Separated parents are finding the challenges of co-parenting even more difficult to deal with during lockdown, a leading family law solicitor said today. The warning centres on estranged parents who are trying to maintain contact with their children whilst adhering to the present social distancing guidelines. Sue Hodgson, head of family law at Lanyon Bowdler in Telford, said the restrictions of lockdown were seeing already complicated family matters becoming even more difficult to deal with during the coronavirus crisis. And in another worrying trend, Sue said the firm, which has offices across Shropshire, Herefordshire and North Wales, was also seeing an increase in divorce enquiries as people anticipate the easing of the current restrictions. She said: “These are extremely difficult times for everybody, but separated parents are finding it particularly tough as the often strained relationships in such circumstances are being made worse by the constraints of lockdown. We are seeing issues arising from parents who are trying to maintain contact between separate households despite social distancing. There are cases where children have been retained by one parent and we have to make an urgent application to the court for their immediate return. Our family law team has cases where relationships between separated parents have become highly conflicted due to the stress of trying to cope with financial uncertainty, home schooling and maintaining a co-parenting arrangement. We have instances where separated parents need to be able to communicate to agree school applications for September, but can’t due to the impact of social distancing. We are having to help parents be creative in the way they contact their children - even if they can’t have direct face-to-face contact with them. This has included things like reading bedtime stories over FaceTime, video calling and trying to do some homeschooling with them.” Sue added: “I believe there will be further difficulties ahead when a vaccine to this terrible virus is found, as we anticipate more enquiries with parents disagreeing about whether or not their child should receive a vaccination. We have also seen an increase in divorce enquiries as people start to anticipate the relaxation of lockdown. Our team is working hard to help parents come to solutions which are workable for both parties and, most importantly, are in the best interests of their children. The End of Parties..... or the Start of New Traditions? From changes to working patterns, loss of child care, introduction of home schooling or a decrease in financial stability, everyone has had different battles to face this year due to lockdown restrictions. Whatever restrictions have been in place, one thing remains constant - our children still have birthdays. The majority of which have become accustomed to having parties surrounded by their friends and families. Many are too young to really understand the implications of Covid, and it can be difficult trying to explain to them why their friends and family are not celebrating with them on their special day. Here at Mossy Parties our business was obviously and sensibly been on hold. Hiring our reusable Party Kits and encouraging social gatherings will only be done when the government thinks it is safe to do so. So it got us thinking, how could we help birthday children feel extra special during this socially isolated time. Just because it’s not a ‘traditional’ birthday party, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and start some new traditions along the way. Even as restrictions lift, you may choose to have a low key Birthday this year. If so, why not try an alternative celebration - you never know you may even start a new family tradition! Here are a few of our favourite ideas to make the Birthday Star feel special, even if they are not surrounded by friends and family.
King or Queen of Birthdays
Give your birthday star the royal treatment, including throne, robe and crown! Use a hat out of an old Christmas cracker, decorate some cardboard, or go all out and crochet something that can be used every year. Add a robe - maybe from an old fancy dress costume or just a sheet from the laundry cupboard - treat it like an exquisite piece of clothing and their imagination will do the rest! Decorate a chair with colourful sheets and cushions for their throne. When they wake up tell them that their good behaviour means they are being crowned King or Queen of the house for the day. Present them with their crown and robe and tell them that their throne awaits. When they are on their throne they get to make the rules! Let them plan what to do for the day, what they want for dinner or even what they want their servants (yes you!) to wear whilst they are waiting upon them. Enjoy the fun - they may boss you around a bit and it may be a day full of the unexpected. Put aside your chores, don’t worry about the mess and see where their imagination takes them and you.
Theme Their Whole Day
Many people have themed parties. We all know someone who is Dino mad or will only wear pink and glittery things! Instead of having a themed party have a themed day. Start breakfast surrounded with their favourite toys. Cut their toast into shapes. Use bright bedding as tablecloths or backdrops. Cut out paper shapes or bunting and decorate the house. Get the whole family dressed up for the theme. Whether this is creating a stegasaurus mask for dad out of some cardboard boxes, or trying your hand at origami to make pirate hats for everyone. Google is our friend, search DIY fancy dress ideas and you will find a whole host of ideas for all levels of craft DIYer.
