n 2019, the average cost of a U.S. wedding was $33,900. And, what’s more interesting, is that the average initial budget couples have to spend is $23,000—meaning, couples exceeded their budgets by well over $10,000. If you dig even deeper, you will find that the wedding venue is, without doubt, the biggest expense. Without question, Blame Her Ranch is ‘one of those’ expensive destination venues. But the devil is in the details and if a couple is smart, they can get the wedding of their dreams by following some of the offerings Blame Her Ranch provides couples:
BIO Linda is the owner of Blame Her Ranch which was built under her direction and design in 2007. In 2017, Linda and her husband Steve began marketing the ranch as an independent Airbnblike location. After her daughter’s wedding, many vendors approached the Blamer’s to host weddings at their ranch based on its beauty, uniqueness, and location. And, that’s how it all started...
AIRBNB-LIKE VS RESORT:
Private homes, ranches, and farms that are dedicated to the wedding industry on average will save you money. Some include lodging, like Blame Her Ranch, and offer multiple venues for the welcome dinner, rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception. More importantly, Blame Her Ranch, and other venues like it, eliminate the ‘package deal,’ giving couples enormous flexibility on bar service, lodging, and catering.

INDEPENDENT CATERERS:
Everything, from food trucks to 5-star services, is better hired independently than going with a standard menu offered at most resorts. This enormous flexibility allows you to cherry-pick exactly what you want—from linens to dinnerware— to food items—across every spectrum. Don’t get forced into limitations and package deals! Independent caterers also give you more elements of personalization, which make your food choices special to you!
LODGING:
The wedding party or immediate family needs a place to stay at a destination wedding. Some of the couples who book at Blame Her Ranch offer free lodging, for up to 32 of their overnight guests. We have also established an innovative invoicing program through PayPal that allows couples to charge individuals for their room and stay at Blame Her Ranch. This reduces the overall lodging costs significantly for the couple. This is a unique program for our ranch but could be offered by any venue a couple might choose.

BAR SERVICE:
This is where most venues get you and your pocketbook. Many venues, both resorts and private, as well as, exclusive homes, insist you use their bar service for your wedding. At Blame Her Ranch, we believe this practice is unfair and unnecessary. The couple can simply buy their alcohol and beverages at local warehouse-like stores and then hire licensed bartenders to serve appropriate beverages given state regulations.
UNLIMITED TIME:
Most facilities have cut-off times. Some of them are quite early—like 10:00 p.m. and don’t allow you to start setting up until an hour before the actual ceremony. While it is not a true dollar saving, you need to get the most amount of time for the price you are paying. It’s a “dollarvalue proposition.” At BHR, we have no cut-off times so you can party until 3:00 in the morning. But to be fair, we are very private and remote, which is a great advantage we offer our guests. Bottom-line, ask for the number of hours you will get for your actual wedding time and determine the dollar rate per hour you would pay from one location to the other. Unfortunately, many will nickel and dime you to death and limit your wedding experience to force you into their playbook vs, what you want. Not to mention, the tremendous kickback schemes some venues have when they limit your choice of vendors to their approved list (something we fundamentally do not believe in at BHR). The BHR motto is simple: Get more fiesta for less dinero.

ENGLAND From the 17th of May, weddings can take place with up to 30 people in approved Covid-19 outdoor or indoor venues.
WALES Weddings can take place only in approved venues. The maximum number of attendees is regulated by the venue’s capacity. Since the 26th of April, outdoor receptions with a total of 30 people are permitted.

SCOTLAND Since the 26th of April, up to 50 people can attend weddings. Outdoor receptions are also permitted since the 26th of April.
On the afternoon of Saturday the 29th of May, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds tied the knot at Westminster Cathedral. The small catholic ceremony was kept secret from the public until the release of a wedding photo which caught everyone’s attention. The low-key ceremony was celebrated with a small number of friends and family due to the current restrictions. The married couple has revealed that they will have another celebration next summer.

