ALPINE SKI BOOTS

KEY SKI BOOT STATISTICS These are the key freatures and stats that distinguish individual ski boots in the Alpine category. Used along side our SUREfit fitting system, these features will help you identify the ideal ski boots to match your needs and aspirations. CUSTOM SHELL Certain models can have the plastic shell heated and moulded as part of the fitting process in store. Once the boot is heated, the inner boot is inserted and the foot is placed inside, allowing the shell to create a customised shape. The result is a better match to foot shape and evens out the pressure for a more comfortable fit and better control.

CUSTOM LINER All adult boots that Ellis Brigham stock use custom mouldable inner boots. This means they can be heated in store to soften the foam, then cooled whilst the foot is inside, personalising the fit. The result is an even, all-over pressure, improving both comfort and performance.

BOOT FLEX This relates to how much effort it takes to bend (flex) the boot forward. Boots with high flex numbers are stiffer, meaning they are suited to skiers with all or some of these characteristics: fast and aggressive style, better skilled, heavier weight. They feel precise, driving skis extremely efficiently. Less stiff boots perform well at slow and medium speeds, they make it easy to control skis, and are comfortable to use.

LAST WIDTH This gives a useful indication of the amount of space inside the boot. It relates to the width in millimetres of the boot at its widest point, across the forefoot area. The stated width is for a size 26.5 MP (cm) ski boot.

POWER STRAP They help to close the boot and keep the shin in contact with the tongue of the liner. Generally, the bigger the strap the better it is at retaining the leg’s movement. Therefore it takes more effort to use the boot, which will suit advanced skiers better.

VOLUME

5-STEP BOOT FITTING GUIDE 1. ASSESSMENT We want to know about previous experiences with ski boots, both good and bad, and to get an overview of skiing experience and aspirations. This is done alongside an assessment of the size, shape and biomechanics of the foot and lower leg. Using various techniques and equipment, we’ll find out anything that will affect how a boot will fit and make a recommendation for the best options, including the correct footbed solution. 2. SHELL CHECK Ski boots are comprised of two basic components: the softer inner boot, for comfort and control; and the harder shell, for transmission, performance and fit. The shell governs how a boot fits, so a shell check is needed with every boot. The foot is placed into just the shell and the amount of space is assessed in five crucial areas – length, ankle width, forefoot width, instep height and calf. This ensures it’s the correct size, shape, and volume. The shell check will clearly indicate the most suitable models. 3. TRYING ON The next step is to try on the complete boot. Brand new ski boots feel tight and short at first, don’t panic, this is normal. The inner boot is designed to fit in length and volume, initially with no excess space, because with customisation and use the foams form to the shape of the foot. Doing up the boots correctly, leg clips first, brings the heel back into position and gives the toes more room. The boot is left on for 10-15 minutes in a standing position, mimicking a relaxed ski stance. It shouldn’t be necessary to try on more than two or three models. At this point it is crucial to remember that with use, a ski boot’s space inside can increase in volume by about 15%, so a snug fit at the beginning is very important. 4. STABILISING To really make boots perform and be comfortable, you have to ensure your feet are stable while skiing. Boot-fitting problems generally stem from the foot itself, not the boot. Footbeds eliminate a lot of problems, dramatically improving the fit and skiing performance by supporting the foot structure. This helps muscles relax and stops them tiring so quickly, meaning there’s less movement and rubbing caused by collapsing of the foot. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of well-made custom footbeds to successful ski boot fitting.

This gives an overall impression of the space inside the boot and the type of foot it will fit best.

SOLE UNITS How the soles of ski boots interact with ski bindings plays a fundemental role in the binding functioning correctly. There are two sole unit types used in our alpine ski boot range and it is important to understand how they interact with ski bindings: ALPINE. Unless indicated otherwise, all the models in our Alpine Ski Boots range come fitted with Alpine standard sole units (DIN ISO 5355). This is a standard that ensures, when new, the sole unit is compatible with DIN ISO standard Alpine bindings (boots with these soles will also fit into GripWalk branded and MultiNorm/Tour bindings). GRIPWALK. The last few years have seen boot brands work on creating sole units that are safer and more comfortable to walk in, resulting in GripWalk. Look for the GripWalk icon on the boot pages to see the models using this new technology. These soles have more tread for increased traction and a rocker or curved effect on the sole that makes walking feel less restrictive. A boot with a GripWalk sole needs to be used with a GripWalk-specific binding (or a MultiNorm/Tour model) for the release mechanism of the binding to function correctly. All of our current adult Alpine bindings are GripWalk compatible. However, older models of Alpine bindings are unlikely to be compatible with GripWalk boots. Many of the Alpine boots that have GripWalk soles fitted will also have DIN ISO 5355 Alpine soles either in the box or available as a spare part, should you want to use a specific boot with an Alpine binding.

5. CUSTOMISATION Standard ski boots should fit well out of the box, but it is very simple to improve on this as they are designed to be adapted. For many models this is a part of the fitting process and in most cases will involve the inner being heated and custom moulded to the foot. With certain models the plastic shell can also be custom moulded. As specialists in boot fitting we are also able to make bespoke changes to boots. This can take many forms, including modifications to the shell or liner via heating and mechanically stretching materials, carefully shaving plastics and foams, or altering angles and stance. The end result is increased comfort and better performance.

GETTING THE PERFECT FIT Our SUREfit programme is both a way of fitting boots and a system of training. It’s a fitting process that looks at a skier’s history, individual foot shape and biomechanics. It takes into account previous injuries and medical problems, with checks and measures to help you make the right choice. SUREfit training provides Ellis Brigham staff with the skills and knowledge to ensure you get the perfect fit.

SUREfit TRAINING All the staff in our ski departments are passionate about wintersports. Their enthusiasm for what they are doing will make your time in the shop more enjoyable and ensure you leave with the correct product. This interest in skiing is not enough on its own though. That’s why Ellis Brigham provide the most comprehensive ski hardware training programme in the UK. As a result, we have a team of committed and knowledgeable staff who will ensure that the service and care you receive, in any Ellis Brigham store, is of the highest quality.

SUREfit GUARANTEE We recognise that every foot shape is unique, ergo we also recognise the need for unique ski boots. To achieve this, we provide free labour for ski boot customisation; whether it’s the day you buy the boots, after your first ski holiday, even three or more years down the line. This free service includes stretching, grinding and modifications such as softening or stiffening the boot. We want you to be happy with your ski boots so we will always try to remedy any problems you may encounter. Very often this will be resolved by a simple stretch or grind to the ski boot to slightly alter the shape; in all cases we will expect good quality ski socks and supportive footbeds to be used. If we are unable to supply a satisfactory fit, then, providing the ski boots have been worn for less than two weeks (wear and tear will be taken into account), correct socks and footbeds have been used, and there is a proof of purchase (to show the boots were bought from Ellis Brigham in the preceding 18 months), we will issue store credit for 70% of the value paid. This guarantee is offered in addition to your statutory rights, and it is dependent on our advice being accepted during fitting. For further information, terms and conditions contact customer.services@ellis-brigham.com

HOW SHOULD A NEW SKI BOOT FEEL? SUREfit head honcho Steve has been fitting ski boots for over 20 years, including running SUREfit for the last 15 years. Here he gives us his top tips for trying on new ski boots. • At first ski boots may feel tight and a bit short... don’t panic, this is normal. The inner boot is designed to fit in length and volume, initially with no excess space. • Fasten the buckles round the leg first, this will pull the foot back into the rear of the boot. A few ankle-flexes will push the heel further into the heel pocket, producing more toe room. • Don’t over-tighten the buckles. This is a common error that’s pretty much guaranteed to cause foot pain. Clips are there to close the boot, not to hold your foot still. • There should be little or no movement at the heel and ankle when replicating skiing movements. With use the inner boot will increase in volume by about 15%, so don’t be scared of the initial close fit.

