elcome to a very special souvenir bridal magazine, Royal Reign.

From the team behind Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine, in line with HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee festivities, we bring you this celebration of weddings inspired by British royalty.

Discover a variety of ways to fill your wedding day with inspiration from royal traditions. From princess-worthy frocks to fairytale flowers and majestic cakes to canapés galore, we are here to help you plan your special day, on which you too will be treated like royalty!

Our bridal fashion feature is inspired by the wedding dresses worn by royal brides, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Featuring Cathedral length trains, beautiful silks and elegant sleeves, royal aisle style is classic and demure. Head to page 18 for regal inspiration.

We’ve searched the length and breadth of Britain to source some of the finest wedding venues (page 146), from castles to grand manor houses – you’ll even find a previous royal palace, Gosfield Hall on page 28, too. Forget the jet lag and plan a honeymoon nearer to home with our roundup of fabulous UK hotels on page 164, which includes The Goring – the only hotel to hold a Royal Warrant for hospitality services and where Kate Middleton stayed the night before her wedding to Prince William. Twelve quintessentially British real weddings are also featured in this magazine, with couples tying the knot in London city centre and further afield in the great British countryside. Take inspiration from these stylish celebrations, starting on page 82. We have really enjoyed working on Royal Reign, a celebration of British weddings, and I hope you treasure it too.

Celebrating a 70 year history of Queen Elizabeth II

une 2022 marks 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation to the British throne, a feat never reached before by a British monarch, as she celebrates her Platinum Jubilee. An institution in herself, it’s easy to forget that it was never expected that she would take up the throne, but she has done so in ultimate service and proved herself as loyal leader to her British subjects. Queen Elizabeth has been by our side as we’ve moved into the 21st century, creating many of the traditions we follow today while also breaking away from others to prove herself as a modern monarch. This inspiration extends to our everyday lives and in this magazine we’ve been exploring the ways in which the British Royal Family have had an impact on our weddings and traditions, following in the steps of the nuptials of our beloved Royals. So join us as we take a journey through the history of Elizabeth II’s life and reign.

Born on the 21st of April 1926, Princess Elizabeth is the elder daughter of Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and started life as a girl who had little chance of taking up the British throne. But when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, her father was crowned as King George VI. Now Elizabeth became heir presumptive to the throne and suddenly the potential to become Queen was closer than anyone expected. Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret had a privileged upbringing, with Elizabeth taking an interest in music, French and developing a lifelong passion for horses that she still holds today in keeping thoroughbred racehorses.

JUBILEE SPECIAL

Fast forward to the 9th of July 1947 and the Royal Family announces her engagement to Prince Philip of Greece, with their relationship developing through visits and correspondence during the war. The platinum and diamond engagement ring was made by the jewellers, Philip Antrobus, using diamonds from a tiara belonging to Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Battenburg. They wed on the 20th of November 1947 at Westminster Abbey, with the ceremony broadcast to over 200 million people around the world via BBC Radio. Following in wedding tradition, Elizabeth had something old in the form of two pearl necklaces left to the Crown by Queen Victoria, something new in the form of her Norman Hartnell gown paid for by collected ration coupons after WWII, something borrowed in her diamond fringe tiara lent to her on her wedding day and something blue in a blue sheath cut from her mother’s evening gown under her wedding dress. Her gown had a 15-foot silk tulle court train embroidered in pearl and crystal gems in Princess style. Elizabeth's parents were also married at the Abbey in 1923, making Princess Elizabeth the 10th member of The Royal Family to be married at Westminster Abbey. She followed many traditions set by her GreatGreat Grandmother, Queen Victoria, and these traditions can be seen continued throughout the royal generations and are explored throughout this special Platinum Jubilee edition of our magazine. The potential for Elizabeth to become Queen became an actuality on the 6th of February 1952 when her father, King George VI, died at the age of 56 and a 25 year-old Elizabeth, on tour in Kenya, became the sixth woman in history to ascend to the British throne. Elizabeth was sworn in on the 2nd of June 1953 at her Coronation held at Westminster Abbey. Her introduction to the British public as their new monarch kickstarted a Queen that was not afraid to create new traditions as she worked alongside the development of technology and had her coronation as the first ceremony to be broadcast live on

The Queen television. Proving the people's love for her, her coronation was watched by 27 out of the 36 million people of the United Kingdom, with a further 3 million lining the route of the Queen’s procession as she made her way back to Buckingham Palace. With British royal weddings becoming global events, Elizabeth was a pioneer for broadcasting her nuptials within the media, a trend taken up by the next generations of Royals as we’ve seen in the international interest within Charles and his son’s weddings. Elizabeth understood the need to connect with the public as she televised her annual Christmas Speech for the first time in 1957, creating a trend we now enjoy every festive season. Elizabeth settled into her role as Queen, having had four children by 1964, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward, and developing a close bond with Winston Churchill, the first of 13 Prime Ministers she would work with throughout her reign. In 1977, the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years on the throne, one of many achievements during her time as Queen. Watched by 750 million people in 74 countries around the world, Elizabeth’s eldest son Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer on the 29th of July 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral. With a lavish ceremony, dubbed the “wedding of the century”, the young Diana attracted mass media attention and soon gained the title of 'The People’s Princess'. Her dress has become one of the most iconic of all time, a fulfilment of her princess fantasy with puffy sleeves, floating silk and the longest train in the history of royal wedding dresses at 25-foot. The royal influence was proved when the first knockoff of Diana's gown was in a department store barely five hours after the ceremony. Following in the tradition of royal brides wearing tiaras, Diana’s headpiece was a family heirloom dubbed the Spencer Tiara, with Kate and Meghan also both donning tiaras lent to them as heirlooms. The Queen’s steps into the 21st Century were met by her Golden

Jubilee in 2002, marking 50 years on the throne, becoming the first British monarch since Queen Victoria to celebrate this achievement. The 2000’s also saw the weddings of her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, marking a new generation of Royals. Prince William married Catherine Middleton on the 29th of April 2011 at Westminster Abbey. With a celebration watched by the nation, they conducted many traditions Elizabeth set and followed at her own wedding, including carrying myrtle, the herb of love, in the wedding bouquet and travelling down the streets of London in a horse-drawn carriage to greet members of the public, as Elizabeth did at her own wedding and coronation. William’s younger brother, Prince Harry, married Meghan Markle on the 19th of May 2018 at Windsor Castle. Harry and Meghan followed in Elizabeth’s tradition of the ‘walkabout’ as they met well-wishers on the streets of London the day before their wedding, something the Queen pioneered when she took a stroll to meet crowds on tour in Sydney rather than wave from a protected distance. Harry and Meghan marked a new kind of royal wedding, literally deconstructing many trends such as the usual tiered iced wedding cake which they changed into separate layers presented with real flowers on ornate platters. Celebrating her Sapphire Jubilee in 2017, Queen Elizabeth became the first British monarch to reach this 65 year milestone and officially became our longest reigning monarch in history. Now, as celebrations are underway for her Platinum Jubilee in June this year, it is clear that she has inspired and influenced British culture as well as the traditions that have extended out to her family and in turn to our own weddings and celebrations. From previous traditions, as well as those she has set, Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family have been the ultimate inspiration for this souvenir issue as we explore the past, present and future of British wedding celebrations and how they are closely linked with the beloved themes and trends seen at royal weddings. Achieving that flawless bridal look is all about creating a classy and elegant makeup style. As a Bridal Makeup Specialist, Olivia Marshall's number one rule, no matter what the client desires, is to enhance their unique features. The look needs to be timeless — who better to draw inspiration from than the Royal Family?