For the private event, Carrie Johnson picked a longsleeved Christos Costarellos wedding dress with leaf-embroidered details. The flowy gown enhanced a boho feel and the flower crown suited the backdrop perfectly. Boris Johnson wore a suit and a blue tie. Both of them looked elegant and Carrie stunned everyone with her modern and understated style. The new Mrs Johnson used to work in the Conservative Party press office, which she joined in 2010 and then went on to work on Mr Johnson’s

WHAT WILL WEDDINGS LOOK LIKE?
As we wait impatiently for the 21st of June, here are a few ideas to keep in mind as we move forward with Covid-19 free weddings. Especially during the summer months, outdoor locations are the best option. It has been confirmed that the chances of spreading Covid-19 outside are extremely low, and with social distancing in place, this should be a positive perspective for wedding celebrations. In addition to hand sanitizer stations
and face masks, it would be great to offer guests a Covid-19 rapid test on the day of the wedding. This takes away the worry of spreading the virus, especially if you have vulnerable guests attending. Awareness is definitely the best way to keep everyone safe, and after more than a year, reopening and celebrating safely is for sure a possibility. Always make sure to check and follow the latest government guidelines

STYLED SHOOT An intimate gathering to celebrate the things we treasure most - love, friendship, togetherness, and of course, a good meal. In a wild field, under an angelic and soothing sunset, friends broke bread and created memories to last a lifetime. For our farm-to-table dining experience, it was important for us to create a scene that spoke to our senses. From the fresh florals adorning the table in our favourite palette of toffee, ivory, blush and dusty rose, to the meal served, every sense was captivated and revitalized. Elegance, luxury, and refinement are the three words I would use to describe this wedding design and editorial shoot at Dover Hall Estate. This venue gives you the feeling of being at a fabulous location in Europe. But it’s located right outside of Richmond, Virginia, providing a very high level of service for all wedding couples. The shoot showcases the different moments of the bride’s day. As she gets ready for her first bridal look, she finds a letter from her groom. She runs out to meet him as he arrives at their wedding with the most beautiful white horse. Each gown is styled with couture bridal accessories, including a custom silk neck bow and a handmade floral headpiece by Colombian jewelry designer, Yajaira Ramirez. The gowns, from Naeem Khan Bridal, are hand-detailed with beautiful embroidery. The ballroom details were all carefully chosen to complement the creative direction.; velvet mauve linens paired with gold flatware and ornate drinking glasses. Even though the dinnerware is very detailed, I specifically selected white plates so they would pop against the darker linens and floral designs by Olivera.

STYLED SHOOT The carved fireplace in the ballroom was imported from an estate in Scotland and it towers at least 15 feet above you. I knew we would need a very large floral accent to even make a visual dent with the mantel and the floral designer did an amazing job by creating a feast for the eyes with an installation on the top left and lower right. The cake vignette has a flowing drape that cascades down off the gold table. This table design reflects the main reception table styling. With fruits, black wax candles, and of course the handmade sugar floral cake with textured mauve coloring. I can’t stop looking at the stationery and smaller fashion details for this shoot. The stationery was created by Crimson Letters out of England and is rich in gold and black detailing. They show a true command of fine art calligraphy and painted design work. I chose a blue velvet styling surface so the floral colors and other details would pop.