Page 6

• Keep the boots on for at least 15 minutes. During this time your body heat will soften and compress the inner boot foam, creating more volume around your foot. You’ll be aware of your toes just touching the end of the boot, and that it’s a snug fit... as if someone is holding your feet firmly with both hands. • If you have issues with the fit, or something just doesn’t feel right, try a different boot in the same size, don’t size-up. • Footbeds, footbeds footbeds... well made custom-moulded footbeds will support and stabilise your feet in the correct alignment, dramatically improving fit and skiing performance.

GETTING THE PERFECT FIT

SIDAS SUREfit CUSTOM FOOTBEDS Skiing and ski boots are unnatural for human physiology. We place our feet in a harsh environment and exert more stress through the action of skiing, so it’s no wonder feet find it hard to adapt to this. Modern ski boots are a blend of comfort and performance, built to enhance your enjoyment: rigid plastics deliver power and control, softer plastics add precision and carefully sculpted foams provide cushioning and hold. Sidas Custom Performance Footbeds Choosing the right boot in the right size is important, but equally so is making sure that the foot is stable inside the boot and supported in a neutral position. An unsupported foot will tire quickly, moving around more and causing rubbing and pressure points as the foot collapses. For this reason we recommend supportive footbeds for every boot we sell. They make the difference between a boot that fits correctly, and a boot that doesn’t.

Supportive Heel Cup

We highly recommend using Sidas SUREfit custom footbeds. They will provide the support and stability for the foot structure within the ski boot, dramatically improving the fit and skiing performance.

Atomic Hawx Ultra 95 S W £320 Sitting just below the Hawx Ultra 115 W, the 95 W is still incredibly lightweight. It has the same medium to low volume shape but thanks to the less aggressive flex it’s aimed at intermediate and advanced skiers or lighter experts. Memory Fit means it is simple to heat mould the shell to more closely match the skier’s foot, a quick and effective process done in store. The Memory fit 3D Gold Liner provides extra customisation via a separate moulding process; the pre-formed shaping of the inner boot increases comfort straight out of the box. Power Shift on the spine allows the forward lean and flex to be adjusted easily and, along with the dual cuff alignment, mean the boot can be perfectly set to your skiing style. This mix of comfort, performance and useful features make the Hawx Ultra 95 W one of our most popular boots. Sizes: 22.0 - 27.0

Prolite means a lighter and more sensitive model without any loss of power or control. Comfort comes from a variety of sources including the tried-and-tested stance that puts skiers in exactly the right position to feel relaxed but also to have good control. The Energy Backbone enhances transmission for better grip. When skiing, the boot is responsive and precise, but also light and balanced. WOMEN’S ALPINE BOOTS Atomic Hawx Ultra 115 S W £380

Atomic Hawx Ultra 85 W £290

Atomic Hawx Magna 105 S W £300

The Hawx Ultra 115 W is a high-end model that is surprisingly light. It has plenty of performance thanks to the Energy Backbone that directs energy efficiently to the ski edges and the chunky 40mm strap that helps apply power to the boot. The excellent Mimic Platinum mouldable liner and a customisable Memory Fit shell means tweaking the boot for the best possible fit is effortless; Thinsulate insulation helps to keep toes warm on chilly mornings. It is the perfect harmony of weight, performance and personalisation. Sizes: 23.0 - 26.0

The Ultra 85 W shares many features of stiffer models in the range, it just uses the softest flex. This makes it the ideal choice for lighter or less experienced skiers who still want great foot hold, precision and various tuning options to tweak the fit and feel. A Memory Fit shell means moulding the boot in-store is quick and easy to obtain a more anatomical shape. Energy Backbone provides the power this skier needs and a mouldable pre-shaped liner delivers the great out of the box feel that the Ultra range is famous for. Sizes: 22.0 - 27.0

The Magna 105 W successfully fills a difficult position in our range: a stiffer boot with extra internal space. Good skiers with high volume feet will appreciate that there is no sacrifice of comfort or performance whilst still providing space. It has a high level of customisation from both the 3D Silver liner and mouldable Memory Fit shell. The shell is easily adapted during the fitting process to give up to 6mm of additional space, the liner fitting adds extra comfort. Customisation doesn’t stop with the fit, Powershift means the flex and forward lean can be adjusted too. Sizes: 23.0 - 26.0

Atomic’s Hawx Prime 105 is made for comfortable high-performance skiing. Salomon S/MAX 100 W £360

The S/MAX 90 W is a performance boot that combines lightness and the very best in terms of custom fitting and comfort. The shell is lighter and more precise than the model it replaced, but the use of Coreframe ensures there is no loss of power. Salomon S/PRO 90 W £320

Salomon S/PRO 100 W £350

The S/PRO 90 W is a key model in our line-up of boots. The first thing of note is the lightness. The thickness of the plastic is reduced to save weight but the addition of a light, yet very strong Coreframe guarantees strength and power. This construction ensures that the shell can be shaped precisely to produce the right mix of foot hold and comfort. Custom Shell HD is used, meaning the boot can be moulded simply and very effectively to better match the skier’s foot. The liner is custom-fitted too, and uses a seamless, pre-formed shape to create a remarkably comfortable feel straight out of the box. A Sense Amplifier cuff guarantees a progressive feel in the boot when flexing, improving the rebound and response. It’s a boot that makes a lot of skiers very happy. Sizes: 22.5 - 27.5

The S/PRO 100 W sets a fresh gold standard in what to expect from medium volume, firmer flexing women’s ski boots. The shell construction ensures the boot feels impressively light, but it loses nothing in precision or power thanks to the use of Coreframe. Custom Shell HD provides an effective and quick custom fitting, the seamless liner continues the theme of weight reduction and also the best levels of customised comfort. An adjustable calf further improves the fitting and a Sense Amplifier cuff adds a progressive feel to the flex. Sizes: 23.5 - 26.5

WOMEN’S ALPINE BOOTS Salomon S/MAX 70 W £280

Fischer RC4 The Curv 105 W £380

Fischer RC One 95 W £330

Low volume, softer flexing boots that still have good performance are not easy to find. Narrower boots tend to be stiffer and softer boots are often wider, so the S/MAX 70 W from Salomon is going to make lighter skiers with slim feet very happy indeed. The shell is thinner than previous versions to save weight but uses a PU plastic so as not to compromise precision. The liner can be heat moulded during the fitting to ensure the best fit, and the use of pre-shaped seamless construction improves warmth and comfort as well saving weight. Sizes: 23.5 - 26.5

The RC4 The Curv One 105 will appeal to advanced skiers who are looking for a medium volume boot that doesn’t sacrifice performance or hold back on custom fitting options. It uses Fischer’s unique Vacuum moulding process that forms the shell to the skier’s foot during the initial boot fit. This reduces pressure points and improves the foot hold at the same time; the comfort is further enhanced by the heat moulded liner. It’s also impressively light, thanks to clever shell engineering that’s thin where it needs to wrap, thicker where it supports. Sizes: 23.5 - 26.5

Fischer’s brand-new RC One 95 W will delight intermediate skiers who want a high volume fit that can be customised to the max. The unique Vacuum process moulds the boot to the skier’s foot during the fitting, ensuring the best all-over shape which means a comfortable even pressure and excellent foot hold. This is enhanced with the custom moulding of the foams of the inner boot. The Floating Entry system ensures easy entry and exit; GripWalk soles make getting around easier and safer. K2 Anthem 80 MV GW £285

It could have been risky when Salomon replaced a best-selling range of boots but last season proved that with the S/PRO 80 W they nailed it perfectly. The shell uses a thinned down PU plastic to reduce weight and a fibreglass Coreframe ensures strength; the lightweight seamless liner has the fit personalised through moulding. Sense Amplifier on the cuff improves precision and rebound. Sizes: 22.5 - 27.5

