What is your favourite romantic movie? I’d have to say The Notebook, a true example of lasting love. Their relationship isn’t perfect, but it stands the test of time. Which place in the world do you dream of returning to? Kenya — climbing a hill on safari with a perfect view of the wildlife was one of the most peaceful moments of my life.

MARSHA-ANN

Director of Romance for Sandals and Beach Resorts

What is your favourite romantic movie? My favourite romantic movie is Titanic, I really am a hopeless romantic and it’s still top for me. Which place in the world do you dream of returning to? I am fortunate enough to call The Caribbean home, so it is a destination I will always hold very close to my heart. My favourite islands are St Lucia and exotic Granada. I can’t choose between them!

What is your favourite romantic movie? I know its cliche but it has to be the notebook. It gets me every time! Which place in the world do you dream of returning to? Definitely somewhere in the Caribbean. Probably Jamaica for the jerk chicken and rum punch!

Sardinian Serenity HONEYMOON INSPIRATION

Surrounded by dramatic precipices and scalloped bays, Northern Sardinia is a rustic delight...indulge in five star luxury at Hotel Marinedda Thalasso & SPA

C

ast your gaze towards the red granite stone cliffs radiating with the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Distinctively poised on a gently sloping peninsula, just 1km from the ancient fishing village of Isola Rossa; Hotel Marinedda Thalasso & SPA is encircled by unspoilt nature with magnificent views of the Asinara Gulf. Forming a part of North Sardinian Delphina Hotels & Resorts chain, this North Sardinian hotel provides an idyllic equilibrium between wilderness and sheer superfluity.

A Room with a View

The elegant suites are designed with the surroundings at the forefront. Hand-finished by dedicated local craftsmen, Mediterranean authenticity is infused throughout the entirety of the hotel. It is a calming space where you’ll feel instantly at ease in the simplicity of rural Sardinian living. The romantic Executive Elicriso Sea View suite is designed with couples in mind, with a spacious double room, and an open plan living room decorated to the height of luxury. Open the large doors onto your private terrace where your private jacuzzi appears to melt into the horizon. Submerge into the heated seawater and take in the spectacular panoramic vistas as you bathe.

Taste of the Mediterranean

There is plenty of choice when you come to dine at Hotel Marinedda. With five restaurants on offer, each has a unique style and menu to satisfy all tastes. Using local fresh ingredients and wines, you will enjoy a medley of Mediterranean flavours as well as international dishes. At the Petra Ruja restaurant, enjoy the expert show cooking service, where the chef’s exquisite hot and cold specialties are cooked before your eyes, or follow the delicious aromas to Pizzeria Basarico, where traditional wood-fired pizzas are served.

Cruise the Corsican Archipelago

For those wanting to explore beyond the shores of charming Isola Rossa, Hotel Marinedda offers a mini-cruise across the Straits of Bonifacio to the beautiful island of Lavezzi and the famous stretch of sand at Isola Piana. Unwind on the pristine beaches and spot wild dolphins from the coastline, or alternatively, take a half-day snorkeling excursion, to explore the plethora of marine life in the Gallura waters (hotelmarinedda.com).

Relax and Rejuvenate

Those who have booked into this luxurious suite will also gain complimentary access into the Elicriso Thalasso Centre & Spa, where the Thalasso pool, Turkish bath, sauna and gym will further aid you in fully switching off all your day-to-day worries. As one of the largest wellness centres in Sardinia, its fundamental element involves the use of mineral-rich seawater for its spa treatments; purified by the currents of the Asinara Gulf Straits of Bonifacio. This is accompanied by implementing aromatic local plants on account of their natural therapeutic and rejuvenating qualities. www.dwha.co.uk

And what better way to commemorate the occasion by indulging in a traditional English afternoon tea! We’ve tracked down the most regal high tea spaces in London… A ROYAL EXPEDITION CASTLE HOTEL Adorned with magnificent furnished rooms and authentic fine artwork, there is no better place to enjoy a royal afternoon tea experience. As one of Windor’s oldest standing buildings, the majestic Castle Hotel has been delighting diners since the 16th century and was a personal favourite of the Duke of Wellington. With a classic blend of rich British culture and sophistication, the Castle Hotel provides an elegant setting to indulge in a royal high tea. Complete with finger sandwiches, an array of cakes and homemade scones, clotted cream and of course freshly brewed tea or coffee. THE BOTANICAL FOR TWO KEW GARDENS At Kew Gardens, the ‘botanical for two’ is the ultimate experience for tea and nature lovers alike! Featuring the most diverse plant life from around the world, tour the grounds of this UNESCO World Heritage site and uncover 250 years of history. Saunter along the Great Broad Walk Borders and witness a spectacular kaleidoscope of colour from over 60,000 flowering plants. Choose from an assortment of afternoon specials, from traditional, to vegetarian, and also the Gardener’s afternoon tea. Indulge in your delicate tea pastries as you overlook the picturesque views of Pond and Palm House (kew.org). TAKING HIGH TEA TO NEW HEIGHTS… OBLIX RESTAURANT Offering breathtaking views and elite dining experiences, the Oblix Restaurant is the epitome of luxury. Located on the 32nd floor of the Shard, this iconic venue offers a quintessential take on the classic British afternoon tea. BUSTLING BUS TOURS B BAKERY Take in some of the city’s best sights whilst indulging in a fabulous B afternoon tea. These vintage Routemaster buses drive through the animated streets of central London; they capture the city buzz and offer you a true English tradition all in one tour. It’s a high tea with a French twist, so delight in delicious array of cakes and pastries as you watch the dials turn on Big Ben or catch a glimpse of the energetic dog-walkers at St James Park! Why not make it a group event and hire out the entire bus, or even just one level for a little more intimacy. It’s a great location for a bridal shower or hen party! (london.b-bakery.com). A LUXURY EXPERIENCE: BATEAUX LONDON Escape the hustle and bustle of London life and take in the tranquil scenic views of the River Thames on board the Harmony vessel. Treat yourselves to a delicious selection of sandwiches, pastries and scones as you sail past iconic British Landmarks like St Pauls Cathedral and the Tower of London. You can even bring the kids along for a treat with their family package — keep their minds entertained with fun games and quizzes on board your luxury cruise (bateauxlondon.com).

MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM THE SWAN Experience the twists and turn of Shakespeare’s ethereal romantic comedy with an afternoon tea worthy of the Fairy Queen herself. The Swan’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Afternoon Tea is inspired by the journeys of its most prominent characters. From the pea flower of Oberon’s love potion, the apricots Titania feeds to Bottom and even mulberries from the Lovers’ Tree. Indulge in a whimsical mix of delectable traditional tea treats from flower-infused macarons to glazed white chocolate nibbles; presented on bespoke crockery, whilst overlooking the stunning London views. Female Globetrotters Here is our hand-picked selection of some of the greatest photographers to capture your big day BERMUDA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

FIANDER FOTO

Melanie Fiander One of my greatest aspirations as a wedding photographer is to have my “ customers feel both at ease and relaxed while in front of the lens. To calm their nerves, I have an activity that I call “Show Me Your You” where I have the couple act out all kinds of film scenarios, silly dances and antics to keep it fun and light-hearted. Typically, I work under natural light for a softer setting, but I do take both candid and traditional photography. When the schedule is well thought and everyone is in sync, that’s when the magic happens!

