Parisian Charm in Normandy

This intimate editorial shoot aims to recreate a contemporary yet elegant ambience with city tones in an idyllic chateau in the countryside…

The choice of venue was immediate, Chateau de Courtomer. Boasting history and character, it’s a charming location with a multifaceted facade which changes colour as the sun reflects on the incredible stones. Often used as a more romantic backdrop, we wanted to highlight a further aspect of the Chateau by showing couples that they can still achieve a fashionable and trendy look, in a historical and tranquil landmark. To create this atmosphere, it was important to select a great team, starting with the photographer. Masha is a fantastic storyteller through her photography. Her approach is emotive, and she is able to gift every photo with a timeless elegance and editorial aesthetic. Once the colour palette was decided, everything else fell into place, naturally. The incredible suppliers involved were able to bring to life the different textures that Chateau de Courtomer offers, through their art. Slim lines and geometrical shapes were the choices for the bridal look, beautifully crafted by Rachel, our jeweller, and Deborah, the bridal designer,

encased in sophisticated hair and make-by the talented Nancy and timeless personalised veils by Rebecca. After the ceremony conducted expertly by Natalie, the couple headed over to the Orangerie, once ‘for wintering over precious lemon trees and tropical plants’ now offers an elegant space and the inspiration for the shoot. There we placed the dinner table, where silver and glass reigned supreme, and stationery by Ashley and the cake by Margaret fully captured this magical space by replicating the same texture of the walls, as well as the hexagonal shape of the flooring. The weather was our friend, the sun was shining through the beautiful tall glass doors, overlooking a curated garden, until the magic of the golden hour hugged us all to mark the end of a fantastic day.

Alina & Alejandro escaped to Spain and celebrated their love under the sun… We married on October 5th 2021. We wanted to have a warm, summery elopement but didn’t want to deal with excruciating heat or crowds of tourists, so the shoulder season sounded perfect. Also, it was a Tuesday, so we fully enjoyed the city without the chaos. Coincidentally it happened to be the same date on which, two years before, Alina got on a plane for her sabbatical, a trip where the two of us met and fell in love. So, on that day, 2 years ago, a life-changing trip began for both of us. Spain was a meeting point of our cultures. I grew up by the beach in Peru and Alina is a city girl from Estonia. We thought Barcelona would be the perfect place to celebrate our nuptials. This Spanish city has been close to our hearts due to its colours, energy, and sunshine. When we decided on Barcelona, Palau de la Música Catalana came to mind. Its balcony happened to have all those elements we wanted for our celebration and even more. We didn’t have a specific theme but we wanted to capture the feeling of travelling, exploring, and bonding. We met right before COVID shook the world and our relationship grew and matured during lockdown, thus celebrating our love in an intimate atmosphere felt the most natural thing to do. That’s why we decided to elope to Barcelona and recite our vows there. Since we were getting married in beautiful Spain, we opted on spending our honeymoon there as well. We extended our stay in the little B&B we booked in

Barcelona, and then we headed to Andalucia. Since it was just the two of us, we didn’t feel stressed at all – even when our celebrant got stuck in traffic and taking photos took a bit longer than expected. Everything was exactly as we hoped - it was our day that we planned spontaneously as we pleased, and it was perfect with all its imperfections. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without our wedding planner Valentina from The Stars Inside, who made our vision a reality, and our photographer Olya Kobruseva. It was so emotional. We both had to wipe our tears more than once, but we also shared lots of laughter. Our outfits reflected who we are in our day-to-day lives. They were airy and comfortable enough that we danced through the streets in them! We actually danced to “El Ritmo de mi Corazon” by Gian Marco and Grupo 5, in the park, in front of La Sagrada Familia. Casual passers-by and other Barcelona visitors were our spectators. It felt so good to be so free, and it was fun to share our love with others. My suit was festive, light and summery. I tried it on and loved it - I didn’t have to think twice about it. Alina didn’t want to spend a lot on an elopement dress so she turned to AliExpress for help. She managed to save money on her dress and the money we saved, we invested in the jewellery Alina loved.

