e wanted to create a styled wedding with a periods aesthetic and after we had the idea, everything just fell into place. The house looks a bit like the Addams Family home, and I remember thinking at the time that it would make an incredible wedding venue and inspiring backdrop for a 1920’s themed shoot.

INSPIRED

The house had some of the same features as the property from Escape to the Chateau, recently purchased and newly renovated; with painted ceilings, gothic stone faces and arched windows. The dress is from Chloe Bridals, a local shop from Devlin Bridal Couture. The lovely embroidered and elaborate trail made it an obvious choice for this shoot. Our model, Jake, needed to match with a proper Peaky Blinders get up, a lovely tweed suit with a herringbone hat to finish - from Dyfed Menswear. My bouquet was really fantastic, just simple carnations and roses. The florist Julia Moore knew a lot about the authentic flowers and suggested we also use the long cream ribbons and attach the carnations to this, as they did in the 1920s. When Jim Johnson took the photos, he and the wedding stylist showed us a lot of real 1920 poses. All the best men and bridesmaids looked great, they really got into the part. Plus, we got an actual Ford Mark 1 to pose with, and you can’t get more 1920s than that.

n contrast to the girlishness of summer’s pinks and pastels we wanted to create a darker, moodier shoot to reflect the changing seasons. In the grand setting of Belair House – a Georgian mansion in Dulwich, Jennifer of Jennifer Pinder flowers and stylist Jade of On A Day Like This got together to concoct a rich elaborate banqueting table fit for Royalty. Aged urns spilled with seasonal chocolate cosmos, snapdragons, zinnia, and clematis – some foraged from Jennifer’s own garden.

Stuffed birds sat alongside tall candlesticks, quail’s eggs and berries. Engraved glasses, trinkets and decorative cutlery from Chic et Tra la la gave an eclectic and unique feel – all on a bed of bold blue silk by Pom Pom Blossom.

INSPIRED To add a personal touch, we hung a hand scribed romantic message in a Gothic frame by calligrapher Kayleigh Tarrant, who also created names places. An elegant marbled three tiered wedding cake courtesy of Sugared Saffron sat in a bed of foliage complete with little white mouse!

Floral stationary by Emily and Jo complimented all the autumnal hues, and old fashioned feel. In contrast to the organic intensity of our table setting, we chose braids and an understated elegant silk gown from Rock the Frock for our model Lili. Her flame red hair and alabaster skin something of pre-Raphaelite goddess, enhanced by the Smokey autumnal hues used by make-up artist Laura Naish.

Middleton Place Under the twinkling lights, surrounded by history and live oak trees dripping in Spanish moss, enchanting Middleton Place offers the perfect location for your Southern wedding...

A

National Landmark situated on the edge of Charleston, South Carolina, this 18th century preserved plantation known as Middleton Place is cultivated to suit the needs of every couple, offering unforgettable guest experiences in the process. In addition to the treasured gardens, the property boasts the delicate Cypress Room for intimate dinners, the stunning and spacious Pavilion and the Lake House and The Courtyard at the Inn at Middleton Place for larger gatherings. Whatever your idea of a fantasy wedding is, Middleton Place is more than willing to accommodate.

THE GARDENS

Wander like Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole and into the magical maze of hedges, azaleas and classical marble sculpture that make up the Gardens of Middleton Place. What Henry Middleton conceived in 1741, we can only begin to imagine as a wedding venue when we see the blushing bride drift down the aisle, birds and butterflies signaling her arrival. The gardens were inspired by the grand classic style of the 18th century European tradition and follow the principles of André Le Nôtre, the master of classical garden design who laid out the gardens at Vaux-leVicomte and the Palace of Versailles. Each carefully considered garden reflects a focus on rational order and geometry. Vistas, focal points, allées and changes in elevation create an overarching sense of harmony. Strolling through the oldest landscaped gardens in America beneath the drapery of Spanish moss, you feel a sense of complete tranquility, nostalgia and also, a true appreciation for beauty that has spanned centuries.

IDYLLIC SPACES

In addition to the Gardens, Middleton Place has a variety of beautifully built indoor spaces for the sole purpose of events. The Pavilion is one such arena and a new highlight of the grounds designed by architect Reggie Gibson in the shape of a “T.”

It includes a spacious kitchen, bathrooms, plenty of room for long tables and dancing with 13 foot high ceilings. Most impressive are the floor to ceiling windows that reveal the grounds of Middleton Place stretching forth as far as the eye can see, peppered with oak trees, lanterns and the old house and gardens in the distance. Rustic reclaimed light gray wooden panels envelop the space, imbuing the room with a peaceful, almost treehouse-like environment. Don’t forget to look up in the entryway at the contemporary abstract sculpture by local ironworker Robert Thomas inspired by an oak branch with dangling Spanish moss. Thomas also made the custom door handles for the doors of the Pavilion, which are constructed from the wood of an old oak tree that fell on the property. While the Pavilion is very contemporary, it blends surprisingly nicely with the historic setting.

THE RESTAURANT

All events held at Middleton Place are catered by the charming restaurant on-site, which serves scrumptious Southern favourites inspired by renowned former resident chef Edna Lewis. The restaurant building provides Gone with the Wind vibes as you enjoy your meal nestled beneath incredibly old oak trees and with a view of the Mill Pond and Azalea Hillside. All the ingredients served are collected from the on-site organic farm, so the menu changes frequently depending on what is seasonal. We love the Lowcountry ease of the lunch dishes, from traditional she-crab soup and shrimp and grits to braised collard greens and pulled BBQ pork. Dinner has all the delicacies of fine dining, but the ambiance remains casual so that after a day of exploring the Museum and grounds you can feel relaxed without having to don a tie. Feel good indulging in pecan pie or Huguenot torte (Charleston’s most famous dessert) with the knowledge that all proceeds from the restaurants support the mission of the Middleton Place Foundation. Gillian Ellis A heart to heart with the founder of Coastal Bride the premier wedding blog in the southeast united states

R

evered for time-honored traditions, stunning backdrops of historic churches or beaches and monogrammed everything, Southern weddings are a favourite of more and more couples looking to tie the knot. At a Southern wedding, you can expect guests’ attire to be bright and whimsical while the bride wears lace, pearls or a combination of both. There is a good chance there will be lemonade and mint juleps on tap and we can bet there will be at least one dish with shrimp, biscuits, barbeque or grits. A rain plan is a must in the South, but with any luck the skies will be blue and the sun shining on the big day….

“90% of weddings in Charleston are destination weddings with many people travelling down south for a sunny extravaganza.”