COPENHAGEN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Sandra Åberg

“My love for light and airy images is what made me passionate about wedding

photography. I think getting the couples to relax in front of the camera is my greatest goal. Ideally the couple should look in love and happy in their images and that only comes out when they loosen up and relax into it. I want my clients to think back to their special day and remember all the fun and laughter. To be honest, I think I have a pretty awesome job. I get to be my own boss, travel to stunning places and meet amazing people. I get to be creative and that is the best part!

SANDRA ÅBERG

CZECH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

KHIRIA PHOTOGRAPHY

Eliška Fischerová As owner of the Khiria photography brand, I am proud to extend to you a “ personalised experience on your wedding day. Taking your wishes into careful consideration, I will capture the atmosphere and spirit of your magnificent matrimonial ceremony. Prague is my country of origin, although half of my portfolio is now made of international clientele, so do not hesitate to enquire as I am available on location. My job is my greatest passion so I will likely be caught up with emotion as I work hard, but do not worry as I will deliver a spectacular array for you and your partner to cherish long after your big day.

An interview with

Sharon Sacks

Internationally sought after with an impressive clientele list, Sacks Productions creates extraordinary events for some of the world’s elite. DWHA speaks to founder Sharon Sacks to hear her opinions on the Royal wedding

I

f the Royal wedding plans were up to me, one of the first things I would do is research Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to determine their dayto-day style as well as their likes and dislikes. I love in person meetings with my couples, as during this time a bond is built. These intimate conversations create a trust that allows my team and I to authentically represent our clients in all elements of the wedding. It is at that time the planning begins and we work with the couple to decide what will be woven into their wedding. Once the scope of the project has been determined, I would then reach out to the world’s finest vendors to assist in executing their monumental evening. Renderings and models of the event would also be prepared to present to the future Princess and Prince Harry! Once this is approved, the building begins.

DWHA || july / august

“ I would choose a neutral palette by candlelight, adorned with romantic details ” EACH WEDDING IS its own work of art. Working with royalty includes attention to protocol and media management. Royal weddings are viewed by the world with much anticipation. Our goal is to create very intimate and private moments for Meghan and Prince Harry throughout their very public wedding day. WHEN A BRIDE AND GROOM are so in love, the less distraction from them, the better. For the reception design, I would choose a neutral palette lit by candlelight, adorned with romantic details. For the flowers, I would choose peonies, “The Queen of the Flowers”. They are not only a perfect fit, but also Meghan’s favourite! I’d utilise voluminous blooms at varying stages coupled with at least one sprig of myrtle, to uphold the Royal tradition.

ROYAL WEDDING

“ It will be a honeymoon never to be forgotten ” FOR MEGHAN’S DRESS, I predict that it will be a bespoke creation by coutelier Ralph & Russo! Their designs are perfect for our future Princess. I also think it would be incredible to have Ed Sheeran perform “Perfect” alongside Andrea Bocelli for the couple’s first dance! IF THE COUPLE WASN’T GETTING MARRIED at Windsor Castle, I would recommend a traditional English garden ceremony in London, with a modern twist. I imagine Princess Meghan and Prince Harry surrounded by fresh, vivid blooms and elegant décor. Blenheim Palace would be magical. For their honeymoon, I would suggest The Maldives, as is it so private and romantic. The beaches and chilled vibes would be an incredible gift after their whirlwind celebration. For the second leg of the trip, I imagine them visiting the beauty of Africa and connecting to the magnificent landscapes and purity of the animals. It will be a honeymoon never to be forgotten. “THEIR WEDDING IS SHARED WITH THE WORLD, and the world feels a part of it.” My first advice to the royal couple would be to carve out moments during the wedding that are intimate and just for the two of them. I believe Meghan and Harry are a perfect couple. A wedding is a dream of love and connection. When they find themselves at the altar, I recommend they take a moment to look back at the guests celebrating their union. Additionally, I would suggest that Meghan engages with her dress designer to embroider a special message to her husband in the lining of her gown that would be for his eyes only!

An interview with

Diana Da Ros Event planner, Diana Da Ros, uses her international experience and elegant creativity to organise spectacular weddings and honeymoons. With the help of various experts in Italy, Diana shares her predictions and advice for Meghan and Harry’s wedding

T

he perfect colour palette for the Royal wedding would be white and ivory with a touch of blue — a well-known Royal colour. The blue could also be used on the wedding stationery. Royal tradition has a specific etiquette for invitations, but a modern day Princess should be able to choose the small details, like a dash of colour. Additionally, it would be lovely for the couple to reinterpret the timeless tradition of English teatime. Taking the classic designs of English teacups, they could adapt them to create contemporary versions. MEGHAN’S WEDDING DRESS should be elegant, important and made with classic prestigious fabrics. However, it can be contemporary too. For example, blue hand-painted English roses could give the dress a lace effect in some significant points, such as the collar and shoulder. With bridal designer, Mrs Chiara Vitale, we have created special dresses for the wedding. For the ceremony, we chose a bustier dress in duchess fabric with a wide skirt and tail, covered by a frock coat. A light veil completes the look, where the end resumes this work of painting and embroidery. We’ve also created a dress for the reception — a blue dress of silk crépon with a mix of bias draping in the back, and a long tail! FOR THE CAKE, our proposal prepared by cake designer Mami Louise, is four-tiered. It would be decorated with toile de jouy prints on sugar sheets, a silver airbrush colour, and coordinated with wafer paper flowers. It would of course be a banana cake, as that’s Meghan and Harry’s favourite flavour! WITH ONE OF MY FAVOURITE Italian flower designers, Alberto Menegardi, we realised a special bouquet for

46

DWHA || july / august

“ It would be lovely for the couple to reinterpret the timeless tradition of English teatime” Meghan. It includes myrtle (for the Royal tradition), lily of the valley, carnation of poets, hyacinth, English roses, buttercups, thyme, branched roses, jasmine, asparagine, bouvardia, wild fennel, alstroemeria, eucharis, wax flower and helleborus. IF THE ROYAL COUPLE HAD CHOSEN ITALY for their wedding, I would suggest a historic and romantic location, such as Castello degli Angeli. Situated near Bergamo, this venue has a beautiful park and spectacular nave of a deconsecrated church. It would be perfect for the Royal wedding due to the possibility of ensuring maximum privacy. For the religious ceremony, I would absolutely suggest Bergamo’s Cathedral for its historical relevance and amazing beauty. For their honeymoon, I would recommend a very remote place to visit, such as the Afar Triangle in East Africa. The region is thought by some paleontologists to be the cradle of the evolution of humans. After this, I would suggest a relaxing week in Mozambique. MY TOP TIP for the couple is to be themselves. People all over the world love their breaking of traditional choices, so their day should be a contemporary and up-to-date celebration. I suggest that they continue making choices with their heart. British and American traditions can coexist in a fabulous, romantic and memorable royal setting.

