Hi, I am Clarington the bear. I remember when I felt sad after my best friend, Lily, died. If you know someone who died, you may feel sad, too. It took some time, but I am here to tell you that one day you will feel better, like I do.

Lily and I had so much fun.

On summer days, we floated on the creek.

We ran through the fields. 11

And rolled in the grass 13

We were the best of friends. 15

One day Lily got really sick. The kind of sick a doctor cannot fix. We couldn’t float on the creek, run through the fields or roll in the grass anymore. After a while, I knew Lily wasn’t coming back because she had died. I didn’t know what to do without my best friend, Lily. I never felt so sad before and I was mad because my playmate was gone. 16

Would I always feel that way?

I wondered if I imagined my fun times with Lily if she would come back. I went to our favorite places, but she wasn’t there.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Lily. There was still so much I didn’t understand. “Is it my fault that she died? Was I a good friend? Why did this happen?”

I began to cry.

Hearing footsteps, I looked up and saw CJ the bear walking through the woods. CJ was a friend of Lily’s, too.

I told CJ how I missed floating on the creek, running through the fields and rolling in the grass with Lily. CJ said, “Yes, I miss Lily, too. She packed the best picnics.”

We decided to have a picnic in memory of Lily. 24

We invited two of our other friends, Rossi and Denzi. They knew Lily, too. The four of us shared our favorite memories of our good friend. We felt closer than ever before. 25

Over time, we did all the things I used to do with Lily. It was different without her but I still had fun. 26

I will never forget my best friend, Lily.

The death of a friend or loved one is not easy and it is okay to feel sad. However, always have hope and you will feel better one day soon.

The Butterflies from Everyone Has Hope Craft Project Instructions

Materials: Special Fabric 1* Special Fabric 2* or Special Fabric 3*, 6 inch dowel rod piece, wire/string cut to required length as needed, tacky glue, water base glue sealer, bowl, and scissors. 1. Gather your favorite fabric and supplies. 2. Prepare pattern by tracing from Everyone Has Hope. 3. Cut out body and wings and dots on both sides. Fasten in an exact pattern on both sides. Glue wing halves together. 4. Glue dots and body and wings together, punch holes in the tip of each wing. Trim cut fabric so the edges are even. 5. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap. 6. Coat with glue sealer over wings on both sides. 7. Lay butterfly on top of upside-down covered bowl. 8. Let air dry as sealer stays on bowl. Usually 20 minutes between coats. 9. Make holder for hanging if desired. (See diagram A - the black line is a dowel rod and gray line is a piece of wire or string.) *Notes: Special Fabric could be used from the clothes of someone special or a favorite color. Please use adult supervision when using scissors.

Teddy Bear Hand Puppet Puppet Craft Project

This puppet project is a great way to help families begin to talk about the loved ones they miss. Often times, families use clothes from the family member or friend they have lost for this project. For the puppet body consider using heavy fabric like courdoury pants or blankets. Also try using sweaters or flannel for the eyes and nose. How to make your own teddy bear puppet Materials: 1. Three different colored Special Fabrics*

2. Needle 3. Thread 4.Tack Glue 5. Scissors Steps: 1. Trace pattern by placing on back of Special Fabric 1.*

2. Cut two body pieces and sew pieces together. Leave opening at bottom big enough to fit your child’s hand in. 3. Cut a triangle for a nose from Special Fabric 2* and glue on body. 4. Cut two small dots for eyes from Special Fabric 3* and glue on body.

* Special Fabric could be used from the clothes of someone special or a favorite color.

The Butterflies from Everyone Has Hope Coloring and Tracing Project Instructions

Materials: White paper and coloring tool (crayons, markers, or paint pens) 1. Prepare drawing pattern by tracing shapes from Everyone Has Hope. 2. Color butterfly on traced paper or transfer butterfly to an heavier art paper. (Tips - after colors have been drawn in, trace your shapes with a black fine point marker. Put a buffer sheet under your coloring page to prevent marker bleeding) 3. Your finished butterfly can be cut and glued to a heavy card stock.

This butterfly drawing was made into a greeting card and a matted art print.

Inspired by a family’s true story, Everyone Has Hope helps readers to be mindful when you are down and unhappy because of a loss or disappointment that hope will save you. Author Jason Lynch writes from the heart about Clarington Bear and how he finds hope with his family and friends after the sudden loss his best friend, Lily. The story comes from his own experience of losing his mother, Judy. Lynch has dedicated himself to enriching the lives of others through his cottage based toy company. Jason is an author and owner of an award winning business, E. G. Bear Co. He travels as part of the Headline Kids School Show Program visiting schools and other venues across the United States with his reading and motivational workshops. An honors graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, Lynch spends his time writing and works with non-profit groups to help them with fund raising. In 2008 his company, along with several groups of children from Appalachia and many volunteers built and stuffed a one of the World’s Largest Teddy Bears.