Jazmin and Alejandro Celebrated their love in the vibrant city of Chicago
W
e were both born and raised in Chicago, and most of our family is from here too, so it just made sense for us to celebrate our wedding in our city. Having a rooftop wedding has always been a dream of mine, so Loft Lucia was the perfect choice. It had the most beautiful furnishings and finishes that we knew would complement our décor well. We decorated the venue with florals, candles, a monochromatic dance floor, and gold accents. We also had gorgeous drapery behind the main table, which looked so beautiful and sophisticated! Our wedding planner, Lisa, also helped me to pick affordable yet luxury pieces like the silverware and glassware, which also added so much to our decor. Our colour palette was inspired by summer tones. Even though we had a fall wedding, early September in Chicago is still warm enough to feel like summer. We were also trying to go for a romantic look and I think our colour palette really helped with that! The main challenge we faced was getting married during a pandemic. The first issue was deciding whether to continue with our original plans. When we did, we not only had to reduce our guest list, we also had to consider new safety measures to make sure all our guests felt safe. Aside from the pandemic, we feel like there weren’t many challenges and I attribute that one hundred percent to our amazing wedding planner, Lisa from Storybook Wedding and Events! I got my dress from the only boutique in Chicago that has Galia Lahav dresses, Bella Bianca Bridal. I knew I always wanted a Galia Lahav dress even before I got married, and I’m so happy I was able to find a boutique in the city that had that designer. I didn’t know which dress from Galia’s collection I would like, but when I tried mine on, I instantly fell in love. A piece of advice I would give to couples planning their wedding would be to enjoy the process as much as you can and have fun with it! It can be stressful and overwhelming at times, but when you look back on the memories, you’ll realize it was all worth it! I miss planning a wedding, it was so much fun!

tied the knot overlooking the Mediterranean Sea
e love Cyprus, especially the Agia Napa area, and this has been a favourite holiday destination of mine for many years. We booked several venues to look at during our visit to Cyprus. The Cupule stood out as it was the only private and wedding venue, unlike most others, which were hotels, filled with guests. We knew we wanted a romantic, open-air venue with lush gardens and sea views, and The Cupule ticked all the boxes. All the decorations and planning were done by the in-house team. I discussed my ideas frequently with my planner via phone and Messenger and the team brought my dreams to life. My colour palette was inspired by the breathtaking gentle hues of the Cyprus sunset in the summertime. Every colour is minimized to the purest, most gentle shade. The pale palette enraptured the romanticism of the event. We tried to keep costs down, but our priority was to have the best day ever for ourselves and our guests. Our venue was awarded the best in the Mediterranean so we knew that it was the best not the most cost-effective, however, the owners Philisa & Marios upgraded us on a lot of things that they created in house, like flowers and illuminations, so we did get a really good value for money. For the minor details, I looked through glossy magazines and online. As a lot of my planning was done during the beginning of the national lockdown, I had plenty of time to review my ideas with my planners and create Pinterest boards, which really helped. As a hairdresser, I work within the beauty industry, so I keep up with the latest styles and trends. My friends and colleagues were on my guest list so there were plenty of us to create the perfect styles and visuals. Our destination wedding went very smoothly. Most of my guests booked through TUI and Jet2 so they all organized their own holidays within the area of Agia Napa & Protaras, at budgets they could afford. On the wedding day, my planner advised us to add a wedding bus that picked up all the guests at their hotels and brought them all to the venue, super easy and fun! What was challenging was organising a wedding during the Covid-19 crisis, as we had guests trying to travel from the UK, USA and Australia to be with us in Cyprus. We initially had 45 guests but they were reduced to 30 in the end. It taught us both that we could not control a lot of the circumstances that surrounded us. Celebrating our love with all of our closest ones was our dream, but at the end of the day, even though some of them could not be with us, they were with us in spirit, watching us through video chat and celebrating our union from the other side of the globe. Our tip to other couples is to relax, enjoy the process, give over all your concerns to the professionals. There are so many tiny things I did not have to think about or concern myself with as I picked a phenomenal team who did all of this for me. It wasn’t until the actual day that I saw everything they had discussed and I had approved fall into place seamlessly. I realised then how lucky I was to have had them by my side. Pick your planner well, someone who loves what they do.