For all the rest of the preparations, expert Southern wedding blogger Gillian Ellis prepares couples with invaluable insight and over a decade of experience in the industry. Her five year-old blog, Coastal Bride is the preeminent source of bridal inspiration in the Southeast United States, brimming with ideas on wedding decor, bridal style, DIY’s and vendors in the Southeast. Coastal Bride’s aesthetic is light and appropriately seasidelooking, highlighting gorgeous real weddings and engagements. It functions as 50% submission-based, 50% produced by Ellis, meaning that she takes half of the photography she features and the rest is by other top photographers. In this way, Ellis is able to blend her passion for photography with her eye for design and content creation. Based in Charleston, South Carolina, Ellis travels throughout the Southeast for unique venues, wedding ideas and stories that make the heart melt. Born in New Delhi, Ellis spent her childhood traveling abroad in China, Russia and England as her father, a news photographer followed assignments. With a love for culture instilled early in her life, she was drawn to art and beautiful destinations that have influenced her work today. At university she majored in Art, then worked with top artists and curated shows for a large gallery in New York. While Ellis loved the art world, she soon realised that she preferred to work on the creative side rather than in management. She eventually moved to Charleston where she took an internship with a wedding photographer before starting her own business with her father. She believes Charleston to be the perfect place for weddings saying, “Charleston and other coastal cities in the South offer incredible guest experiences. We have beaches, the historic downtown and plantations, cobblestone streets and incredible restaurants. Charleston offers a lot for the wedding weekend, not just for the day.” According to Ellis, 90% of weddings in Charleston are destination with many people traveling down south for a sunny extravaganza. Like many in the blogging biz, Ellis’ brainchild began as a side project. She worked for eight years in her wedding photography business before deciding it was time to share her images as a form of inspiration for others. “I wanted couples to be influenced by really great work,” she explained. “Brides and grooms are first time buyers

INSPIRED and there is nothing worse than getting your photos back and having them not look the way you want them to.” For this reason, Ellis advocates doing your research before selecting your photographer, which involves not only looking at others’ weddings, but also meeting your potential choice in person. “Your wedding photographer will be with you more than anyone else in your wedding. When you look at their portfolio, pay close attention to their family photos and speeches because it’s very important that they are able to capture your emotions.” Coastal Bride is now a full-time, successful business recently nominated for a prestigious H+M Bloglovin’ Award in New York City. Over the years, it has collaborated with large companies from Lindt Chocolate to Plum Pretty Sugar, Progressive Insurance, World Market and Oriental Trading. Ellis’ work has appeared on The Weather Channel in the United States, Popsugar and Brit + Co. She is a founding member of Aisle Society, a website that features 30+ of the world’s top wedding blogs, amassing a readership of over 10 million. In her spare time, Ellis has also founded Charleston Blog Society, a group of lifestyle bloggers in Charleston who meet monthly to discuss the blogging industry, visit new businesses and take an Instagram-worthy photo (or five). She also does Family Photography (think all-white outfits on the beach at sunset). For inspiration of her own, Ellis’ looks to other bloggers as well as Pinterest, a favourite of many brides looking to save their ideas into organised categories. Wedding blogs Ellis frequents include Grey Likes Weddings, Bespoke Bride and Something Turquoise. For lifestyle advice and trends, she reads The Style Scribe and The Stripe. Some

of her favourite trends this year involve ceremony decor. “People are recently really into round flower arches at their ceremonies, which adds a nice frame to the couple when they stand in front of it,” she said. “I’ve also seen a lot of acrylic at weddings: on place-cards, chairs, signage, vases, etc.” When asked about wedding dress style, Ellis expressed that she thinks the Duchess of Sussex is the big influencer of the year. “Whereas there has been more lace in previous years, I think boatneck and simple gowns will come into fashion thanks to Meghan Markle.” Another trend she has seen are fun, bespoke themes for hen do’s. Ellis recently planned a mermaid-themed hen party in collaboration with Oriental Trading…. “Mermaids are really popular this year,” she explained. There were Message in a Bottle favors and handmade sea glass centerpieces with shells to add a beautiful and creative touch to the event. According to Ellis, one fun DIY that brides should consider are unique gifts to ask their friends to be bridesmaids. Coastal Bride’s most popular DIY ever was a handmade heart piñata that when opened, said, “Will you be my Bridesmaid?” These small, clever gifts show you really care and will be remembered always!

Courtney Hansen

INSPIRED

An exclusive inside look at Television Star Courntey Hansen’s dream wedding...

S

urrounded by their close friends and family in a beautiful olive garden, the happy couple Courtney Hansen and Jay Hartington said “I do” on 10 July 2018 in Taormina, Italy. Four days of festivities allowed the newlyweds and their guests to not only relax by the beach, but experience a taste of the Sicilian region during their extravagant destination wedding. As the couple dined and danced their way to the altar, the setting truly could not have been more romantic with backdrops of the rolling countryside, Ionian Sea and charming town complete with cobblestone paths and local well-wishers. The former host of popular television show Overhaulin’ on TLC, Courtney’s love of cars inspired a scenic ride in a vintage Fiat after the ceremony. The rest of the details evoked Italian traditions as well as details to match Courtney and Jay’s exact tastes. WE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHERE YOU TWO FIRST MET? I grew up in Minnesota, but moved to Naples, Florida to attend school. Jay is actually from Naples, but surprisingly we didn’t initially meet there. We met at a wedding in Napa in 2013 when I was newly single. It was really love at first sight…not only physical, but a spiritual connection as well. It was chemistry! After that, I asked around and it turned out that we had all the same friends. WHAT IS YOUR PROPOSAL STORY? Jay had planned to propose in New Orleans, but there was a hurricane which is why we went to Miami. I actually had to divert my flight plans from California to get there. He ended up proposing at the Soho House Miami where we had our first date. We celebrated with mimosas and I maybe had a shot of tequila because I love tequila! It was perfect.

“We chose to have a destination wedding because Jay and I both wanted to have a more intimate setting with about 150 of our closest friends and family.”

