stranger to the suffering brought by the pandemic and the lockdown. Local private businesses, the municipality, Councillors, Municipal Management, and some of the individuals saw fit to donate funds. The funds collected formed part of an initiative that helped several needy residents with donations. According to the municipality, the initiative is one of many social responsibility initiatives established since

2020. The municipality said that members of the community from all 17 wards received food vouchers worth R1000 each. 15 community members per ward were awarded the vouchers at Cacadu Park recently. The municipality added that this is one of the social responsibility programs they have had through the solidarity fund since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

"U het my al gesien toe ek ongebore was, al my lewensdae is in U boek opgeskrywe nog voordat ek gebore is. Hoe wonderlik is u gedagtes vir my o God!" My lewensdae is reeds bepaal deur my God! Prys Sy Naam!”

■ LOCAL LEARNERS EXCELLED AT THE SCIENCE WEEK DANIE CRONJÈ

 By Lebohang Tlaba CACADU: During this year’s national science week, primary school learners were challenged to creatively tackle the theme ‘energy and change’. Ntlalontle Senior Primary School learners from here in Cacadu were hosted by the Department of Education along with other learners from schools in Komani. They were hosted for an entire week which aimed to promote pupil enthusiasm for science. Grade 4 pupils were challenged to create musical instruments and explain how they worked. Those in grade five had to create posters and charts on how the fire in buildings can be managed while grade 6 pupils had to prove their brains by taking a quiz on this year’s theme. Louis Rex Primary School impressed, winning the top prize for grade 6 while coming second in the grade 4 competitions. A guitar designed by pupils from Ntlalontle Senior Primary School here in Cacadu won the grade 4 category while a poem by Emmet Mahonga Primary pupils wowed the judges for the grade 5 competition. Department of

Education here in Eastern Cape monitor, Maki Zihlangu, said the week was paramount in getting primary school pupils excited about sciences. Zihlangu said, “Throughout the years it has been difficult for pupils to participate in these weeks at higher grades and university. The purpose is to promote pupil participation throughout the province and encourage teachers and pupils to do more when it comes to science. It is one of the critical subjects in which pupils struggle in higher grades. We want to start enthusiasm for sciences at a younger age.” He said the event had to be cut down because of Covid19. “We usually have these celebrations on a large scale, but because of Covid, we had to have it on a smaller scale. We felt it would be a disservice to the children if we did not do anything at all. Some schools did not even have district-level science weeks, but only partook at the school level to avoid travelling and congestion. In Komani we had a big hall and all pupils participated while observing Covid 19 regulations,” Zihlangu explained.

Buffalo City Rekord (Eastern Cape) – East London: EASTERN CAPE SHOWS HUGE INCREASE IN NEW COVID-19 CASES The Eastern Cape Health Department says new Covid-19 cases in the province have increased by 28,7% in just a week. It says in the 24 hours, 1,252 new cases were reported, of which 46,6% were in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Dr Beyers Naude RekordAfrica Kia South (Eastern Cape) – Graaff-Reinet: LEGAL FEES AND DEBTS CRIPPLE SERVICE DELIVERY The Graaff-Reinet based Dr Beyers Naudé municipality has spent more than R4.6m on legal costs and civil claims since the start of their financial year, while their debt also keeps increasing. The legal burden of the municipality comes from struggles with rendering basic services, which has seen some areas heavily reliant on borehole water for almost five years. It has also been unable to

provide electricity in some instances, unable to collect revenue from those who owe it money, service its rising debts, or even pay third-party contributions to revenue service SARS, nor employees’ pension and provident funds. These are just a few of the revelations the municipality made at the portfolio committee on co-operative governance & traditional affairs (Cogta)

Sol Plaatje Rekord (Northern Cape) – Kimberley: LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS BALLOTS WILL HAVE SOME NEW FACES IN NORTHERN CAPE

The Free State MEC for Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation Limkatso Mahasa said in a statement delivered in April 2021: “After the renaming of Brandfort, the focus will fall on other struggle icons to be honoured in the province. They are Fezile Dabi and Albertina Sisulu. A statue of Dabi will be erected at Fezile Dabi Stadium in Parys, and one of Sisulu will be unveiled in Tweeling. The statues will be built in the new financial year”, Mahasa said.

