The 100 most popular graduate employers in Singapore

How were these rankings compiled? Based on Singapore’s most comprehensive and extensive survey of student opinion on graduate careers, jobs and employers, read on to find out how top companies can benefit you, and how the rankings work.

F

or the past nine years, Singapore’s 100 team has surveyed fresh graduates and students at institutions of higher learning to find out and reveal the best companies, firms and organisations that piqued their interest as they crossed from academia to the working world. Promoted on www.singapores100.com as well as by university career centres and social media – and, just as importantly, word of mouth by students among each other – this support and anonymous answers, key to honest insights to career goals and job seeking habits, guarantees our Singapore Graduate Barometer survey is seen and completed by thousands of students each year from all universities across Singapore.

This system was developed to resemble the career choice processes most students and graduates would participate in to make decisions on which employer to choose. However, not only does it build the list of Singapore’s top 100 employers from one to 100, it also grants us – and you – a chance to see how companies rank among themselves in their own sectors, as well as compare them. Field research took place between June 2018 to February 2019.

While it takes the students just 15 minutes to complete the survey, the sheer amount of responses provides a high degree of accuracy, as well as meaningful conclusions on student preferences, ethics and values.

On top of that, we can also observe what first year students want in comparison to students in their penultimate or final years, and even study correlations between gender and preference for jobs. Additionally, we can also contemplate any dissimilarities between student learning and habits, such as how biotech students keeping an eye out for positions in research and development learn and find out about job opportunities as compared to students anxious to enter the public sector.

Students are either given a hyperlink to the questionnaire or a printed version at career centres or events and fairs to fill in, but unlike most employer brand surveys, are asked first which sector they are interested in applying to. After that, they are asked to disclose which organisations or firms they have their eyes on.

But getting more than 13,800 students to complete a survey is not easy, so why do we go through this gruelling process every year? Our answer is that we hope employers looking to understand student mind-sets more will find these results useful and fascinating, and serve to spark conversations within industries about how they are

Accounting and Financial Management Graduate accountants can work for a variety of employers – in an accountancy firm, in-house within industries, or in the public sector.

ll types of businesses and organisations require accountants to ensure that the company or group is financially sound and compliant with all relevant and up-to-date legislation, and, as such, accountants can either be found providing financial services to other businesses and organisations from accountancy firms, or in businesses ranging from large multinationals to small businesses. On the other hand, accountants in the public sector work for authorities and governmental bodies, making sure public money is used responsibly. No matter who your employer is, you will have an influence on a business’ strategic development through your assessment of their finances. Some accountants specialise in one area of practice, such as assurance, auditing, tax and insolvency, but accountants can also focus on a business area, such as management accounting – to help managers plan and budget ahead – and forensic accounting, which investigates possible financial fraud. Moreover, depending on your specialisation and your employer, you may not spend all your time behind a desk. For example, if you are with an accountancy firm, you will be visiting clients at their premises for a considerable bulk of your work hours. Graduates who wish to pursue their career in this sector also have a wide range of certification and programmes to choose from, offered by multiple professional bodies in this sector.

Opportunities for graduates Graduate accountants have the opportunity to work with the Big Four and smaller accountancy firms in both the public and private sectors. You can even pursue accounting certifications if you do not have a related degree. However, a common path to becoming a practising accountant is to apply for a graduate programme with an accountancy firm. On occasion, companies expose graduates to all functions or departments through a series of rotations, and there are public and private companies that hire graduates for accountancy roles in the finance department as well. Graduates typically work within a firm while they complete a professional qualification, either on a training programme or in a junior position. Usually, the training is rotational to give exposure to all functions of the business. Be mindful that starting out as a graduate accountant within a big firm can be intense due to the combination of picking up the ropes at work while also furthering your studies and tackling examinations. Students who are interested in the accounting field should have strong analytical, teamwork, communication and organisational skills. It is also important for graduates to be up-to-date with financial technology and its risks and opportunities, requiring strategic views and insights.

upply chains handle the fast, safe and efficient movement of goods, materials and services while transport planning and management oversee the designing of systems that move people and cargo through land, air and sea. Some employers in this sector include logistics and distribution companies, manufacturers, transport companies, retail and consumer goods chains and courier services. Within transport planning, the main employers are local authorities, specialist consultancies, civil engineering firms and transport providers. Singapore, as a global destination, provides many opportunities to thoroughly understand the supply chain and logistics operations of local and international businesses, such as Singapore’s Industry Transport Map for the logistics sector that aims to strengthen productivity and innovation through the use of technologies like artificial intelligence and collaborative robotics. Moreover, the emergence of new delivery capabilities, such as autonomous vehicles and 3D printing, are likely to impact logistics and the design of supply chains. T and technology has always been known to drive innovation and development, and graduates looking to enter this field can expect to work in a dynamic and ever-evolving industry. The constant evolution and innovation of technology may also lead to exciting careers in IT, so graduates may get the opportunity to work with cutting-edge tools and knowledge to transform the world. Moreover, with Singapore offering one of the most diverse talent pools in Asia, the city is a perfect incubator for IT and tech companies to expand their business in the region. Accordingly, Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) has revealed that 80 out of the world’s top 100 tech firms have operations in the country, with growing investments. Empowering, Learning and Educating In the Ministry of Education, although supporting and impacting students takes top priority, there are more than enough opportunities to learn.

K

nown for its nobility, the education industry is a melting pot of educators who have known, and maintained relationships with, each other for a long time. As Pearlyn Lim, Head of Department (HOD) for English Language and Literature in Fuchun Secondary School put it, “where else would you have colleagues you have known 10 years from your first day of work because they were your teachers when you were in school?” Having been part of the Ministry of Education (MOE) for 17 years, she added that besides being able to work with her exteachers, one of the many rewards of the profession was the ability to journey with colleagues who were once her students. Apart from the meaningful connections, Lim also finds the industry to be a dynamic one, with a variety of different environments one can choose to work in within the sector itself.

Similarly, Suriana Binte Othman, Senior School Counsellor of Chua Chu Kang Primary School, benefitted from the variety, beginning her two-decade career with MOE as a teacher before moving on to counselling. But being part of MOE is more than just having many different roles to choose from – it’s keeping the hearts and wellbeing of the students in mind, shaping young lives in more ways than one.

A universal lesson Pearlyn Lim “[For exposure,] I can work at the MOE Headquarters, or conduct research in the National Institute of Education (NIE), or even apply to join the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) to see what they are doing with the national exams,” she disclosed, revealing that the abundance of opportunities within MOE widened her view of the education landscape and injected variety to her career.

With more than a decade in the education sector under her belt, Lim moved across two different schools as a teacher and MOE’s Headquarters as a Curriculum Planning Officer before she took on the role of HOD. As one who has taught different students across schools and streams, Lim shared that she had to quickly adjust her teaching style to suit the abilities of her students. However, one lesson that stayed with her throughout her career was learning to appreciate the optimal conditions that must be met for effective learning to take place.

“When the weather is hot, the students will be tired and they won’t want to do their work. This is when the teacher needs to conduct lessons that involve more physical movement so that the students remain wide awake.” This included learning to relate to and love the students to ensure a level of trust and familiarity between them. “Thanks to my students, my playlist is always updated, and I also know a number of celebrities,” she recalled, saying that knowing about the same celebrities her students look up to allows her to connect better with them. But there was also an embarrassing incident, Lim recollected with a chuckle, when she accidentally mispronounced a pop star’s name, calling her “Taylor Smith” instead. The episode is still ingrained in her mind, as is her students’ laughter. She further explained that as a teacher, it is important for her to know her students personally to show that she cares for them, and is a person they can turn to.

