ONE ELK OF A WOMAN

After years of service, Kearny’s Melanie Pasquarelli takes charge as lodge’s Exalted Ruler

or so many years, Melanie Pasquarelli has given of herself for the betterment of the Kearny (and now Belleville) community, most especially with the Elks.

And now, she’s the local lodge’s exalted ruler, just the third woman to ever be elected to that position here. We asked her to explain how she rose in the ranks — and we bring you some of her journey in a Q&A format.

Tell me when you became an Elk, and more importantly, why?

I became an Elk approximately eight years ago. I had been around the organization for some time prior to that because my husband, Chris, had joined when he joined the dart league. We would attend different events and activities with the Elks and honestly, I

always felt included even as a non-member. At that time, I was an involved mom who was involved with the PTA, the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington and I was a Girl Scout leader.

One day, my neighbor who was a single mother came home in the middle of the day to check on her son who was home sick and while she was on lunch, her apartment went on fire. Her son was lucky to survive, and she lost everything with the exception of her dog and son. She didn’t have insurance and her life changed in an instant.

As someone who had experienced a house fire when I was 8, I knew the devastation and I knew I had to do something. I decided to work with some of the amazing volunteers within our Kearny community and put together a

Kearny’s Branch Library will be renamed for Christine Jablonski

Just a day after a very emotional funeral Mass that drew more than 800 mourners to St, Stephen’s Church, the late Christine Jablonski got one more honor, one that likely would have caused her to blush.

When Mayor Carol Jean Doyle took the mic at the March 19 meeting of Kearny’s governing body, she announced an additional resolution to add to the agenda — to rename the Kearny Branch Library the Christine Jablonski Branch Library.

She had been a member of the library’s board of trustees for 11 years and was a member of the Friends of the Kearny Public Library even longer.

“The next order of business is one that brings a lot of sadness and some joy,” Doyle said before reading a touching proclamation written for Jablonski. Before she was able to even completely read it, Jablonski received a standing

ovation from the large crowd gathered for the meeting that was started by Councilman Richard Konopka.

Doyle then added the resolution for the name change after reading the proclamation.

“I spoke to Josh Humphrey — we got a lot of requests that we do something in her honor,” Doyle said. “We both agreed that would be fitting to Christine’s memory and to perpetuate all the good that she did for our library.”

Then, Councilwoman Eileen Eckel, who serves on the library board, herself, also made comments about her late friend and colleague.

“I know the entire library board was planning to meet and have a conversation about that as well,” Eckel said. “But I guess they just hadn’t had the opportunity to meet yet. I’m sure they’ll be glad to know the town is recognizing Christine. Anyone who knew her knows that the last thing she’d want is to have her name on a building or recognition or accolades or attention given at all because

her call to service was personal, spiritual, intelligent. She will be greatly missed.”

There will be an official dedication sometime this summer when husband, Jeff, and sons, Nate and Eli, will be in town, on break, from their studies at the College of the Holy Cross of Worcester, Massachusetts, the very same institution their mom (and dad) both attended.

KPD: 2 arrested after Forest Junction crash displaces several residents

Acrash March 17 at the Forest Junction condos in Kearny resulted in significant damage, it displaced numerous residents and was all the result of road rage — but two men were arrested and now face serious

charges, police said.

First, some background.

Jonathan Vega, 30, of Newark and Alize Nulls, 28, of Paterson, were both taken into custody and charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, aggravated assault, causing or risking widespread injury or damage, obstruction by flight, trespassing, burglary, conspiracy

to commit burglary, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, possession of burglary tools and receiving stolen property.

Police say it appears two vehicles chased down a third, north on Davis Avenue, until reaching the dead end, at which point they all crashed. The occupants of the chasing vehicles then

jumped the driver they were chasing and stole his cash and other belongings.

The 12-unit condominium building has since been evacuated until it can be deemed safe.

A victim told police he was driving from Newark to Kearny to see a friend, when a Dodge began to tap into his rear bumper in an effort to get him to pull over. When victim wouldn’t pull over (likely to be robbed) the Dodge began ramming him harder, nearly causing him to spin out. Speeds rose and the robbers chased him into the crash.

(Editor’s note: The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office bans police pursuits but technically does not govern the actions of criminals, so they were allowed to chase their target.)