Birthday Bake Off
Unless you bake cakes regularly, the thought of baking a Birthday Cake can be quite stressful, and during these weird times you may not be able to get to the Supermarket to buy one easily. So why not make the Birthday cake part of the day? Hold a cake bake off in your own home, or if you have young children have a cupcake or cookie decorating competition. If you are particularly competitive and love to bake, extend the challenge to friends and family and share pictures online or via a video call. Birthday Star can pick the best looking baked goodies and announce the winner. A lovely way to incorporate an activity that provides a traditional(ish) element to a Birthday at the same time.
Community Fun
Ask the neighbours to put up something in their windows and go for a walk to see how many messages or pictures you can spot. It could be a picture in the window, chalk drawings on the paths, party decorations or even outdoor bunting. A great way to make sure the Birthday star feels special. How about booking an icecream van to visit your road? We love this idea that a local mum shared recently. By having a timeslot and letting the neighbours know, it kind of feels like a party, but everyone is outdoors and can keep their distance, plus you see people for just a short amount of time. You never know you may meet some new neighbours too!
Digital Surprise Party
A few months ago most of us didn’t have a clue what zoom was. But you know what, it (and many other video conferencing apps) have been a blessing for keeping in touch with friends and family. Arrange a convenient time for everyone, have your room set out for a party with decorations and food, and ask friends to do the same. Before you bring in your birthday star for their party meal, make sure everyone has managed to join your video call and ask them all to be quiet. Just like they are at a real surprise party and waiting for the birthday star to walk through the door. Get the birthday star to the table and reveal your phone, tablet or computer. Hopefully on cue, all their lovely friends and family will be able to shout SURPRISE, or sing Happy Birthday. Keep them on call whilst you all have your lunch or dinner, sharing a virtual dining table. People will talk over each other and there will be lots of hustle and bustle - just as it would be if you were all in the same room.
Personalised Birthday Messages
Instead of traditional birthday cards, why not ask family and friends to send a photo of themselves, with the message on the back. They can be displayed on the mantlepiece just like cards would be, and added into a scrapbook or photobook afterwards, reducing waste. If your Birthday Star loves to follow someone famous, try sending them a message on Twitter

or Instagram. You never know you may get a Birthday message back that would make their day. You could have a personalised video message, song or cartoon made by one of the many party entertainers that have taken to providing online services. Whether it is a rock ballad or a video from Elsa, there are numerous options available.
Escape Room
For older kids who like a bit of a challenge, a home based Escape Room could be just what you are looking for. Just be warned, they take a LOT longer to make than to solve! But if you have the time and energy to put the effort in, the feeling of achievement when your crew achieves the first task is worth it. If you don’t know where to start, take a look for inspiration online. We love Lock Paper Scissors who give you the blueprint to build your own. Digital Detox Sleepover
Get the whole family to camp out together in the garden or living room. Bring pillows and duvets, use sheets to make a fort between the sofas, have ‘midnight’ snacks and have a digital free night or story telling. If you have a tent and its good weather you can take the party into the garden. There are no rules for bedtime, the only rule is that the evening is family time only. No screens or phones allowed! For older children you could even add in some pampering time with a foot soak and homemade face masks. Or if you fancy going all out as restrictions lift, why not look at hiring a sleepover kit to include indoor tipis, fairy lights and more.
Birthday Quiz
If you have a family who likes a bit of healthy competition why not have a birthday quiz? This could be a traditional pub style quiz with question rounds - there are loads of examples available online at the moment - or you could create a family competition with a whole host of different events. Work together to come up with ideas - this could include an art competition, egg and spoon race, obstacle course, best fancy dress or guess this tune. You could even make your own medals and have a presentation ceremony at the end of the day. Don’t forget to include activities that the whole family can achieve to ensure everyone feels included! Whatever you decide to do, most importantly have fun yourself! Traditional parties and alternative celebrations can be hard work, but the more you enjoy yourself, the more the Birthday Star will do too. Pony Pals Wrekin is an equine facility, based at the foothills of the Wrekin. Therapy and Learning sessions are based on the Horse Boy method created by Rupert Isaacson in the USA. The Method now serves tens of thousands of families in more than 20 countries. It is the cutting edge in Equine Therapy/ Facilitated Learning for autism, ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, depression, and most other neuro-sensory diagnoses. Please give Wendy a ring to find out more. Like so many due to Covid-19, currently sessions are paused. As soon as social distancing requirements allow I will be restarting with sessions, and look forward to welcoming back existing clients, as well as new ones. The last few months have been unsettling and strange for everyone. The new normal we are all being encouraged to embrace is also going to present more challenges. For many children the return to school is going to open up more difficulties. Anxieties relating to peers, academia, and social engagement, are all areas I have been working with young people, their carers and schools prior to Covid-19. I see in the coming months these will be areas that many young people will need additional support with, and I am excited to be here and able to offer some support.
