Another Sad Overdose On New Year’s Day Nick Gordon—the ex-boyfriend of Bobbi Kristina Brown, the late daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown—was found unresponsive from a heroin overdose in an Orlando hotel room. Gordon’s brother Jack Walker Jr. confirmed Gordon had died in a statement: “We are devastated by the loss of my beautiful brother . . .  Nick’s battle in life was not an easy one.” His death, at age 30, is the latest in a long saga of addiction and tragedy surrounding the Houston family. In 2015 Gordon found Bobbi Kristina unconscious in a bathtub with drugs in her system—a scene eerily similar to her mother’s 2012 death, when she was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton. Bobbi Kristina died at 22 after months in a coma. Her family sued Gordon for wrongful death,

accusing him of battering her and giving her drugs. He was ordered to pay $36 million. Still, Gordon’s brother told People, “not a day went by that he didn’t get emotional about” Bobbi Kristina. “He would always say to me, ‘I wish things had been different. She shouldn’t have gone the way she did.’ ”

Gordon was raised by Houston (inset) like a son before his relationship with Bobbi Kristina (right, in 2012) turned romantic.

A kitten finds a home with a man biking around the world BOSNIA

When Dean Nicholson left his home in Dunbar, Scotland, in September 2018 to bike around the world, he planned to make it a solo trip. That changed in December 2018, when he was riding through Bosnia and heard a small meow—and turned to see a tiny kitten following him. Nicholson, 31, named her Nala, and before long the two were inseparable, sharing their travels with their 735,000 Instagram followers. “Who knows where we’d both be just now if our paths hadn’t crossed?” Nicholson wrote on their one-year anniversary, “but I’m unbelievably grateful they did.”

Actor-singer Donnie Wahlberg made the New Year an especially happy one for IHOP server Bethany Provencher, 37, when he left her a $2,020 tip on a $78.45 bill on Jan 1. “I just started crying,” says Provencher, who had waited on the star’s party, which included Wahlberg’s wife, Jenny McCarthy, her son Evan, 17, and a few friends. The single mom, a waitress for 25 years, started working at the IHOP two months ago and had recently moved into a new apartment with her young son. “Now I can buy furniture and put some money in the bank and make sure my son is good,” says Provencher. “It’s the greatest thing to ever happen in my life.”

Why I Care PERSONAL

My congresswoman Karen Bass told me STORIES ABOUT about the National Foster Youth Institute and a GIVING BACK foster-youth crisis across the country: Kids are kicked out of their foster homes at age 18, which is crazy to me as a 20-year-old. I spoke with foster youths who told me their stories and how much a family environment means to them. It was eye-opening to hear about their experiences—going through the system, being passed from home to home, growing up being abused. I really don’t think I could navigate the world without the guidance of a parent. NFYI links foster youths up with others who have gone through the same situation and aims to empower them to speak to their congresspeople. We can all support initiatives like subsidized housing and college programs. As human beings we are all connected, and you just want to help in any way you can. I haven’t been through any of the experiences that these warriors have gone through, but I know we can uplift their voices. —R e p o r t e d b y K A R E N M I Z O G U C H I For more information, go to nfyi.org January 20, 2020

POP TV

A high-water mark for Catherine O’Hara COMEDY In her long career Catherine O’Hara has played nice, normal women, as we’re reminded every Christmas by Home Alone repeats. But she has a particular genius for playing not-very-talented, not-very-sane actresses. These roles stretch all the way back to her SCTV character Lola Heatherton, a musical-variety star who in her most delirious moments would scream, “I love you! I want to bear your children!” But Schitt’s Creek, the Pop TV hit about a wealthy family stripped of their money and forced to relocate to a small town, has afforded O’Hara her most sustained crazy-actress vehicle: She’s Moira Rose, a faded star whose credits include a soap opera called Sunrise Bay and a yet-to-be-released horror film, The Crows