Police then canvassed the area and located the two suspects. Most surprisingly, the Dodge they had been driving was stolen; however, the criminals had outfitted it with a “valid” license plate belonging to a Toyota (a common tactic which obscures the stolen nature of the vehicle, therefore disallowing pursuits). The second pursuing vehicle was a rental, which was under another person’s name, also a common tactic to obscure police detection.

Meanwhile, camera footage confirmed the victim’s narrative. A handgun was reportedly also involved, but it was not recovered as the suspects likely rid themselves of it before apprehension.

The victim’s stolen cash was recovered from the captured suspects.

Police say the incident could have gone much worse, with three vehicles passing through residential streets at speeds that were high enough to partially take out the foundation of a building. The damage to the building was severe as the foundation wall, complete with electrical service and meters for the units, were taken out. The Kearny Fire Department inspected the building and deemed it to be hazardous and structurally unsound, thus, residents could no longer remain there until repairs

could be made.

Meanwhile, at the request of Mayor Carol Jean Doyle, Police Chief George King further explained details of the case.

“It began in Elizabeth and culminated in a road-rage incident and a crash in Harrison, King said. “Two vehicles were chasing each other. The vehicles then went into the parking lot (at Davis and Midland) where they rammed a residence, sending that vehicle through the wall and it damaged the power to the building — so the entire building was without power …all of the panels on the outside, they were destroyed.”

King also noted there was damage interiorly to water heaters, yet another reason why the building was deemed uninhabitable.

The suspects, meanwhile, were ultimately found in the meadows after police deployed their drones.

“The use of our drone has paid for itself 10 times over,” King said. “We were able to make an apprehension with this, we made one on Belgrove Drive where we found one of the parties hiding on a roof … we used the drone with the fights on Kearny Avenue that we previously discussed. So the use of this technology has really come in handy and paid dividends.”

Now, since numerous residents were, indeed, displaced, Officer Richard Poplaski Jr., one of the town’s two deputy coordinators of emergency management, was called to the scene and with the assistance of the

Newark-JC Tpk. crash claims life of one driver, injures several others: KPD

Acrash on the NewarkJersey City Turnpike two weekends ago claimed a life and left several other severely injured, the Kearny Police Department said.

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at approximately 7 a.m., the Kearny Police Department says it received a call on a motor vehicle crash Rt. 508 involving entrapped motorists and possible severe injuries.

One passenger, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, and several other involved sustained serious bodily injuries.

The Kearny Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate with the assistance of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Regional Fatal Collision Unit.

Initial officers arriving on scene — including Officer Richard Pawlowski of the Traffic Bureau — observed what appeared to be a fivevehicle crash, including a onevehicle roll over.

No motor vehicle summonses have been issued as yet.

In 5-4 vote, Kearny Council rejects latest Vermella PILOT

As a marathon Kearny Town Council meeting came to a close on March 19, the governing body voted against approving a new PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) to Ed Russo, the developer of Kearny’s Vermella apartment homes, this

one slated for 55 Passaic Ave. Voting against the proposal were Mayor Carol Jean Doyle and Councilmen George Zapata, Dennis Solano, Renato da Silva and Stathis Theodoropoulous. Voting in favor of it were Councilmembers Marytrine DeCastro, Richard Konopka, Eileen Eckel and Jerry Ficeto.

Russo and company pleaded their case for approval for more than two hours at the marathon council session that began at 7 p.m. Russo began to speak at approximately 10:30 p.m., after all of the regular council business has been discussed.

Russo distributed massive packets of information, prior

to speaking, to the council and to the public, including several pages of 11x17” handouts with imagery of what the Passaic Avenue property looked like in the past, what it looks like now and what it could look like in the future if he was granted a pilot.

Easter Egg Hunt

“We know it’s late and we’re going to try to keep our presentation as brief as possible,” Russo said as he began. He then pointed to actual PILOT payments his company has made over the years to the Town of Kearny. And, with that, he said the company’s projections for how 55 Passaic Ave. would perform were similar to those already approved by the governing body for previous properties.

sudden, when redevelopment started to come whether it was the project that we built or a handful of other projects that were built throughout town during that period, there was a meaningful change in the tax rate once redevelopment started to kick in and I think for those of you that were here when the redevelopment plans for Passaic Avenue and Schuyler Avenue were adopted back in 2000 and 2002, I believe that was the vision at the time — it was improve these properties and how do we create new revenue when our tax base is continuing to increase each year.”