We married on August 7, 2022, on a romantic and warm summer day. We chose this date because this is the most joyful time of year. Flowers are in full bloom, the weather is great for being outdoors, and everyone is ready to travel somewhere fun. We had always envisioned a destination wedding, to share our international upbringing, and love of travelling with our family and closest friends. We chose Italy because geographically, it was central for our guests coming from all over Asia, North America, and Europe. Italy is also rich in art, music, history, and certainly cuisine. We landed on Lake Como because of its romantic scenery and picturesque views set against the dramatic foothills of the Alps, which made for the perfect wedding setting. (And we secretly hoped for a wedding as beautiful as John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s Lake Como wedding!) The moment we visited Villa Erba, we were overcome by emotion and knew the search for our fairytale wedding venue had ended. Nestled alongside George Clooney’s L’Oleandra mansion, Villa Erba is one of the most iconic and beautiful estates on the shores of Lake Como. Our wedding venue dreams had come true! We had 101 guests at our wedding. We wanted our wedding weekend experience to be more intimate and personal, bringing together our nearest and dearest. It was important for us to create meaningful memories with everyone in attendance, who travelled to be there with us on our special day. Our wedding planners, Sally and her on-the-ground team in Italy, were our heroes from the start of the planning process. After the initial thrill of our engagement, we took time to reflect on what was important to us - what our values and priorities were for the wedding day, and the memories we hoped to create for our family and friends in celebrating our love for each other. Then the planning started. Sally and her team guided us through each step of planning a destination wedding – all the venue tours, vendor meetings, and mood boarding - and helped bring our vision to life! We certainly could not have done this without them. Juan and I love a fun night out on the town with friends, dancing the night away. So we had an idea for

a surprise flash mob - to have our friends join us on the dance floor after our first dance, break out into a flash mob, and delight all of our guests. We were excited to put this into action! We choreographed a fun, upbeat routine to our favourite dance song, Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.” And our dedicated friends showed up to the dance studio every week to learn the moves. These mid-week dance practices quickly turned into dance parties that we all looked forward to. And on the wedding day, our flash mob extraordinaire friends blew the crowd away! Our guests went nuts! They were beyond surprised, cheering joyfully and loving the performance. There were so many amazing emotions on the dance floor and in the audience, and we were so overjoyed to share this fun and unforgettable moment with everyone. We wanted to create an elegant and vibrant summer theme that matched the elevated elegance of Lake Como’s glitzy shores, and the grandeur of our iconic venue. Our floral designers, Riccardo and Barbara did just that! They framed our backdrop with regal marble pillars, resembling the architecture of Villa Erba’s historic facade. Each pillar overflowed with arrangements of dramatic pinks, blooming blushes and rich greens, to match the vibrance of the al fresco Italian garden. For the reception, we moved indoors – into a luxuriously decorated dining room of ceiling frescoes, chandeliers, and gilded decor. Every detail turned out perfectly and we have special memories to look back on for eternity.

hosted an intimate celebration on the Amalfi Coast... Jason romantically proposed in Venice on the quiet steps of San Giorgio Maggiore in 2017. When it came to our wedding, our love for Italy and sunsets prevailed, so we said “yes” to Positano as our wedding destination. We fell head over heels for this little jewel on the Amalfi Coast and especially for the iconic views from Hotel Marincanto’s terrace. It’s so breathtaking that we instantly knew it was the perfect venue for both of us. The weather conditions were extremely important for our wedding. We wanted warmth and sunshine to embrace our wedding day. Our only concern was the popularity of Positano, so we decided on a September date, in 2022, for our nuptials - a less busy period but just as incredible! On our wedding day, we were surrounded by all of our loved ones. We had 30 of our nearest and dearest there celebrating our big day, and we couldn’t have asked for more support during what is one of the most special days in someone’s life. I was really nervous on the day. It was a bit like when I used to prepare for my shows as a professional Irish dancer. However, my bridesmaid was amazing, and our photographer, Peggy from Maison Pestea, was a blessing throughout the day. She was more than a photographer, a best friend. When I walked down, and the wedding set-up opened up before my eyes, everything started to hit me. Then walking down the aisle at sunset with my dad made me feel emotional! I could feel how nervous he felt, we flew down the aisle but it was magical. Thanks to my dress, I left like a movie star for the day! The detachable wings really made me feel incredible walking down the aisle with my dad, and as the sun went down, my dress started to sparkle. It was not an easy task to find my dream dress, I must have tried on

