EDITOR'S NOTES

B

ritish novelist H.G. Wells, who gave us such classics as War of the Worlds and Island of Doctor Moreau, may have been describing our times when said, “Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature’s inexorable imperative.” Since February of this year, when COVID-19 first reached the shores of the United States, natural selection has both culled American lives and destroyed the economy. Our immune system isn’t able to fight a new virus and the changes in the economy were so sudden that many businesses failed to adapt, which forced them to shut their doors permanently. Mother Nature isn’t some malevolent being, yet it seems like she is fighting back. The new normal of social distancing since the Coronavirus pandemic isn’t really foreign to many outdoors and overlanding enthusiasts. Off-roaders has been hashtagging #socialdistancing during their explorations and excursions for some time now. It’s entertaining to see memes of a lone Jeep or Tacoma in the middle of nowhere with captions, such as “I’ve been social distancing before it was even a thing,” or “I’m social distancing from 600 miles away.” At Adventure Rigs, we are glad that our

10

community still has some sense of humor amid these chaotic and difficult times. We have a very select collection of rigs in this Issue that reflect how their owners have adapted to change. Carlo Ramos lost his dad when he was just a baby. Growing up not knowing his father has planted a constant longing in his heart for his departed parent. It has made him realize that life is fleeting. From being a son to becoming a father himself, Carlo craves to create experiences and memories with his daughter...a chance he never had with his own dad. His completely custom Delta Wood Bombers Montero allows him to go on trips with his daughter around California to as far as Canada to create those memories, enjoy nature and to get away from the hustle and bustle. Kevin Geraldez has been involved in the automotive aftermarket industry for a while. He is a SEMA veteran, who has helped many companies and builders make their show vehicles come to life. Kevin is a complete industry insider who has remained behind the

scenes...until now. The rolls have now reversed. His Shred N Tread Tacoma is his first custom build thanks to the encouragement of his friend to start a SEMA project with this Toyota pickup. Originally from South Africa, entrepreneur Bond Gilmer started Rebel Off Road in Southern California a decade ago. What was once a shop and retail store has now grown into one of the top builders and aftermarket parts manufacturers for Jeeps. We were fortunate enough to tag along with Bond and his crew on a product testing trip to the Eastern Sierra. He revealed that product testing has always been a big part of Rebel Off Road’s success in the highly competitive Jeep market. Rebel Off Road has stayed ahead of the curve through innovation and creativity in the swiftly changing off-road scene. Now more than ever, individuals and businesses alike, must adapt if they’re to survive the ever changing physical and economic environments. Remember, only things that are certain are death and taxes. Enjoy Issue #3.

CENTERFORCE II CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL INSTALLATION ON OVRLNDX JEEP RUBICON

TO HELP PREVENT stalling of his manual transmission Jeep and deal with the demands of technical off-roading, Hernandez traveled to Prescott, Arizona, home of Centerforce Clutches (a three-generation, family-owned company that manufactures highperformance clutches).

WORDS: CENTERFORCE // PHOTOS: MARCO HERNANDEZ

Last year, Adventure Rigs readers got to know Hernandez and his Rubicon in “OvrlndX: Ready for War with the Elements”*. As a talented photographer, Hernandez features his kittedout Jeep in beautiful backcountry locations throughout the American West, such as Poison Spider Trail in Moab.

32

M

arco Hernandez is the man behind @OvrlndX, the popular Instagram channel devoted to his overland adventure vehicle - a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that’s “prepared for off-road travel and exploration while equipped for any weather adventures for off-the-grid camping and family getaways.”

FOR THE OVRLNDX RUBICON, Centerforce installed the Centerforce II Clutch and Flywheel Kit, which is engineered for off-road enthusiasts in need of a performance clutch that works as well on-road as well as off-road.

THE CENTERFORCE II CLUTCH SET features Centerforce’s centrifugal weight system, which uses a patented ball bearing design to increase clamp load, maintain stock dimensions and lighten pedal effort. It also features highquality friction materials, an upgraded pilot bearing and specialized machining processes for outstanding holding ability and exceptional street manners. There’s also a high-inertia billet-steel flywheel to prevent the engine from stalling at low RPMs when negotiating technical terrain at slow speeds. Because the Centerforce II clutch set is designed for durability and has a heavier flywheel, it weighs 15.3 pounds more than the stock assembly.

THE CENTERFORCE II clutch set offers no-hassle bolt-in installation. To help DIYers install their new clutch properly, Centerforce provides a detailed installation checklist on their website (https://www.centerforce.com/files/ installation%20checklist.pdf), which is broken down into pre-installation, installation and post-installation.

FOR THE CLUTCH INSTALLATION ON THE OVRLNDX RUBICON, CENTERFORCE FOLLOWED THESE STEPS:

02. 01.

Disconnect the battery.

02.

Disassemble the bell housing, which covers the clutch and flywheel.

03. Remove the center console and pull up on both shifter knobs (transmission and transfer case).

05. 06.

