HOW TO... re-energise your home Follow our schedule for the whole of January, and by the end of the month you’ll have a clean and organised home for the year ahead one Time to get organised. Transfer important dates into your 2019 ✓ Week calendar and diary. Get on top of unopened post and paperwork, sorting out a new filing system if you don’t have one. Reshuffle your wardrobe, clearing out anything you no longer need. Neaten kitchen drawers, organising takeaway menus, leaflets, and vouchers. Declutter cupboards, binning out-of-date food, before cleaning them. Then do the same with the fridge-freezer, before defrosting it. Week two Time for a proper clean. After Christmas your oven and microwave will be in need of a refresh, and now’s a good chance to disinfect the bins as well. Tackle hidden dust by organising and vacuuming under the beds, and behind furniture. Dust unseen surfaces, such as the tops of wardrobes, behind books and along photo frames. Finally, give the skirting boards a wash. Week three Time to tackle the details. Throughout the house dust light fittings and radiators. Give the sofa a clean, removing cushions and covers if you can. In the bathroom, get to work on limescale and discoloured grout, and in the kitchen use a cleaning treatment on the washing machine and dishwasher. WEEK FOUR Time to freshen up. Clean blinds and curtains, taking them down if needed. Before putting them back up, give the windows and sills a good wipe. Deep vacuum carpets and rugs, and sweep and wash hard floors. Finally, if you still have energy, you could turn your focus to the loft!

Q&A What can I do to make tackling the ironing pile less of a chore? There are a number of things you can do to speed up ironing, the first being to invest in a steam generator iron which will zip through the laundry pile. However, if you’re looking for a cheaper fix, then start by smoothing out clothing when hanging it to dry, then iron while it is still slightly damp or use a water spray as you go. Salter soup maker, £99.99 On a busy evening, we quickly prepared the ingredients as per the recipe booklet, pressed a button and forgot about it until it beeped, signalling it was ready. Minor drawbacks were the lack of sauté and keep-hot functions and there was only the option to make three to four servings, but the ultra-quiet, effective blending (chunky or smooth) and self-cleaning setting made up for these. It has replaced our trusty smoothie maker, too.

We tried out a selection of gadgets, here’s what we found… Tefal My daily soup maker, £74.99 We really appreciated how quick and easy this gadget was to use – we simply popped in the ingredients, selected our function from the four options, which included chunky, creamy, smoothies and a handy cleaning cycle, too. Half an hour later, it beeped to signal that dinner was ready. This machine didn’t offer a sauté function, but otherwise we were happy with the value and the flavour of soup produced.

Cuisinart soup maker plus, £140 We made soup in just 30 minutes with this sturdy machine. After sautéing, we threw in the rest of the ingredients and set the timer, then pressed blend once it was cooked, before serving piping-hot soup into bowls at the table. It was easy to clean and came with a recipe booklet and an easy-read instruction manual. Ideal if you like speedy, no-fuss cooking.

‘I’ve created a hallway that’s unique!’ A striking colour scheme and plenty of style-savvy ideas have transformed Leesa Coston’s once-drab hallway into an inviting space that’s brimming with personality STEP ONE The Coston’s first aking on a renovation project is no

easy task, but Leesa Coston, 46, who lives with her husband, Max, and three children, James, Sam and Lily, in a 1920s semi in South London, always knew it would be worth the effort. ‘The house hadn’t been touched for years and was full of original features but for me, the neglected hall with its beautiful stained glass and timber panelling was the star of the show,’ she says. However, with major works required elsewhere in the house, Leesa’s challenge was creating her vision of a characterful, yet modern, reception hall on limited funds.
task was to strip the dated wallpaper and lightly sand the timber panelling ready for painting. ‘We always knew one or two panels would have to be replaced due to historical damp,’ recalls Leesa, ‘So having called in the professionals, we also took the opportunity to board and plaster over the ugly Artex ceiling.’ However, what the couple hadn’t bargained for was most of the original plaster falling off the main exterior wall. With additional costly replastering out the question, they took the brave decision to make a feature of the unexpectedly exposed brickwork. ‘It proved surprisingly easy as, having removed any remaining plaster, we simply wire brushed the bricks before washing and sealing with diluted PVA,’ she explains, ‘And I am pleased to say everyone thinks it looks fantastic!’

This quirky display cabinet was spotted in a local vintage store and provides the perfect place for some secondary statement lighting Leesa laid geometric tiles outside her front door, before adding a coir doormat to prevent dirt being tracked through the house
Luckily, the remaining plaster proved more stable, although Leesa did invest in a couple of rolls of embossed wallpaper. ‘It’s ideal for covering up poor plasterwork – which was very much in evidence around the front door,’ she says, ‘and the 1920s pattern is a perfect match for my home.’ Leesa then chose space-enhancing crisp white for both walls and panelling, before taking the bold step of painting the entire ceiling dark grey. ‘Max thought I was mad but, having seen something similar on Pinterest, I was convinced that the effect would complement the exposed brickwork and also add warmth and character to the scheme,’ she smiles. www.yourhomemagazine.co.uk

STEP three Sadly, removing the carpet didn’t prove quite so successful, as, rather than revealing pristine original flooring, the couple were greeted by an array of badly chopped and mismatched boards – a situation only made worse by the installation of Leesa’s prized periodstyle radiator. ‘In the end, we decided to bite the bullet and invest in new timber flooring as we knew that it would stand the test of time,’ explains Leesa. This, however, left very little in the kitty for the stairs, so the couple ditched plans for a runner, in favour of showcasing the original treads and paintwork. ‘I love how it echoes our initial idea of a runner,’ she says.
To complete the scheme, Leesa turned to the original features in her home for inspiration. ‘My pink door was inspired by the lovely stained glass, while the geometric rug and hardy exterior tiles are intended to reference the 1920s era,’ she explains. An inexpensive Ikea bench provides useful seating, while Leesa’s ebonised cabinet, spotted in a local vintage store for £125, offers plenty of storage, plus a place to display a funky neon sign and contemporary typography. However, Leesa’s favourite addition has to be her fabulous antlers. ‘I bought them on eBay and they’re a real talking point with guests, as is my grey ceiling – and I’m happy to report that all comments have been extremely positive!’ YH

‘I wanted an inviting entrance hall to greet my guests’
Annelie Drabu created a warm welcome to her home with a vibrant colour scheme to reflect her style
A
nnelie Drabu, 37, loves the Edwardian house that she lives in with her husband Hamza, and their two children, Sabina, 9, and Eden, 5, in Woodford Green, Essex – but her hallway was very uninspiring. Not only was it in dire need of some colour, but the old floorboards were letting in a lot of draughts and the whole space felt cold and unwelcoming. ‘It always felt so chilly,’ she explains, ‘And as soon as the temperature dropped during winter, I could never seem to warm up the hallway, which then impacted on the whole house.’ Annelie also felt the bland space didn’t reflect her style and was keen to transform it to make it more inviting with a deep colour scheme and new flooring to keep in the heat.