“Being present with the students is of the utmost importance. You really need to listen to them, understand their needs, and work with them to achieve their goals,” she declared. “As a teacher, there are specific goals and learning outcomes you will want your students to achieve. However, the same cannot be said for counselling. For some students, they need more time and may require professional intervention in trying to resolve their issues.” “Younger students are not able to think of their futures. Instead, they think of whether they like you or not. If they like you, they will study for you,” Lim said, explaining that she had learnt to make time for each one of them, and especially so for the ones who were unable to focus in class. “This inability to focus may stem from problems they face at home and carry to school – perhaps some receive cold shoulders at home. Students need to feel loved in school first before they are prepared to learn anything in class,” she explained, highlighting the important role all teachers have to play.

Call to counsel For some of us, one calling leads to another. Othman, one of the people in this category, started her career as a General Primary School Teacher before becoming a School Counsellor in 2007. She has been Chua Chu Kang Primary School’s Senior School Counsellor since 2015.

Fulfilment

Ensuring the standard As the school’s HOD, Lim introduced team vetting in her department. This process involves the teachers, teaching the subject at the same level, to sit for a draft exam paper without access to the answer scheme, as a way to vet the paper. Only after they have attempted the paper “blind” are they given the answer scheme to compare and critique, in a face-to-face meeting. “The paper is thus examined and challenged by colleagues. At the same time, the teacher who set the paper would have to defend it too. That way, the end product – the paper – is tightened up in terms of its quality,” Lim asserted. According to Othman, if there is one value she has built up in her over the years, it would be patience. “I have to be patient and to listen more carefully during counselling sessions to better connect with my students,” she explained. But Othman also stated that there are “no quick fixes” in addressing students’ issues, quoting from the School Counselling handbook that “it takes time to build a culture which promotes positive help-seeking, peer support and understanding that behavioural issues often have deeper roots which take time to heal.”

Suriana Binte Othman She voiced, “I switched my role to that of a school counsellor as I wanted to help students manage their socio-emotional well-being so that they can be engaged in a meaningful and enriching life in the future.” When asked how teaching has helped her in counselling, Othman said that although both are student-focussed, the approach used is different, reminiscing that she used a more direct approach towards her students when she was a primary school teacher. That approach, however, was not applicable when she became a School Counsellor. Instead, she made use of her specialised skills and strategies to build therapeutic relationships with her students to ensure their willingness and engagement during counselling sessions.

Despite the many challenges, Othman still stands firm in her decision to move from teaching to counselling, and even credits her experience as a teacher for helping her conduct classroom talks – a requirement for school counsellors – with students across all levels. “I love teaching, but I do not regret moving on to counselling. Instead, I now have the opportunity to value-add because I can reach out to [more] students at different levels,” Othman said. And like Othman, Lim has no plans to move away from the education industry. “I get to interact with young people, and I like the energy they give. You cannot be in this job for the money,” Lim elaborated. “I stay on because educators, perhaps due to the nature of our job, are generally nurturing and kind – we are all good people here. We serve one another as we interact, and it is a pleasant environment to be in.”

Challenges to generate growth Challenges often come hand-in-hand with personal and career growth. With good performance, career paths can be accelerated, and OCBC’s Graduate Talents (GTs) are able to fast-track their careers to where they want to be in as little as 24 months, giving them an edge over the rest.

Edwin Lee A GT who joined the Bank in 2016 with Group Audit, Internal Auditor Edwin Lee found himself working on projects that required him to communicate with colleagues either much older or more experienced than him. Thus, as a fresh graduate with limited experience and expertise in the banking

industry who also had to juggle the views of fellow auditors and audit clients, Lee quickly learnt how to listen actively. “During project discussions, active listening is essential as it allows you to understand each other’s perspective and discover new ways to make things better,” he explained, adding that it also “allows you to gain stakeholders’ trust in your ability and persuade them to think differently.” Muhammad Zaki, who also entered the Graduate Talent Programme (GTP) in 2017 under Group Operations & Technology, recollected how he was asked to lead a major project within six months of starting. “I didn’t know what was expected of me, and I didn’t know anything about this application given to my team to update. I didn’t even know the changes needed to be made!” The jovial and bubbly man confessed. Although limited knowledge of the required expertise left him hesitant, Zaki took up the challenge. While he likened it to diving into the deep end of a pool, by the end of the project, he had not only managed to deliver, but also improve processes.

“Looking back, the project really gave me a holistic view of what Information Technology (IT) in banking actually does from end-toend, both from a user’s and a business’ perspective,” He reminisced. “I didn’t know the processes well at the beginning – it was all new to me. But it was from leading this project that I got the hang of it.” Today, Zaki has grown from a fresh graduate to a key contributor within the Systems Delivery team, while Lee is now in Group Audit’s Credit Risk Review (CRR) department, advocating for governance and control within the bank as an independent voice.

Opportunities through exposure While job rotations are not unique to OCBC, what’s different about job rotations in the GTP is that each rotation is customised to the individual. Through stints in core banking functions like Branch Banking, Compliance and Operations as well as at least one other rotation within the GT’s home division,

Lim Lay Hong, Project Manager of Group Operations & Technology, currently sits on the GT selection committee for her division. Coming from a pure IT background, she explains why job rotations are important. “Banking is huge. You have banking functions, such as consumer, corporate or investment banking, and you have non-banking functions such as portfolio management and other utility functions. You cannot be too focused on one area – there is every opportunity to learn, and an openness to do so is crucial.” “I believe that rotations across departments to understand different functions of the bank is important to a fresh graduate, as you may not have seen or be exposed to different parts, or even know what you may be really interested in,” Lee added. “It trains you to be an agile thinker and to be resourceful. You will get to know people from different divisions through the programme’s job rotations, so you can ask your network for advice on how things work. There is collaborative learning, and you also learn how to adapt and be able to contribute quickly,” he continued. Besides job rotations, the programme also brings all GTs from around the region together for the intense Regional Talent Week. Having been part of the first batch, Zaki shared that he had had the opportunity

to meet and work closely with his fellow GTP peers across the region from countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong SAR on a business project – specially designed to give GTs additional exposure and edge, as well as wider perspectives beyond usual roles and responsibilities – that was ultimately presented to senior leaders in the bank. “We were given the business model of a company to analyse and apply to OCBC. You have to understand where the bank is moving towards, and it was interesting as we had to think from the management’s point-ofview. For example, this is what the assigned company does, but how can OCBC leverage opportunities from this situation and bring this company on board such that we can expand our portfolio?” Beyond the GTP, Lee co-led the MultiGeneration Workforce project to explore

Lim Lay Hong the different working styles across various generations of employees found in OCBC. “We wanted to find out where the areas of friction and synergies were so we could work better together, and how we can communicate and improve on that. So far, it’s still ongoing,” he elaborated, “Through our work, we highlighted the differences between generations, sharing that though working styles differ, the aim and goal between generations are still the same.”