An interview with

Events by Helena Award-winner of DWHA’s Wedding Planner of the year for Canada 2017, Helena Stratikopoulos unveils her ideas on how the Royal couple should tie the knot

T

he marriage of the modern day Prince and Princess will transcend into a one of kind wedding. Yet, the laid-back style of the Royal couple leads me to believe that they would like a more demure wedding set up. Seeing as their romance traces back a significant date in the remote outback landscapes of Africa, my first choice would be to see their ceremony in a safari style tent in the Tanzanian wilderness. THIS MAGNETIC COUPLE defines how opposites attract, and I would manipulate the colour scheme to suit this concept. For the palette, I predict classical shades combined with the exotics. For example, Magenta with hues of purples and light corals would form the base, and they would be accented with pops of ivory and blush pink. FOR THE FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS, a romantic blend of vintage roses, orchids, peonies and of course magnolias would give a timeless feel. Highlights of greenery would further freshen the bouquet, and for the table flowers, a sprinkling of candlelights amongst the displays would bring a soft and gentle glow beneath the billowing canvas tents. I HOPE TO SEE LOTS OF CHARMEUSE in ivory, which will drape over Meghan’s figure beautifully and the candlelight will reflect off the fabric as she dances. I am wishing for an open back dress design with ornate vintage lace and an understated amount of crystals. Ofcourse, the outfit would not be complete without a long regal train.

48

DWHA || july / august

ADDING PERSONAL TOUCHES on the wedding day is so important; it will be the key to letting the guests feel their special romance, and allow them be a part of the love story they have created together. I recommend that both Harry and Meghan find time in their busy planning schedules to connect with each other before they embark on their new married life. WHEN THE CELEBRATIONS draw to a close, the Royal newlyweds will be whisked away on the honeymoon of their dreams. There are so many astonishing locations to list, but I think they would love the primitive and elusive setting of Zanzibar. I WISH THE COUPLE LOTS OF LOVE, joy and happiness and above all, may they continue to inspire all of the ‘nonromantics’ to believe in fairy tales, take the plunge to fall in love and find their happy ever after!

An interview with

Joyce Barbour Montana-based Joyce Barbour, of Be Our Guest Wedding & Event Planner, gives her ideas and predictions for the upcoming Royal Wedding.

“ Take deep

breaths and just enjoy planning this amazing day

’’

I

f the Royal couple were not organising their marriage at Windsor castle, I would draw upon Ms Markle’s American heritage and plan a rustic outdoor Montana wedding, at one of our many all-inclusive ranches. The ceremony would be held in a wide open meadow with a stunning mountain landscape as a backdrop. Ms. Markle would arrive in a horse-drawn carriage, which would seamlessly tie into the natural outdoor setting. The décor would also include aspects of Montana’s Native American culture, including long wooden benches that the guests would be seated on. After the ceremony comes to a close, the guests would be guided to a reception beneath under a large luxury tent. The wedding feast would be presented on long wooden tables with matching bench seating and a banquet to follow the theme. The menu would be a mix of American outdoor barbeque dishes with some English cuisine favourites! FOR THE COLOUR SCHEME, Harry and Meghan’s springtime wedding in May would suit bursts of fresh colours against more neutral tones. It would represent their young romance and bright personalities. For example, the palette would have a base of soft sugary white, with pops of tangerine and peach.

MEGHAN’S ENVIABLE FRAME will suit any design, but for me I think a Mermaid style gown of satin and lace would really enhance her slim body shape. I can imagine her dress to have a high lace Victorian style collar, long sleeves, with pearl buttons down the back, as well a long lace panel train to make a statement on the aisle. THE ROYAL WEDDING will ofcourse be a traditional affair, but I am sure Harry and Meghan will bring a modern twist to the special occasion. With customs in mind, and to add a personal touch, I would bring back a penny in the bride’s shoe, hide a charm in the wedding cake and suggest that the bride writes a romantic letter to her groom the evening before their big day. They can then cherish fond memories of life before and after the official ceremony. On the contemporary side, I love the use of lots of fresh greenery at the chapel, unique escort cards and implementing copper furnishings at the reception to add warmth to the décor.

ONCE HARRY AND MS MARKLE have been announced man and wife, the public eye will turn to where they will escape to for their honeymoon. I predict that they will choose a destination that celebrates their love of the outdoors. Considering this, I would pick Taveuni, Fiji, where they can enjoy the wonderful beaches, lush jungles, waterfalls and FOR THE FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS, vibrant summery the abundant wildlife. blooms such as tulips, ranunculus and anemone, or a mix of romantic shades and shapes with popular peonies and My top tip would be roses. To fill out the bouquet, I would suggest incorporating take deep breaths and just enjoy planning this amazing day. feathery fronds of heather and Dusty Miller, or perhaps for a Be true to yourselves—a strong marriage starts with trust bolder inclusion, Bells of Ireland. and listening to each other.

An interview with

Edward D’Alessandro The owner of Castello Dei Baroni discusses why this historic castle is the pinnacle of romance, and a dream venue to hold a fairy tale wedding

I

n a class of its own, Castello Dei Baroni wedding Venue is located in the inner part of Wardija, one of Malta’s most exclusive northern countryside locations. Wardija is a hamlet in St Pauls Bay, located at approximately 363 feet above sea level. The scenic drive up the hill to Castello dei Baroni guides you through idyllic villages and rural countryside, where the surroundings emanate a sense of untainted seclusion and privacy. Steeped in history, the castle was inhabited in the Roman period and several ancient archeological remains have been discovered from this era. From the 16th until the 18th centuries, a number of knights and noble families built their country residences here, and regularly used the extensive grounds and the castle as a Baronial hunting lodge. CASTELLO DEI BARONI WAS BUILT during the reign of Fra’ Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, the Grand Master of the Order of St John in 1783. Since then, the landlords of the site, from Prince Grand Master Meritus Duke of Mount Touside and Saint John GCSJ, through to the late Adrian Busietta and Dame Marie Angelique Caruana GCSJ, have ensured that much of the original structure has been carefully renovated and restored. Thanks to these owners, the refurbishing of this stunning Castello has left an important legacy, maintaining its status as one of Malta’s most prestigious wedding venues, and a historical landmark in Wardija. In fact, Sir Cliff Richard, Russell Crowe, HRH Prince Sandor Hapsburg Lothringen and HIRH Princess Herta Margarete are amongst many distinguished personalities who have visited. WHAT IS PARTICULARLY SPECIAL about a wedding at Castello Dei Baroni is that the atmosphere still feels close -knit, private and intimate. It is a unique place to marry in Malta, and an enchanting venue for both wedding receptions and civil partnerships. We are fully licensed for civil ceremonies and couples can choose to exchange their vows either indoors or outdoors. The medieval reception hall is beautifully designed and is elevated to overlook the gorgeous pool and garden area. The hall is also a very popular choice, with marble floors, stone walls, very high ceilings

with antique wooden beams, courtyards and ancient turrets. Another lovely option is outside by the pool with thecastle as a backdrop, a simply magical setting. THE UPPER FLOOR of the castle is fully dedicated to a museum from the periods of the knights in Malta. It incorporates a chapel and a library, with original priceless handwritten manuscripts on various topics such as Medieval History, Doctrine and Law. Unfortunately therefore, we do not offer accommodation for brides and grooms-to-be at the Castle, but a large number of four and five star hotels are located within a short fifteen minute drive. WE ARE PLEASED TO OFFER a full in-house wedding service. Malta’s five star outside catering company, Delicia Catering, is based here and provides a bespoke banqueting service. We also offer full wedding planning or partial wedding planning, as well as wedding coordinator services. Couples love these concepts, with a variety of options to select to create a day that suits them and their budget best. We are here to help them finalise every detail to create the wedding of their dreams. There’s something very special about Castello Dei Baroni; it really is a fairy tale wedding venue. If hosting a ceremony in an authentic, historically significant castle appeals to you, then look no further. Prepare to be blown away by this romantic wedding venue in Malta, the European Capital for Culture 2018.

