Flip Flop Day to raise awareness of childhood cancer NATIONAL: CHOC Regional Manager of the Free State and Kalahari, Ruth Meth, urges people to 'Have a Heart and Wear a Sole on 12 February 2021. Now in its second year, the Flip Flop Day of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) is an annual event which will be celebrated on 12 February 2021 this year. Locals are encouraged to ‘Have a Heart and Wear a Sole’ in support of fighting childhood cancer and giving patients and their families the support that they need. Last year, the first ever Flip Flop Day raised well over R1, 5 million for CHOC, which has several homes across the country. According to Regional Manager of the Free

State and Kalahari, Ruth Meth, the aim of the campaign is to raise both funding as well as awareness of childhood cancer, which is often hushed away by society. “Childhood cancer is not something that people easily talk about. If we can open up conversation about it, early detection will become more common and children will have better odds to be healed and go on to live a full life. Cancer steals away a child’s future but we want to help to get it back,” she said. The campaign is supported by PNA Stationers and Tekkie Town, where along with CHOC’s offices people will be able to pop into and grab their Flip Flop Day sticker. “I’m a…(continue on page 3)

Northern Cape Floods

NORTHERN CAPE: Amidst the recent heavy rains that was experienced in certain areas of the province, members of the Kimberley Search and Rescue unit placed their own lives at risk on Tuesday 09 February 2021, in an attempt to rescue victims that were trapped in flooded areas and to recover the bodies of victims who drowned in the strong flowing rivers.

Flip Flop Day to raise awareness of childhood cancer (from page 2)…strong believer in partnerships because the more people talk about this, the more we can achieve. You can really see the effect when different parts of society come together whether they are businesses, schools or churches to create solutions for one problem,” explained Meth. Flip Flop Day also aims to bring fun and colour to the daunting issue of childhood cancer. “This is our own inhouse campaign that will go

towards feeding our children, paying towards electricity and other expenses in our homes. Flip flops are great because they’re about being fun and laid-back, so we hope lots of people will be taking part,” she added. People can also get a Flip Flop Day sticker for R10 at the local CHOC office at 19 Stegmann Street in Universitas. (CHOC – Media Support)

Weet jy wat maak my verskriklik hartseer? Dis wanneer mense die goedheid en groothartigheid van mense wat dien, tot hulle eie voordeel gebruik, selfs finansieel. Ek het hierdie sêding gehoor: If you're a giver, know your limits (to what you can give), because the takers don't have any. Is dit nie waar nie? ~ Willem Botha

Kitchen delight

Strawberry Ice cream Ingredients 450g strawberries, washed with tops cut off and quartered 250ml milk 250ml white sugar 5ml of vanilla extract or 1 vanilla pod 500ml cream

Method Place your strawberries in a food processor and whizz it up until they are a puree. To get perfectly smooth puree, be sure to scrape down any chunks and give them another whizz. Bring to the boil the milk, if you are using a vanilla pod, place it in the milk before you boil to infuse it with that fragrant scent. Take the milk off the heat, add your sugar and give a gentle stir until the sugar has dissolved . Add your cream to the infused milk. Turn your processor back on and slowly pour your cream into the mixture. Leaving the processor on at this point aerates the ice cream mixture. Place a small glass bowl inside a larger

glass bowl filled with ice water to create an ice bath. Pour your ice cream into the smaller glass bowl and leave it for 30min. until it cools below room temperature. You know its ready when all the ice blocks are melted. Once your mixture has cooled, pour it into a metal container (I like cake tins). You can also add fresh fruit, caramel, chocolate sauce, nuts and any other sweet treats at this point. It’s important to use a metal container as this will help your ice cream set quickly. Cover your metal dish in tinfoil and pop it in the freezer overnight. Serve with mint, fresh strawberries or any other condiments your heart desires.