Culture of learning, culture of care Though both Zaki and Lee have now graduated from the GTP and are progressing

well in their careers with OCBC, they were quick to acknowledge that learning does not only take place there. OCBC has over 10,000 learning courses available to employees, and, in 2018, invested in a $20 million three-year programme, the OCBC Future Smart Programme, to develop the digital skills of all its employees in order to prepare a Future Ready workforce. Lim, who is also a mentor to new GTs in her division remarked, “Besides drive, you need to be open-minded and have a willingness to innovate and change. We have people with non-IT backgrounds who joined us, and who are very successful today in IT because OCBC can offer comprehensive training.” “Although our GTs may feel as though they are thrown into the deep end during the programme by being asked to lead and drive initiatives, it is designed that way as the bank would be entrusting them with even more important projects in the future. But OCBC also has a deeply ingrained culture of being caring and supportive. So, you are not alone,” she added. To this, Zaki pointed out that there was strong support and group mentorship that helped to guide him along. Citing the mentorship and support that was available to him during his programme as the impetus he needed to give back, Zaki returned as a mentor during 2019’s Regional Week. “Because he has gone through the programme and survived to see the results, he’s now able to give the new cohort of graduates some good advice!” Lim laughed. On what her advice would be to young graduates who are interested in applying for OCBC’s GTP, she said, “Regardless of your area of studies, we will support you with a customised development path that has been designed for you to pick up a broad range of skills during your 24-month journey. You will have mentors, and you will grow your support network beyond your division and region through the programme design. It will be an exciting journey for anyone ready to come on-board!”

Fresh Ideas from Staying Curious Curiosity and a thirst for knowledge are just some of the attributes Visa looks for.

s one of the largest global payments technology organisations in the world, Visa was the very first to bring debit, credit and prepaid cards to the world. Now, Visa has become a home to individuals intrigued by technology and keen to disrupt and innovate in the fintech industry. But for Visa, the want to pioneer and develop is not enough.

“We look at intellectual horsepower,” she agreed. “But I think those who are curious, who are always asking questions, the ones who really have the thirst to learn more are the kind of people we are looking at.”

Constant innovation

It starts with curiosity According to Charmaine Chan, Business Development Executive, Digital Partnerships in Visa, just joining the organisation by itself requires a healthy sense of curiosity from candidates. “It’s something that you normally wouldn’t pay attention to in your daily life,” she explained. “Sure, you have a card and you make payments every day when you buy food or go to a movie, but how often do people play attention to what goes on between your card and the terminal?” And that is something Aneet Kaur, Visa’s Director of Global University Relations supports wholeheartedly.

“A lot of people that I work with are very helpful. They give me ideas on how to improve on the questions, improve on the solutions, improve on the several different aspects that doesn’t always come to me as a fresh graduate.”

Charmaine Chan While this logic may seem a little irrelevant as Visa is such a big company in terms of both business and technology, there are legitimate reasons behind this stance. According to Hoo Yuan Yang, Senior Software Engineer (Network Processing, Technology), it is because there is always room for improvement.

With curiosity running rampant through the company, innovation has become part of the culture – and it shows. “In a typical day, I code, ask some questions, get some reviews done, continue coding. Sounds more fun than it actually is – programming is pretty challenging, it’s pretty fun. If there’s no coding, I get to design the systems, architect it.” And Visa keeps the flow of innovation uninterrupted by opening more junior positions, consistently bringing in fresh hires and graduates directly from universities, and empowering and encouraging them to embrace technology, explore, innovate, ask questions and, most importantly, do things out of the box.

“That’s literally why they employed us!” Hoo laughed. “They’re always saying that we’re not employed to do something our predecessors are doing – that we’re not employed to do things other people are more experienced at. We’re employed to give fresh ideas, to try and improve processes, to try and make things more efficient.”

she enthused. “That being said, they also sponsored my overseas work experience in the United States with Visa Headquarters in San Francisco for six months.” And while both Hoo and Chan agreed that their respective learning curves were steep, they also credited Visa for its unwavering support.

Development and support When Hoo originally joined Visa as a summer intern, he had been struck by the amount of care and attentiveness interns were given. “The team really put in a lot of effort – they were very meticulous in planning my time there with them. Before I went in, they had prepared a few tasks for me to work on, and when I actually went in, they calibrated my skill sets, my skill level, took a look at how competent I was, and assigned the relevant jobs to me,” he said. Visa, on their part, did not give Hoo any easy jobs just because he was an intern – instead they gave him a real-world project. “It’s something that they’re currently using,” he proudly revealed. “They are still using something that I developed as an intern four years ago, and it’s something that means a lot to me.”

Hoo Yuan Yang Chan, on the other hand, was part of the two-year Graduate Development Programme (GDP). “I took on four rotations as part of that, and one of the most memorable experiences was really the opportunity to work in a completely different continent with Visa,”

Aneet Kaur “A lot of on-the-job training was provided to us, and being able to go for training courses at the company allowed me to perform at the same level as everyone else,” Chan disclosed. “And Visa University really provides you with resources for anything you want,” Hoo added. “If I have a doubt on technology, I go there. If I have a business doubt, I go there.” Good management and the organisation’s emphasis on inclusion also played a role in their development, and there were times, Hoo said, his managers would push opportunities at him before advising, citing development, progression and something else to add to his resume. Chan’s managers were also willing to look beyond her job scope and she was given the opportunity to organise Visa’s participation at Money 20/20’s Las Vegas hackathon, the largest fintech event in the world. “My managers were super supportive and they basically gave me the platform and voice by either representing me to other parties to give me the opportunity or allowing me to take time off my original projects to pursue another opportunity and make it successful,” she said.

A word of advice When asked what the most important qualities a graduate or fresh hire should have in the fintech industry, Hoo said it should be communication and an aptitude for learning while Chan pointed to curiosity and attitude. “Never be afraid to learn. Ask the questions because you really have nothing to lose as a fresh hire. We all start off from nothing, and there’s this wealth of experience over here. If you don’t tap into it, you’re losing out. If you ask questions, you have nothing to lose and everything else to gain. Don’t be so afraid of the stigma, of the stereotype of asking questions that might not make you look good. That’s not true. I have my senior staff and senior directors all learning new technologies every day. In fact, some of them tell me about new technologies that I haven’t even explored,” he stated. “And you absolutely need communication, because if you don’t ask, you really have everything to lose.” Kaur agreed with him, saying: “Absolutely ignore the stigma. The expectation is that you’re young, you’re bringing in fresh ideas, and that can only come out when you ask questions. When you’re curious, don’t feel shy about it at all because at the end of the day, everybody is here to help you and make sure you’re successful because your success is also the company’s success.” “Just be able to embrace change. This industry is expanding so quickly, and there are so many new companies these days that are coming into the fold and offering new payment experiences and then approaching Visa to figure out how they can use those services,” Chan offered. “Where previously clients of Visa would include banks and more banks, today, there are all kinds. There could be e-commerce marketplaces, social networks or virtual banks. There are so many new kinds of clients coming up that curiosity and embracing change makes sense.”

Networking is key Ng Kian Hui EXPERIENCE MAY PLAY A BIG PART IN KIAN HUI’S CAREER, BUT HE BELIEVES NETWORKING SHOULD TAKE CENTRE STAGE.

Getting started I developed an interest in the profession after I took up a course in National Service. As a science student, I found it interesting to be able to relate accounting topics to the business and commercial aspects. Subsequently, I studied for a Bachelor of Accountancy in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and came to understand that accounting is definitely more than just “number crunching.” Before I joined BDO Singapore in 2012, I was with PwC Beijing. Working in China was a great experience and I believe my professional development was accelerated there, but after taking my three children to consideration, I decided to return to Singapore and accept the audit partner role BDO offered. It took some time to readapt and reconnect with old friends and contacts, but with the help of colleagues and friends, my transition was smoother than expected. Initial challenges The initial challenges I faced when I first started was keeping pace with multiple deadlines and meeting client expectations. With the help of my seniors and mentors, I learnt to better prioritise my tasks on hand and keep up constant communication with various stakeholders. I have also come to the realisation that it is always important to establish and maintain good working relationships with all stakeholders as well as hone the ability to communicate issues upfront to manage expectations more effectively. My turning point Joining BDO as an audit partner when I returned to Singapore was a turning point in my career. Now, I travel to various countries, such as the ASEAN nations, Switzerland and Belgium, to name a few, to meet with the management and BDO counterparts who assist in the audit. This opportunity to work with clients and colleagues from different

countries has further broadened my horizons and honed my skills in interaction and building relationships across countries and cultures. I also took on a role that provides technical accounting and auditing advice to fellow audit partners, so I have to keep myself updated on the new accounting standards coming into effect and leverage on the experience I gained over the years. This exposure and experience with BDO set me up well to take on my current role as Head of Audit to spearhead the sustainable growth of our audit practice through attracting more talents, expanding client portfolios and providing excellent client services through quality deliverables.