Details

A touch of rouge Makeup Artist, Olivia Marshall, gives us the low-down on creating your big day beauty look…

Prep: To create that natural healthy glow resembling each of the modern royal brides' ‘my skin but better’ complexions, the skincare regime starts months before. I recommend regular HydraFacial services as well as a strict personalised skincare routine. Pre-wedding night apply Garnier Moisture Bomb sheet mask or for a more luxe option Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant Facial Dry mask to rejuvenate, hydrate, plump and smooth the skin. On the wedding morning, prep with Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base and Eye Base. They work as a moisturiser and primer in one that awaken, prep and plump the skin, giving a flawless base for a lasting makeup application. Brows: A vital part for creating timeless and elegant makeup. They should frame and enhance your face, so say goodbye to brow trends for your bridal makeup… I expect laminated brows will be a regret in future wedding photos! Use a West Barn & Co Brow Pencil that matches your root colour and fill in mimicking little brush hairs following the direction of your natural brows. Set them in place with West Barn & Co Soap Brows. Eyes: The trick to a regal makeup look is to focus on defining the eye. To achieve the royal smokey eye, apply Bobbi Brown’s Long-wear Cream Shadow Stick over the eye. Once blended, smoke it out with a matte eyeshadow to soften the look. Kate Middleton used soft greys for her look, while Meghan Markle opted for warm rusty tones and coppers. It’s all about what complements your eye. Eugenie’s eye makeup incorporated a light shimmer

shadow to create that sparkle in her eyes, NARS ‘Shooting Star’ eyeshadow is my favourite for a clean shimmer. Apply Inglot Eye Liner Gel on the upper lash line and waterline to define the eye further. Run Charlotte Tilbury Eye Cheat pencil in the lower waterline for a fresh and clean look. Finish the eye with waterproof mascara and Ardell Individual Lashes for a fluttery natural lash. Complexion: To recreate Meghan’s radiant and dewy skin, apply NARS Sheer Glow Foundation to even out your complexion, then colour correct under the eye with Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Vanish and conceal with Glossier Stretch Concealer. Next, use Chanel Les Beiges Bronzing Cream on your forehead, cheeks and nose for a healthy glow. The Duchess of Cambridge's rosy flush is vital in creating that regal look. To achieve this, apply Charlotte Tilbury’s Peachgasm for that initial glow and set with Milani Bakes Blush in Rose d’Oro. Apply Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish powder on the forehead, nose and chin to avoid any shine and set under the eyes to avoid creasing. To create Eugenie’s beautiful glow, apply Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Superstar Glow Highlighter on top of the cheekbone. This will also elongate the cheeks. Lips: Natural rose or nude lips are key for any royal look. Apply Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat in the Pillow Talk shade to create a plumper and clean lip. For a perfect peachy nude lipstick, complete your look with J K Magic, or for a beautiful subtle rose use Kidman’s Kiss by Charlotte Tilbury.

Florally Yours

Lavender Green Flowers, the florists behind both Pippa Middleton and Sophie Wessex’s wedding blooms, fill us in on all things floral, from scent to sustainability… ROYAL WEDDING FLORAL THEMES TEND TO LEAD THE WAY, BUT WHICH STYLES HAVE ENDURED OVER TIME? “The main theme which has lasted is exquisitely delicate bridal bouquets, particularly wired designs full of fragrant Lily of the Valley and Stephanotis, adding scent as well as style. Royal weddings also have lots of abundant British foliage, we love the simplicity of an avenue of Birch Trees and elegant garden urns overflowing with Honeysuckle, Beech and Whitebeam guiding the way to the ceremony.” MYRTLE, THE HERB OF LOVE, IS OFTEN USED IN ROYAL BOUQUETS. ARE THERE ANY OTHER PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL FLOWERS THAT YOU INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DESIGNS?

“More than anything we are led by our couple’s wishes, incorporating flowers that mean something to them, whether that’s a bloom from a beloved family garden or hidden touches of a favourite colour or fragrance of a departed loved one. Personally, we love the story behind Rosemary, it was carried by brides in Victorian times to symbolise bringing memories from their old family homes into their new marital homes, so it is very poignant.”

Details SCENT PLAYS A HUGE FACTOR IN CREATING AN IMMERSIVE EVENT EXPERIENCE, ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC FLOWERS THAT YOU RECOMMEND FOR CREATING A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING FRAGRANCE? “So many! Blousy English Garden Roses give a sweet, nostalgic summer fragrance, while Freesias and Tuberose are the perfect pairing for classic and glamorous black tie affairs due to their clean floral fragrance. For the festive season, we recommend the scent of mixed Pine foliage with dried Citrus and Cinnamon to really make your venue pop. In terms of visual aesthetics, consider trailing Jasmine, Eucalyptus or Geranium Leaf for an understated but beautifully fragrant design.”

Freesia WHERE IS THE LAVENDER GREEN FLOWERS STUDIO BASED? AND HOW DOES THE TEAM CRAFT A UNIQUE PLANNING EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY BRIDE AND GROOM-TO-BE?