04. Remove the shifter boot and shift knob, and put the shifter in first gear. The shifter should be as far forward as possible for easy removal through the hole in the transmission tunnel. 05. Disconnect the transfer case cable and all the wires. Remove the exhaust (in this case, we discarded the stock exhaust and upgraded to a Magnaflow Rock Crawler System, www.magnaflow.com/pages/rockcrawler-series-performance-exhaust-systems). Pull the hydraulic lines and remove the front and rear driveshafts. Make sure to mark the transfer case and driveshaft to make sure they’re reinstalled in the same orientation. 06. For ease of installation, Centerforce does not separate the transfer case from the transmission since they have a jack large enough to handle the weight. Home mechanics and shops with smaller jacks will need to separate them due to weight.

ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM

33

08. 07.

Pull the stock pressure plate, stock flywheel, clutch fork and OE bearing.

08. Clean all surfaces. Vehicles that spend a lot of time offroading can be especially hard on the bell housing and components. Use a Scotch Brite pad to clean it all up. 09. Inspect the transmission collar for excessive wear, as this can create excessive noise if worn out and not replaced. 10.

Degrease all components and make sure the spline of the transmission is debris-free and dry (it doesn’t need grease).

11.

Grease the collar of the throwout bearing and pivot points of the ball.

12.

Put the throwout bearing on the fork, being careful not hyper-extend the throwout bearing clips. Otherwise the bearing will lose its tension and be loose on the fork, creating unwanted noise.

13.

Install the flywheel, with threadlocker on the bolts. The pilot bearing is sealed so it does not need grease.

14.

Torque up the flywheel, following the torque specs in the owner’s manual.

15.

Using the alignment tool, put the clutch disc, pressure plate and bolt in a star pattern and torque to 35 ft-lbs. No threadlocker is needed on these bolts because the pressure plate acts like a big lock washer.

16.

Put everything back in place, being careful to not pinch wires between the bell housing and engine block.

17.

Clean all the bolts, and put anti-seize on the threads (steel bolts in an aluminum block can lead to corrosion). Clutches are a wear item, so we want to be sure we can remove everything in the future without seized bolts.

18.

Put some silicone around the B&M shifter and torque down the bolts.

19.

Once the clutch and flywheel are installed and everything is tightened up, re-install the stock exhaust or a replacement system like the MagnaFlow RockCrawler.

AFTER THE INSTALLATION, Hernandez was stoked about the upgrade: “I’m loving my new Centerforce II Clutch and High Inertia Flywheel Kit. I’m really surprised at the difference between the stock clutch and the Centerforce performance clutch. My Jeep feels different, the new flywheel is precision balanced and it uses sealed bearings, [and] I can tell my engine is liking that flywheel!” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT CENTERFORCE.COM

I

was never really into the “off-road” scene, but I did like the Baja-style racing trucks and bug-out vehicles, but never intended to build one. I was more of an old school classic guy. I’ve owned a ’67 Cadillac and have always been around older cars. My dream vehicle is still a ’64-’66 VW Bus, ’64 Impala wagon or early-’90s Defender. My automotive background started in the late-’80s. I used to airbrush at local malls, indoor/outdoor swap meets, car shows and events. I started airbrushing car club shirts and their cars. Later, I ended up in the silkscreen industry, working for companies that catered to all the automotive companies, events and apparel. After the silkscreening career, I fell into the toy industry. I was the art director at JADA Toys back in 2002-10. Now I am a designer and run the video/photo production for another toy company - Maisto International Inc. On the side, I also do events with Hampton Productions as their videographer.

[ THE FIRST ] This Tacoma was the first off-road vehicle I built. But when I bought it, it wasn’t to build it up for off-roading or “overlanding.” It was basically my daily driver and surf mobile. The best part of doing this build was learning about the product that is involved for off-road vehicles and meeting new people. I’ve known a lot of people in the automotive lifestyle, racing, Lowriders, Imports and performance industry, but not the off-road community.

38

N34° 24’ 3” W117° 43’ 38” I wanted a Tacoma for a while and it just seemed like it’s the best mid-size truck and the resale value was great. A lot of my buddies that surf also have Tacomas. I wasn’t really a fan of trucks until now and as many times I have moved, I have always said “I need a truck”! I have moved twice after owning this truck, and I could never really use it for moving because of all the stuff that is on it.

[ THE RIGHT ESSENTIALS ] Having the right essentials for whatever type of build you’re doing all falls on your budget. You start with the basics that fit your needs or what you plan on doing first to get you by. The Tacoma, right off the dealer lot, is ready for offroading, depending on the model or trim you get. So, it can be anything from just your basic town hauler, lifestyle vehicle or a show vehicle. I ended up doing it all.

ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM

39

I started getting more interested in the “offroad” scene once my friend told me about what he wanted to do to his Tacoma and why. He showed me a few builds and I got hooked! I was like “man I can use that” or “I need that”. So, I started buying a few things here and there that I needed. After buying a few more parts and accessories for the Tacoma, a good friend of mine inspired me to do a SEMA Show build while the truck was still new. I’ve been going to the SEMA Show for more than 25 years, and I finally got the vehicle to do a show build. I’ve helped others in the past by doing their renderings and sharing my industry contacts but I have never done my own build. So, I thought it was my time. I put a proposal together, talked to a few friends in the industry, and met new ones to help me progress towards my goal. Surprisingly, a lot of companies were supportive and kicked down other parts needed to complete my 3rd Gen Tacoma build. Dedication and a lot of time is involved when doing a sponsored build. A lot is expected of you when a product sponsorship is offered. I stay pretty loyal to my brand partners and give them what they require, expect, and more. You don’t know how many times I’ve heard sponsors say, “Yeah, we gave him stuff and never heard back from him or never got any photos”. Those guys give others a bad look. If you don’t have the time and dedication to do what you’re supposed to, then don’t try seeking sponsorships or accept sponsored products.