Ngwhate Rekord (Vrystaat) – Parys: DIE PARYS - 5 TERUG IN DIE HOF

Whether it is October this year or February next, local government elections (LGE) ballots are expected to feature several new faces. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has received a number of applications for the local government elections, most of them are from service delivery forums. In the Northern Cape, at least six new

parties have applied to contest municipal elections. Analysts say this is due to various problems in the municipalities. Kimberley’s Sol Plaatje municipality, Dikgatlong in Barkley West, and Warrenton’s Phokwane Municipality are all expected to feature at least one new party on the ballot during the elections.

Maluti-a-Phofung Rekord (Free State) – Harrismith: ANOTHER FARM ATTACK - FIVE IN COURT FOR ROBBERY Five suspects was expected to appear before the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court for the possession of suspected stolen property and the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court for house robbery. This comes after

SAPS’ spokesperson in the Free State, Motantsi Makhele, had confirmed that the suspects were arrested by Harrismith and Ladysmith police shortly after an attack on a farm in the Harrismith district.

“I have observed the same councilors being returned to office over and over without consequence. Promises made during campaigning are discarded while the people are left clutching the baby. Take Matjhabeng municipality in the Free State for instance. Seven years ago, landless people in the towns of Allanridge, Odendaalsrus, and Welkom invaded empty plots after their demand for stands fell on deaf ears. Since then, they fended for themselves without water, toilets, and electricity. Two months ago, they went on the rampage and looted Bangladeshi tuck-shops demanding the sacking of their mayor, Nkosinjani

Speelman. Needless to say, Speelman remains in office and is preparing to serve a second term. Realizing that the people do not like him, he has decided to dangle a carrot to entice them to give him another term. Suddenly, there are stands available for the landless. Their excitement is palpable as they prepare to relocate to a place, they can call home. The caveat, however, is that they are moving to sub-serviced stands with no infrastructure. There is no water, electricity, and toilets in their promised Canaan. In Allanridge, they will be dumped near a graveyard, like zombies.”

Dis steeds tough maar ek probeer my kop bo water hou. Sal jy jouself beskou as ‘n stads-Japie of Plattelandse meisie? Ek sal altyd ‘n plattelandse meisie bly. Dis in my in gebore so dit sal nie verander nie.

Ps: ek gee lesse!!!

HEUNINGDRUPPELS  Deur Willem Botha – www.heuning.co.za “Wat is jou naam?” Toe vra die Here: “Wat is jou naam?” Here sal jou soos ’n sierlike kroon in sy hand hou, jou God sal jou soos ’n koninklike tulband vashou ... (Jes. 62:2-4) Wat is jóú naam? In van die Engelse vertalings sê dit “My delight” of “God is pleased with her”.

Ruim erwe, staalkombuiskaste (Fuchsware) in donkerbruin of geel of oranje. My kop werk as 'n regterbrein in die eindprent en sommige goed kan ek mos maklik mooimaak, of so maak ek myself wys. Vandag moes ek drie keer by Cashbuild dingetjies gaan koop. 'N hardewarewinkel is my hemel op aarde. WORLD RABIES DAY The aim of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources.

28 September 2021 The aim of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources. Rabies is a zoonotic disease (a disease which people can get from animals). It is caused by a virus which affects the brain and causes death. The virus is shed in saliva and is spread by the bite of an infected animal. In South Africa people are usually infected by dogs, but other animals such as cats, mongooses, jackals and other wild animals can also infect people. It is very important to have your pets vaccinated against rabies and to seek medical help immediately if you are bit by an animal. According to the World Health Organisation an estimated 55 000 human deaths occur worldwide per year due to canine rabies, accounting for 1 death and 300 exposures every 15 minutes. Almost all human fatalities occur in developing countries with 56 percent occurring in Asia and 44 percent in Africa.