Real Wedding about 30 dresses, and visited many stores before finding Made with Love Bridal via Instagram. Their styles were simply made for destination weddings. To make it my own, I was able to arrange the alterations with the wonderful team at Stiched Up Bridal in Warwickshire, giving it a more dramatic hemline and heart-shaped bust, making it my long-awaited dream wedding dress. Also, never underestimate your accessories! My chiffon wings and bridal hair accessories really gave a touch of my own personality and style. Our wedding was about bringing together our family and friends and creating special memories with all of them. To enhance our experience, I definitely think a live band made a difference - I’ll always cherish dancing to ‘Bongo Cha Cha Cha’ with my dad - he free styled and it was better than what we rehearsed. Our vintage car photo shoot was also unforgettable and so much fun. Everything was detailed so everyone could take home memories of their time in Positano - we also went dancing the night of our wedding and organised a day at the beach in Arienzo for our guests. We wanted every detail to scream Italy and the old-school classic Italian glamour set the tone for our beautiful wedding day - we couldn’t have asked for more!

eloped to a secluded Maldivian islet to mark their wedding anniversary… Our 10th wedding anniversary coincided with Covid lockdowns, so we weren’t able to celebrate as we’d hoped. With travel in full swing, we decided to celebrate our 12th anniversary by renewing our vows in the beautiful Maldives - our favourite place in the world. We live in a busy city, Dubai, which is full of skyscrapers and 16-lane highways – so when we heard about JA Manafaru’s location as the most remote resort in the Maldives, it really appealed, knowing that we could be alone on a beach without seaplanes and boats whizzing past. That sense of being in the real Maldives, utterly secluded, added to the magic of the whole experience. It was just the two of us. It was lovely to get ready together, something that we didn’t experience during our actual wedding. Being in a gorgeous over-water villa surrounded by the sparkling sea added to the romance. Watching colourful fish dart below the villa while wearing yards of tulle felt like an actual fairytale. JA Manafaru looked after everything for us. I was keen that the set-up harmonised with the natural beauty of the island. The aisle marked by coconut husks and the driftwood arch that they created were absolute perfection. The team provided everything from the bouquet to the photographer, all I did was pack a dress. It was heavenly! I really felt they understood us and the kind of aesthetic we love and delivered it flawlessly.