Exchanged vows enveloped in the beautiful rural scenes
I
I am half French and my family has a home in the south of France where we spend most of our summer holidays. This is also where my parents first met, so it’s very dear to my heart. Joel and I knew we wanted to have a destination wedding as we both love the outdoors and wanted to celebrate somewhere warm and beautiful with everyone we love. Because of how much time we’ve spent in the south of France we had a few venues in mind just from our research and, also from recommendations from my family. We fell in love with the venue straight away, with its stunning lavender fields, vineyards and olive groves all around. We much preferred the farmhouse vibe to all the chateaux venues as it felt more laid back and suited to us. The venue and surrounding area really influenced my choices for our colour palette. We chose light blue/lilac for the bridesmaid dresses, as the venue has beautiful blue shutters and, for my flowers I went for really soft peaches and creams with hints of blue thistle and eucalyptus. My mum was incredible when it came to helping with the decorations. We used a lot of lights, candles and flower arrangements for the tables and a huge flower arch for the ceremony. A few personal touches included a family tree display and homemade jam wedding favours that my parents made. My dress was from the Mews Bridal in Notting Hill. They specialise in French designers with effortless and laid-back collections, and this is something I knew I wanted. I instantly fell in love with my dress which was from Laure de Sagazan. I wasn’t expecting a “that’s the one” moment but it really did stick in my mind from the moment I put it on. Planning a wedding abroad requires immense organisation as, you’re not going to be able to visit the location all the time which can be a bit stressful. Our venue organiser Veronique was absolutely amazing though and made the whole process very smooth from start to finish. One thing I would say to couples planning their wedding, is to make sure you visit your venue, don’t go on photos alone! Also having someone on your team who can speak the language is essential. I didn’t have a wedding planner because I speak French and my mum is French but, if I didn’t have her helping me it would have been much harder to plan.

Tell us about your latest collection Asteria.
Asteria is a showcase of inspiring designs that flatter the female form in the most sublime way. It features my signature cut and fit combined with exquisite detailing and confident silhouettes. There is a liberating freshness running through the collection. Our world has changed and brides are positive that their weddings will be a joyful celebration for them, their partners, and their families – and this has been my creative inspiration.
How has this past year been for you?
It has been a challenge, but I have used my time to find inner strength, resilience, and I’ve tried to be as creative as possible during this time. I have kept myself busy and worked full time throughout the whole of 2020. Myhusband, Martin, has been a constant support. I have also been surrounded by a highly skilled, loyal team who motivated me to come out of this stronger and better than before.
Are you excited about meeting with brides in the shops?
I have been in both my stores since we have reopened and it has been wonderful. I would be lying if I did not say I felt quite flat starting 2021. It’s been difficult not being able to do what I love but we are back and it’s all systems go!
How has Covid-19 changed your perspectives?
The safety of our brides and team has been our immediate concern, but it has heightened our awareness of just how important the planet is. We have been using the time to look at every aspect of the business. The team and I have always been passionate about it and these past 12 months have only strengthened our resolve to do more. There is no doubt, the team is smarter and more efficient than before, but our brides will continue to be our main focus. We will be working through the emotional journey with those who have had to postpone their wedding, or those just starting. For those brides we have been lucky enough to see during the pandemic, all of them have said how exciting their dress journey is.
Do you have any projects you’d like to share with us?
I have just launched my Spring Summer 2021 ready-to-wear collection and I am working on my bridal 2022 collection, which will launch later in the year.
Which bridal trends do you see on the rise?
After all the compromises we had to make in the last twelve months, I think that when it comes to their wedding, brides will not settle for anything less than perfect.
What are your brides looking for at the moment?
Our brides have been loving all our long-sleeved gowns including Sara, Iris, and Amber from my latest Asteria collection. A plunging neckline remains popular, especially when balanced with a longer sleeve.
Tell us about your Ready-to-Wear collection?
The collection has been designed for women who want beautifully cut pieces that can take them from coffee to cocktails – something we can finally all do! We have spent time perfecting the fit to work harmoniously with the beautiful fabrics we have used. The Ħaġar Qim megalithic temple complex is one of the most ancient remaining religious sites on earth. The UNESCO World Heritage site sits on a hilltop near Qrendi, a village on the Southern coast of Malta. You can tour the ruins and the Visitor Centre to learn more about these masterpieces of stone masonry from a forgotten age. To explore a more recent era of Maltese history, St John’s Co-Cathedral is Valletta’s historical crown jewel. Adorned with vaulted ceilings and a priceless painting by Caravaggio, it was built by the Order of the Knights of St John, who ruled Malta from the 16th to the late 18th century.

