Joining Our Flash Drive as Florida-bred Grade 3 winners this year are Yes I Am Free, who took the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint on Feb. 11; Clapton, winner of the April 1 Ghostzapper at Gulfstream; and Drama Boy, who won the Clasico Velocidad

Named the 2022 Florida Breeder of the Year by the FTBOA board of directors, Arindel was the leading Florida breeder by Florida-bred earnings ($3,050,911), by Florida-bred black-type winners (6), blacktype wins (7) and wins (94).

Arindel’s six Florida-bred black-type winners were all homebreds by Arindel stallion Brethren. Leading the way was Florida-bred graded-stakes-winner Key Biscayne, who was joined by black-type winners Lynx, Clapton, Turbo, Gatsby and Octane.

Key Biscayne, a 2017 chestnut mare out of Boa Twelve, by Lemon Drop Kid, won the Grade 3 Robert G. Dick Memorial at Delaware Park. She was also third in the Sunshine Filly And Mare Turf at Gulfstream Park. On the season, Key Biscayne earned $177,968.

Lynx, a 2020 bay filly out of Darby Rose, by Red Bullet, was Arindel’s leading earner with $303,00. She was named the 2022 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old filly. Lynx won the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen and FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl at Gulfstream Park. Lynx also notched a second in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl.

Rounding out Arindel’s Florida-bred black-type winners and their seasonal earnings were: Clapton (Gil Campbell Memorial Handicap at Gulfstream Park/$216,620); Turbo (Juvenile Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park/$154,828); Gatsby (Sunshine Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park/$139,600) and Octane (FTBOA Marion County Florida Sire Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs/$108,480).

Alan Cohen established 500-acre Arindel in 2004 on what had been a cattle operation in southwest Marion County. TFH at Hipodromo de Monterrico in Peru. Drama Boy is owned by Stud Aurora and was bred by Get Away Farm.

Whether one uses historical metrics such as Kentucky Derby winners (six), Kentucky Derby starters (120), Breeders’ Cup wins (30), Breeders’ Cup starters (387), national champions (67), millionaires (180); more current measures such as stakes winners and graded stakes winners this year, Florida breeders always lead the way among regional markets.
