Lake Eola swans stricken with bird flu, GOP state senators vote to lower age requirement to purchase AR-15 that was raised after Parkland school shooting, judge halts release of Epstein records and other news you may have missed.

» Orlando officials confirm Lake Eola swans are dying from bird flu

City of Orlando officials confirmed last week that several birds at Lake Eola Park had been infected with avian influenza, also known as bird flu. The announcement came after officials found several birds had died at the park. Four swans have been found dead in the past two weeks, two of which, a Royal Mute swan and an Australian black swan, were confirmed to have died from the virus. Officials are still waiting on results from the other two deceased swans. Officials recommend visitors and pets at Lake Eola Park continue to avoid direct contact with the birds and avoid contact with any excrement. They also recommend removing shoes that may be contaminated when entering homes and cleaning them off. Bird flu is highly contagious and almost always fatal in birds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say bird flu viruses usually do not affect humans, but there have been rare cases in which the virus has spread to people and caused flu-like symptoms.

» Florida Senate backs ban on ‘fake meat’

The Florida Senate last Thursday approved a wide-ranging bill that would ban the sale of what Gov. Ron DeSantis has described as “fake meat.” The Republican-controlled Senate voted 26-10 to pass the bill (SB 1084), which would make changes related to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The part of the bill that has drawn the most attention is a proposed ban on the sale and manufacture of cultivated meat, also sometimes called lab-grown meat. Bill sponsor Jay Collins, R-Tampa, said research over time might show cultivated meat is viable, but right now “there’s no guarantee of safety for the consumer.” Sen. Jason Pizzo, D-Sunny Isles Beach, said federal regulations are in place for cultivated meat. The bill, which is supported by state cattle and poultry associations, would make it a second-degree misdemeanor to sell or manufacture lab-grown meat. The bill also would prevent local governments from regulating electric-vehicle charging stations.

» Florida Republicans vote to lower minimum age to purchase AR-15s

While the issue has not moved forward in the Senate, the Florida House on Friday passed a controversial bill that would lower the minimum age from 21 to 18 to buy rifles and shotguns. The Republican-controlled House voted 76-35 along almost straight party lines to pass the bill (HB 1223), which would reverse a decision that raised the minimum age after the 2018 mass shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people. Federal law bars people under 21 from buying handguns. Democrats repeatedly cited the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting as they opposed the bill. Rep. Robin Bartleman, D-Weston, said lawmakers should not “renege” on a promise the Legislature made when it passed the higher minimum age as part of a broader school-safety bill. “Shame on us,” Bartleman said. “We told the citizens of Florida that we were going to protect them.” But bill sponsor Bobby Payne, R-Palatka, pointed to Second Amendment rights and people needing to defend themselves. “I’m not worried about our schools. Our schools are safe in Florida. We’ve heard it was the gold standard,” Payne said. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, has repeatedly said the Senate doesn’t have a similar bill, meaning the proposed age change will not pass during this year’s legislative session. Four Republicans joined Democrats in voting down HB 1223.

» Controversial bill banning ‘identity politics’ from teacher prep programs heads to Senate

A bill that seeks to keep “identity politics” out of teacher-preparation programs is ready for consideration by the full Senate. The Republican-dominated Rules Committee on Monday approved the proposal (SB 1372), sponsored by GOP Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill. It has been one of the most contested education bills of the 2024 legislative session. Under the bill, teacher-preparation programs at colleges and universities could not teach “identity politics” or be “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political and economic inequities.” Senate bill sponsor Ingoglia said the measure is an effort to ensure “future teachers who are taking teacher-prep courses in colleges and universities are not mandated to take classes or curricula that push theories” that are prohibited in the bill. But Kara Gross, with the ACLU of Florida, criticized the measure as a “government censorship” bill. “The First Amendment protects our right to read and learn and debate and discuss popular

and unpopular views, regardless of whether they align with the viewpoints of the majority in power,” Gross said. A similar House bill (HB 1291) is ready for consideration by the full House.

» Judge halts Jeffrey Epstein records, hours after DeSantis signed bill to release them

Hours after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill to allow the release of grand jury testimony about the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a Palm Beach County circuit judge Thursday denied a public records request for the documents — but laid out a blueprint for how the information could be available after the new law takes effect July 1. The bill, which lawmakers recently passed, is aimed at making available records presented to a Palm Beach County grand jury in 2006 about an investigation into Epstein, a wealthy financier who allegedly sexually abused young women at his Palm Beach mansion. Through a deal approved by prosecutors in 2007, Epstein sidestepped federal charges and agreed to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges, including procuring a minor for sex. The Palm Beach Post’s parent company, CA Florida Holdings LLC, in 2019 filed a lawsuit against Palm Beach County officials seeking access to evidence, testimony and reports presented to the grand jury. The new law, signed last Thursday morning by DeSantis at the Palm Beach police department, expands an exception to a prohibition on the disclosure of testimony or evidence received by grand juries. An order issued later that Thursday by Circuit Judge Luis Delgado denied the Post’s records request, but detailed how he could reconsider the issue after the new law formally takes effect this summer. Delgado’s ruling gave a variety of reasons for the denial under current law, saying he and two previous judges on the case had to weigh factors to determine whether releasing the records “would further justice.”

Bipartisan bill allowing more teen labor on construction sites nears finish line after clearing the Senate with unanimous support

Abill that would ease restrictions on the kind of work 16- and 17-year-olds can do on construction sites is nearly on its way to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis, after picking up bipartisan, bicameral support in the Republican-dominated Legislature.

The controversial legislation, written by lobbyists for home builders and construction contractors, passed the Florida Senate unanimously on Friday, and passed the House earlier this week in a 84-30 vote with some bipartisan support.

Not a single Democrat voted against the legislation (HB 917/SB 460) in the Senate (with Democratic Sen. Jones absent), while GOP Rep. Mike Beltran was the only Republican lawmaker in either chamber to cross party lines to vote it down.

Orlando-area state Rep. Johanna López, a Democrat, even co-sponsored the bill exactly nine minutes ahead of its passage in the House on Wednesday.

Supporters of the legislation, including a number of Democratic lawmakers, have argued that the intent of the bill has been taken out of context, and that the bill has been incorrectly labeled a “child labor bill.”

“People take a snapshot of a bill, a bill number, and then they can never be told something else along the process,” said Sen. Jason Pizzo (D-Hollywood) on Friday, “even [if] it goes through material or substantive changes.”

Pizzo, like his Democratic colleague Sen. Davis before him, all but begged Simon to give the public a reason not to lambaste him and other Democrats for voting up the bill.

“If you’d just walk through what it was and what it is today? Please, thank you,” he said, putting down his microphone in exasperation.

The legislation does in fact affect Florida’s child labor laws (not teen labor, but literally “child labor”) by narrowly targeting restrictions on hazardous work performed by minors. Under existing state law, minors are prohibited from working on “any scaffolding, roof, superstructure, residential or nonresidential building construction, or ladder above 6 feet.”

The legislation as originally filed would have gutted that restriction for minors aged 16 and older. However, following public pressure, the legislation was amended by the bill sponsors to largely maintain that prohibition.

The legislation has also been amended to clarify that minors are not legally permitted to work on commercial construction sites — only residential ones — and that employers are barred from forcing minors to perform any work that would conflict with federal child labor standards under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), or any other federal rule.

Bill opponents, however, argue that the bill could still conflict with federal law due to a federal prohibition against allowing minors to work on any roofing job, regardless of how far off the ground they are working.

Furthermore, because federal law specifically covers only organizations or enterprises that do more than $500,000 a year in business (with limited exceptions), the nonpartisan Florida Policy Institute estimates that thousands of construction contractors in the state of Florida would not be bound by the standards of the FLSA as referenced in the Florida legislation. The Florida Policy Institute has been a firm opponent of the legislation both as filed and as amended.

Rich Templin, director of politics and public policy for the Florida AFL-CIO — the state’s largest federation of labor unions — similarly believes this “loophole” (as the Florida Policy Institute has framed it) could unnecessarily put older teens at risk on potentially dangerous work sites.

He pointed out that under the bill, minors are required to obtain the most base-level OSHA certification (OSHA 10) to work in construction and must work under the supervision of an adult at least 21 years of age or older who has similarly completed the 10-hour training course required for that certification.

But workers in the trades have argued this isn’t good enough. And it won’t keep older teens safe on the job.“So we have inexperienced people with little to no training supervising

16- and 17-year-olds on some of the most dangerous work sites in the state,” Templin told Orlando Weekly over the phone after the final vote Friday.

