Rosemarie Badaczewski y Kriemhild Meyer tenían 15 años cuando fueron fotografiadas estrechando sus manos ante el muro en construcción que separaría Alemania en dos mitades. Casi 60 años después las conocidas como Wall Girls se han reencontrado gracias a la iniciativa de las autoridades germanas para localizarlas con el fin de conmemorar el aniversario de la construcción del famoso muro el pasado mes de agosto.

Rosemarie Badaczewski and Kriemhild Meyer were 15 years old when they were photographed shaking hands in front of the wall that split Germany into two parts. Almost 60 years later the two ‘Wall Girls,’ as they were called, met up again last August thanks to authorities who wanted them to help commemorate the construction of the famous wall.

Fast 60 Jahre später trafen sich die Mauermädchen dank einer Initiative deutscher Behörden, um am Jahrestag im vergangenen August an den Bau der berühmten Mauer zu erinnern, wieder.

Abbey Road hubiera sido una calle más del callejero londinense si no hubiera sido porque los Beatles se fotografiaron cruzando el paso de peatones que llevaba a los estudios donde grababan. Este año se han cumplido los 50 años de aquella imagen y cientos de fans de todo el mundo han acudido allí para hacer su propia versión de la foto.

Abbey Road would have been just one more London street if the Beatles hadn’t been photographed crossing it on their way to the recording studio. This year marked 50 years since the picture was taken and hundreds of fans from all over the world showed up to take their own versions of the picture.

Die Abbey Road wäre nur eine gewöhnliche Londoner Straße gewesen, wären nicht die Beatles auf dem Weg ins Aufnahmestudio beim Überqueren derselben fotografiert worden. In diesem Jahr sind 50 Jahre nach der Aufnahme des Fotos vergangen und Hunderte von Fans aus der ganzen Welt kamen dorthin, um ihre eigenen Versionen dieses Bildes zu fotografieren.

Tras meses de trabajos de limpieza y restauración, la fachada de la Casa Batlló vuelve a brillar con todo su esplendor. Para su recuperación ha sido necesaria la intervención de profesionales de siete gremios distintos en un proceso complejo debido a los cinco materiales que la componen (piedra, hierro, cerámica, vidrio y madera), cada uno de los cuales ha necesitado un tratamiento específico.

After months of cleaning and restoration, the facade of Casa Batlló is again shining in all its splendour. The job needed professionals from seven different building trades because of a complex process owing to the five materials that make it up (stone, iron, ceramics, glass and wood), each one of which demanded special treatment.

Nach monatelangen Reinigungs- und Restaurierungsarbeiten erstrahlt die Fassade der Casa Batlló wieder in ihrer ganzen Pracht. Der Bau setzt sich aus fünf unterschiedlichen Materialien – Stein, Eisen, Keramik, Glas und Holz – zusammen, die jeweils ein besonderes Verfahren erfordern, weshalb sich Fachleute aus sieben verschiedenen Gilden an den Arbeiten beteiligten.

The church of Sant’Alessio, on the Aventino, one of the seven hills of Rome, was hiding a treasure. It is a medieval fresco in an excellent state of conservation that was hidden behind a wall for more than 900 years. The experts date it from the 12th century, and it is exceptional not only for the images (Christ the Pilgrim and a saint that is probably Alexis) but for the brilliance of its colours.

Die Basilika von Sant’Alessio auf dem Aventin, einem der sieben Hügel Roms, barg einen Schatz. Es handelt sich um ein mittelalterliches Fresko, das in ausgezeichnetem Zustand erhalten ist und mehr als 900 Jahre lang hinter einer Mauer verborgen war. Experten gehen davon aus, dass es aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammt. Das Fresko gilt nicht nur wegen der Ikonen, auf denen der pilgernde Jesus und ein Heiliger, bei dem es sich wahrscheinlich um Alexius handelt, zu sehen sind, sondern auch wegen der Brillanz seiner Farben als außergewöhnlich.

Este centro cultural, el tercer museo con más visitas en Madrid, ha planificado y presentado para la nueva temporada cinco nuevas muestras, algunas en colaboración con el British Museum de Londres o el Centre Pompidou de París. Estas van desde la historia antigua hasta el arte contemporáneo.

El Auditorio Alfredo Kraus y el Teatro Pérez Galdós han anunciado su programación cultural para los próximos cuatro meses en Gran Canaria. Más de 120 funciones que van desde el jazz, el rock, la música barroca o de guitarra hasta los recitales en solitario, el teatro, los musicales, la danza y el humor.

This cultural centre, the third most-visited museum in Madrid, has presented its new season, with five exhibits, some of them in collaboration with the British Museum of London or the Centre Pompidou in Paris. They range from ancient history to contemporary art.

The Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and the Teatro Pérez Galdós have announced their cultural programs for the next four months in Gran Canaria. More than 120 events, ranging from jazz, rock and Baroque and guitar music to solo recitals, theatre, musicals, dance and humor.