of language and how to use more jargon in a business context. Networking is also an important skill. My network serves as a good sounding board, providing valuable perspectives so that I can better understand and assess potential business opportunities. Advice for graduates As someone who is still in the early stage of your career, it is important to develop yourself technically and professionally. However, it is equally important to develop the ability to connect with people and build relationships with colleagues, peers and business associates. Take the time to understand your friends and contacts better. It may be challenging for new graduates in the workforce as you learn how to handle new roles on top of networking. However, if you set one key priority and make a conscious effort to set aside time for it, it should be manageable. Building relationships need not exclusive to a session or an organised event; regular dealings with colleagues and friends may set the tone for the relationship, so if you are always positive and sincere towards them, it will definitely leave a good impression and it will be easier for you to connect at more a personal level. There is a saying, “It is not what you know that matters, but who you know”. As you progress through your career, the contacts and connections you build will be a supportive element to keep you going and open more doors.

Growing on the job Terence Teo ACCORDING TO TERENCE, GRADUATES SHOULD ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS AND NEVER CONFINE THEMSELVES

Getting started I joined CapitaLand as a Management Trainee in 2009 after graduating from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. I have always been interested in finding out how things work, problem solving and turning solutions into reality. However, I couldn’t seem to find a job that had all these aspects. Later, a networking event organised by CapitaLand got me interested in the real estate industry, and from there, I joined CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP), which gave me the opportunity to work on development projects across different asset classes and countries. Having been on the development and technical track for almost 10 years now, I am currently a staff officer in the Group CEO office. Challenges As a perfectionist straight out of university who wanted to cover all work requests from all angles, learning how to prioritise when everything seemed equally important was definitely a challenge. I soon found myself in a cycle that drained my energy and as a result, I was stressed. Fortunately, I had a good mentor during my stint as a Management Trainee, and I learnt to discern the important tasks from the urgent ones. This is something I call effective prioritisation. The turning point I believe that when one is passionate about his or her job, there should be no need to plan for a turning point per se. There was no “sharp” turning point in my career, but I believe my incremental efforts at work have led me to my current path.

My biggest achievements Over the past 10 years, I have grown tremendously under the strong leadership and guidance from many within the company. I have learnt from the best-in-class, in both the technical as well as management aspects of the real estate business. I was also given the opportunity to gain professional experience in Singapore and China. On a personal level, I am now a proud father of two boys. Advice for graduates “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” Our time is limited, so always have the hunger to learn. Do not be contented with the status quo. Be foolish, ask questions, and think big without being confined to what others deem is the limit.

A leader’s important skills The most fundamental skill is from the word itself – to lead, effectively. There is a fine line between leading and commanding or driving. It is easy to command, drive and micromanage. But to be a true leader, you will need to lead with conviction and sincerity, and walk the talk to create an environment of certainty with your fellow colleagues. The next thing you need to do is to sustain the leadership where you continue to inspire and motivate employees in making sure they keep growing and moving forward.

Embracing diversity in the workplace Lim Siew Lian SIEW LIAN BELIEVES THAT EMPLOYEES NOT ONLY NEED TO FEEL VALUED – THEY NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR WORK CONTRIBUTES TO THE ORGANISATION.

Getting started When I was in Junior College (JC), my strongest subjects were mathematics and science, so when I entered university, engineering seemed like the natural choice for me. My first job was as a Senior Officer in SCDF’s Operations Department. After four years, I wanted to move on and try something new. At that time, I came across the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the role of a project engineer sounded interesting to me. As cliché as it may sound, I have always liked the airport and used to study there when I was still a student and lived in the East. I tried my luck by submitting my resume on the online portal, was shortlisted for an interview, and subsequently, clinched the job.

functional design study to translate what was then only a masterplan to a full-fledged floor by floor layout plan which fulfilled the capacity and operational requirements. We also explored many options as part of the study, and it has since served as a guide as well as baseline in current design development for T5. Another memorable moment was reviewing the master plan developed for the Budget Terminal (BT) and how the evolving aviation landscape, especially the strong and sustained growth of the Low Cost Carrier sector, led to a major review of the adequacy of BT not just in the short term, but also in the mid to long term. This led to what we now know as Terminal 4 (T4), which opened in 2017.

Challenges I faced Airport planning is quite a specialised role that requires picking up skills on the job. When I first joined the Changi Airport Group, I struggled with airport terminology such as runway, taxiway, taxi-lane, parking stand, apron, and other terms. It helped when I attended the airport engineering course organised by the Singapore Aviation Academy, and I also learnt through on-the-job trainings with colleagues.

The turning point I truly think that wisdom and enlightenment do come with age and experience. As I moved along, I realised I no longer got upset at things that would have made me so when I was younger. This was because I learnt to think and care more for people, and now, when I make decisions, I would also consider how it would affect others as well.

Times may get rough, but everything can be solved with a smile and constant communication. While I strongly believe that every individual is outstanding in their own way, we are stronger as a team when we learn to embrace each person for their unique strengths and weaknesses. That is how we can all learn and grow together.

Important skills as a leader I think a leader is someone who cares deeply both in terms of the quality of work – I see T5 as a product – and the people who make the “magic” happen. You don’t lead by rank, but by sincerity, and I think others will know if you are truly a genuine person who believes that people not only want to be valued, but want to understand how their work is contributing to the organisation. If you don’t make the effort to explain the background and context as to why you are doing something, it will be hard for the person who has been given the task to perform, appreciate and learn from it.

My biggest achievement Presently, it is the opportunity to be involved in the Terminal 5 (T5) project – and it is indeed an exciting challenge. Back in 2014 and 2015 with only a small planning team of four people, we worked on the mammoth

Beginnings I joined the DBS Management Associate Programme upon graduation from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and my first rotation as a product manager of Consumer Deposits and Payments provided the opportunity to lead various projects, such as the launch of Fast and Secure Transfers (FAST), an electronic funds transfer service, across the industry in 2014. In addition to the acquisition of technical knowledge pertaining to product management and data analytics, this role also taught me the importance of soft skills such as stakeholder management and adaptability. These are valuable skills that have been transferrable across all the roles that I have taken on thus far. Challenges and takeaways I was fortunate my supervisors gave me the opportunity to take on leadership roles very early in my career. But this came with its set of challenges, with the greatest being the need to command respect, and consequently, the trust of more experienced and senior colleagues to ensure effective collaboration. I constantly had to remind myself to add value to stakeholders I came across, as well as demonstrate empathy during discussions. However, on hindsight, it was rather apparent that I strived to achieve consensus in meetings I participated in. While this worked well most of the time, perhaps I should have been bold enough to challenge some views upfront and be a voice of dissent to encourage meaningful discussions.

A turning point After spending six years in various roles across Consumer Banking, I was looking to try something new and the DBS Talent Management team encouraged me to apply for a stretch assignment via the Strategic Talent Assignment and Rotation (STAR) Programme – that was definitely a turning point in my career. It opened doors to Corporate Banking and offered me the opportunity to work in China, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing markets.