Construction drives the highest number of unlicensed activity complaints in the state, and research has found that it is the deadliest industry for youth nationwide, behind agriculture.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, construction is also one of the most common industries in which child labor violations occur already, in addition to wage theft — which the state of Florida does not have a good track record on combating.

Then there’s the federal prohibition on minors working “on or about a roof,” which Templin argues isn’t fully clear of conflict with the legislation as it is currently written.

“It doesn’t clarify that 16- and 17-year-olds can’t be on a roofing site,” said Templin, which he says “is problematic, at best.”

A state law enacted in Iowa last year, similarly targeting hazardous worksite protections for children in the workforce, was flagged by U.S. Department of Labor representatives for conflicting with federal law.

Because Florida has literally only seven state employees dedicated to the task of enforcing Florida’s child labor protections, as of December, the task of protecting children on the job largely falls on the federal Wage and Hour division and OSHA, which similarly have a limited enforcement capacity in Florida.

The problem of a potential conflict with federal law was brought to the attention of Florida lawmakers several times during the bills’ multiple committee stops, and Templin says they provided language to the bill sponsors to help close any potential loopholes that could get Florida employers in trouble with the feds.

Those proposed changes, he said, weren’t accepted.

“What they’re creating is a statute that contractors will use to say, we can use 16-year-olds to do manual labor on a roofing job, when in fact, that’s illegal by federal law,” he added.

Even critics of the legislation, however, have admitted the bill is not all bad. There’s literally just one small section of the 26-page bill, titled “Career and Technical Education,” that affects child labor protections.

The rest largely concerns career and technical education programs in schools, which are broadly supported, but not fully accessible in all of Florida’s school districts. This legislation, in part, aims to address that problem, according to its sponsors, and to help expand opportunities for Florida students to explore multiple career pathways, including construction.

“What we wanted to do through this bill is ensure that these young people had an opportunity, that were interested in construction, to start to get their feet wet so that they can expand their knowledge base as they move forward and graduate from high school to see if this is actually an interest,” said GOP Sen. Corey Simon, a former professional football

player and sponsor of the legislation in the Florida Senate.

“And so that’s all this bill does, is gives them an opportunity to really engage our construction trades,” he explained.

It’s a nice talking point that the authors of the legislation probably appreciate, too.

Public records originally obtained by Orlando Weekly show that a lobbyist for the Associated Builders and Contractors of Florida, an industry trade group that’s historically lobbied against policies like minimum wage increases, fed Sen. Simon the legislation over email late last year.

The lobbyist, Carol Bowen, also named a lobbyist for the Florida Home Builders Association as a fellow point person.

Bowen has admitted during public testimony that she worked with the bill sponsors on the legislation, and that additional labor is needed in the construction industry due to a looming shortage with older workers retiring, and a current shortage of workers that critics say has been driven in part by a harsh immigration measure signed into law last year.

“More than 50% of the industry is 50 years of age or older and retiring and we are just uniformly working to expose students in school to career and technical education opportunities,” Bowen shared during the House bill’s first committee hearing in January.

Child labor violations in Florida and across the country have risen in recent years, as have the number of industry-backed bills filed in state legislatures aiming to loosen child labor protections in states across the country.

The Home Builders Association of Iowa backed the state’s own child labor rollbacks last year, while the Michigan Home Builders Association explicitly opposed a bill in their state that would establish higher penalties for child labor violations.

Florida GOP Senate bill co-sponsor Keith Perry, a roofing contractor whose own company has been found guilty of wage theft, has argued the construction legislation is unlikely to affect the number of child labor violations in Florida if employers are already violating the law as it is.

“I started roofing when I was 16 years old. I started my business when I was 17 years old — which was illegal, is still illegal, and will be illegal under this bill,” Perry stated candidly during a committee hearing on the legislation last month. “People who break the law are not going to follow the law anyway, whether this bill is passed or not.”

Due to some last-minute edits to provisions of the bill (not affecting child labor standards), the bill is currently “in messages,” meaning it’s headed back to the House for another vote.

Meanwhile, another bill written by a billionaire-funded conservative think tank, similarly targeting Florida’s child labor standards, is also close to securing final passage.

If approved by Gov. DeSantis, both bills would go into effect July 1, 2024.

Legislature reduces restrictions for felons seeking barber or cosmetology licenses

Most people don’t have to wait a decade to take a barber’s licensing exam. Kenneth Marshall scheduled his exam in 2014 but didn’t make it after he was arrested and convicted for cocaine possession. After his release last year, the now 51-year-old Orlando resident is still waiting.

A bill passed in the Florida Legislature this week may change that for Marshall — and others looking to become licensed barbers after getting out of prison.

The bill reduces how long criminal background checks could be used to keep a former inmate from applying for a barber or cosmetology license and allows any inmate enrolled in barber or cosmetology classes while incarcerated to apply those credits toward getting a license. In addition, the measure specifies the term “conviction” applies regardless of crime or sentencing, but allows boards to consider crimes listed in specific statutes if they relate to the profession’s practice.

State law denies licensure based on an applicant’s criminal history if the conviction was in the last five years. The approved measure reduces that to three.

Forcible felonies — which involve physical violence — will still be used to deny an applicant regardless of how old their charges were. That

means Marshall’s 1989 felony attempted armed robbery conviction may still prevent him from getting a license.

“If you got a guy that’s actually coming out of prison and he’s made a commitment to transition to learning a trade so he don’t have to go and commit a crime again, how are you going to use something he’s already done against him?”

Marshall said.“This man has already paid his dues.”

In the last 10 years, the Board of Cosmetology and the Barbers’Board have used both nonviolent crimes, including drug possession and petty theft, and violent crimes to deny licenses, according to public disclosures.

Proponents of the bill are hoping it marks the start of a larger reentry push.

Rep. Kevin Chambliss, D-Miami-Dade, sponsored the original version of the measure. While he initially pushed for a shorter window of two years, Chambliss believes if the bill passes it will “start the conversation”around reentry programs, and open the door for similar future legislation, he said.

“It’s an ongoing process of negotiation, we’re really just very excited that we stuck with this issue, and we’re right there at the finish line.”

The legislation’s focus on barber and cosmetology licenses initially came from issues inmates taking classes faced, he said. Without the bill, the

THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS

Republican-controlled Florida House passes bill to ban homeless people from sleeping in public

The Florida House on Friday approved a controversial proposal that would prevent homeless people from sleeping in public, despite concerns about increased costs for local governments. The Republican-controlled House voted 82-26 along almost-straight party lines to pass the bill (HB 1365), which is backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. It also would make it easier for residents and business owners to challenge local officials over how homelessness is addressed. The Senate is scheduled to take up a similar proposal (SB 1530) on Monday.

House sponsor Sam Garrison, R-Fleming Island, acknowledged the measure “isn’t going

relevant boards don’t have to recognize training hours done under a correctional facility program in its hour requirements.

Barber and cosmetology licenses currently require applicants to pass an exam, pay an application fee and have 900 or 1,200 hours of training, respectively.

There are at least six correctional facilities in Florida with barber or cosmetology training programs. The Department of Corrections did not immediately say how many inmates were participating in these programs.

The new measure requires these credits to be approved by their respective boards.

The changes would come without any substantial state taxation changes, according to a staff analysis report. Florida has the second-highest employment level among barbers, according to a 2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics report. In fiscal year 2021-2022, more than 27,000 barber licenses were active in Florida.

Working without a license doesn’t just make it more difficult to find clients; it’s a second-degree misdemeanor that can result in a maximum penalty of $500 and 60 days in jail.

camping if the sites meet standards set by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Such areas, which could only be used for one year, would have to include access to such things as restrooms and running water, have security and be deemed alcohol- and drug-free. Also, the sites could not harm values of nearby properties or safety.

After his release, Marshall bounced from home to home of relatives and friends, going to Davenport and ending up in Orlando. Without a car, he relies on the bus for transport and uses loans and academic stipends to cover costs.

Through handing out business cards and networking, Marshall’s been able to grab individual clients who let him cut their hair for pay on the side.

By getting a barber license, he said he could consistently work out of a shop, allowing for a more stable, livable income.

He’s stayed committed, Marshall said, to be a positive role model for his son.