Tuberose

“We are lucky enough to have two homes! Our Windsor hub is where all our departments come together, culminating in an Aladdin’s cave for our couples to wander through full of hardware and our busy florists’ team in action. Our beautiful flagship store is based in Chelsea, and this plays host to the majority of our floral design consultations. We love to try and meet every couple in person so we can form mood boards and design proposals once we know what is important to them.” IF COUPLES DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START, HOW DO YOU PROVIDE THEM WITH CREATIVE INSPIRATION? “The first thing we do is ask them for their ‘words’! This can be anything from how they want their wedding day to feel to how they would describe their personal style. This is more beneficial to us than themes or colours as from this we can transform their chosen venue into their home for the day with a range of flowers and foliage that suit them in particular. Our range of techniques, including sketching key designs and using floorpan sketches to layout their day, often changes our couples from arriving apprehensive to leaving excited.” SUSTAINABILITY IS A RISING CONSIDERATION IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY, WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY INITIATIVES DO LAVENDER GREEN FLOWERS SUPPORT? “Sustainable practice is something we are proud to have championed for a number of years, addressing sustainability across our four core aspects of business: Design, Purchase, Legacy and Waste. We do things such as offering foamfree designs or living designs so that they can be planted or re-used, as well as using seasonal flowers from British growers wherever possible. We are particularly proud of our WEDDINGSANDHONEYMOONSMAGAZINE.COM

expanding donation initiative, which sees preloved designs donated to local charities and has led to special projects such as the building of an educational allotment at a local children’s mental health hospital. We love to give back to our community.” IN YOUR EYES, WHAT IS THE KEY TO HAVING MEMORABLE FLORALS AT BOTH UK AND DESTINATION WEDDINGS? “We believe in keeping it personal and tailored to the couple. One of the most important features are those meaningful touches that make loved ones feel included and we are honoured to be part of that process.” WHAT UP-AND-COMING FLORISTRY TRENDS DO YOU FORESEE FOR THE 2022 WEDDING SEASON?

also think there is a movement towards creating statement areas of design around your venue rather than dressing every surface, these ‘wow’ moments could include things like a candlelit woodland walkway up the aisle or an overhead fragrant canopy enveloping guests in flowers during a toast to the happy couple. Also, expect lots of experimenting with floral structures as florists transform the usual arch shape into bespoke masses of foliage to artistically frame the couple, this might be cloud-like designs of wispy Astilbe and Waxflower or hundreds of vases of tied stems in striking colours to create something chic and architectural.

It’s all about those ‘wow’ moments in 2022 and we can’t wait to be part of it!”

A Slice of Royalty Join us as we chat about royal trends and traditions with baker Emma Dodi and the history of British wedding cakes...

F

rom the Victoria sponge to the Battenberg cake, the Royal Family has had a big influence on our favourite baked treats and this is particularly predominant when it comes to our wedding cakes. We’ve been asking baker to the stars Emma Dodi for her thoughts on all things regal, ranging from royal icing to royal trends. Follow us as we delve into the history of wedding cakes and explore how to capture the classic royal elegance of fillings, icing, tiers and all things cake! When it comes to wedding cakes, there are a lot of traditions for couples to follow and get inspiration from, with a few of them stemming from royal weddings. Cutting the cake together is the first activity you perform as a couple, but it was originally done solely by the bride to represent her initial steps into married life. Now it is done together as a general symbol of ‘good luck’ to the couple. Another tradition is that of freezing the top layer of cake to eat on your first anniversary or first child’s christening to extend the luck that the cake brings. Queen Elizabeth II saved a tier of her wedding cake for Charles’ christening the following year. This dates back to times when wedding cakes were made almost exclusively of a liquor-soaked fruitcake and the high sugar and alcohol content acted as great preservatives. Fruitcake has been the traditional choice of wedding cake ever since Queen Victoria had an English Plum cake for her nuptials in 1840. Prince William and Kate continued this tradition with their eight-tiered fruit cake in 2011, but Emma Dodi doesn’t think this tradition will translate into the future. She mused that “couples seem to prefer lighter sponges, normally vanilla or chocolate with heavenly fillings like passion fruit, raspberry or lemon yuzu”. She could only think of one traditional fruit cake order in the past four years! This departing trend was represented by Prince Harry and Meghan who chose to have a lemon and elderflower sponge, symbolising the “lighter sponges” that Emma Dodi is seeing a move towards. She thinks this change in tradition is representative of a “real change in the way couples think about their wedding day” as this is “a generation that is very willing to break away from tradition and try new things”. From this, we can see the Royals are also starting to switch up

JUBILEE SPECIAL

their beloved traditions. As well as starting the fruitcake tradition, Queen Victoria inspired many other wedding cake trends for the Royal Family and beyond. The elegant white colour of wedding cakes emerged during the Victorian era, as icing made from pure white refined sugar was a symbol of grand status due to the high cost of sugar at the time. Therefore, the lighter and whiter the cake, the wealthier the couple would appear to the guests. Will and Kate slightly veered from the traditional royal icing covering, which Dodi stated is a “very hard” icing, for fondant and sugar paste decorations. Emma loved the “beautifully delicate lily of the valley flowers” made from sugar paste that adorned their cake. To avoid the hard, unforgiving look of royal icing traditionally used for royal cakes, Emma recommends a “‘white on white’ buttercream cake” which has a “white body for the cake and white piped decorations” to capture the royal look. She uses Swiss meringue buttercream on all her cakes and applies it to “create elegant, detailed piping” which can emulate the traditional, royal feel of piped flowers and scrolls. Flowers are a very traditional feature for wedding cakes but Emma Dodi has been seeing a change from iced floral decorations to the use of real flowers. She notices that “flowers have always been a huge influence on wedding cakes” but now “we are seeing a move away from sugar flowers towards the more natural edible flowers”. Harry and Meghan followed this current trend, having real white peonies and wild roses adorning their cake, rather than the usual sugar paste decorations. Emma is seeing this a lot within the cake world, putting it down to “couples wanting more natural and organic weddings which are more in touch with nature” as the use of “real or edible flowers gives you a more gentle, softer and romantic look”. This still encapsulates the classic elegance of the royal wedding cakes without it being too “structured and rigid” with the use of sugar flowers. Emma uses flowers a lot in her work, particularly in her Oscar de la Renta cake inspired by the flower dress, and is a big advocate for adorning your cake with blooms. She loves the contrast between icing and flowers and mused, “why not use the real thing if you can?”. The Royal Family have certainly had a big influence on the way we have our wedding cakes, from the filling and topping to the size and colour. Traditions from Queen Victoria's reign are still going strong in the 21st Century and we can see the next generation of Royals subverting these trends to follow current ideologies, honouring both the past and future of cake-making.

With the aim of bringing together haute couture details and the beauty of nature, the team behind this styled photoshoot created an opulent secret garden theme. Florals play a major part in the styling, with bold blooms bursting out of lined envelopes, edible petals garnishing pretty cocktails and a decadent cake featuring handpainted florals. In addition to the elaborately decorated two-tier cake, iced biscuits, macaroons, cupcakes and other individual desserts added mouth-watering interest to the sweet table. Blacks, purples and greens with accents of glimmering gold created a rich colour palette, while the Chinese gardens within the grounds of Grantley Hall, where the photoshoot took place, made the perfect backdrop. The model makes a statement in a high-drama, black, ballgown that features a plunging neckline, lace details and feather trim on the capped sleeves. The overall look is softened with a delicate up-do and frilly blooms in her bouquet.

occasion A Royal

Find regal inspiration in real life royal wedding traditions...

Jewel in the Crown

Royal weddings are the ultimate trendsetter for wedding day style, from dresses and hats to flowers and stationery. With a rich contrast between extravagance and understated simplicity, inspiration from the Royal Family ensures your day will have a classy, elegant and timeless touch that's fit for any queen. We've rounded up some snippets for you to steal from the most iconic days in the history of weddings.

