or do you want to own the tables, chairs, room and building? Entrepreneurship can create a world of opportunity. It is undoubtedly hard work but it can ultimately be very rewarding. Knowledge is power, and our featured student personifies this. David Drake owns his own business, reOneSpot.com. His website serves as a resource for real estate agents. David knew the site was useful, but he wanted to enhance it. With the rapid pace of technology, this business owner knew his site needed to be more than useful – it needed to be on the cutting edge. “Everything we are doing now is online and in the cloud,” he said. “If you’re not familiar with how this stuff works, you’re at the will of other people.” Our Web Design & Development program was David’s solution. He was able to combine his experience in graphic design with his affinity for technology. Another appeal was the instructors who actively work in the web design and development field. “For less than the cost of paying someone to build a website, I could pay for myself to attend class and learn it quicker,” David said. “The return on investment was huge.” Since completing the program, David has been able to enhance marketing for his business through a new-andimproved site. He’s also incorporated email marketing campaigns and tracks his success through Google Analytics. Read more about David’s path to success on Page 46. Are you ready to call the shots? Let us help you get started. Meeting & Event Management, Culinary Apprenticeship, Personal Financial Planner – these are among our many certificate programs that could be a catalyst for your path to entrepreneurship. Are you ready to take that first step?

ALUMS BENEFIT FROM CAREER-ENHANCING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

E

Each year, many of our KSU alumni begin their journey back into education.

Whether it’s to land a promotion with their current employer, change jobs or launch a new career, we provide the options and resources to achieve it. Our alums have demonstrated that learning doesn’t, and shouldn’t, stop in adulthood. Several alums have discovered the true value of a professional certificate. Derek Brott was interested in launching his own social media consulting and web design business. He strengthened his position by enrolling in our Social Media Marketing Certificate program. He has since started his own company which he refers to as his “side hustle.” Derek’s full-time job is in the events industry. He returned to CCPE to earn his Meeting & Event Management Certificate and, as a result, received a job promotion. Karen Perkins was planning to pursue nursing school when her aunt, who is a nurse, said that taking a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course was the best thing she did for her career. That motivation inspired Karen to enroll in our CNA program. “This was more to get my foot in the medical field, to just like get a taste of what it’s really like and not what I think it’s like,” Karen said. “I’ve fallen in love with it and I definitely want to become a nurse. I will probably work as a tech in a hospital or a CNA at a nursing home until I become an RN.” As an undergraduate at KSU, Michael Malone simultaneously enrolled in our Paralegal Certificate program. He plans to enter law school and wanted to better prepare himself for it. “I just want to add another notch to my résumé,” he said. “I figured this would help me out, give me that knowledge before I take the next step. I was always interested in the law. As an undergrad, this program was a perfect fit.” Continuing to choose KSU led these Owls to new careers. Ask us about our 10% discount – you could join Derek, Karen and Michael and empower yourself through continuing education.

LEGAL

A Defining Moment

I DID I T!

T

Paralegal Graduate Refreshes Skills, Lands Job After 20-year Hiatus. There are moments that can define a person’s career.

For Patricia Emery, this moment happened in an elevator ride. The University of Florida graduate credits the encounter she had with an unknown woman on the elevator as the moment she was first introduced to the paralegal field. “I studied political science and I did not know what I was going to do after graduation,” Emery said. “It was fate because I was on my way to meet my advisor to talk about my future.” In September of 1986, a few months after her college graduation, Emery received her Paralegal Certificate and began her career in Miami. She worked for eight years in Miami as a paralegal in civil litigation cases before moving to Atlanta where she continued her work as a paralegal in civil litigation and insurance defense. After three years of working in Atlanta, Emery made the decision to step aside from the working world to become a full-time mother. Years later as her children were getting ready to spread their own wings, Emery too, was eager to return to the legal field. After receiving a postcard in the mail for CCPE’s biannual open house, Emery decided to attend the Paralegal Certificate information session and enroll in the program. “I wanted to get back into the field,” Emery said. “I was not comfortable trying to market myself after being out of the industry for so long. I wanted to refresh my skills. I needed to make myself marketable again.”

Because of her previous background as a paralegal, Emery enrolled in what she thought to be one of the most difficult classes: legal research and writing. Her instructor at the time was Kim Childs, now Cobb County’s Superior Court Judge. “I learned many practical tips [in legal research and writing],”Emery said. “Through her class, I got a part-time job. The job required writing samples and I used the memos and briefs that I prepared in class.” Not only did Emery receive an internship through the paralegal program, she also accepted her first part-time job in the field within months of starting the program. Emery currently works full-time in Marietta for a criminal defense and personal injury attorney – an opportunity she also found out about through one of the program’s instructors. “I was at the end of my program getting ready to go into

full-time work when one of the teachers emailed me about a job opening,” she said. In her current role, Emery prepares entries and motions for her attorney and communicates with the court on a regular basis to check on the status of their cases. She also manages all of her attorney’s case files and ensures the corresponding paperwork is in order. When asked what part of the paralegal certificate program she enjoyed the most, Emery smiled and said she couldn’t possibly pick one because she enjoyed every class. Emery said she tried to utilize all the resources that were available to her in the program. She encourages prospective students to do the same. “There are so many opportunities,” she said. “Take advantage of the program and the assistance that KSU offers.”

Web Design & Development Grad Uses Knowledge To Grow Business

As a longtime entrepreneur,

David Drake knew the one area of knowledge he was lacking could help grow his business. “I was a very good designer, but didn’t know how to post on websites,” Drake said. “For less than the cost of paying someone to build a website, I could pay for myself to attend class and learn it quicker.” Drake first discovered CCPE’s Web Design & Development certificate course from an online search. He then attended an Open House event to explore more. There he was assured that the eight-month course would indeed teach the “latest and greatest” design and development technology platforms. “There was no reason for me not to do this,” Drake said. “I love education and technology. The fact that the instructors were not pure academia also appealed to me. They were actually subject-matter experts actively working in the profession they teach. The return on investment was huge.” Drake’s previously launched business, reOneSpot.com, is an integrated enterprise cloud solution for real estate agents that streamlines

and automates the entire house buying process. By familiarizing himself with HTML coding and the current Adobe Creative Suite which included Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator, Drake was successfully able to apply several vital components to his business to help it flourish. He boasts the class helped him with overall marketing efforts that included keeping his website current and updated, creating dynamic and attractive email campaigns and SEO and Google analytics. “Everything we are doing now is online and in the cloud,” Drake said. “If you’re not familiar with how this stuff works, you’re at the will of other people. The latest trend is that everything must be mobile first. The design must translate between all platforms’ application interfaces.” When asked what advice he’d give future students considering this program as a jumpstart to a career in web design and development, Drake cited that the skills learned in class are readily transferable to what the job market is seeking. He said, “It’s imperative to develop the ability to create a few websites of your own. The market is going to want to see what you’ve done.” Perhaps the greatest incentive of the class is the opportunity it presents students to build their own website – which serves as the final project of the course. Drake says having that in your portfolio is paramount when applying for jobs in the field. Wired as an entrepreneur, Drake intends on using his newfound skills to continue building his business with the intent of selling it – then starting the process all over again. Always practicing the mantra of investing in himself, Drake plans to continue his education by enrolling in a project management agile certified practitioner (PMI-ACP) program. “Your learning cannot stop when you walk out of CCPE if you want to stay relevant in the industry,” he said.

FITNESS The Labyrinth A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator.