Discover the Karoo ‘dorp’

Smithfield The town had its start in 1848 when sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape Colony, laid the foundation stone for a church planned as the focal point of a town north of the Orange River, to be named in his honour. The site was the farm Waterval of C.S. Halse, 24km south-west of the present location of the town. Residential stands were auctioned on 1 December 1848 but no one wanted to buy one; prospective residents were aware there was very little water in the neighborhood. In November of the following year, erven were sold on the farm Rietpoort. Smithfield became a municipality only in 1948 although its first village board was constituted back in 1860. The Smithfield district was the scene of much fighting between the early Free State settlers and the Basotho under Moshesh. The area also featured in British attempts to forge peace between these warring factions. In 1855 the village, barely six years old, was chosen as the site of a peace parely between Moshesh and Sir George Grey, governor of the Cape Colony, who acted as mediator. The truce did not last long. Now that you have the background of the town Smithfield, we now look at things to do and places to see while you visit this Karoo-town. Basotho War Memorial: In memory of those who lost their lives in that war, in front of the City Hall. Birthplace of Christiaan de Wet: (1854 - 1922), on the farm Leeukop. The house has been declared a National Monument. Bushman Rock Art: Various sites on the hill surrounding the town. Caledon River Museum: Exhibits include a display in memory of General Christiaan de Wet (1854-1922), an 18th century kitchen and the wool washery dating back to 1866 and `Old Grietjie’, a muzzle-loading ship's cannon used in most of the wars against the Basotho. Market Square: A wooden structure almost hidden in the corner of a large, empty stand is another reminder of an era gone by. Old School Building: The first school in the Orange Free State was established here in 1848. The school building, erected in 1850, still stands today and is the home of the museum curator. The Robertson War Memorial: A few kilometers outside the town, the interested visitor will find the remains of the rather unique Traacha Wool Washing Works. All that remains of this once active industry is a crumbling brick tower. Established in 1874 as a wool-washing works and wheat mill, a thriving wool-washing business was run at Traacha which was almost certainly the only one of its kind in the Free State. It was known for the high standard of its washed wool. In 1894 the farm was sold; the works have been standing vacant since then. Carmel Missionary stations: A former Mission Station. Beersheba Farm: A former French Mission, the farm is notable for its impressive farmstead, whose 1m-thick walls surround 18 rooms. Karoo House: Which is a National Monument, now a guesthouse.

WEED KILLERS: 5 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU SPRAY

■ DANIE CRONJÈ

REKORD - DO IT YOURSELF  Corné van Noordwyk

Kia South Africa

1. Begin with Prevention The weed war begins before the invaders take root. Create a garden that favors the plants you want to thrive and discourages weeds. It's all grounded in healthy plant care. That means growing plants suited for your microclimates (shade lovers in shade, sun lovers in sun) and providing adequate moisture and regular mulch. When plants are healthy, they thrive. Healthy garden plants and vigorously growing lawns will blanket open soil, preventing weeds from getting a foothold. 2. Know the Enemy and the Surroundings The first step in identifying a product or practice to kill the trespasser is to name the weed. What weed are you fighting? Learn how to identify the weeds growing in your garden. Weed killing products are weed-specific. A product that kills one weed might not phase another. 3. Consider the Impact Often the impact of a weed control product goes beyond the weed you are trying to control. Weed control products, or herbicides, are chemicals that cause a plant to stop functioning properly. The product has the potential to have a similar effect on non-weed plants and animals. Plants and animals have varying sensitivities to environmental factors, which amplifies the fact that weed products must be used with care and caution. 4. Follow the Label (It's the Law) Product labels provide critical information about how to safely handle and use the weed product. The Environmental Protection Agency oversees the label content based on scientific data on the potential health and environmental effects. Pesticide labels, unlike most other product labels, are legally enforceable. They all carry the statement, "It is a violation of the Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling." In other words, the label is the law. Don't use the product for any other purpose or any other way than what is described on the label. 5. Be Mindful of Organic and Natural Herbicide It is often thought that because an herbicide is labeled organic or natural, it is safer than a synthetic product. This is mostly true thanks to the quick breakdown of organic weed killers in the environment compared to some inorganic herbicides, which can remain a long time in the soil or a plant. High concentrations of some organic herbicides may pose a significant risk to nearby plants and animals. The most earth-friendly way to get rid of weeds is to dig them out by their roots. When that isn't an option, carefully choose a product that eliminates the weed with minimal impacts on the surrounding environment.
