GOLF IN THE LOWCOUNTRY 4

Charleston is widely recognized as the birthplace of much of today’s American lifestyle. From cooking ... to architecture ... to the arts, Charleston has been the entry point for a quality of life potpourri that defines our country and the modern South. Yet it is the Lowcountry’s standing in the realm of golf that is most revered by practitioners of the gentleman’s game. Historical records show golf balls and wooden clubs being shipped to Charleston as early as 1743; and early manifests identify visitors to Scotland as returning with clubs in tow in 1759. In fact, the fore bearers of modern golf club members first met on Harleston’s Green for a lively round in 1786, and residents and visitors alike have been challenging local tracks ever since. The reason for our love affair with golf is simple ... the Charleston area lends itself to outdoor recreation. Lowcountry courses encompass a wide array of topography and challenges. From the windswept dunes of seaside links to narrow inland courses bounded by moss

covered oaks and meandering creeks, the Charleston area presents a unique challenge to golfers of all abilities and aptitudes. Some of the finest instructors in the world call Charleston home and its numerous training facilities are second to none. The availability of top notch caddie programs provides a special experience that enhances any golf adventure ... while having the added benefit of dramatically improving one’s scores! Names like Kiawah, Seabrook, and Wild Dunes have established their position in the hierarchy of American golf. And with each

passing day new award winning courses join this esteemed group. Now is the time to add your name to the list of players who have accepted the challenge of playing the finest courses in the world. Now is the time to ask if you and your mates are up to the task. But the real question is “Do you want to make history?”

A hole does not have to be long to be lovable: A collection of the most coveted Par 3’s in the Lowcountry

8

Golfers should leave their drivers in their bags when firing at the pin on these three-shot signatures. A stellar short game is needed to conquer this collection of tiny holes, which are just as challenging as they are breathtaking. KIAWAH ISLAND GOLF RESORT - OCEAN COURSE 17th hole, 223 yards: The site of multiple dramatic splashes during the 2012 PGA Championship, this tee shot over a large pond is sure to rattle nerves. Golfers should refrain from aiming too far from the drink, as a cluster of intimidating bunkers guards the opposite side of the green. If one fails to avoid the dangers of this hole, there is no need to stress. A quick look ahead at the glistening ocean is all players need to melt away any frustrations they may have caused themselves.

DUNES WEST GOLF & RIVER CLUB 17th hole, 169 yards: In addition to a shiny white ball, golfers should be on the lookout for sunbathing alligators, which are known to lurk in the pond-side green. A 2-putt is deemed impressive on this tricky two-tiered green, so one shouldn’t hesitate to give it a second look.

THE LINKS AT STONO FERRY 14th hole, 154 yards: The name of the golf course is best explained through this signature 14th hole; whose tee box sits on the site of the original ferry landing for the plantation. Appropriately named “The Crossing,” goods were once transported across the Stono River to Johns Island at this very location. In addition to aiming for par, golfers should be sure to soak in the rich history and magnificent views that accompany one of the Lowcountry’s most famed holes.

10

THE GOLF CLUB AT WESCOTT PLANTATION - OAK FOREST 8th hole, 189 yards: Considered the most picturesque hole on the course, one should pay particular attention to aim on this one. A lake running all the way down the left side of the green shouldn’t pose a problem with ideal aim and a flawless swing.

LEGEND OAKS PLANTATION 8th hole, 148 yards: Hitting the green is easier said than done on this hole, which requires a daring carry over a deadly pond. For the less confident, there is a bail-out area on the right side, where players can choose to lay-up their shot. Pro’s advise “if you can hit the bail-out area you might as well shoot for the green- and hope for the best.” A true do or die hole.

WILD DUNES RESORT - LINKS COURSE

11th hole, 224 yards: One should make sure to include Wheaties in their breakfast and whip out their driver for this high distance Par 3. For those who boast talent in being able to out-drive their friends, herein lies the chance to show off those skills.

12th hole, 169 yards: Surrounded by native grass that glows purple in the early fall, this hole is said to play shorter than the yardage. The severely undulating green makes two-putting a tricky test, one that requires a correct read to ace.

SHADOWMOSS PLANTATION GOLF CLUB

PATRIOTS POINT

16 hole, 203 yards: Fronted by water, with a deep green heavily guarded by front right and back left bunkers, this hole is widely considered a favorite among players. Lush Bermuda fairways and beautiful meandering forests make this course the perfect spot for the perfect shot. th

SEABROOK ISLAND GOLF CLUB OCEAN WINDS 15th hole, 161 yards: Fantastic views of the marshland surround this hole, highlighting the hub of what makes golf and life on Seabrook so special. A par on this one is sure to boost the ego, with a tiny green and an immense oak tree that has been known to skew many players’ alignment.