Have Eyes III: The Crowening. Moira totters around in awful wigs—she gives them names—and speaks in a halting, singsong voice that stretches words into babytalk nonsense. (“Friends” becomes “freh-ahnds.”) At the start of the show’s sixth and final season, Moira has suffered a breakdown and secluded herself in a closet. Forced out into the open by smoke from an electrical fire, she delivers the astoundingly strange line: “How mercurial is life. We all imagine being carried from the ashes by the goddess Artemus, and here I get a balatron from Barnum & Bailey.” No one in this silly, endearing show tries to compete with O’Hara, although Dan Levy, as Moira’s histrionic son, is also a delight. IF YOU PURCHASED AN ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VS OR GL502VSK LAPTOP BETWEEN MAY 4, 2014, AND NOVEMBER 19, 2019, A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT MAY AFFECT YOUR RIGHTS. A proposed class action settlement has been reached in a case entitled Carlotti, et al. v. ASUS Computer International, et al., No. 4:18-cv-03369, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. In the lawsuit, Plaintiff alleges that the ASUS Rog Strix GL502VS and GL502VSK laptops (the “Laptops”) were deceptively marketed as powerful, portable machines ideal for gaming and video editing with independent cooling systems to give the Laptops “stability required for intense gaming sessions.” Plaintiff alleges that the Laptops are not suitable for their ordinary and advertised purpose because the Laptops’ batteries drain even when the Laptops are connected to electrical outlets (the “Power Defect”). Plaintiff also alleges that the Laptops’ cooling systems are not independent because they use one set of heatsinks to dissipate heat from both the graphics processing unit and computational processing unit, so the Laptops overheat, leading to physical discomfort and/or diminishing the Laptops’ performance and durability (the “Overheating Issue”). ASUS Computer International and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. are the defendants (“Defendants”) and deny any wrongdoing. If the Settlement is approved and you are a Class Member, you may be eligible to receive a Cash Payment in the amount of either $110 or $55 or a Credit Certificate in the amount of either $210 or $105 at your option. You are a Class Member if you purchased a new ASUS Rog Strix GL502VS or GL502VSK laptop from Defendants or an authorized ASUS retailer after May 4, 2014 in the United States. Additionally, Defendants have extended the warranty for GL502VS laptops that suffered from the Power Defect. Call Defendants’ technical support at 1-888-678-3688 to receive instructions for obtaining Extended Warranty service. You may receive a Cash Payment or Credit Certificate even if you obtain Extended Warranty service.

TV | Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector

DRAMA Three years after being paralyzed by (literally) falling into a serial killer’s trap, Det. Lincoln Rhyme (Russell Hornsby) is hit by a grim suspicion: The murderer, never caught, may have resurfaced. The premiere episode sets things up with cool understatement. (NBC, Jan. 10, 8 p.m.)

To obtain a Cash Payment, you must submit a valid Claim Form. To obtain a Credit Certificate, you must submit a valid Claim Form unless you complained to Defendants about a Power Defect and/or Overheating Issue prior to March 19, 2019. If your complaint is reflected in Defendants’ records, then you will automatically receive a $210 Credit Certificate (“Automatic Credit Certificate”). If you prefer a Cash Payment, then you must submit a Claim Form. Claim Forms are available at www.ASUSLaptopSettlement.com. Depending on the benefit you request, Defendants may have the right to demand an inspection of your Laptop to confirm that your Claim is valid and you may have to provide proof of purchase. Visit www.ASUSLaptopSettlement.com for more information about the inspection process and conditions.

The Court will hold a Final Approval Hearing on April 30, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. PST, to consider whether to approve the Settlement. The hearing will be held in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, before Magistrate Judge Donna M. Ryu, in the Oakland Courthouse, 1301 Clay Street, Oakland, CA 94612, in courtroom 4 on the 3rd floor, or such other judge assigned by the Court. The Court will decide whether to approve the Settlement and whether to award Attorneys’ Fees and Expenses of up to $787,500 and an Incentive Award of up to $5,000 to Plaintiff. The motion seeking Attorneys’ Fees and Expenses and an Incentive Award will be posted on www.ASUSLaptopSettlement.com after it is filed. You may, but don’t have to, attend the hearing. Cash Payments and Credit Certificates will be issued to the Settlement Class Members only if the Settlement is approved and after any Objections are resolved. Please be patient. For more information, visit www.ASUSLaptopSettlement.com, or contact the Claim Administrator by email at Info@ASUSLaptopSettlement.com or by phone at 1-844-263-6122. You can also obtain additional information by contacting Class Counsel at: Seth A. Safier, Gutride Safier LLP, 100 Pine Street, Suite 1250, San Francisco, CA 94111/Tel: 415-639-9090. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT DEFENDANTS OR THE COURT TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE SETTLEMENT.

John Malkovich roams toward Rome COMEDY-DRAMA Like its predecessor The Young Pope, New Pope is enticingly sumptuous and playfully baffling: It’s hard to know what to make of a convent of nuns who, once lights are out, slip from their cots and perform a disco dance. Pius XIII (Jude Law) has suffered a catastrophic heart attack, reducing him to a ghost who pops up from time to time. Vatican officials angle to replace him with a sorrowful, eccentric English aristocrat (John Malkovich). (He’s friends with Meghan Markle: “I’m adamant—wear the yellow Dior,” he tells her on the phone.) In its peculiar way, the show is much more serious about faith and ambition than Netflix’s amiable film The Two Popes. (HBO, Jan. 13, 9 p.m.)