In diesem Kulturzentrum, und dem am dritthäufigsten besuchten Museum Madrids, sind für die neue Saison fünf Ausstellungen mit Exponaten von der Antike bis zur zeitgenössischen Kunst geplant. Die Zusammenarbeit erfolgte teilweise mit dem British Museum in London und dem Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Auf der Kanareninsel wurde das Kulturprogramm des Auditorio Alfredo Kraus und des Teatro Pérez Galdós für die kommenden vier Monate angekündigt. El origen de su nombre aún está por resolver. Algunos lo achacan a la lengua guanche. Otros, a ecos árabes. Lo claro es que La Orotava, al norte de Tenerife, es un lugar cuyo topónimo costará olvidar, provenga de donde provenga. Sus atractivos naturales y arquitectónicos la convierten en un destino imprescindible de la isla. Situada en las faldas del Teide, con una población de poco más de 40.000 habitantes, este municipio conserva uno de los cascos urbanos mejor preservados del país. Las casas blancas y sus tejados adoquinados motean un terreno escalonado con jardines, museos y la tranquilidad propia del archipiélago. Cuenta, además, con tres playas y con la posibilidad de internarse en multitud de excursiones por sus relieves. La Orotava responde a un combinado total de “cultura, patrimonio, tradiciones y gastronomía”, según enumeran desde su consistorio. “Es la única ciudad de Canarias con un centro casi enteramente intacto. En la villa, la historia sale al encuentro del paseante y, sobre todo, del visitante extranjero, que desde siglos ha transitado buena parte de sus calles dejando testimonios alabadores”, presumen, ampliando su embrujo a toda la extensión: La Orotava abarca 218,9 kilómetros cuadrados y un desnivel desde el mar hasta los 3.718 metros del Teide, erigiéndose en el primer municipio de España con esta abrupta característica. “Además, está rodeada de espacios naturales protegidos –como la reserva de Pinolere, el parque de la Corona Forestal, la Resbala y la de Costa de Acentejo– con un ecosistema único y hábitats amenazados que contribuyen a mantener procesos ecológicos esenciales para mantenerlos”, indican. Desde el Ayuntamiento describen también las playas del Bollullo, Los Patos y el Ancón como una zona de “extraordinaria belleza” que se complementa con

The origin of its name still hasn’t been explained. Some attribute it to the Guanche language. Others, to Arab influence. What is clear is that La Orotava, in the northern part of Tenerife, is a place name that’s hard to forget, whatever its origin. Its natural and architectural attractions make it one of the island’s essential destinations. Situated on the slopes of the Teide volcano, and with a population of a little over 40,000, this is one of the best-preserved towns in the country. The white houses and their tiled roofs occupy a landscape terraced with gardens, museums and the peace common to the archipelago. It also has three beaches and there are a number of excursions to the surrounding areas. La Orotava offers a combination of “culture, artistic legacy, traditions and gastronomy,” its town hall declares. It’s the only city in the Canaries “with an almost entirely intact historical centre. In the town, history meets the visitors and especially the foreign visitors who have wandered by its streets for many centuries, leaving behind some of the most beautiful pages of travel literature.” La Orotava takes in 218.9 square kilometres and runs steeply from sea level to the 3,718 metres of the Teide, the highest difference of any town in Spain. “In addition, it is surrounded by protected natural areas –like the Pinolere reserve and the Corona Forestal and Resbala Costa de Acentejo parks– and has a unique ecosystem and habitats that maintain essential ecological processes.”

La Orotava spiegelt eine ausgewogene Kombination aus „Kultur, Erbe, Traditionen und Gastronomie“ wider, so das Konsistorium der Gemeinde, „es ist die einzige Stadt der Kanarischen Inseln mit einem nahezu intakten Ortskern. Parece mentira que, incluso dejando de lado el Teide, se concentren tantas cosas en este rincón de callejuelas con inmuebles del siglo XVI y la paulatina presencia de parques o plazas desde donde contemplar otro de sus puntos fuertes: el cielo. “Una serie de factores climatológicos y geográficos determina la excelente calidad del cielo para las observaciones astronómicas”, comentan en el Ayuntamiento al respecto. “Debido a su desnivel, podemos situarnos por encima del típico mar de nubes y evitar, en gran medida, la contaminación lumínica de poblaciones cercanas”, analizan, “y Tenerife se encuentra próxima al ecuador terrestre: esto supone tener visibilidad de todo el hemisferio norte celeste y parte del sur, prácticamente todo el año”. Del resultado, señalan, tiene la culpa una ley pionera en el archipiélago que regula la iluminación de exteriores, la potencia radioeléctrica, las industrias contaminantes y el tráfico aéreo sobre los observatorios canarios. Pero no se acaba allí. Hay dos factores más que hacen de La Orotava algo singular. Uno es el de su tradición bodeguera. Desde el siglo XV, esta villa rinde tributo al vino, elaborando dos tipos con denominación de origen: el malvasía y el ‘canary sack’. Ambos se pueden catar en cualquiera de sus establecimientos, acompañados de comida típica canaria. El último encanto es el de la artesanía. “Los calados y los bordados son prueba de gran habilidad y depurado gusto. Son los que más atención despiertan entre nuestros visitantes. Una labor que comenzó siendo un entretenimiento femenino y se ha convertido en un arte de métodos y doctrinas muy antiguas”, destacan

The town hall describes the beaches of Bollullo, Los Patos and Ancón as an area “of extraordinary beauty” that is complemented by a visit to its museums: “La Orotava offers the Tapestries Ephemeral Art Centre, the Conception Treasure Sacred Art Museum, the Iberian-American Craft Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. It's extraordinary that, not even counting the Teide, there should be so many different things in this maze of streets, with their buildings from the 16th century and the parks and squares from which to observe another of its strong points: the sky. “There are a number of climatological and geographical factors that determine the excellent quality of La Orotava’s sky for astronomical observations,” the town hall notes. “Due to its marked slope, part or our territory is above the typical ‘sea of clouds,’ which acts as a natural barrier for the light pollution of nearby towns. Tenerife is located near the terrestrial Equator; therefore it offers visibility over the whole northern celestial hemisphere and part of the southern one, practically all year round.” This is also the result of a pioneering law in the Islands that regulates outdoor illumination, radio-electric power, possible contaminating industries and local air traffic. But that’s not all. There are two other things that make La Orotava unique. One of them is the winemaking tradition. Since the 15th century this town has been paying tribute to wine, producing two of them with their own denomination of origin: Malvasía and Canary Sack. Both can be sampled at almost any establishment, along with the typical Canary Islands food. The other local charm is the handicrafts. “The openwork and embroideries, in which the women from La Orotava have achieved great skill and refined taste, are the ones that attract the most attention among our visitors. A work that

That doesn’t matter: the basic thing is not to forget this mix of beauty and tradition in a corner of the island.

