MAGAZINE THE POWER OF READERSHIP MAGAZINES! up by 0.9 crores - IRS Q1 2019 AS THE SUPERHERO All media is growing, and Print continues to grow despite the general belief that Print is declining. Readership is largely influenced by two things - literacy level and your disposable income. If you have money, then only will you buy a newspaper. Luckily in India, both those things have moved upwards. Ashish Bhasin, CEO - Greater South and Chairman & CEO - India, Dentsu Aegis Network and Chairman, MRUC I am very happy that Print is growing across all languages, and that Print titles in Digital are doing well too. The Print industry in India is still robust and effective, unlike in the Western world. Shashi Sinha, CEO, IPG Mediabrands, India What is disappointing is the fact that niche publications that serve an important segment have consistently been ignored. A different methodology must be used to ensure correct findings for such publications, but sadly both Neilsen and the MRUC Technical Committee have so far not done this. Hormusji Cama, CEO, Mumbai Samachar I am happy to see that Print numbers are growing because it also proves the point that everything is not wrong with Print, and Digital is not the only way to go forward. It justifies the argument that Print has an established sort of acceptance. Indranil Roy, CEO, Outlook Group

PRINT IS GROWING No. of additional readers added since IRS 2017 Dailies - 1.8 crores Magazines - 0.9 crores Total number of Print Readers - 42.5 crores

Magazine Advertising actually works! INCREASE WITH 38 MILLION NEW READERS.

ED’SNOTE

EDITOR’S NOTE Before I jump into the first issue of 2020, the editorial team of TIHG wishes you, your family and friends the very best for the coming year! This is that time of the year when we look back at the year gone, and to plan for the new year. We, at TIHG, also have a resolution - to keep you, our dear readers informed about the new trends and the top decor stories from India and rest of the world. Change can be good, and sometimes even necessary. And this is the reason, we decided to bring all the new designs, patterns, textures that are on the horizon in this issue! So, if you are trying to figure out what to do with your home this year, we have featured a few trends, collected from Interior Designer and Architects’ firm that will make their way to our homes in the coming months.

We have a surprise! With our overworked lives, it is very important to pause and focus on our partner (read spouse). I am not stressing this for the upcoming Valentine’s Day, but I feel the most important gift that you can give, is to show that they really matter to you. Don’t book a romantic dinner at a high-end eatery, rather set up a beautiful table, cook simplest dishes ever and enjoy the company of your partner. Try this, because when was the last time you did something so personal for them? With this and many more interesting stories such as decorating with classic blue, adding florals to home, and digital prints in furniture, make your house an Art Home. Stay inspired always! r.singh@nextgenpublishing.net

The curated directory for Ambiente 2020 has taken the meta-trend sustainability to a new momentum with an increase of 66 companies this year

“The Show” for the entire industry, Ambiente is undoubtedly the world’s number one in products associated with dining, cooking, household items, furnishings and ornaments, interior design, gifts, jewellery and fashion accessories. Over and above the product range offered by the exhibitors, Ambiente 2020 will also provide its visitors with a variety of first-hand options to learn about sustainability. The Ambiente Ethical Style Guide has become established as a valuable tool for forward-looking retailers who have embraced the spirit of our time. This special exhibitors’ directory, which covers all product groups, leads visitors to companies that make products under sustainable and socially responsible conditions, while also helping them to come to a better assessment of the products on offer. To assist the reader, the Ethical Style Guide has six clearly defined categories: Environmentally Friendly Materials, ResourceFriendly Manufacturing, Fair & Socially Responsible Production, Re/Upcycling Design, Handmade Manufacturing and Sustainable Innovation. “Classic consumerism is currently giving way to an increase in ethical consumerism. People want to feel positive about the things they surround themselves with, and this makes them more mindful and critical in their buying behaviour. Moreover, they are usually well informed and ask about the origin, manufacturing method, materials and social responsibility associated with a product. But it also presents retailers with new challenges. It means deciding between recyclable solutions and fair trade projects as well as between good marketing and greenwashing: Which suppliers and which products are genuinely sustainable and in which areas? Answers to such questions can be found in the Ethical Style Guide,” says Nicolette Naumann, Vice President of Ambiente. The world’s biggest consumer goods trade fair will take place in Frankfurt from 7 to 11 February 2020. Last year it welcomed 4,460 exhibitors from over 90 countries. MARTAND KHOSLA X GUNJAN GUPTA ‘Chairity Starts at Home’ are 24 small chair objects that reflect the world and its structures while reimagining seats. The work primarily uses brass and brick dust in a fun collaboration. The fun is further extended to the names, such as sofa-ltu, ek do teen chair, and in a bad mooda, etc.

