Whether you opt for a countryside manor, a city hotel or a marquee under the stars, you must pick the perfect location to accommodate your style, guest count and all your wedding day requests, which could be; time availability, mobility access ramps, allowing pets, indoor space options in case of rain, and many more. Don’t choose a cake until you’ve made all your other major wedding style decisions. Every element of your wedding is curated to tell a story so make sure your cake design fits in with your venue, décor and styling before jumping into any decisions. Finalise your wedding cake between four to six months before your wedding date, this gives the designer time to work on elaborate designs and gets your date booked into that busy wedding season calendar! When it comes to flavours, make sure you choose something you like, but keep guests happy by dedicating one of your tiers to a crowd pleaser such as fruit cake or jam and buttercream. Match the cake height to the space by considering where the cake will be displayed in your venue. If it will be in an orangery or marquee, you might want to get a taller cake to make more of an impact. Ask your designer to insert dummy tiers to increase height but reduce weight and cost. Tie the way you display your cake into your theme, put it on a floral cake stand for an elegant afternoon tea inspired event or a wooden slice for a whimsical, woodland theme. When it comes to cake and portion size, liaise with your baker to make sure you have an appropriate cake to guest ratio, it’s good to have some left-over to share and enjoy over the next few days. Usually, your caterer or service staff will cut the cake for you, but the normal slice is a ‘finger’ size which is the height of the cake, and one inch wide and deep. Wedding cakes are not the most practical to store. As a general rule keep them in airtight containers in neutral temperatures out of direct sunlight. You can also freeze your cake to keep for a special occasion (first anniversary or christening), just make sure you wrap it in cling film and foil first for the best longevity!

HOW TO GIVE A KILLER WEDDING SPEECH
It's the moment your guests have been waiting for! Create a heartfelt speech with these top tips...
W
e have seen it all at Blame Her Ranch when it comes to wedding speeches….some are more unique than others. But let’s face it, giving a speech in front of 100 to 200 guests can be really daunting. So here are some tips on both flow and speech content that will make anyone a star. 1. OPEN WITH A STARTLING STATEMENT OR QUESTION. Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message. You'll lose them if you do this.
2. ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE. Concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel. This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience. 3. ZERO IN ONE TO THREE POINTS. A top guideline is to select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). The simple, succinct story or stories about the bride and groom will work best. This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused. 4. REHEARSE. THEN REHEARSE SOME MORE. The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be. A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often. 5. RECORD YOURSELF PRACTICING. Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing. It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify
distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um', 'uh', and 'like'." It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger. 6. LAY OFF THE BOOZE. Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favours. It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd. 7. LET NERVES WORK TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation. 8. BE YOURSELF. Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect. Keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments. 9. KEEP IT SHORT. The ideal length for a speech is three to five minutes, with five minutes being the absolute maximum you should speak for. That's it. 10. DON'T EMBARRASS THE NEWLYWEDS. It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor/bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience. It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you. WH WEDDINGSANDHONEYMOONSMAGAZINE.COM

The floral aromas of the lavender leap out of the photographs of this lilac dream of a shoot. The pastel blooms were reflected perfectly in the details scattered across their table for two, with roses, macarons and pearls adorning their iced cake. The bride worked in harmony with the surroundings, sporting a plunge, flowy gown and holding armfuls of wistful buds and foliage. How to make your wedding venue work for you? Charlotte Ricard-Quesada, Founder and Creative Director of La Fête, gives the scoop on how to scout for your dream venue...

W
hen you book your wedding venue, you obviously already have a vision in mind for your big day, but it all feels very different once you sit down and start planning the detailed look of your wedding day at the venue. There are so many ways to make your venue work for you, but the most important step is to start with a clear idea. Take your time to plan your vision and create a mood board. What are your colours, your theme, and overall feeling? Once you have your mood board, take a step back and place it alongside your venue. Do they harmoniously live together? Do they clash? Or is it simply you? Either way – it will work, you just need to make sure that the dosing of each element is done correctly so that nothing steals the show more than you and your partner on the big day! There are four main types of venues: 1. BLANK CANVAS: these venues are great if you have a very precise vision that you feel can't be recreated in an adorned space. There are more of these options now, and they are easily adaptable to any kind of vision you may have. The only downside is that these venues need much more budget to create the feeling you want. However, the sky is the limit – installations, florals, furniture, props – whatever you want!
2. VERY ORNATE & SET STYLE: these venues are great if you love a specific style through and through. They don’t need much décor added, and the furniture and florals used should be in harmony with the surroundings. There is often not enough space to clash styles. The only way I would recommend a clash here is if it’s a mansion house that has a classical style and you want to theme your wedding with a more modern and minimalistic twist, but the colour tones then need to be harmonious. 3. MODERN THROUGH & THROUGH: if modern is your style, then pick a venue that fits the bill, and continue that theme throughout your planning. There are ways to do modern in both a minimalistic or maximalist way so pick which way you want to go and make it work. Some more acidic colours or subdued hues work well especially in modern spaces too, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box. 4. THE BACKDROP IS EVERYTHING: If you have picked a venue because of where it is located (beach, views, mountains, etc.) then use that as your theme, whether it is loosely or heavily, but bring the outside in through colours, furniture, textures, and props. It will make the whole event feel very natural and have a great flow. Nothing is impossible (unless not allowed by the venue for practical, historical or legal purposes) but other than that – feel free to create your own magically unique space! la-fete.com @officiallafete