You’ll never be short of outdoor activities to enjoy in Malta. The azure waters, rugged limestone cliffs and warm sunshine will wash away the strains of city life and help you reconnect with nature. One of the most enticing natural spots to visit is the Blue Lagoon at Comino Island. This sparse island is home to only one hotel, which gives the area a distinctive ‘castaway’ feel. The shallow inlet of shimmering aquamarine waters is an idyllic setting for snorkelling, swimming and windsurfing. The Blue Grotto is another spectacular setting to explore by boat. Carved from centuries of coastal erosion, this sunlit cave system shines with an iridescent blue on clear bright days, and one of the inlets is fittingly known by the name of ‘honeymoon cave’.

rince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province, and it might just be the prettiest. WHAT TO DO CYCLING THE CONFEDERATION TRAIL
With blue skies, smooth roads, and pleasant landscapes, Prince Edward Island was made for cycling. A total of 435 kilometers, the Confederation Trail was developed on abandoned railway lines that go tip-to-tip across the Island, so it’s a special way to take in the beaches, farmlands, and National Parks. There are eight Provincial Parks in PEI and the island hosts some of Canada’s most beautiful beaches and warmest waters. It’s possible to go swimming during the summer in between clam digging, beach picnics and, if the weather is right, a spot of sunbathing. Prince Edward Island National Park is made up of the island’s iconic red sand cliffs, tangled woodlands, and calm coastal bays, making it ideal for an early rise and a full day of adventure. This National Park is also not too far from Green Gables Heritage Place – one of PEI’s most adorable attractions and home to Canada’s most famous literary heroine, Anne Shirley. ell, the fact is: glamping isn’t for everyone. However, it is an exploding new travel and wedding trend that is expected to grow to $5.4 billion by 2028. Millennials and the emergence of social media are driving this phenomenon up, but so is the impact of Covid-19—as couples express a desire for more remote, less people-oriented destinations. For those of you who don’t know, the idea of glamping has taken on many different names such as luxury camping or boutique camping. Whatever you name it, glamping is not a simple tent with no amenities or luxury services. The glamping experience typically offers guests real plush beds, sheets, full bathroom facilities, just to mention a few examples. Other amenities like refrigerators, coffee makers, even heaters, and air conditioning are offered by some as well. This wide range of glamping features is critical when selecting the venue. But, as the old saying goes, “it’s all about location, location, location.” Here in the U.S., you have over 1,200 different sites that offer glamping for weddings. These locations range from tree houses to large tipis, to massive tents, but they all share one common element — outdoor and rustic environments. Glamping can be so much fun when done properly and when the couple totally embraces the glamping spirit and idea. At Blame Her Ranch, we have recently added glamping as an additional lodging option. With our new offering, the couple experiences and offers glamping to their guests without giving up the more formal 9,000 sq. ft., 9-bedroom main lodge. In our particular case, our glamping experience consists of two Conestoga wagons right out of the 1850s. Each wagon is 20 feet long, 12.5 feet high, and 10 feet wide for a total of 180 sq. ft. They are decorated with Pendleton bedding, king beds, plus a twin bunk, a small dining table with a refrigerator, and a coffee maker. While each wagon is completely waterproof, each also offers both heating and air conditioning within the wagon itself-definitely something you would not find back in the 1850s. Just a few steps away from the wagons are two full shower houses complete with toilet, shower, sink, and their own heating and A/C units. We purposely parked the wagons in a remote location from the main lodge to provide a sanctuary and rustic feel.