PUNEET KAU USHIK x AYUSH KASLIWAL Making a political statement through a chair, Take’me’ has all the elements of a functional objject but is disoriented in a way that it no longer performs its functions, and mocks its own existence. The chair is made of embroidered beads on canvas, wood, cast m metal, synthetic fur and natural wood - signiffying the variety of people and institutions thaat constitute India. Its bold red signals the soreness and the warnings that the situation needs to change.

VALAY GADA x MANDEEP NAGI The Anchorite’s Armchair: A Seat for the Soul is an artwork that reflects the tension between the often harsh reality of life and the delicacy of the internal spiritual journey. Made of brass, mild steel, cotton, fabric, gold foil and beads, the marriage of the strength of metal and the softness of fabric recreates the inevitable tensions of modern urban life and the sublime solitude craved by the soul.

GR IRANNA x KLOVE The Umbilical Chair is a visual representation of the relationship between humans and social influences. The birds are symbolic of a need to break free from the pressures that intertwine our lives daily where as the chair represents the social interactions we hold on to.

MARCANTONIO X SCARLET SPLENDOUR Marcantonio thinks that the greatest inspiration comes from nature, both from its forms and from its attitude, everything in nature is essential and functional. He sees a great similarities in the natural world, within it and also compared to our world. The expansion of the city recalls the growth of certain micro organism, a tree remembers our veins. In the Forest Chair, he has worked with the concept of “vegetal animal” as it creates a hybrid that evokes a stronger of word than natural.

BOSE KRISHNAMACHARI X ALEX DAVIS “…and the 4th chair” takes inspiration from the renowned conceptual artist, Joseph Kosuth’s and his most written about art work, ‘One and Three Chair’ (1965). In his work, Kosuth represents one chair in three ways, a chair as an object, a photograph of the chair in actual scale and as a copy of the dictionary definition of a chair, whereby completing all the three forms of perceptions. Alex and Bose created the fourth chair with the help of Braille language. They wanted to explore inclusiveness as well minimalism with their design. An ‘idea’ opened to the space to visually experience and sensitise slowly. ANITA DUBE X MADHAV RAMAN O Phantom of Liberty, a conceptual cleansing duo that is sheltered in two-tone of velvet that conceals the real material - ceramic, was ideated after a conversation around chairs, and then plonk! the image of the iconic dinner scene from Luis Bunuel’s 1974 film, The Phamtom of Liberty where the guests arrived at the party were given WCs as the seats and there was no food and no eating rather the conversation moved from casual small talk towards politics, pollution and population. In real life too, WC is actually the first chair before starting the morning ritual. A functional throne, where the body is master of ceremonies.

KARL ANTAO x GURJIT MATHAROO An indication of worldly possession, ‘Me-Raaj’ is designed using hundreds of LED lights hung using optical fibre in the form of a conventional chair. The light gets on and off, and changes colours in a rhythmic flow, making the chair disappear for few seconds. The idea stresses on the notion of what is real and what may be a mirage.

SHAKUNTALA KULKARNI x SANJAY PURI Titled La Liberta (Freedom), the chair represents freedom in ways of design and interactive narratives. Nine 2 dimensional punctuated elliptical planes of varying sizes are angled differently while using singular element and material that appears to fly outwards in all direction depicts freedom. Rendering the chair interactive, four strips of images form a narrative, each one showcasing a series of movements, on different parts of the chair along the circular edges. Each strip again is fitted with a magnifying glass that can be moved to see the images in larger size. Different reels of the chair narrate different stories of the female warrior - fearless, powerful and free. TIHG The Ideal Home and Garden January 2020 |

Throughout the house, you can witness a wide variety of styles which Peti Lau combined to emphasize the eclecticism of the house’s architecture.

The family art piece dictates the overall look and feel of the room. Complimenting the powerul piece is an equally bold colour palette- Benjamin Moore’s Polo Blue on the walls creates a statement and “a sense of sexiness and masculinity”.