40

[ WRENCHING ] I did about 90% of the build with my buddy Eric (@surfin_taco). It’s good to have a friend that has pretty much all the tools you need. But after a while I ended up investing in a lot of tools I needed since my buddy moved to a new home that was further away.

[ INTENTIONS ] My intention for building the truck was to make it my ultimate “lifestyle rig”; I don’t call it an “overland rig.” I think that name is overused and used wrong sometimes. Everything I have on it pretty much fits my needs or accommodates my lifestyle and gives me options to travel to remote areas. As a photographer, storyteller (videographer), and surfer, I can pack all my essentials and more and go pretty much anywhere to capture...and get to remote surf areas.

[ THE FAVES ] Some of my favorite things added to my rig, believe it or not, is my Water Port. There were so many times that I’ve needed water to shower or rinse my gear after surfing, especially when the water would be shut off because of the droughts. Also, some areas didn’t have showers or water, so you would just bring water jugs or whatever. The Decked drawer system was a must because I always had stuff to store and lock down and can still have easy access to my truck bed. The pop up tent and awning are also

my other favorites. No more bringing a pop up canopy or ground tents that make things stressful and dirty. Once you start upfitting your rig it never ends, no matter what it is - from upgrading to changing out the old. Once Eibach comes out with their coilovers, I will be upgrading my suspension. Eventually I’d like to switch my tent to a hardshell system that pops up super easy. Freespirit Recreation (FSR) has one that just released this year that I have my eyes on. I love my Centerline Patton wheels, but I might swap them out for their new Atlas wheel they have for 2020. Of course, being a graphic designer, I’ll probably change my vinyl wrap next year if I get tired of the one I have now, maybe even a full wrap next. I’ll probably get another water port or something bigger. I’d really love to get a bed slide system of some kind. I know there are a couple out there that are good.

[ DESTINATIONS ] I haven’t really gotten to do any major trips yet. Having to attend shows and building the truck as parts would come in at random times, makes it hard at the moment to go on any long trips. Plus, the only time to do the installs are weekends. I usually have a full calendar and I only have a few open windows during the year. Raising triplet teenage daughters, vacations with the fiancé, work, and now this truck, I make sure I make time for everything. But now that the truck is fully built, all the shows were accomplished last year, and my girls graduate

ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM

41

this year, I’ll have more free time at the end of this year and 2021 to actually take full weekend adventures with the truck. But I will still attend local trail runs or events if my calendar is open. I do have a favorite surf location my friends and I like going to. I kind of don’t want to give it away because it’s a small spot and it gets super crowded with surfers. I’d hate to give it up and flood it with off-road vehicles and overlanders, that’s what Pismo is for. It’s a dirt road and you can park your truck literally on the beach, pop tents up and awnings and BBQ.

[ FIRSTS ] The first trail run I did was with Eibach. My truck wasn’t lifted nor did I have any armor cladding. It was at Cleghorn Trail here in Southern California. It wasn’t super technical but a great trail to learn on and see what my truck was capable of. I did get a few dents under the truck where sliders would have come in handy. I also got some pinstripes but nothing major besides some gut-wrenching moments. I highly recommend that trail for starters if you’re local to the area.

[ PLAN + PREP ] Preparing for trips is always key. Researching the location, trail conditions of the area you plan to go to, along with weather forecasts for that time. Even if I am going for the day, I have to make sure of the rules, regulations and weather. Also a buddy system is always good especially if you’re not used to the area but that’s if you decide to go off the grid. That’s just common sense. Having a HAM radio is a good idea because most likely you won’t have cell phone service. 42

ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM

43

Having recovery tools and First Aid kit should always be in your truck along with extra fuel/ water, spare nuts and bolts, zip ties, and duct tape. It’s better having things than not having them when you need them. You have a radio and always tell someone where you are going beforehand. Give that person your coordinates and when you are supposed to be back.

[ FUTURE & BEYOND ] I usually save my vacation time for Hawaii each year. Now Baja is next on my list of epic big trips. But first I am planning on going up the coast to Big Sur and on the trip home stop at Yosemite with the truck this time. Being new to the off-road market I’ve noticed it’s bigger than it was two years ago. There is still a big growth in lifestyle, products, and events. I see it continuing for a long time until people start giving it a bad reputation by not respecting the community, public lands, parks and recreation rules, or start making “truck clubs” that end up turning into small “gangs.” I’ve seen very similar things happen before in other genres of the automotive scene.