Guests staying in the wagons have easy access to the Blame Her Ranch barn, ceremony area, great lawn, and lodge, thereby offering our guests the best of both worlds. As you might expect, a fire pit with rocking chairs is positioned between the two wagons for the full glamping experience. As we mentioned earlier about the location, the glamping guests have 70-mile views of the beautiful northern New Mexico wilderness. All in all, it was important for us to create a link between nature and glamping; to respect nature in a way that allows our guests to reconnect with the great outdoors while glamping in style with all the luxuries a private home would offer. blameherranch.com

oses have been around for much longer than humans, for millions of years. Fossils of rosaceous species have been found in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The earliest are primarily from the Eocene period, which spanned from 56 to 33,9 million years ago. This rose-like species eventually evolved into the wild roses we see today. Wild roses, however, probably don’t look like what you’re used to seeing. Roses are part of the Rosaceae family and naturally have only 5 petals. Cut roses, that we see by the dozens, are cultivated flowers. These have been bred over time to have more petals, and they grow differently compared to their wild counterparts. Roses have captivated people for centuries and have been part of major events throughout history. A world without roses would be so empty, but luckily, we have plenty of roses to admire and cherish. Nowadays, the most amazing roses available on the market for weddings and events come from France. George Delbard is a French nurseryman and rose breeder, founder of the company Pépinières et Roseraies Georges Delbard, known for creating new varieties of
roses. He describes his discoveries in “The Big Book of the Rose”. Georges Delbard had a mad passion for horticulture, incredible love for nature and an exceptional personality. Today, the Pépinières et Roseraies Georges Delbard have more than 250 varieties of roses and 80 varieties of fruit trees, which delight gardeners, amateurs and enthusiasts.
THE STORY I’M ABOUT TO TELL YOU IS ABOUT ONE PARTICULAR ROSE NAMED JULIETTA:
Juliette is an opera by Bohuslav Martinů who also wrote the libretto, in French, based on the play Juliette, ou La clé des songes (Juliette, or The Key of Dreams) by the French author Georges Neveux. Juliette has become widely considered Martinů’s masterpiece. Julietta is also a 1953 French romantic comedy film, directed by Marc Allégret and starring Dany Robin, Jean Marais, and Jeanne Moreau. As a name, Julietta stands for “Youngster, dedicated to Jupiter”. The “Julietta” variety was selected and introduced on the market in cooperation with the Redlands Rose farm, near Nairobi, and it has proved to be very popular. Julietta is not
so much a spray rose and not at all a standard rose. The Julietta has the shape of an authentic garden rose. That is why this variety is called a multi-head rose, rather than a spray rose. As of right now, Julietta is available as the original Julietta spray, and in 4 colour mutations: Julietta Cream, Julietta Cerise, Julietta Limoncello and Julietta Raspberry. The Julietta Spray rose has large buds with a pink perimeter and a pink-peach centre. It has a very light scent but it compensates with its exceptional beauty. This rose can be categorised in the premium garden roses collection. Available worldwide, this rose has a really good vase life and a shape that can’t be ignored! Garden roses are made for weddings, and I strongly recommend using this variety in bridal bouquets. WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION WHILST PLANNING WEDDINGS?
On one hand, I get my inspiration from visiting wedding venues! When I go to a beautiful venue on the top of a mountain or the side of a lake, I immediately envision my clients’ wedding with all the decorations and lowers. On the other hand, I get inspired by my clients’ love and life stories, their background and culture, and their vision for their wedding. Together we incorporate all the inspiration in a magical and unique wedding!