STEP ONE
The old floorboards took priority as the large gaps in between them made the house cold. Annelie wanted solid oak flooring for a natural look and chose the same design to continue throughout the whole of the A narrow console table made from scaffold boards creates a handy space for more of Annelie’s accessories. Potted green plants add a burst of colour and makes the space feel very welcoming.

Being a fan of the colour blue, Annelie opted for a deep shade to add drama. ‘The previous colour was pale and insipid,’ she recalls. ‘I wanted to make an impact this time around.’ With a Little Greene shade in mind, Annelie went all out and painted the woodwork and doors in the same hue, too. ‘It has immediately warmed up the space!’ she smiles. Annelie picked a bright citrus yellow for the balustrade to create an exciting contrast.

STEP three ‘We’re always losing our keys, so it was important to add some shelving and storage ideas,’ explains Annelie, who next went on to find a
company to make up slimline console tables to fit the narrow hallway. ‘It’s quite a tight space with a lot of doorways, so it was quite tricky finding a table to fit.’ The hairpin legs add an industrial feel and prevent the table from looking too bulky. Stripy storage baskets were added to organise shoes and bags, and a large statement sunburst mirror with metallic details was placed by the front door, teamed with a geometric ceiling light. ‘I wanted to personalise the space with lots of wall decoration,’ adds Annelie, ‘so I added framed prints, hanging plants and accessories to make it feel really homely.’ Annelie even got busy with pompoms and made the colourful wall hanging for the landing. ‘I’m so delighted our hallway has finally had a major facelift,’ she smiles. ‘It’s made such a huge difference and makes the whole house feel so warm and homely now.’ YH

STEP two The next step was to choose a carpet for the stairs and landing upstairs. ‘I looked everywhere for a flat-weave runner that was bright and colourful,’ she says, ‘And fortunately, I eventually came across a company called Off The Loom that had exactly what I was looking for.’ A carpet consultant then came over with samples and measured up. ‘He explained the runner would be mitred on the landing, which I thought would make a lovely touch,’ she says. ‘As soon as the runner went down, it completely transformed the space.’ Annelie then chose a soft-grey carpet for the landing and stairs to the loft to tie in with the bedrooms.

The Story Of 30 Cubed Martin Gardner, a world-famous mathematician and scientist once wrote an article in ‘Scientific American’ magazine, expressing his regret that the ‘30 colour cube’ principle had never been turned into a commercial set of challenges. ‘I wanted to make a good first impression’ Inge-Lise gave her dark, oppressive hallway a brand new look with a Scandinavian twist
W
hen classical singer Inge-Lise Nygaard, 48, and her daughter Emilia moved into their new house in South Woodford, East London, the hallway was not the first priority. ‘Every room in the house was in dire need of some DIY love and the hallway had been ignored for years,’ explains Inge-Lise. The lacklustre entrance was drained of light by a dated and grubby dark-blue stair carpet, and the space lacked personality. ‘I went on a trip home to Norway, where my family are from, and was really inspired by

the light and relaxed spaces,’ she explains. Returning with plenty of ideas on how she wanted to decorate her hallway, Inge-Lise couldn’t wait to get started. ‘Having a welcoming hallway is so uplifting, especially when you come home after a busy day at work, so that was my mission,’ she smiles.
STEP ONE
The first job on IngeLise’s to-do list was replacing the flooring. ‘The dark wooden laminate on the ground floor had seen better days,’ she explains. ‘I found it so depressing walking through the front door, not just because it drained the hallway of light, but because it was really damaged.’ A new pale wooden flooring was installed instead which brightened up the space immediately. ‘I’m relieved that it’s so much brighter now,’ exclaims Inge-Lise. The next job was to find a replacement for the dark-blue stair carpet. ‘I wanted the overall scheme to be fairly neutral with a light and airy feel,’ she says, ‘But it was important to add character to the stairs.’ Inge-Lise wanted a hardwearing sisal carpet and some lovely striped stair runners from Kersaint Cobb really caught her eye. ‘Having a pale colour scheme can sometimes feel

space. To create a handy space for shoes, Inge-Lisa chose to add the Hemnes shoe storage cabinet from Ikea, which tidies away the items that easily clutter up the area by the front door. A large clock makes it easy for the family to keep on top of time. Inge-Lise also found a narrow half-moon console table which sits perfectly over the radiator by the front door, providing a perfect spot for a Noble Isle room diffuser which fills the whole area with wonderful aromas. Inge-Lise positioned a large mirror above to bounce light around
the space and make it feel brighter. Picture ledges were fitted by the stairs and painted with the same grey paint to display framed prints for added interest.
STEP three
Inge-Lise is lucky enough to have a large landing upstairs, and decided to turn the area into an office. She found a table on eBay and refreshed it with a coat of leftover paint. ‘I love simple linens,’ explains Inge-Lise, ‘I bought some gorgeous fabric online, and my neighbour made it into a blind for me.’ With a few new accessories plus a display of fresh flowers, Inge-Lise is now proud to welcome her guests into her home. ‘The lighter scheme has made such a difference,’ she smiles. ‘The space is completely transformed, and finally flooded with light.’ YH

What did you learn during the project? ‘I learnt to be more patient: you have to be, especially with an older property. Things always take longer than you think, they don’t happen overnight.’