REAL LIFE WEDDING

Dreamy décor

Bohemian seating with cushions and carpets were used to create a warm atmosphere

I’ve always dreamed of

getting married in Italy, as the food is out of this world and the people are so hospitable. Overall, Puglia offered us the latest music licensing for an all-night party! My wedding planner sent me the details of Masseria Potenti and after a fleeting 24 hour visit, I was in love! I was felt like part of the family the moment I arrived, and the place was incredible. I loved the rustic, bohemian vibe. The venue offered a lot of decorations to choose from. We went for some large typical Apulian lights. I’d seen an upside down hanging flower style at another wedding and wanted to replicate that for our tables. I knew I wanted a deep burgundy to contrast the white-washed surroundings, so I ended up choosing a light blue to go with it. The flowers were a bit of a risk since I didn’t get to see the bouquets in advance, but they turned out beautifully. For my dress, I went to a number of London boutiques, but settled on a custom-made Mira Zwillinger gown from Browns Bride after attending a trunk show. I never thought I’d go for strapless, but somehow it just felt right. As I didn’t want to be surprised on the day, I took my hair stylist and makeup artist with me from the UK. I wanted a Hollywood curl to complement the strapless neckline of my dress, and had my hair clipped to the side to give it a fresh style without the need for retouching throughout the day. Our biggest challenge was the transportation, as the location was fairly remote. We decided to organise transport for the three events across the weekend, but with guests spread all round the local area, this wasn’t easy. In hindsight, I’d have perhaps left them to make their own way!

REAL LIFE WEDDING

Add personality

The converse are a playful and comfortable alternative to traditional wedding heels!

My family is small,

but my husband’s is large, so we wanted to stay close to home to celebrate with our family and close friends. We chose to get married at our home church, which is where we met and both currently work. Most of my bridesmaids live out of state, so they all stayed with me for the week of the wedding — even my photographer stayed with me! Other than getting married, that was my favourite part. It is so rare for me to have all of my friends in the same place at once, so there are lots of sweet memories from that time. I love deep dramatic themes, and so my palette consisted of marsala, navy and blush, with a hint of rose gold. To decorate the venue, I used over fifty feet of ivy to create an enchanted bohemian garden look, with hints of rock ‘n’ roll. I sourced all my décor from markets and spent hours polishing candlesticks and trinkets, as I wanted each DIY centrepiece to be unique. I also bought a pretty journal to use a guest book to save on costs. My favourite furnishing that I did personally was draping the different fabrics over the tables, especially the memoriam table which featured portraits of our late grandparents. I got my dress at Lulu’s Bridal in Dallas, Texas, and the one I ended up choosing was the first one I picked off the rack. I love the floral details on the bodice and neckline. My wedding was greatly inspired by The Garden album by Kari Jobe and the dress captured that aesthetic. I decided to have pink hair for my wedding. Well, I started off with more of a rose gold look, but the night before, I put in a little too much pink conditioner, so it turned out to be a much more dramatic shade of pink. Luckily though, it went so well with the colour palette! I can’t wait for the day our kids look at our photos and say “wow, Mom you had pink hair when you got married?!”

Jojo’s top tip

It is easy to to feel like you have to meet everyone’s expectations, but it should be a reflection of you and your husbandto-be. Decide what really matters to you both, and go with that.

After one week using this serum, I start to see a gradual whitening on my teeth. I like the soft but refreshing mint flavor and the brush applicator is really convenient. I prefer to leave it to work all night after my last brushing of the day with Perl Drops Daily Whitening Instant Boost. — Ana

This beautifully scented spray transforms the feel of your hair in minutes, simply spray onto damp hair and style as you wish. You only need a couple of pumps for maximum coverage, so the bottle will last a long time, which is an added bonus! After using the Vitamin E moisturiser for a few days, I noticed a significant difference to my skin. The moisturiser rejuvenates your skin making it appear smooth and vibrant. A Cultural Retreat MOROCCO Behold the golden gateway to Africa! Morocco is a country bursting with vibrant diversity, dizzying mountain ranges and silent deserts awaiting your discovery

S

words by Vanessa Donkoh

ituated on the northwestern tip of Africa, this sizzling landscape is home to rugged coastlines and forested hills, making it the perfect place for thrill-seeking adventurists. The richly coloured sands of the Sahara Desert and the rocky hillsides of the Atlas Mountains beckon active voyagers, whilst the cultural metropolis of Jemaa el-Fna and the ancient Medina Quarter brim with indigenous activities, souvenirs and storytelling natives. The pearlescent sands and cobalt waves of Agadir beach is the perfect break from the vibrant city life of Marrakech, offering a lavish relaxing alternative for newlyweds seeking luxury. Partake in a myriad of experiences in the magical realm of Morocco.

Saharan escapades

If you had to choose one destination that embodies the magic of Morocco, it would be the boundless planes of the Sahara Desert. Alive with refreshing desert oases and curvaceous golden sands, visiting this sparse wonderland is a must. What better way to experience this unforgettable landscape than by a camel ride? Begin your trip in the late afternoon and trek though endless yellow speckled sands and mountain high dunes. Bathe in the sultry Moroccan sun and allow the smooth winds to cool your warm skin. Later in the evening, gather

around the fire, enjoy indigenous drum music and listen to ageless nomad tales of the perilous desert journeys of ancient times. Before you shut your eyes, gaze at the clear night sky embellished with shimmering stars, sprinkled around the indulgent milky way; they appear so close that you could almost reach out and touch them. Your thrill-seeking adventures don’t have to end there. Perhaps ride across the rocky terrains on the outskirts of the desert plains. Equipped with your all-terrain vehicle and helmet, rev the engine and set off on the stony grounds to discover the rural Moroccan palm groves and winding trails of the natural surroundings by quad bike.

The Open Square

Contrary to its name, ‘assembly of the dead’, Jemaa el-Fna, the heart of Marrakech is pulsating with cultural life. Rich in vibrant and vivid experiences, the capital’s marketplace is the place to be. As the sun rises, the Berber musicians strike up the music, the snake-charmers flutes begin, and authentic sounds grace your senses. Henna tattoo artists charm passersby and water sellers hope to quench your thirst. Market vendors offer freshly pressed orange and grapefruit juices, while neighbouring carts are embellished with seasonal nuts and berries for an on-the-go snacks as well as rich coloured patterned rugs and accessories. Brimming with eclectic exhibitions, join the spectating crowds to watch the flexible acrobats, talented performers and witty comedy acts. As the sun sets, storytellers bring urban legends

Blue Pearl

Nestled in the rocky Rif mountains is the cobalt gem of Chefchaouen. Founded in 1471, the blue village is best described as otherworldly. The mystical theories behind the ancient Medina differ. Some say it was painted blue by the Jews when they settled there, and others say it was to keep the mosquitos away. But one thing we are certain of, is that its endless pathways and vivacious embellishments make it one of the most exceptional landmarks in Morocco. The still white and blue palette contrasts with the arid setting and make for an

Private paradise THE MALDIVES

T

he Maldives is an emerald equator, consisting of over a thousand small coral islands peppering the azure waters found southwest of Sri Lanka and India. This country of isles dazzles visitors with its fusion of Arabic, Indonesian, Malaysian, African, French and Creole cultures, making it such a diverse destination to explore. But above all, it is world-renowned for its undersea beauty. Imagine waking up to the sound of the ocean from your oversea bungalow, strolling along pearlescent powdery sands and dipping your toes into crystalline turquoise waters. There really is no place quite like the Maldives; a tropical archipelago where resorts dapple its isles, but maintain an atmosphere of utter seclusion. Slowing down to the pace of the ocean will refresh your body clock, and bring lasting memories right from the start of your new married life.