The sun was setting throughout the ceremony, and the team provided simple shell bracelets to exchange, which was a lovely gesture. We both felt so lucky to have each other and to be able to reconfirm our love in the most beautiful place on Earth. We both grew up by the coast in Sussex and live close to the sea in Dubai, so the ocean is really important to us. I can’t think of any setting more romantic than one of the most secluded islands in the Maldives. I wore a white gown from Revolve with a lace and satin bodice SUPPLIERS: top and layered tulle high-low skirt. We knew we wanted to get married outside of the UK so that meant looking at spring and summer for our wedding day. We didn’t have a set date in mind and were just keen to get the wheels in motion! Sadly, like many couples, our original date had to be postponed by a year due to the pandemic. However, it really was worth the wait for our dream wedding weekend. We had spoken to our wonderful wedding planners about the kind of wedding we had in mind. Somewhere that could accommodate every element of our three days to avoid excess travel to and from events, somewhere that could host quite a large wedding party, and somewhere that was breathtaking and magical. White Eden Weddings showed us a few places, and when we pulled up to Château de Tourreau, it was love at first sight! We didn’t have a number in mind when putting our guest list together. We knew there would be a lot of family and friends and, with a destination wedding, it was also very important to us that guests could make a holiday of it. This also meant including children and plus ones. We are both very much “the more the merrier” kind of people and wanted to be as inclusive as possible. We ended up with 120 guests across the three days of our wedding. It was meaningful to us that everyone was invited to every part of our wedding: the welcome dinner on the Friday, the wedding on the Saturday and the pool party brunch on Sunday. I thought I would feel nervous, but the overwhelming emotion was excitement. I was so lucky to have the most wonderful bridesmaids, who made the whole process fun. There was lots of singing and dancing as we all got ready. I also flew out my hairdresser from London, who has been styling my hair for years. Being surrounded by people who knew me well contributed to the relaxed atmosphere when getting ready. On each day of our wedding weekend, I did feel

the best I ever had. Walking down the aisle to Stuart was incredibly emotional. It was such a long aisle, and I just wanted to get to him as soon as I could, and seeing him beaming with tears in his eyes was one of the best moments of my life. Stuart wasn’t sure whether he could pull off a tuxedo with a cream jacket, but we are so glad he picked it in the end. It meant he looked extra-special too, and different from all the other guests. When it came to our wedding, I wasn’t leaving a single stone unturned. I took a whole week off work and went to every single bridal boutique in London I could find. When I turned up at Suzanne Neville, it was actually the atmosphere that initially made me think this is the place for me. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I ended up in there for hours. Suzanne Neville made two dresses for me: a slim-fit wedding dress that I wore to our welcome dinner and a strapless ball-gown style wedding dress for our wedding day. For my something blue, I chose a Monique Lhuillier dress to wear to our pool party brunch day. I have always loved her dresses so was so glad I got to incorporate one of her pieces into my wedding looks. It is cliché to say but I didn’t want to take any of my wedding dresses off! I felt so special and happy and the process of all the fittings and stylings leading up to wearing the dresses was also so wonderful that just being in the final products was emotional in itself. If I could wear them every day, I would! There were so many pinch-me moments. We both really loved how unique our ceremony was. Neither of us is particularly religious and so it meant a lot to us to be able to curate a completely personal ceremony with readings and songs that actually represented us. Hearing people sing Elton John all together during our ceremony was magical. Our firework display was also incredibly special. We kept this as a surprise for our guests and people were blown away when it started. We had never seen fireworks like this and couldn’t believe the scale of them. It felt like a dream. The best decision we ever made was getting married abroad and turning it into a three-day affair. Weddings go by so quickly and we really wanted to savour it for as long as we possibly could. By turning it into a holiday for our guests, it meant people really got to know one another and we had time to be with everyone across the three days. We had the best suppliers working with us and they created exactly what we had imagined. Our colour scheme was green and white with hints of gold and the décor was contemporary classic. The final outcome was more than anticipated.

Many planners will help you with the language barrier, and they will have a list of venues to contact to match your wants. It’s important to find a wedding venue before you move forward with the rest of the planning.

French weddings are filled with whimsical beauty and the exuberant enjoyment of life, otherwise known as ‘Joie de Vivre’. Whether you decide to host your reception in a chic city hotel or a magnificent chateau in a rural wine region, your romantic soirée is bound to be a showstopping event. For a touch of sweetness, the wedding cake is typically replaced with a Croquembouche, a dessert consisting of choux pastry puffs piled into a cone and bound with threads of caramel. Another tradition here is to toast your newly married life with an opulent Champagne tower. Simply arrange your coupes into a pyramid and fill the topmost glass to the brim, letting it spill over into the lower layers - it makes a magical photo opportunity too!