Tom Halliday Photography TELL US HOW YOUR JOURNEY IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY STARTED? I first got into weddings when I was working for another wedding photographer as his in-house retoucher. I would sometimes assist him with a few weddings and I learnt a lot from him. My dream has always been to be a professional skateboarder or skate photographer but, seven broken arms and three knee surgeries later, I had to give it up. I was then asked to shoot my friend’s wedding, which was a real honour and a new experience. Up to that moment, I had photographed family portraits, extreme sports and assisted other photographers as a second cameraman. I learnt a lot from that wedding, and I realised how much fun it is to shoot weddings and how much I love it. DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE? My style is very rustic, atmospheric, and a bit rough around the edges. I don’t like anything too polished, and I love showing emotion. I want my wedding photos to look like pieces of art. HOW HAS COVID-19 IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS? Well, we went from having full bookings for 2020, with more than eighty weddings, to shooting only eleven, which is pretty tough. My wife and I managed to pick up some part-time work photographing for a local furniture company but that was just to get us through. It’s been really difficult, and we’ve taken a significant hit, but we have had a lot of family time which has been great! WHY DO YOU THINK ELOPEMENT AND MICRO WEDDINGS ARE ON THE RISE? I think because people reevaluated the significance of weddings due to Covid-19, and it made couples realise what was truly important about their wedding. Maybe it wasn’t having three hundred people or having a twelve-tier cake; it is more about the connection between the couple and sharing their love with their closest friends and family. DO YOU HAVE NEW PROJECTS AHEAD? Losing the lockdown beer belly first of all! My main goal is to push myself to become a better photographer and deliver the highest quality images. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST? The buzz of a wedding! I miss seeing people truly happy and I can’t wait to capture something truly amazing for them. HAS THE PAST YEAR CHANGED THE WAY YOU WORK? I think I’m going to be more streamlined with my workflow. Before the lockdown, I was working six to seven days a week and during the lockdown, I’ve realised how amazing it is to just sit and have fun with my 8-year-old son and just chat with my wife. This period has shown me how much I was missing out on family time. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF WEDDINGS? I think there’s going to be a real 50-50 split. Some people are going to go big because of the restrictions and postponements they’ve had to deal with. Divorces can be hostile and, having certainty as to what is to occur in the event of a divorce or a permanent separation may reduce acrimony. It also avoids the need to incur expensive legal costs and, prevents potentially lengthy contested litigation before the courts if what each party gets or retains is clearly spelt out in the prenuptial agreement. No one enters into such an agreement expecting their marriage to fail but it is akin to an insurance policy and should the unthinkable happen, everyone knows where they stand. Although, there is an initial outlay, the cost saving can be immense. Essentially a pre-nup is a legal agreement made between two individuals before their marriage. It usually sets out how the couple wish their assets to be divided between them if they later separate or divorce. Individuals who are planning to become civil partners can also enter into a legal agreement before the registration of their civil partnership. Usually, the agreement will set out what each party owns at the time it is entered into and, will set out what constitutes ‘joint property’ and ‘separate property’. The joint property will usually consist of the matrimonial home and the proceeds of joint bank accounts. Separate property will usually consist of assets owned before the marriage, inherited assets and, gifts received by one party during the marriage. The agreement should be reviewed if there is a significant change in circumstances, such as the birth of a child.
ARE PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS BINDING?
LOVE, LIFE & THE LAW WITH LOUISE BARRETTO If you think a prenup might spoil your wedding romance consider a postnuptial agreement... It is not the most romantic thing on the marriage to-do list but, it is wholly reasonable that couples may wish to have more clarity and certainty on what may happen if they decide to separate or divorce in the future. In situations where one party comes from a wealthy background - and is likely to acquire significant family wealth during the marriage, their family may suggest that a prenup will provide protection in relation to dynastic wealth.