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU CHOSE A DESTINATION WEDDING, AND WHY TAORMINA? We chose to have a destination wedding because Jay and I both wanted to have a more intimate setting with about 150 of our closest friends and family. If we had planned our wedding in the States, it would have been ten times as big. We considered a lot of places and didn’t quite find one that worked until Taormina. Jay had been there before as he lived in Italy for a year, and when we finally went together, we both knew it was the place. Located on the coast of the Ionian Sea, Taormina is romantic, not very commercial and really charming. Many of our guests had never been there before, which was exciting for them. We really wanted an intimate vibe where everyone would be in one place and not spread out. WAS IT CHALLENGING TO PLAN FROM FAR AWAY? Honestly, it was difficult. I hired amazing wedding planners from Rome and did everything from pictures and research. In the end, we pulled it off and it was pretty much exactly as I had planned it.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT THE WEDDING ITSELF. COULD YOU SHARE THE DETAILS? Jay and I really wanted to give a taste of everything in the region, so we asked guests to come for four days to experience as much as possible and give them a holiday, too. Our home base was the gorgeous Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo. The first night, we hosted dinner at Ristorante Baronessa, a stunning rooftop restaurant overlooking the water that recently hosted the G7. They have the most incredible fresh fish and pasta dishes as well as a live pianist and a completely enchanting atmosphere. Our rehearsal dinner was an hour away from the hotel in Parco Statella. We made it come alive like Dolce and Gabbana in the countryside, arranging a really long gorgeous imperial table. It is a classic Italian tradition to do agriturismo dinners, and guests said that this dinner was a highlight of the trip. Our ceremony was in the garden of the hotel surrounded by olive trees. We had dinner and dancing there before taking a ride through the town in the Fiat. We then went to a club called Morgana to party the night away! The next day, we had a fresh, delicious brunch on the beach at La Plage. WHAT UNIQUE ELEMENTS OR DIY DETAILS DID YOU INCLUDE? I tried to get creative with every part of the process, so every detail was carefully designed to highlight local traditions as well as our own tastes. For example, we purchased some of the famous ceramic heads of Sicily and took photos of these to use as the overlay of the menu. We then tied these to the menu with beautiful ribbon. We incorporated a lot of Italian lace as well as fonts and colours that were indicative of the area. Another fun idea that we’d recommend is having local wine in the guests’ rooms with quotes about love and wine. The guests loved this! WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS FROM YOUR WEDDING? Without a doubt, my favourite moment was the ride through town after the ceremony. It was absolutely the most magical surreal moment. The car was beeping and everyone was waving and sharing their congratulations. YOUR SWEET DAUGHTER, HOLLAND WAS YOUR FLOWER GIRL. I’M SURE THAT WAS INCREDIBLY SPECIAL HAVING HER THERE. WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE THOUGHT OF THE BIG DAY? I think she was overwhelmed by it and that she was nervous to get to the end of the aisle. All along, Jay and I had told her that it was her wedding, too and just before the ceremony she looks down the aisle and says, “I don’t want to get married!” and dumps the rose petals. Prior to the ceremony, I also told Holland, “If you just do this and take these pictures and drop the rose petals, I will buy you any toy you want.” Halfway through the ceremony, she looks at us and yells, “I know what I want—Captain America!” It was too funny. BOTH OF YOUR WEDDING LOOKS WERE BEAUTIFUL AND I’D LOVE TO DISCUSS THEM! I’m very interested in fashion and I think I looked at literally every single wedding gown in the world. The only

dress that really resonated with me with this Marchesa gown that was so dolce vita, reflecting Italy and romance. I didn’t even have a second choice. It was romantic and perfect for an Italian garden. YOUR SECOND LOOK WAS A NAEEM KHAN JUMPSUIT, WHICH LOOKED ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ON YOU. WHY DID YOU GO WITH A JUMPSUIT? This is my favorite piece I’ve ever owned. It is drop dead off the charts. During dessert, I slipped away to put it on and it was absolutely unique and perfect for dancing. I’ll definitely wear it again, possibly for Jay’s mother’s birthday party and also on the red carpet. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES CREATING A DESTINATION WEDDING ON A BUDGET? I would say to always negotiate everything. Figure out the cost of buying things at home vs. the cost of buying overseas. For example, it was much less expensive to do menus in the United States and then carry them over with me. The lace and ribbons we also brought from the states because we got a good deal on them. Use the local elements where that makes more sense, like with the Italian wine. Get creative with the details! WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GIFT IDEAS FOR THE BRIDAL PARTY? I think useful gifts are always a great idea. My bridesmaids wore silver and rose gold and because I knew they would be walking a lot, I gave them silver and rose gold Havainas sandals to change into. IS THERE ANY OTHER ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO BRIDES? Three pieces of advice: First, eat! Eat, eat, eat, it’s so important to remember to eat and make sure you have some carbs and drink lots of water. Second, be in the moment. Really savour every moment and think, “Here I am in this magical dream.” Finally, stay with the groom as much as possible. Do not divide and conquer to talk to all the guests. Stay connected because ultimately this is your big day and you want to celebrate together. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

s a little girl, I spent my summers in a village on the coast of Croatia. I remember swimming with my cousins and running around barefoot all day in the sun. When we were choosing our wedding destination in Toronto, my heart just wasn’t full. One night, my husband asked me, ‘where is your favourite place in the world?’ Immediately, I remembered the summers of my childhood. Next thing I knew, we were in Croatia deciding on our venues! As our ferry approached Hvar Island, we saw a majestic old terrace under a large clock tower overlooking the island and sea. The rest was history!

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS

After many months of searching for the perfect dress, I decided to make my own. I reached out to a Montreal designer who met with me to create the most magnificent dress. It was light and flowy, lined with silk and simple details. I wanted something that represented simplicity and elegance, and it turned out perfectly! Overall, I ultimately wanted to look like myself. Often brides get carried away and lose themselves in the process, so I decided I wanted to keep my hair and make up light and simple. We worked with an incredible designer from Zagreb in Croatia, who added touches of our personality into the décor. From olive tree branches to golden vases, she created a whimsical yet sophisticated design. We were blessed to have the support of Suncani Hvar, as well as our designer. Our designer and florist had a vision and Suncani Hvar went out of their way to ensure every detail of their vision was perfected. From our welcome dinner to the big day itself, they executed with professionalism, and most importantly, with a smile. I couldn’t have been more grateful for their work. Our wedding was just perfect and all I had to do was show up!

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS

e were torn between a destination wedding and getting married in the Peak District nearer to home. In the end we decided Cyprus was the perfect choice. We love to travel and as Dan’s grandad was Cypriot, we thought it would be nice to get married somewhere we have a personal connection with. We wanted a really private ceremony and reception, so we were keen to find a private villa that we could rent as opposed to a hotel or public venue. We did some research online and visited Cyprus to see several venues, but fell in love with the views and the location of Eagles Cliff Villa as soon as we saw it. We knew it was right for us straight away. We allocated most of our budget to the food, the bar and the band, as these were the most important elements to us. Our main concern was keeping costs down for our guests. We were really aware that people were spending a lot of money to travel to Cyprus for the wedding, so we tried to take care of little things like transport to and from the wedding villa. We also had a free bar, so there were no extra costs for guests on the day. We originally thought we’d have around 30 guests, but there ended up being 70, which was amazing! I knew I wanted a really simple dress, but I struggled to find something that I liked in typical bridal stores. After trying on lots of different styles, I ended up having my dress custom made by a company in Derbyshire called Timeless Couture. It was great to be involved in the whole design process and have something made exactly as I wanted. On the day I chose to have natural makeup, mainly because I was worried about it all melting off in the sun! We were lucky to have an amazing hairdresser who managed to create just the style that I was after. The colour palette for the wedding was neutral. I chose cream for the bridesmaids’ dresses, and white and ivory for the flowers and décor. I added in some greenery with olive leaves in the bouquets and table decorations, and had the ceremony arch decorated with olive branches too, which looked very Grecian! The spectacular view from the villa was the main attraction so we didn’t want to distract from this too much with our decoration. We hung lots of white paper pompoms from the wooden pagoda on the entrance patio, had prints of our favourite quotes on a wall, and hung lanterns around the villa grounds — it looked stunning lit up at night.