Despite these pleas, when it came time to vote, some just weren’t convinced. And there was a noticeable tension as the council voted.

Those payments totaled nearly $6 million — and included permit fees, contribution payments for the PILOTs and improvements to the town.

First, Eckel and Konopka voted “yes” while offering their rationales.

DeCastro also voted “yes” as a First Ward representative.

Russo also noted those improvements to the town included re-pavement of Bergen Avenue, intersection upgrades at Schuyler and Bergen avenues, a storm line easement, the to-be-built Passaic Riverfront walkway, a new water main for Marshall Street, improvements to Clark and Marshall streets, more Passaic Avenue upgrades and various signal improvements.

“It’s my ward and the area has been blighted for years,” she said. “I look forward to seeing the site prosper and come to fruition. I’m looking forward to seeing the area continue to be vibrant and welcoming to all residents. And I thank you for working with the Town of Kearny …”

In total, $6.7 million spent. And this is in addition to land taxes he’s required to pay.

“If you look at the difference between the total payments that we made for one year — one year only … It’s a $2 million swing,” Russo said. “(And) $2 million of additional revenue has an enormous impact in a community the size of Kearny, but you’ll see when we get to the bottom of this table when we look at what the Kearny tax rate has done over the last 20 years, it’s no coincidence that the tax rate was increasing meaningfully for extended periods time over here and then all of a

Then Ficeto joined in a “yes” vote and at this point, it seemed, at 4-0 in favor, the ordinance would be adopted. But that was the final affirmative vote. Though he proffered the ordinance that would have granted the PILOT — and he moved it be adopted — the first “no” vote came from Zapata.

He, like his colleagues, thanked all who presented that night and he thanked Russo for the positive contributions he has made to Kearny. But then, things turned.

“This is also in my ward, and

spaghetti dinner. At the time, my husband called Bill Dow Jr. from the Kearny Elks and immediately he agreed to help.

He offered the lodge so I could host the event, he told us the Elks would help with anything we needed, and, in the end, they made 10 gallons of homemade sauce and sausage. The thing that resonated with me at the time was how quickly they agreed to help someone that they didn’t even know.

As it turns out the event had to be relocated to the LCCC because we had such a great response and the lodge would not be able to hold that many.

When the event started, there were the Elks who donated the sauce and sausage actually attending the fundraiser for my neighbor. It was inspiring to see people just be amazing members of the community and to see people rise to the occasion for no other reason but to do what is right. At that point, I wanted to be like them, so I asked my husband to sponsor me and I became an Elk.

I understand you may be only the second woman to become ER. It’s kind of great especially since we now have our first female mayor. Tell me what that means to you.

It’s amazing being a female

Elk, especially given that the history of our organization was male. Throughout the course of the history of the Elks, the ladies were always supporting the efforts of their spouses and had the Ladies Auxiliary. Those woman set the foundation of what we see today.

I am actually the third female Exalted Ruler from our lodge; however, I have a lot of support within the organization from other wonderful women who are just as giving. Once Belleville Elks decided to merge with us, we gained even more women in leadership roles within the organization. The Elks have come full circle and now have had ladies serve in several capacities. I am lucky to have been able to witness three wonderful ladies become New Jersey State Elk Association Presidents, two of whom have been present at our annual Incredible Duck Race.

What are some of the things you’d like to do in your first term as ER?

As I mentioned, our lodge had a recent merger. We have been able to open up our lodge to members from Belleville, but like any new marriage, we have had some obstacles. The needs of the Belleville community are just as diverse as the needs of the Kearny community, and it is my goal as the Exalted Ruler to ensure we are doing

our best to meet the needs in both communities. Over the last few years, we have put a lot of programs in place that help support Kearny and it is time to evaluate and execute how we can do something similar in Belleville.

What are some of the things you’d like to continue to do that have already begun?

We do some amazing things at our lodge and it brings me great joy to see them continue. My goal is to ensure we not only continue these programs, but we identify additional opportunities to be there for both of the communities we serve. Our lodge started in 1906 and as a service organization, we always

want to provide programs that have value and give back to our communities.

Currently, our lodge helps support many of our schools with donations and supplies to help support positive behavior such as the rewards system put in place at several of the elementary schools. We support drug education and awareness through handing out literature and sponsoring our local teens to attend the Path to Peer Leadership program that the NJ Elk Drug Awareness Committee hosts annually in Long Branch.