Focus on Personal Finance

Three key money tips to save your sanity in 2021 South Africans remain super-stressed by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The festive season has been a subdued time for most of us. An end-of-year 13th cheque or bonus remains a dream – we count ourselves lucky if we still have a job. We’ve also not enjoyed the psychological support we’re used to from meet-ups with friends and traditional family gettogethers. “Anxiety and procrastination are normal at a strange time like this,” says Shafeeka Anthony, marketing manager of JustMoney personal finance website. “It seems almost impossible to break free from unhealthy habits and routines. Many people feel frustrated and angry at the situation they find themselves in, ten months into lockdown, with no solution in sight.” Nonetheless, making adjustments in the following three areas can help you to feel more in control of your finances, Anthony says. Work out a budget: Understanding what you spend your money on is the first step in financial planning. The trick is to figure out a way to track your finances that works for you. Check the amount of money you have coming in, list all your regular monthly bills, then all your variable expenses those that may change from month to month like groceries and entertainment. Credit card and bank statements are a helpful place to start since they list your monthly payments. Soon you will start to see where your money goes, where you have money left over, and where you can cut back. To help you, access JustMoney's handy budget calculator visit their website. If a spreadsheet sounds too intimidating, you can read up about three alternatives to traditional budgeting. Adjust your spending: Want-to-have expenses are the first place to look for when you want to make spending cuts. Make a list of what you

Pet’s Corner

really need, and only take advantage of sales and special offers if they relate to the items on your list. If the numbers still aren’t adding up, you can look at adjusting your fixed expenses, although doing so will be more difficult as these are items like rent and medical aid. Read a handy JustMoney article on why it’s easy to get carried away with your spending, and how you can figure out how to rather invest in yourself. Reduce your debt: First of all, understand the difference between good and bad debt. Debt is acceptable if, for example, it takes the form of a home loan and allows you to buy a flat or house for your family. Debt however is bad if it does not increase your wealth in the long term. For example, you can easily get carried away with buying the latest fashions on a clothing account, running up items on a credit card, or taking up a cash advance loan. Debt is also bad when you miss your payments and the account goes into arrears. Read up on New Year resolutions to help keep you away from bad debt. “Addressing these key areas – budget, spending, and debt – can save your sanity,” says Anthony. “The best advice is to try not to panic. Rather calmly assess your income and what you owe. Aim to get an overall picture of your debts and commitments, and where you can cut back and live more within your means. The JustMoney website offers many helpful articles and tools relating to financial wellness. . “If you are already deep in debt, and dreading the thought of upcoming payments, then it may be time to speak to an expert. You are not alone – get help. Consolidating your debt can reduce your monthly payments and help you pay it off.”

Taking care of your pets…

Vettie 9 jaar oud van Brandfort. Vettie se eienaar is Elizma Bezuidenhout

Veterinarian Visits Responsible pet ownership starts with regular visits to the veterinarian. Given their shorter-than-human lifespan, your dog or cat should be getting a check-up at least once or twice a year. Depending on your pet's vaccination schedule, they may go more frequently when they're young, but establishing and maintaining good pet health means keeping up with vet visits as they age. Trips to the vet can be, shall we say, challenging. Cats, in particular, may be averse to leaving the comfy confines of their home, but there are ways to reduce stress for both of you. Acclimating your cat to her carrier when she is a kitten is good practice (and avoids the running-away-and-hiding-under-the-bed scenario). Dogs tend to like going for car rides. Take your pup on joyrides, so he won't associate getting into the car with going to the vet. And many pets don't mind a trip to the veterinarian's office, especially if you choose a vet that's a good fit for your little friend

VW SA adds some local flavour to their Vivo line-up.

I had a friend back in high school who owned a 2007 Audi A4 Cabriolet. In our matric year, he was voted as Head-Boy and exercised his many privileges by leaving class slightly early at the end of the day so he could park it in front of the school. He’d then roll the top down and blast some jams. I know what you’re thinking, but I promise it gets worse. He even got a personalised number plate that read SWAG GP. This was back in 2012, and suffice to say after much ridicule from all of us, he decided to remove it. I sense this was done in slight shame as he have very few photos of the car with the number plate on. After much trolling through his social media, I was at least able to find one photo with the plate on. Fast forward to 2021 and the ‘swag’ name reappears but this time in isiZulu and on the side of Volkswagen’s locally-produced Polo Vivo. So surely you’d think the new Polo Vivo Mswenko should be subject to an equal banter-filled tongue lashing? Well, not really. The connotations of the word Mswenko might limit the scope of appeal to a younger, more exuberant crowd who probably used #Mswenko in their tweets way before others even realised that Twitter even existed. But it is a limited edition model and should certainly appeal to that market quite well. Volkswagen South Africa have taken advantage of their local production to create a distinctively South African model that can be tailored to appeal to current trends and even has the ability to create them. It’s a fantastic concept that can speak to our specific market in a way that the