Jennifer Lopez, scoring one of the year’s biggest movie comebacks, is in the running for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her bold yet sly performance in Hustlers. book of the week

Liz Moore Long Bright River

NOVEL A murderer lurks in the opioid-ridden streets of Philadelphia where Mickey Fitzpatrick works as a beat cop. When her addict sister goes missing, Mickey launches a search that puts herself, her son and her career at risk. This is a police procedural and a thriller par excellence, one in which the city of Philadelphia itself is a character (think Boston and Mystic River). But it’s also a literary tale narrated by a strong woman with a richly drawn personal life—powerful and genre-defying.

A feel-good bestseller Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a surprise hit

When Clementine Hozier gets to know magnetic up-and-comer Winston Churchill in 1908, she’s captivated. Six months later she and the future PM marry. Clementine manages the household, fights for women’s suffrage and advises her “Pug”— helping to shape history. A fascinating fictionalized account of the consummate political wife.

NOVEL A teenage pageant queen has been raped and murdered in the woods of a suburban New England town. She leaves behind a snarky older sister, two pervy male fans, a pedophile math teacher, an alcoholic mom, a secretive dad, a boyfriend with a knife fetish . . . The question isn’t so much whodunit as who didnÕt do it in this darkly funny thriller with a shocker ending.

It started when Mackesy, a British illustrator, began posting his drawings of a boy and a horse on Instagram, along with their searching conversations. (“What is the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” asked the boy. “Help,” said the horse.) The simple profundity struck a chord, a mole and a fox joined in, and Mackesy’s slim volume featuring the questioning quartet has been near the top of U.K. and U.S. bestseller lists since its publication in October. onathan and Drew Scott have always been go-getters. Over the past decade the identical twins have gone from eager entrepreneurs struggling to get by to self-made multimillionaires, all thanks to a little luck and a lot of hard work. Now proudly at the helm of a massive home-improvement empire—which includes their hit HGTV series Property Brothers and its four spinoffs, a global entertainment company, endorsement deals, furniture and decor lines, an app, four books and their new quarterly lifestyle magazine Reveal (which is published by Meredith, People’s parent company)—Jonathan and Drew, 41, are happily welcoming some big changes into their lives. And that means more time spent with the women they love. Jonathan began dating New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, 40, in September. “I stumbled into a relationship that I wasn’t expecting, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever experienced,” he says. “So now I actually want to put effort and time toward that.” For Drew and his wife of nearly two years, Linda Phan, 34, that shift is about expanding their family. “One of the big things for us is taking more time for ourselves,” Drew says. “We want to have kids soon.” The brothers agree that they’ve never been happier. “We’re doing what we love, and we’re in relationships with people we love,” says Jonathan. Adds Drew: “I can’t think of a better path.”

THE WOMEN WHO HAVE THEIR HEARTS After six years of dating, Drew and Linda Phan, now the creative director at Scott Brothers Global, were married in Italy in May 2018. “She connects with people and is very engaging,” says Drew. “I think she draws people in with her personality.” Jonathan went through a painful divorce in 2009 and later ended a three-year relationship with Jacinta Kuznetsov in April 2018. After taking time to focus on himself, he met actress and singer Zooey Deschanel in August. “Maybe the universe was like, ‘Hey, all right, you did it. Here you go,’ and rewarded me with the gift of love.”

THEIR EXPANDING EMPIRE

From product lines to a new podcast, Jonathan and Drew Scott’s many booming businesses have certainly paid off. In 2018 total sales for their Scott Living brand topped half a billion dollars. At Home with Linda & Drew Scott

The couple launched the podcast on Jan. 2. “We’re inviting guests over to chat about the messiness that makes a house a home,” Drew wrote on Instagram.

