Animals & Their Environments By Katie Grimes


ANTELOPE

FACTS: 1) Antelope’s have hooves that are made for the desert. 2) They eat bugs, grass, and even small birds. 3) They can stand on their hooves to eat leaves on trees.

HABITAT: Desert


BEARDED DRAGON

Fun Facts: 1) They can enlarge their throat. 2) Can grow up to 1622 inches. 3) Live in bushes and trees. They also like to lay on rocks.

CHEETAH

Facts:

HABITAT: Desert

1) Cheetahs are the fastest animals in the world. 2) An estimated 9,000-12,000 cheetahs live in Africa. 3) Even though they look like big cats, they cannot roar. They only purr!


DOVE HABITAT: Desert

Fun Facts: 1) Doves can live in deserts because they can fly a long time to find food/water. 2) Doves are found all over the U.S., South America, and Canada. 3) All doves are fruit and seed eaters.

ELEPHANT

Fun Facts: 1) Elephants are the largest land animals in the world. 2) They can live up to 70 years old. 3) The elephant’s trunk has more than 40,000 muscles in it.


FOX

Fun Facts: 1) Foxes are known to be curious and playful. 2) A group of foxes is called a skulk or a leash. 3) A male is called “dog fox” while a woman fox is called a “vixen.”

GROUNDHOG

HABITAT: Forest

FACTS: 1) Groundhogs eat approximately 1/3 of their weight everyday. 2) They are hibernators; they begin sleeping in October and don’t wake up until spring. 3) Groundhogs are skilled swimmers and climbers.


FACTS: 1) A group of hedgehogs is called an “array.” 2) Each one has between 5,000 to 7,000 quills. 3) Hedgehogs rely on their sense of smell and their hearing, because they’re eyesight is very poor.

INDOCHINESE TIGER HABITAT: Forest FACTS: 1) Found through south-east Asia, they are seen mostly to live in the mountainous forests. 2) Due to deforestation and hunting, they are seen to be endangered. 3) Because the tiger is so strong, it has no natural predictors.


FACTS: 1) Jays are omnivores, but they mostly stick to various vegetables, berries, and acorns. 2) They have the ability to mimic the hawk’s calls so they use this as a protection from other predators. 3) The oldest jay was found to be 17 years and 6 months old.

JAY

KOALA

FACTS: 1) Koalas have 5 fingers (digits) on each of their front paws. Their 2nd and 3rd digits are fused together to make a thumb. 2) Koalas are nocturnal; they usually sleep 18-20 hours a day. 3) Baby koalas are called “joeys.�

FACTS: 1. Outside of North America ladybugs are known as Ladybirds. 2. It is a myth that the number of spots shows a ladybug's age. 3. Orange ladybugs are poisonous, but since they are so small it is not worry to humans. 4. There are about 5,000 species of ladybugs.

MACAW

HABITAT: Forest

FACTS: 1) In the wild, Macaw’s help growth in the forest by dropping a lot of seeds on the ground while they are eating them. 2) They crack open nuts with their beaks. 3) They can live up to 80 years old!

NEWT

FACTS: 1) Newts differ from frogs and toads because they keep their tail as adults. 2) All Newts are carnivores that feed on living prey. 3) Newts are primarily active at night. 4) Many species of Newt have toxic secretions on their skin.


OSTRICH

FACTS:

HABITAT: Grasslands

1) Ostriches can run up to 40 mph. 2) When they sit on their nests, ostriches will lower their heads so that it remains hidden from predators (by looking like a bush). 3) One ostrich egg is equal to about 24 chicken eggs in


FACTS: 1) Prairie dogs live in tunnels under prairies. 2) They are considered “keystone� animals because they benefit 150 other creatures with their habitat building. 3) Their numbers have decreased by 95% over the past years.

PRAIRE DOG HABITAT: Grasslands


QUOLL HABITAT: Grasslands

FACTS: 1) Size of the quoll depends on the species. They can reach 14 to 29.5 inches in length and 3 to 15.4 pounds of weight. 2) Quolls are covered with either a grey, brown, or black coat. Basic color of the fur has prominent white spots. 3) They live in the underground burrows, inside hollow trees or caves.

HABITAT: Grasslands

1) A male rabbit is called a buck, a female is called a doe, and a young rabbit is a kitten or kit. 2) Hares are in the same family of animals as rabbits, but they have different genus. 3) During the summer they can release heat through their ears, legs, and feet.


SLOTH BEARS

HABITAT: Grasslands

FACTS: 1) Sloth Bears may walk slow, but they are capable of running faster than humans. 2) Sloth Bears have a strong sense of smell which helps them find termites and underground grubs to eat. 3) Sloth Bears are noisy eaters and the sounds they make while eating can be heard over 100 metres away. 4) Of all the bear species, the Sloth Bear has the longest tail.


TIGER SNAKE

FACTS: 1) Tiger snakes are carnivores. Their diet is based on mammals, birds, frogs, fish and lizards. 2) Tiger snake can reach 3 to 7 feet in length. 3) Tiger snake bask in the sun during the winter to increase body temperature and gain energy.

URIAL HABITAT: Grasslands FACTS: 1) The urial is a subspecies of the wild sheep. 2) It has reddish/brownish fur that fades during the winter and is more evident in the summer. 3) The urial is found in the central western part of Asia.


FACTS: 1) Their homes include the wetlands, mountains, and the grasslands. 2) Vulture’s stomach acid is different than humans/other animals. This allows them to eat meals that would make us sick. 3) Nothing goes to waste with a vulture. They even make good use of semi-digested and digested food.

WATER BUFFALO

FACTS: 1) Water buffalo’s are herbivores. It eats water plants, but it also eats grass and different types of leaves and herbs. 2) They are large animals and the males are three times bigger than females. They can reach 6.6 to 9.8 feet in height, and weight between 1500 and 2650 pounds. 3) Water buffalo’s live in muddy waters and swamps of tropical and subtropical areas of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Thailand.


X-RAY TETRA

FACTS:

HABITAT: Wetlands (the water)

1) The most distinctive feature of the x-ray tetra is the layer of skin that covers its small body. This allows the fish's backbone to be seen. 2) Like many other small, colorful fish, the x-ray tetra is a schooling type of fish that inhabit the region between the bottom and middle of the water as a group. 3) During the rainy season, they return to the flood-lands (wet lands) to swim.


YELLOW WARBLER

1) Yellow warblers can reach 4.7 to 5.1 inches in length and 0.3 to 0.4 ounces of weight. 2) Males can produce up to 3.240 cheery, whistling songs per day to attract females. Loud, "hissing" calls are used to scare other predators. 3) They can survive up to 10 years in the wild.

ZEBRA FISH

FACTS: 1) Close to the Himalayan Region, zebra fish tend to live in shallow ponds and waters. 2) The zebra fish has been used in scientific research moving towards development of a cure or a prevention for cancer, melanoma, and cardiovascular disease. 3) They are popular aquarium fish because they are large and pretty on the eyes.