What is on offer at Pony Pals Wrekin
The correct physical environment + the correct human environment = Learning I aim to create the correct physical environment here at Pony Pals. I have a natural setting packed full of wholesome sensory triggers. I engage the children in movement in a variety of forms using the ponies. The human environment is just as important. I follow the Horse Boy/Movement Method guidelines, these being; follow the child, listen to the child, extrinsic motivation – using the child’s current interests to communicate and interest them. I am creative, flexible and child led in approach.
What I do:
Movement is created through playfulness, this also stimulates laughter. I use the ponies to create movement and to allow a child to be carried through both play and learning. When participating in equine sessions, I start the process working with sensory and calming aims. The children meet and handle the ponies from the ground, touching, grooming and washing the ponies. These are repetitive regular movements, which the ponies enjoy so they will physically demonstrate engagement, thereby rewarding the children’s efforts. I also incorporate breathing and relaxation periods. These are calming to the child’s nervous system. They regulate their breathing to that of the pony, and again receive a physical response and connection from the pony. These responses begin to develop trust and friendship between the child and the pony. Then when the child is ready, they move on board the pony. I use the time on board the pony in a number of ways; 1. To provide physical support. The child is sat on top of the pony and can feel them breathing and moving beneath them. 2. I use the pony to provide a safe, comfortable and unique relaxation environment. From on board we further develop the child’s ability to regulate their breathing. 3. The child continues with the repetitive regular movements of grooming whilst on board. 4. The pony and the child with time develop a friendship and trust, thereby enabling us to move them through walking and trotting with the pony, through new experiences and learning opportunities. 5. When we are all in agreement that the child is ready we introduce rocking the child and using deep pressure on the long limbs, whilst the child is on board the pony. The movement of the pony, the deep pressure, and the rocking of the child all produce the magic oxytocin. 6. Games, both fun and educational can be played whilst the child is mounted. They are receptive to learning due to the calming effect and the production of oxytocin. Throughout all this our dogs are also always around, offering further interactions, play, companionship and cuddles.

• Being in the water helps your baby move independently before they can crawl or walk. It’s a safe place for them to explore their balance, meaning they’ll become a lot more coordinated out of the water too – so less bumps as they learn to stand on their own two feet! • Cross-lateral movements (ones that cross the midline of the body) like reaching for a ball help with hand-eye coordination. • Activities like chasing toys (or grasping hold of them to give them a chew) in the pool help with finer motor skills; smaller movements that occur in the wrists, hands, fingers, feet and toes. • Swimming strengthens their heart and lungs as well as their arm, leg and neck muscles. • Bouncing and splashing in the water stimulates the vestibular system, aiding balance. • Baby swimming is proven to help with little one’s eating and sleeping patterns.
Intellectual and social benefits for your baby
• Those cross-lateral movements that we mentioned also build nerve pathways, helping the brain to store and retrieve information. • Research has indicated that baby swimming results in increased social, academic and personality development. • Increases confidence. The thrill of grasping a new skill or achieving something they’ve been working on will give your little one the confidence to try and learn new things. • The focused time in the water strengthens the bond between you and your baby, through holding them close and that skin-to-skin contact in the comforting warmth of the water. Your baby can smell you, feel your heartbeat, hear your breathing, which all helps calm and relax them (and you). This stimulation all reminds them of the security and safety of the womb. The warmth of the water is the perfect place to connect with your baby, away from the bustle of daily life. And it’s also a place for you to have fun too!
Keeping them safe
Drowning is sadly still one of the leading causes of death in children. There’s no better peace of mind than knowing that your little one can keep themselves safe both around and in the water. Introducing them to the water from birth will help prevent a fear developing later and make them feel confident should they ever be in an emergency situation.
Accessibility
Water is a leveller, a place where everyone can flourish and have fun in a non-competitive environment. Swimming has a whole range of benefits for babies and toddlers with disabilities and learning difficulties. As well as the physical rewards swimming brings (things like the buoyancy in the water helping to reduce pressure on the bones and joints), it also helps improve their confidence. By focusing on the achievements of your little ones and not their limitations, their confidence will grow and grow.