It is customary to say that the house is the mirror of the soul. Considering that this is a totally true statement, it is natural that a man who’s achieved fame and wealth mixing music would be drawn to a house that’s a hodgepodge of archetectural styles. “All we know” is that the home of Alex Pall, half of the Chainsmokers - a Grammywinning DJ duo- was built in the 1930s and had renovations done in the 1980s and 90s which added a dash of industrial edge. The mashup is what appealed to the DJ and he turned to interior designer Peti Lau to help him decorate his Hollywood Hills house. Pall had already installed the nature-themed wallpaper and the orange-velvet couch in the family room when Lau began decorating the house. She acontinued the interior- jungle theme, as she called it, with a natural-fiber coffee table that evokes dried versions of the leaves on the wall, and leopard and tribalprint pillows. The orange, green and blue palette of the painting by Hassan Hajjaj recurs in trippy throw pillows from Silken

Chic Spaces The circles on the sideboard are engraved to the back and side of the unit too, giving it an extreme character and hightened look. It is a perfect furniture piece for retro lovers or mid-century admirers, giving the knurling knobs on the drawers or the tapered legs.

From tropical patterns in the living area to an almost romantic and slightly dramatic master bedroom, you will find that there is nothing boring about this interior decor! The Ideal Home and Garden January 2020 |

Chic Spaces

From the colourful, casual and youthful look to the details of luxury and refinement, these master bedrooms are a dream to any interior design lover.

Embracing the mix of style which was already going on in the house, the designer has approached each interior space as its own environment, mixing different decade styles and colours with Pall’s contemporary art collection.

Featuring a nice open layout, perfect to accommodate the tree that is literally growing through the entryway, the house boasts of classic bungalow features, including slate floors and stone fireplaces.

Chic Spaces

Favours and the vintage Turkish rug laid over a larger jute rug. The living room features a sideboard from Essential Home which is inspired by the 007 films. It is built entirely out of solid walnut wood, accented by its gold-plated brass front doors that feature a protruding circular design. “The house had this built-in eclecticism. It felt appropriate to approach each interior space as its own unique environment.” The international Interior Designer brashly mixed decades and colours and incorporated Alex Pall’s growing contemporary art collection, an approach that miraculously holds each room together. She has developed a signature style she coined AristoFreak. Peti expresses her worldy inspirations with eclectic colours, patterns, and textures to create romance and moods in all of her spaces. It is Lau’s ideology of “old world charms” adapted for modern living that gave this house a oneof-a-kind vibe. tIhG

Infinity or everlasting flowers are flowers that are natural and conserved to retain their beauty for a long time. Usually these flowers last for a year, and can live up to three years on some occasions. Different florists from around the world have come up with amazing techniques of preservation. These arrangements of preserved roses start with the finest blooms and foliage sourced from the very best growing regions all over the world. These roses are treated quickly after picking which ensures they are in prime condition with all their stunning natural looks captured in time. When they reach their peak of growth each rose has their sap replaced with a moisturizing preservative which keeps them soft and supple with the look and feel of a fresh rose but with an up to three year extended life These flowers require minimal care, with no watering or sun needed. They should be kept away from direct sunlight and avoid being watered. These flowers retain their natural value and biodegradability even after preservation. This process is a great way to add nature in your space in an environment friendly way. TIHG

" To bring about a French classic style, one needs to understand that elegance and boldness have to be balanced in the way the various elements are used, and the colours are diluted by the overall modern volume. For example, in this space a modern plain ceiling and fishtailed patterned wooden floor are glamorised by a very classic gold leafed fireplace and chairs upholstered in teal blue colour. The Design and furniture brands: The Great Eastern Home, Ficus Fine Living, Square Barrel and one of India’s first contemporary art gallery Nine Fish

62 | January 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

The very premises of The Great Eastern H o m e spread over two and half Mumbai is ted Design and Art District. While most of the world’s major cities have dedicated areas where designers, architects, artists, collectors, can visit to browse and choose, and generally get their fill of all things aesthetic, our cities lack the same. This is therefore the only one of its kind in the country. The Great Eastern Home - India’s premium luxury brand for furniture and decor, stands here in all its historical grandeur and size (over 60,000 sq ft of display) along with two other fascinating brands as well as the Nine Fish Art Gallery which is fast getting acclaimed as the country’s most beautiful gallery of contemporary art. Bustling with activities, and alive with regular visits from its dedicated and discerning clients and followers, the premises is a true ‘oasis of aesthetics’. Come here any of the seven days, and you will find great art shows, the most exquisite collection of antiques for sale, furniture from across the world, accessories, with activities ranging from plays and theatre, serious music performances, performance art, seminars on art and architecture, book launches etc. And the best of all is the quant and old world setting of the premises. Tall trees and old buildings, forgotten nooks and crannies crammed with treasures, a deep fresh water pond with a surface area of over an acre full of tortoises, surrounded by migratory birds and wild geese in the very heart of Mumbai. The premises is on that of the last of the