A
beautiful Edwardian villa in Edinburgh is the third and final home for Kim and Billy O’Donnell-Archibald. ‘We’ve done a major renovation on our previous two properties and feel that this house will be the last,’ Kim says. ‘It needed a lot of work done when we first bought it and we’re undertaking the project bit by bit,’ she explains. The kitchen was the first room they tackled as they had hoped it would be a simple transformation. ‘If money had been no object we would have replaced the whole kitchen, but we had a budget to stick to, so decided to make do,’ Kim explains. Kim was happy with the classic free-standing Ikea cabinetry but found the beech doors bland and characterless. ‘To update the space I painted the cabinetry in Farrow & Ball’s Hardwicke White, a traditional grey, and the walls in neutral String,’ she explains, ‘And it transformed the room, making
it much brighter.’ The wall tiles, installed by the previous owners, toned well with Kim’s palette. The island was wildly over-sized making the space feel very cramped and awkward. To open up the room, Kim and Billy split the unit in half, which immediately made the room feel a lot more spacious. Although Kim wanted to replace the nondescript laminate flooring, they decided to postpone that job until they had completed work on the adjoining dining area. The dining room extension was a major upheaval. Formerly a lean-to conservatory with a corrugated plastic roof, the whole house was freezing when they first moved in thanks to its draughty construction. Kim and Billy decided to take on the demolition and rebuild themselves, installing double glazing and a solid lantern roof. ‘We waited until summer before starting the work, knowing we would need good weather. For protection there was

only a tarpaulin over the roof and over one weekend in July we had a heavy downpour and the whole kitchen-dining space became flooded,’ Kim laments. With the kitchen floor waterlogged, the couple had to replace it sooner than expected and chose a timeless limed oak to run throughout the space. Next, to make a focal point of the re-sized island breakfast bar, they created a striking tiled zone: ‘That was Billy’s idea,’ admits Kim, ‘And it’s really effective.’ With the kitchen decorated in a palette of taupes and greys, Kim has accessorised with mementos and collectibles. She loves art prints, candles and plants. ‘I’m a bit of a magpie if I’m honest,’ she laughs. The results are beautiful; the kitchen is a spacious homely room that is perfect for get-togethers with family and friends.

Cut a 40cm x 22cm piece of white leather, and lay it flat with right side facing upwards. 1Using pink chalk paint, gently spray along the
length of the leather, covering only half of it to create an ombré effect. Leave to dry. While the paint dries, fold your papers. Crease each A4 sheet of watercolour paper in half and place them in signatures of five sheets. Make four in total. Find and mark the middle of the crease along each signature and pierce with an awl, then repeat to make two more holes on each crease, 2cm in from each edge. Pierce the paper and Lay your leather flat with right side facing down. Fold the left leather with an awl as hand side over by 15cm – this is it’s much easier than the front cover of the book. Insert the signatures inside this using a needle. cover and wrap the rest of the leather around from the back, to create the right-hand flap. Snip along this right-hand edge using pinking shears. Open out the flaps again, and mark the point on the inside of the leather at which the pierced holes of each of the signatures sit. Pierce with an awl, then use a leather needle to thread each of the signatures into place on the leather, working from the centre of each one outwards and back again until secure. Finish each signature by tying the thread tightly. Finish by tying a ribbon around the leather-wrapped notebook to hold the front cover and flap in place.

Make your mould. From corrugated card (or thick cardboard), cut a 35cm x 17.5cm rectangle. Score and fold it every 7cm then bend round to form a pentagon. Snip 2.5cm up from the bottom of each score line and bend outwards to form flaps. Use Gorilla tape to seal the shape. Cut a square of card and tape the pentagon to it. Wrap the entire outside of the shape in tape to seal it, including the area around the bottom of the mould to ensure the plaster doesn’t leak out. In a large bowl, mix four cups of plaster of Paris with two cups of water. Gently stir until combined, being careful not to create air bubbles. Once incorporated, pour the plaster into the pentagon mould. Cover an empty drinks can in Vaseline then fill it ¾ to the top with water. Push the can into the middle of the mould, ensuring the plaster doesn’t overflow. Tap the mould a few times to allow any bubbles to rise to the surface then leave to set. Create the shadow box. Remove the glass from your box frame and dispose of it safely. Take out the back board and use it as a template to cut a square from patterned paper then stick the paper to the board using a glue stick. Place the board back in the frame and secure. Colour three screw-in hooks using pink paint. While they dry, measure and mark the three points at which you want to hang your tags – try to keep them central and equally spaced within the frame. Once dry, screw each of the hooks into position then hang the tags from them to display the date.

Begin by cutting the planks to make your chevron table top. Use a set square to measure and mark each piece, dividing it into 30cm lengths with a 45º cut at each end. Use a mitre saw to quickly and accurately cut the wood – if you don’t have an electric saw, you could use a mitre box and hand saw to cut the wood instead.

Lightly sand each of your planks, then wipe all over with a damp cloth. Gather your three paint colours together (choosing one dark, one medium and one light shade), then take two of your planks and lay them flat, facing each other, as pictured. Paint them with the darkest colour. Repeat to paint another pair with the medium colour, and another with the lightest colour.

Create a 50/50 mix of your dark and medium colours, and use it to paint the next pair, once again laying them out facing each other. Paint the final pair of planks with a 50/50 mixture of your medium and light colours, then leave all the planks to dry thoroughly before putting them in colour order from darkest to lightest.

Treat each plank to protect the paint. You can either varnish them all over, or, as we did, rub a clear furniture wax into each one with a clean cloth to keep the paint safe from scratches and bring out the colours.

Build your rectangular base support. From 44mm wide timber, cut two 41cm lengths and three 38cm lengths. Build a frame using of two of each size, joining them together with wood screws. Finally place the third 38cm piece down the middle of the rectangle and screw firmly into position.

Use a strong wood glue to fix your tabletop planks together in colour order, making sure they are laid on a flat surface while they dry. Wipe away any excess. Once set, turn over the tabletop and screw the base support to the underside, making sure to screw into each plank around the edge of the frame and down the central support to strengthen the structure further.

As an optional step, you can paint the underside and base support of your table. We chose to use the medium shade to paint the edges of ours but you could use any colour, or even repeat the ombré effect on the underside of the table. If you do decide to paint it, treat the paint with wax or varnish as for the top to protect against any knocks and scratches.

With the tabletop laid flat and the underside facing upwards, add your legs. Place each of the hairpin legs on one corner of the base support and screw into position.

ith winter winds howling outside, it’s easy for cold gusts to creep into our homes. Keep your rooms cosy with this cute woodland-style felt fox draught excluder.

Begin by cutting two 20cm x 60cm pieces of red felt and four 20cm square pieces of white felt. Lay the red felt pieces out flat and place two white pieces on top of each red one, aligning along the 20cm edges. Pin, then work a straight machine stitch along the edge to join them, leaving a 1cm seam allowance.