Water Babies lessons are temporarily on hold due to coronavirus restrictions. We will continue to follow the most up-to-date government guidelines and hope to be able to get back in the pool as soon as possible. End of the Rainbow Pyjama Drama North Shropshire are offering a package called ‘End of the Rainbow’ a 6-week online play programme for children 2-5 years in nurseries, schools and other family and parent clubs. As we near the ‘End of the Rainbow’ and lock down has eased we have seen some nurseries reopening although in a very different way of working than before, we are offering a 6-week ‘End of the Rainbow’ package that is exciting and will ignite the imagination (without toys) that is delivered online along with 60 extra activities to support the learning and continue the fun, this will help with your planning as I know a lot of your time will be making sure children are safe and cleaning! Each week we will meet at the end of the rainbow where I will deliver a new adventure to go on. We’ll meet Doris the Dragon, Merbaby, even crabby crab, but be careful he likes pinching bottoms! This can be delivered online where you can watch it over and over again. Making play a priority. These six magical sessions last approximately 30 mins and I whisk children off to a different imaginary land each time where they sing, dance, play games and, most importantly, do lots and lots of pretending! Supported by an activity pack of 60 extension tasks of games, rhymes and ideas for pretend play, children and staff alike can continue their adventures all week long. All this for £100.00. For our parents I will continue to run online sessions that are packed full of singing, dancing, storytelling and pretend, and are designed for children from 2 up to 7 years of age, I have some children who are older watching daily. Looking after the poorly tadpoles helps us develop empathy, singing with our friends around the campfire nurtures confidence. Working as a Doctor for the day teaches us lots of new words so develops our language and communication skills, and waiting in line to buy a rainbow flavoured ice-cream helps us to understand patience, as well as teaching us the importance of taking turns! Proud of our achievements Central Park Nursery celebrated its 25th birthday in may and after years of change, growth and improvement we could not be prouder. We understand the importance of choosing the right nursery for you and your child and the ongoing relationships which are an integral part to your child’s wellbeing. By being as flexible as possible with session times and lengths and by offering funded places we help to ensure all children can access nursery and the wonderful opportunities on offer. We believe in creating a challenging and exciting environment where children can thrive through learning and play while being supported by experienced, knowledgeable practitioners. We have good ties with local agencies to support the development of all children, even those with additional needs or who speak English as an additional language, and all staff attend regular training to ensure that they are in the best place to be providing children with support. A wide range of activities is always on offer following the EYFS as well as additional facilities and experiences such as the ball pool, forest school, outside areas and technological equipment. In our last Ofsted inspection, we gained a good and were awarded 5 stars from Environmental Health. Other recent accreditations also include Millies Mark, awarded for our outstanding First Aid knowledge and practise as well as everyone at nursery being fully Paediatric First aid trained. Special events and visitors throughout the year include: Police and Fire Service visits, Santa Claus, the Animal Man, Nursery Birthday Party, Bake Sales, Fun days, Harvest Festival and many charity events. We constantly strive to improve the service we are providing and have worked very hard to build positive relationships with parents and children over the last 25 years and we look forward to many more.
March 23rd 2020, a date Marie Davies, Manager of Central Park Nursery will never forget..... I was sat with my family the moment I heard Boris Johnson announce lockdown and although we had begun to prepare for this, it still came as a shock . What were we going to do? Who to call first? What will happen to nursery? All of these questions and many more swam around my head . The next morning, we let all parents know “We were closing, with little idea when we would reopen .” This was one phrase I had never dreamed of having to say in the 25 years nursery has been open . I am aware that not many nurseries have been able to open since due to restrictions, guidance and worries, however after 2 weeks of policy changes, planning, procedure reviews and risk assessments we reopened to key worker children on the 6th June 2020. Some days we have had no more than 4 children in and although , like many businesses we are currently running at a loss I have never felt so proud to offer care to these children . My wonderful team have pulled together, worked tirelessly and have been such a massive help to me , I am eternally grateful . Those staff who have not returned yet and are still furloughed have been completing training which will only add to their vast range of skills and knowledge , ready to return . The children in our care have adapted so well to the new measures put in place and to the changes around nursery and it has been a pleasure to have them here through this difficult time . We are also aware of the developmental impact this may have on some children who are not currently attending nursery and we have been sending out ideas for activities to parents as well as a “getting ready for school” checklist as we know that we may not see some of these children again who are going to ‘big’ school this coming September. We have taken many hits during this time , as has the sector as a whole , between changing guidance , lack of financial support and day to day work life it has not always been easy but we are here and we are very appreciative to those who have supported us through this time . So many things have been missed this year that we would often do to bring our children and our community together such as Bake Off’s, Food bank collections, visits to local care homes and much more and we cannot wait until we can start enjoying these things again . We recognise that the Covid-19 outbreak is going to have a deep and long-lasting impact on our sector as well as many others, but we truly hope that Central Park Nursery has been able to positively support families through this strange and sometimes difficult time and feel from the feedback we have received , that this is the case . Covid-19 has been an unprecedented time that we have never seen before and hopefully never will again . This situation is like a storm and at times extremely difficult to navigate , however as they say, storms are often followed by a rainbow.

