No new nightclubs downtown as City Council extends freeze; another Wells Fargo branch files to unionize; left-lane highway hogs targeted; and other news you may have missed.

» Orlando likely to extend moratorium on new nightclubs downtown Orlando City Council last week unanimously, and without any discussion on the matter, voted to extend a moratorium on the opening of new nightclubs downtown, priming it for a final vote of approval in March. The moratorium, first established in March 2023, is set to expire March 20 of this year. Initially, city leaders agreed to a six-month halt, but voted unanimously to extend that last August, ahead of its expiration the following month. If approved through a second vote at their next regularly scheduled Council meeting, the freeze — intended to discourage an excessive influx of rowdy bar-goers and potential criminal activity — will be extended for a second time, set to expire on Sept. 20. According to city documents, the moratorium on nightclubs is meant to support the city’s mission of encouraging more daytime activity in the downtown Orlando area. Orlando City Council, the extension ordinance reads, “needs additional time to develop regulations to address the negative secondary impacts of nightclubs in order to protect the public’s health, safety and welfare.”

» Wells Fargo employees at an Apopka branch file petition to unionize Wells Fargo employees at a branch location in Apopka have become the second Wells Fargo branch in Florida to file a petition to unionize with Wells Fargo United, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America. The first location, in Daytona Beach, unionized in January following a union election. Noell Calas, an associate personal banker at the Apopka branch, said in a statement that she and her co-workers are organizing for a voice on the job and to address chronic issues they haven’t been able to resolve through existing channels, like understaffing. “We are certain that through a union, we can establish a dialogue that is both respected and acted upon, ensuring that our voices are not just heard, but part of the decision-making process that affects our day-to-day life.” Wells Fargo is the only major U.S. bank with unionized branches; a branch in New Mexico became the first branch to unionize last December. The union election at the Apopka branch is scheduled for March 19.

» Florida Legislature passes blanket social media ban for kids under 16 Florida’s Republican-led Legislature passed a sweeping bill that would ban all kids under 16 from using social media — even with a parent’s permission — and would require everyone else in the Sunshine State to prove they are adults to continue using their online accounts. Within hours of the Senate’s vote, Gov. Ron DeSantis resurfaced his own objections to banning high school students who are 14 or 15 and whose parents might want to give their children access. “Parents need to have a role in this,” he said at a news conference. He added, “We can’t say 100% of the uses are bad.” He added that the legislation is “still under negotiation.” The Senate voted 23-14 to pass the bill, a priority of House Speaker Paul Renner and one of the most consequential and far-reaching pieces of legislation considered this year by lawmakers. The House voted later in the day 108-7 to pass the Senate’s version of the measure and send it to DeSantis for signature. The Senate vote was largely along party lines, except that five Republicans voted against the bill and two Democrats supported it. Debate on the Senate floor was rancorous. In the House, the only lawmakers who opposed it were Reps. LaVon Bracy Davis of Orlando, Daryl Campbell of Fort Lauderdale, Anna Eskamani of Orlando, Ashley Viola Gantt of Miami, Angela Nixon of Jacksonville and Felicia Simone Robinson of Miami Gardens — all Democrats. If signed by DeSantis, the law would go into effect July 1.

» DeSantis casts doubt on new Florida bill making it illegal to hog the left lane

Gov. Ron DeSantis said he plans to talk with law-enforcement officials before deciding whether to sign a bill that would bar motorists from cruising in the left lanes of highways. The Senate voted 37-0 to approve the measure (HB 317), which had earlier passed the House. During an appearance Friday in Pensacola, DeSantis said he wants to hear the practical implications for law officers tasked with enforcing the measure, which would apply to drivers on highways with at least two lanes in the same direction and speed limits of 65 mph or higher. “Are we going to be pulling people over for that? How would that work?” DeSantis said. The bill would prevent drivers from using left lanes unless they are passing other motorists, preparing to exit on ramps,

turning from left lanes, or directed to left lanes by officers or traffic-control devices. High occupancy vehicle lanes would be excluded from the term “furthermost left-hand lane.” The bill would set fines up to $158. The House voted 113-3 last week to pass the bill.

» Florida Senate and House to vote on bills targeting ‘community IDs’ issued to immigrants

The full Senate and House are poised to take up bills that would bar counties and municipalities from accepting identification cards or documents issued by groups to undocumented immigrants. The Republican-controlled Senate Rules Committee and House State Affairs Committee on Wednesday approved the measures (SB 1174 and HB 1451) amid opposition from Democrats. An immigration bill approved last year barred local governments from providing money for issuing identification cards, but a Senate staff analysis said “several counties” partnered with local organizations to issue such cards. Senate bill sponsor Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill, said the legislation is part of Florida being “at the forefront of fighting illegal immigration.” Critics say community IDs are used only to identify people and not for such things as driving. Jackson Oberlink, a lobbyist for the advocacy group Florida Rising criticized what he called “vague” parts of the proposal that would target organizations that issue such cards, which also are used by people who are in the country legally. “Community IDs are used by Floridians for things as simple as picking up their kids from school or picking up a prescription,” Oberlink said. The bills are positioned to go to the full Senate and House. (We’ll keep you posted on what happens.)

TRICKS ARE FOR KIDS

With their Legalize Wheels initiative, Orlando nonprofit Skate Bud looks to expand and improve Florida’s skateparks and empower at-risk youth

Florida may not be the first place your mind goes when you think of skateparks or skateboarding culture. And that’s fair: There’s a notable dearth of them in the Sunshine State compared to places like Long Beach in California — particularly parks that are wellkept, with infrastructure that’s suitable for all skill levels.

Even so, Florida actually has a rich cultural history of skateboarding. Florida, for instance, was the birthplace of the “ollie,” one of the most well-known skateboarding tricks. Its origins date back decades, to the 1970s.

“Our skate parks were so horrible back then, so kinky and over-vertical, that I kind of did an ollie by accident,” recalled Alan “Ollie” Gelfand, the inventor of the trick, in a story published by the Miami New Times in 2002. “That’s how we learned to do it, here in the skate parks of Florida.”

Zach Moldof, a Florida native and executive director of the youth empowerment non-profit

Skate Bud, today hopes to leverage that history to further a campaign to expand the number of skateparks in Florida communities that lack them, and to improve existing parks in communities that do.