Did Zooey fit in right away with the Scott family? JONATHAN It’s very, very important for me

that the person I’m in love with also gets the approval of my whole family. Absolutely everybody has clicked with Zooey. She’s a very considerate person, and that’s what I’m looking for. I had said before that the most important thing for me was a sense of humor. But you have to be kind, and she definitely is. DREW Here’s what also makes her a rock star: She sang my dad’s favorite song, “Danny Boy,” to him over FaceTime. She also made Yorkshire pudding, which is my absolute all-time favorite. When did you introduce her to the family? JONATHAN I invited her to J.D. and Annalee’s

wedding on Halloween, and that was a big step, because all of a sudden that was the first time she was meeting all my family. It was amazing. The fun thing too for me is she can go out, and she can work the room and talk to people, introduce herself. It’s a totally different experience for me. Drew, you and Linda are coming up on two years of marriage. Do you get a lot of questions about starting a family? DREW We do get it a lot, especially from my

parents. We are looking forward to having kids. In the meantime we’re getting a lot of practice babysitting our nieces and nephews. JONATHAN Are you saying that 2020 is the year of the babies? DREW Well, I’m not saying we have one ready to go, but hopefully soon!

Less time on the road, less flying, which means more time together with Linda for me and Zooey for Jonathan. JONATHAN There’s still a little bit of chaos because we spend time in different cities and different places. But I’m definitely spending more time in L.A. Having the home in Vegas is great, but we’re not there a heck of a lot. Really, for me, it’s about spending every ounce of downtime I can with Zooey. It’s nice to actually have a reason to come and be in L.A. other than just to third-wheel with Drew and Linda. You have built your businesses as a unit. How do you feel about launching solo projects? DREW Linda and I are starting our podcast At

Home with Linda and Drew Scott, but it’s still a part of us as a family and us as a whole. It’s a great thing for Linda and me to be able to sit down and have conversations, but it really does tie into what we do as a whole. Even if Jonathan wants to go and do a short-run tour with his magic, I would be there to support. So even when we go off and do our own things, it’s still a part of the whole. Why did you decide to launch your new lifestyle magazine Reveal? JONATHAN We’ve been moving down this path,

inspiring people, for years and years, and we want to take it to the next level. We want to do something that’s a little bit different and talk about how it all starts at home, but home impacts every other aspect of your life. DREW For us, it’s opening up a little more with our lives, and then it’s also bringing in amazing people who are sharing their life stories as well. I think that’s how we can inspire people. What are you most looking forward to in the next decade? DREW Who knows what the future’s going to

hold for us? I think we’ll stay rooted, like we have been our whole lives, to family and to raising the bar, making sure we always keep our word with everything that we’re going to do. Family is the most important thing to us.

ven from outer space the churning clouds of white smoke from the explosive wildfires that have been ravaging much of Australia in recent weeks look threatening. But down on the charred ground—where thousands of residents have been evacuated by naval ships, entire towns have been reduced to ash and millions of acres of eucalyptus forests and bushland continue to burn—the situation is catastrophic. “We’ve never seen fires like this,” Jim Radford, a researcher at Melbourne’s La Trobe University, told The New York Times. “It really is an ecological Armageddon.” So far 136 different fires have claimed 24 human lives, burned more than 14.8 million acres and killed nearly half a billion animals, driving some species to near extinction. “It was terrible,” said one elderly woman who was evacuated from the seaside town of Mallacoota. “I will never go back.” Australians have long battled massive bushfires during the country’s dry season, but a record three-year drought and temperatures upward of 110° this year made the country particularly vulnerable to the fires, which experts trace to a variety of causes, including lightning strikes and arson. “Climate change didn’t cause these fires, but it set the stage for making them more devastating,” says Bob Deans, with the National Resources Defense Council. As celebs like Chris Hemsworth and his family pledged $1 million and Pink, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman each contributed $500,000 to local firefighters, officials fear the worst may be yet to come. “The crisis is not over,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Jan. 5. “There are months to go.”

By the time Magda and Russel Newman got to the

hospital delivery room on Feb. 7, 2004, Magda had already labored through the night. Hers had been a healthy pregnancy—at the six-month sonogram, her doctor noted only that the baby’s “nose looks big”—and the 24-year-old was excited to deliver her first child. Magda recalls Russel, then 35, cheering her on: “You’ve got this! I see the head!” Then came a terrifying silence. Magda saw Russel grab his hair as the delivery team hustled the newborn to an adjacent alcove. The stunned stillness was broken by Russel’s wails of “Oh God, oh my God!” It was then that Magda caught her first glimpse of Nathaniel, with his cone-shaped head, 66

A M o t h e r ’s Devotion

Magda (at home with Nathaniel in December) says she spent his first 10 years in “a constant state of panic.” He calls her “extraordinary . . .  she did so much of the worrying and had to deal with medical stuff that really grossed her out.”

A ROUGH ROAD

Nathaniel (with Magda in the NICU) had almost no jaw, struggled to breathe and couldn’t nurse.