“I just kind of keep myself in a positive light and do what I need to do the right way,” he said. “To let him know, ‘Hey man, I’ve had my chances. I’ve done my wrongs, man, but I’m going to let you see me do right, so there’s going to be no issue with you doing right.’”

probably going to be really hard to identify.” The bill also would give residents and business owners standing to file civil lawsuits against local governments for allowing illegal sleeping or camping on public property.

to eliminate homelessness,” but he said current efforts aren’t working.

“This is not a bill designed to put people out of sight, out of mind. It’s quite the opposite,” Garrison said.

He said the goal is to keep Florida cities from becoming like San Francisco and other cities “where the problem exceeds the resources to address it.”

The bill would prevent cities and counties from allowing people to sleep on public property, including at public buildings and in public rights of way. It would allow local governments to designate certain property for sleeping or

But without state funding to carry out the bill, Democrats contended it would increase local-government costs and force homeless people into wooded areas.

Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis, D-Ocoee, said the measure seeks to criminalize homelessness while “bullying municipalities and counties into doing what we want them to do.”

“We must acknowledge that pushing the unhoused out of sight isn’t a solution. It is a failed attempt to sweep a societal problem under the rug,” Bracy Davis said.

Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, said lawmakers should focus on “robust investments in transitional housing and shelters, but no. Instead, we want to designate a location that’s

Fiscally constrained counties — mostly rural counties — would be exempted from certain requirements if they would create a financial hardship.

Rep. Ralph Massullo, R-Lecanto, said the bill would start to clean up streets, while providing safe shelters and mental-health services.

“Will you all have to come back here next year and do some more work? Possibly,” Massullo, who is term-limited, said. “But when the cities aren’t acting, the state needs to, and that’s our responsibility.”

The House on Thursday rejected a series of amendments proposed by Democrats, including proposals to bar perpetrators of domestic violence from being allowed in the designated homeless areas and allowing the areas to remain in place for more than 365 days.

MAD WORLD

MadSoul Festival was a day of music, art, activism and protest in Orlando

MadSoul Music and Arts Festival, last Saturday at Orlando’s Loch Haven Park, was a labor of love organized by Orlando’s U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, featuring a stacked lineup of national and local artists, activists and progressive elected officials.

Frost, the country’s youngest member of Congress, began organizing the event with friends Niyah Lowell and Chris Murie back in 2015. More than 3,000 tickets were sold this year, available on a sliding scale and with a percentage of proceeds going to organizations including the Florida Access Network, Zebra Coalition, Equal Ground and Stand With Abortion Now.

The spirit of the full-day event was one of dogged determination for a world where every human can live with dignity and safety. In connecting with festival attendees, we heard countless stories of people traveling from across the state and state lines to be there, drawn not just by big names like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Lin-Manuel Miranda and headlining band Muna, but by a deep desire for a sense of

community and solidarity in a world that can be perpetually soul-crushing.

A group of friends who made the four-hour drive from Tallahassee told Orlando Weekly, “Things have been pretty dark here in Florida … it’s a beautiful thing to see people from all over the state travel so far to come together.” Another added,“We’re just happy to be in such a safe space with people that I love and from all over the state.”

From the stage, local activists centered their communities’causes and reminded us of the intersections of our movements.

Orlando leader Jasmine Burney-Clark, representing racial justice organization Equal Ground, spoke of their relentless efforts challenging the white supremacist agenda of Governor Ron DeSantis. Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, called on working people to build unions and embrace our power to shape an economy that works for us.

Palestinian solidarity protests happened in and around MadSoul | Photo by Dave Decker

Parkland, Florida, and Manuel Oliver, father of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver, spoke of their efforts to demand action on gun violence. Brandon Wolf, survivor of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, called on attendees to take action in honor of the lives lost on June 12, 2016.

Seven Charleston of March for Our Lives Pine Hills connected the local work to the global: “Free Palestine, free the Congo, free Haiti, free Sudan. A ceasefire, an end to military occupation and a recognition of harms done to our communities is a first step towards justice.”He continued,“We must commit to completing the action, which means the restoration of land, stolen goods, opportunities, and political sovereignty. We want that from Pine Hills to Palestine.”

Elected officials also shared remarks.

Congressman Maxwell Frost announced his re-election campaign alongside Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Greg Casar of Texas. State House representatives Anna V. Eskamani of Florida [full disclosure: Eskamani is this writer’s sister], Zooey Zephyr of Montana, and Justin Jones of Tennessee shared the stage and shared their vision for people-centered politics.

All three representatives made history when elected: Eskamani as Florida’s first IranianAmerican elected to public office, Zephyr as Montana’s first transgender legislator, and Jones as the youngest Black legislator serving in Tennessee. Both Zephyr and Jones faced censorship and expulsion from office for essentially doing the job they were elected to do, using their positions to take on giants and defend the rights of the communities they serve.

When Orlando Weekly spoke with Rep. Jones, he laid out why he made the trip to Florida and how we cannot discount the South.

“Tennessee to Florida, we have to show Southern solidarity. We’re facing a rising tide of authoritarianism, of anti-democratic behavior. And it’s attacking Black and brown communities, women, the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, students, and so we have to stand together. And critically, as young electeds, we have to show

that we are representing a new South, and that’s why I’m here.”

The three House representatives began their remarks restating their support for a ceasefire in Gaza and the importance of supporting justice abroad and at home by taking on the gun lobby, protecting the right to abortion, and defending the rights of transgender people. In Rep. Zephyr’s words,“We stand up for people’s rights in my state of Montana and here in Florida because it’s the right thing to do. We stand up against gun violence because it’s the right thing to do. We call for a ceasefire because it’s the right thing to do. And that needs to be what leads us. Not questions of what is the fallout, what is the political polling. We lead from a moral heart.”

On the lawn just outside the festival was a rally calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, hosted by the End to Genocide Coalition. More than 100 Orlandoans showed up to the rally as part of a global day of action, and many of those activists continued the protest inside the festival.

When Winnie Swan of Orlando group Stand With Abortion Now joined others festival beneficiaries onstage, she read a statement from Central Florida Queers for Palestine calling for an end to United States aid to Israel. Deviating from the celebratory nature of the event, Swan said, “The very same elected officials that put on this event have all come to party and be distracted by performative activism are the same politicians who are remaining complicit in genocide.”

The protests continued throughout headliner Muna’s set. This led to a temporary pause of the show, as the band worked to address the protesters’ demands and confirm attendees’ safety. Muna signed on to the Queer Artists for Palestine letter calling for a permanent ceasefire back in December, and affirmed the protesters’ calls for action and their right to protest. Emotionally moved, the band briefly left the stage to process the moment and decide if they should continue playing.

When they returned to the stage to finish their set, they offered these words:

“I can only imagine the amount of trauma and grief that people are going through in Gaza. And I also can only hope that it moves us into action all around the world. We want a different world, and we might not agree with the different paths that people are taking to get to it.

“Muna as a band, I think we are farther left than a lot of electoral politicians, but we also believe that kind of similar with religion … you don’t necessarily know the right way to get to spirit or God, but I believe there’s something good in trying to get there whatever way you think is best.”

During Muna’s final songs, indie-rock musician Phoebe Bridgers made a surprise appearance. In addition to Palestinian solidarity, Muna dedicated much of their set to the LGBTQ+ community, especially as governor and failed presidential candidate Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature push forward policies targeting the freedoms of transgender Floridians. The band brought back to the stage Brandon Wolf, who dedicated a song to his two best friends, Drew Leinonen and Juan Guerrero, who lost their lives in the Pulse nightclub shooting.

Though unintentionally, the festival captured the contradictions that exist within a rising collective consciousness. As we type these words, American tax dollars are funding the mass murder of innocent people across the world. Military profiteers get richer while members of our community live on the streets just blocks away from where we write. A moment of joy can feel like a betrayal to those suffering as a result of our country’s actions abroad and at home.

And yet, we also know that joy is a tactic of survival. In these times, joy is defiant, dogged and necessary. A movement without joy is doomed. And vital to our movement is art. Centuries of history tell us that art is a form of resistance and essential to liberation.

So how do we navigate these contradictions deep within our souls? It’s a question we constantly ask ourselves, but not one easily answered. Throughout the day at MadSoul Festival, it was clear that more and more people in our city are asking this question and searching for answers in whatever medium serves their spirits — through organizing, music, performance, protest, mutual aid, voter registration, volunteerism, running for office, civil disobedience and direct action — with dogged determination, rage, vulnerability, love, solidarity … and hope for a better world.

NEW RESTAURANTS 2024

88 new restaurants, bars and sweet shops to enjoy in Orlando this year

If 2023 was the year this city flexed its culinary muscle, 2024 is when Orlando bulks the F up.