Serendipity at Sea

With most of the Earth’s surface explored, the underwater kingdom is a realm unknown to many. A whole new world in itself, the Indian ocean is brimming with a kaleidoscope of colour from tropical clown fish nestling in anenomes below, to wallowing turtles bobbing up to the surface. exquisite array of marine species in what feels like a bottomless warm bath. The temperate oceans mean that you can explore the oceans all without the fuss of a wetsuit. Hanifaru Bay is a famous flocking spot for gentle whale sharks, but is best known for its elegant reef manta rays gliding through the shallows — a once-in-a-lifetime experience to behold. Another way to truly appreciate the complete natural beauty of the Maldivian ocean is to take a scenic flight. Soar above the cerulean seas speckled with islands and coral reefs and view it all from a breathtaking bird’s-eye view. It will be an unforgettable experience, seeing the beautiful islands stand out over miles and miles of ocean, together on your honeymoon.

Cultural Variety

No trip to the Maldives is alike, you can create your own itinerary and visit multiple islands all in one stay. It is easy to book ferries to travel from one atoll to the next. Embrace the nomadic spirit of island living and and spend your days strolling some of world’s most breathtaking beaches or immerse yourselves in the pockets of culture spread across the archipelago. The sporadic cultural communities breathe vibrancy into this tranquil natural oasis.

DESTINATIONS

Malé, the capital of the Maldives, is a thriving populace that offers a stark contrast to the easy-going life of the islands. Maldivians themselves are renowned for their warm welcome, and will be happy to show you around their native country. Whilst in the city, be sure to wander through the lively Majeedhee Magu markets and soak in the sounds of the traditional boduberu drumming and dance rituals! In the heart of the city also lies the colonial style presedential Mulee Aage palace, built for Prince Hassan Izzuddin in 1920 upon his return from studying in Colombo!

Dine in the Depths

Nothing quite matches the Maldivian experience than a meal caught, prepared and served beyond and below the water’s edge. Ithaa, meaning ‘mother of pearl’ in Dhivehi, is a submerged restaurant located at five metres below sea level. Its glass walls offer a panoramic view of coral gardens and darting schools of rainbow fish! Beneath this extraordinary dome, qualified as the world’s largest aquarium tunnel, this unique restaurant boasts a European-style six-course set dinner menu and an exclusive 14 seats. But, if you want to score extra points with your newlywed and add extra intimacy, you can book it privately for breakfast (conradhotels3.hilton.com).

Moonlit Magic

Encounter a unique phenomenon as the moon rises over Mudhdhoo Island. Beneath the indigo sky, the ocean begins to glow with what appears to be a sea of stars. What you think may be a reflection of the night sky is in fact thousands luminescent specks caused by Ostracod crustaceans. I

t is little wonder that when Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba in 1492, he declared it “the most beautiful island”. Even today, the fortunate visitors and happy couples that travel to Cuba are still blown away by the sheer beauty of the legendary cities. The largest of the Caribbean Islands, Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean Sea and is home to over 200 picturesque beaches made up of quintessentially turquoise waters and sugar-white sands. If you are seeking seclusion, the southern beaches are less populated, offering plenty of peace and serenity to soak up some rays with your sweetheart. Cuba is most certainly primed as a romantic haven, with old-fashioned romance flowing through the veins of this atmospheric country. You’ll be swept up in the sheer romance of Havana in seconds. With a frisson of history, cobblestone streets, crumbling colonial casas and plazas, it will have you at hola! If you’re an adventurous couple looking for a truly unique destination, Cuba certainly fits the bill.

A small nation with a big personality, there is no country quite like Cuba. Delve into its unique cultural treasure trove and experience the music, art, invigorating energy and creative spirit of the locals. Cuban culture finds its clearest expression in the nation’s love of music. Famous for its fluid form of salsa and the son rhythms popularised by the Cuban band Buena Vista Social Club, the island has become a hotbed of musical and dance talent. Displaying its legendary past proudly in the streets, you’ll be enchanted by

the abounding architectural heritage and thriving art scene. Around every corner, see walls splashed with propaganda depicting Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, as well as slogans celebrating the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Progression is visible everywhere alongside the decay, giving the country a rare and unique perspective unlike anywhere else in the world.

Old School Havana

Take a step back in time as you explore the capital city, Havana. Famed for its stunning buildings, festival atmosphere and historical memorials to revolutionaries, the city is a must-see for a multitude of reasons. Synonymous with some of the greatest literary figures that found solace here, including Ernest Hemingway and Graham Greene, Havana is a hub for artists and musicians alike. Head to Habana Vieja, the oldest part of the city, where you can wander intriguing streets, replete with art deco, neoclassic and colonial baroque architecture. Old Havana is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site, which comes as no surprise considering the plethora of cultural and artistic offerings. Two of the most famous are Museo de la Revolución and Museo Nacional de Belles Artes.

best exemplifies its colourful cultural melting pot. The fusion of African and Iberian cultures have sparked creative magic on the island, producing irresistible dance styles such as son, salsa, mambo, rumba and timba. Music moves Cuba in a spiritual and physical sense, and dancing is strongly embedded in the culture. Santiago de Cuba is a hot destination for dance lovers. The city’s distinctive Afro-Cuban cultural influences are on display during July’s Carnival — an unforgettable extravaganza with drum-beating parades featuring colourful costumes and son dancing, a precursor to salsa. However, you can sample the sultry hip-swaying nightlife at any time of year. To enhance the experience, consider taking salsa lessons with a local teacher!

Honeymoon Activities

Vintage Havana, Hemingway haunts, live salsa music and inviting sapphire shores — where in the world could top that for a honeymoon? Cruise along Malecón in a classic 1950’s Cadillac and glide past the capital’s monumental buildings. When it’s time for lunch, pay a visit to one of the city’s exclusive restaurants, such as La Guarida, or Café Laurent with its alfresco penthouse dining. As the days draw to a close, you will witness Cuban nightlife just waking up. Party like a local, allowing the cuba libres to flow and irresistible salsa beats to sweep you off your feet. Spontaneous live music is the norm and a pounding Afro-Cuban rumba is the hypnotic soundtrack of the country.

