HVV: How did you begin your entrepreneurial journey, and what inspired you to start your own business? NP: My journey began around the age of 14 when I

started creating digital businesses at the inception of the internet. I was primarily inspired by the vast opportunities presented by the evolving web. The open and greenfield nature of the digital environment at that time was a significant motivating factor for me, offering numerous opportunities to build digital businesses in a rapidly expanding and relatively untapped market. company but operating more like a venture studio, continuously creating and entering new ventures. Each project had its own set of challenges, but a notable one was finding the right talent to work in the digital startup environment. This was crucial because of the need for a team capable of driving innovation and creating things that hadn't been created before. Working in Orange County, California, where I was a pioneer in digital marketing, digital media, and digital advertising in a predominantly financial and real estate environment, made finding talented individuals who understood the nuances of this new digital space a significant challenge. Another one was understanding and unlocking the potential of email and email marketing. This required not only finding the right people but also educating them about this new channel and aligning them with the opportunities the email presented. Overcoming these challenges involved identifying and nurturing special talent who could adapt to the uncertainties of young companies and embrace innovation in a landscape that was constantly evolving. HVV: Can you share some key milestones or achievements in the growth of your business? NP: My career has several distinct chapters: firstly,

ERE’S a question for your next dinner party. What American artistic institution does the following describe?

It has an in-house artist residency, which has hosted more than a thousand writers and artists since its inception in 2012. It has incubated or partnered with almost every cherished cultural organization and event in its city, including a poetry festival, a classical music festival, and a trailblazing new drama group. It doubles as a gallery, featuring more than 700 artworks and photographs with a special emphasis on emerging African artists. It consists of two wings connected by an orb-shaped sky bridge, a monumental piece of public art that projects video and photo onto the most famous street in its city. It’s home to a Poetry Rail featuring a dozen legendary local wordsmiths, their words carved into steel using water jets. ("You think the world was shocked when Nixon resigned?/Wait 'til I whup/George Foreman's behind.” – Muhammad Ali.) It hosts nine weekly performances of the best jazz in the city. “When I perform there,” a local jazz luminary says, “I feel like Bobby Short at the Carlyle.” Is it a prominent cultural foundation? A groundbreaking performance space? A museum with a formidable endowment and a visionary programming team? None of the above. It’s a hotel – one of the most luxurious boutique hotels in Miami Beach. As Carole Ann Taylor, a Miami jazz vocalist whose talent was celebrated by Duke Ellington, said, “The Betsy Hotel is not a luxury hotel. Felt like we were trapped in time in a Hemingway novel but with all of today[’]s modern appointments. Must stay.” Between a rooftop and courtyard pool, a Laurent Tourondel restaurant, several ocean decks facing one of the world’s most storied beachfronts, and the kind of service where one is invariably on a first-name basis with the staff by the end of one’s stay, for me, it’s a master class in luxury with soul.

THE BETSY was bankrupt when New York finance executives Jonathan Plutzik and Lesley Goldwasser purchased it in 2005. To call Plutzik and Goldwasser finance executives is like calling Bill Gates a computer guy. Plutzik is the son of Hyam Plutzik, a revered American lyric poet who was a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and whose writing desk now anchors the Writer’s Room. Goldwasser was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and received her undergraduate education at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. From the beginning, they wanted the hotel to be something different. “When we got here nearly 20 years ago,” Plutzik said, “Miami Beach was well on its way to becoming one of the world’s great tourist destinations. But we couldn’t help feeling that an important element was missing: a luxury hotel that redefined the boutique idea by doing things on a human scale, especially through unpretentious, personal service. And then, critically, offered robust arts programming, because of the way that enriches the lodging experience. In today’s world, there’s no commerce without community. So that’s what we set out to create.” HILLS VIEWS & VALLEYS | 73

After an extensive renovation, the Betsy opened in 2009 as a refined alternative to the sometimes hedonic din of Ocean Drive and South Beach in general. Since then, it has become a gathering place for some of the world's most interesting and accomplished people – the lobby is a sweet din of a UN-level number of languages. The Betsy epitomizes a critical element of the best kind of travel, namely that I never know whom I’m going to meet there: a Fortune 500 executive doing a company off-site, a family with young (or notso-young) children, a couple celebrating a destination wedding, friends on a group getaway, or one of the many artists coursing through the place like DNA through a bloodstream. I discovered the Betsy as one of those artists, through a stay in the Writer’s Room in 2017. Since then, the Betsy has become the closest thing I have to a muse – I have now worked on half my books there. I show up, and the ideas start flowing. Last summer, I was there with my family when a casual conversation with my wife turned into an idea for a personal essay about the challenges of male friendship over 40. I snuck off to the hotel’s third-floor library and in several mornings wrote an essay that ran in The New York Times shortly after that. The Betsy has played such a transformative role that I even moved my family down to Miami 74 | HILLS VIEWS & VALLEYS