ROOFTOP ROMANCE After falling for each other in college, Payton and Olivia’s fairytale romance had the perfect proposal to go with it. But we’ll let them tell you the story: “We’d headed away to Fort Worth, Texas, to show our friends the city. When we arrived at the hotel, we were taken to the rooftop with a beautiful skyline view of the city. But it was empty, aside from a photographer whose photo I managed to get in the way of,” Olivia recalls. Little did Olivia know the photographer was there for them, as Payton pulled out a ring box and got down on one knee. “I said yes and 30 of our amazing friends joined us for cocktails at the beginning of a magical weekend in our favourite city,” Olivia grins.

AN ODE TO AUSTEN “We wanted to encourage our guests to wear black tie and I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen” explains the bride, “so when we visited our venue, I really saw that vision. But for our first visit there, the venue was still a vision too – no roof or walls yet! We put our trust in their design and we’re so glad we did.” Complementing the theme, the bride set out to channel a Regency-inspired style in the search for her dress. “Everyone told me they pictured me in a big sparkly ballgown, but I felt myself in an elegant and fitted timeless dress – ‘Ava’ by Vera Wang. My bustle was carefully layered to highlight the Italian macrame along the train and bodice.”

PARTY TIME Choosing their soundtrack as carefully as the aesthetic details, Olivia and Payton shared their first dance to ‘LOVE’ by Michael Buble. “We choreographed the dance and loved taking the classes together,” they reminisce. “Partway through, our brothers and family ran onto the dance floor to spell out love – it was hilarious!” As the night came to a close, it was ‘Bloom’ by Paper Kites that drew everyone together for a final spin on the dance floor. “It left such an impression on my husband that night that it still makes him teary to hear it to this day,” Olivia smiles. JET, SET, GO! After the wedding, the newlyweds jetted off to Puerto Vallarta at Vidanta, in Mexico. “It was so beautiful,” they gush. “We had a butler, a fantastic villa and amazing food. The estates gave us time to relax and enjoy every second with each other.” WH

POPPING THE QUESTION After his perfectly planned proposal with the help of Longleat's penguins went awry at the last moment, groom Ricky had to think on his feet when it came to surprising his future bride. “Instead, Rick took me to Combe Martin and proposed on the cliff beside the sea. We stayed in the bridal suite of Kentisbury Grange and ate lots of lovely food. He did tell me what his original plan had been, but as soon as I saw him on one knee, it wouldn’t have mattered where we were!” grins Emily.
“We wanted candid photos and our photographer didn’t disappoint!”
PERFECT TIMING With both the bride’s birthday and the anniversary of their engagement falling in October, it felt like the natural choice when it came to setting their wedding date too. “I’d been to an evening do at Haselbury Mill before and thought to myself it would be the perfect venue if we ever got married,” reveals Emily. “Rick suggested I booked a viewing so he could see it too and we were both on the same page. We wanted a wedding where we’d all be in the same space, where it would be one big party. Haselbury Mill was perfect and had lots of accommodation too.” FINDING THE ONE Having passed by a bridal boutique in her hometown many times, Emily felt it was only right to begin her search for the dress there. “I took my mum and went without the intention of finding anything necessarily. I tried on five or six different styles before landing on my Maggie Sottero

dress, which I then wore in the boutique for 40 minutes! Comfort was key and it was the one. Nothing feels quite like wearing your wedding dress – I was elegant, comfortable and felt like a bride.” Emily’s bridesmaids joined her in dusty blue skirts and nude embellished tops, teamed with rose gold heels. The groom and his groomsmen complemented the look in Ted Baker blue threepieces, grey waistcoats and blue ties. BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL The couple decorated their country venue with a palette of blue, white and rose gold. “We hired a flower wall and white blossom trees and I roped in my family to help collect blue glass items – empty glass bottle vases, tea light holders, anything we could find. I used them all through the venue on tabletops and lining the aisle. We had floating candles, blue flowers and gypsophila, accented with rose gold for the wire on our bouquets and the frame for the table plan.