A tracheostomy performed when he was 6 weeks old allowed him to breathe through a tube in his neck.

has endured nearly 70 surgeries to allow him to breathe, hear, swallow and speak. At home in Sammamish, Wash., with his brother Jacob, 13, Nathaniel says Treacher  Collins, which affects 1 in 50,000, is what “normal” is to him. “I’ve always known I was different. I like to think I’m strong. If we were all ‘normal,’ we’d all have to be the same.” Such wisdom is something Magda and Russel couldn’t even imagine back when they were struggling through each day. At 6 weeks old, Nathaniel nearly died from respiratory failure. An emergency tracheotomy installed a stoma in his throat that would require constant monitoring and limit his activity (no swimming or showering alone) for the next 13 years. GRACE UNDER PRESSURE

In an excerpt from Normal, Nathaniel talks about how he has learned to handle stares—and worse—from strangers. When I was younger and kids stared at me, I didn’t notice. If I noticed, I ignored it. Because I let insults roll over my shoulders, I don’t remember too many stories about specific incidents, but there’s one that I do remember. At the end of second grade, we moved from Connecticut back to Charlotte, N.C. It was the end of October, almost Halloween, and Dad took me and my brother Jacob to get frozen yogurt. Mine was drowning in peanut butter cups, my favorite. We sat down outside to enjoy our desserts when a grownup came up to me and said, “Wow, where did you get such a cool mask? I wish I had a mask like that for Halloween.” This guy looked like he thought he’d just made the funniest joke in the world. My dad was about to explode. I know because he told me afterwards. But he’s taught me to be polite. So I smiled at the guy and said, “It’s not a mask. It’s my face.” I just hit him with the simple facts. Then I went back to eating my yogurt. It was outstanding. swollen eyes and misshapen ear. “No one would show him to me,” she writes in her new memoir, Normal: A Mother and Her Beautiful Son. “Then I saw his profile. . . . Something was very wrong.” She asked her doctor: “Did I deliver an alien?” Fifteen years later Magda cringes at those words. But Nathaniel takes them in typical teenage stride. “Yeah . . . my own mother thought I was an alien. Nice,” the high school sophomore writes in the companion memoir for young readers, titled Normal: One Kid’s Extraordinary Journey. Diagnosed with a severe case of Treacher Collins syndrome—a congenital disorder in which underdeveloped bones in the face and jaw cause sloped eyes, missing or malformed ears and blocked airways, but no mental disabilities—Nathaniel could easily be the real-life Auggie Pullman of R.J. Palacio’s 2012 novel Wonder. But the author met the Newmans only after she hit the bestseller list and her viral “Choose H o l l y w o o d ’s Kind” movement transTa k e formed how the world Nathaniel saw children with facial auditioned differences. “It spread a lot for—but didn’t get—the role of understanding,” Nathaniel of Auggie in says of the book, which became 2017’s Wonder, a 2017 film. It was Palacio who starring (above) encouraged Magda—a former Julia Roberts concert pianist—and Nathanand Jacob iel to write their story. “What Tremblay. I love is there’s nothing heroic; they’re just living their lives,” says Palacio. “Magda and Russel are committed to giving Nathaniel a normal life without feeling sorry for themselves. That’s what makes them wonders.” Normal is a tricky concept for Nathaniel, who

Nathaniel (age 3) has little sense of smell and, without his hearing aids, is entirely deaf.

“I had to protect Nathaniel when we were younger, before Wonder,” says his brother Jacob. “I was his bodyguard.”

his airway, the surgeon accidentally drilled into Nathaniel’s brain. When he was 12 he became the second child to undergo a groundbreaking “halo” surgery that sewed his eyes and jaw shut, broke almost every bone in his face, and installed rods with screws that, for three months, the Newmans would tighten daily (“barbaric,” Magda calls it) to realign his jaw and open his airway so the trach could come out. Following the surgery, Nathaniel’s heart stopped for 22 seconds. Amid all this, the couple had genetic counseling

and prenatal testing and added son Jacob to the family. They also moved seven times to accommodate Russel’s work for insurance companies— the only way they could chip away at Nathaniel’s medical bills, which top $1.6 million and counting. Unthinkably, Magda, who stayed home to care for Nathaniel full-time, twice battled cancer during this span, including stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She recalls how, after accepting that “God picked me to raise this child,” she railed against him: “Where are you? Are you kidding me?” Now cancer-free, she and Russel credit their son with getting them through the crises. “Nathaniel never said, ‘Why me?’ ” Russel says, “so how could we?” Today Nathaniel is free of his trach, able to trampoline and roll around with the family’s four dogs. He’s working on his black belt in tae kwon do and hopes to be a veterinarian. “I love how happy animals get when you care for them,” he says. His parents have put off thinking ahead to the prospect of Nathaniel starting his own family. He has a 50 percent chance of passing on Treacher Collins, though genetic testing and IVF could mitigate that risk. “Whether or not he has children—and how—is a moral decision we will leave to Nathaniel,” says Magda. Right now they’re just savoring the normal. “What we look like on the outside is a shell. True beauty comes from the way we treat others,” Magda says. And in that, she adds, “I feel so lucky. We have it all.”