Sitting on the finest white sands of Esmeralda Beach on the outskirts of Guardalavaca, Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa offers pure luxury and award-winning hospitality services. Nestled in Bahia de Naranjo Natural Park, it faces one of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world. If you plan to get married here, this five-star resort offers a variety of wedding options to match your needs (melia.com).

Hotel Saratoga With a setting in a magnificent 1880s neo-classical building, Hotel Saratoga retains the charm of Old Cuba and is located just steps from the National Capitol building. Escape from the bustle of the streets to the hotel’s rooftop pool, before a pampering at the spa. Alternatively, hide away in a penthouse suite with an alfresco pool, and lounge on daybeds with bird’s-eye views of the ocean (hotel-saratoga).

Castaway Beaches

Varadero, famous for its warm cerulean waters, swaying palms and more than 20 kilometres of shimmering white sand, is considered one of the top beach destinations in the world. Less than two hours drive from Havana, you can find a wide selection of sophisticated leisure resorts and a wealth of watersports opportunities. One of our top choices is Playa Ancón, a prized ribbon of soft white sand stretching nearly three miles and often regarded as the finest beach on Cuba’s southern coastline. It’s guarded by the historic town of Trinidad, with its old-world charm, sprawling colonial palaces and plazas. For coconut palms and lashings of rum, Playa Guardalavaca situated in the northeastern Holguin Provinces of Cuba easily delivers on the Caribbean dream. Guardalavaca is perfect for active honeymooners seeking to explore the marine kingdom with mask and snorkel. Those in search of respite can sail to the eastern tail of the Jardines del Rey, long swathes of talcum-white sand and iridescent blue water are waiting to greet you and your darling. We recommend the most beautiful isle — Cayo Coco!

Unspoilt Naturaleza

Home to some of the richest flora and fauna in the world, sugarcanes, caves and crystal clear lagoons, Cuba offers a unique and varied landscape. To experience some of the island’s grandest scenery, take to the Sierra Maestra Mountains on a hike and enjoy camping out, forest treks and swimming under waterfalls. To the extreme east is the lush port of Baracoa, ‘The Town that Time Forgot’. Tread the same ground as Columbus, and add a touch of wild romance to your honeymoon. Trek through thick tropical rainforest, swim in natural waterfalls and stroll hand-inhand along empty, untamed beaches. Head out west to the stunning countryside of Viñales, where you can ride horseback alongside your true love, exploring the jawdropping landscape. This is also a fantastic location for rock climbing, mountain biking and cave exploration trips. Other opportunities include deep-sea fishing for swordfish, marlin and sharks. A visit to a local cigar factory is an absolute must!

nown to be one of the world’s leading all-inclusive resorts and winner of the World Travel Awards for a stunning twenty-two years in a row, I was intrigued to see what this record-breaking luxury resort company has to offer. Although the pearlescent shores and crystal clear waters of the Bahamas give an impression of a remoteness too hard to find, Sandals pride themselves in being ‘a paradise within reach’. This claim is one to which I can only concur — my journey to was effortless, and I even coupled it with a stopover in Miami to visit friends! Located on the largest tropical island of the seven hundred atolls strewn across the Atlantic, The Royal Bahamian is an hour flight direct from Miami and is also well connected via other US airports. What is more, couples can now travel with an exclusive Butler Service if they opt for toptier accommodations. With this luxury package, your journey will be attended to at every step of the way, from escorting you to an exclusive Club Butler Lounge at the airport, to arranging transfers to and from the hotel in

a magnificent Rolls Royce! You’ll be beginning your holiday from the moment you check in…

First Class Facilities

During my three-night stay at The Royal Bahamian, I was instantly enamoured by the range of amenities and activities available on site. The Penthouse Fitness Centre suite was particularly impressive with its extensive choice of aerobic classes and gym equipment nestled in the canopy of the resort complex. If the extraordinary view of the glistening horizon through seamless glass panes isn’t enough to motivate you, there are two large tempting swimming pools below, each with their own unique atmosphere. Perhaps recline with a tropical cocktail and listen to the soft rhythms of the DJ set by the Balmoral pool, or take a dip in blissful silence at the Windsor pool for a rejuvenating morning swim. Reflecting on my time spent at The Royal Bahamian, it is clear that Sandals value the small touches that bring a sense of home to your holiday. For me, it was these memorable details that brought memories of my experience back to the

UK, long after my stay. For example, at the Red Lane Spa, the in-house masseuses provided a charming Bahamian twist to traditional rituals. They recited a sweet poem about island life before proceeding with the superb massage using nourishing shea butter blended with antioxidant-rich oils. For brides and grooms-to-be, I was also informed of the diversity of treatments on offer, including a bridal facial, a specialised groom’s manicure and ‘Scents of Love’ couples massages, leaving you both radiant for your big day ahead. Given that I travelled to the resort with an avid scuba diver, the prospect of trialling the complimentary scuba day trip for resort guests could not go amiss. Upon her return, she relayed her underwater exploration of the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and exquisite rainbow of marine life as utterly mesmerising. Even with her wealth of experience in diving, she guaranteed that the organisation of the Sandals Scuba Tour was impeccable, with attentive and engaging instructors no matter what your familiarity level.

A Room with a View

A The Royal Bahamian, you can find solace in every corner of the resort. The elegantly designed bedrooms in the Windsor Tower are furnished with mahogany four-poster beds, lavish bathroom ensuites and a breathtaking vista of this island paradise. It is no surprise that the Royal family have resided here — this accommodation’s stately name not only reflects its regal interior, but also chimes with the excellent service that accompanies your stay. The Riverpool Suites are another secret dwelling place… these deluxe apartments run parallel to the waters edge, where you can dive in and out of your private pool at your leisure. Linger in the soothing shade, cool off from the Bahamian heat and immerse yourself in this secluded oasis.

Fine Dining at your Doorstep

The all-inclusive food service certainly catered for every taste; the ten speciality restaurants run by award-winning chefs left us spoilt for choice. We particularly enjoyed the

classical French cuisine at Baccarat surrounded by chic art nouveau décor and soft pendant lighting. This was followed by the soulful sounds of a live local singer, whose evening performance created an intimate starlit atmosphere for all guests. However, if you fancy dinner in complete seclusion, the friendly staff will willingly bring the gourmet menu selection directly to your sumptuous suite or spacious patio, as you watch the moon flicker in the reflection of your private pool.

A Whimsical Wedding Scene

With sparkling emerald seas and gleaming white sands as a backdrop, it goes without saying that this venue would be an idyllic wedding setting: from the enchanting flower garland archway on the beach under which brides and grooms-to-be can share their vows, to the crackling fire pits that glow as the sun melts into the blazing skyline. Sandals is sure to spark the romance or the triumphant party atmosphere that you desire from noon until night. The in-house wedding planners will also guide you flawlessly through the process and ensure that your day is as smooth and stress-free as can be. In fact, Sandals have recently launched their ‘Wedding Styler’, an online tool that allows you to customise your ceremony and find a theme that suits you and your partner. Select and blend themes from the bold pops of fuscia and vibrant statement furnishings inspired by passion, to the sophisticated simplicity of a beachfront scene inspired by sand and sea. Another brilliant option for guests to enjoy is the Royal Village, a small assembly of quaint cottages set apart from the centre of the resort. These beautiful guesthouses are available for group wedding bookings, creating a peaceful Eden for the bridal party to prepare undisturbed, and for wedding goers to retreat to after the celebrations. No wonder Sandals have coined the term ‘weddingmoon’, it is too tempting to stay longer after your marriage in this honeymoon haven, you’ll never want to leave! (www.sandals.co.uk) www.dwha.co.uk

Couples who book more guest rooms for their nuptials can also choose from a selection of ‘bells and whistles’ such as a welcome celebration event, a bridal shower or a rum and game night, so that they can make the whole week a celebration of their marriage. Whether it’s a couple getting married for the first time or the tenth time, we will make sure it will be the most memorable experience of their lives! BAHAMAS

A Royal Feast Inspired by

Luciano’s of Chicago Ristorante Luciano’s of Chicago opened for business in November 2004 on East Bay Street in Nassau, Bahamas. A favourite with locals and visitors alike, Luciano’s of Chicago is known for its picturesque location overlooking Nassau Harbour with stunning views of Bay Street Marina, Nassau Harbour, Paradise Island and the Atlantis Resort.