1

Fairest Flower Every British royal bride since Queen Victoria's wedding in 1840 has carried myrtle in their bridal bouquet. Originally used to signify Victoria’s love for Albert, this started the tradition of royal brides having small, classy bouquets filled with white blooms. As well as being practical, they symbolise the purity and elegance synonymous with royal weddings. Find inspiration from this trend by including flowers like lily of the valley, freesias and sweet peas in your own bouquet.

23

davidwheelerphotography.co.uk

Your wedding day is probably one of the only days in your life when you can get away with wearing a fancy tiara, so make the most of the opportunity to don a glistening headpiece like a royal bride. Usually passed down from previous generations, tiaras and headpieces truly complete the princess look and you can modernise the style with a classy hair comb or a headband for an on-trend look.

Statement Trains

When it comes to trains for the dress, it’s the bigger the better for the Royal Family. Royal gowns typically feature fabric cascading all the way down the aisle in floods of lace and satin, and you can adopt this extravagant style too, to feel like a fairytale princess. For practicality, the modern bride can consider bustling the train up or searching for a gown with a detachable train for ease of movement when it comes to dancing the night away.

4

A Fairytale Entrance Every bride wants the princess fantasy on their big day, so take a leaf out of Kate and Meghan’s book and pull up to your ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage. This romantic ride is a stylish way to start your royal-themed day and is often available as part of a package at castles and historic venues. amylouphotography.co.uk

Vintage Ride As well as a horse-drawn carriage delivering you to your ceremony location, why not indulge in a vintage car to whisk you off to your reception or to the airport for your honeymoon to begin. Royal couples often opt for Aston Martins and Jaguars, so why not get a taste of the high life with some glamorous wheels.

Planning A Slice of Royalty Showing their flair for understated elegance, royal wedding cakes usually contrast size with fine details. Give a nod to the Royals by choosing an ornate white frosted cake with scrollwork and neat icing, the more tiers the better – Will and Kate had eight!

Royal Colours

7

Borrow some style tips from the Royals and use a colour palette of white with pops of royal blue and gold. This is the perfect way to mix understated elegance with flashes of extravagance. Royal blue symbolises wealth and reliability, making it a perfect colour to include. Complete your table settings with crisp white table cloths, gold cutlery, royal blue napkins and taper candles.

8

Regal Rings

For almost a century, since the Queen Mother started the tradition when she got married in 1923, the British Monarchy has sourced the gold for their wedding bands from the same mine in Wales. Make this convention your own by using the same metals your family used before and pass the tradition onto your children to tie all of the generations together.

King of the Castle

The venue is a key part of any wedding and the Royal Family opt for British locations brimming with history and traditional charm. Think high ceilings, stained glass windows, chandeliers and banqueting tables. Explore our Grand Venues feature on page 146 for all the castle, manor and country house inspiration you'll need for your own wedding.

11

9

Royal Invitation

Opting for classic stationery to complement their elegant styling, the Royals keep their invites simple with crisp white linen and black print lettering. Despite what you might think, royal inspired invites should be free from embellishments and fuss. Keep it simple and let the words do the talking – you can always add a flash of gold for a luxury touch.

10

Put Your Stamp on It

Originally used on official royal documents to guarantee a lack of tampering, wax seals are more for ceremony than security nowadays, but they provide you with the chance to add an ornate touch to your wedding invites. You could even get a stamp designed with yours and your partner's initials or create a personalised monogram like a true royal couple.

Dress like a Princess

Royal brides are the perfect combination of style and modesty and you can emulate their look without the eye-watering royal price tag! A royal wedding dress doesn’t mean you have to be covered from head to toe in swathes of fabric. You can tastefully show a flash of skin, like Kate, with lace sleeves or feature a Bateau neckline, like Meghan, to keep it classic and sophisticated. '2208' jesuspeiro.com

13

Wedding Portrait

The Royals love to get the whole family together for an official wedding portrait on their wedding days. Make it a point on your special day to get a shot of your whole clan and create a picture to treasure.

Dress Code

14

A royal wedding is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up to the nines, so make sure your guests are fit for a royal audience by creating a formal dress code. Royal weddings have produced some iconic fascinators, hats and day dresses over the years, which make great ideas for family and friends. The men can don their finest hat and tails in morning coats and polished black shoes, or even uniform if they’ve served like the Royal Princess.

16

Flower Girls and Page Boys

Children are key to royal bridal parties, with the bride being preceded down the aisle by a flurry of flower girls and page boys. Children walking down the aisle before the bride symbolises growing up and stepping into adulthood. You can adopt this tradition into your own day by dressing the flower girls in white taffeta dresses and flower crowns and putting the boys in peter pan collars and breeches for an adorable look. pronovias.com

17

15

Flower Power

Harry and Meghan hired a team of 28 florists to create a huge flower arch in the entrance of St. George’s chapel. It had a serene colour palette of green and white, and featured a touching tribute to Harry’s mother, Diana, by using her favourite snow-white roses in the display. A flower arch is a great way to make a feature out of the entrance to your venue, or as a backdrop to guarantee some incredible photographs.

Blusher Veils Royal brides use veils to represent their modesty and purity by leaving their face covered until it is unveiled by their prince charming at the altar, not to mention that 'wow' moment when the groom sets eyes on his beloved for the first time. Feature a blusher veil in your own wedding and you can capture that magical princess unveiling moment for yourself.

Rich and Regal

18

chloewinstanley.com

It is no surprise that the Royal Family use only the very best fabrics for their outfits, featuring floods of lace, satin and velvet across their looks. Use rich fabrics for your dress and suits to create an extravagant look. The Royals love to work with British designers to showcase the best of our nation, so why not look locally for your own outfits and support a local British source.

19

Royal Family

If there’s one thing that is central to the Royals' wedding days, it’s family. Meghan had the California poppy and Kensington Palace’s Wintersweet embroidered onto her veil to represent hers and Harry's homes. You could echo this by asking your parents and grandparents what flowers and colours they used on their big day to tie your family in.

Evening Glamour

66

20

Follow in royal footsteps by having a change of dress for the evening celebrations. Take inspiration from Meghan who changed into a chic, high-halter-neck dress with an open back or Kate who changed into a strapless satin gown with diamanté detailing and a fur bolero. Keep it simple and comfortable to give you the freedom to dance the night away with your loved ones. JUBILEE SPECIAL

A British feast Treat your guests to a wedding day menu full of comforting, classic, British dishes…

Theme your entire menu around British favourites, with fish and chip cones and pies or a trio of British puddings for your wedding breakfast finale. We guarantee your guests will go home with mouth-watering memories… YORKSHIRE PUDDING CANAPÉS Voted one of the most popular foods in Britain, the Yorkshire pudding is a versatile side dish that can be served in numerous ways. Made from a batter of eggs, flour and milk, serve up miniature versions 68

JUBILEE SPECIAL

filled with beef and horseradish for one of your canapé offerings. WELSH CAKES If you want to include both savoury and sweet canapé options, throw in a nod to Wales with mini welsh cakes. Dating back to the 19th Century, this traditional sweet bread with dried fruit will keep your guests from getting too hungry while you are off having your couples photographs. Alternatively, you could wrap them up, tie them with string and pop them on place settings as your wedding favours.