Important skills to have To me, leaders should always put the interests of the organisation and its purpose before themselves. They should also exhibit personal humility even while displaying the willpower and ability to convince others to move toward the organisation’s ambition. As such, it is necessary to be strong in the technical fundamentals of whatever industry one is in. I would also encourage aspiring leaders to always dedicate their time to honing their soft skills as this would go a long way in their careers. A word of advice Always be hungry for more. Very often, what ultimately distinguishes successful individuals from others is simply their hunger to do more at various stages of their careers. At the same time, I would urge fresh graduates to always be open to a variety of opportunities as there is just so much to be learnt from any role – no matter how seemingly big or small – at this early stage.

How I started During my undergraduate years, I had vague ideas about what I want to do and who I wanted to be in the future, so I chose psychology as my major in school out of my own interest. However, what kind of job I would be able to find with this degree was the least of my concerns. I was passive in job hunting as I knew very clearly that all the top-notch jobs were probably taken by people who had better grades than me, or those who happened to be in a “practical” field of study. In the last year of my studies, I received a phone call from a telemarketer. After that, I found myself sitting in front of a Financial Planning Profession leader, being asked the following question: “If in ten years, one of your family members were to undergo surgery, who do you think will pay for that?” In that scenario, in ten years’ time, my parents would have retired. I, being the only child in the family, of course, would have to take over this financial burden. This was because I knew that my parents were never believers of insurance. They do not have any insurance coverage at all. That was the first time insurance started to make sense to me. It was about having independence, choices, dignity, and love for those you cared about. In 2011, I passed the necessary examinations and joined my leader, even before I completed my final school exams. I consider myself the lucky one, as not everyone will be able to find their perfect job, working environment, leader and colleagues right out of school. I quickly learnt and picked up the essential skills and knowledge required to give my clients the best advice possible. My career then started as a Financial Advisor.

Enjoying it Believe it or not, I do not recall any real challenges. Although there were trials and errors along the way, I took, and still take, them as part of this wonderful character building and personal growth process. If you really enjoy doing something, you wouldn’t find the trial and error process burdensome. The turning point I was very comfortable being a Financial Advisor, focussing on my own job scope and improving my own performance. When I got wind of the idea that I could be promoted to Senior Manager and lead a team, I was not so excited initially. I was worried about whether I could handle the new responsibilities that would follow.

Being in a leadership role is not just about my own performance as it would involve more people. I was also doubtful as to whether I could pull them together as a team, and whether I would be able to maximise their potential and help them achieve their own personal goals. But after much consideration, I took up the role. As I consider myself a beneficiary of the financial planning profession and good mentorship, I thought it was important for new Financial Advisors to experience that, and have a much higher chance to succeed rather than learning the hard way.

Getting started I graduated in 2014 with an electrical and electronic degree, and I was drawn to SMRT’s Engineering and Management Associates programme as it provided a structured induction which helped me bridge the experience gap from a fresh graduate to a working professional. In the programme, I was exposed to engagement with senior management from different business units, which gave me good insight into how the different business units contribute to the public transport business. After I was assigned to the power maintenance team as an executive engineer, there was a constant focus on developing each engineer’s management skills as well as technical engineering capability.

“ I would advise fresh graduates to embrace challenges, as they teach us priceless lessons.” As an electrical engineer specialising in power, I started my career with the SMRT Power maintenance department. My role as a power executive engineer was to ensure the reliability of the power system in SMRT. Behind the scenes, this job was challenging as every second counts whenever a power fault occurs. Our stress levels peak during the troubleshooting process, but there is always a high level of satisfaction once we manage to get the power system recovered without delay. Challenges I faced The greatest challenge I faced early in my career was doubting myself about whether I was a good engineer and whether I was ready to lead. As a young engineer, there was a steep learning curve when it came to troubleshooting faults and leading the assistant engineer and technical officer on my team.

Eventually, I realised the key to overcoming those challenges was my attitude. By being humble and not afraid to ask questions, that’s how you gain the knowledge you need. Likewise, you gain the necessary experience for the job when you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty and dive into the work. The knowledge and experience I gained that way have been valuable to my career progression. The turning point As I continued to build my technical engineering capabilities, I eventually shifted focus to a role as an engineering leader when my supervisor gave me the opportunity to take on an acting section manager role in 2016. The role was a new challenge for me, as I had to manage over 50 staff and be accountable for the reliability, manpower, budgets and maintenance of the power system for the East West Line. It was a huge responsibility, but my supervisor spent a lot of time guiding me to make sure I was ready for the role. Yet she made sure I still had the freedom to make decisions on the job, so that I could grow professionally. My biggest achievement In 2016, I was tasked with setting up a power maintenance team for the Tuas Extension Line. It was a challenging yet meaningful task, as the operation of the Tuas extension line would allow commuters to travel to Tuas much easier. I treaded into new territory with a team of four assistant engineers in a temporary holding office. The learning curve was steep as I had to familiarise myself with a new railway power system, as well as hire engineers, set up processes and build a strong team culture. The team and I worked through countless nights and weekends in order to meet the tight deadline for the start of line operations. There was tremendous satisfaction when I looked back at the team’s achievements. We grew from a mere four-man team to a strong 18-man team motivated to ensure a reliable power system on the Tuas extension line.

Important skills as a leader A leader should have empathy and yet be firm when making decisions. When I was first tasked to take up a system replacement project which was valued at more than a million dollars, I was not ready to make decisions on my own. I had to consult my then-supervisor very frequently. She never questioned my capability, and was always empathetic and very generous with her advice and guidance. This helped me build up my confidence level over time. Yet, when a bad decision was made during the execution of the project, my supervisor made a firm decision to stop the work and rectify things despite the fact that we were operating on a tight timeline. The leadership she showed then has been a great example for me since, and has motivated me to learn from my mistakes and build my resilience to propel myself further. Advice for graduates I would advise fresh graduates to embrace challenges, as they teach us priceless lessons on the job. Be humble yet firm when it comes to making decisions, and always have an open mind towards receiving criticism.

Using variety to keep learning Wing Ching How EMBRACING AN AGILE LEARNING ATTITUDE AND OPENNESS TO CHANGE IS CRITICAL IN HIS INDUSTRY, ACCORDING TO CHING HOW.

Getting started I studied Business, specialising in Banking and Finance, with the initial notion of joining a bank, but was ultimately drawn to the wide exposure offered by the Visa Graduate Development Programme (GDP). Other considerations were the strength of the Visa brand, business model and authenticity of employees I encountered. My first role as part of the programme was as a Payment System Risk analyst to cover for a colleague who had gone on maternity leave. This proved to be a fantastic learning experience as I was exposed to the full scope of a regular employee while still being supported by a nurturing team. Initial challenges When I first started, the knowledge gap between myself and other employees seemed insurmountable as payments is a fairly niche industry with a small but deeply experienced labour force. Being part of a rotational programme helped tremendously as I rapidly experienced different areas of the business, and at the same time, benefitted from diverse perspectives across the organisation. But on hindsight, a more deliberate effort to address specific learning topics and pick the brains of more colleagues would have definitely helped me to move through the learning curve faster. My turning point In 2014, I faced two very attractive but very different paths. One led to product specialisation and supporting an established business unit with experienced leaders while the other was on functional leadership in an international frontier market. Ultimately, my mentor gave me the push I needed to go after the role in the frontier market by boosting my confidence, reminding me that staying in one’s comfort zone never got anyone anywhere, and saying: “If they didn’t think

you are equipped to succeed, they wouldn’t have offered this option!” I continued to be based in Singapore until 2017, when my newlywed wife and I relocated to Myanmar. Boarding a plane with a oneway ticket is very different from a shortterm assignment, but a supportive wife, understanding employers and managers – both hers and mine – and an all-star team waiting on the other side definitely helped. At the end of 2018, after leading Merchant Sales & Acquiring for four years, I repatriated back to Singapore. Looking back, opting to pursue the “riskier” market role benefitted me tremendously as it provided critical opportunities to establish my credibility early in my career and gain a deep appreciation of the multi-faceted work in markets.