As we all know, the opioid epidemic is ongoing and anything we can do to ensure we are helping children make positive life choices is extremely

important. Our Special Children’s Committee supports our special-needs community with donating educational materials, hosting events, opening up Turtle Back Zoo for Friendship Day and sponsoring campers to attend Elks Camp Moore.

The amount we do for veterans is unmatched. Many of our members take time out of their weekends to deliver brand new furniture and household supplies to veterans who are transitioning from homelessness to housing. Our Veteran’s Committee also provides care packages to the patients at the local VA hospital, and we donate

clothing and toiletries to the Kearny VOICE.

We host many youth programs including our Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Batter’s Up programs and we provide books and coats to children in need. For the last four years, we have been fortunate to host and help coordinate the Kearny Giving Tree with our current Mayor

and active member Carol Jean Doyle. I think that continuing these fantastic programs while working on increasing our visibility and commitment to the Belleville community as well will really help us grow as an organization and encourage others to join our herd.

Give us an idea of some of the bigger things you do within the Elks

In order to do great things, you need to find ways to ensure the funds are there when you get a request for assistance. That need to serve the community gave birth to an idea of what has become our largest annual fundraiser, the Incredible Duck Race. Annually we close down a portion of Belgrove Drive and host this event. We offer live music, vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, a

scavenger hunt and a rubber duck race. All of the proceeds of this event help fund the many programs our lodge offers and I am proud to say that I have been the coordinator since the inception. When I am not requesting donations, looking for participants or selling raffle tickets I also serve our North Central District as the Elks National Foundation chairwoman. Both of these activities help

us make our charitable dreams a reality.

You often tell me how great your team is — tell me about them and why they are so special?

My team is so special because they are just as the word implies ... a team. They work together to ensure we can provide our programs and take care of the needs within our communities. I have members who are happy to rise to the occasion and pitch in regularly.

Many team members work full-time but help out in the lodge in many capacities. I have a local educator who regularly cleans our lodge. This may seem like a small task, but given we are open to the public anywhere from 6 to 7 days a week having a member step in helps use the funds that a cleaning company would cost toward charity.

I have a few other members who are always willing to assist with the basic maintenance of the lodge and this helps us save a tremendous amount of money annually. Our members tend to show up and participate in many of our programs even though many of them have very active lives. As I say often, many hands equal light work and with their participation, we are able to accomplish so much more than many other service organizations.

Our organization thrives because of everyone pitching in and that is exactly why I enjoy being part of this organization. This mentality is something I’ve witnessed at both a lodge and district level. In fact, many of the volunteers on the day of the duck race are from all over our district.

SPORTS & HEALTH Kearny’s Jacob Cardenas takes fourth at NCAA Wrestling Championships

For the second year in a row Jacob Cardenas can call himself an NCAA All-American.

On Saturday, at the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Cardenas, a Kearny native and Cornell University standout, added another line to his already stellar resume when

he took fourth place at 197 pounds.

Cardenas went 6-2 during the three-day event, finishing his senior season with a 22-8 record. Five of those wins came through the consolation bracket as he bounced back from a second round upset at the hands of Missouri’s Rocky Elam on Thursday night.

“I did what I had to do,”

Joe Sorce knows that his Belleville baseball team might have taken some people by surprise last spring when it went 20-7 and won the Super Essex Conference - Colonial Division title with a very young roster.

With much of that group back

this spring, that past success comes with an understanding that this version of the Buccaneers won’t be able to sneak up on anyone as they begin their title defense.

“They know that and we really hit home with these kids in the offseason that you got to realize you are the hunted now,” Source said. “We won our

Cardenas said. “I think I did good enough to get by and I definitely could’ve done better. But overall, I’m happy with my effort and I think I did a good job of focusing in the wrestlebacks.”

Cardenas’ wrestleback run started on Friday morning with a 4-2 decision over Jaxon Smith of Maryland followed by an 11-2 major decision against Northern

Iowa’s Wyatt Voelker.

The winning streak continued into the late session as Cardenas downed Nebraska’s Silas Allred by a 5-2 decision then recorded a pin at 1:11 to defeat Stephen Little of Little Rock.