Jahrhundert zollt diese Stadt dem Wein ihren Tribut und produziert zwei Arten mit Ursprungsbezeichnungen: Malvasier und Canary Sack. Beide können in nahezu jedem Lokal in Begleitung typisch kanarischer Gerichte verkostet werden. Zum anderen ist da noch der ultimative Charme der Handwerkskunst. „Die feinen Laubsägearbeiten und Stickereien erregen bei Besuchern die größte Aufmerksamkeit und sind ein Beweis für großartige Fingerfertigkeit und Raffinesse. Dieses Handwerk diente ursprünglich der Unterhaltung unter Frauen und entwickelte sich zu einer Kunst, die ursprünglichen Methoden und Doktrinen folgt“, teilen uns die Verantwortlichen des Fremdenverkehrsamtes mit. DE TAPAS POR SEVILLA Desde que a alguien se le ocurrió colocar un trozo de queso o jamón para tapar la bebida, la tapa (de ahí su nombre) se ha convertido en una seña de identidad de la gastronomía andaluza y de Sevilla en particular. Tanto es así que en 2018 la Academia Iberoamericana de Gastronomía la nombró Capital de la Cultura de la Tapa. Salir de tapas es una forma económica y deliciosa de comer y visitar la ciudad, la mejor manera de entender una forma de vida como la sevillana. Pequeños bocados, como un menú degustación por etapas, que permiten saborear la gastronomía hispalense. El tapeo se disfruta de pie. Las barras de los bares y tabernas que lo ofrecen a sus clientes son tan peculiares y diferentes como las tapas que se sirven. Entre las más tradicionales destacan el cazón adobado, la pringá (la carne del puchero o cocido triturada y untada en pan), las espinacas con garbanzos, las gambas, los chipirones a la plancha, el pescaíto frito, el rabo de toro… Todo un abanico de sabores que merecen ser probados. Ever since someone had the bright idea of placing a piece of cheese or ham on top of a glass of wine or beer –to tapar, or close it, in Spanish– the tapa has become a characteristic of Andalusian cuisine, and of Seville in particular. So much so that in 2018 the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy named the city Capital of Tapa Culture. Going out for tapas is a cheap and delicious way of eating and visiting the city –and of understanding its way of life. Small mouthfuls –a kind of sampler menu in stages– to get to know the local cuisine. Tapas are best enjoyed while standing. The bars and taverns that offer them are as varied as the tapas they serve. Among the more traditional are cazón adobado (marinated dogfish that’s fried in breadcrumbs), pringá (meat from a stew is shredded and spread on bread), spinach with chickpeas, prawns, grilled squid, fried fish, bull’s tail… A whole range of flavours that must be sampled. There are many places, from traditional taverns to establishments with gourmet cooking. But if you’re strolling through the historic centre of Seville, here are some recommendations: Very close to the H10 Corregidor is the Eslava (Calle Eslava, 3).

Su risotto de rabo de toro de lidia con gurumelos (un tipo de hongo) recibió en 2013 el premio a la mejor tapa en las Jornadas Gastronómicas del Toro de Lidia. Dispone de una agradable terraza que da a la tranquila Plaza del Pan y cuenta con una sucursal unas calles más abajo, La Cava del Europa (Hernando Colón, 12), igual de delicioso pero enfocado a un público más sibarita. Si seguimos el paseo llegaremos a la Bodeguita Romero (Harinas, 10), en el antiguo barrio del Arenal, a escasos metros de la Catedral de Sevilla. Chipirones, jamón, tapas de carne y pescado… Imprescindible probar sus piripis (un montadito de queso, bacon, lomo de cerdo, tomate natural y mayonesa) o sus montaditos de pringá. Bodeguita Casablanca (Adolfo Rodríguez Jurado, 12), frente al Archivo de Indias, presume en su web de haber sido el primero en instaurar la costumbre de tapear en la barra, pero conserva un salón muy acogedor con mesas para quienes prefieren comer tranquilos. Su punto fuerte son los guisos. Y no tengas prisa, su cocina cierra tarde. Junto a los Jardines de Murillo, pegado al Barrio de Santa Cruz, Modesto (Cano y Cueto, 2) es de esos locales de comida andaluza que hay que visitar. Pescaíto frito, gambas al ajillo, pimientos de Padrón, salmorejo… son solo algunos ejemplos de la variedad de sus tapas. The Bar Europa (Siete Revueltas, 35 – Plaza del Pan), behind the church of El Salvador and very close to the recently-inaugurated H10 Casa de la Plata, has more elaborate tapas, with a gourmet touch. It's one of the most traditional places in the city (it opened in 1925) and its tapas have received various prizes. In 2013 its risotto of bull’s tail with gurumelos (a kind of mushroom) won the prize for the best tapa in the Brave Bull Gastronomy Week. It has a pleasant terrace that faces on to the quiet Plaza del Pan and there’s a branch a few streets away, La Cava del Europa (Hernando Colón, 12), with equally delicious offerings aimed at a more hedonist public. Continuing our stroll, we reach the Bodeguita Romero (Harinas, 10), in the old Arenal neighbourhood and just a few steps from the Cathedral. Kleine gebratene Fische, Garnelen an Knoblauch, Paprika á la Padrón, Salmorejo – die typische kalte Suppe – sind nur einige Beispiele für die Vielfalt hiesiger Tapasgerichte. Die große Terrasse ist das ganze Jahr über geöffnet und zieht Einheimische und Besucher gleichermaßen an. Und wer das Stadtzentrum verlassen und in das beliebte Viertel Triana gehen möchte, sollte nicht verpassen, das Sol y Sombra (Castilla, 151) zu besuchen. The Restaurante Magallanes, which offers a complete buffet breakfast with fresh products, is located in the lovely Sevillian patio that is the building’s most attractive element. It is a bright, quiet place with a central pond and adorned with tiles and surrounded by vegetation. Next to it is the Salón Colón, a meeting room with natural lighting and room for 50 people. We don’t know just what the Sevillian patio recalled by Machado was like, but it almost certainly resembled the one at the H10 Casa de la Plata.