K2’s Anthem 80 MV GW takes the tech of the high-performance models and dials it back to suit lighter, less powerful skiers. The Prolite Shell ensures the weight is surprisingly low and the response impressive, as well as being custom mouldable to provide the maximum comfort and the right amount of foot hold. Nordica Promachine 95 W £340 Nordica’s Promachine 95 W fuses the feel and precision of a race model with all day comfort and all mountain versatility. The shell of the boot uses Tri Force Construction, a combination of three different plastics. The hardest one creates a rigid spine for power transmission; a softer plastic is used for the anatomical frame and provides excellent wrap and even pressure over the foot. The softest material is on the throat of the boot and results in much easier entry and exit. It’s a significantly lighter boot than previous models and feels more responsive as well as offering better comfort. Infrared Technology on the shell means that the plastic can be moulded and customised where needed. An Isotherm 3D PrimaLoft liner boosts warmth and improves the feel around the ankles with its pre-formed shaping. This fit is taken to the next level once the liner is moulded to the skier’s foot, a simple process done in the store during the fitting. Sizes: 22.5 - 26.5 Custom Shell

Atomic Hawx Ultra 130 S £450 This boot definitely deserves the name Ultra. It sits at the top of our advanced/expert selection with a True Flex shell of 130. True Flex offers something extra compared to traditional PU plastics as it is less affected across a large temperature range. While PU softens or stiffens as the mercury goes up or down altering the way the boot reacts, True Flex stays consistent and the boot feels the same no matter how cold it gets. This high-grade plastic also means an ultra-thin shell can be produced without making any sacrifice on performance or shell stability, only an increase in sensitivity and a noticeable weight saving. The Energy Backbone on the spine effectively transmits forces to drive skis, and the Power Shift on the rear of the cuff allows forward lean to be adjusted and the flex to be altered, ensuring a personalised setup. A 98mm last and pre-formed ankle pockets provide all the foot hold and reassurance good skiers want; the in-store moulded Mimic Platinum liner and shell complete the customisation for the best possible fit. The Prolite Construction lightens the boot and improves the fit and sensitivity without losing any of the power of previous versions. True Flex PU results in a shell and cuff that are less affected by temperature changes and produce a more consistent flex. The Memory Fit shell, aided by the Energy Backbone, delivers precise energy transmission and can be moulded in-store to the skier’s feet for the best possible shape. The pre-formed Mimic Platinum 3D liner is impressively customisable too and the inclusion of Thinsulate material makes it nice and warm. The personalisation goes further. Power Shift alters the forward lean on the cuff and the amount of flex, both can be adjusted to each individual and it’s so simple to do, it can be altered anytime. Sizes: 25.0 - 30.0 Custom Shell

MEN’S ALPINE BOOTS Salomon S/MAX 120 £420 Salomon’s S/MAX 120 represents a radical new way to build boots. Coreframe construction uses an internal frame reinforcement, stiff and sat close to the foot. This allows for thinner shell walls, sensitivity, better transmission and an associated weight saving, without any loss of strength. It makes them one of the lightest, most powerful boots on the market. Salomon use a Sense Amplifier, a softer plastic at the top of front cuff section which is joined solidly to the power strap. This innovation allows for quicker rebound and better snow feel. The liner hasn’t been ignored either, a clever seamless design saves weight and reduces potential pressure points, and it is of course ready to be custom fitted to the skier’s foot. The Custom Shell HD moulding system is faster and more effective than before, resulting in a better shape, comfort and precision. Sizes: 24.5 - 29.5

Salomon S/PRO 100 £320

Salomon raised the bar with the S/MAX 100: lighter, stronger, with increased sensitivity and even more effective customisation compared to previous models and the competition. The Coreframe construction positions a stiff internal frame close to foot for power and direct energy transmission. A softer Custom Shell HD material wraps the foot and is moulded and customised in-store. A complete process taking just 10 minutes. The seamless Custom Fit 3D Sport liner adds extra personalisation as well as warmth. A big hit with good skiers wanting a slimmer fit. Sizes: 24.5 - 29.5

The S/PRO 120 is Salomon’s option for advanced and expert skiers wanting lightweight precision and comfort with the best in custom fitting. Custom Shell HD includes the cuff, meaning that in addition to the clog moulding to the foot, the boot now shapes to the lower leg. A seamless 3D liner is light, warm and comfortable, and can be custom moulded. The stiff Coreframe, Sense Amplifier and Sense Strap combine to boost performance by producing a more progressive flex and increasing rebound. Sizes: 24.5 - 31.5

The S/PRO 100 replaced one of the bestselling boots of the last decade and impressively improved on it. Custom Shell HD is a faster and more effective way of custom moulding a shell to improve the fit; the new pre-formed seamless liner is warmer, lighter and more comfortable, and ready to be heat moulded during fitting. The whole boot is lighter due to the Coreframe construction that places a stiff frame close to the foot so there’s no loss of power. The Sense Amplifier on the cuff creates a more progressive flex and increases the rebound. Sizes: 24.5 - 31.5

COMMON PROBLEMS, EASY FIXES SORE SHINS Too much space around the lower leg will allow it to rock back and forth, banging the shin into the tongue. Pronation creates an inward rotation of the lower leg and during flexion the shin rubs laterally on the tongue. Poor quality socks can worsen the problem. Footbeds will support and reduce the rotation. COLD/NUMB TOES Poor circulation and nerve pressure are the cause. Support from footbeds helps circulation by spreading the pressure evenly over the sole of the foot, allowing muscles to relax and improving blood flow. Heated footbeds are available to further stimulate circulation to the toe ends. Numbness can be caused by the foot collapsing and nipping nerves. Support the bones with a footbed and relieve the pressure. Foot width can be the issue, so adaptations to the boot can help. CALF/ACHILLES PAIN Often caused by poor alignment or lack of balance, tightening and tiring the calf muscle. Tight or short achilles tendons restrict ankle flex. Constant flexing pulls hard on the tendon creating pain centrally in the lower calf (commonly seen in high heel wearers). Symptoms can be relieved and balance improved by supporting the foot and fitting a Sidas heel lift. Regular stretching exercises are recommended.

METATARSALGIA Refers to pain in the ball of the foot and is often felt as a ‘burning sensation’. Poor balance or stance, tight achilles or calf muscle, over-tightening boot buckles, a neuroma, over-pronation, these can all contribute to metatarsalgia. People with high or low arches tend to suffer more. Supporting the whole foot to create a more balanced platform inside the boot with firmly constructed footbeds will help. PRESSURE POINTS Commonly seen on the ankle bones, heels, instep and the widest parts of the forefoot. The most common pressure points are the inner ankle bone and little toe area along the 5th metatarsal, often experienced together due to excessive foot pronation. It can be easily remedied with supportive footbeds and shell stretches to increase space. ARCH PAIN Over-tightening boots that are too big usually leads to excessive downward pressure by the instep buckle. This squashes the foot, makes it pronate heavily and over-stretches the tendons underneath the arch. Other causes for this pain are simple foot fatigue and the more serious problem of plantar fasciitis. Providing effective support with footbeds in a correctly sized boot eliminates the need for over-tightening and provides fatigue-reducing support.

Sidas Shin Protectors (pair) £22 The Sidas Shin Protector is a thin pad of friction-reducing bonded gel for skiers who suffer from sensitive shins. Placed under a sock it very effectively transfers the point of friction from the shin onto the gel pad instead, massively increasing comfort.

Booster Straps Valued by many skiers from racers to freestylers, Boosters use a high strength elastomeric webbing to allow flexibility and shock damping. By replacing an existing Velcro strap, the performance and ski control are maximised. Comfort is improved and the empty space between the boot tongue and shin is eliminated, preventing shin bang, with the Booster also serving as a shock-absorber. Available in two different stiffness options Expert/Racer £45 Intermediate/Advanced £40

Sidas Ankle Protectors (x4) £14 Sidas Ankle Protectors are thin pads of friction-reducing bonded gel for skiers who suffer from sensitive ankles. Placed under a sock it very effectively transfers the point of friction from the ankle onto the gel pad instead, massively increasing comfort.