Take inspiration from your destination, whether that is in the decoration or the food, for a truly authentic- themed wedding.

The main challenge when arranging a wedding abroad is not being able to talk to suppliers face to face! Koulla and the team at The Wedding Lounge were brilliant at making recommendations and helping us to source the suppliers, but it is still difficult to plan when you’ve only see your venue once. Our advice would be to keep it simple so there is less to organise. Also, trust your wedding planner and suppliers as they’re the experts and will usually know what works best for the venue!

Be sure to visit a few different venues before deciding on one for your destination wedding. Finding the right one is worth the hassle and means there will be no unexpected surprises on your big day. Plus it’s a great excuse for a pre-wedding holiday!

We wanted a place we could build new memories together as husband and wife.

Planning a dreamy destination wedding can be challenging, however for a truly authentic day brides can find inspiration from local sources - rather than importing - which creates a truly spectacular finish.

hile weddings are incredibly special and wonderful celebratory occasions, they are also innately stressful. The amount of energy and emotion that goes into this one single event that generally only lasts a day or a long weekend is incomparable to other milestones in life. We have had multiple first-hand experiences of some of the traditional politics involved, and given that we were planning and paying for this party ourselves, we wanted to do it our way. We decided early on that we wanted to keep this celebration intimate and chose to include only our immediate family and closest friends. With the people there that are already immersed in our day-to-day lives, it allowed us to bypass any catch up time and focus on relaxing and having fun. A few factors were involved when selecting the location. We wanted a place that we could build new memories together as husband and wife, somewhere we could go back to and celebrate anniversaries and enjoy future family vacations. We also wanted a special location that would overcome the cost and burden of travel for our guests. We chose Harbour Island because it is one of the most magical destinations on earth. On our first visit to the island, we fell in love with the pink sand and pristine ocean — we immediately knew that the Ocean View Club was our place. When planning, we knew we did not want to import flowers or have huge tablescapes. We wanted everything to be sourced from the island and to feel authentic, and in no way overdone. Our rehearsal dinner was covered in pink bougainvillea and our wedding in local greenery. With the island theme in mind, we decided to forgo shoes on our wedding day. We were getting married on the beach – why would we wear shoes? All of our guests followed suit and ‘checked’ their footwear prior to walking down to the beach for our ceremony. I will say, the ladies were very relieved that we made this decision! Looking back, we are both so grateful and feel so blessed. Everything went off without a hitch. There was so much love on the island that weekend and it was truly a dream come true.

BEAUTY

In her own words award winning bridal make up artist Tamara Tott talks us through the key make up trends for your winter fairy-tale.

W

ith over a decade’s experience in the makeup industry, I naturally progressed into the bridal industry around 5 years ago due to the high demand in my area.

What appealed to me about this specific part of the industry is the transformation my set of skills would have on the client. Making the client feel good about themselves is the highest pay I could ask for. The best weddings I have worked at have always been about the connection between me and the client. There have been times I have bonded so well with the clients, I didn’t want to leave after the job was done, these moments for me are the most memorable. Personally, I like to create looks which are effortless and romantic clean glowing skin highlighted with a subtle soft brown shadow washed over the eyelid, possibly brown or black liner smudged in the lash line, paired with a soft blush and finished with a light lipstick. Winter bridal looks can generally be a little heavier compared to summer looks. The sun goes down in the winter and most wedding celebrations are spent indoors with artificial light. Therefore, heavier makeup will register with this lighting better. For the more daring brides who are happier with a heavier look, bushy lashes and smokey eyes are very popular this A/W18 season. Natural glows, plump skin and healthy blush with a pop of berry or red lipstick are also trendy this season.

“For the more daring brides who are happier with a heavier look, bushy lashes and smokey eyes are very popular this A/W18 season. Natural glows, plump skin and healthy blush with a pop of berry or red lipstick are also trendy this season.” But for most bridal clients, the lips are a huge part of their overall look, and one of the biggest highlights in their bridal makeup. Mainly because of the kiss proof quality, and long wear throughout the day. Today there are different lipsticks on the market, which are waterproof and smudge proof. However, I never chase the lipstick

which will stay all day long. The reason why is despite their long wearing matte finish, these lipsticks can be very drying. It may be comfortable for an hour or two, but after it will dry out the lips. If my client prefers a matte finish, I would recommend Lime crime Velvetines or Anastasia Beverly Hills who have brilliant long-lasting lipsticks. Of course, if we are talking about a classic red pout, I use a liner, red eyeshadow and translucent powder to create a secure layer that will be kiss proof. One common hindrance for brides during the winter season is dry skin. Good skin goes hand in hand with healthy lifestyle choices, and for brides with dry skin I have a few suggestions before the big day which will give your skin that extra boost it needs: exfoliate twice a week with gentle exfoliators; use thick moisturisers such as Charlotte Tilbury Multi Miracle Glow or Egyptian Magic Crème; also include hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine; use Moisturising facial masks 2-3 times a week; and try essential oils on the face before bed time. All the above should improve the appearance of the skin prior to the wedding day. Don’t forget drinking plenty of water, eating omega enriched foods, exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol and having a good night’s sleep. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

“Start off by washing and conditioning your hair, and then rough dry it. Use a heat protecting spray and set your curling iron to 180 degrees. Alternate curling each section from front to back for a more natural look. After each section hold and cup the curl for a few seconds and let it go. For more volume back comb and tease the hair or for looser waves, brush the hair out gently.

2. TOUSLED TRESSES

“After curling each section from front to back, with your curling iron set to 180 degrees. Brush out the curls using a little bit of holding hair spray. Take 3-4 inch sections of the hair from both sides of the face and twist slightly on sides. Start to braid from slightly below the crown of the head down and secure with a small clear hairband. Stretch out the braid for a soft finish and use bobby pins to secure the braid. Insert hair accessories and hair spray lightly.”

