Welcome

<<

Colleagu and Friends, Welcome to the virtual 2021 Rocky Mountain Philanthropy Institute (RMPI) hosted by the AFP Colorado Chapter. As the world around us continues to shift, this year’s conference theme of “Purpose and Possibility” will re-center and prepare fundraisers to embrace their purpose and the possibilities that tomorrow holds for themselves and the sector as a whole. While we had hoped to connect in person for RMPI 2021, the planning committee made the decision early on to provide a virtual conference experience once again. That decision, along with the theme and content of this conference, is reflective of a journey that the RMPI planning committee, as well as the AFP Colorado Board of Directors, has been on around the ideals of Inclusion, Diversity, equity, and Access (IDeA). We’re so excited for this year’s keynote speaker edgar Villanueva and featured speaker Nadia Hallgren. edgar’s breadth and depth of knowledge regarding the historical and often uncomfortable roots of philanthropy and wealth as well as Nadia’s ability to craft and convey a powerfully moving message will both humble and inspire attendees. Use this time together at RMPI to re-connect with the purpose that brought you into fundraising, the passion that moves you to work tirelessly, and the curiosity that feeds your well of possibility and opportunity. Thank you to Madeleine, Savanna, and Ann, and the RMPI planning committee, as well as the sponsors and speakers, who made RMPI 2021 possible.

Proudly,

Josh Zmroczek President, AFP Colorado 2

In RMPI’s opening talk, Ahmed, who is a former refugee from Somalia, as well as a social psychologist, winner of the Immigrant Liberty Award, and a community activist, will inspire you to revisit your purpose and think boldly about the future – to rise to the occasion with a resilience that few have embodied as fully as our refugee siblings.

friDay, sePtember 10 8:45 am – conference opens and welcoming remarks 9:15 am – featured speaker – nadia Hallgren the Human element + Q&a As people who fundraise, we often rely on stories to connect donors to the missions of our organizations. How we steward the stories of others is of tremendous consequence where there is opportunity to humanize our communities, there is also opportunity to fall back on tropes that reinforce harmful stereotypes. Nadia Hallgren joins RMPI to help us tell better stories. Hallgren is an award-winning cinematographer and director best known for shooting and directing Becoming, the Netflix documentary on First Lady Michelle Obama. Her approach to filmmaking centers the humanity of her subjects to connect with the humanity of her audience. 12:30 pm – Keynote address edgar Villanueva

fireside chat and Q&a: Decolonizing Wealth At its best, philanthropy – the love of humankind – brings out the generosity in people. But in America, our philanthropic system was designed to maintain systems of privilege and oppression. How can we, as people who fundraise, leverage our power to redistribute it – and wealth – to those who are most affected by these systems? In a conversational format, Edgar Villanueva – author of “Decolonizing Wealth: Indigenous Wisdom to Heal Divides and Restore Balance” – will offer insights alongside RMPI emcee Reggie Rivers. Villanueva will inspire you to think bigger about your purpose and the possibilities of our industry.