No, these agreements are not binding. The parties to a prenup cannot override the Court’s broad discretion to decide how to redistribute their assets and, income on an application for financial remedy on divorce. However, the UK Supreme Court has decided that they will uphold prenuptial agreements as long as they are fair. It may be that a nuptial agreement is given decisive weight. This will depend on the circumstances of the case, the way it has been drafted and prepared as well as what it provides. This is why specialist legal advice is essential for anyone considering entering into such an agreement. I would always encourage anyone considering a prenuptial agreement to first raise it with their future spouse or civil partner. They are agreements after all and will not get off the ground if the other party steadfastly refuses to enter into one. Although, each party to the agreement will require separate legal representation, I also suggest that one party should at least arrange to have a brief conversation with a specialist family solicitor ideally at least two months before their planned marriage date. This should allow sufficient time to prepare and finalise a prenup if appropriate. It is recommended that the agreement should be signed no less than 28 days before the marriage. The couple will also need to provide disclosure of their financial circumstances to each other. The costs will depend on the complexity of the couple’s financial situation but, each party’s solicitor should be able to provide an estimate of the likely costs at the end of their initial discussion. Judges will uphold agreements in nearly all cases where there is a pre or postnuptial agreement, provided certain conditions are met, one of which is having had independent legal advice and so long as the other person’s financial needs are adequately met. But if you handed it to Elaine Culotti she’ll prove you wrong — her courage and sheer determination knows no boundaries. Starting at the age of 14, she has grown a portfolio of successful businesses, beginning with a shoeshine company that she sold during her college years.

With her first million dollars under her belt in her early twenties, Culotti knew this would just be the start. Her interest in interior design and construction led her to set up her antiques and textiles import company, Porta Bella Design, as well as a real estate development business that builds everything from luxury residential homes to casinos and hospitals. Elaine sees each new project as a blank canvas and she is well-known for her transformation of the iconic House of Rock in Santa Monica. Throughout childhood, Elaine had exposure to different cultures and ways of life following her father’s international military career in England, Germany and Italy. It gave her the confidence to build a home wherever life takes her. Elaine is happiest on her 40-acre Big Z ranch in Fallbrook, California, where she runs a thriving working farm that partners with farmers to produce and deliver organic food boxes. For Elaine, the true American dream is being able to run a business and own a home, which she has done herself many times over, and she actively encourages others to do so themselves. In season two of the American TV hit series, Undercover Billionaire, Elaine Culotti fights against the odds (including the global pandemic and Yosemite wildfires) to bring her vision of transforming a run-down restaurant into a farm shop, deli, hotel and cafe complex in a short space of time. Being outside has always been important to me, so a honeymoon destination that has plenty of opportunities to spend time in nature and eat delicious homegrown food is my idea of heaven. SO ELAINE, IF YOU WERE TO PICK A HONEYMOON DESTINATION AGAIN WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
Travelling brings me so much inspiration and there are many places I’m grateful to have visited. Though for me, a honeymoon is all about being where my heart is, which is with the best man in my life. Out of everywhere I’ve been and lived, Italy is a place I’d return to again and again. The Italian Riviera is where it’s at; its beautiful coastal landscapes take my breath away. There’s something so unique about Positano on the Amalfi Coast, with its colourful cliffside villages and steep winding streets. The resort town of Ravello is another gem, set over the Tyrrhenian Sea with sweeping ocean views and beautiful cliff top gardens.
IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES A PLACE HONEYMOON WORTHY?
Romance has a lot to do with the temperature, which is why hot countries stand out as idyllic honeymoon destinations for me. I like very hot, sunny weather as it makes you slow down and savour the moment with your partner. I also love wearing beachwear, the summery smell of coconut oil and grazing on fresh fruit by the pool. Being outside has always been important to me, so a honeymoon destination that has plenty of opportunities to spend time in nature and eat delicious homegrown food is my idea of heaven.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP OR HONEYMOON TIPS?
My biggest tip would be to make sure your expectations about any relationship or honeymoon trip are realistic. By setting your expectations too high, it all might not live up to the level you hoped for. It’s important to have an open mind and take your sense of humour with you. Be understanding and forgiving with your partner as well as your hotel. That way you’ll make amazing memories even if things don’t go to plan! It will be perfect in its own way.

Undercover Billionaire was an incredible experience and I want to show that anyone can make it if they invest in their existential wealth. This is wealth that is acquired through skill, natural-born talent and other non-monetary means. Going forwards, I look forward to more real estate development projects on the Californian coast and sustainable farming at my Big Z ranch. I’m passionate about growing the ‘Two Hand Touch’ initiative that delivers fresh pesticide-free vegetable boxes to Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica.