The consolation semifinals on Saturday morning brought a familiar foe in Elam. But this time, Cardenas came out on top with a 7-3 decision to

advance to the consolation final for third place overall. “It definitely felt good to avenge the loss,” said Cardenas. “I didn’t really do anything different to be honest. I just let go of all nerves or any doubts I had earlier in the tournament and went out there fearless.”

league last year, so everybody’s looking at us. They’re looking at us and saying ‘Belleville’s the team to beat,’ if we are or we’re not. It doesn’t matter.”

With all, but one starter back from a lineup that averaged nine runs per game, the offense should once again be the strength for the Bucs.

That offensive firepower

again start at the top of the lineup with sophomore third baseman Crismel Deleon (.361 average with 21 walks, three homers, 27 stolen bases and 35 runs) expected to lead off and junior shortstop Ayden Carrero (.405 average with 33 runs, 21 RBI and 23 stolen bases) set to hit second.

Both are viewed as two of

Essex County’s top up-andcoming talents.

“Those two guys, batted one, two last year, did a great job, and they’re most likely going to start the year in that role,” said Sorce. “And we’ll go from there with that.”

ended in defeat, falling to Oklahoma’s Stephen Buchanan, 9-4, in the third place

match on Saturday.

Despite the loss, it capped off a banner weekend for Cardenas and Cornell.

Congratulations Jason Bernstein on the arrival of his new baby boy!

David Nathaniel Bernstein was born on March 5, 2024 at 8:21 p.m. weighing in at 7lbs. Wishing you and your new family the best!

As a team, Cornell took second place with 72.5 points, trailing only Penn State. It marked the third time Cornell has ever finished second and the first time since 2011.

According to Cardenas he “has a good idea on what I want for my graduate year,” he’s decided to take some time off to rest before making a final decision on his next destination.

“It means the world to me,” Cardenas said. “To say we are one of the best teams in the country makes me so proud to be a Cornellian. We all work extremely hard and it’s great that an Ivy League team is able to get on the map like that.”

is a lung infection that can spread to the eyes and cause ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (OHS). If a person inhales spores from the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus, they can contract histoplasmosis. It causes mild, flu-like symptoms that usually clear up on their own in a matter of weeks. But if the spores spread from the lungs to the eyes, a person can contract OHS, which causes scarring in the back of the eye. In some people the scarring causes growth of abnormal blood vessels that lead to vision loss. There are usually no early symptoms of OHS, but eventually a person with the disease will see straight lines that appear wavy and blind spots in their field of vision.

A dilated eye exam can assess

histoplasmosis symptoms in more detail The ophthalmologist uses drops to dilate the pupils. Dilation makes it possible to perform a more thorough exam and check for abnormal blood vessels, fluid, inflammation, and white spots. Please call 201-896-0096 to schedule an appointment. Our office is located at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst. Call 201-896-0007 if you need to reach our optical shop. We accept most insurance. We offer comprehensive eye health evaluations and necessary follow-up care.

P.S. Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus in the soil that comes from bird and bat droppings. Spores from the fungus can be released when the soil is disturbed.

After the NCAA Tournament performance, Cardenas, a two-time NJSIAA state champion at Bergen Catholic, improved his overall college mark to 71-22.

While Cardenas has one more season of eligibility due to the NCAA granting an

extra “Covid Year” it won’t be at Cornell since the Ivy League decided not to grant their student-athletes the fifth year of eligibility.

The thought of this past weekend being the last time in a Cornell singlet was not on his mind during the NCAA Tournament, but he knows it will be emotional when he graduates in May with his degree from Cornell’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning program.

“It hasn’t kicked in yet, so I can’t tell you what it feels like now, but I’ll most definitely shed a tear or two after graduating this May,” Cardenas said. “All I know now is how grateful I am to be a part of this school and this amazing program. I owe my life to this team!”

to be determined, Sorce knows the middle of the Bucs’ lineup will be a combination of Josh Abramon, Santiago Nunez, Jordan Rosario and Sean Walsh.

Abramson, a senior captain and outfielder, hit .333 with 22 runs and 17 stolen bases. Rosario, a junior who hit .409 with 18 RBI, can and will play all over the infield and outfield. Walsh, a sophomore 1B/OF, hit .329. Nunez, a left-handed junior, hit .406 in limited action and is set to play primarily first base and designated hitter.