colour me in ! Here at St John’s our children love exploring, making, finding out and being creative. Enjoyment is at the heart of life in our school and nursery as we want children to develop a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. During this period of ‘lockdown’, staff have been busy making sure that these opportunities remain a big part of the children’s home learning experience. Every day teachers put tasks, activities and games on our school website for children to explore at home. Alongside links to websites and worksheets are tasks and activities that involve cooking, painting, gardening or virtual team sports! Everyone from our youngest children to those moving on to ‘big school’ have been taking part when they can. Children have also been showcasing their amazing talents, skills and interests and sending photos in to us. What a brilliant way for us to really get to know what our children do as a hobby or their likes and dislikes! As we move towards welcoming a new group of children to St John’s and say goodbye to others, the end of this school year will certainly be very different for us all. We would like to wish all of our families a peaceful summer holiday. Stay safe, have fun and we are looking forwards to seeing you all soon. The impact of the pandemic on Severn Hospice was instant and far-reaching. Several months in, it remains a daily challenge. Operationally, our core services to families living with incurable illness in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales remain protected but this requires constant effort and As well as relying on your generosity to fund the work we do, we also rely enormous stamina from the whole hospice team. on people giving us their time for free – our brilliant volunteers. MEET NEW PEOPLE MAKE A DIFFERENCE HELP At the same time, our services to patients had to continue – the pandemic hasn’t changed the rate at which people are diagnosed with incurable illnesses. In that first week of change, we had just shy of 250 families in our care. We exist for them so our priority remained their needs and their safety. We had already made operational changes to limit the risk of COVID-19 coming into our buildings with restrictions on T: 01952 221350/01743 236565 visitors, asking all our volunteers to stay away, and extra hygiene precautions. We stopped our day services and clinics, where people being looked after at home by our Outreach community nurses come to our hospices for care. Four out of five of our patients are cared for at home and we used this community nursing model to its best to ensure patients were still getting the care they needed. We were not doing this in isolation, of course, and continued to work closely with our NHS partners who are at the real sharp end of the emergency. We agreed we would support the local hospitals by taking onto our wards any patient who did not have COVID-19 but needed end-of-life care. This helps ease any bed capacity issues at our two main hospitals. This is not a usual practice but exceptional times demand appropriate responses and the hospice recognises the role it has in the community and its important contribution to overall healthcare. Having lost our main sources of funding we had to adapt quickly. We are a resilient organisation and do what we can to help ourselves. We stretched our resources, cut our costs, diverted our reserves into cashflow, asked our landlords for rent waivers and have been grateful for all the government support packages we were eligible to apply for. The community’s reaction and thought for us has been absolutely fantastic throughout. As we have adapted our services, the public too has changed the way it supports us. When we asked people to ‘support us from their sofa’ the response was universally positive. We’ve had more people join our weekly lottery and more donations made online. Our first ever virtual events – quizzes via Facebook featuring footballer Joe Hart – raised more than £5,000, with thousands more raised by sports clubs organisingtheir own virtual events, which included support from around the globe. One family even donated £120,000 from the sale of their house to us! But it’s not just been financial support that’s made a difference – and warmed our hearts. We’ve had donations of PPE (much-needed and very welcome in the face of a national shortage) and care packages of hand-creams, sweets, and chocolates to thank hospice staff. When we reopened our first shop in June and started accepting donated items for sale, the community were there for us again, so much so we had to introduce an appointments system for charity bags; we were being literally swamped with kindness. But as fortunate and grateful as we are to have such generous and loyal supporters I can’t pretend it will fill the fundraising gap. We have been dealt a devastating blow by this virus and we will face daily operational and financial challenges for a considerable period of time yet. We can’t stop caring and we will always need the public’s help to fulfil that commitment, now more than ever. LEND A HAND IN OUR SHOPS
