5 Tips for a Smooth Transition and Positive Experience for Your Child WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

As “Back to School” approaches, and more schools are opening their doors for in-person learning, it is crucial to address the anxiety your child may be facing. On top of the normal stress of going back to school, many students now have the added fears of being home for over a year and having to readjust and learn new social norms. Some students will also be attending new schools or buildings this Fall.

T

he good news? There are strategies to help ease your children back into school, while also building resiliency and strength of character. Here are 5 tips:

1

Prepare Ahead of Time. Visit the school, in person or via online tour, and print a map and schedule. If it’s possible, take your child for a tour of the building so he or she can find important places like the classroom, cafeteria, nurse’s office, school office, playground, lockers and restroom(s). Go online to find a map of the school and print it out. Also print out your child’s schedule. The

8

more your child feels familiar with the school layout, and his or her day-to-day schedule, the more comfortable he/she will be.

2

Find a Friend or Buddy. Social distancing may have made it difficult to find new friends or to socialize with the local community. However, finding a friend or buddy will help a child feel safe and included at school. Check out local neighborhood groups - like church, meetups, mom or youth groups - to find at least one student your child can connect with.

she feels more relaxed and at peace. Practice this tool with your child until he or she can easily access it on their own.

3

Empower Your Child. Many children were told that if they went to school, they could potentially catch a virus or get sick. It may be difficult for them to feel safe returning to school and crowded spaces. Set the tone for your child to enjoy class without abandoning precautions completely. You may say, “I'm so excited you're going back to school. Here’s what you can do to stay safe while you're there.” When children feel they have some control over a situation, it is empowering and helps reduce worry. Address any fears your child may have upfront, and brainstorm resources that may help them. These may include ways to stay safe, make new friends, remember locker combinations, etc.

being home with you for a long period of time. Every child responds differently; Keep a close eye to notice any behaviors or language that may indicate stress and anxiety. Validate your child, do not dismiss his or her fears. It is also a proactive and beneficial idea to begin teaching skills to cope with stress and build resiliency. Taking a deep, slow breath is one of the best and most simple ways to relax. Teach your child to “Take Ten.” Take a deep breath in while slowly counting to 5. Next, slowly let your breath out of the nose while counting 6-10. Teach your child to release any tension in the body or mind on each exhale and to continue this until he or

These tips and practices are powerful strategies for children because they help to build resiliency, stress reduction and coping skills that will be necessary both now and in the future. Practice and support your child however long they need it, but also encourage them to empower themselves. Back-to-school anxiety is a challenge every year for many families, and this year perhaps brings even more uncertainty. Remember that your child will look to you for cues on how to handle or feel about a situation. Offer him or her reassurance, brainstorm together and be the Grace and Love he or she needs to get through this difficult time. k

4

Begin a Routine. Setting a new routine will be helpful to ease the adjustments children will be facing this Fall. Consistent routines or activities that happen about the same time and the same way each day provide comfort and a sense of safety to children. Begin a bedtime routine and schedule, wake up earlier each day, and slowly transition back into a school year schedule.

5

Dealing with Anxiety. Separation anxiety is common amongst young children, but it can also occur if your child is used to

health Tips to Encourage Picky Eaters & Better Meal Prep

This Back to School Season Source: FIU’s Center for Children and Families

Feeding an entire family can be difficult enough on its own with busy evenings full of hustle and bustle. One additional factor that can cause even more headaches is dealing with a picky eater, especially a child whose preferred menu ranges from hot dogs to candy. on lunches, for instance, loved ones will likely enjoy the process more if all are pleased with the meals they enjoy later. Plan the meals. Once the whole gang is included and on-board, start brainstorming the recipes and dishes you’d like to make. Try starting with just one course at first – lunch is likely to be the easiest – to help keep meal-prepping simple at the start.

I

f you’re looking to widen the palate of your picky eater (or eaters), consider these tips to start down a path toward a more expansive slate of family meals. Start Slow. Loading up your little ones’ plates with steamed veggies and sauteed fish may be a surefire way to send them to the pantry for a less nutritious snack. Instead, try combining personal favorites with small portions of foods you’d like to introduce, such as chicken nuggets alongside green beans or topping pizza with black olives. Don’t Force It. While it can be frustrating to constantly hear “no” to fruits and veggies, forcing them upon children may turn them away for good. In addition, a struggle over eating certain foods may create a constant sense of frustration around mealtime, which may only decrease a child’s desire to expand his or her horizons. Create a Fun Experience. Remember not every meal has to include something new. On occasion, mix up mealtime by serving your children’s favorites, even

10

kiddos | August • September 2021

if it’s as simple as a hamburger or as creative as breakfast for dinner.

Buy ingredients in bulk. Whether your grocery shopping takes place over the weekend or on a free weeknight, purchasing ingredients and supplies in bulk – without overbuying perishables like fruits and veggies – can help make sure you have everything you need once it’s time to build the meals themselves.