Lay your joined felt pieces down and open out the seam allowances. Place your body template onto it as indicated and draw around the shape using a pencil, then cut out. Repeat to cut a second piece from the second piece of joined felt, to give two body pieces.

Place the two body pieces together with right sides facing. Pin, then work a straight machine stitch around the edge, leaving a 1cm seam allowance and a small gap in the seam along the belly. Snip into the seam on the curves – this will allow it to be turned out easier.

want something that will both fill it out equally, and be heavy enough to hold him down. We used a mixture of toy stuffing and uncooked rice to fill ours. Close the gap in the seam with hand-stitches.

Thread an embroidery needle with a 50cm length of red embroidery thread. Measure 20cm from the end of the fox’s tail, then work a long straight stitch all around the tail, making sure not to tie off the thread at either end. Once you’ve stitched all the way around, pull the thread to gather the tail up. Wrap the thread around the gather and then tie in a neat bow to secure.

Use the template to cut two head pieces from red felt and one face piece from white felt. Pin the face onto one of the head pieces and work a straight machine stitch all around, 3mm in from the edge, to secure. Use an embroidery needle and black thread to stitch eyes and a nose onto the face.

Place the two head pieces together with right sides facing out and pin. Stitch around, 3mm in from the edge, leaving a small gap in the seam. Stuff with toy filling through this gap, then finish up the seam. Hand-stitch the head to the top of the body to finish.

Plan n How many tiles do you need? Measure the
height and width of the area you’re tiling, then multiply them together. For example, a wall that is 2.4m tall by 3.8m wide is 9.12 sq m. Most packs of tiles will say how many square metres they contain. It’s a good idea to buy 10 per cent extra to cover any cracked tiles and mishaps, so we’d get at least 10 sq m. You can return unused boxes, but if you don’t buy enough to begin with you could end up not getting an exact match for the lot you have.
Prep n Sand the wall, wipe with a damp cloth, then
leave to dry fully. Apply a thin coat of primer – it will help the adhesive set just as it should. If you’re tiling on bare plaster or timber, or in a bathroom, it’s unwise to skip this step.
n Use a spirit level to draw horizontal and
vertical guidelines, as walls and floors aren’t always straight. You can screw a timber batten across these (1) to make placing tiles easier – check behind the wall with a stud detector first so you don’t burst a pipe. Leave the timber batten in place until the adhesive is dry.
n Choose your layout: from a classic brick

between the last full tile and the wall (4), then subtract the spacer size. Mark the remainder onto a tile with a pencil, then score along the line with a tile cutter. good while to set, polish the surface with a soft cloth to get rid of leftover product and make your new tiles shine.

wear, run a grout pen along the joins for a quick and easy refresh.

There’s a huge choice of different bed types and mattress fillings which can help regulate temperature and keep you warm. Memory foam is a good insulator compared to springs and manufacturers are developing various solutions for climate control including gel-foam technology whereby the foam incorporates tiny beads that change from a solid to a liquid state to deliver a cooling effect. In addition, the use of smart fabrics on the mattress surface will help regulate body temperature. Wool, silk, cashmere, mohair and other natural fibres inside a mattress also have insulation properties – keeping you warm and cosy without the risk of overheating. However, a simple solution for rooms with high humidity and a risk of water splashes is to have pictures printed on aluminium or acrylic glass. Both materials are resistant to moisture and can be wiped clean easily without damage to the print. A big advantage, especially for those lucky enough to have a bathroom with a window, is that these prints are also immune to the effects of UV rays, meaning they won’t fade over time. Using her neutral apartment as a blank canvas, Victoria Hopkins has explored her passion for colour and pattern to create a vibrant and homely space

ictoria and Peter had been renting in Edinburgh and house hunting for a while but had become frustrated with the price and condition of older properties in the area. ‘We weren’t planning to buy a new build but when we went to see a show flat in a centrally located development by Miller Homes, we were really impressed and realised that the apartment ticked almost all our

It was high on my wish list and I found a refurbished model on eBay. MY ADVICE Is don’t feel you have to go neutral in a new build; the lack of period features is even more reason to make bold colour and pattern choices. FOR INSPIRATION I keep an eye on London Fashion Week, it’s a great way to pick up on the latest colours and trends. THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING HERE Is it’s so central yet really peaceful as well; plus, we have plenty of parking space which is a real bonus in Edinburgh.
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE Was getting married, doing up our flat and setting up my business – all in one year!

in marketing for a variety of design companies for a number of years and was really keen to set up my own interior design practice,’ Victoria explains. ‘This flat offered an extra bedroom as a studio and I realised that it could be a great showcase for my work,’ she continues. The couple laid neutral engineered oak flooring throughout. Victoria felt this was a good base and knew that she could add interest with rugs. Elsewhere she went

ahead and used all the bold, contrasting colours she loves and chose daring patterns and accessories that she hoped would inspire potential clients. ‘I wanted to push my ideas as far as I could,’ Victoria explains, and, as a result her home is fabulously atmospheric, eclectic and vibrant. She had a few naysayers among friends and family about her choice of dark tones for the walls, particularly in the large living room. But she has no regrets and, since

A new-build home decorated entirely in neutrals might feel a bit cold and sterile.’ seeing the results, the doubters all love the scheme. ‘I wanted our home to make a bit of a statement; it was an opportunity to experiment and create a portfolio for my design business. So playing safe was not an option,’ Victoria asserts. She has made edgy choices for artworks and selected unexpected, glamorous, finishes inspired by her love of fashion. ‘Neons, florals and graphic patterns are all allowed in my home, and pattern on pattern is a great way to enliven your décor I believe,’ says Victoria. Her furniture choices are a mix of simple contemporary designs and fabulous vintage finds, many that she has upcycled. She never over spends, and has an eye for a bargain, but always looks for quality first. Clearly a rule breaker, Victoria’s design

I think a new-build home decorated entirely in neutrals might feel a bit cold and sterile,’ Victoria reflects. The couple are very happy with their home but are yet to address the hallway. Victoria advises that you should do the hallway last. ‘We did ours first which was a mistake, it’s far too pale and uninteresting; we would like it to be brighter and more dramatic now we have both fully committed to the idea of colour!’ They love the layout of their apartment; it has a really nice flow. ‘There are great views from up here on our floor,’ Victoria says. ‘And the development is so peaceful.