For Moldof and his wife, Tiffany — the director of Skate Bud — it’s not a self-serving mission. Their nonprofit’s campaign, Legalize Wheels, is largely focused on empowering kids, particularly at-risk youth.

Local to Orlando, the couple’s campaign was borne out of their own difficult upbringings, as victims of childhood criminalization, and the benefits they’ve seen skateboarding provide for at-risk youth, both in Florida and their previous home in Los Angeles.

There, with dozens of skateparks in Los Angeles County alone, they worked with the city’s Parks & Recreation department to make skating more accessible for disenfranchised communities, before packing up and moving to Central Florida in 2022.

Moldof, a graduate of the University of Central Florida, already had some familiarity with the area, which offers comparatively fewer skating opportunities than L.A.

“It became a huge need to begin to advocate to improve the skatepark infrastructure, to be able to demonstrate what could be achieved through social services and public health when these spaces are activated with programming,” Moldof told Orlando Weekly.

Skate Bud’s advocacy-focused programming is multipronged: They provide free skateboards to kids, teach free skating lessons, and offer mentorship for both personal and career development. As someone who struggled to find his path in life after a troubled childhood, Moldof recognizes how important a helping hand can be.

Skateparks have, historically, carried negative connotations in the mainstream as gathering sites for social misfits, miscreants and troublemakers. Racial and gender stereotypes — such as the notion that skateparks are only for straight

white men — has also warped public perception. Moldof and other skateboard advocates reject this outdated characterization, and say skateparks can offer many benefits both for kids and communities at large.

A 2019 report from the University of Southern California’s Pullias Center for Education, based on a two-year study and titled “Beyond the Board,” outlines how skateboarding can help facilitate a sense of community, offer a healthy outlet for physical activity, and foster skills like perseverance and resilience.

It can also broadly help kids relieve stress and have fun — something that may not seem especially significant on its face, but which can, in this day and age, actually hold a lot of weight.

The coronavirus pandemic, for instance, proved a particularly challenging time for children’s mental health. More than one-third of U.S. high schoolers in 2021 reported experiencing poor mental health during the pandemic, according to a CDC survey, and 44% reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless in the past year. This has been particularly pronounced in teen girls.

And sure, there are other ways for kids to get active. Hit up a basketball court, for instance. Moldof argues, however, that unlike traditional sports that have long-standing institutional support, skateboarding can offer other, unique benefits for kids who have experienced trauma or have an unstable home environment.

“The way that I understand it, from my personal experience, is like when you are exposed to significant trauma as a young person, you stop feeling like you have control,” he explained.“And then you try to seize control in whatever means you have access to.”

Seizing control may look like trying to find some way to cope with, or respond to, that sense of powerlessness that a lack of control can instill — a sense that may be even more pronounced in people from disenfranchised communities who live in poverty, or who are otherwise marginalized on account of their socioeconomic status, skin color, ethnicity or other characteristics.

Childhood trauma is a major risk factor for substance use disorders and mental health conditions such as eating disorders, which can have long-term consequences for a person’s health and well-being, and their ability to fully participate in society. Kids who experience trauma — such as domestic or sexual abuse — may also act out or engage in other risky behaviors that can have long-term consequences without early intervention.

Moldof says that traditional sports may not be able to meet the needs of every kid who has had these experiences.

“If you’re a young kid who’s experienced significant trauma, and then you’re being told by the city or the county, like, ‘Oh, participate in our football program! That’s going to help you.’ … Without a doubt, that will work for some kids,” he says. “But for the majority of kids who are the ones that are willing to go out and get a gun, or

like, do something self-destructive, that sports programming where an authority figure tells you what you can and can’t do before you have access to the benefits, it simply doesn’t work.”

Skateboarding, he argues, removes that. “It’s all about self-actualization,” he explains. “It’s all about, you know … ‘I decide what trick I want to try next. I decide if I did it well enough, or if I want to do it again. I decide if I’m gonna go skate today. I decide if I’m done skating right now.’”

Research has found that conventional youth sports can help reduce the long-term risk of anxiety and depression in people with childhood trauma, but they can also be cost-prohibitive for low-income families. So can gym memberships.

Furthermore, most team sports have a winner and a loser. You can argue all day in favor of the benefits of not being a “winner” all the time, but Moldof argues that for a kid who’s already marginalized, who’s getting that societal message that they’re screwed unless they follow the

rules outlined by the powers that be, sometimes you just need to take winning and losing out of the equation.

“We have no means for really acknowledging or addressing the negative aspects where you’re not going to win every time,” Moldof says.

Access to quality skateparks in Florida, however, is relatively scarce. Unlike other common youth sports, skateboarding is not generally available through institutional settings, like schools or gym facilities, where children often get introduced to athletic activities.

According to Skate Bud, Florida (population 21.8 million) has about 153 public skateparks, whereas there are 90 in Los Angeles County alone (population 9.8 million). Of Florida’s skateparks, the nonprofit estimates that roughly 93% fall below basic usability standards.

Florida statutes give local governments and public institutions the ability to create public skateparks that are free of liability, but current

law does not provide any guidelines for usability, to help account for factors like accessibility, infrastructure or maintenance.

Take the Orlando Skate Park, for example, located in the Milk District near downtown. The park’s not dilapidated, sure. But its infrastructure, Moldof argues, may be “prohibitive” to people who are new to skating. “It prioritizes a type of skateboarding that you can’t learn at that park,” he explains.“You have to be an expert at it from skating somewhere else.”

It also highlights a division between rampstyle skating and street-style skating. The latter can be more accessible, because all that’s really needed for street skating is smooth terrain, but ramp skating, with its half-pipes and dramatic drop-ins, is what’s prioritized in most of Florida’s skateparks.

Skate Bud has a history of working with local governments and other community organizations to develop skatepark programming, and has been in talks locally with staff and elected leaders in Orange County and Winter Park. The city of Orlando, Moldof says, has been less consistent in their communications with him (and he hasn’t been afraid to call them out on this during public comment period at city council meetings).

Their latest step in the Legalize Wheels campaign, however, has an even broader goal — not just to add skate programming, but to increase the number of skateparks in specific sectors of Florida and to upgrade infrastructure at the ones that already exist.

State Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, has put in a state appropriations request this year for $3.7 million to fund Legalize Wheels, which would go toward developing skateparks and skatepark programming in 10 “sectors” covering 19 counties — Orange as well as Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Duval, Gadsden, Hillsborough, Jefferson, Lee, Leon, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, Seminole, Volusia and Wakulla.

