DAY BYDAY I Caved, But You Don’t Have To
“Y
our’re waging an unwinnable battle!” my son Noah cried from the easy chair six feet away. No, we are not social distancing in our family room; that dumb chair just happens to be six feet away. He’s reading over there, and I’m writing over here. He and his girlfriend are plowing through another book together (virtually; she’s in Wisconsin, he’s in Tennessee). He says they love talking about incredible stories. I have a reader here! I have a reader! Raise your hand if you have one, too. Noah knows we’re including a feature on children’s books, reading and storytime in this issue. If it’s a losing battle, all hail kids who read! But the battle IS real. I can’t get my youngest to pick up a book for pleasure anymore. Give him a video game anytime over sitting still and taking in words from paper to brain. It’s not that he doesn’t read — he does, all day long: texts, posts and lately, long and winding e-mails from teachers. But a book? No way, it’s never his choice to do that. I think that with my youngest of four, I caved too soon when I delivered him an iPad. As a toddler he used to climb into my lap with his dog-eared Knuffle Bunny book. “Weed it again, Mama,” he’d say. That was the sweetest time of the evening (not to mention it was almost the magic hour when all the kids were asleep!). He’d smell, feel and look like a fresh, warm kid: baby shampoo, soft jammies, impossibly soft skin. Knuffle Bunny. I read it and read it and read it. I vocalized all kinds of storybooks every night, sometimes five or six of them until my boy’s eyes rolled around in his head. Have trouble getting your little one to sleep? Read and read and read. The battle Noah’s talking about is epic. Without reading you can’t learn. You won’t do well in school, and all of that reading in college? Forget it. My father-in-law, Pop, graduated from Yale “back in the day,” and I never saw him without a book or his Kindle. He was the smartest man I ever knew, full of knowledge about everything. But it IS a generational thing, so you can’t really hold today’s kids up against Pop or anyone else who grew up without a device. And truly there’s nothing more offensive to a kid today than when an older adult says, “When I was a kid ...” Just don’t. You’re supposed to pick your battles, right? Pick this one, then: When you can choose between putting an iPad or a book in your little one’s hands, choose the book. Keep the devices away as long as possible, and make it your goal to inspire a love for stories and reading. Give your toddlers nursery rhymes, knights, dragons, fairytales, princesses and wild adventures that will stretch their imaginations. You don’t have to cave to all of the so-called modern hype that makes a little one a digital junkie too soon. Take it from me: I wish I never had!

PARENTING 101 While having a baby “sleep through the night” is something all new parents aspire to, in reality, most babies wake frequently up to 12 months of age. The goal is actually to teach a baby to put himself back to sleep. Here are the top two current sleep-training methods best started between 4 and 6 months of age. According to a 2016 broad study of sleep-training involving babies, no evidence was found that it is harmful to a baby’s future well-being. HOW TO DO IT Go through your soothing bedtime routine then put Baby down on his back. Shush him, then quickly and gently pat his tummy to calm and reassure him that all is OK. You can let him fuss a little,

CRY IT OUT (CIO) SHOULD YOU WAKE A NEWBORN FOR A FEEDING?
The idea behind the cry-it-out method is to not respond to your baby’s crying. This is the most controversial sleep-training method of all (even experts disagree on whether or not it is acceptable). If you can’t stand hearing your baby cry, this is not a method for you. HOW TO DO IT Go through a soothing bedtime routine that includes a warm bath, a bedtime story and a feeding, then put Baby in his crib awake, say good night and leave. Some pediatricians suggest parents wait for at least one or two wake-ups before going back into the room. Be mindful of when your baby last ate to know if he needs another feeding; always provide the nighttime feedings your baby needs. The CIO method is difficult at first; hearing your baby cry will help you know if it’s for you or not, because it involves several nights of crying, but less and less crying as days progress. CAMP OUT This is when you stay in the room with the baby while he tries to fall asleep while gradually withdrawing your presence.

but if it starts to escalate, pick him up to soothe him before putting him back down, shushing and patting before he falls asleep. Sit by Baby’s bedside. A CAMP OUT SCHEDULE: • Days 1 - 3: Stand by Baby’s crib and gently rub or pat his tummy. • Days 4 - 6: Sit by your baby’s bedside but don’t touch him. • Days 7 - 9: Move your chair half way between Baby’s bed and the door. • Days 10 - 12: Sit in a chair by the door to the room. • Days 13 - 15: Sit outside the door, but where Baby can see you.

As your baby gets older and his sleep needs change, make sure that you’re aware and adjusting with him. Sleep-training is never a “one-and-done” endeavour. Once your baby has the skills to fall asleep on his own, he’ll still need routines, consistency and help adapting when life throws curveballs like starting day care, moving, going on a trip, etc. Colds, illnesses, teething and more can also throw a wrench into your schedule. The trick is to get back on track as soon as possible. If you start allowing or enabling bad habits and sleep associations, it will take longer to return to the regular routine.

Depending upon the baby’s age in days or up to two weeks, the question depends on his weight and overall health, says the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP; aap.org) Most breastfed newborns lose weight in the first few days after birth, waiting for the mother’s milk to “come in.” Until your newborn regains the lost weight — usually within one to two weeks after birth — it’s important to feed him frequently which may mean waking your baby for a feeding. Most newborns needs eight to 12 feedings a day, about one feeding every two hours. If you’re concerned about your baby’s sleep and feeding patterns, consult your pediatrician.