Germany

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Germany, you are bound to have a smashing time (quite literally!) A Polterabend takes place the night before the wedding when friends and family gather to break piles of porcelain to chase away evil spirits and bring good luck to the couple. When the wedding day arrives, a symbolic candle gifted by the bride’s mother is lit and it is relit at special occasions throughout their lives as a reminder of their special bond. A third and most curious German wedding custom is sawing a tree trunk after the ceremony. The act of cutting through the wood represents the first obstacle that the newlyweds must overcome, showing the strength of working together as a team.

Italian weddings are the epitome of La Dolce Vita or ‘the sweet life’. Customarily, couples exit from the ceremony to a shower of confetti, but here it’s not petals or paper, it’s made of rice to symbolise fertility! Wedding favours in Italy are called bonbonniere and the most popular gift is a bag of sugared almonds, typically given in bunches of five, as odd numbers cannot be divided, just like the unbreakable bond of the newlyweds. Instead of a multi-tiered wedding cake, many Italians opt for Millefoglie, a light and delicious puff pastry layered with custard cream and fresh fruit - buon appetito!

Turkey

Speech traditions from around the World A great speech can be a wedding highlight; a chance to add personality, humour and poignancy to the day. Of course, around the world, speech traditions vary dramatically. Heidi Ellert-McDermott, the founder of Speechy and the author of The Modern Couple's Guide to Wedding Speeches, shares some of the wedding speech traditions she’s spotted from around the world. Get inspired… LAID-BACK CANADIAN CHARM A sweet part of the wedding toast is the Canadian tradition of newlyweds citing an ideal couple who inspires their marriage goals or who has been particularly significant in their lives. This may be someone who’s taught them something profound about relationships or just demonstrated that a happy marriage can last a lifetime. MARRYING BUSINESS & PLEASURE IN JAPAN The Japanese are known for their formal business culture, and weddings are run with a similar agenda. It’s not uncommon for the first speech to be given by the bride or groom’s boss before the thank yous from the newlyweds themselves. Very close friends may be invited to give a speech or performance, which often takes the form of a pre-recorded video. But it’s a highly organised affair – guests shouldn’t presume to take the mic unless invited to and rehearsing is a must to keep it slick.

SHARING THE LOVE, SCANDI STYLE There’s a definite ‘more the merrier’ vibe surrounding Swedish wedding speeches. A free for all where guests are encouraged to stand up and say a few words once the wedding party has kicked off the lineup. Siblings, relatives, and friends can share stories about the happy couple and offer good wishes and advice throughout the dinner. One thing to note if you’re about to be a guest at a Swedish wedding – it’s probably worth checking in advance whether the couple is going for this relaxed tradition before clearing your throat to give your two pence (krona) on marriage. GOOD VIBES ONLY AT AN INDIAN WEDDING Expect to hear a round of speeches from many different speakers at your average Indian wedding. Both the bride and groom’s parents will deliver a speech and encourage others to say a few words. Siblings give a toast and spring funny coming-of-age stories on the newlyweds, who in turn will often deliver their speech to one another, recounting the proposal story and the first date, and occasionally working together on a joint speech (a growing trend around the world). Indian weddings are big affairs, so these speeches can often seem like mini-TED talks, with mics, lighting and screens to match! Don’t be surprised if the heartfelt sentiment delivered has actually been written by a professional speechwriter.