R

ebel Off Road in Laguna Hills, CA, has been known in the off-road and overlanding scenes as one of the premier Jeep shops in the nation. Since the early 2000s, many local Orange County Jeepers have been taking their rigs for the Rebel Off Road treatment and overhaul to get them ready for trail abuse and fun. What was once a local hidden gem in Southern California, Rebel Off Road started making noise in the Jeep scene after entrepreneur Bond Gilmer made the rounds across the United States, attending Jeep events. Over the years, Bond has gone to Easter Jeep Safari in Moab in Utah, King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, CA, and to different Jeep jamborees more times than he could remember to showcase the workmanship of Rebel Off Road Jeep builds and

46

educate enthusiasts about other high-quality components that they may not be aware of. A decade since Bond started the company, Rebel Off-Road has built a reputation of superior workmanship, high-quality product selection, and excellent customer service. We had a chance to go on Rebel Off Road’s winter road trip earlier this year to the Eastern Sierra and discovered a few of the secrets to their success. Three newly upfitted Jeep Gladiators went on the weekend excursion. We left Rebel Off Road HQ in Orange County around sunrise and three hours later, we found ourselves admiring the jagged spires of Trona Pinnacles, which is less than an hour from the boundaries of Death Valley. Our

The Gladiators were being driven on the highways and off-pavement like they were Hertz rental cars. Gas pedals were mashed to the floor on long uphill highway sections while launching and catching air on dirt trail whoops. We drifted around curves along loose gravel roads before going over boulders the size of Mini Coopers. More than six hours of “follow the leader” routine of

vehicular abuse, we finally realized what Bond and his team were doing - TESTING. Not only were they testing how aftermarket products on the vehicles held up but also testing how the new Jeep Gladiator held up to the abuse. Bond confirmed on the following morning in Alabama Hills that product testing allows them to give companies feedback and recommendations on their products, and give him and his staff the confidence to sell products they believe in. The partnerships with brands they represent and the trust they developed in products they sell and use on their builds are things that have separated Rebel Off Road from both their peers and competitors.

Although there seemed to be an endless sea of high-quality parts used to put together these overlanding Gladiator trucks, there were three product categories Rebel Off Road was testing that stood out. It became apparent that these aftermarket upgrades deserve at least some consideration if an enthusiast wants to build a rig that won’t fall apart on its maiden voyage. Many Jeeps upfitted for adventure travel are notoriously heavy after adding a roof or bed rack and attaching accessories such as rooftop tents, High-Lift jacks, fuel cans, etc. Loading the trunk or truck bed with the rest of your overlanding gear and equipment makes it even worse. The axles that come standard on your Wrangler Sport may not be up to the task when they’re rolling on 37” or 40” tires while hauling several hundred pounds of gear over hundreds of highway miles and long stretches of bonejarring washboard roads. Sooner or later your Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear axles on your Wrangler will crumble under the heavy load. The heavier duty Dana 44 axles on the Wrangler Rubicon and Gladiator models come with stronger axle housing and larger diameter axle tubes. In general, they should be sufficient for occasional off-road and overlanding use.

The three Gladiators were all upfitted with bulletproof axles that won’t succumb to the rigors of adventure travel, rock crawling, or even towing a heavy trailer. The Punk’n Orange Gladiator rides on Currie Extreme Dana 60 front axle, paired to a prototype Currie F9 low pinion rear axle that kind of resembles an F117 Nighthawk jet. The gray Iron Man Gladiator’s Dynatrac ProFloat XD60 front axle and Dynatrac ProRock80 rear axle provide this Jeep a solid platform that just won’t fail...pending a meltdown from the “Arc Reactor.” Lastly, the Daggi Orange Gladiator sits on a set of tough Spicer Dana 60 axles, fore and aft. Three Jeeps loaded to the brim and the punishing way Bond and his crew were driving them on the backroads of Trona and rock crawling through the maze of boulders in Alabama Hills, inspired confidence in us that these axles aren’t going to snap.

Rebel’s “homebrew” suspension system that was on all three Gladiators were equally impressive. The on-road manners of these trucks were unashamedly Cadillac-like in ride comfort. However, there seemed to be a hidden switch inside the cabin that allowed these Jeeps to perform high-speed driving in the backroads of Trona like they were trophy trucks. It was amazing that none of the Jeeps busted a suspension seal, sprung a leak, or broke a control arm after hitting jumps and catching some air. Rebel’s new 4.5” Recon suspension lift with optional single front coilover or DSS (Dual Shock System) kit using King Shocks felt so dialed-in as they soaked up bumps and jumps that kept the 40” Maxxis Razrs and Nitto Trail Grapplers planted on the dirt during our high-speed trail runs. “These are race-proven technologies and we use them on the Jeeps,” Bond intimated to us. 52

Organizing gear and equipment in your rig is probably the most important part when going on an adventure trip. There is nothing worse than not having enough space for the things you need for the trip. Rebel Off Road was testing their new XPLOR modular bed rack system, along with their already successful Halo Roof Rack. Their XPLOR racks come in full-size or half-size, with the half-size rack being shorter in height that allows you to mount a rooftop tent on the rack and in-line with the Gladiator’s roofline for a more aerodynamic configuration. Bond put a lot of thought into this bed rack. He prioritized modularity, accessibility, security, and ruggedness during the design process. With the ability to mount Rebel’s carrier plates on the outside, inside and top of the rack, you can create the perfect setup for your next adventure. Perhaps our favorite option on this rack is the table mount that attaches underneath the top portion of the XPLOR rack. This allows you to run Lifetime brand tables tucked up and stored securely. When getting to your outdoor destination is as important as coming back home safely, the undergirding principle we’ve learned from this trip is that pick the right products that have been tested and proven time and time again that they work. As the saying goes, “Buy once. Cry once.”