Beach for a year to be closer to its stardust. Its lobby, in addition to serving as the area’s intellectual headquarters, became my office. For Jonathan Plutzik and Lesley Goldwasser – and Deborah Briggs, Jonathan’s sister, and the head of arts programming at the hotel – the Betsy is only the starting point of a community-wide involvement. amazingly talented kids who don’t have the opportunity to perform a great deal because they’re in schools with 75 sopranos, one opera every five months, and the grad students take those roles,” he said. “Here, we mount an opera every three weeks.” Rossi got by on a shoestring budget and improvised solutions for lodging and rehearsal spaces until he crossed paths with the Plutziks-Goldwassers. “The Betsy became our control room,” Rossi said. “They invited us to stage performances there – in the lobby, on the steps. Jonathan, Lesley, and Deborah started calling the mayor for financial support, Temple Emanu-El to get us a rehearsal space, and the Tradewinds Hotel to get us a regular lodging partner. I walked up and down Ocean Drive asking hotels if they could help us. The answer was either no, or ‘Sure, for $200,000.’” Ten years after its founding, the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival is a local institution. Rossi’s festival wasn’t on the list because it didn’t operate out of a building. “Jonathan started making calls,” Rossi said. “He made the case to the commissioners that the city is our building – the streets, the parks, the exteriors.” Then Plutzik lent Rossi his building to make the point: A projection performance for Valentine’s Day. Plutzik

made sure the commissioners attended. Afterward, they voted unanimously to include Rossi’s festival in the list of grantees. “Jonathan has been the Sherpa of the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival,” Mayor Gelber said. In his three terms, Gelber has overseen the entrenchment of Miami Beach as a world-class destination for arts and culture. “I’m from Miami Beach,” he said. “I used to be an usher at the Miami Beach Convention Center in high school. At that point, there was nothing but professional wrestling and boxing. Then the Miami City Ballet came, the New World Symphony, and Art Basel. But it exploded within the last decade. People are moving here from New York Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston to be a part of it.” For Gelber, the Betsy’s ownership family has been instrumental to this evolution. “They brought the notion that arts and culture can create a sense of place,” he said. “Jonathan has made our city a stage. If there is ever a Mount Rushmore for cultural luminaries in Miami Beach, he’s going to be on it.”

She was disheartened to see many magnificent, abandoned buildings in the historic part of the city, destined to disappear along with the history and legacy they held. Ane dreamed of rescuing a property, even a small one, that could preserve part of that history within its walls. Her dream became a reality when she acquired a Casona in the barrio of Santa Ana, a property that had been abandoned for fifty years. With the help of her son, Stefano Marcelletti, the restoration process began, revealing the beauty and charm that now permeates Casa Lecanda. Each of the seven rooms in the hotel is named after Ane’s siblings, each with its unique design and feel, just like a large family. These names hold great significance for Ane, as they represent her roots and the values instilled in her by her loving parents. The names of the rooms contribute to the overall theme and message of Casa Lecanda, promoting love, loyalty, and a sense of family. The hotel itself operates like a family, with appreciation, support, and respect for one another, creating a relaxing and familiar experience for guests. Inspired by the 2010 Feadship Future Concept Breathe, this innovative vessel showcases a dynamic hull shape and a single efficient medium-speed Wärtsilä main engine, replacing the need for two higher-rev diesel motors. With a central propeller shaft installation and three gensets, the Savannah offers a new level of efficiency and performance. One of the key features of the Savannah is its large contra-rotating and azimuthing sternthruster, located just aft of the main propeller. This unique design allows for a propeller that is forty percent larger than usual, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced vibrations. Additionally, the large sternthruster enhances maneuverability in marinas, making docking a breeze. Savannah's propulsion system offers five modes: maneuvering, diesel-electrical, range, high speed, and boost. This versatility ensures optimal fuel saving and reliability, surpassing any other superyacht on the market. Ted McCumber, the owner's project manager, praises Feadship for their innovative approach, stating, "It is not the individual technologies used on

Savannah that are new in the yachting world – it is the way they have been combined." Beyond its propulsion system, the Savannah boasts a stunning exterior profile designed in collaboration between CG Design and Feadship's designers. The "floating superstructure" creates a visually striking effect, with glass and composite panels appearing to float thanks to intricate design elements. The stainless steel doors seamlessly blend into the overall design, adding to the yacht's sophisticated aesthetic. Another standout feature of the Savannah is its spacious and versatile deck areas. The aft owner- and main deck areas have been designed as a single giant open inside/ outside spaces, enclosed by weathertight sliding doors. This unique design allows for a seamless transition from the swimming pool to the salon, creating an immersive al fresco experience. McCumber explains, "The owner of Savannah loves to be at one with the water. This phenomenal design allows him to run from the main salon and dive straight into the sea." CG Design has created a truly unique and luxurious space, with lighting fixtures that offer up to ten different colors, lens types, and positions.