There’s no shortage of protein- and power-packed restaurants opening this year, from a Winter Park tasting concept by a chef who runs a two-Michelin star restaurant in D.C. to a oneof-a-kind concept rooted in Japanese metaphysics.

A couple of live-fire concepts will blaze a trail in Mills 50, while food halls and food hubs make a resurgence across the city.

From wagyu shabu-shabu and K-Mex to fried donut ice cream sandwiches and Czech-style crispy cones, it’s shaping up to be another banner year for restaurants.

There are even some concepts we know about but can’t write about, at least not yet but, trust us, they too will clap PUMP. YOU. UP.

So sit down, grab a bev, and pore over this list of new restaurants. Just try not to drool too much.

4Roots Farm Campus

Chef Michael Collantes, of Michelin-starred Soseki and handroll bar Sushi Saint, will oversee the culinary concepts at the 4Roots Farm Campus as a “culinary partner” at John Rivers’ sprawling complex. Collantes will curate the food and beverage program on campus, including a grab-and-go market, catering, a cocktail bar, a restaurant specializing in live-fire cooking and a chef’s counter offering a higher-end multicourse tasting. He’ll also develop a fermentation and preservation program.

(Opening late 2024, 1918 W. Princeton St., 4rootsfarm.org)

Alfie’s HiFi Lounge

Team Market Group snatched up Mills 50 dive bar St. Matthew’s Tavern last year, and this year, it will transform into Alfie’s, a vinyl record bar with three uniquely designed rooms. Cocktails will be crafty, and a food menu might make it into the mix post-opening.

(Opening fall, 1300 N. Mills Ave., no website)

An Vi Vietnamese Restaurant

Chef-owner Joseph Nguyen left the Pacific Northwest — and his restaurants Pho Hanoi and Rainier Crawfish in Seattle — to settle in the considerably less scenic city of Casselberry. That’s OK, because his banh mì sandwiches, vermicelli bowls and pho are plenty picturesque.

(Open, 1052 State Road 436, Casselberry, instagram.com/anvi. restaurant)

Baires Grill

The Argentine restaurant is set to occupy one of the ground floor spaces at the Hollywood Plaza Garage entertainment complex, bringing plenty of grilled steaks, seafood, pasta, milanesas and cheese boards.

(Opening fall, 8050 International Drive, bairesgrill.com)

Bar Kada

The 30-seat concept from Soseki’s Michael Collantes will open next door to his Michelin-starred omakase house offering a selection of ancestral-method sakes, low-touch wines curated by sommelier Benjamin Coutts, and seasonal small plates utilizing local ingredients conceived by chef de cuisine Mike Vang.

(Opening March, 957 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, barkadafl.com)

Big Chicken

Shaq’s home-cooked childhood faves will soon be served in the Market at Southside, those faves primarily comprising fried chicken in bready vessels with a variety of toppings. “Uncle Jerome’s Nashville Hot” seems like a slam-dunk order.

(Opening summer, 250 E. Michigan St., bigchicken.com)

Birria1983

Downtown Orlando’s newest taqueria is an L.A.style Mexican restaurant serving all things birria — from quesabirria to birria ramen to birria pizza. Liz and Maureen Huerta, the wife-and-wife duo behind this concept, also serve street corn, rice bowls, fajitas, quesadillas, burritos, Mexican pizzas, churros and more.

(Open, 55 W. Church St., birria1983.com)

Black Bean Deli

Andres Corton will bring media mañanas, media noches and perfectly porcine Cuban sandwiches, not to mention filling plates of shredded Havana pork and picadillo, to his character- and charm-filled Winter Garden outpost on West Plant Street. Oh, and strong coffee too.

(Opening fall, 126 W. Plant St., Winter Garden, blackbeandeli. com)

Boiled Fish

The bright joint specializes in shui zhu yu, the Sichuan “water boiled fish,” though not all of the seven soupy delights blaze an infernal trail. The tomato sauerkraut fish soup is ideal for kids, while the rest veer toward the fiery. The best may very well be the lemon sauerkraut fish soup. The restaurant is owned by a trio of women.

(Open, 8910 Turkey Lake Road, instagram.com/boiledfish_ orlando)

Boxer & Clover

This year promises to be a busy one for Matt Hinckley. Not only did he open midcentury-inspired diner Mid Drive Dive, but he’s also teaming up with lead singer/guitarist Matt Heafy of metalcore band Trivium on a Southern barbecue and pie concept inside East End Market named after characters in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Wild. Should the stall prove successful, a brick-and-mortar may not be far behind.

(Opening March; 3201 Corrine Drive; boxerandclover.com)

The Café at the Alfond Inn

Described as an “art-filled crêperie and pâtisserie by day and a wine and dessert bar by night,” this addition to the Alfond Inn is sure to attract croissant fiends and cake hounds to its swank digs. Coffee and pastries are served daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and wine and dessert from 3 to 11 p.m.

(Open, 300 E. New England Ave., Winter Park, thealfondinn.com)

Ceiba

The signature restaurant at the new Conrad Hotel offers “contemporary rooftop dining rooted in Mexican tradition with a focus on heirloom ingredients and agave-forward spirits.” And, yes, you can see the fireworks over the parks while you eat.

(Open, 1500 Eastbeach Way, Golden Oak, facebook.com/ ceibaorlando)

Chiffon Culture Bakery Café

The Winter Springs Asian-French bakery/café now has a presence in pastry-loving Audubon Park, having taken over the old Sugar Dough Bakehouse space. Everything from cakes and Japanese doughnuts to croissants of every sort — and boba — is offered.

(Open, 3122 Corrine Drive, instagram.com/chiffonculture)

Chuck Lager America’s Tavern

Celeb culinarian and Top Chef contestant Fabio Viviani will open an outpost of his restaurant based on the globe-trotting adventures of one Chuck Lager (who may or may not be a real person). The American tavern will fuse plenty of international influences into its dishes.

(Opening March, 8151 International Drive, chucklager.com)

Clean Eatz

The fast-casual franchise whose food is free of added oils or butter is now giving Seminole County a healthy dose of burgers, wraps, bowls and meltz.

(Open, 438 Rinehart Road, Lake Mary; cleaneatz.com)

Coro Restaurant

Tim and Natalie Lovero’s highly anticipated Audubon Park restaurant will feature Italian-leaning small plates embodying Japanese techniques, philosophy and ingredients. At Coro’s pop-up dinner at Farm & Haus, Lovero’s dishes were a composition of Italian, Indian, Japanese, French and Middle Eastern flavors, with every dish full of surprising turns.

(Opening March, 3022 Corrine Drive, cororestaurant.com)

Crispy Cones

The Shark Tank-approved ice cream concept offers fresh dough cones, “grilled rotisserie-style” then covered with cinnamon and sugar or “a specialty powder.” The dough cone is then filled with your choice of spread, gourmet soft-serve ice cream, fruit and a variety of toppings.

(Opening April, 2415 Curry Ford Road, thecrispycones.com)

d.b.a.

The cocktail bar by Joe and Alda Rees has all the throwback midcentury charm, plus a menu of interestingenough cocktails and bar bites a cut above the norm (duck flatbread, octopus prego, cacio e pepe deviled eggs) to keep folks lingering. It sits next door to the pair’s beloved Mills 50 restaurant, The Strand.

(Open, 809 N. Mills Ave., instagram.com/d.b.a.orlando)

Debonair Supper Club

The 6,300-square-foot “modern day supper club” houses a giant white giraffe dangling a chandelier from its teeth, if that tells you anything about the style-over-substance experience at this clubby downtown den of distractions and celebrations.

(Open, 183 S. Orange Ave., debonairorlando.com)

Dick’s Last Resort

No, this isn’t a hole in the wall (get it?) but a Southern comfort spot known for its purposely obnoxious service. Back in 2016, Dick’s abruptly closed its Orlando location, leaving restaurant workers in the lurch. Dick move! Now they’re coming back “bigger and better” to Pointe Orlando.

(Opening spring, 9101 International Drive, dickslastresort.com)

Dim Sum House

John Zhao, the man behind Yummy House, YH Seafood Clubhouse, Bakery 1908 and Kyuramen brings a bevy of Cantonese favorites to Clermont, from steamed dumplings to Hong Kong-style roast duck.