17th hole, 130 yards: Consistently ranked the “Best Par-3 in the Lowcountry,” this hole’s island green is anchored right in the Charleston Harbor. Spectacular views of Shem Creek, Fort Sumter, and the downtown skyline make this hole a must-play for all avid golfers in the Lowcountry.

RIVERTOWNE COUNTRY CLUB 17th hole, 152 yards: Gusting winds off the marshes lining Horlbeck Creek and the Wando River makes proper club selection a necessity on this signature hole. The horizontal green however, provides a forgivingly large target, pinching in the middle to mimic an hourglass shape.

This 18-hole championship course is the only Rees Jones Design in Charleston open to the public. The course is sculpted out of lowcountry marshland, with the cool ocean breezes creating different playing conditions between the morning and afternoon rounds. 100-year old oaks dripping with Spanish moss and Palmetto palms will make golfers forget they are less than 10 miles from Charleston. With greens that roll true, a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and superb playing conditions year round, it is not surprising that Rees Jones calls Charleston National “one of the elite venues in golf.”

This popular Arthur Hills design is a 6,593-yard, par-71 semi-private course with plenty of Lowcountry character. The course is a hit with local golf enthusiasts, who praise its pristine condition. Blessed with an unusually rolling terrain, this is a challenging course with lots of characteristic Arthur Hills style.

12

Coosaw Creek offers a fun and fair game for the novice while challenging the more experienced golfer with a variety of longer drives, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards.

Located on the site of the historic Lexington Plantation is Charleston’s nationally acclaimed golf facility. Ranked by both GOLF magazine and Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Resort Course,” this Arthur Hills design is a diamond. The Dunes West Golf Club was also voted as one of “America’s Best” by Golfweek and played host to the nationally televised Amoco-Centel Championship. This par-72, 6,800-yard masterpiece is one of the best you will ever play.

Proclaimed by many long-time guests as their favorite course on the island, Cougar Point is the resort’s Gary Player design. This par-72 layout was named “Golf Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association in 2007. It features holes playing directly along broad expanses of tidal marsh, offering panoramic views of the Kiawah River and acres of needlerush and spartina grass. Cougar Point is designed to championship standards that will challenge the scratch player while providing an enjoyable round for players of all skill levels.

The Dunes West Golf Club is truly a world-class golf experience. And remember, it’s not whether you win or lose, but where you play the game that counts.

Opened in 1989, Oak Point was soon recognized as one of “America’s Best” by Golfweek Magazine. Designed by noted southern architect, Clyde Johnston, Oak Point was built on the grounds of an old indigo and cotton plantation. The lay of the land dictated a design that is reminiscent of Scottish golf, incorporating pot bunkers and wide, windswept fairways interspersed with numerous mounding and subtle elevation changes. Numerous vistas of fresh water lagoons, winding creeks and open marsh make Oak Point as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as it is challenging.

Selected as the host site for the 2012 PGA Championship, The Ocean Course is one of Pete Dye’s most superb designs. It first received worldwide attention as the host of the dramatic 1991 Ryder Cup Matches. In 2007, it hosted the Senior PGA Championship. This 7,356-yard course offers spectacular views along two and one half miles of Atlantic Ocean.

14

The superbly manicured fairways and greens challenge professionals and amateurs alike. The Ocean Course was ranked No. 4 on Golf Digest magazine’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and No. 5 on GOLF magazine’s list of Top 100 Courses You Can Play.

Fresh from a summer-long complete renovation led by course designer Tom Fazio, Osprey Point reopened October 1, 2014 with the greens, tees and fairways converted to Paspalum, the same type of grass that is on The Ocean Course. The greens were returned to their original size and contours, all of the bunkering was renovated; nine new forward tees were added while existing tees were laser leveled. Additionally, the 2nd & 18th fairways were recontoured. Tom Fazio didn’t change the course, just rejuvenated and updated Osprey Point to return it to a gem that so many have enjoyed over the years.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus not long after he worked with Pete Dye on Harbour Town, Turtle Point has a similar look and feel of its sister course on Hilton Head Island. It features a low profile design that takes advantage of the island’s natural contours and dune ridges. Turtle Point flows seamlessly through maritime forests of hardwoods and palmettos, along backwater lagoons and finally to three spectacular holes directly along the Atlantic Ocean. Turtle Point opened in 1981 and was totally renovated in 2000. Subtle greens demand a keen eye and deft touch. The course has hosted many amateur and professional tournaments including the 1990 PGA Cup Matches.