Junior Rafael Matos, who hit .308 and 17 runs scored last year, will also be in the mix at first base, but is expected to see a lot more time in the outfield than a

season ago. Junior Derek Gonzalez (21 runs), is another guy with extensive infield experience, who could see time in the outfield. Senior Bernie Fajardo and promising sophomores Marcos Atehortua and Jordan Armstrong could as well.

Gonzalez and Rosario shared second base last year. Senior Luis Deleon will see time at third base and both Atehortua and Armstrong will be in the mix all over the infield.

Junior Ariancy Paulino and senior Marino Perez are once again set to share the catching duties with freshman Damir Giddens vying for a role behind the plate.

On the mound, Belleville will once again rely heavily upon its bullpen to get through games. A big reason for that is the onetwo combo of senior captain

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a potentially serious condition characterized by the formation of blood clots within deep veins, typically in the legs. It occurs when blood flow is slowed or disrupted, allowing the formation of clots. DVT can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected leg. If a clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, it can lead to a life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism. Risk factors include prolonged immobility, surgery, obesity, pregnancy, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions. Prompt diagnosis is crucial, and imaging tests such as ultrasound are used to confirm the presence of blood clots. Treatment for DVT involves blood thinning medications to prevent clot growth and reduce

the risk of complications.

Obesity is a risk factor for DVT. Regular exercise lowers the risk of blood clots. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight, maintain weight loss or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more. To schedule an appointment, please call PREMIER CARE ASSOCIATES OF WEST HUDSON at 201-998-7474. We are located at 512 Kearny Ave., Suite B, where walk-in patients are always welcome 7 days a week.

P.S. Preventing DVT includes staying active, avoiding prolonged immobility, maintaining a healthy weight, and using compression stockings during high-risk situations.

Premier Care Associates of West Hudson is available on a walk-in or appointment basis for your primary healthcare needs.

James Monroig, who had a 1.99 ERA in 24 2/3 innings and Perez who posted a 1.19 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.

“James pitched in, I believe, 13 games last year,” Sorce said. James was one of our top guys. When you can get one of your

top guys on the mound in that many games, even in short work and ending two innings, two outs, whatever it is, that’s huge.

“Our bullpen really was a key to our success last year because James and Marino coming in games really shutting it down

and sometimes using both of them, that was big for us.”

Luis Deleon (3.50 ERA in 16 innings) and Armstrong should further bolster the bullpen as relievers while also getting a start or two in weeks with four or five games.

Walsh, who had a 3.60 ERA in 44 2/3 innings, is once again the top starter on the mound, with Abramson and Carrero are also back in the Bucs’ rotation.

Belleville begins the regular season on April 1 at home against Cedar Grove in a matchup of the Colonial Division’s top two teams a year ago. Division games at Newark Academy and Newark Tech follow with a home independent contest against Verona on Saturday, April 6.

North Arlington baseball looks to build upon last year’s finish

Paul Marcantuono saw significant progress from his North Arlington baseball team as it overcame an 0-7 start to finish the 2023 season at 12-13.

While time on the field has been limited so far this preseason, the Vikings’ head coach sees a group that resembles the version he saw late in the year when they closed the season with 12 wins in the final 18 games.

“They proved to themselves that they can compete with some of these teams and win some big games,” Marcantuono said. “And they also proved to themselves that they weren’t the 0-7 team that started. They’re more like the 12-6 team they were to end the season. That’s the team that I’m seeing early in the season. That’s how they’re working.”

Several of the key figures from

last year’s turnaround are back this spring, including one of the area’s best catchers in senior Robert Kairys. The three-year starter caught every inning for the Vikings last year as he hit .312 with three home runs and 18 RBI, while bringing a rare level of maturity baseball IQ behind the plate.

“I trust him with most of the pitch calls and just the daily operations are calling out where the ball is supposed to be going and stuff like that,” said Marcantuono. “His knowledge of baseball is very high and he’s just like having a second coach out there. it’s important for your catcher to have that quality and Robert possesses that quality.”

Another cornerstone of the North Arlington lineup is at first base where senior Kevin Zidiak is back after a monster junior season. The 6-foot-3 Zidiak, a three-year starter, hit .402 with

16 walks, 29 runs scored and 10 stolen bases out of the leadoff spot and should continue in that role this spring.