(Opening March, 2440 E. Highway 50, dimsumhousefl.com)

The Drake Kitchen + Bar

Heberto and Rona Segura have been operating one of the best food trucks in town with Duck & Drake Kitchen but, let’s be honest, a brick-and-mortar has been long overdue. The Drake’s “elevated global tapas” are now being served inside a 2,400-square-foot space at the Radius Apartments downtown.

(Open, 361 N. Rosalind Ave., thedrakeorl.com)

Eastwood

Team Marketing Group is altering the city’s landscape with such notable projects as Primrose Lanes, the Wellborn, Mathers Social Gathering, Taco Kat, Plantees and the Acre. In addition to Alfie’s, the group will open this 3,300-square-foot, live-fire restaurant across the street from Plantees featuring a sizable custom wood-burning grill over a blend of oak and hardwood lump coal, as well as a large-scale smoker. Both will be used to fire, char and flavor meats, fish and vegetables, as well as influence some of Eastwood’s cocktails.

(Opening winter, 1024 N. Mills Ave., instagram.com/ eastwoodorlando)

Fatburger

Fatburger’s handhelds are offered in four sizes, the largest being the 1.5-pound “XXXL Triple King Burger,” topping out at 2,050 calories. It’s notoriously B.I.G., so no surprise that Fatburger is, arguably, rap music’s most iconic burger joint.

(Open, 1713 Future Way, Celebration, fatburger.com)

Gen Korean BBQ

The Cali import with close to 40 locations across California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and Florida will bring its full-service, all-you-can-eat brand of Korean barbecue featuring a host of “premium” cuts ranging from red wine-marinated pork belly to Angus brisket.

(Opening 2024, 525 N. Alafaya Trail, genkoreanbbq.com)

Grazie Modern Italian Kitchen

The concept from seasoned restaurateur Nazih Sebaali (Café Annie, Meza Mediterranean Grill), is set to move into the building that long held Bem Bom. The menu will feature “Italian classics with a modern touch.”

(Opening April, 3101 Corrine Drive, grazieorlando.com)

(Opening summer, Princeton Street and North Orange Blossom Trail, packingdistrictorlando.com)

Hangry Bison

A new 6,330-square-foot bastion of burgerdom will open in Colonial Town Park in Lake Mary with two bars as well as a party room. The menu will reflect those at the other locations in Winter Park and Winter Garden, along with plenty of cocktails, whiskeys and bourbons. Expect weekend brunch and “Hangry Hour” Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

(Opening July, 951 Market Promenade Ave., Lake Mary, thehangrybison.com)

Helena Modern Riviera

The latest offering from Atelier Dining Group (Mangoni Italian Market Pizza, Rosallie Le French Café) brings contemporary Mediterranean fare to Icon Park in the form of pricey and accessible steaks, chops, shanks, burgers and sharable plates.

(Open, 8441 International Drive, helenamodernriviera.com)

H Mart

The Jersey-based Korean grocery store’s first Florida outpost has drawn a lot of buzz and excitement since the announcement came three years ago, but with site work and remodeling of the old Super Target building now underway, an opening is somewhat in sight. When it does open, the 185,000-square-foot space will be a one-stop shop for all things Asian. Among H Mart’s offerings: a food court, bakery, kids cafe and Korean BBQ, of course.

(Opening December, 7501 W. Colonial Drive, hmart.com)

Hot Asian Buns

If you’ve sunk your teeth into Jimmy Nguyen’s Chau Vo’s KFC bao with gochujang, nori, scallions and a creamy slaw, you’ll likely make a beeline to Sanford when they open their baoery in the old Moon’s Subs space. BTW: Their bao are handmade in small batches using all-natural ingredients free of preservatives.

(Opening April, 441 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, lazymoonpizza. com)

Leiah Kitchen + Celler

Billed as a “modern chef table experience with an eclectic menu that makes perfect symphony with a unique cellar,” the downtown restaurant on the ground floor of the Hilton Garden Inn is fronted by chef Omar Torres, who plans on using the “most luxurious elements of land and sea.” Not sure if the “Celler” spelling is intentional or not, but Torres’ approach to fine dining certainly appears to be.

The South Florida-based chain specializes in Venezuelanstyle, wood-grilled skewered meats. It will move into the space that previously held the Famous Flame off John Young Parkway and West Sand Lake Road.

(Opening 2024, 3060 W. Sand Lake Road, nandogrillcarneenvara.com)

Naya Comida + Barrita

Agave Azul’s Juan Rios will anchor the Trelago Market in Maitland with this contemporary Mexican woodfire concept. The menu will be centered around three elements dating to pre-Hispanic times — wood fire, nixtamal and mezcal. Naya will be inspired by the Pacific coast of Riviera Nayarit, featuring handcrafted tortillas using organic masa imported from Mexico along with mezcal and tequila-centric cocktails.

(Opening spring, 601 Trelago Way, Maitland, instagram.com/ nayacomida)

Nola’s Ice Cream

Marie Mercado of the Greenery Creamery and Sampaguita Ice Cream teams up with investor partners Khoa Nguyen and Keren Swanson to open this sweet treatery specializing in, hold on to your statins, fried doughnut ice cream sandwiches. The shop will be situated in the same space as Lewis Lin’s shabu-shabu concept Nabe and also offer classic ice cream scoops with plenty of Asian inspiration, sundaes and floats.

(Opening May, 7988 Via Dellagio Way, no website)

Ômo by Jônt Orlando

The 16-seat “experiential” tasting menu concept by chef Ryan Ratino of two-Michelin-star D.C. powerhouse Jônt will usher guests through three separate rooms, where they’ll feast on 18 to 22 courses of refined French-Japanese creations. The Living Room is where those able to foot the cost ($245 plus pairings at $195 and, gulp, $595) will snack on a “barrage of canapés.” They’ll then be led to the Savory Counter for the brunt of the meal, then the Pastry Parlor, where it all comes to a glorious gut-busting conclusion. Needless to say, Ômo will be one of the highest-profile openings of the year.

(Opening March, 115 E. Lyman Ave., Winter Park, omobyjont. com)

Oza Izakaya

Tim Liu, the man behind Mikado Sushi in MetroWest and Boku Sushi in Maitland, will open a new concept in Williamsburg called Oza Izakaya, styled after the unpretentious post-work haunts in Kyoto. Liu is also planning another location of Oza at Eagle Creek Plaza in Lake Nona sometime next year.

(Opening summer, 5310 Central Florida Parkway, ozaizakaya. com)

The Packwoods

The craft cocktail bar from Thriving Hospitality (Lamp & Shade Craft Kitchen, Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery) will join Wave Asian Bistro, Pizza Bruno and Foxtail Coffee as the food vendors inside the Maitland Social. The 1,400-square-foot space will focus only on cocktails — food won’t be served.

(Opening summer, 360 E. Horatio Ave., Maitland, thrivinghospitalityent.com)

Parea Greek Tavern

Maitland may finally get a restaurant worthy of the prominent space at the intersection of Horatio and South Orlando avenues. The Greek taverna from the team behind Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine touts family recipes, like Yiayia Phyllis’ lemon potatoes and Yiayia Koula’s bougatsa (a custard pastry), that have been passed down through generations, each a “labor of love.”

(Opening fall, 111 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, instagram.com/ parea_greek_taverna)

Parlor Doughnuts

The Indiana-based chain known for their cronut-like layered doughnuts moved into the old Café Linger space and now offers nearly two dozen confections crafted from layers of buttery dough crisp-fried on the outside and light/fluffy on the inside.

(Open, 2912 Edgewater Drive, parlordoughnuts.com)

Pepper Lunch

Toward the end of the year, guests will sear their own meats and veg at this popular Japanese DIY teppanyaki chain. Just where exactly we don’t yet know.

(Opening December, location TBD, pepperlunchrestaurants. com)

Pig Floyd’s Winter Park

After Bubbalou’s closed in 2021, Thomas Ward swept in and announced a plan to bring his “urban barbakoa” to Winter Park. This is the third year we’ve announced an imminent

opening, though apparently it’s still happening … someday; Ward says construction should start April 1.

(Opening end of 2024, 1471 Lee Road, Winter Park, pigfloyds. com)

Pinstripes

Opening a 40,000-square-foot venue housing a bistro, bowling lanes and bocce courts takes plenty of balls (literally). The fare promises wood-fired pizzas, seasonal gelato and a host of Italian American dishes. Think Primrose Lanes but with way more tourists.