Cuando lo encuentra, sin prisa pero sin pausa, cava con sus aletas un enorme hoyo de su tamaño en el arenal. Una vez lo tiene listo, comienza a poner los huevos, alrededor de un centenar. Luego cubre de arena el nido, lo camufla, tratando de ocultarlo de depredadores como los cangrejos, y vuelve al mar. Entre dos y tres meses, durará la incubación de los huevos. Se abrirán y unas tortuguitas de cinco centímetros saldrán y caminarán lentamente hacia el mar. Cada año, este ritual lo repiten cientos de tortugas marinas de seis especies diferentes en playas de Quintana Roo. Entre mayo y septiembre, estos reptiles con concha acuden a sus arenas blancas con una sola intención: descansar un rato y poder desovar –es decir, poner sus huevos– con total tranquilidad. Actualmente consideradas especies en peligro de extinción, el Programa Protección de Tortugas Marinas en el Litoral Central de Quintana Roo se encarga de protegerlas y concienciar a la comunidad sobre su importancia. Para poder presenciar el desove, las mejores playas en Quintana Roo son Akumal, Tulum y las de Puerto Morelos. De esta población, sus principales arenales de anidación son Punta Petempich, Punta Caracol y Punta Brava. Este proceso dura cerca de una hora. En las playas donde lo hacen lo habitual es crear corrales. Allí los voluntarios del programa colocarán los huevos para protegerlos tanto de los depredadores animales como de los saqueadores humanos. THE RITUAL OF THE SEA TURTLES The sea turtle leaves the water and creeps across the sand, looking for the right place. When she finds it, she slowly uses her fins to dig a large hole of about her own size in the sand. Once it is ready, she begins to lay her eggs, around 100. Then she covers the nest with sand, trying to hide it from predators such as crabs, and returns to the sea. The eggs will incubate for between two and three months. When they open, little turtles some five centimetres in length will emerge and then move slowly to the water. Each year this ritual is repeated on the beaches of Quintana Roo state with hundreds of sea turtles of six different species. Between May and September, these shelled reptiles come to the white beaches with a single objective: to rest for a while and then lay their eggs in peace. At present they are considered in danger of extinction, and so the Sea Turtle Protection

El Ocean Coral & Turquesa, de H10 Hotels, está ubicado en el Parque Nacional Marino de Puerto Morelos y participa activamente en un programa de apadrinamiento de cría de tortugas marinas. Prepara cuidadosamente las playas del hotel para dar la bienvenida a esta especie marina y dispone de una zona con capacidad para 200 nidos y 30 nidos portátiles, además de personal capacitado para la orientación medioambiental de los clientes. En realidad, las normas son más o menos lógicas. Las especies que con más frecuencia arriban a este municipio son la tortuga caguama, tortuga verde y la tortuga carey. Protegerlas es necesario, además de por la especie en sí, por su importancia vital para el equilibrio ecológico de los ecosistemas: promueven el crecimiento de los pastos marinos, estabilizan las playas, forman parte de la cadena alimenticia de otras especies y son reguladoras de grandes poblaciones de organismos como medusas y peces, entre otros.

and Conservation Program of the Central Coast of Quintana Roo is in charge of protecting them and making people aware of their importance. The best beaches in Quintana Roo to see this egg-laying are Akumal, Tulum and the ones at Puerto Morelos. In this latter town, the best places are Punta Petempich, Punta Caracol and Punta Brava. The process lasts about an hour. On the beaches where it is carried out, the custom is to construct corrals. There the volunteers in the programme will help place the eggs to protect them from both animal predators and human looters. When the three-month incubation period is over, the volunteers will liberate the turtles during the night so as to prevent winged predators from eating the babies. It carefully prepares the hotel’s beaches to welcome them and has an area with room for 200 nests and 30 portable nests, in addition to providing staff members to instruct clients about environmental matters. These norms are fairly logical: don’t get close to the nests, don’t touch the turtles, don’t make fires in these areas, don’t illuminate the beach or use flashes on cameras. In addition, do not discard plastic or trash or bring dogs, which might try to dig into the nests in the sand. In 2017, the Final Report of the Programme to Conserve and Manage Sea Turtles in Puerto Morelos listed more than 2,000 nests and said that more than 200,000 newborn turtles had reached the sea. Esto es lo que se conoce como Responsabilidad Social Corporativa, y para H10 Hotels es algo muy importante en su política de empresa, por lo que lleva años colaborando con diversas fundaciones, hospitales y entidades sin ánimo de lucro. Una de las entidades con las que colabora es la Fundació Albert, que atiende a niños y familias en riesgo de exclusión social, realizando actividades de refuerzo escolar, lúdicas y casales de verano (una especie de campamento urbano). ablo Ruiz Picasso (su nombre de pila era mucho más largo, pero fue así como llegó a ser mundialmente conocido) tuvo que marcharse de Málaga cuando era niño. La difícil situación económica por la que atravesaba su familia fue la causa por la que con apenas 10 años dejó su localidad natal para establecerse en La Coruña. Sin embargo, su primera década de vida transcurrida en territorio malacitano dejó huella en el futuro artista. Pese a que a lo largo de su vida se deslizaron ciertas insinuaciones sobre el desapego de Picasso con la ciudad que le vio nacer, el genial pintor dejó sobradas muestras de su malagueñismo. Para José Lebrero Stals, director artístico del Museo Picasso Málaga, uno de los principales atractivos culturales de la Costa del Sol, «es en sus poemas iniciales donde mejor podemos comprobar que, a pesar del paso del tiempo y de todos los pesares propios del vivir, nunca dejó de sentirse español y siempre mantuvo un hilo de afecto con la memoria de su lugar de nacimiento», Y, como muestra, recupera uno escrito en 1936: “Yo he nacido de un padre blanco y de un pequeño vaso de agua de vida andaluza, yo he nacido de una madre hija de una hija de quince años nacida en Málaga en los Percheles el hermoso toro que me engendra la frente coronada de jazmines…” Aunque quizás la muestra más palpable de ese vínculo que siempre le unió a su tierra sea el museo de cuya dirección artística se encarga el propio Lebrero Stals. «(El Museo Picasso Málaga) responde al deseo de Pablo Picasso de que su obra estuviera presente en la ciudad en la que