Dancing in the Rain SEVILLE SETTING The term bridal shower took on a very literal meaning for this couple, with rain falling on their March wedding day in Seville for the first time in 15 years! “Fortunately, the saying goes in Spanish that a wet bride is a lucky bride,” Charlotte smiles, not letting the weather dampen any of the excitement of their dream day. “I was nervous to begin with on our wedding morning, but when the rain arrived, I just let go and embraced it. It meant I was able to enjoy the day even more!” AISLE STYLE Bespoke was the buzzword for both bride and groom when it came to their wedding day wardrobes. “Antonio wore a bespoke, tailor-made emerald tuxedo jacket with black tuxedo trousers. His groomsmen wore black, with ruby bow-ties.” And for the bride? “I had my dress made in India by an amazing studio out there. We co-designed and created my dress and the embroideries are directly inspired by tiles in the Casa Pilatos. I wanted a blend of Flamenco and bridal style. Later on, I 00 94

Real Weddings “My Manolo Blahnik heels were so comfortable I wore them all night long!” changed into a bespoke jumpsuit made as a gift by my friend Nabel Martins, a Venezuelan designer. It felt amazing and so special.” JEWEL IN THE CROWN Seeking florals that would bridge the gap between winter and spring, the couple opted for a jewel-inspired palette for their celebrations. “They blended with the seasons and complemented our venue’s beautiful glazed tile walls. As our venue is a museum, planning had its challenges. I’m a wedding planner myself, but enlisting the help of a dedicated planner for our own wedding meant I could just relax and enjoy the day knowing any surprises on the day were in hand, it was worth every penny.” The couple opted for a love bird and ribbon-adorned cake in soft blues, alongside a decadent dessert table so guests could refuel for the dance floor. DANCE, DANCE Charlotte and Antonio opened the dance floor with a waltz they had been practising for months, before a husband and wife DJ duo took over. “They had us dancing for hours! As a multicultural crowd, we were keen for them to keep the song choices international with hints from our various backgrounds, as well as some nostalgic tunes. THE FAIRYTALE BEGINS After a lifelong love of castles, you could call it fate that a castle would be where this bride and her husband chose to tie the knot. “The moment we arrived to look around Berkeley Castle we knew it was the one. It’s a large venue, but it feels so intimate. We invited 130 guests to join us for the day.” But, despite the large-scale affair, the bride-tobe was totally relaxed when her wedding morning arrived. “In fact, my bridesmaid Clare and I did some yoga in the garden first thing, then we popped open the bubbly as the pampering began!” FINDING THE ONE Choosing her dream dress also came with a story to tell, as Victoria set her heart on a gown that wasn’t even on the boutique’s rails: “I tried on so many dresses and none of them felt like me. In the end, I was looking through designs in a boutique’s basement when I found a style I liked. But it was weathered! I loved the vintage feel and the boutique referred me to Paul Moreland who recreated my dress – he made the process so relaxing and fun.” The bride teamed her gown with Jimmy Choos for their best day ever. THE I DOS Victoria walked down the aisle to the waiting arms of David to a beautiful rendition of ‘Time after Time’, performed live by James Edgar.

“As we walked out together as husband and wife, James sang Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’ in memory of David’s mum.” Continuing the musical theme, the couple handed over their evening entertainment to Thrill Collins. “What a band!” they gush. “They’re not your typical wedding band and bring so much character and originality. Spending a bit more to source a band we loved was the best decision we made.” TWIN-CENTRE TRAVELS After tying the knot, the bride and groom hit the road to England’s scenic south west, exploring the stunning coastline of Devon and Cornwall. “The Cary Arms and The Scarlet were both stand-out hotels,” they grin. “We then went to the Maldives in November and stayed at Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli. It was the best trip I’ve ever been on!” WH

Flawless Fairytale INSTA-NT ATTRACTION When Alex and Mark set out to find their dream wedding venue, little did they know they’d find it via their phones! “We saw our venue on Instagram shortly after it opened. We’d visited many venues by that point, but nothing compared to Le Petit Chateau. We fell in love with the gardens, it was like being transported to the Mediterranean. There was nothing about the venue we didn’t love, so that made the decision for us,” the couple smile. BIG DAY BEAUTY The bride spent the night before her wedding in the peace and privacy of the venue’s bridal suite with her best girls around her. “I loved being with all my bridesmaids and felt excited with a few nerves while we got ready. Once I had my dress on I certainly felt like a bride. It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe, but will last a lifetime. My dress was the very last one I tried on at the boutique.”