Planning SCOTTISH SALMON Smoked salmon is a firm favourite on a wedding menu. Whether it’s a smoked salmon paté, Scottish salmon Gravadlax or smoked salmon and creme fraîche blinis served as canapés - the combinations are endless. Also, Scottish salmon is sustainably raised off the coast of Scotland. MEAT AND VEG For a more traditional threecourse breakfast, choose a hot and filling main course of roasted meat, potatoes and seasonal vegetables with a staple British sauce – gravy! Filling and delicious, most couples opt for a sit-down meal with a selection of courses. Make this choice more interactive by having the meat brought to the tables on boards and nominate one guest from each table to carve up and serve to the rest of the table. HAGGIS, NEEPS AND TATTIES Choose a small version of this Scottish dish as a starter for your wedding breakfast. Make the dish more sophisticated by offering a little portion of breaded haggis served with a dipping sauce, or with diced potatoes, swede and turnips on an artistically arranged plate.

PIE AND MASH Delicious savoury meat or vegetable fillings encased in crumbly pastry, pies are a British favourite! Serve up pies with mashed potatoes and gravy for a hearty main meal or as a selection of small individual pies for an easy-to-eat snack during the evening reception.

AFTERNOON TEA Forgo the traditional sit-down meal in favour of a quintessentially British afternoon tea. This style of dining is perfectly paired with a historic Manor or Orangery setting. Served on dainty China crockery, guests can fill up on finger sandwiches, tartlets and savouries, before tucking into scones with clotted cream and jam and finishing with a selection of sweet treats, cakes and pastries, all washed down with a pot of tea and a glass of Champagne. PICNIC CLASSICS From scotch eggs, porkpies and sausage rolls to strawberries and cream, treat guests to a selection of picnic favourites for your summer wedding. You could even have the food displayed in large picnic hampers along a trestle table for guests to help themselves. Lay tables with checkered napkins or go for an informal vibe with picnic blankets and hay bales for guests to sit on. WEDDINGSANDHONEYMOONSMAGAZINE.COM

ICE CREAM A day spent at the seaside in Britain isn’t complete without a scoop of ice cream and a waffle cone! Excited younger guests – and the young at heart – will be at the front of the line for this foodie treat. A traditional ice cream van will provide summer fun for an outdoor celebration – think a coastal location or lawns with garden games. Alternatively, serve little tubs of ice cream, with a selection of toppings, between the wedding breakfast and evening reception. CORNISH PASTIES If your wedding breakfast is due to finish quite late in the day, you might want to opt for a lighter snack for guests to tuck into in the

70

JUBILEE SPECIAL

evening. Originating as a convenient lunch for miners, fishermen and farmers, the Cornish pasty is now renowned around the world. With dirty hands, the workers would have held the pasty by the crust, which would then be discarded. Now, of course, the whole lot is devoured! Dish out miniature pasties in place of a traditional evening buffet. FISH AND CHIP CONES Another British classic, in the evening, is individual fish and chip cones for each of your guests to keep hunger at bay. Once the dancing begins and the drinks start flowing, a cone of crispy battered fish and fluffy chips are sure to hit the spot.

Planning

HOG ROAST If you think of historic English feasting you’ll probably picture long banqueting tables with a selection of roasted meats. In a nod to old-age dining, why not choose to serve a hog roast as your wedding breakfast? Floured baps filled with succulent pork and sweet apple sauce is always a big hit. Coleslaw, salads and potato salad served alongside will ensure guests can fill their bellies. This is a delicious option for summer weddings held outside or autumnal feasting while watching a firework display as the night draws in. IRISH STEW Hand out individual bowls of Irish Stew to guests during the evening reception. Traditionally made with root vegetables and lamb, this hearty dish will warm guests at a winter wedding reception and will be especially well received if they have just been outside to get involved in a sparkler moment! CHEESE AND CRACKERS Cheese towers are ever-popular, instead of a traditional wedding cake or in addition to one. Serve up a selection of cheeses, bread, crackers and chutneys in the evening for your guests to keep coming back to in-between dancing. Alternatively, you could add a fourth course to a sit-down meal, with cheese boards placed in the middle of each table

that guests can share. Be sure to include a Somerset Cheddar for the English cheese representative! GREAT BRITISH BAKE-OFF If your venue permits outside catering you could ask some of your guests to take part in a bake-off. Sweet or savoury, these guests can all compete to be the winner of the big-day bake-off. Ask everyone to vote or score their favourite bake, from quiches to cakes, and present the winner with a little prize at the end of the speeches. Yummy food (if you ask the right guests!) and entertainment your guests can get involved in – win, win! PUDDINGS Puddings have long been a staple in British cuisine, from suet and bread puddings to trifles and custard tarts. A sweet pudding would have been a sign of wealth in English history, with sugar being an expense not everyone could afford. Serve up a trio of miniature puddings for a grand wedding breakfast finale or set out a selection of puddings on a dessert station.

Inspired by the raw organic stone of The Old Hay Barn walls and gossamer-like autumnal hydrangeas, the styling for this photoshoot was a fusion of textures and muted tones, complementing and encapsulating the natural surroundings. A cloud of dried hydrangeas with white carnations hung above the tablescape, laid with artisanal ceramics, bamboo silk runners, taper candles in natural hues and crisp white florals in ceramic pots all interspersed amongst cut glassware. The gold and white cutlery added a touch of sophistication and a luxurious finish. The wedding stationery was crafted from poppyseed paper and stamped with wax seals, juxtaposing the contemporary frosted signage. Sculptural cakes oozed texture and echoed the intricate details of the hydrangea petals.

Hannah & David

‘‘We held a summer celebration in the capital city’’

W

hile the capital city isn’t home to either bride or groom, London did have a place in their hearts – we’ll let Hannah and David tell you why:

“I’d studied in the city for several months and David’s father was a Londoner, so he’d made regular visits. On our first date, London was our first topic of conversation, so it felt like the perfect fit. I loved the idea of a ceremony and afternoon tea in a historic chapel and then dinner in a pub, so we booked The Admiralty in Trafalgar Square.” “Getting married in the city meant each time we changed location, people congratulated us. It was touching and added to the celebratory feel of the day,” the bride smiles. “I was studying for a PHD at the time,” explains bride Hannah, “so we picked the summer break to get married so that our wedding and honeymoon wouldn’t be rushed. It also opened the doors to a destination wedding in London, as the weather would be better in summer, and we booked a cruise for our honeymoon to embark a few days after the big one. One of the great things about an overseas wedding is you’re not tied to a weekend wedding, your guests are already travelling, which meant our budget could go further on the venue.”