Jennifer Garner has a case of the butterflies. She’s not anxious about a new movie or a red carpet appearance—she’s just hoping that kids will enjoy her latest organic baby food, Jen & the Giant Squash. It’s the first product in her Once Upon a Farm line, made with produce from her family’s farm in Locust Grove, Okla., where her mom, Patricia, grew up, and her uncle and aunt Robert and Janet English live now, growing organic squash on the previously dormant farm.“I always collaborate on the flavors, but this is the first time I’ve ever said, ‘Okay, I think it should be this,’ ” Garner, 47, says. “I’m so nervous. I just hope they like it so I get to do it again.” She called from a ski vacation with Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Samuel, 7, the three kids she shares with ex-husband Ben Affleck, to chat about food and “finding joy” in the new decade. This new baby food is two years in the making. How does it feel now that it’s finally ready?

It’s so exciting. I can’t believe that we’re going to have something that was actually grown on the farm where my mom grew up, by my uncle, and I got to do the recipe. It’s just so fun. 70

January 20, 2020

Was your mom involved?

No, other than cheering us on. Of anything I’ve ever done, this means the most to my mom—that her farm is being brought back to life, and it’s growing things for babies. It’s just the coolest. You have your own little farm at home in California. How’s that going?

It’s really a garden. But yes, I will always—even if I moved back to New York City—find a way to have a garden. There’s nothing better than knowing that you’re eating food that you grew. What’s the latest with Hennifer and your other chickens?

They’re all molting, which is the time of year when they lose their feathers and new feathers grow in and they look crazy. They all look hungover. [Laughs] They don’t lay while they molt except for Hennifer. I don’t know if that’s normal, but she’s so faithful, every day you go out there and there’s a little Hennifer egg. How do you decide what to make on your Pretend Cooking Show on Instagram and Facebook?

I only do things that I’m seriously about to make, and then we’re just like, “Oh, you know what, let’s just film this.” I don’t stop and brush my

It feels like a fresh start. I’m loving working on Yes Day right now for Netflix. It’s a movie [based on the bestselling kids’ book] that I developed and am producing as well as starring in. I couldn’t love the process more. If I could be lucky enough to have another year with three healthy kids and parents and sisters and nieces and nephews and friends . . . and we’re all going through whatever, but if we’re all still chugging along and finding joy, then okay, that’s good enough for me.

n the afternoon of Feb. 2, 1986, two boys riding their dirt bikes through an overgrown 25-acre expanse of land along Calder Road in League City, Texas, became overwhelmed by a sickening smell. They thought it might be the decaying corpse of a dog or maybe a deer, but as they traced the smell to its origin, they found something far more horrifying: the decomposing bodies of two young women. Investigators soon identified the first body as 16-year-old Clear Creek High School sophomore Laura Miller, last seen at a pay phone nearly two years earlier. But police NO LONGER had no idea who the other UNKNOWN woman was—and Jane Doe remained unidentified. Five years later, horseback riders making their way through the brush and mesquite trees in the same area came upon another decomposing body—just yards away from where the others had been found. And again police couldn’t identify the woman. Janet Doe joined Jane Doe in the League City coroner’s office. Since 1971 dozens of murder victims have been found in and near the eerie stretch of land along the Interstate For nearly 45 corridor between Galthree decades the veston and Houston—the bodies of Audrey Lee Cook (top) and “killing fields,” to locals— Donna Gonsoulin and police believe at least Prudhomme were some of the murders are unidentified by police. “Now that connected. “A lot of heartwe know who they ache,” says FBI Superviare,” says Richard sor Senior Resident Agent Rennison of the FBI, “we are closer Richard Rennison of the to solving the case.” case. “A lot of people not knowing what happened to their loved ones. DNA AND EVIDENCE

FBI and League City Police (at an April 15 press conference) found victims’ identities by tracking DNA markers in family-genealogy databases. “This opened doors to leads to identify the killer,” says Agent Rennison.