Sidas Tongue Spoiler £14 Extra volume in the cuff area of a boot results in repeated ‘banging’ and shin pain as the lower leg isn’t held properly and moves about. The tongue spoiler positions between the inside of the shell and the outside tongue of the liner, removing excess space and stopping unwanted movement. 5-10mm thick, pre-shaped, self-adhesive and thermoformable. (Cover not included)

Ski Boot Traction £25 Ski Boot Traction devices allow you to walk confidently and comfortably when wearing ski boots, whilst also protecting the outer sole of the boot. Their tapered shape at the tip makes the movement of the foot easier and their asymmetric crampon design makes walking on snow safer. One size.

USING OUR SKI PAGES

One of the best parts of our job is matching equipment to customer’s needs. Finding the perfect item to improve the enjoyment of whatever sport it is they’re participating in, and nowhere is this truer than with skiing and skis. We take our product testing very seriously – the skis on the following pages are the very best available this year. Our approach to training is equally as committed. This puts us in a great position to help you select the ideal pair of skis. Buying skis isn’t difficult and with the use of this catalogue and the experts in store you’ll soon be matched up with your perfect pair. All that’s needed is some information about your ability, what terrain you’ll use the ski in, then to decide on the most suitable size. It’s as easy as 1-2-3.

STEP 1: ABILITY

STEP 2: TERRAIN

It’s obvious, but it’s important. You need a ski that suits your ability, to work with your skills and experience, helping you to develop as a skier. To help you select the right ski, we have graded them in a constant progression from Novice to Expert and shown this in an Ability Indicator Chart.

Where will the ski be used? To get the best performance from your new equipment, choose a model designed to work in the conditions and environments you want to take it in. To make our range simpler we split skis into four categories.

NOVICE These skiers are tackling green and blue runs confidently and they’re keen to move onto more exciting terrain. Their technique is good on easier terrain but bumps and steeper runs tend to be approached with caution.

ALL MOUNTAIN All Mountain skis are made to mix it up all over the resort. On prepared trails they hold an edge and cut arcs as clean as Piste models. Get them off piste and their extra stability and float shines on powder days and off-the-beaten track adventures in ungroomed terrain.

INTERMEDIATE Intermediate skiers are confident skiing red runs and may attempt easy blacks and fresh snow off the sides of the piste. Bumps and steep runs can often affect fluidity, and off-piste is an mystery still to be cracked! ADVANCED These are good skiers with refined all-round skills and the ability to tackle most of the mountain with solid technique in nearly all snow conditions. EXPERT Ski professionals, instructors, ex-racers, committed seasonnaires: these skilled top-level skiers have the technique and experience to ski anywhere.

PISTE Fine-tuned for pistes, these skis are the ultimate choice for ripping around the groomed runs, laying skis over, feeling the edge grip and chasing clean arcs. They rule on prepared slopes with consistent, smooth snow; perfect corduroy being the holy grail.

FREERIDE Freeride skis are stable and capable of handling anything, from cruisy laps on marked trails to blasting seat-of-your-pants turns through tracked-out junk and, of course, fresh powder stashes. These skis are always flat decked, allowing a choice of Alpine or Backcountry bindings. FREESTYLE Freestyle means just that: the desire to ski without limits - jumping, sliding, slashing; on trails, parks, off piste or at indoor snow centres - anywhere with snow. The skis can be very specific in design such as fat powder chargers or slimmed down, super-poppy park twin tips. Go online to see our huge extended Freestyle collections.

STEP 3: SIZING Your perfect ski length depends on a combination of factors such as weight, ability, flex, shape and the intended use. This is a rough guide to the size you will need. Speak to one of our team for more specific advice. PISTE SKIS: Chin to nose height is ideal for quick responses and easy handling. Go longer for extra stability and wider, bigger turns. ALL MOUNTAIN SKIS: Nose level to forehead height is ideal, but longer length is important if there is bigger rocker or you’re spending more time off piste where the extra stability and float will be beneficial. FREERIDE SKIS: Forehead to over head height. The increased length ensures better grip, stability and floatation and is essential to making the ski work to its full potential. FREESTYLE SKIS: Eye level for the maximum ease of spinning and rail tricks, go bigger for big mountain versatility, extra stability, float and speed.

OUR FAVOURITE SKIS OF THE YEAR These icons highlight our award-winning skis of the year. SKI OF THE YEAR: The main award, the overall winner for the men’s and women’s ranges, chosen based on extensive testing and reviewing numerous reports. Simply the best. BEST IN CATEGORY: Ellis Brigham testers’ favourite ski in each individual category, universally loved... big smiles all round. RUNNER-UP IN CATEGORY: Not every ski can win a category, but these all came very close and are some of the best skis out there.

USING OUR SKI PAGES

KEY SKI FEATURES To make selecting your perfect skis easier we’ve pulled out key information for every ski in our range and below is a jargon buster for the key terms and phrases that will be used in explaining the differences and how they affect performance. RADIUS. The radius gives an indication of the size and shape of turn a ski is most comfortable making, it can be thought of as the ‘natural’ turn-size of that ski. The figures for radii are given in metres, and a small radius on Piste skis for instance, will be approximately 10 to 15m, so they initiate a turn quickly and carve easily. Freeride skis designed for maximum off-piste have a 22m+ radius, which makes them very stable through conditions found away from the piste. On each ski, the stated length for the radius is highlighted in bold. WAIST The waist measurement indicates what terrain the ski is suitable for. Narrower skis will be quick from edge-to-edge on firm snow but not as stable in variable conditions. Skis with a wider waist benefit from increased surface area thus have improved floatation and stability, making them better equipped to deal with softer and deeper snow conditions. On each ski, the stated length for the waist is highlighted in bold.

ROCKER. Skis have a natural bow or camber which spreads pressure evenly along the ski between the widest point on the tip and tail. The more pronounced the camber, the better the grip, response and energy. Recent design has introduced rocker. Coming in all shapes and sizes, rocker is essentially when the nose or tail of the ski begins to rise early. This encourages the nose to lift up and out of soft snow, aiding floatation. It also makes the ski easier to manoeuvre on piste and gives a more relaxed cruisy feel. Putting rocker on the tail helps the ski to wash out of a turn in deep snow conditions, improving manoeuvrability when needed, or to stop them from being grabby at the end of the turn on hard pistes.

SKI DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION Sometimes it helps to know a bit more terminology when deciding exactly which ski to choose. The following is a guide to some of the design specifics that will influence the characteristics of a ski and a brief overview of the main construction techniques and materials that will affect how it performs. SHAPE It’s important to match the right shape to the right terrain. A ski with lots of shape has a relatively wide tip and tail compared to the waist, giving a noticeable hour glass form. It is quick to initiate the turn and easy to carve on hard snow. The ski with little shape has less of a difference between the tip, waist and tail measurements and looks relatively straight along the length of the skis edge. It’s more stable, with predictable handling in soft snow but feels less responsive on piste. Where the widest parts of a skis tip and tail are positioned also affects the handling. A very long nose or tail improves control in rougher terrain, adding a feeling of smoothness; short noses and blunt tails make a ski feel quick to respond and grippy for the length, suiting firm snow best. FLEX Flex is used to describe the stiffness along the ski and the torsional stiffness (resistance to twisting) across its width; both can be tuned by using different construction methods and materials. A stiff model needs more force to bend it and suits more aggressive or heavier skiers, a softer one needs less force to get it to flex and suits lower abilities or cruisier skiers.