3. CHIC CHIGNON STYLED TO PERFECTION

Brides can achieve the look of their dreams using these damage free extensions

“Apply heat-protecting spray and blow-dry the hair. Section you hair into 1-inch sections and curl with a curling wand. Pin up each curled section and allow it to set. Remove pins, starting from the nape of the neck area, leaving the crown, front and sides pinned. Back comb each loose section at the root and use a hair band to create a midway ponytail. Divide the ponytail into small sections, take each section and fold the loosely around the ponytail and secure with a bobby pin. Release the pin curls from crown, sides and front and repeat until all the sections are pinned into place securely. Style front loosely around the face.” WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

The experts at Smile Pod dentists have developed a specialised treatment to ensure that your teeth are gleaming white for you special day. The team of high trained dentists polish your teeth to a high gloss with a diamond polishing paste to restore your natural sparkle and whiteness, just in time for your big day.

How it works:

Using an ultrasonic scale remover, the tartar is removed from your teeth while the vibrating tip flushes out the excess bacteria. Next, a small hand scale is used to remove the small pieces of build-up that would have been missed during the ultrasonic treatments. This is followed by a stain-busting air flow for those stubborn stains and finally, the luxurious diamond polish paste is applied for a sparkling white smile!

Interview with

Ramon Monegal Ramon Monegal has been immersed in the process of creating scents his entire life. This year he debuts his long-awaited Ibiza Collection, inspired by the natural components of the Spanish city. Whilst also giving advice to our soon-to-be brides on achieving the perfect wedding fragrance...

ALTHOUGH YOUR FAMILY HAS ITS ROOTS IN PERFUMERY, YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER AS AN ARCHITECT. WHY DID YOU INITIALLY CHOOSE A DIFFERENT ROUTE? Ever since I was a child, I have loved architecture, its size and its aesthetics. I always loved drawing shapes of buildings and structures. However while I was studying architecture, I took advantage of my summers to learn the family trade; perfumery. I had a good teacher who taught me to channel my aesthetic sensibility into the creation of olfactory structures. I ultimately chose perfumery. The family, the successful history and my education, in which scents were always present, all played a part. Although, today a good architectural structure still excites me.

WHAT ABOUT IBIZA INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A COLLECTION EMBODYING IT? There is a long history between Ibiza, my youth and the sea. This is an idyll going back almost fifty years, which remains alive today, and that deserved an olfactory interpretation. I could not reduce it to a single scent, hence the collection. The perfumes are inspired by the three times of day. “Flower Power” is dawn, the yellow time, the apogee of the party. “La Isla Blanca” is midday, the light time. It’s the salt on the skin after bathing in the oceans and the hypnotic seduction of the island architecture. Lastly, “Café del Mar” is the blue time, the relaxation of the sunset.

YOU TEND TO USE MUCH MORE UNIQUE AND ECLECTIC NOTES IN THE THREE SCENTS. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH COMPONENTS TO COMBINE? Modern perfumery is the combination of great classic ingredients with new molecules. The proportions, the structures and the names change; but the language of smell, its meaning and messages do not. The components are not chosen on a whim or just because I more or less like them. I choose them for their values regardless of whether the molecular structure may be more or less complex. The script of every story is what defines the universe of ingredients I can play with.

BEAUTY IN WHICH WAYS DO YOU THINK COUPLES CAN INCORPORATE PERFUMES INTO THEIR WEDDINGS AND WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT? It is one of the most important moments of your life. Perhaps one of the most emotional! Smell, like a photographic image, has the power to make you relive those special moments, that’s why I always advise enriching a good time with a special scent to be remembered. They can be used at a personal, face-to-face level, as a gift, or just for atmosphere.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR RAMON MONEGAL? DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW SCENTS THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON? I already feel like I can’t stop, my inkwell is full of new stories to tell. I am working on new artistic values from my culture and some legends from the past that allows me greater freedom of interpretation. Each end represents a new beginning! [ramonmonegal.com]

“Smell, like a photographic image, has the power to make you relive those special moments.”

For example, I transmit the energy of the sea with molecules of marine aldehydes and the soothing essence of lavender. The essence of the allembracing sunset is embodied with vanilla, the seduction of nitrate on the skin with musk and tonka; and the provocation of freedom with patchouli.

WHAT SHOULD BRIDES LOOK FOR IN A WEDDING SCENT? Ensure it communicates the values of relationship and the significance of the celebration. Certain scents induce different emotions; it is best to choose based on what you want others to receive. To evoke feelings of romance and joy, I recommend notes of iris, muguet and orange blossom. For a more daring and seductive aroma, patchouli, jasmine and are delightful components. Finding the right ingredients to create the ideal blend is essential to communicate the right message. Aesthetics are very important, but communication is much more so!

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO BRIDES TO ENSURE THAT THEIR SCENT REMAINS THROUGHOUT THE DAY? Perfume the skin just before getting dressed, so that the scent of the perfume passes from the skin to the dress. Don’t perfume clothing. Discreetly perfume the hair at the back. If necessary, re-apply the perfume during intermissions, more delicately. It’s better if you can reinforce the same perfume in an oil or cream.

Romance in Niagara Falls Once crowned the ‘Honeymoon Capital of the World’, and still one of Canada’s most beloved wedding destinations, Niagara Falls, is synonymous with romance. Claire Bloomfield travelled to the world-famous natural wonder in Ontario to find out more… Words by Claire Bloomfield

L

ocated on the border between Canada and the USA, Niagara Parks extends for approximately 35 miles along the length of the Niagara River, from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.

Easily accessible from Toronto Pearson International Airport, with a shuttle service also available and only a two-hour train journey from Toronto’s Union Station, reaching this natural spectacle couldn’t be simpler. Drawn by the hypnotic mist and the thunderous force of 150,000 gallons of water crashing down into the lower Niagara River every second, you will see wide eyes and huge smiles for miles as you explore the Parks. This awe-inspiring location has attracted honeymooners ever since Napoleon’s younger brother Jérôme Bonaparte brought his American bride here back in 1804. Nowadays, the city of Niagara Falls plays host to more than 50,000 honeymooning couples a year – and you will even be handed a certificate signed by the Niagara Falls Mayor, in keeping with a tradition that has been running since the 1960’s.

A Catamaran for Two

The roaring Niagara River drops an average of 57 metres over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls; it’s difficult to appreciate the scale of the falls until you are nearly under them. The 20-minute Hornblower Niagara Cruise experience is your chance to get up close and personal and absolutely soaked (despite wearing a plastic poncho) – by the Falls’ iconic mist. The state-of-the-art catamaran boats take you on an unforgettable awe-inspiring 20-minute journey. A surprisingly emotional experience, it’s no wonder thousands have been attracted for more than 170 years.