82

JUBILEE SPECIAL

On the day, 10 guests joined the couple, with another 500 logging in to watch the live stream! Bride Hannah waited for her mum’s next visit to her home in Dallas to begin the search to find her dream dress at Christmas. “The day after Christmas, we went out just the two of us to look for both of our dresses. I wanted to buy one that was off-the-peg, but I wasn’t set on a style or fabric. The gorgeous lace detailing, fitted silhouette and sweeping train gave me a 1940s vibe in the dress I chose and the seamstress added a bustle so I could pin up the train to make it easier to move around. No other dress fitted a London wedding so well.” Florist Joanne Truby styled the couple’s chapel venue with armfuls of blooms. “She created the atmosphere of an English garden with her floral pieces, it transformed St Etherlburga’s,” the bride reminisces. “The scent of the arrangements as I entered the venue on the day and saw David at the top of the aisle, just as Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’ swelled in the background, was an amazing moment.” The couple also loved the pieces they hired from Classic Crockery, they were exactly what they had wanted for the afternoon tea, which was served flawlessly by Fat Macy’s and Cake Me Up! “Hands down, our best decision was hiring Elisabetta, our wedding planner. She knew what she was doing and cared deeply about realising our dream. She found the best vendors to make our vision a reality. I couldn’t have done it without her!" WH

Leonora & Mark

‘‘ Our

I

perfect wedding weekend ’’

t was third time lucky for Leonora and Mark, who set the date for the third and final time for their dream Chilterns wedding. “We got married at St Mary the Virgin Church in Hambleden. It’s a medieval church in one of the prettiest villages in the Chilterns, and the very same church my parents had married in 30 years ago,” smiles Leonora.

Paying homage to family traditions, the bride even arrived in the very same 1927 Rolls Royce that had delivered her mum to her parents’ wedding ceremony all those years ago. Opera singers performed Andrea Bocelli at the couple’s ceremony. A huge archway of roses welcomed the couple and their guests to the church, with a sea of aptly named David Austin ‘Leonora’ roses filling the space with beauty and scent within. “I had to pinch myself,” Leonora reminisces. “My father then walked me down the aisle carefully trying not to step on the enormous train of my Suzanne Neville dress and metres-long veil. Our miniature dachshund Odie was even there, he was the ring bearer!” Leonora and Mark left the ceremony hand in hand on cloud nine,

88

JUBILEE SPECIAL

before relocating to their home in the Hambleden Valley, where their guests joined them to celebrate. “We had a beautiful marquee in the garden – it was like something out of a fairytale with thousands of roses. I’ll never forget it,” smiles the bride. Guests were treated to glasses of Champagne on the lawn as bagpipers played on from inside the marquee. A three-course meal followed with the speeches and then the couple cut their decadent five-tier cake. After marrying at their traditional church ceremony in a quintessentially English Suzanne Neville design, bride Leonora opted for a wardrobe change when it was time to hit the dance floor. “I changed into a custom-made Valentini Spose gown to dance the night away. We had a live band – The Sway Allstars Orchestra – and a DJ to supply the tunes.” The day after the wedding, the festivities continued, with the newlyweds welcoming 160 guests to their home for a garden party, complete with oysters, a roaming band and seafood paella. “We danced the night away all over again,” the couple grin. Emily & Rob

‘‘We said 'I do' in a room full of love’’

I

t’s fair to say Emily and Rob’s engagement was totally unique, but we’ll let the bride tell you why: “I decided to propose during a half-marathon,” reveals Emily. “I picked one of our favourite spots to run beside a fishing pool shaped like a love heart, and proposed with birthstone cufflinks for Rob.” This couple had initially planned a winter wedding – in fact, they’d planned one twice! But with two lockdowns hampering their plans, fate saw them tie the knot in May.

“It was gorgeous and we loved the history of our 12th-century venue. In fact, we’re both teachers and it felt serendipitous, as our ceremony room was actually used as a school classroom in the 16th century!” It seems three might just be the magic number for this couple, as bride Emily also fell for the third dress she tried on. “I adored the shape, the classic 1950s style. It fit me like a glove and even had pockets! Gemma at Stitched Up Warwickshire added a feature bow for me, as well as a blue ribbon underneath for my something blue,” Emily smiles.

94

JUBILEE SPECIAL

“We could only have 30 people present at the time, but that meant the room was full of love,” the couple reminisce. “My dad gave me away as a string quartet rendition of ‘You’re My Best Friend’ played, both our mums gave readings and it all just felt so right, so relaxed, so happy.” Two courses of mouth-watering buffet dishes treated guests at Rob and Emily’s reception. “Our caterers, NICuisine, were phenomenal,” they gush. “So many people commented on the food, they attended to every detail and went above and beyond to cater to all kinds of dietary requirements.” “The best decision we made was to splash out on our brilliant photographer. Having such gorgeous images to look back on is so worthwhile, and loved ones who couldn’t be at the wedding with us mentioned how the photos made them feel like they’d experienced it too in a way, because there are so many candid shots. Our photographers had the most fantastic energy, it really felt like friends joining us!” Emily and Rob had a sun-kissed honeymoon in Cornwall to look forward to after their intimate wedding. “We couldn’t wait to spend some time by the seaside,” they grin. Emma & Josh

‘‘ We had our first dance outside at sunset ’’

W

hile Emma and Josh gazed up at the stars one night in the outback of Australia, this groom found the perfect moment to propose. “It was so unexpected and the most amazing surprise,” Emma grins.