CONSTRUCTION Capped construction presses the skis top sheet down over and around the sides of the core, creating a durable ski which is generally lighter than a sidewall sandwich method. This type of construction can be associated with a lower torsional stiffness in comparison to the sidewall construction. Sidewall construction’s layers are stacked on top of each other and pressed down together like a sandwich. This creates a ski with precise edge hold. MATERIALS Wood in a core adds energy to how the ski performs and also increases the longevity. The types of wood will vary depending on the desired effect - lightness, stiffness, responsiveness. Other materials can be added to the ski for various results. Metal will improve the torsional stiffness, increasing grip and precision; carbon fibre can have the same effect without the added weight.

The Brahma 88 has the same name and looks very similar to the previous model but a tweak to the shape and, more importantly, the addition of TrueBlend construction, elevates the performance to a new level. It’s got all the same power, grip and precision, and now even better handling, with the initiation and completion phases becoming smoother and more intuitive; perfect improvements for skiing all conditions. It is, in our opinion, the finest example of an all mountain ski on the market.

SKI TESTING

UK’S BIGGEST SKI EQUIPMENT TESTING PROGRAMME Testing ski equipment is obviously a highlight of our job but more importantly, it’s an essential process when it comes to product selection and training. Our testing programme gives all of our staff hands-on knowledge of how every ski in our line-up performs. This means you can be safe in the knowledge that the skis you see on these pages and in our shops represent the best available and that the advice you get is accurate and honest. Ultimately, it means you’ll get the right skis to make your time on snow more enjoyable. Our testing programme for winter 20/21 started back in December and continued until March when... well, everybody’s world changed. We were lucky to make early ski testing trips to Austria, France, Germany, USA and even Kosovo. We tested a LOT of skis, encountered every snow condition and skied every type of terrain. Glenshee saves the day! The beginning of March usually sees the Snowsports Industries of Great Britain Ski Test taking place in the Alps. Here all the major brands bring their full offer for the following season and our buyers and key shop staff get to ski everything... it’s where we usually make our final ski equipment ranging decisions for the following ski season but this time it was going to be different. As our departure date approached, the news from the Alpine resorts started to get increasingly worrying and we ultimately had to make a call, do we head out only to arrive at a resort going into Covid lockdown... or do we try and find a Plan B? A few quick calls around the industry and a check on Scottish snow conditions found us literally turning around our vans and heading North... Plan B it was, and it looked like Glenshee was going to save the day. As it turned out, it was a really good call, and as the European resorts began to rapidly close down, we had four days of great snow and great weather in Glenshee. We were able to complete the final stage of the ski testing and everybody had an amazing trip and enjoyed fine Highland hospitality!

THE UK’S BEST REAL SNOW TRY-BEFORE-YOU-BUY DEMO STORES Testing skis in the UK is a really useful way to help you make decisions before purchasing. At Ellis Brigham we have the biggest fleet of test skis in the UK, at four of the best indoor snow slopes. Our shops at Glasgow Braehead, Castleford/Leeds, Milton Keynes and Tamworth carry models from virtually all of our partner ski brands. All of our test skis are available for customers to take on the slope and try for themselves, and it couldn’t easier to arrange. Call the shop at your chosen location to confirm the models you would like to demo, arrange your slope time with the slope operator and you’re all set to demo your chosen skis during normal shop hours. Unlike other retailers, there is no charge for you to borrow the equipment, and we positively encourage you to try more than one model. The shop staff can advise on which skis to take out and the best options to compare. If you decide to buy, we will knock the price of a 1 hour slope session off the cost of your new skis* (*terms & conditions apply). Milton Keynes: 01908 609122 Castleford/Leeds: 01977 522040

PISTE SKIS

www.ellis-brigham.com/piste-skis

Fine-tuned for pistes, these skis are the ultimate choice for ripping around the groomed runs, laying skis over, feeling the edge grip and chasing clean arcs. They rule on prepared slopes with consistent, smooth snow; perfect corduroy being the holy grail. While this is fun, firm snow can bring the very best out of the stiffer models; moguls and ice also present challenges to enjoy.

Atomic Cloud 11 WB + M 10 GW £550

Head Real Joy + Joy 9 GW SLR £445

The Cloud 11 Wide Body is the winner of our Piste Ski of the Year award. It keeps the performance and handling of a pure piste model which it is based on, but it’s wider so offers the stability and versatility that more experienced piste skiers want. Servotec Light dampens vibrations for exploring rougher terrain or carving at high speed on piste. A Flite Woodcore, combined with the Titanium Powered reinforcement, gives the skis an infectious energy and sense of stability encouraging you to open up your turns, commit to the fall line for longer and ride the edges harder on firm snow. Sizes: 152, 160, 168

A totally new ski, the Real Joy is sure to do well thanks to the blend of easy handling and fun performance. It’s a piste ski for mixing up the speeds and the slopes; simple to ski when the energy levels drop, fast and responsive when the mood takes you. The light construction of wood core and Graphene keeps the weight down but also makes it lively. The narrow waist of 73mm and short radius provide quick tums with ERA 3.0 ensuring hassle-free control. Sizes: 148, 153, 158, 163

SKI PROFILE Dimensions: Narrower waists for quicker edge changes and fast reactions, typically 77mm or less. The widest parts are towards the furthest points of the tip and tail, creating short noses and tails, maximising the amount of edge for the length of the ski and optimising grip. The radius is often shorter for quicker turns, some models will use a straighter sidecut for stability through longer turns. Rocker Type: High amounts of camber to ensure good grip and response, any rocker if present will be minimal and only on the nose to aid turn initiation. Sizing: Chin to nose height is ideal for quick responses and easy handling. Go longer for extra stability and wider, bigger turns.

ALL MOUNTAIN SKIS www.ellis-brigham.com/all-mountain-skis

All Mountain skis are made to mix it up all over the mountain. On prepared trails they hold an edge and cut arcs as clean as Piste models. Get them off piste and their extra stability and float shines on powder days and off-the-beaten track adventures in ungroomed terrain. Most skis use an integrated binding system to maximise energy transfer; wider models are flat decked to improve feedback and can be mounted with a choice of bindings

Blizzard Black Pearl 88 £490 (£595 with Tyrolia Attack2 11 GW)

Head Absolut Joy + Joy 9 GW SLR £445

Our Women’s Overall Ski of the Year. The Black Pearl is considered to be the best-selling ski in the world, the model every brand aspires to and this latest version is only going to reinforce that. It’s an all mountain ski that is truly happy anywhere on the mountain, from smooth pistes to tricky off-piste runs, care-free cruising to fast, technical turns. The Flipcore WSD construction is the key, producing perfect handling and balance, boosting confidence and encouraging skiers to keep pushing themselves. Sizes: 153, 159, 165, 171

One of our most popular women’s all mountain skis, the Absolut Joy, got an impressive upgrade last year with karuba wood used in the core which, as we expected, boosted its appeal even further. The karuba keeps the ski lightweight and improves the stability in variable snow as well as increasing grip. Adding to the lightweight theme, Graphene is used to fine-tune the flex, making the ski feel supremely balanced even when the snow gets rough. It’s got a huge performance bracket that satisfies skiers from intermediate right up to advanced level and it’s a worthy winner of many awards. Sizes: 148, 153, 158, 163

SKI PROFILE Dimensions: Waists are in 78-90mm range. Narrow for quick edge changes and response on piste, but with enough width to float on soft snow and remain stable in choppy conditions. Tips and tails have some additional length for smoother turning and handling on ungroomed snow. The radius varies, piste orientated skis often use a tighter sidecut for shorter turns. A longer radius is found on skis where rougher conditions dictates more stability, usually associated with the wider All Mountain skis. Rocker Type: Tip and often tail rocker will be used to improve handling on rougher conditions. Camber underfoot ensures grip and response for harder snow and pistes. Sizing: Nose level to forehead height is ideal, but longer length is important if there is bigger rocker or you’re spending more time off piste where the extra stability and float will be beneficial.