86

DWHA || NOVEMBER / DECEMBER

With or without your recyclable poncho, you can even host your ceremony aboard a smaller vessel surrounded by your family and friends. Cruising around the Niagara Gorge, pass the American and Bridal Veil Falls before approaching the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, here you will share your first kiss as husband and wife under the sparkling waterfall. (www.niagaracruises.com)

DESTINATIONS

The Journey Behind the Falls attraction sees visitors descend 150 ft. by elevator into 130-year-old tunnels through the bedrock that lead you to two outdoor observation decks located directly behind the Falls. You will get a true sense of the sheer power and thunderous vibrations – and depending on how close you’re willing to go, you’ll get wet here, too. As the sun goes down, Niagara Falls is just as beautiful. Every evening just before dusk, Niagara Falls is transformed through multi-coloured illuminations – and it’s just one of the many reasons to extend your visit to Niagara Parks beyond a day trip.

Tie the Knot:

DESTINATIONS

Ever wondered whether it’s possible to say ‘I Do’ with the Falls as your picture perfect backdrop? The answer is yes - and it’s surprising the number of unique locations on offer for your ceremony. There are no less than seven elegant sites to say your vows at Niagara Parks; from a floral fantasy in the Showhouse, to being surrounded by over 2,000 tropical butterflies in the Butterfly Conservatory, or even in the quaint Queenston chapel built in 1934 and brimming with traditional Canadian style. Oakes Garden Theatre, a carefully restored curved pergola overlooking a central amphitheatre in Greco-Roman style, complete with sweeping views of the Falls, is a popular choice in Queen Victoria Park. Surrounded by lush lawns, lily ponds and colourful formal gardens, this enchanting outdoor location is ideal for those couples that have a small and intimate ceremony in mind. Rambler’s rest, a stone heritage pavilion on the river’s edge uses the aptly-named Bridal Veil Falls in an unparalleled backdrop. This charming venue can host up to 15 guests. Offering world-class cuisine and bespoke menus crafted with local produce, Niagara Parks’ award-winning restaurants can provide full exclusivity for large groups, patio terrace experiences and banquet rooms. But the soon to be renovated glass-walled dining room at Elements, with its extraordinary views across the Horseshoe Falls, gets our vote.

Food for thought Famous for their delicious comfort food and hearty dishes, Canadian Cuisine is ideal for food lovers and connoisseurs alike. Few dishes have made it across the pond, but the delectable creation Poutine has broken through the barriers. A dish composed of crispy fries, drenched in rich gravy and topped with cheese curds and various meats such as pulled pork and bacon, is the perfect comfort food. Seafood also plays an essential role in Canada’s culinary delights and no trip to the friendly nation is complete without indulging in a Lobster roll, usually garnished with herbs and spices and served with fries. For dessert the Butter Tarts are a simple but delicious option. Made of flaky pastry shells filled with butter, sugar and egg filling this is traditional Canadian food at its best.

Did you know? Formed at the end of the last ice age, Niagara Falls has moved back around seven miles in 12,500 years and may even be the fastest moving waterfalls in the world. For more information and to plan your trip visit: www.explore-canada.co.uk and www.niagaraparks.com

DESTINATIONS

Our Top 3 Tips:

1.

Make time for a visit to Niagara on the Lake. Nestled in the corner of the Niagara region and less than a 30-minute drive beyond Niagara Falls, this picturesque town is often described as the prettiest town in Ontario. It’s a well-preserved 19th-century village and is considered the heart of Ontario Wine Country. Whether you choose to stroll through the historic Old Town, or cycle through the magnificent vineyards, Niagara on the Lake is a must-see.

2.

If you’re eager to see both sides of the Falls, don’t try to drive across. Walking across the Rainbow Bridge will not only save you a lot of time stuck in traffic, but it will give you a chance to soak up some amazing views. Best of all, walking across is free to pedestrians; just make sure you bring your passport as you’ll be going through customs.

3.

Be prepared to get wet. Even on the sunniest days mist from the Falls can blow your way if the wind is strong, so dress appropriately. Plastic ponchos are provided at the various attractions throughout Niagara Parks, however, you’re still likely to look like you’ve just stepped out of the shower after disembarking a Hornblower Cruise.

Food for thought Modern Antigua is now a culinary destination because of the world-renowned seafood and rum. Saltfish and fungi is the national Antiguan dish. Fungi (pronounced foon-jee), is an Antiguan version of polenta which is made by forming a cornmeal and okra paste into balls. Saltfish is dried, flaked into pieces and served with vegetables, boiled egg, plantain and fungi as a typical breakfast dish. The mild polenta flavour contrasts perfectly with the strong-flavoured salt fish. On the side, Johnny cakes, a subtly sweet fried bread, compliment the dish as Caribbean pancakes. Saltfish and fungi is traditionally eaten at home on weekends, especially post-church on Sundays.

Food for thought New Zealand is home to a countless number of different cuisines; but one meal that stands out from any other is Hangi. Hangi is the national food for the Kiwis. The meal is so well known due to the tiresome work that goes into making the dish. Hangi’s main ingredients are chicken and colourful vegetables cooked in an underground oven. Today, it is usually only eaten on special occasions due to the complexity and duration of time it takes to prepare such a delicacy. Seafood, such as Paua, whitebait, Kina and crayfish are also much favoured Kiwi delicacies, and a popular favourite amongst tourists.

Your very own Kiwi bouquet A very popular floral choice for the people of new Zealand are Lupins. These unusual plants grow in an abundance of colours, so they can be picked for your colour theme at the wedding! The majority of Lupins are a soft purple with glimmers of apricot-orange throughout, making it the perfect bouquet for a fun, colourful wedding. In history, Kiwi brides would often carry bouquets of herbs and spices such as garlic, which was thought to ward away any spirits. Once blossoms were introduced, each one had an individual symbol. For example, lilies were thought to display purity. Now, brides are much more free to create a beautiful bouquet to match their own style.

Food for thought Nothing seems more quintessentially American than the definitive hamburger! Born out of a beef obsession amidst the commoditisation of farming in the 1950s, eating burgers has become a favourite national pastime, and they take the prime spot on any menu in California. There is a lot more variety than you think, from thin griddled beef styles to stacks of thick gourmet patties, and that’s not to mention the diverse tangy toppings, melted cheese and crunchy salad fillings. Fall in Love with the Loire Valley From mystical ancient woodlands and gastronomic delights, to glittering aristocratic palaces, Emily Williams discovers the Loire Valley as a scene for a fairy tale wedding or a memorable minimoon retreat Words by Emily Williams

I

n this vale of timeless rural beauty, pass pastures of uplifting yellow sunflowers, find fragrant fields of lavender, and meander through meadows that burst with colourful wildflowers. Just an hour and twenty-minute flight from London to Tours airport, or a short train ride directly from Paris, and you will soon be entering a UNESCO World Heritage Site hidden in the heart of the French countryside. Tipped as one of the most desirable places to visit outside Paris, lodging in the Loire Valley is a truly unique experience.