T

he restaurant, previously known as ‘Green Roofs’, was built in 1959 as the family residence of Sir Roland Symonette, The Bahamas’ first Premier. Sir Roland and Lady Margaret Symonette hosted many foreign dignitaries, including members of the Royal family. The residence remained the Symonette family home until it was converted into the current restaurant in 2004. Much of the formal décor in the residence, including floor length drapes and wall to wall carpeting were removed to remodel the premises as a Tuscan family seaside villa. It is decorated with antique wooden beams, wooden floors and open doors to take advantage of the breeze and the view. Guests can enjoy indoor or outdoor dining with wonderful views and take advantage of the perfect weather that The Bahamas has to offer. Luciano’s of Chicago is an Italian Restaurant that is heavily influenced by the fresh seafood available from the crystal clear Bahamian waters so, naturally, we would suggest our signature ‘Italy meets Island’ menu style for a Royal wedding feast.

DWHA || july / august

Wine and Dine in Luciano’s Style When choosing your wedding banquet, what could be better than Carribean and Italian cuisine? Mouthwatering sensations and a mix of original and traditional flavours are perfect for a fabulous feast.

Royal Menu First impressions are key, at the Royal banquet. For Hors’ d ’Oeuvres, Luciano’s would keep it Bahamian and feature fresh Conch, which is a Bahamian fixation bordering on obsession:

Hors’ d‘Oeuvres Conch Cakes with Calypso Sauce Curried Coconut Conch Chowder Shots garnished with Toasted Coconut Native Yellow Grits Cake topped with Bahamian Lobster, Avocado, Mango and Cilantro Ceviche Mini Arancine (Italian Risotto Balls) stuffed with Spicy Minced Hog Snapper

The Dinner Menu main course would draw influences from Bahamian and Italian cuisine to include:

Dinner Menu

Locally Grown Baby Beet Carpaccio with Goat Cheese, Candied Pistachio Nuts, Andros Amish Honey and Sour Orange Vinaigrette topped with local Micro Greens, Burrata and candied Sour Orange Peel Tagliatelle tossed with Bahamian Stone Crab, Bird Pepper, Lemon Peel and Asparagus with Lemon Cream Sauce Pan Roasted Nassau Grouper with Honey Habanera Mojo on a bed of White Sweet Potato and Vanilla Puree Aged Grilled Rib Eye Steak with Shallot Bacardi Anejo Rum Reduction, Spiny Lobster Cake, Creamed Kale with Pecorino Cheese and Prosciutto and Pan Roasted Grape Tomatoes with fresh Basil and Cracked Pepper

Dessert Menu Mini White Chocolate and Guava Lava Cake with Guava Rum Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream; Mango Cheesecake with Ginger Snap Crust, Candied Ginger and Key Lime Syrup; Chocolate Panna Cotta wih Strawberries, Balsamic Syrup and Cracked Pepper

To toast to the Royal occasion, Luciano’s would feature wines from our list to accompany this menu:

P&O work with many celebrity chefs, including Marco Pierre White

As a first time cruiser in my early twenties, I may not fit into the demographic that most associate with cruising. Yet as I soon discover, a cruise is only as predictable as you want it to be. Being an avid traveller, I jumped at the opportunity to visit five different countries in ten days. It’s an adventure without the hassle of airports, without lugging suitcases to various hotels, and without unexpected costs popping up throughout the day. Upon arrival at Southampton docks, our bags are taken off our hands moments after stepping out of the car. Check-in speedily occurs and before we know it, we’re whisked off to our balcony cabin where our luggage magically appears outside the door. In almost no time, we’re sipping a glass of bubbly on deck for the sail away party, waving away the UK and its gloomy weather. If this were a flight, we’d likely still be waiting in the departures lounge. I am traveling aboard the mid-sized ship of Aurora with P&O, cruising around Europe to visit some of the most festive Christmas markets around. In addition to my excitement at

visiting these cities, the ship itself is host to a wide range of activities throughout the day and night. We soon discover The Horizon newspaper, delivered to our cabin daily and detailing all events happening on board the ship. After an evening at the theatre, or dancing to a jazz band in Carmen’s, we eagerly anticipate scanning the timetable and making plans for the following day.

Tickle Your Tastebuds

P&O is particularly famed for its superb gastronomical reputation. If one thing is certain, you won’t go hungry. Eating is a large part of cruise life, and I find myself eagerly awaiting each meal. No matter the time of day, there is always somewhere open for a meal or snack. You’ll be spoilt for choice with restaurants to choose from, with over five places to dine on board. For your evening meal, the two main restaurants offer either Club Dining (same time and table each day), or Freedom Dining (flexible time and no fixed seating), allowing you the choice of a routine that works best for you. However, if you want to treat yourselves to a romantic meal, or simply fancy a change of venue, the select dining options are highly recommended and very impressive. With menus especially curated by celebrity chefs, you know you’re in for a treat. The Beachhouse provides a fun and informal space that serves a casual menu of grills and seafood — upon my visit, I indulged on nachos and a pulled pork sub, and I can confirm, the portion

Atul’s signature plate features three curries, Tamarind Salmon, Saffron Chicken Korma, and Lamb Rogan Josh. Each brings its own taste to the dish and I struggle to decide which one I prefer!

Amsterdam, the Netherlands Historic canals, unique museums and the red-light district are just some of the draws that make Amsterdam one of a kind. Explore by foot or hop on a bike.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges

Getting dressed up is also part of cruising culture, and the famous black tie nights are an affair to remember. Across our ten-day adventure, we experienced three of these evenings, one with a James Bond theme and prizes to be won at the casino. There is something quite magical about seeing guests dressed to the nines as they wander around the ship, heading towards their evening entertainment. Ball gowns brush across the carpets and tuxedos are abundant on every deck; five course gala menus by Marco Pierre White are served, and bars

are buzzing for the occasion. In fact, Masquerade — the late night music venue — is particularly frequented on black tie event nights where glamorous couples take to the dance floor together and the DJ welcomes requests. Even on non-themed evenings, the bars provide a welcoming atmosphere. The variety of ambiences in each means there is something for everyone to enjoy. Sip on a signature cocktail in The Crow’s Nest, overlooking a panoramic view of the ocean, or sit back with a pint in the pub-like Champions’ Bar. From quizzes and theatre performances, to dance classes and sports, the bounding list of entertainment on offer is outstanding. However, a fast-paced, jam-packed holiday isn’t for everyone. For as many fun-filled activities that are provided, there are equally as many options for chill time, seclusion or relaxation. The library offers a quiet space for reading or borrowing books, whilst watercolour art classes are a perfect way to unwind. The Oasis spa is a passenger favourite, and with discounts and special offers available throughout the trip, make sure to keep eye out! Choose from manicures, pedicures, massages and more. Pamper yourself for a black tie night, or simply because you deserve it. Ultimately, cruising is about freedom. The freedom to easily travel to multiple destinations, to participate in the activities

you choose and to dine where and when you want. You’re even able to bring your own bottle of bubbly on board!