The bulk of those funds — $3.1 million — would be invested in the construction of new

THE LITERAL COST OF LIVING

skateparks and renovations to existing sites. There would also be a $553,000 investment in staffing, training, mentorship and consultant work; and salaries for an executive director and assistant director, totaling a modest $45,000 and $48,000 respectively, according to the request.

In a statement to Orlando Weekly , Rep. Eskamani said that she believes the requested funds would be able to demonstrate the positive impact that skateparks can have for communities.

“Most communities in Florida still do not have access to skateparks, nor is there robust programming to utilize already existing skateparks for youth development and community intervention,” she said.“We want to change that, and this state funding request would be transformational towards that effort.”

The nonprofit Skate Bud has also submitted a $25,000 grant request for fiscal year 2024-25 with the Florida Department of Arts & Cultural Affairs, specifically for the creation of an annual Florida Skate Heritage Fair that would be held in Orange County.

Moldof envisions it as a “world-class exposition” that would not only provide local job opportunities, but also emphasize skating’s roots in Florida in a way that is both celebratory and educational.

Florida isn’t just the birthplace of the ollie, after all. It’s also home to the world’s oldest operating skate park — Kona Skate Park — in Jacksonville. Then there’s Skateboard City in Daytona Beach (RIP), which was the first concrete skatepark to open in the United States. The Bro Bowl, in Tampa, was also the first U.S. skatepark to be listed on a national registry of historical places. Other skating techniques and pivotal figures in skateboard culture — such as skateboard legend and Gainesville native Rodney Mullen — also have ties to Florida.

“People believe that skateboarding comes from California and from surfers, and that’s true in part. But street skating really starts here,” said Moldof. “And it will be so beneficial for our state to begin to take ownership of that heritage.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Orange County is poised to use federal pandemic relief funds to cancel medical debt. If approved, it would be the first county in Florida to move forward with such an initiative

Orange County commissioners decided after a lengthy discussion last Tuesday to dedicate a portion of unused federal pandemic relief funds to wipe out medical debt for hundreds of thousands of debt-burdened residents.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, a priority of the Biden administration, allocated $350 billion for state and local

governments to provide economic relief for individuals, families and businesses.

Orange County, which received a total $270.8 million in funds, had about $23 million left to allocate, with a limited amount of time to do so. According to county staff, the county needed to have all of their funding financially obligated by the

end of 2024, and spent by the end of 2026. Other proposals — dedicating funds for affordable housing, job assistance for the unemployed, and filling a budgetary shortfall for a new fire station — were also approved on Tuesday.

Medical debt, a problem exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, is a leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States,

affecting more than two in five U.S. adults.

Central Florida Jobs With Justice, a nonprofit coalition of local labor unions and social advocacy groups that support the initiative, estimates that a quarter-million residents in Orange County alone — roughly 17% of the county population — are saddled with medical debt, which affects not just low-income households, but middle-income households as well.

“We know that poverty and financial instability are systemic issues at their core, not individual failings,” said Tara “Glitter” Felten, an organizer with CFJWJ, during the public comment period of the board’s Tuesday meeting.

Over 90% of the U.S. population has some form of health insurance. But health insurance alone can be insufficient to cover the cost of a major medical procedure, treatment for cancer or chronic illness. The United States, to date, is the only industrialized country that doesn’t guarantee health care for its citizens through universal healthcare coverage.

For some, it can take just one accident, one unexpected health emergency for someone to be saddled with thousands of dollars in debt.

“Just because someone has insurance doesn’t necessarily mean that they will not incur medical debt [due] to out-of-pocketcost, deductibles and co-pays,” said Warren Lakhan, a family services administrator for Orange County, in a presentation to the board.

The initial request from CFJWJ, based on debt estimates in Orange County, was an $8.7 million allocation for the project.

With that $8.7 million investment, using leftover funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, the county could have canceled an estimated $827 million in medical debt for 300,000 residents.

Eventually, county commissioners settled on a $4.5 million figure — aiming to balance the progressive initiative with other spending priorities.

Orange County would be the first county in Florida to launch such an initiative, according to county staff — but it would join a growing wave of other local governments across the country doing the same. It also signifies a critical way in which Orange County can take action to address debt burdens negatively affecting working families without having to wait for action from the state.

Eimar Roy, a local resident and primary caregiver of two children, told Orange County leaders that she never thought she would find herself with medical debt. Then the pandemic hit. She became unemployed and then, became sick with COVID-19. “I am one of the unfortunate people that had pre-existing conditions that … basically caused permanent heart and other damage,” she shared. “This is not something that I was responsible for.”

Dr. Jennifer Ferreira, who works as a clinical pharmacist in a local emergency room, told commissioners that in her work she sees the damage medical debt can cause, like patients with chronic illnesses who aren’t taking their prescribed medication because they can’t afford it, or because they’re already in debt, or are uninsured. She shared the story of one woman — an older woman in her 60s who’d recently lost her health insurance and who was struggling to find affordable housing — as an example.

“This patient wasn’t able to take any of her high cholesterol, blood pressure or diabetic medications, resulting in her body going into quite literal crisis,” said Ferreira. “I really urge you guys to do this so I don’t have to see my patients struggling to access the bare necessities they deserve.”

According to KFF, about 14 million people (or 6% of adults) in the U.S. owe more than $1,000 in medical debt. About 3 million people (1% of adults) owe medical debt of more than $10,000.

nonprofit, and local governments they’ve worked with about how this could work in practice.

Lakhan, the family services administrator, said that because of how the process works, there’s no need to apply for medical debt relief through the program. Instead, people who have their debt cleared would receive a letter in the mail notifying them that their debt had been erased.

Medical bills can trap debtors in a ‘doom loop.’ Debt can hurt their credit, causing a cascade of other financial hardships; it can also lead them to delay seeking necessary medical care, while stress can cause further health issues.

The idea of using ARPA funds to cancel medical debt isn’t novel. The Associated Press reported last year that an increasing number of municipal, county and state governments — including New Orleans; Cook County, Illinois; and Toledo, Ohio — had opted to leverage portions of their federal pandemic relief funds to eliminate residents’ medical debt.