A Scenic Bike Ride

Exploring the Loire Valley is effortless by rental bike, whether you would like to follow a trail or leisurely tour with no planned route. For a memorable afternoon, pack a picnic or purchase freshly baked goods from a boulangerie along the way. A wholesome afternoon feast will be even more worth it after a few hours of pedalling through winding country lanes and gentle rolling hills. From your bike, explore France’s bucolic bliss - pass quaint provincial towns composed of timeworn cottages and characterful vegetable allotments, and onto vast lazy leas of grazing cattle.

The Enchanted Forest

Thirty kilometres south east of La Mans, the mystical white oak Bercé forest is a national treasure. Declared as an ‘Exceptional Forest’ by the French Government, it has become an established symbol of cultural and environmental richness. It was historically a Royal forest, providing timber for navy boats under the instruction of the Sun King’s minister. It is now carefully preserved as an abundant sanctuary for 65 different bird species and thousands of ancient white oak and conifer trees. Hike past trickling streams, forage for wild mushrooms, picnic in secret dappled glades, or horse ride along the earthy discovery trails. It would be the perfect activity for your guests post-wedding day.

Need for Speed

DESTINATIONS

The Loire Valley is illustrious for its highly attended car race that has taken place annually in the month of June since 1923. 24 Hours of La Mans attracts mechanical enthusiasts and speed fanatics from all corners of the globe. Acclaimed as the world’s oldest and greatest sports car endurance race, watch the vehicles zoom round the tracks at up to 250 miles per hour by day, night, rain or shine. If you are not in the region when the spectacular event takes place, there is an informative museum dedicated to it nearby.

A Taste of the Valley

Given the exceptional growing conditions for grapes, there is a wonderful diversity of wineries speckled across the region, producing local to internationally exported labels. For the most authentic experience, I would recommend arranging a day tour to a couple of family-run estates. Located centrally in the Loire Valley at Domaine de Cézin in Marçon, the Fresneau family have been making top-notch wines on their estate for four generations. Away from the tourist hotspots, at this rustic winery you may find that the whole vineyard will be yours to roam in private. Explore the naturally chilled cellars filled from end-to-end with age-old barrels and musty carafes. The oldest bottles date back centuries and are covered in a mould that cools, preserves and matures the alcohol’s structure. After an informative lesson on how to smell and taste the wine complemented by crusty bread and a divine local goats cheese, enjoy a summer’s day picnic for two, with a glass of a regional Sancerre or Fresneau’s light and aromatic Coteaux du Loir Rosé (fresneau.fr).

Where To Stay: Château Du Grand-Lucé

Reopening in 2019 as a luxurious hotel and event venue, this sublime summer palace breathes neoclassical opulence and splendour. Uniquely located in the heart of a humble French village with an 11th Century church, the ornate gates open to reveal a pearlescent-faced symmetrical mansion quarried from the finest local limestone. On the site of a former ancestral castle, and originally owned by Baron Jacques Pineau De Viennay, its impressive avant-garde beauty crowns it as a prime example of ‘je ne sais qoi’. It is no wonder why the residence has become a darling of the fashion world – it was the chosen setting for a haute couture Louis Vuitton campaign. As you can imagine, the wedding day photograph opportunities here are endless; from inside the residence where the light streams in through its doll’s house windows, to photo shoots amongst its eighty acres that span over an enchanting lake and an ancient white oak forest. Replicas of the statues at Versailles gifted from King Louis XV scatter the palatial grounds and extravagant chandeliers dangle from the trees. Château Du Grand-Lucé would make a magical fairy tale backdrop for your nuptial celebrations. ‘Lucé’, meaning light, points to the property’s position as a beacon of iconic 18th Century architecture, as well as its association with the key influential thinkers, writers and nobles who resided at the château during the Age of Enlightenment. History breathes through the building, and during World War II, the residence was transformed into a hospital serving wounded British Officers. During this time, treasured paintings from the Louvre were stowed away beneath the ballroom stage! After years of careful restoration, the property is reopening to transport you to a bygone era of romance. Each of the seventeen rooms are exquisitely preserved in classical French fashion; decorated with plush sofas, antique ornaments and lavish freestanding bathtubs in the spacious en suites. The Baron’s suite would be ideal for the newly wed couple, and its adjoining Salon Chinois is lined with murals composed by Jean Baptiste Pillement, the court painter to MarieAntoinette. Although the residence is large, it has a homely boutique feel, and guests still experience all the modern luxury comforts with its new deluxe fitness suite, and a former water fountain that has been transformed into an elegant swimming pool. The on site spa would be perfect for bridal party preparations or a last minute soothing massage before the big day ahead (chateaugrandluce.com).

Food for thought To experience the ‘joie du vivre’, meaning the simple pleasures of the French way of life, no trip to the Loire Valley would be complete without tasting the authentic cuisine. Discover the regional delights of delicate freshwater fish in creamy beurre blanc sauces, to flavoursome pâté-like rillettes. Goat’s cheese is a real delicacy in this region, and the artisan Sainte-Maure variety is a creamy, blue ash coated sensation to incorporate in any meal. As for dessert, Tarte Tatin is a firm favourite. In Loire’s most northern city of Orleans, the Tatin sisters famously cooked French apple tart on a stove as their restaurant lacked an oven. To stop the pastry burning, they flipped the tart with the apples at the base and voilà, the Tarte Tatin was first created!

Local Loire Valley Bouquet Blooms with a chic nonchalant feel form the basis of most French bouquets. Traditionally hand tied with ribbon or raffia, they have an undone and effortless appearance. Whilst the Iris is the national flower of France and has symbolised its monarchy since the 13th Century, the Lily of the Valley has become an icon of French culture. The Fête De Travail, or Labour Day, is an annual bank holiday on the 1st May that also signifies the birth of Spring. Lily of the Valley flowers are exchanged between loved ones as a token of happiness, prosperity and future harvests.

Named after King Charles II, Charleston (originally Charles Town) was established in 1670 as a vibrant port in the Carolina colony and used as a base for colonial expansion. In its tumultuous early days, it was attacked by the French, Spanish and notorious pirates like Blackbeard. It rose into a prosperous hub of the Atlantic trade and grew to power through the sweat of its residents, from wealthy proprietors to African slaves. What we see in Charleston today is a multicultural fusion that has it consistently named as one of the top cities to visit in the world.