Our heritage has influenced our style Inspired by their South African roots, Cindy and Craig Gibson wanted to create a family home that combined classic colonial style with an open-plan layout

riginally from Durban, South Africa, Cindy and Craig Gibson moved to the UK two years ago after an opportunity arose to transfer with Craig’s work. With a handful of relatives already living in Hertfordshire, it made sense for the couple and their two young children to forge a new life in the same area, so they jumped at the chance of a new adventure. ‘We knew we loved the town of Berkhamsted from the many trips to visit family, but we weren’t sure what part of

town suited us, so we rented a small house off the high street while we searched for somewhere to buy,’ recalls Cindy. After many hours on Rightmove and driving round the streets to get a feel for the areas, the couple discovered a house on the edge of town overlooking farm land, and immediately spotted potential. ‘We knew we could renovate it to work for our family and create an aesthetic that was very us,’ says Cindy. ‘We’d made mistakes with house renovations in the past and aim to do things better every time. This

I GET INSPIRATION From interiors magazines, Pinterest and visiting other people’s houses but also my African heritage. Craig also has great taste and is always bringing back ideas from his business trips to stunning restaurants and hotels. He’s always on trend! MY BEST BUY Is a dark-framed portrait

I LEARNT That good tradesmen are hard to find. I soon discovered how to persuade them to take the job – by telling them we had ample parking for their vans!

need to have space indoors and out for keeping cool and entertaining, so massive patios and large open spaces are what we love in a home.’ Outside, the facade of the house also underwent a huge facelift with the steel windows swapped for classic wooden sash designs, while dark brick and brown tiles were replaced with modern wood cladding. ‘We love classic colonial-style homes and wanted to bring a touch of that here with an open porch at the front too. We did have to get planning permission for the porch but it has really transformed the exterior and given the house a unique feel,’ says Cindy. The couple’s heritage has been a huge influence on their interior choices too, even if they weren’t always intentional. ‘We didn’t seek to create an ethnic feel, it just happened organically,’ says Cindy, who has peppered the living spaces with a mix of natural textures, treasures from their travels, family heirlooms and bold soft furnishings. The result is a distinctive, global-inspired vibe that’s warm, relaxed and utterly inviting. ‘I love combining

We often change things up with a new display, and this basket is great place to keep the frames to hand’

bathroom and a study. ‘As Jack is still young, we didn’t feel he needed a huge room so we halved it and created a home office, with the intention of changing it back into one big bedroom when he’s older,’ says Cindy. The colour palette in the bedrooms echoes the elegant schemes downstairs, with the main bedroom featuring a dramatic statement wall and elegant parquet flooring. ‘This space went from a dated room to a luxurious haven where we relax, unwind and prepare for the day ahead in a chic environment,’ says Cindy. ‘It’s definitely the space we’re most pleased with.’ With a successful renovation behind them, and the only disaster being that they blew their budget, the family now spends more time together at home making the most of the versatile spaces, such as the

Living in the house that Dad built Harriet Cockcroft knew exactly what she wanted from her modern cottage – and just the right person who could make it happen

REAL HOME ‘With windows at both ends your eye is drawn right through the cottage and out to the countryside beyond.’ The main bedroom, which includes a large en suite bathroom linked by a dressing area, is on the first floor, leaving the guest rooms and shower room on the top floor. ‘We turned the smallest bedroom up there into a flexible space with a desk and fold-out bed. When Mark and I don’t have visitors we close off the top floor,’ says Harriet. ‘Mark’s children Jack, six, and Sophie, three, come to stay with us at weekends and love sleeping there. For them it’s a big adventure.’ A thick carpet separates the sitting area from the tiled kitchen and an electric fire from the Stone Centre in Brighouse creates a cosy focal point in winter months

hen Harriet began looking for a modern-style starter home closer to her work in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, she knew exactly who to turn to for help. Her father Paul Cockcroft, chairman of a development company, had just finished building 10 contemporary cottages next to a renovated Georgian mansion – and one of them ticked all the boxes for Harriet. ‘I had been looking for a while and the answer was staring me in the face,’ she says. ‘I remember Dad’s company turning the mansion into apartments when I was growing up so I was already familiar with the area. My partner Mark and I looked round this cottage and sealed the deal for the asking price. Dad insists on highquality workmanship and finishes, and let me choose the fittings and fixtures. It was win-win all round.’ The three-storey house, which has a garden overlooking a valley, features a spacious open-plan living and kitchen zone, plus arched windows made of tapered blocks from a local quarry. ‘I like the fact this house feels light and open from the moment you walk into the main room,’ says Harriet.

Harriet wanted the built-in features of the modern cottage to stand out, particularly the arched windows, which her dad had carefully designed to be in sympathy with the listed mansion house. ‘The property not only has lots of character but also plenty of storage, which is rare in a modern new-build,’ says Harriet. Her dad was already working with Leeds-based designer Christine Yorath by the time Harriet bought the house, so Christine was able to advise Harriet on the fittings and fixtures, particularly the floor and wall tiles, carpet and large L-shaped sofa which separates the sitting area from the kitchen and dining area. They chose the same McPhersons white emulsion throughout to link the rooms and reflect light around the house. ‘It’s a soft shade of white which adds a bit of warmth to the scheme,’ says Harriet. ‘Christine calls the colour palette “greige” – a modern mix of white, blush pink, taupe and mushroom – which I built up with layers of bright colour that can be swapped and
changed around throughout the seasons.’ Harriet wanted to create a stylish, uncluttered scheme with warm-toned layers and cosy accessories. ‘I opted for carpet for a homely feel, but everything had to be practical. Mark and I work long hours so we didn’t want it to be high maintenance.’ Harriet achieved this by keeping furniture to a minimum, but choosing extra-large key pieces, such as beds and sofas. ‘Less is more and large furniture looks really striking in a simple setting, especially when layered with lots of throws and cushions,’ she says. ‘The challenge was getting the beds and sofas The over-sized headboard was designed by Christine Yorath who also supplied the curtains, made with fabric from Prestigious Textiles. ‘We made sure the curtains were positioned away from the beautiful windows.’ Many of the lamps in the house are from Homesense and the throw is by Riva Paoletti Harriet wanted to bring warmth and texture into the modern guest bedroom, so she chose thick-pile Eternal Saxony carpet from United Carpets to absorb sound and add a sense of luxury. Harriet, who likes symmetry and balance, took her time to build up the look and was prepared to wait until she found what she wanted. ‘Christine suggested that I should team lamps in pairs,’ she says. ‘It was good advice which has worked well in the bedroom and sitting room where I have matching designs either side of the sofa arms.’ Buying a house from her father could have been a strain, yet it was anything but. ‘I love Dad’s attention to detail and how he thought of everything – from the subtle theme of oak finishes for the doors and stairs to the style of the windows, plus the built-in cupboards and practical layout,’ says Harriet. ‘It’s hard to make decisions when you’re starting with nothing but working with my dad and Christine made it easier. I love the fact that I’m living in a house my dad built.’ YH