Weddings at Sea

Tying the knot at sea is not only possible, but also couldn’t be simpler! From the moment you step on board, your own personal wedding coordinator is there to assist. Flowers and champagne await you in your room and your honeymoon can begin from the moment you say ‘I do!’. Perks include onboard spending money, up to three complimentary cabins for the wedding party, and a champagne breakfast in bed.

SAINT LUCIA From champagne sunsets to the sapphire Caribbean Sea, surrender to the ultimate honeymoon haven on the sensational island of Saint Lucia

T

reat yourself to the romantic escape of a lifetime, with a visit to Saint Lucia, a dazzling gem on the Eastern side of the Caribbean. The Atlantic Ocean kisses its sandy shores, while the dramatically tapered mountains stand proudly alongside the volcanic coves, which are kept quiet by the lulling waves of the calm Caribbean Sea. If you have set your heart on a tropical beach wedding with lush natural beauty, Saint Lucia is well-worth consideration. Verdant natural surroundings and a seductive Creole heritage has garnered this jewel as a fabulous honeymoon hotspot, with plenty of opportunities for intimate moments and actionpacked adventures. Saint Lucia is quite simply a backdrop of splendour, for your wedding or honeymoon, whenever you decide to tie the knot.

Sugar & spice

Step into a beautiful blend of cultures found in Saint Lucia and experience the vibrant influences from Africa, France, and England. This melting pot provides a colourful fusion that draws visitors into its arms. When it comes to tasting the culture, dive straight into the wondrous dishes on offer. A delectable blend derived from the island’s various cultures will have you in a mouth-watering trance. If you’re intending to tie the not in Saint Lucia and are in need of a caterer, look no further than Orlando’s Restaurant & Bar. Orlando uses only the freshest local fish and meat to create influential and flavourful dishes (orlandosrestaurantstl.com).

Rhythm of passion

Part of the pleasure of visiting the Caribbean is the chance to hear the distinctive calypso music played

on traditional steel drums. However, Saint Lucia’s music scene expands much wider, encompassing everything from classical music, orchestra and jazz to harmonious choir singing. Wherever you hear music on the island, whether it’s a formal concert or street party, you’ll find people swaying their hips, stamping their feet and jamming to the vibes. Music is part of Saint Lucia’s social fabric and the natives love to dance the merengue, samba, reggae, bomba and conga.

Things to do

Worthy of a stop is the capital city — Castries, offering the vibrant Caribbean flair of authentic restaurants and bars, this palm-fringed port is a treasure trove. One of its best features is the soaring Morne Fortune, or the ‘Hill of Good Luck’, once a key battle ground and fortress built by the French and British. Hand-inhand with your spouse, explore the heart of the city and its culture as your meander through the bustling Castries market where the stalls creak under the weight of the island’s exotic produce! Jump into Saint Lucia’s incredibly rich past with a visit to Pigeon Island National Park which can be reached by water taxi, a romantic boat trip or idyllic stroll over the sandy causeway. This isle was home to the French buccaneer François Le Clerc, also known as ‘Peg Leg’. The island was later fortified by the British and today you and your true love can explore the remains of Fort Rodney while enjoying panoramic vistas of the spectacular coastlines and rolling hills. Whether you want to explore the island’s museum, historic relics, stroll through the winding paths, or enjoy a picnic on a sandy cove, it all awaits you in splendid Saint Lucia.

DESTINATIONS Awe-inspiring wonders

The real jewels of this magical island are found on the south west shore towering over the town of Soufrière (French for Sulfur), home to the only drivein volcano in the world! The majestic Pitons are the most photographed landmark on the island and attracts thousands of visitors as it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Rising dramatically from the coastline and dense forest that surrounds, this is a nature trail for avid adventurers. Petit Piton is the smaller of the two and a fantastic climb, but a glance at its steep slopes will tell you it’s no walk in the park, especially in the tropical heat. However, if you’re an experienced hiker, your ascent to the 2461 ft (739m) summit will reward you with magnificent views of the turquoise sea and emerald coastline. For an exciting and memorable day trip with your sweetheart, head to the Sulphur Springs. There is a stream running through the crater, and hot springs bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. These bathing pools are blessed with volcanic minerals and reputed to have therapeutic properties, making it the perfect spot for a bathing detox. You may not like the smell coming from the spring, or stand the heat for long, but your skin will thank you after a quick dip! A visit to the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens is an excellent way to enjoy the beauty and sultry warmth of the tropics as you marvel at the diversity of exotic flowers and plant life. This is a wonderful chance to soak up the peaceful romance as you take in the alluring and abounding natural beauty around you.

Where to stay Marigot Bay Resort and Marina Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia is the award-winning luxury hotel Marigot Bay Resort and Marina. The authentic welcoming, lavish facilities and fine dining restaurants, make this the ideal destination for your honeymoon getaway. FOREIGN GUIDELINES, RULES AND ESSENTIALS

H

ere is DWHA’s at-a-glance-style checklist for all of the required and advised documentation you’ll need for your destination wedding. We have put together details on a hand-picked list of unusual locations around the world so that you’re in the know and are ready to start sending out those ‘Save The Date’ cards. However far off the beaten track you roam, here you’ll find up-to-date information tailored to each country on key areas. These include medical and vaccination advice, flight times and legal requirements. This section provides guidance on whether your marriage can take place in the country of your choice, and, importantly, whether it will be valid in British and international law. Remember, rock royalty Mick Jagger overlooked a technicality at his Hindu wedding to Jerry Hall in Bali — the union was not actually legally recognised in this country. With the help of your guide, you can start to gather all of the relevant paperwork. You may decide to employ a destinationwedding planner, who is either based here or in the country you are marrying in. A reputable planner will advise you on all the paperwork you need to ensure your marriage is legal for a one-off fee starting around £200. Other vital considerations include visa requirements and residency. Residency refers to the number of days or house you are required to reside in the country before your wedding ceremony. It can vary from no

residency required, to a number of months. Residency is not to be confused with ‘waiting period’. This refers to the time period between notifying the church/town hall/venue of your intention to marry, and the ceremony taking place. ‘Know Before You Go’ will equip you with all the essential facts you need to start planning for the most important journey of your life. We compiled this guide by doing direct research with the embassies of the countries included in this section. With a little planning, you and your groom could soon be jetting off and enjoying the wedding of your dreams!

This section should be treated as a guide, rather than definitive legal advice. Marriage laws are subject to change. This guide assumes that both parties in the couple are British or European citizens.