1998 MITSUBISHI MONTERO

OWNER: CARLO RAMOS |

@DELTAWOODBOMBERS WORDS: CARLO RAMOS // PHOTOS: GENE PASCUA

I

didn’t have much of an automotive background until I came to the United States from the Philippines when I was still a child. We were not fortunate enough to have that luxury. I did grow up around dirt bikes and anything that had two wheels. The off-road scene always has me very intrigued, but never really ventured into it much due to financial responsibilities and just “adulting” in general. My current vehicle, which is a ‘98 Mitsubishi Montero Gen 2.5, is the first off-road vehicle I’ve built. I got it from my good friend Robert Akiyama at M&S Recycling, and purchased it as a tow vehicle for my 18-foot offshore centerconsole fishing vessel.

The thing that got me really excited about this platform is that it was never a popular vehicle here in the States. Mitsubishi overbuilt this SUV. For example, it has a 9.5” rear pumpkin with rear lockers. But my favorite part of this build is that it’s unique - sort of like a unicorn. I say that because you don’t see too many of them being built in the States. They are popular everywhere else in the world. I didn’t pick the Montero… the Montero picked me. I am such a huge fan, with its blister fender “widebody.” I love the lines and contours of this particular year. I’ve always been a fan, although not a purist. I owned several Dodge Raiders when I was in my mid-20s, and I also currently own a 100 Series Land Cruiser.

“Cheap isn’t quality, and quality isn’t cheap.”

[ METHODOLOGY ] My motto is: “If I don’t have it? They don’t make it.” Aftermarket parts...What’s that? Unfortunately, it’s rare to find good aftermarket parts for the Montero. You have to dive into a haystack and find that needle. I was very particular and meticulous with certain bolt-on items, such as the suspension. At the time, OME (Old Man Emu) by ARB was the only option. I ran with it for a whole off-roading season until I discovered and ventured more and more into harder trails that created a need to get a better suspension setup for the Montero. I’ve always been a firm believer of doing things right the first time and buy nice, buy once. Currently, I cannot think of anything that is a (bolt on) on the truck. Since, aftermarket parts are so rare for the Montero, I started looking into fabrication shops to make parts for me. One piece of advice…please, please, please do your research. Get everything on paper, ask questions and more questions. Stand firm with what you want as the final outcome. Cheap isn’t quality, and quality isn’t cheap.

For major maintenance, I trust one person with my vehicle and he’s my best friend - Max Polischuck with CAtuned Off-road. As much as I love wrenching on my own vehicle, I just don’t have time to do it. I have a full-time career that takes me from Sacramento to South San Francisco on Mondays through Fridays. So, the last thing I want to do on my weekends is wrench. I find it easier and more realistic to keep the Montero in good working condition to have Max work on my rig.

meticulous when it comes to wheel brands. The problem is that the wheels I wanted for my vehicle sometimes are not a direct fit. So, again, this particular set of wheels had to be modified to fit. I needed the centerbore to be increased to 108mm to go on the Montero’s wheel hub. Mission accomplished with the help of a local machine shop in Sacramento, CA.

[ GOODS ] Almost everything in the rig is custom fabricated. The front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, and roof rack are all unique and one-offs for my rig, and each serves a purpose. Form, fit, and function; not just aesthetics. I’m not a big fan of mass produced bumpers and bolt-on parts for the Montero. So, I decided to contract the build to a local shop, who I won’t name, to come up with something to my specifications and more my style. My skid plates that protect the Montero’s underbelly were custom-designed by Joshua Mead of Adventure Driven Designs in Arizona. It’s constructed from 3.5mm stainless steel. The rear suspension sports a pair of Dobinson 2.6” body monotube remote reservoir (MRR) shocks that are meant for a Toyota 100 Series Land Cruiser. The rear shock towers had to be custom-designed and fabricated. This bespoke rear suspension setup was made possible by a very good friend, Ivan Pukhan. Ivan designed and fabricated the new shock towers, to accommodate the longer rear shocks. The front suspension setup uses a pair of Fox 2.0 shocks with adjustable reservoir that was custom valved and tuned by AccuTune Off-Road and mated to custom-designed extended shock towers. The one-off front shock mounts were fabricated by Killer Off-Road Fabrication in Simi Valley, CA. Final installation 60

and fabrication was completed by Max Polischuk with CAtuned Off-Road. With the vehicle sitting a bit higher than factory specs. I needed to have longer brake lines to compensate for suspension travel, flex, and articulation. I reached out to the people at Safebrake in Melbourne, Australia, for the performance braided brake lines I needed. The Black Rhino Primm beadlock wheels I have also had to be modified a bit. I am very

I had custom drawers made by BOSS Strong Box in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, so I can haul, organize and keep out of sight important items I bring with me on trips. I also needed an easier way to access my Dometic Dual Zone 75 in the trunk, so I had a custom slide and tilt fridge mount made by DFG Offroad. The fridge mount is bolted securely to the BOSS Strong Box.