I’m living and working in my dream home When upsizing to their new house, Kerrie and Russell fulfilled their life-long dream of retreating to the countryside with a spacious garden full of chickens

hen Kerrie and Russell Measor were searching for a new home, at the top of their wish list was a rural setting where chickens could roam freely. ‘I’d always dreamed of living in the countryside,’ says Kerrie. ‘We were looking for a home that had space for us to grow. Somewhere we could put down roots.’ Before this house, the couple were living in the nearby town of Colchester in a twobed property. ‘It was a small, centrally

located Victorian mid-terrace house. It was lovely but we were quickly out-growing it within just a few years of living there,’ she explains. ‘I’m a wedding photographer and work from home; our spare bedroom had turned into my office which meant we struggled to host friends to stay. And the garden was far too small for our dog.’ In March 2015, the young couple started hunting for a property that would have office space for Kerrie to host her clients.

In total, they looked at eight properties before finding this four-bedroom home situated in the Essex countryside. ‘It was above our budget but with the large garden and the idyllic location we knew this was the house for us,’ she says. ‘We negotiated the price with the owners and stretched ourselves as much as we could to be able to afford to buy it.’ The previous owners had painted the property in neutral colours and put down plain carpets throughout for a quick sale. ‘The décor was easy to move into and felt fresh and bright,’ Kerrie explains. ‘It was always our idea to add colour and The kitchen was given a small DIY refresh by the couple. The units were given four coats of paint and they bought an oak worktop from a local timber merchants. Kerrie made the blind using material from Terry’s Fabrics. They bought spice racks from Ikea and painted them to match the cabinets, then hung a clock from Dunelm on the wall to finish off the look

‘I’m most proud of my peach-stamped wall. Friends always think it’s wallpaper until they look a little closer.’ Kerrie painted her dining chairs in different chalk paints to brighten up the space. She put down a patterned rug from Homesense and hung picture frames from Sainsbury’s on the wall. ‘The table is a hand-me-down from our family,’ Kerrie says. The cactus cloth mural is an eBay find which Kerrie has washi-taped to the wall to add pattern and colour to her dining room
personality when we moved in but we were too frightened to pick up a paintbrush in case we made a costly mistake.’ The couple lived in the house for six months before tackling any of the rooms. ‘We didn’t touch anything and lived with the existing décor until we made up our minds about what to do,’ Kerrie says. ‘Then we set the ball rolling by painting the living room, putting up art and buying a few key accessories to finish off the look.’ Rather than going on holiday last year the couple decided to have a ‘staycation’ at home and spend their time off renovating their dark and dingy kitchen. They updated the brown wooden units with a soft duck-egg blue paint and the black faux-marble worktop was replaced with a beautiful solid oak one. ‘We went to a local DIY store to ask advice on how to paint the units and when we were in there we spotted a kitchen on display which had blue base cabinets and cream wall units,’ she says. ‘As the colours worked so well

together, we decided to copy the idea.’ They painstakingly hand-painted all their kitchen cabinet doors and the matching woodwork. Then Russell’s dad fitted the oak worktop for them. ‘We had picked the rainiest week to do this DIY job. The weather was so cold and damp that each coat of paint took ages to dry,’ Kerrie says. ‘We spent a whole week painting and varnishing but the finished result was completely worth it.’ Kerrie made a blind for the window in a quirky chicken print together with a matching curtain to hide her recycling bins. To finish off the room, they treated themselves to a refurbished Smeg fridge found on eBay. With every room painted white or cream they had the perfect blank canvas to add more colour to the house. Kerrie spotted the peach-print paint effect on a blog which she then tried out herself in the kitchen. She put up bird wall stickers in the breakfast room to brighten up the space. And upstairs they painted

The living room features two vintage rowing oars found in a junk shop when on holiday to Fowey. ‘We thought they worked well in here as our home is located near an estuary which has a sailing heritage,’ she says. The leather sofa from Debenhams, when teamed with the Ikea rug, makes this space feel warm and inviting The fireplace was installed by the previous owners. ‘We have considered converting it to use as an open fireplace but this room warms up so quickly we don’t really need it. So for now we just have it as a decoration which we have filled with a candle holder from Homebase and the bird houses bought from Argos.’ Above hangs a donkey head from Abigail Ahern at Debenhams

After spending the bulk of their savings on this house, Kerrie and Russell had little left over to buy furniture. ‘We moved in with next to nothing, so bought inexpensive vintage furniture from charity shops. Our families offered to help with DIY,’ says Kerrie. ‘Russell’s dad made the bench in the breakfast room and put up shelves as he is very handy. And my mum taught me how to sew as I wanted to make cushions and curtains for our home.’ After two years of hard work, the couple have transformed what was a plain, uninspiring house into a home full of personality, colour and quirky ideas. But it is the countryside setting that Kerrie and Russell love so much. ‘When I married Russell, we shared the same ambition to live in the countryside with chickens roaming around in the garden,’ she says. ‘Within our first year, we built a coop and have over five chickens in our garden. With this house we have made our dream our daily reality. I love living here.’ YH

l Stuffed dates make a great canapé or after dinner treat. For a sweet version, split a date and fill it with a drizzle of melted chocolate and 1 tsp peanut butter. Top with a pinch sea salt and an almond. For a savoury option, cheese and nuts make tasty fillers – try brie and pecan or blue cheese and walnut. l Date butter can be used to naturally sweeten foods, such as porridge, smoothies or cakes, or can be spread onto toast or slices of apple. Make it by covering 100g finely chopped dates with 45ml boiling water. Mash with a fork or whizz in a blender with ¼ tsp cinnamon. l To make sticky breakfast bars, cover 200g pitted dates, chopped, with boiling water for a few minutes until softened then drain and mash with a fork. Combine with 75g nuts, finely chopped, 75g nut butter, 25g seeds, 200g oats and ½ tbsp cinnamon. Tip into a 20cm lined tin and press down with wet hands. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Cut into 12 bars.