The wave of local governments opting in, according to NPR, is only growing. New York City recently hopped on board last month, and Wayne County, Michigan is also considering a similar proposal. The first was Cook County, Illinois — home to Chicago — which pledged $12 million in ARPA funds to the cause in 2022 through a partnership with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt. As of last October, the county had abolished over $280 million in medical debt, benefiting 158,541 residents.

Orange County has also been in talks with RIP Medical Debt, a New York-based

RIP Medical Debt, founded in 2014, is able to identify unpaid medical bills owed by people making up to four times the federal poverty level or whose medical bills total more than 5% of their annual household income. They work with local governments, individuals, organizations — anyone who wants to donate to the cause.

Through agreements with hospitals and health care providers, RIP Medical Debt buys debt in bundles at a fraction of the cost. For every $1 appropriated, about $100 in medical debt can be canceled. “So there is a lot of leverage in terms of the benefit provided,” said Lakhan.

Over the past decade, the nonprofit has wiped out more than $10 billion in debt, helping more than 7.1 million families, according to their website.

Central Florida Jobs With Justice initially requested an $8.7 million investment for the initiative. County staff conducted interviews with other local governments who had worked with the nonprofit, as well as the staff of RIP Medical Debt themselves to learn more about not just how the project works, but how well it’s worked.

Demings sat in for some of these discussions himself.

Medical bills can trap a person in a “doom loop” between their insurance and their healthcare provider. Debt itself can hurt a person’s credit, and can pressure a person who is uninsured or who has fewer financial means to delay seeking additional medical care. It

can also affect a family’s ability to cover other basic living expenses.

The problem, according to county staff, was that they’d already earmarked funds for other initiatives that could be funded using ARPA dollars. Those other proposals were: $5 million for affordable housing, $5 million to extend a contract with Career Source for job assistance services, $7.7 million for a new fire station (necessary due to a budget shortfall, apparently), $1 million for the Second Harvest food bank, and $4.3 million for homelessness and mental health services.

That is, there was no money left for the $8.7 million medical debt relief plan.

County staff say this is because Central Florida Jobs With Justice — the nonprofit leading the push — came to them with the idea after they’d already put together their allocation wish list.

Commissioner Mike Scott — the board’s newest addition, elected in 2022 — was against cutting the funds already allocated to the Career Source contract, but said he was “certainly in favor” of the idea of pursuing a medical debt relief program. “I’ve had a number of medical debt [sic] in a couple of years that did affect my credit quite severely.”

But there was disagreement on numbers. Commissioner Emily Bonilla wanted to slash out the money allocated to Career Source entirely to help fund the medical debt cancellation. Scott fought for a $2.5 million compromise — a 50% cut — and had some concerns about CFJWJ’s initial $8.7 million figure.

Demings, who fought surprisingly hard to ensure the debt initiative wasn’t axed, also asked county staff to see if the county could find $2 million for the fire station through other means, in order to free up some of that $7.7 million pot, too.

Altogether, the commission was able to agree on a $4.5 million figure for medical debt cancellation through both cuts. This means less debt would be canceled, likely aiding fewer people. The allocation is still subject to final approval, and should be on the board’s consent agenda for a final vote sometime this spring, a county spokesperson confirmed.

“This budget has to balance at the end of the day,” Demings conceded.

Central Florida Jobs With Justice celebrated the achievement on Instagram, with the caveat that they plan on organizing for the full $8.7 million ahead of the final vote.

“Today is a testament to the organizing efforts and unwavering persistence of community leaders who amplified their stories and fearlessly championed those burdened by medical debt,” the nonprofit posted on social media. “It not only underscores our collective power, but the notion that behind every policy charge are working people committed to uplifting their communities.”

JUMP AT THE SUN

Orlando celebrates Black History Month in art at City Hall’s Terrace Gallery

To celebrate Black History Month, this year the city of Orlando has brought 26 Black artists to the Terrace Gallery in City Hall, and six to CityArts in the Rogers-Kiene Building. Both group exhibits showcase Central Florida’s Black creatives, and document the local African American experience with unusual depth and honesty.

At the Terrace Gallery, an open call to artists was the first step to this juried exhibit, and the selection process yielded some amazing pieces. While portraits predominate, the exhibit’s essence lies somewhere between contemporary social realism and a gorgeous “jump at the sun” spirit.

Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and other Black artists earn honored places here, while Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass, Ruby Bridges and other civil rights movement figures form an important

foundation to the show. The familiar faces seem to introduce the viewer to other figures: Kathleen Battle’s beautiful, smooth face stares starkly out of the canvas in Victor Wilson’s “Opera Diva.” Ronald Kelly’s postage-stamp paintings honoring Black artists exalts Nikki Giovanni, Edmonia Lewis and Florida’s own Augusta Savage, a sculptor from Green Cove Springs who participated in the Harlem Renaissance. (Savage and Lewis do in fact have USPS stamps designed in their honor; Giovanni, though deserving, yet awaits. She joked in 2016 that “you have to be dead to be on a stamp.” No hurry, please.) These are glimpses of the past, present and future of the African American experience, as painted by African American artists. Just as art’s social realism movement brought home the stark reality of the Great Depression, contemporary social realist art brings home the stark reality of the Black experience. Alexandra Vasconcelos’ “God

Sees the Inside” is a beautiful silver-leaf collage on canvas. Three children are engrossed in grooming one another; the quote “we see the outside, God sees the inside” appears upside-down, a poignant message of dignity and pride. Delia Miller’s triptych “Journey to Resilience” begins with apocryphal images from the Middle Passage and Jim Crow Era, culminating in achievements of the now. If one turns to Delia Miller’s “Sistas,” this incredible ink-on-paper drawing swells upward with joy, music, hair and balloons. Jordan Jones, whose work also appears at the CityArts show, leaves the viewer with a delicious portrait titled “Hov-squiat,” rendering the legendary hip-hop artist and husband of Beyoncé rather Basquiatically.

It’s a melding of Black creativity, and a taste of local African American artistic talent one would like to see more of all year around. arts@orlandoweekly.com

Mama’s Comedy Show leaves I-Drive and finds a new home downtown for their outrageous improv in Ten10 Brewing Co.’s B-Side room

You might try to knock Mama out, but you can’t keep her cousins down for long.

After 15 solid years — aside from a pandemic pause — performing their outrageous brand of improvisational comedy at Sleuths Mystery Dinner Shows on International Drive, Mama’s Comedy Show (mamascomedyshow.com) recently found a new home downtown inside Ten10 Brewing Co.’s B-Side event space.