Connected by a Killer? Dozens of victims have been found along the notorious I-45 corridor known as the Texas killing fields. While some of the cases have been solved, others remain open and possibly connected, including those of Heide Fye, Audrey Cook, Laura Miller and Donna Gonsoulin Prudhomme. “Science is evolving, and that goes in our favor,” says Rennison. “I’m very optimistic.”

ways of working with DNA technology, finally has a break in the case—and names for Jane and Janet Doe. After running the women’s DNA profiles through a national genealogy database, researchers discovered that Jane is Audrey Lee Cook, 30, a mechanic last seen by her family in 1985; and Janet is Donna Gonsoulin Prudhomme, 34, a married mom of two boys who had disappeared in 1991. “These women, they couldn’t defend themselves. They couldn’t speak for themselves,” says Dr. Connie Bormans, lab director at FamilyTree DNA, who

haunted League City for years. In December 2018 police, working with forensic experts, created DNA-based sketches based on skull reconstructions and sent the images out into the public, hoping someone might recognize the women—but no answers came. Then, a month later, detectives used the DNA to construct family trees of potential relatives of the victims and ran the information through national databases. A match for Donna came through in “minutes,” according to Rennison; Audrey’s followed days later. Once law enforcement confirmed the results, they contacted the women’s relatives. “Families got some closure,” says Rennison. And authorities got some potential crucial new clues to what they believe is at least one serial killer operating in the area. “This opened two huge doors to the possibility of more leads to identify the killer, which is the ultimate goal,” says Rennison. “The fact that we know who these two people are will certainly give us additional leads. We need to talk to people who knew them, to tell us anything they remember. Who did they date? Who were their friends? What did they do in school? Just everything.”

The victims’ relatives also hope for answers about what happened to their missing family members. Audrey, who was born in Memphis and eventually moved to the Houston area, where she found work as a rental-car and golf-cart mechanic, had grown estranged from her family but always called her mother on Christmas and her birthday. In 1986 Audrey’s mother never got a call, and a letter she had sent Audrey was returned. “It worried her mother,” recalls Audrey’s sister-in-law Shirley Love, who says Audrey’s parents died without knowing what happened to their daughter. “In 33 years there was never a period more than six months that I wasn’t doing something to locate her,” she says. “I never gave up.” Last year Love saw a Facebook post from police asking for help identifying Jane Doe that showed a sketch of a woman with a gap in her bottom teeth. “The hair on my body just rose,

and I went, ‘Oh my God,’ ” she recalls. “I just knew.” Love put police in touch with a fourth cousin of Audrey’s, who provided the DNA sample that put the pieces together. In the case of Donna, the answers came after investigators matched Janet Doe’s DNA to that of a deceased Louisiana man and contacted the man’s daughter-in-law Shera LaPoint. LaPoint, who herself is a genealogist, spent the next weeks working with police to build family trees until she finally figured out who Janet might be. “It consumed me,” LaPoint says. “When I finally found out her name and saw a picture of her, I just broke down.” Donna had apparently fled Louisiana for Texas after an abusive relationship, leaving her two sons in the care of their grandmother. “She loved music and she loved people,” says her sister Dianne Hastings. “She was a happy, fun, loving mother, sister and friend.” Hastings is relieved to have answers about her sister but admits the closure also brings pain. “If I think about the way she was murdered,” she says, “it’s too much to bear.” For now investigators continue searching for any clues about the lives the victims led before they died in hopes of bringing their killer or killers to justice. “We’re making progress,” the FBI’s Rennison says. “No amount of time that’s passed is too long. This can be solved.” If you have any information about the case, please contact the FBI tip line at 800-CALL-FBI January 20, 2020

in 2018’s Black Panther, but in his new film Just Mercy, the actor, 32, plays a real-life superhero: lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who, for the past 31 years, has worked tirelessly toward freeing wrongfully convicted inmates from death row and reforming the criminal justice system in America. “We’re in this era of over-incarceration, where one in three black male babies born in this country is expected to go to jail or prison,” says Stevenson, 60, whose bestselling 2014 memoir Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption is the basis for the inspirational film. “Some of us have to have a hope that we can disrupt that. That we can actually get us closer to the

(A 2017 study found that 87 percent of black exonerees sentenced to death were victims of official misconduct.) “If you have some type of heart, some type of mercy, you would be able to see that is wrong,” says Jordan. None of what Stevenson does is easy. “Human rights work is standing next to people who are about to be executed, people who are hated and disfavored, and affirming their dignity,” he says. “You can’t do that without setbacks. But the beautiful thing is that if you keep fighting, you can get to justice.”

