Da quando, nel 1602, Matteo Manetti cura il restauro della palla d’oro che sormonta la cupola del Brunelleschi: inizia così per la famiglia un percorso che segue l’evoluzione della trasformazione del lingotto in foglia. Ancora oggi, sebbene nel ciclo di battitura siano impiegate tecnologie sofisticate e macchinari all’avanguardia, il passaggio di rifinitura delle foglie d’oro viene ancora realizzato a mano, utilizzando diversi tipi di martelli e la maestria di artigiani che riescono a regalare al metallo la leggerezza di uno chiffon.
For fifteen generations, the Manetti family has represented the highest expression of the goldbeater’s craft. Since 1602, when Matteo Manetti curated the restoration of the gold sphere that surmounts Brunelleschi’s dome, the family has been occupied with the transformation of the ingot into leaf. Even today, although sophisticated technologies and cutting-edge machinery are used in the beating cycle, the process for finishing gold leaf is still carried out by hand by skilled craftsmen using different types of hammers to give the metal the lightness of chiffon.