I attended last Friday’s official launch of their open-ended weekly run, where I talked with company owner Todd Feren and troupe member (aka “cousin”) Jaimz Dillman to learn how this funny family has laughed together for so long.

Feren and Dillman both say they were first bitten by the improvisation bug as high-school students. Feren learned some basic improv exercises during drama class, but found he enjoyed them more offstage. “I had more fun playing [improv] games with my friends because it was just pals messing with each other, trying to crack each other up, and really bonding as a group of friends through laughs.”

Dillman saw a SAK Comedy Lab show and says she was instantly hooked by the performers “making magic on stage, without a script, all off the top of their heads. They were being

celebrated for being quick and funny and I had to be a part of it.”

Mama’s Comedy Show has its origins in Doodie Humor, a satirical sketch comedy troupe Feren wrote and directed for at the Orlando Fringe Festival.

“I asked the rest of the group if they wanted to do an improv show — 90 percent of the cast was a hard ‘no’ on unscripted comedy. [Mama’s member] A. Ali Flores was the only ‘Yes,’” recalls Feren, adding,“I actually didn’t really enjoy improv, but I loved the idea of flying by the seat of my pants.”

After “seven years of begging,” the owners of Sleuths gave the troupe a one-month trial, which turned into 15 years.

“We’re not an improv show. We are a comedy show that does improv,” Feren tells new performers, emphasizing that Mama’s shows are more about “building a relationship with the audience and making each show feel more like friends or family putting on a show in the living room.”

Dillman echoes the importance of that “family” dynamic — everyone onstage and in the audience is called “cousin” — saying that she calls their performances her “weekly therapy session with the brothers I never wanted. We don’t single people out and make fun of them. We’re too busy making fun of each other.”

After a decade and a half at Sleuths, new management took over that dinner theater’s daily operations, leading to conflicts over scheduling and policy changes.“Ultimately, it was best to get away from the place we called home for so many years,” says Feren. Though, he admits, “When we announced we were leaving Sleuths, we didn’t have a backup plan.”

Fortunately, the cast quickly connected with the Virginia Drive brewery’s B-Side room through local artist Christian Kelty (Joe’s NYC Bar Angry Elves).“So far, things [at Ten10] have been amazing,” Feren reports. “They have been very supportive of the show, and have really gone out of their way to make us feel at home. The first two shows sold out completely, and future shows are filling up extremely fast.”

Dillman con curs, adding, “The space really works well for our vibe, while also giv ing us a few new pretty great upgrades” — like improved food and beverage options available before and during the show.

One thing that hasn’t changed is Mama’s modest $15 ticket price for their two-hour shows,

nor the generous discounts given to returning patrons bearing punch cards.

“The reason our show has always been so inexpensive is because we want everyone to be able to come,” says Feren. “We were asked to change our price several years ago, and while I agree that we provide a show worth a lot more, it’s more important to us that people don’t feel nickel-and-dimed. People know when they’re being taken advantage of, and that’s not what Mama’s is about.”

Beyond Mama’s adults-only show every Friday night, they also perform weekly family-friendly shows at a local resort in the theme park area. Feren is also hoping to expand later this year by revitalizing “Papa’s Cirque Du So Lame,” a variety show he originally started during the pandemic to “get money to some of my Cirque performer friends who were out of work while our usual variety show was temporarily out of commission. It was a brief but sold-out run, and we learned a lot about what we were capable of.”

Last but not least, pearl-clutchers searching in vain for SAK’s Scum Box should know that Mama’s shows earn their hard R-rating for language and content. (Clean-cut SAK makes anyone using crude material wear a box on their head for a minute.)

“If you’re offended easily, stay home. This is definitely a show for adults to come out and have good adult fun,” says Dillman. “We just want to put on the best show possible. The show Mama would’ve wanted.”

COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders — Duplass Brothers Productions and Stardust Frames (makers of the utopia-puncturing 2018 documentary Wild Wild Country) investigate the death of journalist Danny Casolaro, who many believe was murdered while investigating a shadowy extra-governmental initiative he called The Octopus. TL; DR for your uncle with the RFK Jr. sign in his yard: It’s the Jews again. (Netflix)

Code 8: Part II — Five years after their outlaw activities landed them in very different places, superpowered accomplices-of-convenience Connor and Garrett reunite to defy a corrupt police force that claims to have renounced brutality, but is merely finding more clandestine ways to exercise it. I think we already saw this in 2022, when it was called “Val Demings’ campaign ads.” (Netflix)

Iwájú — The Nigeria of the future is the setting for an animated series in which a couple of kids explore the hidden wonders of their hightech world. Afrofuturism is a great thing to get your little ones into, but you should probably wait until they’re older to explain the rest of George Clinton’s œuvre. (Disney+)

The Mire Millennium — The final season of Polish crime drama The Mire centers on the disappearance of a newspaper editor, with a veteran journalist as the prime suspect. I guess it would be in poor taste for me to use this space to ask for a raise. [Editor’s note: Done.] (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Li’l Stompers — The final six episodes of Season 1 bring six more chances for the baby dinos to have fun while learning about the world around them. Two of the most salient lessons: “What is an asteroid?”; “How to return library books.” (Peacock)

The Parades — A Japanese woman joins the ranks of the restless dead who are desperate to reestablish contact with the land of the living. Which is still going to be easier than the position Dean Phillips has put himself in. (Netflix)

Reina Roja — When an anonymous criminal starts targeting the children of the Madrid elite, the police have to rely on the deductive capabilities of the smartest person in the world. That must be tough on them, because they’re used to just shooting wildly into the air and arresting whomever the bullet hits. (Prime Video)

A Round of Applause — This oddball Turkish series portrays the angst of a family man who pines for the simpler, happier life he once knew. Cheer up, President Erdogan: The world will learn to tell you and Viktor Orbán apart one of these days. (Netflix)

You Are Not Alone: Fighting the Wolf Pack — Revisit the outrage that erupted in 2016 when five men raped a young woman during Spain’s Festival of San Fermín, but were initially convicted only of “sexual abuse” because the prosecution couldn’t prove they

had used force. Even dodgier, it turns out they had all misidentified the victim as their ex-wife. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre — The 2022 Nigerian fantasy feature Aníkúlápó gets an offshoot series that’s meant to enshrine the franchise as the Game of Thrones of the Yoruba people. Sounds fun, but when are we finally gonna get the Bridgerton of the Igbo? (Netflix)