running textiles mills of Mumbai, one of the only surviving serene and tranquil spaces still left in the city. The brands therefore boast proudly of their 185 year old corporate and physical legacy: this very mill having being one of the most cutting edge textile design innovators for over a century. The legacy of aesthetic palpitates in very brick and stone of the buildings that house the brands. Some of the buildings stand stately since 1839, aglow with the patina of age and legacy! Besides The Great Eastern Home, the other major brand beautifully embedded within the premises in Ficus Fine Living. Ficus is a younger, more contemporary version of The Great Eastern Home. Fresh in its outlook and cutting edge design, it is today one of the most upcoming new presences the design scenario in India. Ficus has also opened its first branch in Colombo, Sri Lanka, thus becoming of India’s furniture brands to go international. One little treasure is also Square Barrel - a small, but delightfully eccentric brand bringing forth interesting contemporary furniture and accessories which while new and fresh and infused with traditional and tribal art forms and exquisite hand craftsmanship. Full of intrigue and surprises, it is a sheer pleasure to walk through its collection. Nine Fish needs no introduction in India’s art world. It has taken the art world by storm by its sheer physical architectural beauty and vast spaces. It is also getting known not only for the formidable shows its presents, but in line with the aesthetics standards of the premises, its very very brilliant curatorial standards. The academic presentation and the aesthetic details of the same have raised the bar of the presentation standards of shows in India. TIHG

The more we appreciate nature and all its forms, the more we will look after it. Lilac will be a strong colour choice as well as brown and pistachio. The base is all about fine lines and the use of concrete, glass and sustainable woods, in order to create a mixture of textures. But most important of all, is incorporating comfort into the home. This is because given the current state of the world, this is exactly what we need- making the word ‘Home’ increasingly more important.” ~ Kelly Hoppen, Kelly Hoppen Interiors

“To mark the Year of Tolerance in the UAE in our own unique way, we proposed the idea to ‘weave tolerance’ into the social fabric of our society through the creativity of these gifted children. The very nature of threads in various colours and textures mixed together and then being so tightly woven is suggestive of a society without division.” ~ Gavin Lewis, General Manager, Hands Carpets Middle East

Nestled under the larger event - Dubai Design Week, Downtown Design 2019 was filled with manufacturers to designers showcasing innovating and inspiring designs from all across the world. The year was special for Hands for two reasons- an artistic collaboration with a non-profit organisation ‘Senses’ and the opening of their first international boutique in the Dubai Design District that presented its latest collections. Using the leaves and branches of the Ghaf tree to apply the paint instead of a paint brush, the children at Senses had created artwork in July 2019. These artworks

were then assimilated by the Hands’ design team and have formed the basis of a one-of-a-kind piece that was completed by end-October, creating a masterpiece more than four months in the making. 31 colours making 54 combinations were used, with at least 25 different hands involved in various parts of the process of creating this hand-tufted carpet, including design, dyeing, weaving, backing and finishing. The tree, its leaves and the black leaves are all made with fine pure silk and the background with fine New Zealand wool. The finished product was on display at Downtown Design. TIHG

Made from waste procured from factories, construction sites, small artisans, households and just about anywhere, along with other eco-friendly material, WorkshopQ aims to establish this as the standard way of creating objects. They make clocks, trays, photo frames, tissue boxes, coasters, card holders, lamps; just about anything eye-catching and which is of utility! The brand also strives to reduce the impact of its own business by using scrap paper for any documentation, keeping packaging to a minimum and using recycled or recyclable material wherever possible. We think WorkshopQ is definitely setting an example all over the world.