FREERIDE SKIS www.ellis-brigham.com/freeride-skis

Freeride is getting away from the pistes and their regulated turns and crowds, finding your own way down, working with the mountain and the environment. Untracked powder is the ultimate, but thrills are found in all the challenges and adventures that natural terrain and conditions present. Skis are stable and capable of handling anything, from cruisy laps on marked trails to blasting seat-of-your-pants turns through trackedout junk and, of course, fresh powder stashes. These skis are always flat decked, meaning a choice of bindings from Alpine to Backcountry.

Elan Ripstick 94W £530 (£635 with Tyrolia Attack2 11 GW)

K2 Mindbender 88Ti Alliance £495 (£630 with Marker Squire 11 ID)

The Ripstick 94W has quietly been making a name for itself as one of the very best women’s skis out there, and this new version is about to ramp that up. It’s a freeride ski that is truly happy everywhere on the mountain from groomed pistes to fresh powder, with bumps, trees, slush and anything else in between. The key is the lightweight design and asymmetric Amphibio construction. There is a distinct left and right ski with more camber on the inside edge and increased rocker on the outside, the result is grip on firm snow and ease of use in soft conditions. This is enhanced by carbon reinforcement on the inside to improve the precision and edge hold. Sizes: 154, 162, 170

Strong female skiers looking for a ski that will perform in all conditions need to consider the new Mindbender 88 Ti. A Ti Y-Beam and tuned Correct Flex core deliver power and grip to the edges for control on hard snow but keep the overall flex forgiving and smooth for tricky terrain. At 88mm under foot they are agile on piste but have ample float if you want to explore; the All Terrain Rocker ensures a balanced platform and predictable handling everywhere on the hill. Sizes: 156, 163, 170

SKI PROFILE Dimensions: Waists of 88mm up to 110mm+. Wider waists provide float for deep snow. Narrower waists in the 90’s are quicker edge-to-edge and feel nimble, suiting a bigger range of conditions. Sidecuts are straighter, meaning a longer radius and better stability; noses and tails tend to be long to create smoother handling when terrain is not groomed. Rocker Type: Bigger rocker on the tips works in conjunction with longer noses for predictable handling, better turn initiation and increased float. Camber underfoot provides grip on firmer conditions. Tail rocker aids turn release to improve control in soft and rougher snow. Sizing: Forehead to over head height. The increased length ensures better grip, stability and floatation and is essential to making the ski work to its full potential.

ALL MOUNTAIN SKIS www.ellis-brigham.com/all-mountain-skis

All Mountain skis are made to mix it up all over the resort.

Atomic Vantage 86 Ti + Warden 13 MNC £660

Atomic Vantage 79Ti + FT12 GW £500

The Vantage 86 delivers perfectly on the Atomic mantra of ‘lighter, stronger, better’. It’s a powerful all mountain ski that’s equally at home laying down precise carves as it is smashing through crud and flowing through powder. Prolite is the key ethos, a built-up chassis that is strong and powerful along the edges and noticeably slimmer and lighter in central areas towards the tip and tail. Sizes: 165, 173, 181

Aimed at confident skiers who spend most of their time on or near the marked trails, the Vantage 79 Ti is a brilliant piste-based all mountain ski. It likes a bit of speed and our testers were pleasantly surprised just how well it performed. With a 79mm waist it’s not the widest but it handles well in crud and when dipping off the side of runs. The combination of Titanium Tank Mesh, Power Woodcore and Cap Sidewall provides a punchy yet stable ride for confidence in all conditions. Sizes: 163, 171, 179

Radius 18.2m Waist 86mm Rocker Tip

Radius 16.1m Waist 79mm Rocker Tip

Tester’s comments: Mark (Trainer) The one-ski solution for all mountain skiers who want it all, without compromise. Fast and precise on piste, stable and powerful off piste.

Head Supershape e-Rally + PRD 12 GW £615

Head V-Shape V6 + PR 11 GW £465

This latest version of the Rally has a bigger waist, slightly longer radius and improved dampening with the clever EMC system. It’s still a carving machine on piste and now it is even more stable when the snow isn’t perfect.

The construction of the V6 ensures it isn’t heavy but also that it’s stable whatever the snow. The ERA 3.0 and shape make turning effortless; the 78mm waist is the perfect all-round dimension for hard snow with some softer bits thrown in.

Head Supershape e-Titan + PRD 12 GW £615

Atomic Vantage 75 C + M 10 GW £370

The new e-Titan is wider, has a longer radius and is more stable than the models that came before; all with no loss of grip or energy. It’s the ultimate choice for a high-performance ski that will crush pistes and smash through rougher snow.

Fun and energetic with surprisingly good edge hold and response. It shines on piste but thanks to the tip rocker and shape, it also feels very comfortable in soft snow down the sides of marked runs.

It is, in our opinion, the finest example of an all mountain ski on the market. Sizes: 165, 171, 177, 183, 189

Armada Declivity 92 Ti £540 (£725 with Marker Griffon 13 ID)

The 87 is a fun, energetic all mountain model or a great all-round BC ski when used with tour bindings. The impressive tech of the Kore range is present with Koroyd, Graphene and Carbon making it impressively light without affecting performance.

The Declivity 92 Ti uses Titanal with cut-out sections for performance on hard snow which doesn't affect the handling in soft conditions. Precision carves can be locked down but, because it isn’t as stiff as other skis with metal, it keeps that playful feel.

Elan Ripstick 96 £550 (£685 with Tyrolia Attack2 13 GW)

Nordica Enforcer 94 £550 (£685 with Tyrolia Attack2 13 GW)

Elan’s excellent Ripsticks have had an upgrade, most significantly with the addition of Amphibio Carbon Line Technology that places carbon inserts over the inside edges of the ski for improved grip without over-stiffening the ski or adding excess weight. The result is the same lightweight performance, just now with added precision and control. The clever Amphibio rocker technology remains, with camber on the inside edge and rocker on the outside, giving the ski excellent edge hold on firmer snow and easy manoeuvrability when offpiste. This the Ellis Brigham Freeride Ski of the Year. Sizes: 172, 180, 188

The Enforcers are powerful all terrain models that strike an impressive balance between stability and fun. Other wood/metal skis might offer similar grip but they miss the energy of the Enforcers. This new 94 version is a versatile freeride ski that deals with anything from hardpack to powder days. The shape makes it feel like a wider ski in soft snow and the construction ensures it deals with pistes and rough conditions. Effective updates to the build, core and tip have resulted in a stronger, lighter, more stable ski that’s also playful and versatile. Sizes: 165, 172, 179, 186

SKI PROFILE Dimensions: Waists of 88mm up to 110mm+. Wider waists provide float for deep snow. Narrower waists in the 90s are quicker edge-to-edge and feel nimble, suiting a bigger range of conditions.

This is our line-up of twin tip skis for the growing number of people who want to be more expressive in their skiing, rather than just making tidy turns down a mountain. The skiing is creative whether at an indoor dome park, hitting up urban features or searching out natural hits and lines. The skis can be very specific in design such as slimmed down, super-poppy park models or fat powder chargers. The common theme is the desire to ski without limits - jumping, sliding, slashing, on trails, parks or off piste, just anywhere with snow. Dimensions: Anything from 85mm to well over 100mm. Narrower skis work best in the park with lower swing weights for spinning and feel more agile. Wider skis take freestyle away from man-made features and use more natural terrain as well as making amazing powder skis. The radius is always longer to maximise stability.

Völkl Revolt 95 £325 (£460 with Tyrolia Attack2 13 GW) Though designed with jibbing in mind, Ahmet Dadali didn’t ignore versatility when he was dreaming this ski up. A non-symmetrical twin may buck the trend of most park models, but it makes total sense as riding switch requires different technique to going forwards. Specific tip and tail butter zones add extra style to tricks; a 95mm waist means you can easily spend the day doing powder runs when it’s dumping. Carbon stringers boost pop; the Multi Layer Woodcore increases strength. Sizes: 165, 173, 181

Rocker Type: Rocker on the tip and tail aids butters and adds forgiveness for landing spins; in softer snow it improves the floatation and handling. Camber underfoot ensures pop for bigger tricks and decent grip on harder snow.