[ PATH TO ZEN ] I grew up without a father. He was stabbed and murdered by his own brother when I was only a year old. I must have found my father when he died because my grandfather discovered me laying next to him on the kitchen floor. My grandfather thought I also was dead because I was covered in my father’s blood when he found us. I carry a picture of my parents wedding day since it’s the only photo I have of my hero. I carry it when I trek solo because I pretend he is there with me. The higher I can get my vehicle to climb a mountain, the closer I get to my dad. I make frequent stops during my trips, especially at places I have never been before. On occasion, I’ll sit there and cry because I miss my hero. Sometimes I do feel like he is with me, inside my vehicle. But, that is the short version of how I became passionate

with this lifestyle. It makes me smile, to hide the pain just for a little while. Find your adventure because, if not now, then when?

[ FAVES ] I looked at Tepui after deciding I wanted a roof top tent. I did some research and found out that Tepui was based near Santa Cruz, CA, which wasn’t too far from where I live. I went and visited their facility to check out in person what they had to help me pick out which tent I wanted for me and my daughter. I chose the Ruggedized Kukenam 4 because of the material used and its rugged construction. My daughter and I love our sleeping real estate and comfort. The Dometic Fridge is another one of my favorites because I no longer have to find a place to store a cooler that requires ice cubes to keep our food cold and fresh. Besides, they make killer fridges that suit our California and Canada excursions. The custom drawer system in the trunk is one of those necessary things for me because I like to keep the truck pretty organized. I like things where they belong. Imagine your kitchen without drawers or cupboards and everything is in hard plastic totes? It’s the same exact idea here. Upfitting the Montero is a never ending process. Just when I think I’m happy with everything, I keep finding things that can be improved, modified, etc. The truck is currently at Dissent

Off-Road to have custom fabrication done on the interior and exterior. I’m not at liberty to discuss that at the moment. I hope that I will make it to Overland Expo West with one of my biggest sponsors - Agency6 - and reveal the new change.

[ LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER ] I’m not a perfectionist in many areas of my life by any means. But, I really am when it comes to being a father to my baby girl. It’s my card. It’s my signature. My baby girl and I love the outdoors very much, and I wanted to continue building memories with her. Memories that she will never forget and pass on to her own children someday since we’re only here just for a little while and there are no promises that we’ll live the following day. So, I live life like it’s my last day on earth. My daughter and I enjoy life outdoors, whether it be hiking throughout California or parts of Canada, to fishing the California delta and local lakes, or camping up and down the Sierra Nevada or anywhere along the California coastline.

[ FATHER-DAUGHTER TIME ] Every single trip that I’ve done with my daughter has been memorable. Our most recent one was last year for her 18th birthday and graduation. My daughter is not a materialistic kid. When I called and asked her what she wanted for her birthday and graduation gift, she said, “Daddy, let’s go on an Eastern Sierra expedition.” I said, “Sweetheart, if that’s what you want, we’re going.”

I packed the truck for a 3-night trip to the Eastern Sierras. Departed our home base in Sacramento at four in the morning, and we were bound for Bridgeport. I had a couple of surprises for her on this trip. From the time she started learning about ghost towns in elementary school, she has always wanted to visit one. So, our first stop was the historical jail in Bridgeport, CA. We then went to Bodie Ghost Town. She had no idea where we were until she recognized the place from pictures. She said, “Daddy, we’re really here. This is so cool dad!” We spent five hours there exploring and learning about the town’s history before we headed back to the truck, had a quick lunch and drove to our next destination. Those are the moments that I will always cherish. We continued to push south on Highway 395 and stopped at every single lake we were passing through. The second surprise was Alabama Hills, which was about three hours from Bodie. She’s only seen photos of my trips at this gorgeous location. We got off the paved road and as we entered Movie Road, the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada contrasting the rounded contours of Alabama Hills desert floor welcomed us. My baby girl’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, the smile and excitement on her face melted my heart. As I caught a quick glance of Mt. Whitney, I whispered, “Dad, I wish you were here with us. Please look after us and keep us safe through this expedition. Tomorrow is your granddaughter’s 18th birthday, dad.”

CAMPING GEAR: Tepui Kukenam 4 Ruggedized roof top tent with Annex, Alu-Cab EZAwn 270, Goal Zero Lightings, KampRite UFO Light, KampRite table, chairs and sleeping bags, Kovea Cupid heater We then settled into camp and I cooked my daughter’s favorite camp dinner, garlic fried rice and corned beef, which is a typical Filipino dish. After dinner, we hiked around with headlamps on, looking at rock formations, and my baby girl was in her element being in the outdoors. The following morning, the sun’s summer rays greeted us early at six in the morning and it was already 89 degrees. She packed up everything from the roof top tent, while I quickly took care of everything on the ground. Knowing my kid, she loves her breakfast and said, “Dad, what about my breakfast?” I said, “Sweetheart, let’s get out of here and I’ll gladly get us breakfast at an awesome restaurant in town.” Fifteen minutes later, and we were back on the trail. We arrived in Lone Pine and walked into Mt. Whitney Restaurant. We were greeted by some of the friendliest people who sat us in a booth next to an old piano. My daughter, being a pianist, asked our server if she could play while waiting for our food. She played for a good 10 minutes and everyone in the restaurant gave her a round of applause. We finished up our breakfast and made our way back north on Highway 395 to finish the trip.