Inside Out Learning is a small business based in Shrewsbury. We promote learning through play-based activities that are underpinned with science, nature and wellbeing themes and run most of our sessions from a small woodland garden at the back of a fully equipped hall. We provide pre-school sessions, stay-and-play sessions and holiday workshops for children aged 5-8 years old, and we spend as much time outdoors as we can. We also support our local primary school and two local pre-schools with outdoor learning sessions. I'm a mum of two, and a fully qualified teacher with 15 years' teaching experience in a variety of early years settings and primary schools; all rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. I'm also a Forest School leader. I set up Inside Out Learning just over a year ago to give myself more freedom to teach in a creative, holistic way. Through my business I have tried to use all the great things I have learned from so many great educationalists, teachers, TAs and children and get rid of all the bureaucracy that started to spoil the enjoyment of the job for me. Throughout the school holidays we open our woodland garden and community hall to children aged 5-8 years. In this lovely little setting children get opportunities to design, build, investigate, experiment and tinker around. Children are given lots of freedom to follow their own interests in different areas set up for open-ended learning. A particular favourite is the woodwork area which is set up in the garden. The children use real tools like saws, hammers and drills; they are first taught how to use the tools safely and then encouraged to follow their own ideas. Most children love this way of learning as it provides intrinsic motivation and high levels of engagement. The children are able to make dens, swing on the tree swing, enjoy time around the campfire and make lots of delightful treats in the ‘Mud Kitchen’. As with so many other small businesses we have had a really difficult time recently. We are still closed due to the current coronavirus restrictions but are hoping to re-open in August for holiday outdoor workshops and stay-and-play sessions. Animal Adoption launches at Park Hall Farm Park Hall Countryside Experience in Oswestry closed their gates to the Covid-19 pandemic on the 18th March. Since then the family-run farm has continued caring for their livestock and making improvements around the farm, while they wait for the news that they can welcome back visitors. After receiving enquiries about animal adoption from members of the public missing the furry and feathered friends at Park Hall, joint owner – director Richard Powell asked their social media following whether being able to adopt the farm animals would be of interest - and he was overwhelmed by the positive response. The adoption scheme is now live on their website at www.parkhallfarm.co.uk where you can choose from bronze, silver and gold level packages. They are offering adoption for animal groups rather than individual animals to ensure every animal gets access to the support. Customers can choose from alpacas, sheep, pigs, goats, ponies, parrots, rabbits and guinea pigs. Richard Powell commented, “I think our friendly farm animals have been missing our visitors just as much as the visitors have missed them! We wanted to provide a way that the public could feel part of the farm and support our wonderful animals. We think it is the perfect gift for animal lovers or young aspiring farmers, and it could even spread a little joy to those people who can’t have a pet at home. “I really hope that all our amazing visitors are able to come back and see us very soon, and in the meantime consider being part of what makes this farm so special.”

Battlefield forms a part of the Albrighton Estate and freshly homemade and locally produced food is at the heart of what we do both in the farm shop and the café, while providing a relaxed and friendly visitor destination where everyone is welcome. During these challenging times Battlefield has adapted and while operating in slightly different ways, has not changed its focus on ensuring that our customers continue to have access to quality, fresh locally-produced food without disruption. Where customers are unable to leave home and visit us, we now provide a delivery service, ensuring that a wide range of our shop and butchery products reach your doorstep. We have also introduced a Sunday lunch delivery service. Here our chefs cook a selection of Sunday roasts and deserts that can be delivered to your home each Sunday (within a 5 mile radius of the shop). In both cases we also offer an ‘order & collection’ service, we can therefore have everything ready for you on arrival at Battlefield for collection. Further services are also in the planning that will be introduced during the course of this publication and while our two cafes remain closed at the time of writing we intend to have these operating again in accordance with new guidelines as soon as we are allowed. SYT CONNECT is a new virtual mentoring project aimed at engaging SYT students by improving their performance skills using real time directing, sharing filmed performances and offering feed-back with other SYT members. It will be used as both a teaching opportunity and performance platform in the virtual world. Initially the Senior Students will learn a Shakespeare Monologue, they will film/record their first interpretation and send it to SYT Directors, Maggie and Lisa. An SYT faculty member will then be assigned to work with a student using a safe video chat platform. As the monologue improves, a new version will be filmed and shared with the group. SYT Juniors will be given the opportunity to work on a digital ‘song’ project, Beowulf. Students have been asked to record sections of the script, which will then be edited together to create an audio score by a senior student. SYT Beginners, our youngest group, will