Cut through the beautiful Lowcountry, Legend Oaks is thirty minutes from Charleston on scenic Highway 61 and located on the site of a former rice plantation in the historic “plantation district” between Charleston and Summerville. Uniquely surrounded by the natural beauty of 300 year old majestic live oak trees and a whole host of Lowcountry wildlife. This course will challenge every level of player.

Located across the harbor just eight minutes from downtown Charleston, the famous Patriots Point Links offers all golfers resort quality golf. A Lowcountry tradition, this historic course features plush fairways, immaculate greens, unmatched service and breathtaking panoramic views of Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter. The Par-3 17th hole is perennially awarded “The Best Par-3 in the Lowcountry.”

GOLF magazine Travel Editor Brian McCallen likened the approach to the Legend Oaks’ plantation-style clubhouse, through an avenue of 300-year-old live oaks, to the drive up Magnolia Drive leading to Augusta National.

With the most historic and scenic views in Charleston, Patriots Point Links is a “must play” for Charleston area residents and visitors alike. Luxury accommodations adjacent to the golf course are also available at The Cottages on Charleston Harbor.

Begin your golf vacation at Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club and experience the reasons why Golf Digest praises Shadowmoss as “the best golf value in Charleston”. Carved from an original Charleston Plantation, Shadowmoss offers immaculate Champion ultradwarf greens and has five sets of tees that make it enjoyable for all golfers.

Set amidst Lowcountry breezes from the Intracoastal Waterway and centuries-old live oaks, The Links at Stono Ferry features the most unforgettable round of golf in Charleston. In an area known for its rich history, the revolutionary Battle of Stono Ferry was fought on these grounds in 1779. The war is still being fought today, only this time it is over 18 of Charleston’s best golf holes. Known for its back nine heroics, daring shots along the Intracoastal Waterway, breathtaking views and the intimidating island green 18th hole, this Ron Garl design is the one course you must play while visiting. The Links at Stono Ferry is the total golf experience. Come. Enjoy.

Located just 12 miles from downtown and 5 miles from I-526, Shadowmoss is convenient to Kiawah Island and easily accessible from anywhere in the Charleston area. Shadowmoss is located off of Historic Hwy. 61 on the way to some of the most famous plantations in the Charleston area.

The Golf Club at Wescott Plantation is the Lowcountry’s only golf course to offer 27 holes featuring three distinctly different nine holes to challenge every club in your bag.

Another Fazio masterpiece, the Harbor Course continues the Links’ tradition of golf excellence, but calls for a completely different style of play. With a par of 70, this challenging 6,359 yard course requires accurate shot making and a thoughtful plan of attack.

Course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan designed this 27hole course with his trademark environmental sensitivity. Set among centuries old live oaks and built on one of the Lowcountry’s oldest plantations, the design captures the traditional flavor of low flowing earthworks and classic bunkering. Each hole is separated and framed by vegetation and natural wetlands. Discover why both the Nationwide and Hooters Pro Golf Tours have chosen Wescott Golf Club for tournament events. 20

Considered by Fazio as one of his “favorites,” the Harbor Course is a true test of golf. Each nine has a cohesive variety of short and long holes, some bordering the Intracoastal Waterway, known to east coast golfers as the world’s longest water hazard.

The Charleston area is legendary for its ability to turn an evening meal or a round of drinks into a memorable occasion. Much like Lowcountry golf courses are built around the water and its surrounding terrain, the opportunity to sample outstanding surf and turf menus abound in the area’s many restaurants, pubs and dining venues.

The 19th hole is hallowed ground for every golfer. It is where the day’s round is replayed, the shots that were

missed become slightly less troublesome, and the shots that were made become almost mythical.

DINING The words “dining” and “Charleston” are synonyms. In recent years the Lowcountry has become one of the country’s - and more likely the world’s - premier destinations for epicurean pleasures. Terms like “farm to table”, “sustainability”, and “buy local” are hallmarks of the Charleston area dining scene and these innovations have caught the eye of food lovers everywhere. The annual BB&T Charleston Wine + Food Festival is a draw for thousands of visitors, and the restaurant options across the community are endless. Naturally, seafood and southern cooking are mainstays of the local dining scene, but our wide array of award winning chefs specialize in dishes that range from Spanish inspired tapas style meals to the rich hues and sauces of white table cloth French cuisine. The most interesting question for golf groups and locals is not whether there is a restaurant to suit one’s palate, but how does a community like Charleston have so many amazing options in such close proximity?
