasoning! Instagram @chefphill35. Thank you!

The Greatest All Time Team Victory Ever Lived!

One of the great thrills in life, is experiencing the joy of victory with teammates. No matter if it’s playing a game, or finishing a project with a fellow employee, team victory is sweet! However, there is a spiritual team victory talked about in the bible that is second to none. This team victory beats them all; it’s the highest form of victory available, it takes place on the greatest field of competition, against the greatest competitor, and offers the greatest of rewards. Victory includes, eternal rewards from God for faithful service that will last forever!

This team victory I am referring too, was won by the functioning body of Christ of the first century Christian Church and recorded in the Book of Acts. A victory that demonstrated the greatest depth of the energized power of God available to the functioning body of Christ when the Word of God mightily grows and prevails in the hearts of men.

Acts chapter 19 is the place in the Bible where is this greatest all-time team victory was lived!

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. Act 19:13-20 Today, fifty thousand pieces of silver is about $5.5 million dollars! When the Word of God mightily grows in believing hearts, the greatest victory by the functioning body of Christ will be spiritual darkness cast out of the hearts of members of a community, and replaced, will be the spiritual light of the prevailing Word of God! This team victory was initially led by the great Apostle Paul and lived by the 12 men at the school of Tyrannus, and other members of the functioning body of Christ in the city of Ephesus, in that day and time, of the first century Christian Church, over 2000 years ago.

Today is our day and time to rise to this kind prevailing Word of God and experience this kind of depth of the energized power of God, in our communities where we live! They set the bar, let’s go out and get this kind of victory for our generation! Build for yourself a strong believing heart that will never fail! Power UP!

The other day I notice my phone was losing battery power, so I put my phone on the charger and continued multitasking. After some time had passed, I glanced over only to notice that my battery power had gone down more. That is when I noticed it was plugged up but not plugged in. Well if you are like me, having several gadgets in your office, you probably know where this is going. The phone was plugged up to the charger however, the charger was not plugged into the power strip. So here I sat (frustrated); looking at my phone doing the opposite of what I expected, losing power Sylvia Koonce is the author of A Daily Dose: Spiritual Vitamins for the Soul because it was not connected to the power source. That www.sylviakoonceinspires.com quickly became a moment of pause and made me think about a plethora of things in my life. Like, what did I waste time on today? Did I evoke a positive change in my community? How many people can I help tomorrow? Did I produce assets or liabilities? It may seem like a stretch but when you think about it, there are so many people that are casualties of a powerless life. They have walked around thinking they have connected with a network that did not produce any net worth. They have been on a job; however, their purpose is still waiting to be birthed in them. So, what do you do? You make a choice to get up and connect with the source that will give you the direction and guidance to continue on the right or for some a better path. As for me, that power source is my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ... He is my compass. Yes, He is the Power that will lead, guide and direct. In today’s society we used the terms "village" and "tribe" to denote those close to us. Well, Jesus had the disciples for a village and tribe. They stayed connected to the power to overcome and endure. Being disconnected from the power source could lead to outcomes that are not always the best. The bottom line is that if Jesus is not your power source then unplug quick. If you are happy, sad, confused or wherever you find yourself today, the Bible says in Psalms 61:2 KJV, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” So, if you are the one that is full of power, be sure to stay connected! If your battery is getting low then it’s imperative that you POWER UP! Connect with the one that is holding your answer. Speak to the dreams that are waiting to unfold. Connect to the source today and POWER UP! 11

Brittney Q. Hill

HFM: Thank you for taking the time to speak to our readers. First of all, how are you? BQH: I am blessed and highly favored! I am also really excited about everything God is doing in my life. Thank you for having me.

HFM: When did you realize that you had a desire to be in media? BQH: My desire to be in media started when I was a little girl, I was probably about 7 years old when I first realized it. I've never had a shy bone in my body and I've always loved performing. I was in every talent show possible, and since then, nothing excites me more than performing, whether it's on stage, TV, or on-air, I love it all! HFM: How do you ensure that your brand, "Faith and Fame TV stay relevant? BQH: Consistency is everything. Always staying "in the know" of what's going on in my industry, but also staying on-brand. That's key. I don't desire to step into any lanes that are not meant for me. And by being consistent with my personal brand and no one else's, it keeps "Faith and Fame TV" relevant. HFM: What would you say to a woman that is having a hard time staying focused on her goals? BQH: Always remember your "why." WHY do you have this goal? WHY is it significant? WHY do you believe YOU were called to do it? WHY now? When you are lead by purpose and not your own ambitions or desires, it's easier to stay on track. Purpose should precede everything. HFM: Have you ever had an interview which left you in awe after speaking to that person? BQH: Yes! I was interviewed by a Business Strategist, who was asking me similar questions to what I said in your previous question. She kept asking me about my "why's" and it made me realize that I was moving in vanity. Everything I was pursuing was all about me. And that's where I was going wrong. It made me change the entire trajectory of my career, and that is where "Faith and Fame TV" and my purpose was birthed. HFM: How has social media impacted your career? BQH: Social media has played a significant role in my career. Because of social media, I've been able to really promote my brand and show to mass audiences. It's also because of social media that opportunities such as this arise, where I'm honored to be interviewed and recognized for my talent and contributions.

Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, HARRIET tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.

This movie was Incredible! Cynthia Eirvo did a wonderful job. She was believable and her every move built anticipation for the next move.

The costumes were amazing! The clothing consist of mostly tailored garments with a pop of color. At the climax of the movie, Harriet wore this blood red velvet blazer and vest that clearly made a statement of sacrifice ending with victory. Kudos to Designer Paul Tazewell. ~KEENYA KERSEY, His Favor Magazine, Fashion Editor

"On Monday, Oct. 14th, 2019 His Favor Teen Magazine had the pleasure of attending a press screening for Harriet the film. In a time where so much of the conversation is dominated by women trail blazers seeking to crack the ceiling of oppression and limited opportunity, this film intimately explores the journey of one woman who decimated the ceiling placed on her by slavery and gender oppression. She both led and commanded hundreds of current and former slaves in battle and on a quest for freedom with the voice of God commanding her every move. I firmly recommend this film to anyone seeking liberty and empowerment during perilous times. " ~J.E. Tyler, His Favor Teen Magazine, Contributing Editor

Indomitable Harriet

Nationwide there are educational institutions, public parks, works of arts, museums, monuments, streets, highways, and other forms of memorials that are named after, or in her honor. There is rarely any discussion, cultural celebration, or historical debate that doesn’t feature her laborious, amazing, epic, and warrior life. Considering the time period in which she lived, if it were not for documented, as well as photographic records, credible accounts, and testimonies, as well as biographies, it would be unfathomable to many that this American History giant is a black woman who was born into slavery.

To understand American History is to understand why Harriet Tubman’s spirit, legend, legacy, and power can never be denied, ignored, or diminished. She is more than Black History or American History. She is a force and spirit today that is as powerful and relevant as she was during her lifetime. Her journey is so compelling that some misguided souls have felt the need to create folklore for the sake of embellishment. Harriet is the real thing, and her journey does not require aggrandizement. More than a century after her death, we continue to draw strength from the name, legacy, and spirit of “Harriet Tubman”. This fearless warrior refused to accept that she was born to be held captive by anyone who considered her tangible property. I’m certain she experienced the fears, hurts, brutality, disrespect, and questions that people of color, as well as any maligned group, to this day, are subject to. Yet these burdens, disappointments, and mental and physical abuses were the drivers that compelled her to defy the law of land at the time and accomplish what seemed insurmountable feats. The System of Slavery was unacceptable, and her indomitable spirit would not allow Harriet to fall in line with, or submit to unjust laws, evil-spirited people, and the socially accepted practice of murdering of people of African descent. “Slavery is the next thing to hell.” Harriet Tubman to Benjamin Drew, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, 1855. It is awe-inspiring what people can do when they’re in crisis mode. While most of us acknowledge that we will experience crisis in our lives, very few, if any of us, expect to live our lives in a perpetual state of crisis management. We would consider it too much for one person to bear. The human behavioral/medical experts would warn us of the suffering, as well as debilitating effects when we remain in a state of crisis for long periods of time. Yet, this perpetual state of crisis management was Harriet Tubman’s life for years. Just think about the overwhelming thoughts, hours of reflection, awareness of the brutality that was certain to be inflicted in response to any quest for freedom. Imagine living in a culture where the law sanctioned heinous crimes against humanity; where there were no laws or law enforcement to protect one’s human rights; where nothing that applied to humans applied to you because you have been deemed less than human. However, in the face of constant danger, Harriet remained undaunted. She was relentless and wouldn’t retreat until she was a free woman. “When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven”. Harriet Tubman, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman By Sarah Hopkins Bradford. She understood that roadblocks are not put up solely to stop you in the moment. They are put up to prevent you from achieving greatness; enlightening others who may be going through the same thing or something similar; from advancing in any part of your life that up-levels quality of lifestyle; or succeed in gaining access to opportunity. The true warrior is not self-absorbed. He or she accepts the charge to not only win on his or her own behalf but to fight so that others will win. Spiritual things are beautiful; they are powerful; and oftentimes inexplicable. The spirit of Harriet Tubman knew long before Martin Luther King, Jr. was born that one of us isn’t free until all of us are free. In this regard, the victory of leading others to freedom far outweighed the risks of the flesh cutting lash or death. Harriet taught us that when you are executing the Creator’s purpose for your life, nothing or no one can stop you. “I have heard their groans and sighs, and seen their tears, and I would give every drop of blood in my veins to free them” Harriet Tubman, Harriet, the Moses of her People by Sarah Hopkins Bradford. The world has not become exhausted with Harriet Tubman. Although we are living through some very trying and turbulent times, her life story continues to amaze us; is still an enthralling account of the human spirit, and what is achievable when we refuse to allow adversarial forces prevent us from fulfilling our purpose; and reminds us that no weapon formed against us shall prosper when we decide to operate in the power bestowed upon us by the Creator. The indomitable spirit of Harriet Tubman is why a movie trailer produced and released in 2019 (more than 100 years after her death), can capture more than ten million views within five days. She is still calling, motivating, inspiring, and challenging all of us to fight the good fight. We are still anxious to hear what she has to say. We still want to see what it may have been like when she was in action. We still want to taste victory like the indomitable Harriet Tubman. “I said to the Lord, I’m going to hold steady on to you, and I know you will see me through” Harriet Tubman, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman By Sarah Hopkins Bradford.