(Opening spring, 11643 Daryl Carter Parkway, pinstripes.com)

Pizza Bruno

The much-vaunted pizzeria will open a location inside the Maitland Social, taking over the 1,400-square-foot space initially slotted for Vitality Bowls Superfood Cafe. (An açai lover’s loss is a pizza lover’s gain.) The Maitland outpost will serve neo-Neapolitan pies of the sort fired up at the original Curry Ford location, not the Jersey-style pies served at Pizza Bruno College Park.

(Opening summer, 360 E. Horatio Ave., Maitland, pizzabrunofl.com)

Poke Burri

The Atlanta-born Japanese restaurant’s first Florida outpost brings its brand of sushi burritos, sushi doughnuts, sushi corn dogs and sushi pizza to Winter Garden, in addition to a host of build-your-own ramen options. The location has a full bar and offers various teas and beverages. Their not-so-secret “secret menu” is posted regularly to Poke Burri’s Instagram page.

(Open, 12615 W. Colonial Drive, Winter Garden, pokeburri. com)

Potbelly Sandwich Shop

The Chicago-based chain specializing in sammies toasted at 500 degrees Fahrenheit is diversifying the eating options at Colonial Landing Plaza.

(Open, 2714 E. Colonial Drive, potbelly.com)

Rolled Pita Bar

This fast-casual pita wrap joint will open downtown next door to Mecatos Bakery & Café in the former home of Pokeworks and also offer salads, smoothies and milkshakes.

(Opening winter, 20 N. Orange Ave., rolledpitabar.com)

Rosetta Bakery

The Miami-based Italian pastry shop’s first Central Florida location will sit next to Johnny Rockets inside the Mall at Millenia and serve everything from pizza and stuffed focaccia to croissants and millefoglie.

(Opening 2024, 4200 Conroy Road, rosettabakery.com)

Schmankerl Stub’n

From the folks behind Dan’s Bavarian Takeout comes “Orlando’s only authentic German restaurant,” promising scratch-made German classics and modern dishes.

(Opening summer, 131 N. Orange Ave., schmankerlstubn.com) [continued

Shawarma Bros

From the culinary minds of Chris Hernandez (Papi’s Smashburger) and William Herrera (Pass Kitchen food truck) comes this concept offering unique spins on Lebanese-forward Mediterranean street food. The pair have staged pop-ups around town but hope to go brick-and-mortar sometime this year.

(Opening 2024, no location announced, instagram.com/ shawarma__bros)

Side Chik K-Mex Street Food

Hoi Nguyen, the man behind Mills 50 Korean fried chicken joint Chi-Kin, will channel Roy Choi when he opens this Korean-Mexican street food concept next door. Nguyen isn’t saying much about this side hustle, but tacos, I’m thinking, will definitely be a part of it.

(Opening spring, 811 N. Mills Ave., chi-kin.com)

Sixty Vines

The NoCal-inspired boîte will open its second area location in the space that long held Roy’s Restaurant. Expect the same bright, airy interior and a menu of pizzas, pastas, charcuterie boards and healthy-ish mains.

(Opening winter, 7760 W. Sand Lake Road, sixtyvines.com)

Smokemade Meats + Eats

The stellar pop-up run by Tyler Brunache will bring Central Texas-style barbecue to the old Italian House Restaurant space. His brisket might be the best in the city, but other items like cheddar-jalapeño sausage, ribs, smoked turkey and bangin’ sides and desserts will set barbecue fiends afire.

(Opening spring, 1400 S. Crystal Lake Drive, smokemade.com)

Sorekara

The Japanese restaurant, from chef William Shen and restaurateurs Johnny and Jimmy Tung, will be built around the philosophy of sorekara (Japanese for “and then”) and appreciating each unique moment of life. Guests will be ushered through multiple rooms rooted in this philosophy for an hours-long meal comprising 20-plus bites. “We want guests to think about their experience, and think about it for days and weeks after,” says Shen. “It’s one of a kind,” says Tung.

(Opening March, 4979 New Broad St., sorekarafl.com)

Shin Jung

The Korean restaurant that’s served East Colonial Drive for 30 years will open a second location on West Colonial Drive. The new digs (in the old Seoulicious/Miller’s Ale House space) will incorporate a decidedly modern vibe with neon signage.

(Opening summer, 7379 W. Colonial Drive, shinjungkoreanbbq.com)

Stadium Club

The 9,000-square-foot, two-floor venue inside the Caribe Royale Orlando will certainly give Tom’s Watch Bar (see below) a run for its money. The sprawling “not a sports bar” features fare by James Beard Award-winning chef and Top Chef contestant Jeff McInnis and his wife, Janine Booth, herself a Top Chef contestant and James Beard Award nominee. Virtual golf courses, quarterback and slapshot challenges, televised sports events and a live DJ are all a part of the experience.

(Open, 8101 World Center Drive, stadiumclub.com)

Storyville Coffee Co.

The café is home to Seattle’s most expensive latte at $8.50, but Winter Parkers can get a taste when it opens a branch inside the recently vacated Imperial Kitchen & Wine Bar space off Park Avenue. The coffee company, based in Bainbridge Island, Washington, is owned by Full Sail co-chairman Jon Phelps and has two café locations in Seattle.

(Opening 2024, 170 E. Morse Blvd., Winter Park, storyville.com)

Thai Spoon

Thai Spoon has moved into the Pho & Roll building and finally put the “curry” in Curry Ford Road.

(Open, 3334 Curry Ford Road, thaispoonorlando.com)

Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar

Part of the Winter Park Village grand makeover, this golfer’s delight sees guests place orders at the bar, then have food and cocktails delivered to their tables. And of course there’s also a retail store showcasing TB’s brand of relaxed-fit glory.

(Open, 438 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park, tommybahama.com)

Tom’s Watch Bar

A boob-tube-heavy sports bar by Smashburger founder Tom Ryan will open on the top floor of the Hollywood Plaza Garage entertainment complex, bringing sportsball fanatics to the sprawling space. Apart from the 40-ounce beers and booze, the chain offers pub grub beyond burgers and wings — think prime rib dips, ahi tuna towers, butter-poached lobster and shrimp tacos.

(Opening April, 8126 International Drive, tomswatchbar.com)

Top Protein

A start-up protein technology company that manufactures meat from ruminant milk will open a flagship restaurant in College Park. Top Protein’s brands include Workout Burger, Crispy Buttermilk Chickin, Top Protein Pizza and Fresh Craft Energy Drink. Look for it to take over the entire building that once housed Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen and Jaber Lebanese Cuisine. Their “high quality protein meals” will be available for dine-in, takeout and delivery. The fate of Top Protein bears watching, as a bill banning “lab-grown” meat (see ICYMI, page 7) makes its way through the Florida Legislature.

(Opening spring, 2607 Edgewater Drive, topprotein.com)

Torchy’s Tacos

The popular Austin, Texas-based chain is known for its housemade tortillas and intriguing filling combinations (like jerk chicken with grilled jalapeños and mango, or blackened salmon with grilled corn and black bean relish). Breakfast tacos are also offered.

(Open, 999 N. State Road 434, Altamonte Springs, torchystacos.com)

Unnamed Project by Artistry Restaurants

Winter Park awaits this large — like 6,700 square feet large — restaurant on the southern end of Park Avenue by Artistry Restaurants, who operate Boca and Atlantic Beer & Oyster on the north end of the strip, with a menu celebrating the best Florida has to offer — fresh fish and seafood as well as locally raised beef and plenty of citrus. (This is another one we announced last year as well, but hope springs eternal.)

(Opening 2024, 500 S. Park Ave., Winter Park, artistryrestaurants.com)

Volcano Hot Pot & BBQ

The fourth area location of this popular chain will open inside the Colonial Landing Plaza, joining outposts in Kissimmee, I-Drive and Winter Garden. A slew of meats as well as seven varieties of broth will greet Colonialtown visitors.

(Opening spring, 3560 E. Colonial Drive, hotpotvolcano.com)

Voodoo Bayou

The Moonfish space in Dr. Phillips has stayed vacant for nearly four years, but it won’t be for much longer when this “Southern Cajun Kitchen” brings its NOLA-inflected fare (buttermilk biscuits, gator bites and fried chicken are notables) and extensive whiskey and bourbon selection to Sand Lake Road.

(Opening March, 7525 W. Sand Lake Road, voodoobayou.com)

Wave Asian Bistro + Sushi

The popular Mount Dora sushi house, known for its creative sushi doughnuts, sushi burritos, sushi pizza and sushi burgers, will anchor the soon-to-open Maitland Social in a 1,373-squarefoot space with a 500-square-foot outdoor patio.