The couple opted to evoke a similar atmosphere back in the UK for their wedding at Coombe Lodge in Somerset, which they shared with their 80 wedding guests. “We chose a date in July because we loved the idea of a summer wedding with a long, warm evening and a beautiful sunset to watch. We were lucky to have the perfect weather for our outdoor ceremony.” Most brides might begin their dress search anything from a year or more before the big day, but circumstances dictated that Emma had only 12 weeks to find the perfect one. “We’d been in lockdown and I was starting to worry, so my mum and sister and I visited Liney’s Brides in Leicestershire and I showed the owner a few dresses I’d found and liked online. I was convinced I wanted something fishtail and fitted. I didn’t actually pick my dress off the rail, the owner Jenna did! She just knew it would be perfect – it was the first one I tried on and I bought it!” The bride’s bridesmaids joined her in stunning navy ‘Cecelia’ designs

98

from TH&TH Bridesmaids. “Josh had bought a velvet suit for our wedding, but about a week before realised it would be too hot for our summer date. So, right at the last minute, he purchased a black dinner suit instead, accessorised with a black bow-tie adorned with white spacemen from Mrs Bow Tie. The groomsmen all looked amazing.” To complement the couple’s black, white and navy theme, their florist worked with neutral tones of green and white. “I asked for peonies because I love them, and left the rest of the choice to the florist, who worked with some lovely seasonal favourites,” Emma explains. “Our confetti was amazing – it was made entirely from dried flower petals from the garden of my childhood home and my grandparents’ garden, too. My mum and her partner spent two years drying them for our big day.” Josh’s mum also turned her hand to the wedding preparations, baking the couple’s three tier cake. “We had lemon butter icing and it was absolutely delicious!”, they grin. Turning challenges into silver linings, the newlyweds shared a unique and magical setting for their first dance. “Because of restrictions at the time, we had our first dance outside, in front of the sunset. It was truly romantic as we danced to Tom Walker’s ‘Just You and I’. It’s a favourite of ours.” “Josh chose a band for the evening – we love how bands always seem to get people up and dancing. We’d loved the atmosphere a band created at a friend’s wedding and wanted live music.” WH

centre wedding location.

“I was so surprised (even though I really wanted it to happen!) that I forgot to say yes,” laughs Kaori. “But of course I did eventually!”

“We picked The Old Marylebone Town Hall for our ceremony because of how beautiful the building is, inside and out. Then we had dinner booked on the rooftop terrace at the Holmes Hotel – we only booked it a month before our wedding, because of coronavirus restrictions! The venue couldn’t have been more perfect and we were so fortunate to share it with a small, close group of family and friends.”

Like so many couples with 2020 celebrations on the cards, this couple’s original wedding date in March 2020 came and went, and they finally tied the knot the following May. “It gave us something to look forward to before the summer,” they smile. “I found 'the one' months before our original wedding date,” the bride smiles, “but little did I know that our winter wedding date would move to the spring! Luckily it was still a bit chilly in May so the dress was perfect for it.” A mid-length lace design with full-length sleeves and lace bodice detailing stole this bride’s heart and was the perfect choice for their city

104

JUBILEE SPECIAL

“Because it was an intimate wedding, Harry and I decided to get ready at home, but in different rooms, then surprise each other just before getting into our black cab that drove us the ceremony.”

“Standing in front of each other, saying our vows and promising to stand by each other forever – that was the most special part of the day for us,” the couple gush. Kaori and Harry were a match made in heaven for their reception venue. “We are huge fans of Italian food (who isn’t?!), and the Holmes Hotel have an Italian style. We indulged in a medley of starters, everyone was able to choose their own main dish, and we all tucked into tiramisu – our favourite dessert – to finish. It was perfect in every single way.” WH

The location was amazing and our guests could stay with us for a full wedding weekend. Because we were already legally married, we had more freedom with our plans, so our good friend acted as our celebrant in the most perfect spot looking out to sea.”

Chloe and Mike’s original wedding plans were brought to a surprising halt by the very first lockdown back in

“We had just five days to go until our big Somerset wedding with 120 guests, but realising this wouldn’t happen, we called the church and just 48 hours later we were arriving there, just the two of us, to officially become husband and wife.” The couple then rescheduled their planned wedding celebration not once, but twice, with both being cancelled by the lockdown rules. “By this time, we’d fallen out of love with the wedding we’d originally

It took only one dress boutique for this bride to find the one. “I visited Sassi Holford’s boutique in Taunton. I was really open minded and knew I wanted a dress I’d look back on in 10 years and have no regrets choosing. The girls there were amazing, I felt beautiful and I felt myself in my bespoke wedding dress.” Having planned both a big, traditional wedding and a more intimate wedding by the sea, the newlyweds have some words of wisdom: “Whatever you choose for your wedding, make sure you’re doing it your way. Stripping things back made us focus on what mattered to us.” WH

Vaiben & Kate

‘‘

Being announced husband and wife was magical!

A

fter Vaiben popped the question on an autumnal walk on Hampstead Heath, the couple took inspiration from a weekend away in the Cotswolds when it came to planning their wedding.

“We both love the Cotswolds and it’s fairly convenient from London. We’d stayed at Lords of the Manor before and had a wonderful time. We also loved that the local church was only a short stroll through the village. The church had great connections for us – it’s a beautiful and very special place,” Kate smiles.

“Vaiben and his father, who was his best man, wore custom morning suits from Oliver Brown in lightweight grey wool with family ties. Vaiben also wore gold cufflinks I gifted him for his birthday, and a vintage watch, which was my wedding gift to him,” Kate reveals. Complementing their traditional church ceremony, the couple kept their decoration classic with an English country theme, with fresh flowers and beautifully scented roses. “We went for pale pink, green and silver accents. One of my favourite details was the hand-painted Perrier Jouet Champagne flutes we had at each table setting – I collected them – and we had three magnums of their Belle Epoque Champagne that lasted the whole night!”

When the big day arrived, bride Kate was a bundle of nerves – but not for the reason you may expect.

But the star of the show wasn’t just the Champagne, as Kate had another gastronomic favourite:

“I was worried Vaiben would see me before I walked down the aisle. We were getting ready in next door rooms, so whenever a door opened I was worried he’d catch a glimpse. I needn’t have as he didn’t!” she laughs. “Once I put on my dress and veil, it really sunk in as I saw myself in the mirror that I was a bride. Then hearing the church bells start ringing – it was a very emotional moment.”

“The cake was one of my favourite elements of the wedding! Pia from The Vanilla Pod made us Madagascan vanilla tiers with rose buttercream and fresh raspberries, it was incredible - I’d always wanted a multi-tier, basket weave wedding cake with flowers between each tier. We’ve saved the top tier in our freezer for our first anniversary.”

Kate discovered her dream dress, a Galia Lahav design, at Browns Bride, and loved it for the romantic look it created.

ery bunny - that’s how bride Olivia would describe the moment James proposed: “I woke up on Christmas morning and heard James rustling about. He brought our house rabbit Lily in and she had a loose ribbon round her neck with the ring on it. I had to ask a few times if he was serious!” Olivia laughs.

Carving their own path and following their hearts, this couple didn’t opt for a purpose-designed wedding venue. Instead, they tied the knot in their village church and then held the celebrations for 55 guests in Olivia’s parent’s garden. “It was the perfect venue, the glorious big garden and a field for campers. We had a beautiful marquee from Godney Marquees and I just felt so relaxed being at home. We wanted an intimate wedding with our nearest and dearest. Our neighbour brought our dog to the ceremony and we had a really special moment walking back from the church down the country lane together. It was a moment to enjoy each other’s company after our emotional ceremony, and villagers waved us home from their doorsteps.” With lockdown rules lifting, Olivia was all set to find her dream dress with three months to go before the wedding.