LIFE AND LOVE INSIGHTS FROM A KENYAN AUNTIE Elders are deeply respected in African countries, and Auntie – the universally respected title for an important older female relative or powerful older woman – takes centre stage to give hot-blooded life lessons and humorous advice to the newly married couple. She will not pull any punches and the couple will be expected to listen closely. We love a woman’s voice being front and centre at a wedding. YOUR SPEECH, YOUR STYLE Whatever wedding speech traditions you take with you and whichever ones you choose to adopt from your wedding destination, make sure that your speaker lineup, toasts and speeches reflect, not only the style and location of your wedding, but you as a couple. In the South Nilandhe atoll, a private island resort fringed by dip-dye halos of coral beckons couples to unwind in barefoot luxury. Emily Williams shares why Sun Siyam Iru Veli should be the backdrop to your next romantic escape… “Welcome home” was the phrase that sang through the air as we stepped onto Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s oceanfront pontoon after landing in what can only be described as the smallest and sweetest seaplane airport in the world. A fanfare of Boduberu drums serenaded us over crystalline shores towards the Chemistry bar, where bright fuchsia pink lounge chairs dazzled against the aquamarine scenery and we drank fresh coconut water straight from the husk as a fitting toast to our arrival. From the get-go, the joyful, laid-back atmosphere set the tone for what was to be a very memorable few days at this Indian Ocean idyll. From initial impressions, I could tell that Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s stand-out quality was its intimate and remote location, accessed via a 40-minute seaplane ride over a string of pearlescent atolls. But given its compact size, the 125-suite castaway island never felt crowded as at all times there were poolside loungers free, empty hammocks swaying in the shallows, and long stretches of sand awaiting fresh footprints. The resort was small but seemingly spacious, likening it somewhat to a tropical Tardis. The sense of seclusion was ever-present, with lush botanical pathways that led us via the beach restaurants and bars towards the stilted huts that extended over the ocean like a mermaid’s tail. At our thatched Ocean Suite Villa with Pool, the white double doors opened into a coastalinspired interior, where anchor embellished cushions and palm leaf artwork decorated the plush king-size bed, with matching bedside trunks and knotted rope lamps tying in with the nautical theme. Slatted sliding doors led us through to a polished ensuite bathroom, where scalloped tiles gleamed like fish scales around the walk-in rain shower and the deep freestanding bathtub, a centrepiece that transformed into a cloud of petalstrewn bubbles during the romantic turndown service. Beyond the villa’s glass doors, it was all about the horizon views, with a decking area that doubled up as both a launch pad into the lagoon and a relaxing honeymoon hangout above sea level. Furnished with stylish striped loungers, a turquoise plunge pool and a ladder that descended directly

into the ocean, it was a private oasis to relax, rejuvenate and soak up the easygoing island vibe. And for the ultimate Instagrammable moment? We were in luck. The Romance Experience also included a floating breakfast in the luxury of the villa. Freshly prepared in a heart-shaped basket that hovered on the pool’s surface, it was a bucket list way to start the day. At Iru Veli, the 5-star all-inclusive package enables you to dine around the clock, with superb levels of service and food quality that stand apart from other larger resorts. Even the buffet-style eatery at Aqua Orange showed no sign of mass-produced cuisine; instead the carefully curated selection of dishes were often cooked right in front of us. The weekly Maldivianthemed night was my favourite, when the staff dressed in typical attire and introduced us to the authentic flavours of their local atolls, followed by a cultural show of singing, dancing and Boduberu drums. Other dining options across the resort include the Grouper Grill, a toesin-the-sand seafood restaurant where the catch of the day doesn’t get any fresher, and the Mediterranean outpost Roma, suspended over the gentle lapping of the waves. Here, we spent our first night sampling succulent steak tartare, savouring melt-in-the-mouth risotto and cracking through the caramelised layers of Crème Brûlée created by Italian chef Mauro Panebianco as part of Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s chef-in-residence series. It was impressive to see the resort connecting with global culinary talent to bring diverse menus from around the world to this far-flung pocket of paradise. Evenings at the resort ended with a signature cocktail at the adults-only Fresh Water bar, before crossing the boardwalk to our villa over the boundless aquarium where shoals fish darted through the shallows and reef sharks slipped between the soft beams of light. But for the ultimate nightime spectacle, the private cinema experience on the beach is not to be missed. With a bottle of Champagne, a fruit platter and a big bowl of popcorn to share, we watched in awe as the screening commenced in front of us under a blanket full of stars. It was a mesmerising few hours, watching a classic movie in a setting that felt like a film set of its own.