Blood & Water — Season 4 of the South African teen drama finds Puleng (Ama Qamata) trying to focus on completing her senior year but being distracted by somebody’s attempt to blackmail her with a sex tape. Fortunately, it isn’t her sex tape, and the blackmailers are just really, really dumb. (Netflix)

The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin — The legend of the real-life British highwayman gets a winking deconstruction in this six-episode comedy-adventure series starring Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh and The Great British Bake-Off. Ever seen a coach get held up by a guy who’s brandishing an éclair? Gut-busting stuff. (Apple TV+)

Furies — The question at the heart of this French crime drama: “Can one woman broker peace between the six families of the Parisian underworld?” I dunno, it sounds like a tall order unless she’s careful to bring enough Gitanes and Serge Gainsbourg records for everybody. (Netflix)

Maamla Legal Hai — A fictional law office is the setting of an Indian sitcom that has idealistic newcomers rubbing up against cynical old-timers. Oddly enough, being an idealistic newcomer who’s willing to rub up against a cynical old-timer is also a requirement for getting hired at Rudy Giuliani’s firm. (Netflix)

Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and Megamind Rules — A new animated feature and series bring big changes for the blueskinned alien: He’s now a hero instead of a villain, and Will Ferrell is no longer providing his voice. That job goes to Keith Ferguson, who likewise took over for Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen in the Cars franchise. Wow, the guy’s like a human AI. (Peacock)

My Name Is Loh Kiwan — Trying to forge a new life for himself in Belgium, a refugee from North Korea meets and falls in love with a countrywoman who’s made that change but still isn’t happy. See? Everybody should just appreciate what they have and stay put. (Except you, Texas. You can go.) (Netflix)

Selling the Hamptons — Season 2 takes us back to the tail end of the initial COVID surge, when the Hamptons real-estate market became so suddenly and fiercely competitive that the brokers almost came to blows. Seriously, and there are people who still think that pandemic wasn’t dangerous? (Max)

Somebody Feed Phil — Local establishments like East End Market, Sampaguita, Crocante and Bánh Mì Boy are among the eateries Phil Rosenthal visits in Season 7 of his culinary travelogue, as he searches for “the real Orlando” in between visits to markedly less exotic locales like Kyoto, Iceland and Dubai. But wait a minute: I always thought “the real Orlando” was PF Chang’s when the paralegals show up for happy hour. (Netflix)

Spaceman — How’s this for an unlikely setup? Johan Renck (Chernobyl) directs Adam Sandler as an astronaut who gets unlikely counsel from a stowaway alien lifeform (Paul Dano) to help him manage his painful feelings toward his wife (Carey Mulligan). Things were so much easier when they just gnawed their way out of your chest and left you for dead. Spouses, I mean. (Netflix)

Premieres Sunday:

The Netflix Slam — Admit it: When you saw that title, you thought they had finally come up with a new euphemism to replace “Netflix and chill.” Instead, what we’re getting is a tennis match between men’s singles champ Rafael Nadal and second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz. If you don’t like sports, you can always just Peacock and fist. (Netflix)

Premieres Monday:

Hot Wheels: Let’s Race — The iconic toy brand is the inspiration for an animated kids’ show about young race-car drivers with a yen for death-defying stunts. To no one’s surprise, they all get buried under a heap of twisted wreckage when that 360° loop-the-loop doesn’t work no matter how high you put the track. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Hannah Gadsby’s Gender Agenda — The acclaimed Australian writer-performer hosts a showcase of seven genderqueer comics that was recorded at London’s Alexandra Palace Theatre. Of course they couldn’t do it here in America, because Dave Chappelle has a sniper on every rooftop. (Netflix)

The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping — Documentary filmmaker Katherine Kubler chronicles the horrors she and others endured at a brutally oppressive school for troubled youth. If you want to experience a rough approximation of what they went through, try watching this show with someone else’s password. (Netflix)

PROGRESSIVE PARTY

Rep. Maxwell Frost brings MadSoul Music Festival to Orlando this weekend

The MadSoul Music Festival, curated by U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, congressman from Florida’s 10th District, takes place Saturday at Loch Haven Park. MadSoul is a music fest with a difference, intertwining performances and art with advocacy and activism. Festivalgoers will hear from local and national civic leaders as well as music from Muna, Palomino Blond, Kaelin Ellis, I Met A Yeti, Nohemy and more. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Anna Eskamani and Rep. Justin Jones are just a few of the civic leaders speaking between sets at MadSoul. Frost started MadSoul in Orlando with his friends Niyah Lowell and Chris Murie back in 2015, and they’ve used the proceeds from each iteration of the festival to support mutual aid in the community. The proceeds this year will go partially toward the A Love Supreme PAC, which donates to local abortion funds, and to some other LGBTQ+ and community organizations. This year’s MadSoul is the most ambitious undertaking yet, with performers doing their thing on two separate stages in Loch Haven Park. Here are our picks for the absolute can’t-miss sets:

Muna are a queer band that actively use their growing platform for unabashed activism while making music that fans resonate with and dance to. This made the group ideal headliners for MadSoul (well, that and incredible songs). The indie-pop band have

notably toured with Taylor Swift and are climbing the charts and racking up award nominations all over.

Lin-Manuel Miranda — known for having taken Broadway by storm with his original productions Hamilton and In the Heights — is also an outspoken advocate for reproductive rights, social and political causes related to Puerto Rico, and diversity and better representation in the arts and government. A local student choir will introduce and “play on” Miranda with a song from Hamilton, before he speaks about, well, whatever the hell he wants.

Maddie Barker is a singer, songwriter and producer from Orlando. She was formerly a part of rap and arts collective seeyousoon and she’s now out on her own as a solo artist. Barker’s solo work is emotive, adventurous and passionate music that mixes pop with electronic textures and hip-hop. The artist’s goal is to help listeners “escape from the adversity of the modern age.”

Nohemy, originally from Puerto Rico but based in Orlando, is a singer, rapper and songwriter who specializes in Latin dance and reggaeton music. No less than the WNBA used her “Game Boy” single to mark the league’s 25th anniversary. Live, Nohemy is an artist not to be missed, entrancing audiences with her storytelling through music and the energy she exudes on stage.