PLASTICIET “Plastic is the gold of the present and we show that by transforming this waste stream into the raw material for the next economy.” Plasticiet is a Dutch startup that aims to create “something of value” from recycled plastic for use in interior and furniture design. Based in Rotterdam, the startup was founded by designers Marten van Middelkoop and Joost Dingemans. The idea originated from a romantic vision and passion for material development within the topic of sustainability. Plasticiet produces sheet-plastic materials that are similar in appearance to manmade stone composites like terrazzo, using recycled plastic collected and processed in collaboration with recycling companies across the Netherlands. The sheets are made up of different-sized pieces of coloured plastic to produce a variety of effects, and can currently be produced in sheets up to 80 cms by 80 cms, and are being worked upon to produce bigger sizes in the future. Plastic is a global problem and finding a way to process large volumes of this problematic material to a building block with a visual language that almost everyone recognizes is revolutionary.

SARAH TURNER Sarah Turner is an eco artist and designer who upcycles waste materials into new and beautiful creations. She works mostly with plastic bottles and cans, transforming them into unique lighting, pictures, sculptures, flowers and gifts. This is a unique art form where the designer collects waste materials from local businesses and homes. Sarah makes all of it by hand at her studio in Nottingham. She uses highly skilled cutting and intricate sculpting methods to transform these discarded materials into high quality unique objects. Sarah has made various objects including a plastic bottle elephant, a recycled dragon, a life sized WW1 tank and an illuminated plastic bottle family. She has also been commissioned by Coca-Cola for the London 2012 Olympic Games which included five giant chandeliers and a 9 metre high sculpture for the Olympic Park. Sarah analyses the natural properties and features of the waste material and takes advantage of them, using them in a new and different way. The lighting installations are particularly stunning.

One of the first modernist townhouses in Manhattan, this iconic property is rich with history, sophistication and postmodern elegance. Sherman M. Fairchild, a noted inventor , hired the architects William rge Nelson to create a home as adventurous as he was. They succeeded and the townhouse remains an architectural tour de force unlike any other in New York. The building’s red granite façade was completed in 1981 and hints at the wonders inside. The 9,440 sqft, 25 ft wide mansion is defined by a three-story great room, with a span of travertine walls illuminated from a glass and steel skylight. A zigzagging system of ramps facilitates the movement through the light-filled home. The result is an airy alternative to a traditional townhouse and the perfect setting for a worldclass art collection. The home includes a chef ’s kitchen, formal dining room, five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, two half bathrooms and a study/library. The master suite features two full bathrooms, floor to ceiling windows and a balcony overlooking 65th Street. An office, wine cellar, four additional bedrooms – one with a loft aerie infused with natural light – completes this one of a kind offering. This villa/townhouse is listed on the Christie’s International Real Estate website and it boasts 9,440 sqft of interior space. The townhouse is located on the Upper East Side, between Fifth and Madison Avenues with Central Park and Museum Mile at the doorstep. Nearby neighborhoods include: Midtown East, Turtle Bay, Theater District, Midtown, Rockefeller Center, Seaview Village, Central Park South, Midtown Center, Lenox Hill, Sutton Park, Sutton Place and Upper East Side. Archana Shivanandanm @plantstylistmumbai

Archana Shivanandanm is an entrepreneur- she owns an event management company in Mumbai called Seventeen Events- and a plant stylist also. Her Instagram page @plantstylistmumbai started off as a passion project, which led to her studying more about plants and experimenting with different spaces to see how they grow. Her posts of her plant babies gained popularity and she started helping her friends to style their spaces with plants and hence began the business. Archana takes only medium or large projects for homes, offices or other commercial spaces. She believes if someone has a small budget, they should invest the money in buying good quality plants and pots, and consult her videos/tips for DIYs. An entirely new concept of interior styling with plants is gaining popularity, in which Archana is a front-runner. Ask her about plants, and her passion shows in her enthusiasm. She looks at the process of caring of plants as therapeutic. “Plants add such a beautiful, living dimension to the room. If paired with right accessories such as porcelain pots, the right lighting, curios etc., they can elevate any space to feel tranquil and lush,” shares the plant stylist. For Archana, the most challenging spaces are always those with the least light. It’s almost impossible to get plants to live in spaces without windows or sunlight. ZZ plant, Snake plant, Syngoniums, Monstera Deliciousa and Travellers Palm, according to her are low light plants which can be placed where there isn’t much light. She also warns that “low-light” plants doens’t mean “no-light” plants. One should always place plants where there will recieve bright indirect light. “Plant’s food is sunlight, not water or fertilizer, so if you place your plant in bright indirect light then the plant requires very little care,” Archana advices.