SKI BINDINGS Alpine bindings have fixed toe and heel units, they’re designed to transmit forces cleanly, connecting the skier to the ski and act as a safety device to release in the event of unexpected forces such as a fall, crash or excessive twisting. Traditionally they would only have accepted a ski boot with an Alpine Norm sole (DIN ISO 5355). More recently, with the rise of backcountry skiing and the associated different sole units, some Alpine style bindings will accept various sole units including the Tour Norm (DIN ISO 9523). All our Alpine bindings will accept Alpine Norm and GripWalk sole units. WEIGHT. Measured in grams, shown for half a pair of bindings. Heavier bindings will contain more metal components, making them stronger and better at handling more demanding skiing and environments. DIN. This relates to the binding release force settings (meeting DIN ISO standards) and the range of values on a particular model. The lower the number, the easier the boot will be freed from the binding. Your personal DIN setting depends on age, height, weight, ability and length of ski boot, this will be calculated by a technician. Ideally your personal DIN will be somewhere in the middle of the DIN range. BRAKE. The width (mm) of the brakes determines what size ski waist the binding will fit on. The brake needs to be wider than the width of the ski measured at the waist. Different width brakes are available separately. BINDING TYPE. For a binding to work correctly it must be used with the appropriate boot sole. The following describe the relevant binding types and the soles they work with. Alpine bindings work with Alpine sole units DIN ISO 5355, fitted to the majority of Alpine boots. All Ellis Brigham adult bindings are now GripWalk compatible (see below). GripWalk (GW) bindings are very similar to regular Alpine models except they use differently shaped Anti Friction Devices (AFD) and work with Alpine and GripWalk boots.

Tyrolia Attack2 14 AT £150 The Attack2 should be at the top of the list for anyone seeking a versatile high-performance binding. The FR Pro2 AT toe piece is compatible with Alpine, GripWalk and Tour soles; an NX FR heel is used for all mountain power and precision whilst keeping weight down. Requires a ski at least 80mm wide. Like its bigger brother it’s a go-to choice for freeskiers who demand performance. New toe and heel pieces save weight, increase stiffness and boost power transmission. The Triple Pivot Elite Toe uses a across-axis toe spring for higher energy absorption; the Inter Pivot 3 Freeride Heel has better vertical elasticity. Tyrolia Attack2 13 GW £135 The Attack2 13 is built for skiers who want a tough, compact binding with precision handling for all mountain use. The FR Pro2 toe piece can be adjusted to fit both Alpine and GripWalk soles; a low 17mm stand height gives a real feeling of connection to the ski for better response and control. An NX FR heel ensures all-condition power and performance whilst keeping weight down. Requires a ski at least 80mm wide. Weight 1035g

Marker Jester 16 ID £255 The choice of freeskiers who demand superior performance, the new Jester ID is compatible with Alpine, GripWalk and Tour certified soles. BACKCOUNTRY EQUIPMENT

USING OUR BACKCOUNTRY BOOTS PAGES

The boundaries between Alpine and Backcountry are blurring, with technology swapping easily between the categories and bindings becoming more versatile. it's no longer a straight choice of a heavy, stiff Alpine boot or a lighter but less precise tour one. Today’s adroit backcountry boots utilise a range of modern materials such as carbon fibre and lightweight plastics to weigh little but remain stiff whilst advanced manufacturing techniques are emplyed to deliver greater accuracy and further weight savings.

These are the key features that distinguish individual boots in the Backcountry category. In association with the SUREfit fitting system, these features will help you identify the ideal model for your needs and aspirations.

FLEX This relates to how much effort it takes to bend (flex) the boot forward. Boots with high flex numbers are stiff and drive skis really well. They’re suited to better, faster, more agressive skiers or heavier skiers. Less stiff boots perform well at slow and medium speeds. They make it easy to control skis, and are soft and comfortable to use.

WEIGHT Measured in grams, shown for a half pair. Lighter boots will tend to be less tiring on the ascent.

LAST WIDTH This gives a useful indication of the amount of space inside the boot. It relates to the width in millimetres of the boot at its widest point, across the forefoot area. The stated width is for a size 26.5 MP (cm) ski boot.

R.O.M. Range of Motion describes the amount of movement in the cuff when the walk function of a boot is engaged. The higher the number the more the movement, which should increase hiking and skinning comfort.

VOLUME This gives an overall impression of the space inside the boot and the type of foot it will fit best.

BOOT to BINDING COMPATIBILITY For a boot to work correctly with a binding it must use an appropriate boot sole. DIN ISO standards refer to products that meet specific industry norms, to ensure they are compatible. The following describes the relevant binding types and the soles they work with. GripWalk (GW) bindings are very similar to regular Alpine models except they use differently shaped Anti Friction Devices (AFD) and work with Alpine and GripWalk boots. GripWalk soles fall under the Tour Norm DIN ISO 9523. Multi Norm (MN) bindings can be Alpine or Backcountry in design and function; DIN ISO 9838 Tour bindings accept DIN ISO 9523 Tour boots and regular Alpine boots DIN ISO 5355. PinCert bindings are only for boots with specific inserts to accept the pins, they must also have a Tour or Alpine DIN ISO standard. This excludes some of the very lightest tour boots. Pin bindings are only for boots with specific inserts to accept the pins, this can include some of the very light boots that fall outside Alpine or Tour DIN ISO norms.

Binding Compatibility

Alpine DIN ISO 13992 Alpine standard bindings take boots conforming to DIN ISO 5355 for Alpine boots. The parameters are tight and most touring orientated boots will not fit Alpine bindings. Photo: Arc’teryx

Roxa R3W 105 TI I.R GW £450

K2 Mindbender 90 Alliance £395

Blending the comfort and power of the proven Prime range with the lightness and natural movement of the XTD and Backland models, the all new Hawx Prime XTD is where all mountain skiing meets freeride and backcountry. Memory Fit on the shell means it can be heat moulded to even more closely match the foot shape; the excellent Mimic Platinum liner uses a unique process to take an impressive mould of the heel and ankle area for the best comfort and control. Comes with GripWalk soles and tech insoles so it can be used with a range of bindings. Sizes: 23.0 - 26.0

Roxa’s R3W 105 T.I. is a super interesting option as it mixes alpine performance with freeride capability and a smooth flex dialled in for mixed terrain. Plus it’s amazing value. The 3-piece Cabrio design creates this special flex and also ensures easy entry and exit. Tuning the fit is simple as the shell comes with preformed shaping in hard to fit areas and can custom moulded. To improve on that further the liner is the excellent Intuition Freeride tongue that keeps weight down, warmth up and takes an impressive form of the foot when moulded. Sizes: 23.5 - 26.5

K2’s Mindbender 90 Alliance suits all mountain and freeride skiers looking for a versatile boot that has an easy to manage flex and a medium fit. The Powerlock Spyne walk mechanism creates a 50º range of motion for hiking and provides a powerful connection when skiing. The Powerlite shell is light and responsive and can be heat moulded to create a custom fit; the LuxFit Pro Tour liner is moulded in store too, further improving comfort and foot hold. BACKCOUNTRY BINDINGS

Frame (MN) System

Bindings are the link between the boot and the ski - transmitting steering forces, assisting with absorbing shocks and if forces become too much, releasing the boot to reduce injury risk. Backcountry bindings are designed to also allow the skier to travel up the hill. They can be released at the heel whilst the toe of the boot remains engaged in the binding, allowing the skier to stride and ascend. Traditionally there were two main ways to achieve this, either using a Frame System or Pin System... and recently the Hybrid binding has been launched.