[ OVERCOMING CHALLENGES ] I live in Northern California, and I’m surrounded by awesome trails within a two hour drive. I do love the Gold Country. The drive to and from there is always such a pleasure for me. Camping can be difficult at times because the area is a popular spot for deer and bear hunters and hikers along the Pacific Crest Trail. What is difficult to me may completely be the opposite to others. My Montero’s suspension has limited articulation due its torsion bars, among other things, which inherently limits me to where I can take my rig. My hardest challenge to this date would have to be Slick Rock Road Trail in the Stanislaus National Forest here in California. It’s one of the more difficult 4X4 trails in Northern California and, now looking back to the experience, my rig probably had no business 62

being there. My daughter was with me on this trip, and I’m always very cautious when she is on-board. The vehicle did suffer some battle scars from that trip. A dented gas tank and I completely thrashed the factory skid plates that day. I don’t do very many technical trails, only because I am aware of my vehicle’s capability limitations and my lack of skills on rocks.

[ WINGIN’ IT ] I’m the worst person to even plan a trip, to be quite honest. I like winging my trips and end up somewhere completely unexpected. To me, those are the best ones. Because, you’ll never be disappointed. As far as preparation, I spread out my gear cases inside my kitchen to ensure everything is where they belong. I start loading a day before the trip and have the fridge plugged into the house outlet, and unplug it right before we leave. I’ve left it plugged in and drove away once. Precooling the Dometic DualZone Fridge before the

trip has helped me keep all our food cold and fresh. By doing so, the fridge will only kick on to maintain your temperature set-point. I check everything on the vehicle. All the fluids topped off, if need be. A thorough inspection of things that may have come loose and tighten them if needed. I remove the air filter each trip, perform a thorough cleaning of the rig, and ensure that anything that needs lubricated is well lubricated. Here is a pro tip though when going to a new location - please do your research. You also cannot ever be overprepared. It’s better to have it and not need it, then needing it and not having it. Learn how all your equipment functions - winch, GPS, comms, etc. Tell your family or friends where your destination is and check in with them once you get there if there is cell service. Get to and from your destination safely and have a blast. Please leave no trace.

RIG REVIEW

AMERICAN EXPEDITION VEHICLES, or more commonly known as AEV, is one of the world’s premier manufacturers and suppliers of OE-quality, performance-driven aftermarket parts and accessories for off-road and overlanding vehicles. We had a chance to check out a couple of AEV’s newest creations - the Colorado ZR2 Bison and the Ram Prospector XL. These two upfitted off-road rigs come off dealer lots fully ready to tackle any off-road hurdles that may impede you from getting to your remote off-road destination.

ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM

67

[ COLORADO ZR2 BISON ] The Colorado is Chevy’s midsize truck, but comes with full-size capability. Owners get to choose how much power they need for their adventures, with three different engine options, including the very GM-exclusive Duramax 2.8L Turbo-Diesel. Design-wise, it’s designed to not only speed up work, but deliver more fun and excitement - always looking good. The fully boxed frame chassis is built for durability, while the comfortable and quiet interior has ample storage and creates comforts that make your journey the coziest yet (thanks to leatherappointed heated front seats, Bose sound system and a heated steering wheel). While the regular Colorado is a more than capable machine, the ZR2 is meant for EXTREME adventures, with its off-road upgrades, including purpose-built suspension and exclusive features like Multimatic shocks and front and rear electronic locking differentials. As a top-tier choice for an offroader, the ZR2 wasn’t enough for Chevy, which is why they partnered with AEV for the Bison edition. The collaboration offers customers an upgraded version of the ZR2 that’s capable, but more adequately equipped for technical terrain and overlanding travel. The ZR2 Bison was actually the first collaborated effort for AEV with any OE manufacturer and the result is a rig that goes above and beyond an off-road adventurer’s expectations. AEV enhanced the features of the ZR2, adding key integrated components to push the boundaries of the already popular Chevy truck. Such additions really optimize the truck’s overlanding and rock crawling capabilities. For 68

maximum protection of undercarriage elements while driving over extreme terrain, the Bison features five skin plates that cover the fuel tank, transfer case, engine oil pan and both front and rear locking differentials. Enhancing the exterior are AEV-designed stamped steel front and rear bumpers that also contain important trial recovery elements integrated into the rear. The Bison also flaunts standard fog lights below its traditional headlights. The distinctive flow-through lettered grille replaces the stock version, while 31” Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires wrapped in new Bison-specific 17x8 aluminum wheels round out the extras.

[ DODGE PROSPECTOR XL ] Like the Colorado Bison, the Prospector XL is also a collaboration, but between AEV and Dodge. The Ram HD is a heavy-duty machine, but the Prospector XL was engineered to ride and handle much better. Using the OE engineering as the baseline, AEV improved on the truck’s off-road handling, by optimizing its factory springs and control arms with 3” cast aluminum coil spacers and front brackets, which also improves fender well clearance. To better improve unsprung weight, AEV co-engineered Bilstein 5160-series remote reservoir shocks. The AEV High Steer Kit restores all factory geometry thanks to a track bar, track bar tower and replacement drag link. The AEV 3”

Having essential recovery tools is great, but for those who venture further off pavement, having additional items can be crucial.