Pablo Ruiz Picasso (his given name was much longer, but that’s how he became world famous) had to leave Málaga when he was a child. Because of his family’s difficult economic situation, he was just 10 years old when they went to live in La Coruña, in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. Nevertheless, his first decade in Málaga had a strong influence on the future artist. While over the course of his life there would be murmurings that he was no longer connected to his birthplace, the brilliant painter left much evidence of its influence. For José Lebrero Stals, artistic director of the Picasso Museum in Málaga, which is one of the principal tourist attractions on the Costa del Sol, “it’s in his early poems where we can best appreciate that, in spite of the time gone by and all the life he lived, he never ceased to feel he was Spanish and always had an affectionate connection with the place where he had been born.” As evidence, something he wrote in 1936: “I was born of a white father and a small glass of Andalusian eau de vie, I was born to a mother, the daughter of a fifteen-year-old girl born in the Perchel district of Málaga, the handsome bull who sired me with his forehead crowned with jasmine…” Although perhaps the strongest sign of his link to Málaga is the museum of which Lebrero Stals is the artisitic director. “The Museo Picasso Málaga meets Pablo Picasso’s wish that his work always be present in the city where he was born on 25 October 1881,” the institution proclaims. It was inaugurated in 2003, but the idea of opening a museum to

Fue en 1953 cuando tuvieron lugar los contactos entre el propio Pablo Picasso y Juan Temboury Álvarez, el entonces delegado provincial de Bellas Artes de Málaga, para poner en marcha la iniciativa. Aunque las negociaciones no llegaron a buen puerto. Tuvieron que pasar más de 40 años de aquello y casi 20 desde la muerte del pintor hasta que Christine Ruiz-Picasso, viuda de Paul Ruiz-Picasso, hijo mayor del artista, retomase la idea. Fue a raíz de sendas exposiciones sobre el artista, en 1992 y 1994, respectivamente. La extraordinaria acogida del público malagueño, que por primera vez podía contemplar algunas de las obras más emblemáticas de su paisano en su ciudad, fue determinante para que, por fin, se llevase a cabo el proyecto. El 27 de octubre de 2003 se inauguraba el museo con una colección de 233 obras de Pablo Picasso y con el Palacio de Buenavista como sede. Cuatro años más tarde, la colección se completaría con una selección de 166 procedentes de los fondos de la Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (nieto del artista) para el Arte (FABA). El museo se concibe como un recorrido por la obra de Picasso a lo largo de sus años de creación, mostrando su versatilidad, su vocación por investigar y explorar las posibilidades expresivas de cualquier soporte y, por supuesto, su genialidad. Las exposiciones temporales, por su parte, son la vía con la que el museo aprovecha para conectar la obra de Picasso con la de otros pintores. Una manera de enriquecer, aún más si cabe, el espléndido legado del malagueño, estableciendo un diálogo entre su obra y la de otros artistas.

In 1953 there were contacts between Picasso himself and Juan Temboury Álvarez, then the provincial delegate for Fine Arts in Málaga, to move the project forward, although negotiations didn’t work out. It would be another 40 years, and almost 20 after the death of Picasso, until Christine Ruiz-Picasso –widow of Paul Ruiz-Picasso, the oldest child of the painter– would take up the idea again. It was after exhibits in Málaga about the artist in 1992 and 1994. The extraordinary popularity of these shows among the Málaga public, which for the first time had the chance to see some of his most emblematic works, was fundamental in being able to finish the project. The museum was opened on 27th October 2003, in the Palacio de Buenavista, with a collection of 233 works by Picasso. Four years later the collection would be augmented with 166 works from the Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation for Art, or FABA. Bernard is the grandson of Picasso. The museum is conceived as a tour through the work of Picasso over the years, showing his versatility, his interest in researching and exploring the expressive possibilities of every genre, and of course his brilliance. In addition, temporary exhibits are the way the museum connects Picasso’s work with that of other artists. It’s a way of enriching even more, if possible, the splendid legacy of Picasso and of establishing a dialogue between his work and that of these painters.