(Opening May, 360 E. Horatio Ave., Maitland, waveasianbistro.com)

White Rabbit Restaurant & Bar

“International tapas, small plates and craft cocktails” will greet guests to this downtown boîte that’s also the sister resto to Vines Grille & Wine Bar in Dr. Phillips. The project has been plagued by delays but, as of now, the “NYC-inspired restaurant where Latin American and American gastropub cuisine meet craft cocktails” is still a go.

(Opening 2024, 27 E. Robinson St., whiterabbitorlando.com)

The Yardery

The family-friendly, 5,400-square-foot restaurant will feature the only rooftop bar in Lake County, along with 11,000 square feet of yard and patio space for games and activities.

(Opening fall, 221 N. Baker St., Mount Dora, theyardery.com)

Yummii 2 Go Asian Gourmet

The buildout continues at this mysterious little Winter Park eatery next door to the soon-to-open Jeff’s Bagel Run, but we’re guessing customers will be able to procure … yummy gourmet Asian food to go.

COUCHSURFING:

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday, March 6:

Extraordinary — The British superhero comedy picks up where Season 1 left off: with late bloomer Jen about to be blindsided by the revelation that her boyfriend, Jizzlord the shape-shifter, already has a wife and kid. In other words, it’s like dating a member of the Chamber of Commerce, except the only shape they shift into is “bulbous.” (Hulu)

Full Swing — Season 2 of the golf docuseries promises unprecedented access to Italy’s Ryder Cup and its participating players and team captains. But in keeping with the traditions of the pastime, you won’t be able to see any of it if you’re Jewish. (Netflix)

Supersex — Alessandro Borghi (The Eight Mountains) plays real-life porn star Rocco Siffredi, and Jasmine Trinca is a composite of his significant others in a dramatic series created and written by renowned “militant feminist” Francesca Manieri. Because nothing says “feminist” like reducing a bunch of actual women to a composite. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday, March 7:

ARA San Juan: The Submarine That Disappeared — Return to the nail-biting events of November 2017, when an Argentinian submarine went missing with a crew of 44 aboard. It might seem mystifying that anything could waylay 44 sailors at once, but remember: Lauren Boebert wasn’t busy with Congress yet. (Netflix)

The Gentlemen — Director Guy Ritchie milks his 2019 feature film about a British pot-growing dynasty into an eight-episode series with an all-new cast. Much like his ex Madonna, who is currently milking her old catalog by singing it through a brand-new face. (Netflix)

The Signal — In this four-episode limited series, an astronaut returns to Earth eagerly awaiting a reunion with her family — but her plane disappears just before she can reach them. OK, Alanis, we’ll let you call this one ironic. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday, March 8:

Blown Away: Extreme Heat — New host Hunter March (Sugar Rush) presides over Season 4 of the glassblowing competition show, which brings 10 more contestants to an Ontario warehouse to create spontaneous

art at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. (That’s the temperature of the ovens they use, not of the warehouse itself. Trust me, nobody wants to see a bunch of glassblowers naked.) (Netflix)

Damsel — Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto, 28 Weeks Later) directs Millie Bobby Brown in a twisted fairy tale about a young woman who marries a handsome prince, only to find out he intends to sacrifice her to a dragon. Honestly, that’s the worst happy ending anybody’s gotten since they bulldozed that entire stretch of 17-92 in Fern Park. (Netflix)

Premieres Monday, March 11:

The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys — Somebody decided the world needed a reality version of Yellowstone, so a camera crew descended upon Missouri’s McBee Farm & Cattle just as patriarch Steve McBee was about to decide which of his three sons should take over the family business. Oh, and also while all three of them were pissed off at him for betraying their mother with an extramarital affair. If it sounds like this show can’t fit in any more drama, wait until the cows find out how much baby aspirin is in that bunk oxy he’s been selling them. (Peacock)

Young Royals — Taking their love public has consequences for Prince Wilhelm and Simon as the Swedish LGBTQ drama reaches its conclusion in Season 3. What kind of consequences? Well, for one thing, they have to weigh a lot of competing offers to host New Year’s Eve countdowns. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday, March 12:

Never Seen Again — Season 5 checks in with devastated family members whose loved ones vanished from locations as far-flung as Aruba, Texas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, upstate New York and London. Out of all of those, I’d prefer to go missing from Aruba, but I’d settle for being socially invisible in Muncie if they added it as an option. (Paramount+)

Steve Treviño: Simple Man — Sometimes referred to as “a Texan Henny Youngman,” the comic reveals the true and deep devotion behind his exaggerated marriage-bashing in a special directed by none other than his wife, Renae. Gosh, it’s like finding out Santa Claus doesn’t really harbor a festering, gay-pornfueled resentment toward Mrs. Claus after all. (Netflix)

Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War — The latest attempt to exploit Oppenheimer mania is a docuseries that explains how the development of the atomic bomb led to a tense, decades-long standoff between the U.S. and Russia. Experts interviewed include current Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — who will no doubt remind us all how lucky we are that we don’t have to worry about anything like that anymore. (Netflix)

TIME TRAVELER

Dave Stewart revisits the ‘Eurythmics Songbook’ on an Orlando stage

Dave Stewart finds time to be a fascinating thing.

The English musical legend, best known as half of synth-pop duo Eurythmics alongside Annie Lennox, has many claims to fame. Despite a busy and lengthy career of songwriting, producing and performing over decades, Stewart says that he’s able to reconnect with his past by transporting himself back in time through music.

“When I go to a point in time, the first day I met Annie, or the first time we played a stadium, or the first time I learned how to play this or whatever, it’s funny because time stands still, you go immediately back there. Like you can walk down the street and somebody’s cutting the lawn in their garden, and the smell of fresh-cut grass, you’re taken somewhere else immediately,” Stewart says during a phone interview with Orlando Weekly. “Music is one of the few things that does that, right?”

Stewart’s most recent musical adventure has him joining Bryan Adams on his “So Happy It

Hurts” arena tour, serving as a special guest with his latest stage show, “Eurythmics Songbook.” Stewart says performing live is one of his favorite things in life.

“It’s always a joy to me to have an audience. Especially when I get to play and improvise on songs that, you know, the audience likely knows at least 50 percent of, unless they’re a fan of Eurythmics,” Stewart says. “It’s a celebration between me and my band and them, because they haven’t been hearing those songs live for 30-odd years.”

Stewart’s career spans both solo and group pursuits, including collaborations with Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Mick Jagger and Daryl Hall, to name just a few. Although his experience is extensive, Stewart still seems a little shocked that Eurythmics took off in the way they did with American listeners.

“In England, we didn’t really have MTV blowing up like in America. So when we made the videos for ‘Sweet Dreams’ or ‘Here Comes the Rain Again’ and things like that, we didn’t think

“The inspiration behind all our songs, with Annie and myself, a lot of it was just the two of us together. We had been a couple, and we decided not to be a couple after four years. When we were a couple, we didn’t write any songs together or separately, we were in another band and the other guy in the band wrote the songs.

“Then we decided not to live together, and then we wrote about 140 songs together,” Stewart says.“It’s my advice to all young duos out there, or young couples if you’re getting into music: Live together, then break up and start writing songs.”

With Eurythmics’ recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and Stewart’s and Lennox’s own inductions to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it is clear that Stewart’s career has brought him to a point many only dream of achieving. And it all stems from those little moments he’s able to revisit time and time again in his mind.

“I can still be exactly at that moment in the room, creating ‘Sweet Dreams.’ Annie was lying on the floor kind of really down and depressed because we were working really hard and she didn’t think we’d get anywhere. And then when I programmed the beginning of ‘Sweet Dreams,’ it was very loud and she leapt up, really excited. I remember all of it, exactly what happened, and I can be in that room,” Stewart says.

Stewart holds a particular fondness for his return to Florida, as the state reminds him of time spent with beloved friend Tom Petty.

we were making them for MTV. We were making little vignettes that would go with the song in a very sort of artistic way,” Stewart says. “And then they put the “Sweet Dreams” video on MTV and that sort of went bonkers. Well, that’s the English word for ‘went crazy.’”

Eurythmics’ iconic hit, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” is still a joy for Stewart to play for audiences decades later and it’s one of his personal highlights from the Eurythmics Songbook set.

“‘Sweet Dreams,’ the whole place goes nuts,” Stewart marvels.“‘Sweet Dreams’ has never been off the radio, never been off clubs, never been off festivals, you know what I mean? It’s like an anthem.”

Despite their now easily-recognizable discography, the Eurythmics duo found themselves in an unusual personal situation upon forming in the 1980s: Lennox and Stewart had just ended a relationship.