PRO TIP

A

basic recovery kit should contain the essentials. This includes a recovery strap, shackles, a snatch block and winch rope extension - at a minimum. But there are other items that can provide additional recovery options for stuck situations.

1. TRACTION BOARDS

You’ve undoubtedly noticed these recovery accessories on scads of adventure vehicles. Available in a variety of colors and shapes, these boards, usually made of a composite or plastic material, are designed to be laid down in front (or sometimes in back) of your vehicle’s tires, and you drive onto them to get unstuck. Companies, such as Maxtrax, have been offering these for years as a great way to get out of sand, snow or other terrain. Many of them stack easily and can be mounted conveniently to a roof rack or spare tire carrier, and can even be used as a shovel to clear debris from around the wheels. 72

Traction boards, such as these from Maxtrax, offer a great way to get out of sand, snow, or other terrains. They’re simply placed in front or behind the tire and are driven over.

Shovels come in all shapes and sizes, but their use is simple and effective, no matter the kind. This model from DMOS Collective folds down when not in use, but is great for use in all sorts of material.

2. SHOVEL

It could be argued this should be a part of a basic kit for sure, as it’s a simple tool that can do a lot. But whether it’s a basic garden shovel with a round-point head, or a super trick compact, foldable unit from companies like DMOS Collective, a shovel can be a first step to a very difficult, advanced extraction. Removing as much material as possible from around the vehicle will allow for easier recoveries. Heck, sometimes with enough digging, you can just drive on out. Plus, a shovel is an important tool to have in dry areas prone to fire—some locations require you to carry one to help put out fires during summer months.

3. LAND ANCHOR

Say you’ve got a winch and all of the recovery gear you could possibly use. But what if there’s nothing to anchor your winch to? This is where a land anchor comes in. The idea is this: You bury an object into the ground deep enough that it becomes a viable anchor point. The old-school way to do this is to use your above-mentioned shovel, dig a hole, bury your spare tire with your winch line attached to it, and use it as the anchor point. While the idea is simple enough, it can be more difficult than it sounds. Thankfully, there are companies out there that manufacture dedicated land anchors instead. The best-known land anchors are those from Pull Pal. These folding units look a bit like a one-sided boat anchor when ready to be put into the ground, and the idea is pretty much the same. The pointed spade is sunk into the ground, and the harder you pull on it, the farther into the ground it goes. They can work very well, especially in sand or loose dirt. The downside is they are rather large and can be difficult to remove after a hard pull. Despite this, they can also be a lifesaver.

A land anchor, such as this model from Pull Pal, allows for a suitable anchor point when there aren’t any others. The harder it gets pulled, the farther the spade digs into the earth.

There are other alternatives out there, such as the Deadman Earth Anchor, which is made from a flexible material (it looks like a heavy-duty tarp) with looped ends. You first dig a hole, lay the Deadman in the hole, then fill the hole with dirt with the looped ends sticking out as your winch point. While it often requires more digging, it is easier to store than a traditional land anchor. Either way, if you travel or wheel where there aren’t many anchor points, a land anchor is a good item to have in your recovery arsenal.

PRO TIP

Off-road jacks can lift a vehicle from various points including bumpers, rock sliders, and in this case, a wheel. Take caution when using them, as they can be tricky due to their small footprint and tall height, among other variables. When used properly, they’ve very versatile.

4. OFF-ROAD JACK

An off-road jack is also another ubiquitous piece of advanced kit that has been utilized for eons. Probably best known under the Hi-Lift brand, these versatile jacks can do everything from lift a vehicle to change a tire, to act as a winch in a pinch. Like most recovery gear, you should exercise caution when using them as they can be tricky to use in certain instances, and due to their small footprint and tall height, they can tip over with relative ease. There are a number of accessories that can be used with these “jacks of all trades” to make them safer and more useful, such as wider bases for increased stability, straps to lift from the vehicle’s wheel, and mounts for easier stowage.

This well-used set of cluster hooks is inserted into the frame holes of a rolled-over vehicle. This is exactly what they’re designed for, and can be great for recovery stuck cars, vans, and trucks.

5. CLUSTER HOOKS

While I’ve been in the vehicle recovery biz since (about 14 years), I’m always learning. A member of a local 4WD club is also a tow truck driver and recommends carrying a set of cluster hooks. These look like a giant keyring with a variety of J- and T-shaped metal parts. Cluster hooks are often what the tow truck drivers use when pulling a vehicle up a flatbed or out of a ditch. Many of these items will secure directly into the vehicle’s frame, and not just to the bumper’s anchor point or tow point. While these might not be needed for self-recovery, if you happen upon others who are stuck—especially those in modern cars or minivans—cluster hooks can be one of the only ways to safely recover a vehicle as many modern cars don’t have great recovery points. 74

6. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Having all the recovery gear in the world is useless if you don’t know how to use them. Learn the proper techniques for using your recovery gear, and practice at home before you need to use it on the trail. This will help ensure no one is hurt, and vehicles aren’t damaged. After all, safety is the most important part of vehicle recovery.

It’s crucial to know how to use your recovery equipment before you need to use it. Practicing with your gear can be the difference between a successful or failed recovery.