Fue en el primer piso del número 36 de la plaza de la Merced de la capital malagueña (el que hoy es el número 15), donde aquel 25 de octubre de 1881 nació Picasso. Aquella casa es hoy sede de su Museo Casa Natal que gestiona la Fundación Picasso. Cuenta la escritora Fina García Naranjo que la madre del genial pintor, María Picasso López, solía decir que las primeras palabras de Pablo fueron «piz, piz». Era su forma de pedir un lápiz cuando todavía no sabía hablar. Una precocidad nada extraña teniendo en cuenta que el padre de la criatura, José Ruiz Blasco, era pintor y profesor de dibujo en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo, en Málaga. Lo que no era tan normal era la brillantez de aquel niño, que con solo 14 años y en un día fue capaz de superar el examen de ingreso en la Escuela de la Lonja, en Barcelona. Pero Picasso no se conformaba con ser considerado un niño prodigio; su sitio estaba entre los más grandes de la historia del arte y con el paso de los años logró su puesto. Hoy Málaga, su ciudad natal, acoge buena parte de las obras con las que Picasso cambió para siempre el curso del arte moderno.

Picasso was born in Málaga on 25 October 1881 on the first floor of the building at 36 Plaza de la Merced (today number 15). It now houses the Birthplace Museum that is managed by the Picasso Foundation. The writer Fina García Naranjo relates that Picasso’s mother, María Picasso López, used to say that Pablo’s first words were “piz, piz.” It was his way of asking for a pencil (lápiz) before he knew how to talk. But not surprising in light of the fact that his father, José Ruiz Blasco, was a painter and professor of drawing at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo, in Málaga. What was not so normal was the brilliance of that child, who when he was only 14 and in a single day was able to pass the entrance examination to the Escuela de la Lonja, an art and design school in Barcelona. But Picasso wasn’t content to be considered a child prodigy; his rightful place was among the greats in the history of art, and in time he would achieve this. Today Málaga, his birthplace, has a good part of the works with which Picasso changed forever the course of modern art.

DIE KINDHEIT EINES GENIES Picasso kam am 25. Oktober 1881 in Málaga im ersten Stock des Gebäudes an der Plaza de la Merced Nummer 36 (heute Nummer 15) zur Welt. Heute beherbergt es das Museum seines Geburtshauses, das von der Picasso-Stiftung verwaltet wird. Die Schriftstellerin Fina García Naranjo erzählt, dass Picassos Mutter, María Picasso López, stets zu sagen pflegte, dass Pablos erste Worte „piz, piz“ gewesen seien. Cuentan que en aquella pequeña calle vivía una familia en la que todos sus miembros eran invidentes. Muchos cordobeses aludían a esta circunstancia cuando querían referirse al lugar. Fue así como empezó a conocerse como el Callejón de los Ciegos. Pero esta es solo una de las decenas de callejuelas que trufaban el entramado urbano de Córdoba en los tiempos del Al-Ándalus. Callejas-barrera, callejones sin salida, adarves… El laberíntico callejero medieval cordobés ofrece aún hoy una alternativa a las rutas turísticas más populares para conocer la ciudad y hacerse una idea de cómo era la Qurṭuba regida por los omeyas. La fisionomía de la mayor parte de estas calles continúa tal cual y muchas han conservado también su nombre originario. Aunque en algunos casos se desconoce la anécdota por la que fueron así denominadas. Ocurre, por ejemplo, con la calleja de La Malpensada. ¿Se trataba de una vecina que siempre se ponía en lo peor? Es posible, aunque no existe ningún documento que así lo atestigüe. Tampoco ninguna leyenda que haya pasado oralmente de generación en generación en el vecindario. Otras, en cambio, han conseguido conservar en la memoria de los cordobeses la historia que les dio nombre. Es el caso de la Calleja de los Arquillos en la que, dicen, tuvo lugar el episodio más trágico de la conocida como leyenda de los Siete Infantes. Se dice que en ese mismo lugar se levantaba el alcázar de Almanzor en el siglo X. Allí fue hecho prisionero Gonzalo Gustioz, señor de Salas, y allí también recibió una macabra entrega: las cabezas de sus hijos, decapitados en Soria tras caer en una emboscada urdida por su propio tío. THROUGH THE ALLEYWAYS OF CÓRDOBA The story goes that there was a small street that was home to a family all of whose members were blind. Many residents of Córdoba mentioned that when referring to the place. And that’s how it came to be known as the Callejón de los Ciegos, or Alleyway of the Blind. But it’s only one of the dozens of streets that made up urban Córdoba in the times of Al-Andalus. Narrow winding streets, cul-desacs, passageways with barriers… Labyrinthine, medieval Córdoba is still an alternative to the most popular tourist routes, a way to get to discover the city and get to know the Qurṭuba then governed by the Umayyads. Most of these streets are just as they were then, and some even preserve their original names, although in some cases the stories behind those names are unknown. For example, the Street called La Malpensada (“The Evil-Minded Woman”). Was there really someone who always thought the worst of things? It’s possible, although there is no documentation to prove it, or any local oral history that’s been passed from one generation to the next. By contrast, the reasons for naming some of their streets have survived in the minds of the local people. That’s the case with the Calleja de los Arquillos, the scene, it’s said, of

