President’s Message

March has thrown us for a loop! It’s times like these that we are reminded of how important it is to come “together” as a community, even if we’re all six feet apart or in our individual homes. With the extension of our stay-at-home orders through April, we will be holding our first remote Altrusa meeting this month (more details to come). At this month’s business meeting, we will be selecting projects for our new Service Plan. This is Add an Altrusan month. As you scroll through your social media feeds or do community service,

be on the lookout for potential Altrusans. Virtual members can live in any part of our District: California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Baja California, or Sonora!

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate action of its members.” – Coretta Scott King

Service Projects Shauna Stokes, Lillian Leopold, Chairs

Award Applications and Grant Application Submitted We submitted three service project award applications to District Eleven for the following projects: Mamie L. Bass Community Service Award“Serving Students Facing Basic Needs Insecurity”, our Southwestern College JAG Kitchen project; Letha H. Brown Literacy Award - “Reading and Celebrating at Mi Escuelita Pre-School”, our Read Across America Day, and donations of books and supplies; and Nina Fay Calhoun International Project Award – “Days for Girls: Breaking Down Barriers to Education for Girls”, our time and funds spent assisting the Escondido DFG group. We also submitted a grant application to the Altrusa International Foundation for $4,000 for supplies and equipment for the soon-to-berenovated children’s room at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. This project is called “Improving “Sense-sational” Literacy for Children”.

The Club Foundation Board met on March 31 and voted to provide $1,500 from unspent Foundation service project funds to the Southwestern College Foundation (SCF) for food gift cards via the JAG Kitchen food pantry. As Carmen Richardson, Foundation Treasurer, wrote in the accompanying letter with the check to the SCF, “As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, we recognize the financial impact for many of your students and heed the call to provide immediate support to the best of our ability at this time. We appreciate your hard work and effort at raising awareness for your food pantry program, a service critical for your student’s emotional, as well as physical, health. We are proud to support the food pantry program.” This donation is in addition to the $2,000 of our community service funds for needed equipment for the JAG Kitchen. altrusacv.org

Altrusa 2020 “Just Imagine Fundraiser Surpasses Their Goal By Altrusa Club of Chula Vista - March 9, 2020

On Saturday, February 22, the Altrusa Club of Chula Vista, Inc. Foundation held their annual Just Imagine fundraiser at the Paradise Point Resort, surpassing their goal in support of educational programs, reaching over $36,000! A good time was had by all kicking off Mardi Gras dancing to live music from the Euphoria Brass Band, winning awesome prizes, laughing at the jokes of the Masters of Ceremonies, Michael Monaco and Betty Waznis, and building friendships. Altrusa gives special thanks to the following sponsors, donors, and event organizers: Baldwin and Sons, Aplomb Media, Eaton Escrow, Dream Big Real Estate Ventures, Inc., Seacoast Commerce Bank, Copy Link, Carmen Richardson, Helyn Sloan, Shauna Stokes, Jeri Gustafsson, Eva Salas, and Patti Rahiser.