However, Stewart feels this may have been the secret to their success all along.

“I do have special connections [to Florida] because of my great friend, Tom Petty. I bought the house around the corner from him. I wrote ‘Don’t Come Around Here No More’ with Tom and other songs. He was making the Traveling Wilburys album with George Harrison staying in my house in the back garden,” Stewart recalls.“Florida has always been a really amazing audience. My main connection to Florida is working a lot and talking a lot with Tom. He was a great friend.”

“Eurythmics Songbook” has brought Stewart back on the road for the first time in years, a place he says he missed and cherishes deeply, getting to connect with an audience all these years later and still feeling the same energy and excitement as he did the first time.

“Time is such a strange thing, you know? Einstein said time is an illusion, but in India, they don’t agree with that. They think time is something measured in the heart,” Stewart says. “Being 19 years old or 18 years old, I got signed to Chris Blackwell’s Island Music, and then Elton John signed me to his record label. And my life and career started then, 50-something years ago.” music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

Vaporwave has always been primarily a sampler’s genre. There is, however, a sliver of practitioners who do it with the craft of traditional composers, and prolific Orlando artist Breadbarn is one of the newest worth noting.

Just like accomplished fellow local artist Dan Mason, Breadbarn specializes in a sample-free brand of electronic pop that weaves the vaporwave nostalgia all by hand, rather than the plunderphonic approach that’s endemic to the microgenre. Brent Barnhart — the mind behind Breadbarn — is exacting, even academic, in his pursuit of the vaporwave aesthetic. “I want people to think that what they’re hearing actually appeared on the Weather Channel in 1995 or was the background music on the VHS they watched in their middle-school science class,” he says.

Breadbarn’s entire presentation exudes the genre’s hallmarks. Between the sounds, imagery and song titles, it’s all soft focus and synthesizers — and it’s textbook vaporwave.“When one of my songs was one of the most popular posts of the year on /r/vaporwave, I realized I was actually onto something,” says Barnhart.

The fact that Breadbarn’s music is created entirely from scratch, more like chillwave than

Breadbarn’s first true full-length album. New LP This Could Be Your Dream Vacation is pure retro reverie, a fully rendered and instantly transporting fantasy that bottles the sonic zeitgeist of the 1980s with extraordinary fidelity. But this is no pop-radio redux. Breadbarn’s music is less interested in reviving the decade’s Top 40 than romanticizing the backing soundtracks in commercials, TV, movies and malls. In so doing, this album captures not simply the sounds but the very aura of the 1980s. Moreover, it’s got a distinctly Floridian flavor.

“I grew up in the Panhandle and my parents managed a timeshare resort,” Barnhart says. “Hotels, beaches, escapism and gauche advertising are all themes I try to weave into my music and imagery. I’d like to think that my music is very ‘Florida.’ This album is.”

Even more than just a sonic postcard, though, This Could Be Your Dream Vacation is a plush portal to the past that immerses with stunning specificity. It’s pastiche par excellence, and it now streams everywhere and is available on Bandcamp as a name-your-price download. If you want the full audiovisual experience, check out the perfect throwback music videos on Breadbarn’s YouTube channel.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Black Wick, Los Jarritos, Snotnoze Saleem, Daniel Fuzztone, Derek Dunn: This bill is probably the week’s most illustrious and colorful cross-section of the Orlando underground. Warped electronic music act Black Wick is a recent breakout that’s pushed mastermind Joshua Rogers out from his already notable roles as Illuminated Paths label visionary and Broken Machine Films video artist and into the stage spotlight.

Prolific Orlando electronic artist Breadbarn specializes in a sample-free brand of electronic pop that weaves vaporwave nostalgia by hand, rather than the plunderphonic approach

typical sample-based vaporwave, makes sense since Barnhart actually comes from a traditional indie-rock background. After years of artistic struggle there, he came to be an accidental electronic-music artist once he finally shed his own biases on the genre.

Now, after a steady stream of smaller releases since 2022, Barnhart is finally emerging with

Flanking him are a who’s who of Orlando notables, including garage-pop outsiders Los Jarritos, freak-rap star Snotnoze Saleem, drone voyager Daniel Fuzztone and free-improv mover Derek Dunn. More than just another local show, this is the state of the scene right now. (8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, Uncle Lou’s, $5)

Nick Shoulders and the Okay Crawdad, Holy Locust: Deep country heritage and a progressive social attitude might seem like unlikely bedmates. But Arkansas maverick Nick Shoulders would disagree, because he himself sits at that very intersection. His music is rooted in pre-pop country, and his singing is an unmistakably old-school cowboy croon that even packs whistling and yodeling. Meanwhile, Shoulders has forcefully and articulately argued in both his career and even published writing that country music is and should be about more than the same white experience that the mainstream country machine has been commodifying for generations. In Nick Shoulders, it all adds up to a winning unicorn of country tradition, enlightened outlook and indie sense of humor. Opening are folk-punks Holy Locust. Milk

You’ve still got a few days left, so get in on this action. UCF graduate and Orlando playwright Gian Arellano is staging his original production, Milk, on the always-adventurous Ren Theatre stage. Milk is a darkly comic tale of a sinister dairy company, which touches on themes of out-of-control capitalism and relationships between immigrant families. “When I considered how to combine these two ideas (the Latin American experience and commercialism), I thought of the homogenized ‘Got Milk?’ commercials that were ubiquitous in my childhood, and thus, a play was born,” explains Arellano of Milk’s genesis. Milk is part of the Ren’s (with an assist from United Arts) “New Works for a New World,” program “to cultivate and produce work by up-and-coming local and diverse playwrights.” Take in some new and edgy local theater; you’ll be glad you did. Renaissance Theatre Co., 415 E. Princeton St., rentheatre. com, $30-$55. — Matthew Moyer

Batman (1989) in Concert

“Do you wanna get [classically] nuts? Let’s get nuts!” Thirty-five years ago, the iconic 1989 film Batman hit theaters, kicking o the superhero cinematic craze that still lives on, for better or worse, to this day. To celebrate the anniversary, Batman (1989) In Concert is happening all over the U.S., including at the Dr. Phillips Center this week. Batman was directed by Tim Burton and starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra will play Danny Elfman’s vibrant and eccentric soundtrack live to accompany the film screening, turning the Steinmetz into the Batcave. (Insert jokes about bats’ hearing here.) There will be both a matinee and evening showing. 3:30 & 7:30 p.m., Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the

Bob Dylan

Willie Nelson in February, the Rolling Stones in June … and Bob Dylan this week? It’s all true. Dylan and his band roll into Orlando much “like a rolling stone” as part of his ongoing Rough and Rowdy Ways tour. The 82-year-old’s Florida-heavy run includes dates in Fort Lauderdale, Clearwater, Fort Myers, Jacksonville and this two-night stand at the Walt Disney Theater. As with most things Bob Dylan, this sudden glut of Florida dates is just another mysterious move in a career of enigmatic whim. Is he coming South for the last days of winter as snowbirds often do? Does he feel his legacy might need a bit of onstage burnishing after using an autopen to autograph (expensive) exclusive copies of his recent book? Is he itching to just let it all hang out on stage in front of audiences who maybe have never seen him play before? Who’s to say. He’s a legend, true, but he loves to confound and often frustrate expectations And that includes setlist choices. So just go for the experience; who knows where it might lead you — transcendent versions of “Tangled Up in Blue” or at Sly Fox after, downing shots and cursing the whole evening. It’s on you, baby blue. 8 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $61.88-$716.04. — MM

Singhaus Scholarship

Oscar Party

OK, here’s an Oscar watch party we might actually enjoy. The Center hosts an all-star soiree at the Abbey to raise money for the Singhaus Scholarship Fund, which grants scholarships to young local LGBTQ students studying for careers in the performing arts. The fund was set up to honor the memory of the Singhaus family, all pivotal figures in our local arts and drag scene: Marcy, Steve and Sam “Miss Sammy” Singhaus. You’ve got your red carpet, ra es, a silent auction, a DJ spinning, and the expected snax and drinx. But forget all that because a local holy trinity of Orlando drag will guide you through the evening in the form of co-hosts Ginger Minj and Gidget Galore (you can have your Jon Stewarts and Jimmy Kimmels, this is the roasting we need) with a special guest, the transcendent Darcel Stevens. It seems like the actual broadcast will be the most humdrum part of the evening. 5:30 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando. com, $30-$200. — MM