The Frame System uses a bar or rails to join the toe to the heel. The skier remains clipped into the heel and toe of the binding in a similar way to an Alpine model, when skiing or ascending. Going uphill, the system is released from the ski at the heel, allowing the skier to walk with the assembly pivoting at the toe. Frame system bindings suit a wide variety of boot sole units including regular Alpine boots. The Pin System uses a set of two pins at the toe of the binding which are inserted into two compatible holes at the front of the boot. When skiing, these secure the boot, with two pins also slotting into the heel of the boot. When the heel is released, the toe pins act as pivots, allowing the skier to stride in a natural motion. The pin system will only work with specific boots that have matching inserts.

Connecting Frame

Hybrid (PinCert) Systems such as the Shift and the Duke PT blend the efficiency of the best uphill bindings with the power and precision of the leading alpine models. For a combination of ease and weight saving, during ascents they use pins in the toe and the heel is released. On descents they use an alpine heel for control and, depending on the model, the toe will either be an Alpine or Pin style for the downhill. To be compatible with a hybrid system, boots must have pin inserts and either Alpine or Tour DIN ISO standard soles (which will include GripWalk).

Ski/Walk Lever

To simplify choosing the right model for you, all the key information is listed next to each binding and explained here: BINDING TYPE. For a binding to work correctly it must be used with the appropriate boot sole. Multi Norm (MN) bindings fit Tour Norm DIN ISO 9523 boots as well as Alpine and GripWalk boots. Depending on the model, Hybrid or PinCert bindings can work with Alpine, GripWalk or Tour Norm boots in the downhill mode (some bindings such as Kingpins need inserts on the boot), but to ascend they all require a boot with pin inserts and either Alpine or Tour Norm DIN ISO standard soles (which includes GripWalk models). Pin bindings only work with boots that have inserts to accept the pins, including superlight boots that fall outside Alpine or Tour DIN ISO norms. WEIGHT. Measured in grams and shown for a half pair of bindings. Frame bindings are heavier but they are stronger and can handle more demanding skiing. Where weight is a crucial factor for skiers looking to ascend more, pin bindings are considerably lighter but with some limitations in downhill mode. DIN. This relates to the binding release force settings (meeting DIN ISO standards) and the range on a particular model. The lower the number the easier the boot will be freed from the binding. Your personal DIN setting depends on age, height, weight, ability and length of ski boot, this will be calculated by a technician. It is worth noting that as some pin system bindings do not have an industry DIN ISO standard release mechanism and their ratings will be noted as ‘Release Values’.

BRAKE. The width of the brakes determines what size ski waist the binding will fit on. The brake on your binding needs to be wider than the width of the ski,at the same time you do not want too much extra brake width as it may catch. Should a particular binding seem incompatible with your skis due to brake width, different size brakes are available separately.

Marker Tour F12 EPF £300 The Tour F12 EPF adds more muscle to Marker’s touring range. The hollow axle heel focuses energy directly to the rear of the boot for optimum skiing performance; the wide EPF platform drives power to the edges. A height adjustable gliding AFD accommodates Tour, GripWalk and Alpine boots. Requires a ski at least 88mm wide.

Marker Tour F10 £275 MarkerSizes: s Tour F10 is a lightweight touring binding that incorporates well thought-out features with excellent downhill ability. A height adjustable gliding AFD is designed for AT boots but will accommodate GripWalk and Alpine boots. The twin connecting brackets use a glove-friendly lever and allow the ski to flex smoothly.

BACKCOUNTRY BINDINGS Marker Duke PT Marker’s new Duke PT takes a radical new approach to combining top alpine performance with lightweight ascending by using an innovative Ride & Hike toe. For walking the upper part is unlocked and removed revealing a pin system, the upper section is then stored in a backpack. For the descent the upper jaw is locked back into place and the binding becomes a highperformance alpine unit that will take on any terrain. The Inter Pivot 3 Freeride Heel of the Duke 16 has improved power transmission, energy absorption and vertical heel elasticity combined with better step in comfort (the Duke 12 uses a lighter, Hollow Linkage Heel).

Marker Kingpin 13 £450 Marker continue to rule the pin market with the kind of downhill performance and ski control that BC skiers dream of. The new two spring toe is based on the successful Alpinist technology and saves 80g per toe without losing any of the strong grip of the boot or energy absorption. The XXL Power Transmitter on the heel provides highly direct energy transfer thanks to its wide contact points. Walking feels very natural and the binding is easy to operate, even when clicked in. The heel design allows for length compensation, preventing unintended release or affecting ski flex.

BACKCOUNTRY

SKIS

www.ellis-brigham.com/discover-backcountry

The feeling of making new tracks in fresh snow is a very special, especially when the turns have been earned, step by lung-busting step. Backcountry is a diverse category meaning the skis have to be too, but what binds them together is the focus on weight reduction and on pushing the boundaries of ski design. Where they differ is the emphasis placed on the up or the down. The slimmest and lightest skis are about the ascent and achievement as much as the ride back down. Bigger models blur the lines to freeride and are created to charge hard-to-reach steep and deep.

Scott Superguide 95 £525

K2 Talkback 88 W £475

Scott’s updated Superguide 95 uses a carbon/aramid construction and elliptical profile to create a highperforming tour ski that is light on the way up and powerful on the way down. Slight tip rocker improves the handling, a 95mm waist provides all mountain stability and the new Dual Light Wood Core ensures response and energy without excess weight. Happy in any condition on any terrain, they’re an ideal choice for good skiers who love to escape and head off the beaten track into unexplored terrain. Sizes: 162, 170, 178, 184

K2’s Talkback 88 is the flagship of their touring line-up. It’s as capable on the uphill as it is dealing with whatever it encounters on the way down. Paulownia Tour Lite core keeps the weight down without sacrificing energy or control. Carbon Overdrive stringers and a Ti SpYne that positions Titanal sheets underfoot increase dampening and boost torsional rigidity. All Terrain Rocker improves the handling and the 88m waist is perfect for quick turns in tight spaces. Sizes: 153, 160, 167

MEN’S

WOMEN’S

SKI PROFILE Dimensions: Expect to see anything from 85mm up to 109mm in the waist. The sweet spot for an all rounder is 90-95mm, not so big to be excessively weighty, wide enough to float and feel stable but slim enough to remain nimble. The radius will be medium to long for better stability in rough snow. Rocker Type: Rocker will exist on the tip to aid float and handling. Narrower skis will have a flatter tail to improve grip, wider models will introduce a low rocker on the tail to improve release and handling in deeper snow. Sizing: Comes down to priorities. A balance of shorter for weight reduction when climbing up and longer for stability, grip and float when skiing down.

HELMET CONSTRUCTION There are 2 main types of construction in snowsports helmets, In-Mould and Hardshell. Some variations do exist such as using a mixture, known as Hybrid. The safety standards used for snow helmets are European Safety Standard EN1077 and American Safety Standard ASTM2040. Some helmets also meet EN1078 which is for Bicycle, Skateboard and Roller Skating, these are often referred to as Multi-Cert. IN-MOULD CONSTRUCTION. This construction fuses a tough polycarbonate outer shell with the helmet’s impact-absorbing EPS foam liner, for good durability without excess weight. This combination of shell and liner allows for better ventilation systems. HARDSHELL CONSTRUCTION. Hardshell helmets use a durable ABS shell and a lightweight EPS liner bonded together. This type of helmet tends to have less advanced venting but they’re hard-wearing and great value. HYBRID CONSTRUCTION. Hybrid helmets mix in-mould and hard shell builds, this gives a great balance of durability and lightweight. MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System). MIPS is a safety feature that can be integrated into the helmet build. MIPS reduces rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head. In a MIPS helmet, the shell and the liner are separated by a low friction layer. When subjected to an angled impact, the low friction layer allows the helmet to slide relative to the head, absorbing much of the energy.
