SHOPPING TO SAVOUR You can literally taste and smell Maryborough specialities when you explore varied shopping. The Engineers Arms Marketplace in the grand heritage building near the Mary Poppins statue is crammed with Fraser Coast souvenirs, screen prints, timber craft, ingenious products, rare local books and amusing creations. Taste CC’s rosella foods, Mary Macon lamb bacon; smell and sigh in Incandescents and find culinary creations and homewares tucked away around the streets. Seek out novelty items and Mary Poppins memorabilia at the Visitors Information Centre; meander the weekly Thursday market for more local wares and at the Bond Store museum discover regional liqueur in novelty bottles. Don’t miss speciality stores famed in all states: Anne’s fitted lingerie and Langers’ sensible shoes.

Vintage Treasu

res

Upmarket Bijoux antiques, intriguing collectables, old books and vintage treasures are tucked among secondhand goods in a dozen outlets in the city. On the outskirts are coffee shops with easy parking that mix cake and quiche with clothes, curios, crochet and lovables. A little further out, find fruity indulgence at the Lychee Divine shop and keep your eye out for macadamia products. Bauple is the home of the macadamia nut (the locals still call it the Bauple or bopple nut). So don’t miss macadamia treats. You’ll find them when you visit the Bauple museum.

BECAUSE WE HAVE DUNCAN, MARY, AND MUCH MORE

al pins Festiv Mary Pop

World’s Greatest Pu

b Fest

BECAUSE WE DO FESTIVALS WITH FLAIR RV travellers love a fun festival and Maryborough’s streets and parks are perfect to add instant atmosphere. In May thousands of crazy characters appear in the biggest costume event in Queensland as Australians march around Maryborough’s historic pubs to claim its place in the Guinness Book of Records for the World’s Greatest Pub Fest (join in and help set a world record. You don’t need to drink alcohol). In early June the heritage streetscapes and riverside parks backdrop the Relish gourmet food festival. Savour regional seafood flavours, match beer and food among rum barrels, taste wine under the trees and learn at live cooking demonstrations.

Relish Food and Wine Festival

In June-July the Mary Poppins umbrella goes up for the magical nanny’s festival, 10 days of events that lead to the famous Poppins in the Park day with nanny races and saucy chimney sweeps. A practically perfect celebration of Mary’s creator, PL Travers. In September it’s the teenage equivalent of Bathurst, the Technology Challenge when thousands of students with a thirst for speed, a bent for technology and an eye to the future build humanpowered vehicles and race them around the streets for 24 hours. A big favourite with our RV community – not to be missed on your travels. Check our community calendar for more in weekly, monthly and annual events celebrating art, music, eisteddfod, antique engines, gems, agriculture.

A statue of Mary Poppins perches outside the 19th Century bank building where her creator was born in 1899. Get your photo taken in Mary Poppins style next door, where the famous nanny can be glimpsed floating over the rooftop at night. In Queen’s Park, past Victorian treasures and the famed Winged Victory Cenotaph, is the statue of Duncan Chapman, the Maryborough man who was the first Anzac to step ashore at Gallipoli. Find a striking bell tower which was built for the love of magnificent Maria; the memorial fountain commemorating the two nurses who sacrificed their lives to save Australia from Black Death pneumonic plague; family history centre and records of 22,000 immigrants who sailed up the Mary River to forge a new life; a memorial to the islanders brought to work in the canefields; one of Australia’s finest military museums and a military trail; a Woo-Koo walk of artistic animals; the only RV Friendly regional theatre complex in Australia with international class shows. There’s so much more.

TRACING THE FAMILY TREE

Maryborough Herit age Centre

Dog Walk BECAUSE WE CAN LOOK AFTER YOU The Maryborough Visitor Information Centre has lists of everything an RV traveller needs from doctors and dentists to hairdressers and hardware. We can look after all personal needs as you explore a city packed with surprises and enchantment. We can even tell you where to find a dog sitter and boarding kennels if you need temporary care for your pooch. Just as importantly, you can find experienced trade and industrial expertise for all servicing, repair and modification work for motor homes and caravans. Maryborough’s proud industrial heritage has created a legacy of skills rarely found in a small city, where small industries evolving from our larger enterprises have flourished.

FRASERCOASTEVENTS.COM.AU

Find the convicts, lords and other characters in your family history at the unique Family Heritage Centre, with expert family researchers on two floors ready to help trace your family tree. With 22,000 19th Century immigrants landing in Wharf Street to start their lives in Australia, the picturesque building in Wharf Street is rich with unique information and can help new and experienced family researchers track their ancestors through the centuries.

Victory Cenotaph

With a signature RV Homebase and two more to be built close by, it is not surprising that Maryborough has earned a new accolade: Maryborough, RV Capital of Australia.

Last Friday Club | Unwind at the Brolga last Friday of the month, 5pm to 7pm. Live music, chilled beverages and share platters

BECAUSE WE TICK THE RV BOXES Stroll and savour Maryborough’s picturesque precincts in easy terrain to find all the attractions “top of the list” for RV travellers: History, heritage, intriguing museums, story trails, pretty walks, coffee shops, bakeries, unique gifts and souvenirs, pubs and restaurants with character. Best of all, we have that top asset that RV travellers seek: a friendly and welcoming community.

HERVEY

About three hours north of Brisbane in Australia’s most equable climate zone, Maryborough nestles beside the Bruce Highway at the crossroads of south-east Queensland. It is the centre of a day tripper region embracing Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach and the Great Sandy Strait villages. Roads to the west meander through rustic rural retreats, old country pubs (most are RV friendly), inland waterways, unique bridges and bush walking trails of varying difficulty.