Through developing detailed strategies, deep client partnerships, solid teamwork, and a good dash of trial and error, I helped to establish the first merchant acceptance points beyond the hotel industry, quadrupling the number of Visa accepting merchants in the process. The icing on the cake was the invaluable overseas working experience and lifelong friendships built.

Lastly, I subscribe to the saying “everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” While thorough preparation and planning are important, listening skills and an openness to change in response to new information or perspectives will help maximise success. Getting started I majored in Media and Communications at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and even then, I knew I wanted a career where I could manage my time and be able to interact with different individuals while adding value to their lives. Because I understood the importance of insurance, I chose to work in this industry to promote the welfare of individuals when I graduated. The reason why I chose AIA is because it is a longstanding brand in the industry and is one of the largest life insurers in Singapore. I also liked the fact that AIA puts its customers on the forefront of everything they do, which aligns with my passion and work ethics. Being a Financial Services Consultant all these years has made me feel great, knowing that what I’ve done had benefitted so many lives, proving that all my hard work is meaningful, and that my perseverance in this career is worth it. About my role My job is to share financial literacy with others and how I can assist them in their protection or assets accumulation needs. I try my best to have meetings daily, either to meet new prospects or existing customers for servicing appointments over casual meals or coffee with no work agenda, but just to have catch-up sessions and build a rapport with my customers. On days where I do not have meetings arranged or when I’m in between meetings, I will go to the office to complete paperwork or prepare for upcoming appointments.

Challenges Some challenges I faced when I first started out included the lack of support from some of my family members and friends as they had doubts about me staying long in this industry. They also felt that my degree had gone to waste as I ventured into a different field from what I studied. Due to the lack of support, my spirits dampened but I knew I had to persevere on. I eventually overcame these negative feelings and found myself stronger as I understood that handling rejections are part and parcel of life. Vital skills Extending a good listening ear to your prospects and clients is important so you can better analyse their situations and needs, upon which you can provide suitable recommendations accordingly. Perseverance is also an essential skill, because at times, prospects may reject you – but they might end up being your clients at some point in the future, provided you’ve been persevering well and conducting your follow-ups conscientiously. My advice to graduates Explore this industry with an open heart and a never-say-die attitude. Rejections are bound to happen, but the rewarding part about this career is that you get paid off well. Pursuing a career in insurance After completing my diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic, I decided to pursue a different course in university. In the midst of studying for my degree in 2017, I chanced upon an internship in AXA’s Investment and Wealth Management team. I did not know how the insurance industry worked, but it turned out to be an internship to remember. I had amazing mentors who guided me patiently at work despite my lack of experience and knowledge. They made it easy for me to approach them and empowered me to complete tasks by myself. This internship also confirmed my career interest and I was happy to be offered a fulltime position at the end of my internship.

The best bits I have automated a large part of the biannual ILP funds report to improve process efficiency. Currently, I am still enhancing the system and its capabilities. Separately, I am working on the enhancement of an investment mandate, as well as the development of new services for ILP customers. These two projects presented steep learning curves and offered invaluable experience for me in AXA.

Support AXA encourages empowerment, and I am empowered to make decisions and express my thoughts and ideas. I have never felt discriminated against nor made to feel less for my lack of experience. AXA promotes a culture of learning and self-development, and runs development courses for employees to hone their skills, which I have taken advantage of. I was also sent as a delegate to Taipei in 2018 to attend an Asian fund selector conference.

Continuous learning I personally believe that we should work in areas of a field we are passionate about. In AXA, there are many opportunities for selfdevelopment to improve myself. In addition, my role requires me to work with different stakeholders which exposes me to pick up technical and social skills. My time in AXA has taught me the value of interdependency – we collaborate harmoniously and work as one team to achieve a common goal. Teams are set up with the right mix of people and this truly helps to achieve project efficiency and efficacy.

My job In my role, I have gained exposure and insights to the asset and wealth management space. My work involves performing due diligence and analysis to work on mutual funds. I also support the delivery of the Annual Investment-Linked Products (ILP) Funds Report. To keep abreast of trends and gain insights to global economic risks and investment strategies, I research and attend meetings with Portfolio Managers and Investment Specialists. My job scope also entails working on initiatives to enhance the attractiveness of the platform of ILP Funds offered to AXA’s customers.

We are always critical of ourselves and this can sometimes stand in our way, digging up doubt where we had once planted in faith. When others are doing well or better, it does not mean that you can’t or aren’t. Focus on your own efforts to achieve your own goals. I am always thankful for all the opportunities AXA has given to me and will continue to strive to deliver my best in the role given to me. I can’t tell you how your future will unfold from here. But what I can tell you is that it is coming from where you are now, and as long as you behave responsibly, you’ve got a bright future ahead.

My advice Remember to cut yourself some slack if you’ve been putting in your best. When we make mistakes, we tend to be hard on ourselves. It is fine to make mistakes and take risks because it’s through these that you learn best. Beating yourself up incessantly for your mistakes won’t help you down the road. It is more important to spend time reflecting on the lessons drawn and to focus on becoming better.

Getting started I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration majoring in Operations & Supply Chain Management from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2017 and joined CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP). Some may feel that my major is not the best fit for the real estate industry, but I am very thankful that CapitaLand not only looked beyond paper qualifications, but also offered me a multitude of learning opportunities and exposure across different asset classes within the real estate industry. For instance, my first rotation was with Ascott REIT, Investor Relations, which granted me a macro view of how CapitaLand’s lodging business works. For my second rotation, I joined the retail team overseeing Funan’s redevelopment. I was given the opportunity to work with an experienced team of operations, leasing, marketing, and asset managers to plan for the opening of Funan, and it also gave me invaluable exposure across a variety of functions. About my job When I was part of the Integration Management Office assisting with the planning and integration efforts between CapitaLand and Ascendas-Singbridge, we only had a short span of time to execute the integration. You can imagine the amount of preparation and work that had to be done to fully integrate two large real estate groups, including the harmonisation of processes, best practices and establishing new working relationships to ensure that post-merger synergies could be achieved.

The challenges One of the biggest challenges I faced was time management as I was with the Investor Relations team in Ascott REIT and also part of the Ascott Strategic Projects team for my first rotation. As a fresh graduate, it was overwhelming at the start, especially when there were multiple tight deadlines. Thankfully, I had very understanding bosses who were always willing to offer guidance. Through their guidance, I gradually learnt how to better manage my time and be more flexible.

The ability to convey your ideas smoothly across to different stakeholders goes a long way in obtaining buy-in. Fortunately, some skills come with experience, and the more you challenge yourself, the better you become! My proudest moment I am proud to be part of the team that helped with the redevelopment of Funan. It was a huge milestone for everyone involved, and we got to see our ideas and efforts transform into reality. It was especially satisfying when we saw the community of tenants, shoppers, and guests come together in a single integrated development.