ROCK THE VOTERS

Maxwell Frost talks MadSoul

What made now the right time to bring back MadSoul?

This is something that as soon as I was elected, I called my friend Niyah [Lowell] who founded this with me and I said,“Now that the campaign’s over, we can do MadSoul again.”

Then I got this idea that, you know, MadSoul has always been a very political endeavor. We’ve always donated our proceeds to local nonprofits. So why wouldn’t we just do the same thing, but through the campaign? For a couple of reasons. No. 1, we have more resources to be able to make the festival really what it should be. But No. 2, that way we can involve more organizations that are doing really good work locally in Orlando, and support and help them. So that’s why we ultimately decided to bring it back but through the campaign.

Combining advocacy and aesthetics can be a tricky thing. Do it wrong and it’s joyless.

The big purpose of MadSoul is advocacy, supporting local groups and bringing the arts and advocacy together, and one of our mottoes in our offices is that we’re always looking for ways to bridge the gap between “cool” and “consciousness.” I think music and the arts give us the opportunity to do that in a different way. There’s a very fine line between cringe and cool and we’re trying to do things here in an authentic way.

Tell me about putting the lineup together.

We put together a wishlist and we went out and we got pretty damned close. But where it ends up is where it was supposed to be. I wanted it to be a really good balance of local and national, but focusing on local. If you look at the lineup, most of our artists are from Florida, and are from Orlando.

MadSoul is a multigenre festival. For instance, before you’re going to see Lin-Manuel speak, there will be local students that do a Hamilton song, and then right after that, on that same stage, we have I Met a Yeti performing — an Orlando-based post-hardcore band. MadSoul is like a playlist that I’ve made for everybody and we’re all just listening to it live together.

It’s a two-way street. The audience trusts you to curate a good lineup but then you trust them to go on the entire journey with you.

It’s a risk, right? I’ll tell you something that we’re struggling with right now on the creative

side. With MadSoul we made this decision that we would never put out set times like other music festivals do. And the reason being is when you have much bigger artists and a few regional artists and local artists, sometimes a lot of the audience might only come to see the big artist they want to see. But the purpose of MadSoul is to really expand people’s palates, get people to listen to local music and see what we have going on here in Central Florida.

I like that you don’t release set times; that’s such a noise-show thing to do. We want people to come and stay the whole time and check out all the amazing artists and speakers that will be there. We have some great local artists who have a big following. Performers like Kaelin Ellis, a great artist who lives here and who’s been really killing it and working with some really big artists nationally. Nohemy, who’s built a big name for herself in reggaeton, she’s originally from Puerto Rico but she lives in Orlando. We have Palomino Blond from Miami, who we’ve booked before. And who doesn’t love Palomino Blond? It’s just going to be a great day.

Will you make time to take in any music at the fest?

There’s a team of actual producers doing the day-to-day, but I’ll be running around doing a bunch of different things. My main job prefestival was booking the lineup, and I’ll be there to make sure that everything goes well with our artists. But I’ll be floating around. I’m going to enjoy a lot of the sets and try to be present for everybody speaking, for everyone playing, because No. 1, I’m a fan. I love going to shows. But also, I just want folks to see that I’m there to support these artists.

LOCAL RELEASES

Sean Shakespeare and Eighth Letter (né Harley Rendsland) have been figures of note in Orlando’s indie-rap scene for years as an MC and a producer, respectively. They’ve built names as individual artists, running and rhyming in the same illustrious circles as each other alongside stars and collaborators like E-Turn and Swamburger. Recently, the two officially joined considerable forces as DNA, an acronym for Defining Natural Arrangement.

DNA are a new act but their deepening synergy was already foreshadowed last year on Eighth Letter’s recent album Far Too Close, on which Shakespeare was by far the most featured guest. While they’ve given glimpses onstage with some opening performances around town, DNA are now making their recorded debut with a brand-new eponymous mini-album that just dropped this week.

Across these six tracks, Eighth Letter’s production is judiciously minimal, allowing the vocals and atmosphere ample space to weave their somnambulant spell. It’s a notable move that puts the evolution of Shakespeare’s vocals on full display. Here, his distinguished years of rapping and his recent expansion into singing with rock band Audible Parts converge and, more importantly, synthesize.

Sean Shakespeare and Eighth Letter, figures of note in Orlando’s indie-rap scene, have joined forces as DNA, unleashing an album of adventurous latenight introspection in Far Too Close.

appearance even by her own golden standard. Shakespeare’s new range, though, takes the spotlight in this noteworthy debut, and the main plot is the auspicious chemistry between him and Eighth Letter. DNA now streams everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Ekkstacy, Alexsucks: When Purity Ring came to town in 2022, I made it a point to note that opener Ekkstacy was worth particular attention. Not gonna rub your face in it and say I told you so, but the ascendant young Canadian artist is now coming back as a headliner. His sound is an intriguing amalgam of post-punk, indiepop and cloud-rap that sparkles with melodic instinct. It’s an incredibly modern and effective combination that’s rocketed his profile since he last came here two years ago. Ekkstacy will arrive on the hype of his strong new self-titled sophomore album, so expect to see the bright spark of a shooting new star. L.A. opener Alexsucks will get bodies moving early with their danceable, Strokes-esque rock. (6 p.m. Friday, March 1, The Social, $20)

Daði Freyr: Pop star Daði Freyr is perhaps Iceland’s brightest export right now. While his appeal is broad enough to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest, his style packs a quirky, left-field sensibility that’s consistently fresh. As infectious as his spry pop songs are, what makes Daði Freyr a must-see live is his presence, which is equal parts curiosity and charisma. (7 p.m. Friday, March 1, The Plaza Live, $27.50-$42.50)

Danny Kamins, Thomas Milovac, Jonas Van den Bossche, Some Pepper: This loaded night of improvised experimentation will surround an accomplished Texan with some leading locals. Headlining is Danny Kamins, an avant-garde Houston saxophonist who’s made noise with an illustrious list of luminaries that includes Tatsuya Nakatani, Alvin Fielder, Ra Kalam Bob Moses, LaDonna Smith and many others. Opening will be jazz adventurist Thomas Milovac, noise guitarist Jonas Van den Bossche and a special performance by Some Pepper, the noise incarnation of enigmatic crooner Charmaine’s Names. There’s a suggested cover charge, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. (8 p.m. Monday, March 4, The Falcon, $5-$10 suggested)