anodyne corporate approach just can’t. Volkswagen are known as the peoples car after all and it’s models like this that reinforce that. Admittedly, I am on the fence about the name Mswenko – it will appeal to younger market, like I said, but I can’t imagine your husband/wife or children will be entirely happy if you drove around in a car that paraded your allure and swagger to all. But in saying that, I am woefully out of touch with the latest celebs and trends, so my opinion on this can be taken with a pinch of salt. It’s an acknowledgement and celebration of our local diversity, so hopefully we will see more models like this not just from Volkswagen, but from other manufacturers who build their vehicles locally. The Mswenko is based on the Polo Vivo Comfortline variant and in addition to what that models offers as standard, you get decals on the side of the door with Mswenko lettering, 16-inch alloy wheels, a black roof, privacy glass and mirror covers that can be had in two different shades. There are four exterior colours to choose from: Pure White, Reflex Silver, Limestone Grey, and Reef Blue. The bright Ocean Blue seats contrast well against a rather monochrome interior with its various shades of grey. Silver dashboard inlays also spice things up, while other stand out features include a leather steering wheel and gear level, App Connect and 6 speakers. Pricing for the Polo Vivo 1.4 Mswenko comes in at R246 900 which includes a 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 6 year anti-corrosion warranty. Review: The Motorist

Nampo 2021 : Postponed to August Nampo Harvest Day 2021 has officially been postponed to August. The event was initially supposed to be held from 11 to 14 May, but was now scheduled to take place on 17 to 20 August at Nampo Park in Bothaville. This was according to a statement released by Grain SA. The statement also said that while Nampo would go ahead in a physical format in August, the show would be smaller than before, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the statement, GrainSA said that it was hopeful that government policies and guidelines would permit the postponed date. “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage across South Africa unabated, Grain SA continued to consult extensively with all stakeholders on the best way forward. The potential risk of further waves in the coming months cannot be discounted and Grain SA had to once again make the difficult, but responsible, decision to postpone [Nampo 2021].” Grain SA said that it would reassess the new date on 1 June if necessary. “We will continually evaluate the possibility of hosting the 2021 NAMPO Harvest Day in its original format, albeit with best practices in mind to ensure the safety of exhibitors and visitors alike,” the statement said. Toit Wessels, assistant manager for Nampo and marketing at Grain SA, said that the event would most likely be run at 70% of capacity. In the past, Nampo had attracted about 15 000 to 20 000 visitors a day

. “However, for the time being we are waiting until June 1 as [this] will determine whether the day will continue or not.” In 2020, Nampo was also initially postponed to August from May; however, the physical show was eventually cancelled and replaced by Nampo Virtual, which took place in September. Wessels added, however, that Nampo Virtual would not run again. Jannie de Villiers, CEO of Grain SA, said that the decision to postpone the event was a necessary one. “The health and safety of visitors, exhibitors, staff, sponsors and the entire agricultural community during [Nampo] are paramount and guided by these priorities and best practice.” Dirk Strydom, manager of grain economy and marketing at Grain SA, said that Grain SA would remain committed to applying risk-informed decision making and keeping all stakeholders informed every step of the way. “While we’re taking precautions and doing some things a little differently, our aim is to present a diversified agricultural trade exhibition [that benefits] our loyal and long-standing partners, the local communities and the broader agriculture sector as a whole.” Nampo Cape, scheduled for 8 to 10 September in Bredasdorp, Western Cape, and the Nampo Alfa show, scheduled for 30 September to 2 October at Nampo Park, Bothaville, were, as yet, set to continue on these confirmed dates.