“W
illiamson County Schools” appeared on my newly cracked iPhone screen, and my heart sank down into my chest. I knew exactly why Carol Birdsong was calling. No more school year. Crisis homeschooling continues. Six feet apart just a little while longer. Thanks COVID-19. I think at first I felt like most of you probably did, too: disappointed for my kids (and myself — let’s be honest!), a small amount of relief, some panic mixed in — all tied up in a messy bow of GRIEF. My “Hey, let’s bake homemade bread!” enthusiasm has worn off, and now I’m just trying to figure out how to entertain three kids at home for a few more months and work full time from my make-shift office in our bonus room. And most of all, I’m still learning how to show up for everybody who needs me, including myself. But here’s the thing. We’re all in the same boat — an unprecedented one maybe with a few holes in the bottom of it — but nonetheless the same one. Everywhere we turn, leaders are calling on parents, small business owners and newly unemployed residents to be strong and resilient through this global crisis. And we are. We’re doing the dang thing. Not without our hard days, but we’re still finding creative and intentional ways to support our communities and each other. I think THIS is what we’ll remember from this time in history. And maybe the toilet paper hoarding, too. But this brings us to another point. What about our kids? What are they learning? How are they holding up? We have an opportunity to make a mark on history; to use this time to teach our kids to be independent thinkers and doers in the wake of a global pandemic. To raise the next generation to be self-sufficient and resilient, just like we are. Not so we can work our side hustle in peace or watch season 3 of Ozark in one sitting, but because we know there’s a connection between self-sufficiency and success in life. And we want our kids to be successful. If they’re going to be able to act and think for themselves, we have to create a home environment that fosters it. What better time to start than now?
It begins with you and with me — doing our part, a little at a time, to usher our kids into a life they can handle. And a life in which they can excel. We don’t do it so our kids can wash their own laundry by the time they’re in high school. I mean, yes, that would be great. But we should do it because it makes for a stronger family in the long term. When everyone has a voice, knows who they are, has room to fail and grow, and feels confident in their decisions, each family member feels his worth. Edwin Williamson, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center says it makes your family healthier, too. “All of these self-sufficient traits we instill in our children make for healthier relationships and more loving families who get along better. And THAT is the reason to do it,” he adds. But some parents may act on their own needs for power and use control and coercion to ensure they remain the dominant forces in their children’s lives. Even less harsh, but just as damaging, could be the good-hearted parent who just doesn’t want their children to fail or get hurt. This begs the question: When should our kids struggle so they can learn and when do parents need to intervene? “It’s a fine line,” Williamson says. “Studies of resilience show that a small bit of adversity is helpful to grow, and if kids don’t have any, they don’t learn life’s lessons. But on the other hand, too much can damage them.” Finding Balance is Key It’s helpful to understand what skills will foster self-sufficiency in each developmental stage of your child’s life. In the toddler years, think of it as laying the groundwork for the future. Create a secure environment where your little one feels safe to explore. Let him test the waters, knowing you will be there to catch him if he falls, literally and figuratively. Elementary-age children are more like tigers, Williamson says. “They’re willing to start new things and try new activities. Give it to them. They might even cause a raucous. Let them do it. You might be worried they will break something, and they might.” Middle-school kids aren’t quite ready for
full independence. They still like routines and don’t necessarily want to stand out from the crowd. Pull back some, but don’t give them full access quite yet. Address their individuality but understand where they are. High school kids are ready to create their own identity, and that takes more independence. Allow ample space for them to find it. If you’ve laid the foundation, they will have the confidence to step out on their own, but also know when to return back home for help. Ways To Guide Kids Towards Self-Sufficiency: Practically speaking, Williamson says to be conscious about the decisions you make at home. Ask yourself these questions: 1) Are the things I’m doing at home leading my kids towards self-sufficiency? 2) Are the things I’m doing making us overly dependent on each other? Or as Kim John Payne, M.Ed., ponders in his book Simplicity Parenting (Ballatine Books; 2010): “Can you recapture your dream of a family life that is big enough to accommodate all of its members? Can you realign your reality with the hopes you had for your family?” Taking stock of where you are is always the first step. Consider these tips: • Create an environment for open and honest communication with your kids. • Take the time to get down to their level and really listen to their hearts. Brushing off their voice or talking to them while distracted by technology or too-busy schedules has an adverse effect. Think of your conversation as a “collaborative” relationship, not a controlled one. Listening to their point of view may not change the answer or the outcome, but your children will feel valued and heard. • Develop consistent routines and make responsibilities clear. • Create structure in the home as a safety net for kids and helps provide a framework of security where they feel comfortable to learn. Kids need to feel like they are doing things on their own, but still have the necessary structure in place to be successful.”

It’s the first major survey of Indianborn artist Rina Banerjee’s work in the United States. The richly layered artwork comprises materials sourced throughout the world to reflect the splintered experience of migration, identity, tradition and culture often prevalent in diasportic communities. e caught up with our friends at Little Art House in Nashville to find out what their upcoming plans are. “Our hope and dream is to be able to host small, private groups for private sessions,” says Leighton Lancaster, co-founder of Little Art House. Lancaster says this can be a group of friends, a family, neighbors, etc. It’s all dependent on the phase of the reopening rollout, and they are in the process of putting together what the sessions will look like, including pricing. They’re also hopeful to be able to start booking birthday parties again by the end of the month. For June, Lancaster says they are endeavoring to keep summer camps and classes intact. “We have lots of camp options, and we’re working with the University School of Nashville again. At this point, we are allowing families to make bookings, and if for some reason we have to change the plan, we’re working on backup options,” she adds. In the meantime, Little Art House offers a variety of online Zoom classes. You can sign up for those, purchase art kits and even make a donation at littlearthousenashville.com/ online.

The museum has a brand-new page on its website, “Fun at Home” featuring a variety of coloring and activity sheets you can download and print out.