Amid Eighth Letter’s purposefully spare boom-bap backdrop, Shakespeare slinks back and forth between singing and rapping with a fluidity that’s more like organic flow than forced fusion. It’s a soulful effect that’s ideally suited for this record’s late-night introspection. Bolstering the collection are guest cameos by local MCs Leroy Sly and E-Turn in an exceptionally silky

Pentagram String Band: Some country bros these days sure think they’re edgelords with their social views. But the misanthropic Pentagram String Band skip all that stupid-ass bad-boy posing and just go straight-up satanic. This Missouri group’s gothabilly sound is rooted in bluegrass but drips with punk attitude and metal blood. With a lyrical penchant for death, murder and cannibalism, they’re like an unholy merger of Appalachian folk sounds and Norwegian black-metal tendencies. Central Florida Fair

The annual Central Florida Fair returns this week with classic fair food and attractions, plus some bizarre new additions. Fairgoers can enjoy the classics — livestock exhibitions, interactive midway games and fried food — and there will be no shortage of extracurricular entertainment options with micro-wrestling, stunt

performances, pony rides and stilt-walkers. Bizarre Boulevard, the newest addition to the fair, features a haunted house [yes!], glass-blowing, chainsaw juggling, tarot readings, live art and more. The fair is also host to one of the largest livestock shows in the state, featuring auctions and competitions running throughout. The live music is coming in hot, too: Rising country singer Hannah Dasher performs a free concert

(March 4), and there’s a local Battle of the Bands in the Beer Garden (March 1-3) — also, yes, there’s a beer garden. The Central Florida Fair runs through March 10. Central Florida Fairgrounds, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, centralfloridafair.com, $10-$15. — Alexandra Sullivan

SATURDAY, MARCH 2

Alkaline Trio

Veteran dark-punks Alkaline Trio hit the City Beautiful right in the broken hearts this week when their “Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs Tour” comes to town — the only stop in Florida for the threesome. The band’s forebodingly named tour is the same as their newest and 10th album, out earlier this year on Rise Records. The Trio is down one member, as drummer Derek Grant left soon after the recording of Blood, leaving frontman Matt Skiba and bassist Dan Andriano to soldier on with new drummer Atom Willard. And the band are soldiering on in a big way, currently out on their first headlining tour in six years. Alkaline Trio has been active for nearly three decades and are using this tour as an occasion to dig deep into their discography as well as show o the musical leap that is Blood. Despite the oft-unrelenting bleakness of their lyrics and the goth-adjacent shades overlaying their pop-punk sounds, the Trio are feeling valedictory. Dare they call this a victory lap? “Alkaline Trio have gone far and beyond any hopes we had for our success,” confessed Skiba to Kerrang recently. All the way to Orlando, even. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, houseofblues.com, $34.50$85. —

Monster Jam

Size matters. That’s why a 12,000-pound monster truck is way better than your average pickup … at least when it comes to competing in Monster Jam. Hearts won’t be the only things racing on Saturday as this competition tests the monstrous machines (and their drivers) with plenty of jumping, smashing and full-throttle racing. From the iconic Grave Digger to the menacing Megalodon, drivers show o their skills with gravity-defying stunts and neck-breaking speed. The only thing scarier is driving on I-4 during rush hour. The

lineup this year also includes El Toro Loco, Max D, Lucas Stabilizer, Great Clips Mohawk Warrior, Kraken, Bad Company, Black Pearl, JCB DIGatron, Jester and Shaker. There will also be opportunities for fans to meet their favorite drivers and see the monster trucks up close. For younger fans, there are pre-show activities with a play area, slides and a remote control truck course. 7 p.m., Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bowl Place, campingworldstadium.com, $25-$100. — AS

Vision Video

Spinning out of the viral “Goth Dad” TikTok and Reel series — humorous and the references fully on-point, but we still feel relentlessly attacked — Vision Video have gone on to prove themselves much more than a meme. Led by frontperson Dusty Gannan, an Afghanistan war veteran turned firefighter and EMT, the band know their way around a chiming ri and a soaring chorus in the way Chameleons and Fields of the Nephilim did — and their remarkably fervent fanbase (a younger crowd, while the old heads sulk at old-wave nights) are eating it up. They bring it live, with a modern spin on the classic deathrock aesthetic, and though they go all-in on the poses and moods, there’s a knowing wink and the merest hint of a grin that keeps the whole deal oddly … life-a rming. This will, in all likelihood, sell out (if it hasn’t already). So if you want to hear the new grave, be quick or be sad(der). 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $20. — MM

MONDAY, MARCH 4

The Eagles

Another cadre of classic rock legends are on the way to Orlando in what is an increasingly busy year for musical nostalgia. The Eagles bring their (alleged) final “The Long Goodbye” tour to town Monday. The oft-fractious ensemble — whose membership currently includes Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey — have embarked on a lengthy farewell tour that stretches into 2025, and they just keep adding more shows to the itinerary. Warnings of a farewell tour are not just marketing hyperbole — despite the easygoing music of the band (ahem, “Take It Easy”),

relationships between the major players are famously combustible. By all accounts, though, things are harmonious onstage and o this tour. And you will hear the hits with all the attendant vocal harmonies intact, satisfyingly. Opening is Donald Fagen’s Steely Dan, making for a powerhouse bill and an angular, sarcastic East Coast counterpoint to the headliners’ more mellow West Coast vibes. 6:30 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Olivia Rodrigo

Pop princess Olivia Rodrigo will make her bed at Kia Center this week, as she shares songs from her sophomore album, GUTS, with arenas and cities she’s never played before — including Orlando. Despite being only 21, Rodrigo has three Grammy Awards to her name, including Best New Artist. Rodrigo is best known for hit singles “drivers license,” “deja vu” and more recently, radio hit “vampire.” The singer-songwriter has also dipped her toes into the acting pool, getting her early start on Bizaardvark at 12, leading to starring roles in An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success and Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. (Though this will not be a Disneyfied show.) Accompanying Rodrigo is singersongwriter and queer icon Chappell Roan. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, Chappell Roan released her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess — a collection of songs heavy on drama, glitter and powerhouse vocals — last year. Her “thrift-store pop” anthem “Red Wine Supernova” put her on the map, where she’s been compared to an art-pop Lady Gaga. Quite a night. 6:30 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter. com, SOLD OUT. — Grayson Keglovic