Chuckie Perez

"The Chuckie Perez Show," currently available in 120 million homes on JUCE TV, TBN Africa, Uplift TV, Brio TV and Parable TV, is expanding to an additional 16 million homes through Spectrum Cable. In addition to serving as a presenter and executive producer of the variety show, Pérez, the Christian singer / songwriter, recording artist, television presenter and music and television producer, also known as Chuckie P., is preparing to launch his first single project musical in 14 years.

Pérez, who has shared the stage with Newsboys and DC Talk, began his musical career in the 1990s and recorded for a variety of labels, including Maranatha / Benson, Diadem / Provident and Essential / Provident. He has performed for crowds of more than 250,000 people, played at numerous international music festivals and has traveled through hundreds of cities and 44 states, as well as in the nations of Israel, Italy and the United Kingdom. The musician is credited with creating music that defies genres while breaking down barriers between people and impacting cultures through gospel messages.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with our readers. First of all, how are you? Blessed and much favored :)

Tell us, when did you realize that you wanted to be in the media? Well, I've always been fascinated by acting and I'm a fan of television and movies. Even throughout my music career every time we shoot my music videos, I guess that looked a lot like acting. Later I would write and direct dramas in my church, which by the way is a lot of work. But my love for television production began when I took a step of faith and directed and produced the television program of my father (pastor) for TBN. I had no experience with a camera or production, just a crazy idea to put our church on television. It gave me a very necessary practical experience. I learned camera angles and the basics. The motto of his magazine Favor is "Where diversity is celebrated". How does this motto apply to your talk show? Well, if you have seen any of my shows, we are quite diverse. Latinos, African Americans, Asians, etc. I think there is something special in all of God's Creation. On a lighter note, we see our program as an equal opportunity criminal. We make fun of all stereotypes and try to have fun on purpose in a sometimes racially tense world. We all need to laugh at ourselves. Tell us about your next project? What do you want the listeners to take away? My new music is finally coming out. It's been 13 years since my last solo project as an artist, but I'm back. The project tells the journey and the testimony of what

God can do if you allow it. It is a collection of songs celebrated by Faith, Hope and Love. Each song has a story, the first cut (It On On) is the main theme of my television program. That particular song talks about how the enemy (devil) tries to stop the purpose God gave him, but he can't. Then, after facing all your attempts to steal, kill and destroy, you become stronger and smarter and able to say ... bring it, it's on. As for The Chuckie Perez Show, I'm excited! Everyone can expect the same comedy parodies of celebrity interviews and just a great clean fun for the whole family! It will be a great season! The favor is God Super in your natural, it is His Extra in your ordinary. Your only requirement is humility. "So humble yourself under the mighty power of God, and at the right time you will raise them in honor." 1 Peter 5: 6 NTV