When I entered university as a blissfully ignorant undergraduate, I found myself muddling through and spending four years exploring various career options, and taking up diverse internship opportunities in the fields of assurance, investment banking and private equity investment. However, NUS also gave me the opportunity to volunteer as a pro-bono consultant for a year and take part in case competitions to hone my critical thinking skills. These experiences gave me a better understanding of myself and what motivates me, allowing me to contribute meaningfully. Getting started For my final summer break in 2017, I joined CAG’s Talent Internship Programme (TIP), where I had the opportunity to work on a business case analysis of a bioport. Something about the workplace struck a chord with me – Changi Airport Group (CAG) is a company energised by a fun-loving culture, leaders who value and invest in people, and employees who are fully devoted to making a difference to customers. I told myself that this is the place for me, and after graduation, joined the Business Development team. It has been a year into this journey and I still have a lot to learn. About my job My team acts as an internal consultant to CAG’s senior management. We evaluate investment deals bounded by a strategic lens, spearhead cross-department initiatives with our strategic partners and scour for various revenue streams. In a lean team, I function both as an analyst and a project owner, working directly with business units and senior management. Despite the steep learning curve, the diversity of projects and exposure to the management’s strategic considerations spur me to sharpen my skill sets and challenge myself.

I’m also involved in the engagement of strategic partners to spearhead initiatives, and to succeed, I need to be sharp and concise in developing the value proposition of the initiatives and how it would better serve customers. Looking back, I learnt the importance of confidence and fearlessness to push across a stand, as long as it resonates with the objective to serve our customers better. Not about the achievement There is no single biggest achievement I feel proud of and I’m as motivated about upcoming projects as I was with past projects. From transforming the future of ground transport to evaluating investment opportunities, I am passionate and proud to be serving our customers better and to be with this organisation that drives the management and future development of Changi Airport.

Getting started I majored in Engineering Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a specialisation in Computation Engineering. I also took a minor in computer science after gaining an interest in coding during the first year of my course. Hence, I decided to pursue a career in technology. I joined DBS in 2017 with little to no experience in software development and was placed in a scrum team that was building a multi-asset trade execution platform. At that point, everything was new to me and it was quite challenging to keep up with a whole team of very seasoned developers. Thankfully, the team was very encouraging, constantly trusting me to take up tasks and guiding me along the way. My role I am a software engineer in a scrum team that develops trade execution platforms. At the start of each sprint, the team discusses the features that we want to deliver by the end of the sprint and allocate tasks to each member. The work involves building a resilient application that has very low latency and serves the various financial products that DBS offers to its customers – creating a high degree of overlap between tech and finance. I have always been interested in both these fields and it’s a great place to learn. I believe tech will guide us towards more efficient markets and better serve customers. Challenges When I first joined the team, I was clueless about the technology the bank used and everything was challenging to me. Being new to the technology and logic behind the financial products, whenever I sat with my team during discussions, I felt that while they spoke a familiar language, I didn’t understand anything because it was peppered with technical terms. I often found myself bugging my teammates after each discussion to get a better understanding and it really helped with my learning.

In my attempt to get up to speed as quickly as possible, I did not really go indepth on things I picked up, so I once deleted a chunk of codes that I thought was not used, only to find out later that it rendered a feature of the application useless. It was an embarrassing episode for a team that was used to being at the top of their game, and looking back now, I would have drilled deeper and sharpened my skills to get a better understanding of how things worked behind the codes.

“Today, the model I designed and built from scratch is used to power some of the chatbots in the bank.” My proudest moment As part of the tech graduate programme in DBS, I was rotated among various departments. During one of my rotations, I was working with the chatbot team and was given an opportunity to study how natural language processing worked. After a good amount of studying, my team decided to let me take a shot at developing a chatbot. It is interesting just thinking about how a computer can understand the human language, so I spent a couple of months learning how it worked and built a prototype. Today, the model I designed and built from scratch is used to power some of the chatbots in the bank.

What you need to have is the passion for continuous learning and problem solving. This is more important as you can always pick up hard skills on the job.

Skills essential to me A few months into my tenure in DBS, a senior colleague told me that the most important skill you can have is to be able to unlearn and learn as quickly as possible. A KEEN INTEREST IN CYBERSECURITY AND PROGRAMMING HELPED WEISHENG CREATE A MEANINGFUL TECH CAREER.

Getting started Computer games and programming have always fascinated me from a young age. When I was in primary school, my older brother was already into Information Technology (IT) and this helped me grow my interest in the field. While in Temasek Polytechnic, I picked up HTML and CSS to personalise my blog, and I would add in Easter eggs – non-functional features – using JavaScript for my friends to discover. Later, I pursued my passion in programming by studying computer science at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In my final year, an internship with the Cybersecurity Programme Centre (PC) at the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) caught my attention as the project was on Android app development, something I was very excited about working on. Together with a fellow intern, we developed a secure Bluetooth file transfer Android app using cryptography techniques. It was my first time being exposed to hands-on applications of cybersecurity, and after graduation, I knew I wanted to be a cybersecurity engineer at DSTA. My job I am currently in the Smart Technology Security team. My work involves designing and developing custom solutions that enhance the overall security of mobile devices used in MINDEF/SAF, for example, to monitor mobile devices to ensure they are not compromised. Some of the interesting parts of my job include the opportunities to explore and work with new technology. For instance, I am currently exploring how we can use artificial intelligence to enhance anomaly detection features in our solutions. Challenges As a fresh graduate, I found it quite challenging to keep up with the latest developments in the fast-evolving field of cybersecurity. However, this period was also the most rewarding as I learnt a lot about this exciting discipline.

I also had a very good mentor who took time to discuss my projects with me, and had weekly check-ins to ensure I was on the right track. My teammates were also very enthusiastic about their work and would share tech updates and news regularly with one another. New cybersecurity engineers also have to go for a three-day cybersecurity foundation course, to test their basic understanding! During my free time, I would read up on topics such as cryptography and information assurance. I also made use of resources such as news aggregator sites to curate cybersecurity articles to gain better understanding of evolving cyber threats and new methodologies to counter them. Watching tutorials or lecture videos on YouTube also injected some fun into my learning process.

We had to code from scratch, and build an innovative solution that met operational requirements and catered to future system and device upgrades. Doing this as a team and seeing the solution deployed was one of the most satisfying experiences for me. I hope to continue using my expertise to make valuable contributions to our nation’s defence.

After the internship, I was amongst the lucky few to be offered a position in this prestigious firm and decided to join for a holistic career experience. My job My everyday life revolves around meeting people and educating them about the importance of risk management through financial planning. As insurance is part of financial planning and is a rather complex product, it brings me great satisfaction when I am able to demystify my client’s queries regardless of complexity. With concise fact-finding and sound advice, I am able to positively impact my client’s financial security by filling the gaps in their portfolio and addressing their needs by striving to provide all my clients with a holistic and tailored financial portfolio. The interesting part about this career is that we get to meet people from different walks of life and hear their life stories. Also, I’m always learning from my clients and through that, am better able to provide value-adding advice to others. There are some challenges, though, such as the objections and rejections that I have to handle.

Challenges As a rather introverted person, I had a rocky start to my career as the fear of rejection was something I had to face. In fact, it wasn’t until I personally witnessed a hospital claim from one of my close friends that I was assured of the importance of my job. My biggest achievement When I first joined this industry, I set personal goals and targets for myself. Although I struggled a lot in the first year, I managed to achieve my personal goals by qualifying for two incentive trips to London and the Maldives. Getting started My passion for flying began when I first got a taste of it as part of the Singapore Youth Flying Club. Later, the chance to fly a fighter aircraft and pursue a meaningful career with an organisation that aligned with my personal values attracted me to the Air Force. Enjoying my job I love flying, and while it is challenging to become a competent fighter pilot, I am grateful for the trust that the Air Force has placed in me and I look forward to defending Singapore every day. Challenges and opportunities I was the Trainee Wing Commander during my cadet days and Course-in-Charge for my Basic Wing Course (BWC). My stint as the Trainee Wing Commander focused mainly on managing the morale and welfare of my peers. On the other hand, my time as Course-inCharge for my BWC gave me the opportunity to manage and delegate our course workload, which ensured that everyone performed to the best of their abilities.