Let Children Help Cook. Much like choosing their own ingredients increases the likelihood they’ll try something new, perhaps becoming part of the cooking process can help children see how a meal comes together.

Head to the kitchen. Pick one day each week when you can plan to spend ample time in the kitchen making your meals. Use cooking techniques that are less hands-on, like baking or slow-cooking, as often as possible so you can multitask throughout.

Steps for Better Meal Prep

Eating healthier and saving time around the house are common goals for many families, and there’s one solution that can help attain both: meal-prepping. By planning and preparing meals in advance of each week, you can practice better portion control while creating free time for normally hectic mornings, afternoons and evenings. Consider these tips to start your mealprepping process: Include the whole family. By letting everybody in on meal-prepping, you’re helping ensure everyone is satisfied with the breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks that become your end results. Even if you only plan to work in advance

Sort and divide. Using quality food containers to keep your meals as fresh as possible, start splitting up servings in ways that fuel you and family while instituting improved portion control. By sorting out specific meals ahead of time, you can begin creating better eating habits. k

The One Time You Shouldn’t Ignore a Messy Room Written By: Abby Watts

O

n my way back from the bathroom at a friend’s house, I walked by her 13-year-old son’s bedroom and got wide-eyed. She heard my footsteps stall and shouted from the living room, “Don’t look in there! It’s a disaster!” She said they were choosing their battles with him and the bedroom wasn’t one they were willing to fight. I understood, but I know my friend has fought mental illness, so I couldn’t help but think about the link between messy rooms and depression. Maybe for you, a tidy room is a requirement. Or maybe your kid’s bedroom is a space where he or she gets to exercise more freedom. Maybe you’re like my friend and it’s just not the hill you’re willing to die on. No matter what you’ve decided, here are some important things to know about when a messy room should concern you.

16

kiddos | August • September 2021

The Link Between Messy Rooms and Depression I hope this goes without saying, but if your son or daughter has a messy room, it doesn’t mean he or she is depressed. It might just be self-expression, disorganization, or a kid being a kid. Here’s where the connection between messy rooms and depression comes in. Some of the symptoms of depression— like fatigue, hopelessness, headaches, lack of focus, and trouble making decisions—can manifest themselves in the form of a messy room. If you don’t even feel like getting out of bed, the motivation to tidy up is less than zero. If you’re feeling sick, picking up clothes off the floor isn’t going to happen. And if you have a general sense of hopelessness, what’s the point of tackling that mystery pile in the corner?

How a Messy Room Can Make Depression Worse If depression runs in your family or your child has shown symptoms, a messy room might actually contribute to the problem. Research on depression shows that as many as two to three percent of children ages six to 12 and six to eight percent of teenagers may have serious depression. In my own home, a clear countertop gives me peace while a cluttered one makes me very anxious. If your child is overwhelmed by the chore of cleaning her room, or if the job is too much for him to tackle because of all the clutter, it could be sending your kid’s nervous systems into overdrive, leading to anxiety and making him or her feel depressed.

It’s scary to imagine a diagnosis of depression in your child, but hiding from it and making him or her walk that road alone is much scarier.

How a Mom Can Help If you’re concerned that what made it look like an F5 tornado hit your kid’s room could be coming from a deeper place, don’t be afraid to get your child screened for depression. It’s scary to imagine a diagnosis of depression in your child, but hiding from it and making him or her walk that road alone is much scarier.

Since a messy room can contribute to anxiety and depression, work with your child to declutter and simplify. Start small with just a five-minute pickup and offer to meet him or her halfway: If you get the floors clear, I’ll vacuum. And tackle the clutter in common areas so your children will feel less anxious during family time, too. k

family destinations

This Fall, enjoy the Florida Keys without the crowds! Marlin Bay Resort & Marina is a top-rated destination in the Florida Keys.

F

all is one of the best times to enjoy the Florida Keys without the crowds that are found during the winter months. It is the ideal time to visit because you can score some of the best rates of the year! Many resorts in

26

kiddos | August • September 2021

the Keys offer their lowest rates during September, October, and November – so it is the perfect time to visit. Private Vacation Rentals with Resort Amenities Marlin Bay Resort & Marina in Marathon Florida is a fantastic destination for families as it offers spacious upscale residences in a tropical setting. These 3-

and 4-bedroom luxury vacation homes have some of the best reviews in all the Keys and include open layouts, full kitchens, terraces, high-end décor, and luxe linens. The resort’s amenities include a stunning beach-entry heated pool, hot tub, pool bar, clubhouse, fitness center, outdoor games, state-of-the-art marina, and onsite concierge services.