YOU WILL NEED 44 tbsp kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) 42 tbsp soy sauce 41 tbsp chilli sauce 4250g basmati rice 43 tbsp toasted sesame oil 43 carrots, cut into matchsticks 4300g shiitake mushrooms 4450g bag spinach 44 medium eggs To garnish 42 tsp toasted sesame seeds 42 tbsp crispy dried onions 4thinly sliced red chillies
DIRECTIONS n Mix together the kecap manis, soy sauce and chilli sauce. n Cook the rice in boiling water for 10-12 minutes. Drain well and keep warm. n Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil and fry the carrots for 4-5 minutes, until just tender, then set aside. Add a further tablespoon of the oil to the pan and fry the mushrooms for 3 minutes, remove, then set these set aside too. n Place the spinach in a large bowl, cover with cling film and microwave on high for 3-4 minutes until just wilted. n Place the rice in the centre of 4 bowls and place the carrots, mushrooms and spinach around the edges in separate piles. n Heat the remaining oil in the frying pan and fry the eggs according to taste. Chicken and prawn laska curry YOU WILL NEED 41 large chicken breast 4170g raw king prawns 475g Mai Siam rice noodles 4120g beansprouts 4100g laksa paste, such as Dollee laska paste 4200ml Mai Siam coconut milk 48 pieces fried tofu puffs To garnish 4thinly sliced red chillies 4freshly chopped herbs 4lime wedge
DIRECTIONS n Bring 300ml water to the boil and poach the whole chicken breast for approximately 6 minutes or until it is cooked through. Poach the prawns in the same water for about 2 minutes, or until cooked through. n Remove the chicken and prawns but keep the cooking water which will now be a light stock. When the chicken breast has cooled slightly, finely slice it. n Soak the rice noodles in boiling water according to the instructions on the packet and add the beansprouts for 1-2 minutes at the end of the noodles cooking time to lightly blanch. Drain and rinse with cold water, then reserve until ready to serve. n Add the laksa paste to the reserved water and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the coconut milk and simmer gently for a further 2 minutes. Add the chicken, prawns and tofu puffs to the curry for 2-3 minutes to heat through. n To serve, divide the noodles and beansprouts between two bowls and top with the laksa curry mix. Garnish with the thinly sliced fresh red chilli, fresh herbs and a lime wedge.

n Preheat the oven to 190ºC/375ºF/Gas Mark 5. Place the salmon fillets in the oven-bake bag or wrap loosely in foil. Bake in the oven for 28 minutes. Once cooked, set aside. n Meanwhile, put the rice in a bowl and cover with cold water. Massage with your hands to remove the starch, then drain and place in a saucepan. Cover with cold water, place the lid on, bring to the boil and cook on a medium heat for 10 minutes. n Remove the rice from the heat and leave the lid on for another 15 minutes to steam, then add in the rice wine vinegar. n Begin to assemble the poke bowls by adding a mound of rice into two bowls, and place a salmon fillet on top of each. Top each with half an avocado, sliced cucumber, sliced radishes, red cabbage, a handful of edamame beans and sliced chilli. n Drizzle chilli sauce over the top of the fillet and sprinkle black sesame seeds over everything. Carrot, sage and Taleggio risotto YOU WILL NEED 42 tbsp olive oil 4400g British organic carrots, peeled and cut into small cubes 41 small onion, finely chopped 450g risotto rice 4200ml dry white wine 41l hot vegetable stock 41tbsp chopped fresh sage 4100g Taleggio cheese, cut into small chunks 430g Parmesan cheese, finely grated To garnish 4sage leaves 4grated Parmesan

n Heat the oil in a large sauté pan or saucepan and add the carrots and onion. Cook gently, stirring often, for 10 minutes. Add the rice and stir over a low heat for 2-3 more minutes, without browning. n Add the wine and let it bubble up for a moment or two, then pour in half the stock. Stir well, then cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. n Cook until the rice is tender, gradually adding the remaining stock, and stirring often. This will take a further 10-15 minutes. Check that the rice is done to your liking – it should be soft, with a hint of bite. n Stir in the sage, Taleggio and grated Parmesan cheese. Check the seasoning, adding a little salt and pepper if needed. Serve garnished with fresh sage leaves and grated Parmesan cheese, with a little extra black pepper. DIRECTIONS n Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion for 1-2 minutes, before adding the garlic, ginger and chilli. Cook for 2 minutes, then stir in the jerk seasoning, tomato purée and remaining vegetables. Stir so that everything is coated and cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring, until it begins to soften. n Pour in the stock and coconut milk, and then stir through the sugar and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil then cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes, until the sweet potatoes are cooked through, stirring every now and then. n While the stew is cooking, add the rice, spring onions, chilli, thyme, allspice, vegetable stock, coconut milk and a pinch of salt into a saucepan and stir. Place over a medium-high heat and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down to a simmer, place on the lid and cook for 10 minutes. Lift the lid and quickly tip in the beans, then recover and cook for 10 minutes more. Turn off the heat and leave to steam for 10 minutes. n Stir the rice and serve with the stew, topped with a scattering of coriander leaves and wedges of lime. DIRECTIONS n Preheat a griddle pan over a high heat and add a touch of oil. Grill the Tenderstem until charred, this should take around 2 minutes. Remove the Tenderstem from the pan. n Preheat a large wok or saucepan over a high heat. Add the sesame oil. Wait for the pan to get very hot. When the pan is almost smoking throw in the minced ginger and chilli. SautĂŠ for 1 minute before adding the tofu and shiitake mushrooms. Toss and stir the mixture while cooking for a further 2 minutes. n Turn the heat down low and add the vegetable stock, soy sauce, miso, rice wine vinegar and maple syrup. Let the soup simmer away for 5 minutes. n Just before removing the saucepan or wok from the heat, throw in the pak choi and grilled Tenderstem. Once the pak choi is slightly wilted, remove the pan from the heat. n Serve the soup straight away, topped with chilli, spring onion, sesame seeds and fresh coriander. Convert the loft
Just as in a standard two-storey home, wasted space between the ceiling and roof can be converted into an extra floor, which can be used as a bedroom or office. To make a loft conversion viable, the floor-to-ceiling height at the apex should be at least 2.3 metres. Raising the roof is a possibility if there isn’t enough height, but this can be costly. Roof windows are the cheapest way to introduce light, though a pricier dormer extension will add more headroom and you may be able to incorporate a balcony into the design. Bear in mind, too, that the joists may require strengthening to support the weight of the new floor.