I also had the opportunity to be part of overseas exercises, such as Exercise Cope Tiger, which opened my eyes to the hightempo operations that we conduct. This helped me to develop the initiative and selfmotivation required to become a successful leader in the organisation.

Collectively, these experiences have enhanced my understanding of military affairs, honed my flying competency, and deepened my appreciation of my role in the Air Force. Getting started I have always enjoyed mentoring and working with young people. My prior experience as a youth volunteer in the South East Community Development Council helped me discover my passion for volunteerism, and fuelled my desire to make a difference to the lives of children. I am thus grateful to be given the opportunity to develop my school’s Valuesin-Action (VIA) programme as a second-year teacher at East View Secondary School. My active involvement in values education reinforced my beliefs that a teacher’s calling goes beyond imparting knowledge, but more pertinently, centres on moulding her students’ character. About my job Being a teacher is exciting and multi-faceted. A typical day for me starts at 7 am, entailing a wide array of tasks that includes lesson planning, classroom teaching, marking, co-curricular activities (CCA) sessions and many more! As someone who believes in holistic education, I also look forward to opportunities beyond the classroom, such as camps and learning journeys, to broaden my students’ learning experiences. Over the years, the role of a teacher has evolved to a more all-encompassing one. To grow my competencies, I actively source for, and attend, professional development sessions that deepen my knowledge and broaden my repertoire of skills to better engage my students. Challenges I faced I recall my initial struggles as a budding English Language teacher. My first English class was made up of highly energetic students who enjoyed playing sports. During lessons, however, they were also constantly looking out for interactive activities and learning tasks. This amplified the need for me to design my lessons carefully, infusing hands-on learning tasks and games in the lessons, in order to keep them engaged and

on-task in their learning. But it wasn’t easy, and I remember countless sleepless nights reflecting on my lessons and how to be a more skilful teacher. However, I am immensely grateful to my colleagues, mentors and school leaders who have played an instrumental role in my growth as an educator. They not only provided advice and shared resources with me, but more importantly, believed in me and gave me many opportunities to learn and improve.

Impacting the Digital Transformation landscape Eugene Tay

Getting started I was pursuing a Bachelor of Sports Science and Management at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) when I had the opportunity to explore how innovations affected and influenced individuals and companies through my final year project. I took up an internship with a multinational logistics company under the customer solutions and innovation team, where I grew my knowledge and thirst for digital innovations that could solve real-life business problems. It was then that I affirmed my decision to enter the financial services industry, to be a part of the most exciting digital disruption wave known as “fintech.” Upon graduation, I sought a similar role, and knew that the OCBC Graduate Talent Programme (GTP) was known for its recognition of the value talents from diverse disciplines could bring. Furthermore, the programme ensured rigor in building a strong foundation in banking, an area I was keen to develop. The bank also recognised my interests, as I was able to indicate my preference for a role in digital transformation during the interview process. I was subsequently offered a chance to join the digital strategy team within our Consumer Secured Lending business.

I was first attached to one of the branches and it was a memorable experience as I never imagined taking up a front-office role in my career. these insights aided me when developing digital innovations for our customers. My job In my line of work, we generate ideas and transform them from conception to reality. The team has rolled out customer-facing digital platforms such as Emma, a home and renovation loan chatbot powered by artificial intelligence, and OneAdvisor Home, a onestop home ownership portal. I enjoy the constant brainstorming of new strategies and tech solutions that can make an impact on the business. The challenge lies in adapting and pivoting throughout the delivery lifecycle to promptly respond to technology changes and competition. This requires close collaboration and communication between internal stakeholders and external partners of the bank. Challenges At the start of my journey with the bank, I was hesitant to present my views and opinions due to my lack of experience in the industry. Looking back, I should have been bolder in voicing my thoughts even if it meant that I probably would have made a mistake. It would have been a richer learning experience, and my team might have been able to draw inspiration or benefit from opinions that offer different perspectives. After all, ideas are often generated when they are least expected. My proudest moments I’m particularly proud of a project that started after my conversation with a few sales team leaders. They were having issues generating individual sales reports for their team, and precious time was lost due to the manual processes. In response to that, I created an automated digital solution which enabled the team to shorten reporting time from two hours a day to less than five minutes with just the click of a button. Apart from time savings, the team is now empowered with more data points and insights to better manage the performance and development of the team.

Manager, Digital Strategy, Consumer Secured Lending with OCBC Bank 2018: Part of the team which created OneAdvisor Home, a one-stop portal that integrates property search, affordability assessment and related advisory services to guide customers on their home ownership journey. It also gives me great satisfaction to know that the solutions I’ve devised are playing a part in delivering value to our stakeholders and customers. Skills I need Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential as it is crucial to match the right solution to the business problem. To do so, however, one must be cognisant of the converging landscapes of technology and business. Continuous learning is key to keeping abreast of industry updates, as with learning from success stories and thought leaders. For me, I find conferences, including web-conferences, particularly useful in staying updated. Stakeholder management skills are also equally important as it takes a deep level of collaboration between different functions to deliver successful digital initiatives. It was through working and learning from experienced colleagues that my skills were elevated to a higher level. Advice for graduates When it comes to working in digital transformation, you must be inquisitive and dare to dream. The process from ideation to implementation of digital solutions in the financial services industry can be challenging and complex, but it is truly exciting and fulfilling!

Getting started After graduating from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2017, I joined SMRT’s Engineering and Management Associate (EMA) Programme as it offered me an opportunity to serve millions of passengers daily, and I believed the programme structure would advance my career development and personal growth. I started out as a field engineer in the train-borne signalling team, which was exciting because it gave me the chance to learn what goes on behind the scenes of our public transport system. About my job My job is to oversee and ensure preventive maintenance activities are planned and completed on time, and to make sure that the maintenance teams are always operationally ready for service recovery. As a signalling engineer, it is both interesting and challenging to constantly learn new things about our new Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) System, especially the complex interfaces with other sub-systems, and interactions with the older Westinghouse Signalling System. Challenges I faced Knowing next to nothing about one of the world’s newest signalling systems when I started out meant that the learning curve was extremely steep. The NSEWL being the first railway system to adopt a dual signalling system also meant that there were many teething problems to sieve through. However,

I approached all those problems with a curious mind, and the multitude of questions and problems I had were eventually solved with the help of the experienced maintenance teams and engineers. As a fresh graduate working with senior teams who have been working with SMRT for more than 20 years, it is essential to always remain humble, keep an open mind, and work together with them, be it day or night. This builds rapport, trust and a mutual respect for one another. Reaching out to the staff on a personal level also helps me understand the difficulties each person faces at work, and that way we can work together to find solutions which create a more effective and better workplace for all.

Always be humble, inquisitive, and open to learning.” A sense of appreciation In the two years I have been working with SMRT, there is nothing more rewarding than to feel appreciated by the community. During the Learning Journey community visits, young students and other members of the public got to visit the depot workshop. As they learn more about the back-breaking work our teams and engineers put into maintaining the network’s systems, their words of thanks definitely inspired me to work harder and more effectively.

Important skills It is all about the attitude. Always be humble, inquisitive and open to learning. SMRT is a very dynamic and fast-paced workplace. There are always new and complex problems to solve, and unconventional solutions can sometimes be very effective. Interpersonal skills are also very important, as you will be working with both colleagues and external parties such as regulators, contractors, and also members of the public at times. Good communication is key to understanding the needs of all these stakeholders. Advice for graduates Be receptive to feedback so that you can continuously improve yourself. An inquisitive mind is necessary as the railway industry will always offer new knowledge.