La de los Buenos Vinos, por su parte, debe su nombre a uno de los vecinos que la habitaron. Aquel, aunque no lo parezca, era su apellido y no su apodo, como podríamos pensar. En algunos casos, las callejas han visto ‘improvisar’ un nombre para referirse a ellas. La de Roelas, por ejemplo, no disponía de nombre alguno en los padrones más antiguos. Cuando se decidió bautizarla, se recurrió al apellido del Padre Roelas, un religioso que vivió cerca de la zona allá por el siglo XVI. En total son más de un centenar las callejuelas, con o sin leyendas adheridas, que a día de hoy pueden encontrarse en el callejero cordobés. Se distribuyen a lo largo y ancho de

a tragic episode of what’s come to be known as the legend of the Siete Infantes. It’s said that in this place during the 10th century there used to be the Almanzor fortress. Gonzalo Gustioz, señor de Salas, was being held there when he received the heads of his seven sons, decapitated in Soria in an ambush arranged by their own uncle. Each of the heads was exhibited on an arch along that street. Luckily, the names of other alleways were based on less tragic events. Calle Imprenta (printing press) is so designated because at one time it was home to a business of this kind. The one called Buenos Vinos, for its part, owes its name to the fact that a man with that curious last name – contrary to what you might think, it was not a nickname– lived there. In some cases, these narrow streets have received improvised names. The one called Roelas, for example, had no name at all from the earliest times. When it was finally baptised, somebody chose the last name of Padre Roelas, a priest who lived in the area in the 16th century. Today there are more than a hundred such narrow streets and

Die Calle Imprenta wurde so benannt, weil sie einst eine Druckerei beherbergte. Und die Straße namens Buenos Vinos verdankt ihren Namen einem der Nachbarn, die dort lebten. Dies war jedoch sein Nachname und nicht etwa sein Spitzname, wie man vielleicht annehmen könnte. Manchmal erhielten die Gassen eine improvisierte Bezeichnung, wenn man sich auf sie bezog. Die Gasse Roelas hatte beispielsweise in den frühesten Anfängen überhaupt keinen Namen. Als sie schließlich getauft wurde, erhielt sie den Nachnamen von Pater Roelas, einem Priester, der im 16. Durante cuatro días, el evento propone diversas rutas por estas callejas para turistas, pero también para los propios cordobeses que desconocen las historias y leyendas que esconden las angostas callejuelas de su ciudad.

That was the basis for establishing two years ago the Festival de las Callejuelas. Over the course of four days, it presents different walking routes through these streets for tourists but also for the natives themselves who might be ignorant of the stories and legends hidden in their city’s narrow alleyways.

The H10 Palacio Colomera has opened in the popular Plaza de las Tendillas, in the centre of Córdoba and very close to the city’s cultural, artistic and tourism attractions. It’s a hotel full of history, set in the old Casa Colomera, a majestic palace built in 1928 for the count and countess of that name. The new hotel inside it has maintained the facade, the high ceilings and the two classic towers. Interior design was done by Tarruella Trenchs studio. Su popularidad es tal (se tiene como la aplicación más descargada en soportes móviles) que ha dado el salto a varios formatos desde su embrión digital: los personajes, esos pájaros enfadados a los que alude su nombre, se han convertido en protagonistas de una película, en muñecos de goma o en motivo de disfraz. En la isla de Gran Canaria, además, han inspirado un parque de atracciones que evoca sus escenarios e instalaciones. Angry Birds Activity Park es un recinto de 5.000 metros cuadrados situado al sur de Gran Canaria, en la localidad de Puerto Rico, a apenas 15 minutos en coche desde el H10 Playa Meloneras Palace. Basado en Chuck, Bomb, Red o Bubble –algunas de esas aves enojadas–, este lugar propone un plan familiar donde se combine el amor por este juego con ejercicios relacionados. Por otro, las temperaturas primaverales durante los 12 meses del año. “Antes había algunos toboganes, pero preferimos partir de cero e iniciar todo el montaje”, recuerda la directora, que apunta cómo acude una mayoría de público extranjero, pero también colegios o vecinos, y calcula una afluencia de unas 200 personas al día: “El año pasado vinieron unos 50.000 visitantes”. Pasan el día entre toboganes, la pista de parkour o una red de tirolinas. “Una vez se compra la entrada, se puede salir las veces que se quiera”, comenta Jensen. Eso da posibilidad de volver al hotel para descansar o comer y repetir en las atracciones tantas veces como se desee. “Lo hemos pensado para los que ya tengan la comida incluida en sus vacaciones, aunque tenemos un bar con menú y varias opciones saludables”, aclara. También existe un cine 10D, con un ticket aparte, que programa sesiones cada dos horas. “Celebramos muchos cumpleaños”, dice Sally Jensen, “y lo que queremos es que sea para toda la familia”. then. “There were already parks with Angry Birds sections, but none of them were exclusively dedicated to the concept,” adds Jensen, who is British, although she’s been working in the Canaries for 21 years. The promoters had been considering the idea for some time. Bringing the Angry Birds universe to an amusing setting would give its many followers something extra special. The Gran Canaria location also had two advantages: a continual flow of people from all over the world, and spring-like temperatures all year long. “Before, there were some slides, but we decided to start from scratch when constructing things,” the director recalls. She notes that most of the public is from outside Spain but that there are also many local people and kids from nearby schools. She calculates that there are some 200 visitors each day. “Last year there were around 50,000.” They spend the day on the slides, the Parkour Track, or a series of zip-lines. “Once you buy a ticket you can go in and out as often as you like,” says Jensen. That makes it possible to go back to your hotel to rest or to eat lunch and still come back for the rides as many times as you want. “We did it that way because some people have lunch included in their holidays, although we also have a bar with a daily menu and several healthy options,” she adds. There is also a 10D cinema, needing a separate ticket, with sessions every two hours. “There are lots of birthday parties held here,” says Sally Jensen, “and we want things to be for the whole family.” When setting up the park, the idea was not for the parents to wait around while their kids had fun, but for them to take part too. “We only close for a week or so in September, at the end of the summer season, for maintenance chores and to prepare the monitors,” the director adds, while reflecting on the next innovation. “We have a number of themed weeks,” she says, “and each day we’re dreaming up