The film recounts the harrowing true story of how Stevenson worked to free Walter McMillian (played by Jamie Foxx), a wrongfully convicted woodcutter from Alabama who was sentenced to death in 1988 for the murder of Ronda Morrison, an 18-year-old white woman who had been strangled and shot at the dry cleaners where she worked. After only a dayand-a half-long trial, McMillian was found guilty, despite six black witnesses who testified he was at a fish fry at the time of the murder. Stevenson showed that the prosecution’s star witness, a white convict, Ralph Bernard Myers, had lied about McMillian on the stand after being pressured by law enforcement. After four appeals McMillian’s conviction was finally overturned in 1993, and he was cleared of all charges. McMillian died in 2013.

Tr o u b l i n g Early Signs

Most reported cases have been influenza B, “which is unusual for this time of year,” says the CDC’s Scott Pauley.

Could This Be the Worst Flu Season in a Decade?

With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reporting more than 6.4 million cases since Sept. 29, this flu season is off to a roaring start—the worst since 2003. People spoke to Dr. Richard J. Webby, Ph.D., a researcher with the Department of Infectious Disease at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and CDC spokesman Scott Pauley to find out what you need to know. What do these scary numbers mean?

A | “This is definitely an earlier season,” says Pauley, “[and] it’s definitely a concern that we’ve been maintaining it for so long. We’re at eight weeks of sustained activity above the baseline. Also, the main flu strain is type B, and we haven’t seen that since the early ’90s. . . . If [the number of cases] continues to increase, we could end up having one of the more severe seasons we’ve had in a while.” What’s the difference between influenzas A and B?

A | “When we’re talking about the epidemic seasonal flu, A and B are the culprits,” says Webby. B y J U L I E M A Z Z I OT TA

“Influenza A starts as an animal virus, then jumps over to humans. Influenza B circulates only in humans. But the symptoms all start the same— with rapid-onset muscle aches and fevers. [The vaccines contain antigens for both types.] Tragically, this season has been particularly hard on children, with 27 flu-related deaths. Why so many?

A | “This is the most we’ve had at this point in the season in 16 seasons, probably because of the influence of influenza B,” says Pauley. “While children are likely to have had some exposure to influenza A from their parents, they’re not as likely to have been in contact with influenza B, so it’s going to have more of an impact on them.” What can people do to avoid the flu?

A | “Anyone 6 months or older needs to get a flu vaccine,” says Pauley. “Beyond that, wash your hands and avoid contact with people who have the flu. And if you have it, stay home. But the No. 1 thing is to get the flu shot.” Webby seconds that, adding, “It’s certainly not too late.”

tsp. kosher salt tsp. ground white pepper Toasted baguette slices, for serving 3⁄ 4 1⁄ 4

1. Combine wine and shallot in a large saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium high. Reduce heat to medium low, and simmer until shallots are tender, about 2 minutes. Add salmon fillet pieces, and cook until just barely opaque, 2 to 3 minutes. Pour through a fine-mesh strainer, reserving salmon and shallot; discard poaching liquid.

BLACK

It’s the most common variety and has the strongest pepper flavor. Freshly ground, it’s the go-to for everyday cooking.

WHITE

They’re black peppercorns with the skins removed— making them less pungent and less visible in lightcolored foods, like Ripert’s salmon recipe.

2. Line a baking sheet with a kitchen towel or a paper towel; spread salmonand-shallot mixture over towel. Place baking sheet in refrigerator, and cool completely, about 20 minutes. 3. Gently stir together poachedsalmon mixture, smoked salmon, mayonnaise, lemon juice, chives, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. (Be careful not to overmix.) Serve with toasted baguette slices. Serves: 8 Active time: 15 minutes Total time: 40 minutes

PINK

The floral flavor and vibrant color make these dried berries best suited for light sauces or final garnishes.

PHIL POYNTER/TRUNK ARCHIVE

Last indulgence I used to hate baths because I felt like you were just sitting in gross water, but recently all my friends have been giving me essential oils. I’ve taken baths with them the past three nights. Last class I took I worked out with my friend at this place called Training Mate. I spent the whole class laughing because there were pregnant women who looked so strong, and I could barely do any of the exercises. Last guilty pleasure A full bag of Bounty chocolate bars, which I never had before. There were at least 30, and I ate all of them over two days in London. I was obsessed. Last time I danced Yesterday while shooting the music video for my next single. I’m not a good dancer, but I love movement. I can be kind of quirky and strong at the same time. I feel like I have a release. Last thing I stole from work Anything cozy! I’ve stolen T-shirts and maybe even a blanket. I’ll be like, “Ooh, I really like that hoodie,” and then I have to run away.