Create an indoor/ outdoor room
You don’t need to extend to create a room that merges seamlessly into the garden, giving your home a contemporary edge and making it feel bigger and brighter while providing a fantastic space for relaxing or entertaining. One of the benefits of living in a bungalow is having access to ground-floor bedrooms where you can install French windows or sliding doors and wake up to uninterrupted views of the garden. The key is to maximise your glazing, so swap a solid rear wall for wide sliding or bi-fold doors with minimal frames and tracks that lie flush with the ground, and fit similar flooring inside and out.

Planning permission
Despite being on a single level, bungalows are treated as houses rather than flats for planning-permission purposes, meaning that the size limits are more generous for improvements that fall within permitted development. A detached bungalow can be extended up to eight metres beyond the original rear wall, and to a maximum height of four metres; a side extension should be less than half the width of the original building. When converting the loft, you’re unlikely to need permission if the volume is under 50 cubic metres and you’re not altering the roof height or building a balcony.

Although typically associated with seaside resorts, bungalows are found right across the UK, though numbers are dwindling. This is due to their popularity with developers who snap them up, knock them down and replace them with large two-storey houses or blocks of flats which they sell at a tidy profit. As demand for bungalows exceeds supply, they hold their price and a significant proportion of those that do come on to the market are probate sales, usually in need of modernisation and with plenty of potential to add value. Some are offered with planning permission already in place for a substantial extension (or another storey), saving the buyer time and effort.

Snap up a new build
According to the National House-Building Council, bungalows account for only two per cent of new homes, compared with nearly 15 per cent 30 years ago. They’re certainly not just the preserve of retirement communities and are attracting interest from younger buyers who want a lateral home they can put their stamp on without having to take on a refurbishment project. Crest Nicholson, one of a number of house builders delivering new bungalows, reports that young families like the convenience of living on one level so they can easily keep an eye on their children, and some purchasers have fed back that they consider bungalows to be like apartments without the service charge.

Work took around six months as the property almost doubled in size and had to be completely rewired and

Bathrooms are fitted with walk-in showers, and the kitchen features streamlined steel-grey units with toning Quartz Stone worktops and a central island. Once Matthew and Jess had moved in, they realised that their home was brilliant for entertaining – which they recently proved by throwing a massive party to celebrate their engagement! adore old houses, especially ones that were beautifully designed when they were first built and have been well maintained ever since. Every old house has a story to tell. Of course, some stories are more fascinating than others, but with any home I love to know who has lived there, why they lived there, what they did for a living and when they moved on. Knowing the history of a home and understanding who used the rooms in whatever way changes how you look at the spaces you’re about to inhabit. For me, getting under the skin of a building’s past completely transforms and enriches your experience of a place and, as the old saying goes, ‘there’s no place like home.’ I’m currently filming the third season of Old House, New Home. It’s a wonderful series that takes what seem like relatively ordinary old houses and re-crafts them into homes for 21st-century living. It’s very much an interiors show where I reconfigure the internal layouts and upgrade kitchens, bathrooms and interior finishes, adapting the home for modern-day living, while respecting any original period elements of the building that are worth keeping. Weaving contemporary architectural design into the fabric of an old house is an honour and a privilege for me, because hopefully many of the design changes I make will craft the way people live in that particular home for many generations to come. We are literally writing the next chapter of the home’s history and that’s pretty amazing. One of my favourite projects was the refurbishment of an Edwardian home in North London. A young couple had had the good fortune of inheriting a substantial early 1900s house, but it needed a lot of work. The property was built at the turn of the century by a developer looking to profit from the expansion of the London Underground, which allowed garden suburbs to develop
around the edge of the city. These new large homes with substantial gardens provided a wonderful place for the middle classes to live, while the new Tube lines allowed an easy commute into work. One of the house’s first owners was a well-known umbrella maker whose shop still exists in central London. In the 1970s it became the home and workplace of a doctor who timber panelled most of the walls in the hallway to give his surgery a false sense of grandeur. It became dated very quickly and was sub-divided at some point to create a separate waiting room. Too many internal walls on the ground floor created a maze of badly designed rooms, combined with two inappropriate extensions on the back of the house which made it a very ugly duckling. The young couple wanted to respect the old while celebrating the new. We began by taking down the ugly extension and designed one single extension with classic lines and proportions working with, rather than against, the old house. This created a more contemporary open-plan kitchen-dining room linking to a snug with a traditional open fireplace at the very heart of the new plan. If anything, this project was an exercise in creating the perfect entrance hallway. We removed the 70s panelling but replaced some of it with beautiful hand-painted panelled doors for coat storage. A new window seat provided a place to remove boots and shoes. The heavy, ugly, panelled staircase was removed to make way for a lighter staircase with more appropriate open balustrading and a new, but Edwardian-style, newel post. The doctor’s surgery carpet was removed and replaced with a light tile that was contemporary in design but with a pattern that any Edwardian architect would have loved. Classic paint colours on the walls gave the space a timeless quality. And one of my

favourite touches was to remove all of the awful internal doors, which were a mix of styles from the past, and replace them with tall, full-height doors to enhance the sense of space. Some of them even had integrated clear-glass panels so the hallway linked visually through to the snug and kitchen-dining room. Upstairs we created a new master bedroom suite with a bathroom that the couple, and the house, deserved. A large loft conversion added more space for a family that hoped to grow and grow. Overall, it was the most wonderful project. A sensitive refurbishment that took the home back to its Edwardian past, where appropriate, while creating spaces that worked perfectly for 21st-century living but in a way that wouldn’t date too quickly. I love classic designs that stand the test of time in the same way that a piece of mid-century furniture can still look right at home in a 2019 house. Some homes may require a more radical modern redesign; others do better with a more sensitive restoration approach. An architect’s skill is to find out which is right and design the spaces and details to reflect that approach in the most beautiful way while also reflecting the style, personality and characters of the people who will live there. As a gift to the couple in North London, I refreshed my comprehensive-school pottery skills and made them a house-warming gift: a tall, clay umbrella stand, which thankfully turned out OK and proudly occupies a corner of their newly refurbed hallway.