“When I was younger, I used to drive past the Sassi Holford boutique on my way to school. There were always two gowns in the window and we’d pick our favourite. So to find my wedding dress there was wonderful,” Olivia smiles. She stunned in her bridal gown and Rainbow Club shoes, coupled with a delicate lace jacket for the ceremony. Her groom sported a sage green Moss Bros suit, perfect for their country wedding. “I’m vegan so it was important that I could eat everything at our wedding,” explains Olivia. “We wanted to show our guests how delicious a vegan menu could be, with a gorgeous spread in the centre of each table of salads, tarts, flat breads and more. Everything was decorated with edible flowers and our caterer was amazing!” For most couples, the photographer is the first vendor they book after setting the date and venue. It often even comes before the bride discovers her dream dress. Imagine the surprise for Olivia and James, when the photographer they’d originally booked could no longer make the day. “They’d been contacted by Track and Trace the week before our wedding. Fortunately we found our photographer Chloe Skidmore – she changed her plans to help capture our day. The pictures are perfect, we are so glad to have them to look back on. Chloe totally saved the day,” they grin. WH

Woodhill Hall offered all of that and

The couple invited 80 guests to share the ceremony with them, with another 40 joining them for the evening too. “I fell in love with the designer Jesus Peiro,” reveals bride Lucy. “We found a lovely wedding shop in Blagdon, Northumberland – Bridal Wish – who stocked them. They ordered my dress in for me and even changed some of the material, I loved it so much. My dress even had pockets!” Groom Scott looked equally stylish in a navy blue tailormade suit from Jules B. “Scott had the lining personalised with the skyline of New York in honour of where we got engaged. The groomsmen wore a slightly lighter navy, and they all had pale pink bowties.”

Decorating their wedding at Woodhill Hall, the couple kept the look classic and romantic with armfuls of candles and a pretty pastel palette. “I love natural, pastel flowers and especially peonies, but they weren’t in season. Our flowers were whimsical and so pretty! Our florist made the bouquets and table arrangements and my mother-in-law did a beautiful flower arch and wreaths for the doors,” smiles bride Lucy. The floral theme continued to the cake. Created by the Master Cakesmith, the couple paired it with a decadent dessert table to ensure guests were in for a treat. Lucy and Scott opened the dance floor to ‘Grow Old With Me’ by Tom Odell. “We love live bands, so we asked Last Anthem to play for us – they’re a local band and were great, they really got the crowd going.” When asked what the best decision they made was, the newlyweds had a clear answer: “Our family friend brought a lovely vintage car for us to go out and take a ride for 10 minutes – just the two of us – and reflect on our ceremony. Taking that time was so important, as the day goes so quickly!” After the wedding, the couple jetted off to Mauritius for a tropical honeymoon in the sun. WH

The couple tied the knot in the stunning setting of the Old Marylebone Town Hall.

Before long, the couple dove into planning their dream city wedding, with one rule making their guest list of 50 easy to define: “We wanted every guest at our wedding to be someone we both knew well and someone who would be in our lives 20 years from now,” the couple explain. ‘‘ By luck, we got married on the same day my grandparents did!’’

A

fter Jen and Joe met at Lancaster University 15 years ago, little did they know they’d be returning to this city to tie the knot one day.

“We knew as soon as we got engaged that Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park would be a really special wedding venue for us. We both love going back there to visit. Most couples have their ceremony at the Ashton then move on somewhere else for the reception, but we decided to have our reception there too.” “Finding a caterer who could create a three course meal in the grounds without running water was tricky, but luckily we found Ribble Valley Catering, who weren’t phased by anything!” “Our ceremony was really special. We’d waited so long, it felt amazing to be finally getting married. It felt surreal. I’m usually a crier and thought I’d cry during the ceremony, but I was weirdly calm and confident. My stepdad was very emotional walking me down the aisle and during his speech, when he mentioned the people we no longer have with us, including my dad,” the bride recalls. Jen looked stunning in her dress, ‘Alaina’, by Maggie Sottero for the big moment.

“My mum picked it out and I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I knew it had to be the one.” After the ceremony, the couple continued the festivities with their guests with dinner and dancing. “Our venue was set on a hill with great views of Lancashire, and the Butterfly House is beautiful too. All we added were flowers – it was all it needed. The soft glow of the lights at night worked really well with the lights our band brought. We just added some extra lights to the surrounding trees to light the way to the pizza van!” The groom was in charge of the wedding day soundtrack, choosing Indie Heads to fill the dance floor all night and a string trio during the ceremony and drinks reception. “We ended up having two first dance songs,” grins Jen. “Just before the band were due to play our first dance we still hadn’t made up our mind! We went for ‘Lover of the Light’ by Mumford and Sons and then a little while later, the band played our second choice, ‘Small Bones’ by the Courteneers, so we had a second first dance too!” “Deciding to have the whole of our wedding at Ashton Memorial meant sourcing all our suppliers ourselves. There are some great small businesses out there and it meant we could find the perfect people for us and didn’t have to settle for what we may not have liked. Getting a videographer was a brilliant choice, too!” WH

‘‘Our Medieval manour house venue brought tears to my eyes’’

I

knew from the beginning the kind of venue I was looking for,” reveals the bride, “we wanted an old English stone manor, or castle. Being from Norway myself, we don’t have this style of building at home, but I’ve always loved them. We looked at a few venues before finding Dartington Hall – walking through the main archway took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes! I knew this was where I wanted to get married.”

For most brides, the search to find their dream dress means beginning with your local boutique. But for bride Siri, who calls a town in Norway’s Arctic circle home, it was never going to be so simple. “I decided to fly down to Oslo with my mum and sister to give us the best chances and visit a boutique that carried my favourite designers. Across the room, I saw another bride trying on a design, and I loved it! After what felt like an eternity, it was my turn to try it on – the minute the zip was closed the emotion hit me. It was the dress of my dreams,” Siri gushes. With the groom’s family living in the UK and the bride’s in Norway,

their wedding day would be the first time many of them met. “We chose a venue in the South West of England to be close to my groom’s side of the family. Any concerns about language barriers melted away when our families and friends were together – everyone was chatting, dancing and having the most amazing time! It was a truly special moment for both of us,” the couple reminisce. This couple’s venue cooked up a storm, beginning with a three-course banquet with multiple options for each course. “We also added an ice cream cart loaded with toppings, as it was a summer wedding, and in the evening the venue prepared an enormous barbecue. I’d love to say it was out of this world (our guests certainly said so!) but we were so busy with guests, dancing and the photobooth that we hardly ate a bite!” “Professional toastmasters aren’t common in Norway, but I’m so glad we hired one,” Siri reveals. “He was amazing, greeting the guests, getting them into the right place at the right time, placing buttonholes, teaching us to saber champagne. He made everything run like clockwork!” WH