THE MUSIC OF LOVE “We’d always wanted to have an acoustic singer for the entire day,” explains Alex. “We spent months researching and decided on David Aryn – we loved how versatile his voice was. Walking down the aisle and seeing everyone together in the same room was so overwhelming, knowing we had all day to celebrate together.” ESCAPE TO THE CHATEAU After a love-at-first-sight moment for this couple at their venue, it certainly delivered on the fairytale experience on the big day. “It was truly wonderful – the aesthetics, the staff, the level of service – it was all completely faultless. I felt overwhelmed at points,” Alex reveals, “but the wedding coordinator and master of ceremonies were so reassuring and timed everything to perfection. Driving down the winding lanes of Salcombe town, glimpsing the calm waters on the approach to the hotel with a flawless reputation, we knew we were in for a treat! We were staying in an Estuary View room with a romantic Juliette Balcony. Decorated in calming coastal colours with nautical stripes and modern furnishings, walking into the room, you get a picture-perfect view of the waters below. Picture this: waking up from a restful sleep enveloped in luxury Egyptian cotton bedsheets to calming blue views of the estuary and your new spouse making you a coffee at the Nespresso Coffee Machine. It’s the ideal start to the day and married life! After checking in, the sun was out so we decided to wander to the terrace and find a spot on the upper sundeck to soak up the rays. During our stay, there was a Rowing Club Regatta so we watched the boat races from the terrace and retreated to the comfort of our room when the sun started to set. Elegant decanters of Gin and Sherry are placed in each of the rooms for guests to help themselves. We enjoyed a drink, watching the last of the races, before following our stomachs to The Jetty for dinner. Serving a selection of delicious seafood and British favourites, The Jetty boasts panoramic views of the estuary. The Surf and Turf Platter was such a treat! With a focus on locally grown produce and wild-caught seafood, Head Chef, John Pollard, has designed a menu of traditional favourites with a contemporary twist. While away a couple of hours in the hotel’s spa, with a heated pool, hydrotherapy pool, steam room and sauna. Curtain off your day bed to enjoy some peace after unwinding with a Temple Spa treatment from one of the hotel’s practised therapists.

A five-minute drive out of Bath city centre and we were meandering up the tree-lined driveway to the honey-coloured Georgian mansion that is Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel. This hidden gem is situated in seven-acres of private gardens, with views stretching towards the city for the ultimate getaway. With views across the city or over the manicured gardens, guests are treated to exceptional comfort and luxury in the hotel's 130 bedrooms and suites. We enjoyed a long romantic soak in the bath with Elemis toiletries, with everything you could ever need at your fingertips. After a relaxing soak, visit the award-winning Vellore dining room to discover a dinner menu filled with the best seasonal ingredients that offer a fusion of traditional and modern English cooking. The next day, after a day of sightseeing in the historic city and shopping until we dropped in the city centre, we switched off and relaxed in the hotels 5-star spa. Enjoy an alfresco dip in the outdoor hydrotherapy pool or have one of the therapists work their magic with an ELEMIS spa treatment. They specialise in moulding your treatment to your own skin and needs for a personalised experience, we can’t recommend them enough! One of my personal highlights was the quintessentially British tradition that is afternoon tea, and the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel did not disappoint! We decided to soak up the sunshine and take tea on the terrace as we indulged in a decadent display of dainty finger sandwiches, homemade scones and even a flute of sparkling wine. We migrated into the cosy drawing room as the afternoon waned on and got snug together as we reminisced on our wedding memories together. For your own wedding, Bath Spa Hotel is a truly special location, we spotted so many stunning backdrops such as the fountains and grotto as we ventured round the venue, perfect for those all important photographs. Recent changes in the law now allow anyone to get married anywhere on the island, whether that be a beach, castle or boat. This new law also allows non-residents to exchange vows on the island of Guernsey, whether that is a religious or civil ceremony. If you would like a religious ceremony you will need to contact the relevant religious official, or a civil ceremony can be administered by a Deputy Registrar or Authorised Civil Celebrant, who operate in a private capacity. Just make sure you give notice through the Royal Court up to 12 months before the date.

It has a harbour-side setting and spectacular sea views.