Un siglo más tarde los caramelos de violeta se han convertido en un dulce símbolo de Madrid, un capricho moderno que sedujo a reyes y artistas, convirtiéndose en tradición en tiempo récord. «Son muy típicos de aquí, por eso hemos decidido añadir un guiño a estos caramelos en forma de tarta de queso, en el bavaroise de violetas», comenta Roberto Gafo Ramos. Gafo Ramos es el chef ejecutivo del H10 Puerta de Alcalá y sabe mucho sobre conjugar innovación y tradición. En su cocina trabajan con recetas de mercado y con técnicas innovadoras. Innovation is sometimes hard to accept, but it can be positive. A century later, those violet candies have become a sweet symbol of Madrid, a modern whim that has seduced kings and artists and that has become a tradition in record time. “They’re very typical of Madrid, and that’s why we’ve decided to transform some of these candies into a cheesecake, a violet bavaroise,” says Roberto Gafo Ramos. Gafo Ramos is the executive chef of the H10 Puerta de Alcalá and knows a lot about combining innovation and tradition. His kitchen works with market-fresh recipes and innovative techniques. They offer everything from thick stews to international snacks. “From merluza a la vasca (Basque-style hake) to some chiles, chipotles or

Madrid es un foco de turismo todo el año, pero es en Navidad cuando sus calles se engalanan y el reloj de la Puerta del Sol, epicentro del fin de año español, centra todas las miradas. Teniendo una posición inmejorable para disfrutar del espectáculo, en el H10 Puerta de Alcalá preparan la

This is what happened with the H10 Puerta de Alcalá, as seen in the intermittent lines of people in summer who want to go up to the El Cielo de Alcalá Terrace Rooftop Bar. “Just look at the views,” says Gafo Ramos, pointing to the impressive Madrid skyline behind him. In winter this terrace closes but the visual spectacle moves to the interior restaurant, from which can be seen the Christmas lights in the city centre. Madrid attracts tourists throughout the year, but it’s at Christmas when its streets are decorated and the clock in the Puerta del Sol becomes the city’s epicentre for Spain’s New Year’s Eve celebration. With its perfect position

Im Winter ist die Terrasse geschlossen, doch das visuelle Spektakel wird ins Innere des Restaurants verlagert, von wo aus die Weihnachtsbeleuchtung im Stadtzentrum zu sehen ist. Madrid zieht das ganze Jahr über Touristen an, doch ganz besonders an Weihnachten, wenn die Straßen geschmückt sind, und zum Jahreswechsel, wenn die Uhr an der Puerta del Sol zum Epizentrum der Hauptstadt wird. Dieser Platz ist zum Beobachten dieses Fests unschlagbar und deshalb bereitet sich das H10 Puerta de Alcalá schon Monate im Voraus darauf vor, auch in der Küche. „Für die Silvesternacht bereiten wir ein ganz besonderes Gericht

También tienen otros clásicos como el atún rojo marinado, el mollete de calamares o el ya mencionado bavaroise de violetas. Pero Gafo Ramos avisa que los clásicos no duran mucho y en su cocina están siempre innovando, creando nuevos platos. So much so that the coming of the new year is celebrated with fireworks, and the traditional 12 grapes are consumed on the terrace after dinner. This doesn’t mean that daily dishes are ignored. “I’d say that our star offering is the smoked octopus with mashed potatoes,” adds Gafo Ramos. And there are other classics like marinated red tuna, squid flatbread, or that bavaroise of violets. But Gafo Ramos says that these classics are continually being augmented through innovation and the creation of new dishes: a blend of innovation and tradition to create international cuisine with typical Madrid touches.

ZUBEREITUNG

Pelamos el carabinero y reservamos las carcasas; lo empapelamos en papel de horno y le damos unos golpes para hacerlo fino. Exprimimos el zumo de las limas y lo mezclamos con cayena picada, y maridamos el carabinero en esta mezcla. Una vez maridado, vertemos encima las huevas de erizo y las huevas de salmón para rebajar la fuerza de las primeras. Aparte, preparamos una crema de carabinero con las carcasas machacadas y la esparcimos sobre el plato con ayuda de una manga pastelera. Añadimos unos brotes frescos de remolacha y un poco de eneldo. Para rematar, calentamos en aceite de oliva unos brotes de eneldo, lo dejamos infusionar y vertemos el resultado sobre el plato.

Peel the king red prawns and set aside the shells: we wrap them in baking paper and crush them. Squeeze the lime juice and mix it with the cayenne pepper, then blend the prawns with this mixture. Once marinated, place on top the sea urchin and salmon roe to lessen the strength of the former. Apart, we prepare a prawn cream with the crushed shells and sprinkle it over the plate with the help of a pastry bag. We add some fresh beet sprouts and a little dill. To finish, we heat some dill sprouts in olive oil, let them set and then place them on top of the dish.

Die Garnelen schälen und die Schalen beiseitelegen: In Backpapier wickeln und klopfen, damit sie fein werden. Dann Limettensaft auspressen und mit dem Cayennepfeffer vermengen. Danach die Garnelen mit dieser Mischung bestreichen. Anschließend den Seeigel- und Lachsrogen darauf geben, um die Schärfe zu nehmen. Als Nächstes eine Creme aus den zerkleinerten Schalen herstellen und diese mithilfe eines Spritzbeutels auf dem Teller verteilen. Etwas frische Rübensprossen und Dill hinzufügen. Zum Schluss ein paar Dillspitzen in Olivenöl erhitzen, durchziehen lassen und auf den Teller geben.