The resort setting offers amenities and comforts you can’t experience at home. Extended vacation rentals are the current popular trend in travel. Because of Covid, so many more parents and children are working and studying from home with newfound flexibility to travel in offseason. This Fall, Marlin Bay can provide all the privacy and amenities you can dream of without the unwanted crowds. The Gulf-side waterfront location and private marina are perfect for families who want to bring their boat or rent from a local company so they can explore the area’s natural beauty and experience the world-famous fishing and lobstering spots. Family Friendly Laidback Luxury The resort is offering special rates for the Fall in their upscale, family-friendly residences. If you are looking for a place that is perfect for families, with 5-star reviews…yet quaint and private, Marlin Bay Resort & Marina is a wonderful option

for families and groups looking for time to create memories and connect. “Families love our location because of the privacy and easy access to all the resort amenities.” Says Claudine Williams, General Manager at Marlin Bay. “We are also located right in the middle of all that the Keys has to offer whether you want to fish, eat, explore, or simply just lounge by the pool – it is an ideal place for all ages.” An Underrated Island - Marathon Florida It may not be as bustling as Key West, or as familiar as Key Largo, but Marathon does offer something unique – authenticity and lots of family-oriented attractions and adventures. Families can explore Sombrero Beach and Bahia Honda State Park and area attractions including the Dolphin Research Center, The Turtle Hospital, and the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters. You can discover so many iconic sites and activities. For instance, Key West is only an hour drive away, and the drive alone is an experience all by

itself. The Seven Mile Bridge is the most famous, but there are 41 other bridges along this historic highway. Several popular restaurants are within walking distance from the resort including Overseas Pub & Grill, Keys Fisheries, and Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House. Local favorites include indulging in homemade pizza, subs, and salads from Upper Crust Pizza and eating breakfast at The Stuffed Pig. Either out on the water or a short drive away you really can experience it all in the Keys. You can stop by Big Pine Key that is filled with spectacular ecology; from freshwater ponds with alligators to the Keys’ world-famous miniature Key deer. The kids will love a stop at the Sheriff’s Animal Farm just before you arrive in Key West: they can check out rescued emus, pot-bellied pigs, ferrets, alpacas, tortoises, and even sloths. Safe travels… see you in the Keys!

Back to School Financial Tips for Students and Parents Source: Gen-You

Plenty of retailers are taking the opportunity to host back-to-school sales. The best sales and deals in 2021 are here! From clothes, uniforms, and school supplies to mattresses and dorm room essentials, you'll find everything you need for heading back to school.

T

his Back to School season Gen-You brings you 6 tips to buy smart, save and find out the best sales happening now:

1

Visit your local brick and mortar retailers. Stores such as Staples, Office Depot, and Walmart offer competitive bargains versus internet-only retailers. Look for specials, but try not to let good prices lure you into spending on things you don’t need. Also, don't forget about local discount retailers who have low pricing year-round, such as Dollar Store or Five Below.

2

Shop during your state’s sales-tax holiday. Many states offer a shopping day or weekend during which they waive state sales tax. On these days, you can avoid state and local taxes, which can approach 10% in some states.

3

Use store coupons and rewards programs. Before heading to a retailer, check your mailbox for weekly coupons and store websites for printable coupons. Art supply stores such as Michaels often have coupons in the Sunday paper. Or simply download them onto your smartphone. These can mean big savings on your more expensive items. Coupons may even be available to pick up “in store;” so don’t forget to ask once you’re there.

4

Combine your deals. If you find a great sale at your local retailer, shop during a sales tax exemption period, use some coupons, and earn rewards points, you have just hit the grand slam of savings! If you pay with a

credit card that gives you cashback, you can save even more—just don’t let those credit card balances run up and accrue interest charges.

5

Online shopping is still the biggest timesaver, and we all know time is money. In addition to Amazon, there are other web-based competitors such as Oriental Trading Company and eBay. If your family feels that time is your scarcest resource, searching for deals online may still be your best way to save both time and money.

6

Consider taking advantage of any pre-packaged, school supplies program offered by your school district. This usually involves paying online for a tailored packet of school supplies that is delivered to the school, ready for use. These programs can offer competitive pricing and save you the time and effort of shopping online or driving to the store. k

awareness

The Chemistry for Strong Communities

ational Health Center Week (August 8 – 14) is an annual celebration with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past five decades. Care Resource celebrates National Health Center Week as an additional way to raise awareness of the needs that exist in our communities regarding primary care and preventive health. We further speak out about our health center and the people and communities who rely on our services for healthy and productive lives.

During National Health Center Week, Care Resource honors those front-line providers, staff, and patients who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. From the very beginning of the crisis, Community Health Centers began finding innovative ways to provide preventative and primary care to their patients.

For National Health Center Week and throughout the month of August, Care Resource is offering new pediatric patients without health insurance a school backpack and a no-cost back to school exam including required vaccinations. Covered vaccinations include, but are not limited to the following: COVID-19, polio, Varivax (chickenpox), measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), DTap or Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis). New pediatric patients may also receive a back-to-school supply kit. To redeem this promotion, one MUST first make an

appointment by calling 305-576-1234 EXT: 470 (English) and 471 (Español). While there are countless reasons to honor America’s health centers, among the most important and unique is their long success in providing access to affordable, high-quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people throughout the United States. k

About Care Resource: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations.