“His biggest quality is that he sees a ton of pitches, fouls a ton of baseballs off, and he ends up on base,” Marcantuono said. “I think last year he had a hit in 21 out of the 25 games or something like that. So he gets the inning started, he gets the game started, sees a lot of pitches. He’s not going to be impatient. He waits for his pitch.”

Zidiak could also see time in the outfield this spring thanks to the return of junior Rohan Patel, who missed all of last year due to injury.

Sophomore Luis Ramos, who started at second base late last season is back at the position this year with junior Julian Moya vying for time.

Another senior entering his third year as a starter is shortstop

Robert Carselda, who hit .276 with 18 runs and 16 RBI. Ramos will also see time at shortstop with Carselda serving as one of North Arlington’s top starting pitchers.

Sophomore Chris Troyano is poised for a big season at third base after getting 22 hits as a freshman. Junior Joshua Sheffler will also see time at the hot corner.

Sophomores Matt Higgins and Richard Vargas will also be vying for time in the infield.

The starters in the outfield are likely to vary by the game, but one constant out there will be senior Nate Smith, a three-year starter.

Besides for Zidiak and Sheffler, sophomore Sam Rosamelia, senior Matt Green and junior Kevin Barrone are also in the mix for playing time in the outfield.

On the mound, Carselda (3.68 ERA) and Troyano will be the

top two starters. Patel has been impressive in the preseason and will also be in the rotation along with Zidiak, who looks to regain the form of his sophomore season after an injury plagued junior year on the mound.

Smith, Ramos, Sheffler and Rosamilla are also sure to see innings for a pitching staff, which hopes to be bolstered by the return of senior Luca Ziakos later in the season.

Seeking to avoid a repeat of last year’s slow start, North Arlington opens the season on Monday, April 1 at Butler before its home opener against Park Ridge two days later. Division play within the always competitive NJIC National Division begins on April 8 when the Vikings travel to Rutherford before home contests against St. Mary’s of Rutherford and Secaucus.

PILOT

Continued from Page 6

I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several residents, both those who live near the proposed development as well as those who commute every day. The overwhelming responses to this proposed PILOT has been concern — quality of life concerns — as well as the potential impact this may have on safety. I was not part of the council in 2015 … I was still in high school. We all remember the old bat factory as well as remembering how it is now. But I still can’t shake the concerns my residents have presented to me. The quality of life concerns, so it is with that I vote ‘no.’”

Then Theodoropoulous voted “no” without comment. Solano, admitting the whole process made him “nervous,”

then voted “no.” Next, da Silva voted “no” without discussion.

And Doyle was the tie-breaking voter.

“I’m also a ‘no,’” the mayor said. “I am consistent with that. I voted ‘yes’ once … and I walked that ward, and the residents were adamant — no PILOT. I’m consistent and staying with my ‘no’

vote.”

Meanwhile, Sydney J. Ferreira, former candidate for mayor, who has long campaigned against PILOTs anywhere, says he was elated by the vote, which finished just after he’d been asked to leave the Town Council chambers — he was cheering on the “no” votes, but was

asked to stop and this, removed.

“I woke up so happy this morning, Ferreira said. “Three years ago, when I announced that I was running for Mayor, a key issue kept coming up in my conversations with residents and I quickly adopted it as part of our platform. I wanted to see an end to the tax breaks for wealthy developers like Russo Development (the builder of the four Vermella buildings).

“Last night, we finally notched a victory in that effort. The Town Council voted 5 to 4 against the financial agreement for 55 Passaic Ave. that would have given more generous tax breaks to Vermella Development for their fifth residential building. The Town Council listened to our concerns, and they did the right thing.”

Red Cross, he found temporary housing for all residents, including for some who had no nearby family to stay with.

Residents were, however, allowed to retrieve some belongings before being placed in temporary housing.

King also noted how fortunate it was the incident concluded as it did.

“With the type of incident … there were no injuries,” the chief said.

King says investigators will be backtracking through the municipalities where the chase occurred to see if further charges could be levied.

Doyle, meanwhile, who like Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Ficeto, was at Kearny PD Headquarters after the incident, took time to levy praise for how well the KPD handled the incident.

“I want to compliment Officer Poplaski — he was excellent, took time with each resident, he provided donuts and coffee to keep everybody calm,” the mayor said. “Two families didn’t have families to go to (and to stay with.)