be offered the chance to experiment with their own toys, collectibles or household objects in an exercise we are fondly calling ‘Playtime Poetry’. Over the next six months SYT will collate the material from all the groups to create a YouTube Channel that will be a legacy to the project created during the COVID19 pandemic. We will require support and help from our website designer, Virtual Shropshire to enable this final presentation. At this time it is difficult to imagine when we can return to regular workshops and a rehearsal process as we knew it. For now SYT is excited to deliver drama tuition in a virtual world. To ensure every student and staff member has access to the project we have been able to purchase iPads with the Shropshire Council Emergency Arts Fund. If families require any help with filming or video chat we can provide technical support. We will follow all nhs.co.uk/coronavirus and gov.uk/coronavirus guidelines. All sterilisation precautions will be taken; supplying anti-bacterial wipes to be used before and after use of any of the shared technical items. When we can eventually return to our workspace at The Hive in Shrewsbury, students will be able to use the camera skills they have learned along with their new performing techniques to further their skills in future productions. Perhaps some time in the future these self-filming techniques and virtual teaching methods will be part of a ‘new’ performance art program.

The New Normal for Music Lessons It’s been an interesting few months for the Music Heroes tutors who would normally spend their days visiting local primary and secondary schools; delivering one to one, small group and whole class instrument lessons. Outside of school hours, we were all busy with private lessons in our own studios and in students’ homes. As with most things in life following the COVID-19 pandemic, all of that has changed. We had to quickly get to grips with online teaching. At the outset there were hours of research into the best online platform; then followed many more hours experimenting with microphones, webcams and screen positions! In addition, new safeguarding policies were drawn up along with guidance for parents and students on how to get the most out of their lessons through a screen! It’s not always been straight forward and there has been the odd occasion where the good old internet just hasn’t been up to the job but, on the whole; online lessons have been a huge success. For both tutors and students, online lessons feel “normal” now and if there is one thing we can take out of this crisis, it’s that a new way of teaching has opened up for us. We can now confidently accept students from any part of the world! We don’t know when we will be allowed to teach in schools again or whether it will be acceptable to have students in our studios again any time soon. For the time being, we will continue to teach online. We’re taking on new students and once measures are relaxed, we look forward to meeting those students in person (or not, if they would prefer to continue with online lessons). I’m happy to report that graded exams will be taking place, with social distancing measures, in July. We have been amazed to see so many of our students flourish under these unusual circumstances. Many have been able to practise more than usual and that is evident in the progress that has been made between lessons. Some students have even booked in for several lessons a week! The most amazing thing for us as tutors has been to be able see the faces of our students and their parents. Keeping in touch and being able to have some contact with the outside world, even if just for 30 minutes a week, has been so beneficial to students; offering something familiar for our young students; many of whom have struggled with all the changes to routine. Also, parents have reported that being able to observe or listen in to our lessons has given them a better understanding of what is expected of the students and how they can help them practise in between lessons.

Most of our tutors are professional musicians and restrictions have, of course, prevented them from gigging, However, we did take the opportunity to create a music video, and recorded our own lockdown cover of Hey Jude. This can be found on our youtube channel and has been very popular with our students. We’ve also been uploading demonstration videos of the songs that we teach. These too, can be found on youtube.

There will be a limited number of tickets available for each show, which will take place at the West Mid Showground. The drive-in experience is the latest trend in the events world, following the rise of drive-in raves in Germany. Shropshire Festivals’ Director of Fun, Beth Heath, said after reading about the ‘Autodiscos’ she decided it was the perfect model to get Shropshire out socialising again. She comments, “The public have endured a challenging few months of being kept cooped up at home so we decided it was about time there was a socially distanced, safe way to have a night out. ‘The Most Spectacular Show’ will be a brilliant night out for the whole family. It will give kids an incredible live experience. Expect some old fashioned, feelgood, safe fun!” Street food and soft drinks will be available and delivered straight to your car in the style of a luxury drive-through. Beth continues, “We know that the Government’s advice could change at any time, so we are guaranteeing full refunds in the event we are not able to go ahead with the concert.