Worth a Wander

I love walking around a new city, seeing everything at eye level and making first impressions. In Charleston, a morning mosey down King Street to Broad Street gives you a good sense of where many of the restaurants and shops are located, which you will be visiting throughout your trip. There are stores to meet everyone’s tastes on King, and some of the local standouts include interior design store Ro Sham Beaux, women’s clothing store Hampden and men’s clothing store, M. Du-mas & Sons. If you’re up for making your own unique souvenir, a candle-making class at Candlefish is a fun experience for crafty visitors. From there, stroll down to the Charleston His-toric Market, about a five minute walk away. Explore local crafts, sample freshly made Southern sweets like pralines and benne wafers and watch as Gullah descendants weave Sweetgrass baskets on the street, a cherished tradition.

Steeped in History

If your hotel offers bicycles, opt for cycling to the famous colourful houses known as Rainbow Row and on to The Battery at the bottom of the peninsula. Here, you will ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at the view of the harbor as well as the architecture of the historic antebellum mansions lining the park. I would highly recommend taking a guided tour of one of these palatial mansion houses, like the Nathaniel Russell House. Climb its incredible three-story spiral cantilevered staircase as you explore the elite 19th century home of wealthy Charlestonian Nathaniel Russell. The formal gardens and 18th century art exude opulence as well as English tradition, which has remained long after the Revolution. If your feet are tired, hop aboard a scenic carriage tour through the French Quarter. A knowledgeable guide will point to places of interest from the Old Exchange, where President George Washington once gave a speech, to streets in which scenes from The Notebook were filmed. You will see many homes facing to the side, an architectural nuance as customary and quirky as the numbering of houses in Charleston, which often go up in increments of halves. Follow snaking wrought iron gates that wind through the city like ivy, designed by a Charleston legend, the artist Philip Simmons.

Southern Sun and Sky Blue Water

You should not make a trip to Charleston without spending at least one day luxuriating at one of the three popular beaches in the area. There is no better cure for the soul than a day spent reading a book in a lounge chair at Sullivan’s Island. For lunch, grab a burger at Poe’s Tavern, named after Edgar Allan Poe, who spent a year in the Army at Fort Moultrie. For an upscale dinner, opt for The Obstinate Daughter, which prides itself on tasty seafood and eclectic pasta dishes made from local ingredients. As if sitting by the water isn’t enough, you can also take in the views of the skyline and the glorious Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge, the longest cable-stay bridge in North America with a sail around Charleston

harbor. Bring a light packed lunch and enjoy whizzing around without a care in the world, sighting dolphins and maybe even catching a fish or two. Aqua Safaris is a great rental place for power yachts, sailboats and fishing vessels, and their experienced guides can point out all the historic sights from the sea. (aqua-safaris.com)

Inclined to Artistry

It is not difficult to imagine that such a beautiful place has inspired countless paintings by artists (as well as plenty of Instagram fodder from the rest of us). A visit to Charleston is not complete with-out viewing some of the local artwork, though considering that it has made its way into hotels, res-taurants and shops, this is not terribly difficult. For a more concentrated approach, visit the newly renovated and stunning Gibbes Museum of Art, where you will learn about the most important families and moments that made Charleston what it is today. Broad Street, also called Gallery Row is lined with art galleries where you just might find a Low-country work to take home. From contemporary portraits to lush landscapes of fishermen, there is certainly art for every palate (or palette). End your artistic affair at the hip art-themed Vendue Hotel, where works from artists across the Lowcountry have been curated on exposed brick. Head up the small elevator to the rooftop bar for the best views in town.

Comforting Cuisine

As you have a very active itinerary, it is probably best to keep things light for lunch. Head to East Bay Street for 167 Raw, a cozy little restaurant that packs a punch with freshness and flavour. Mix up your order with a variety of oysters, clams and shrimp and if you really want to make your taste buds sing, order the lobster roll as your main. The fun setting with friendly waiters is divine. Add a glass of rosĂŠ and the day is made! WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

After a long day of exploring, you will find that traditional Southern foods like shrimp and grits, fry baskets of fish, and hush puppies at The Darling really hit the spot for dinner. Or, if you are craving a more adventurous finish to the day, try McCrady’s, where you will embark on a culinary journey through 16 to 18 tasting courses over two hours. Foodies rejoice: these and many of the other restaurants in Charleston boast farm-to-table menus.

Wedding Bells

Charleston is nothing if not romantic. It is impossible to avoid a sense of giddiness as the sun sets over the Battery, its creamsicle and rose colored shades drizzling over the water like a sticky icelolly. Everywhere you turn in Charleston, couples stroll hand-inhand; it is simply too beautiful not to inspire a bit of amour. For this reason, nearly every street block has hosted a wedding at one point or another, from over 400 places of worship to intimate manicured gardens tucked behind tall hedges. If you travel just a bit outside Charleston, you will find historic rice plantations that serve as stun-ning event venues. One such magical plantation is Middleton Place, established in the 18th century by the Middleton family. With National Historic Landmark status, the preserved rice plantation is now frequented by visitors and cherished for its impeccable English-style sculpture gardens, famed ornamental lakes in the shape of butterfly wings and tasty restaurant that caters to all the weddings at the property.

Where to Stay Wentworth Mansion

You have seen the Second Empire style mansions around town and now it is time to stay in one. Once a family home, the ornate Wentworth Mansion has passed hands from the Scottish Rite Masons to an insurance company and finally, to Richard Widman who had it fully restored and turned into a luxury hotel with inlaid floors and Tiffany glass. With whirlpool tubs, a rooftop cupola and couples massages, Wentworth Mansion is perfect for newlyweds.

The Spectator

If you are a Fitzgerald fan, we’d recommend staying at the The Spectator, where butlers rather than bellhops escort you into the Roaring Twenties. This delightful hotel in the heart of the city comes complete with Art Deco fixtures, gilded mirrors, and a fully stocked bar because fortunately Prohibition is no longer a thing. I love the Sally King Benedict painting in the lobby as well as the rest of the artwork, courtesy of the Charleston Artist Collective. Every detail of the interior decor has been mindfully curated and the overall feel is one of contemporary luxury.

Food for thought A hub of all things southern, Charleston fare is ideal for cuisine connoisseurs. Seafood plays an integral part in the traditional dishes, with most meals being laden with oysters, clams and shrimp. Once particular favourite is Shrimp and grits. The deliciously seasoned seafood is served with soft and buttery grits. Reminiscent of oats or porridge, grits are made of corn that is ground into a coarse meal and boiled. Baskets of fried fish, cornbread and deep-fried cornmeal also known as hush puppies are tasty snacks that are traditionally served alongside main meals. A trip to Charleston is not complete without, enjoying some famous Charleston red rice. Similar to Jambalaya, the red rice is cooked with a myriad of spices, giving it the famous red tinge and if served with hearty Andouille sausage and occasionally seafood.
