he STEM sector is made up of scientists who study the world around us, technologists who deal with computer systems and software, engineers that thrive on practical applications, and mathematicians who work with numbers. In this guide, we focus on graduate areas of work in STEM to help you find your ideal career and employer.

Graduates in the sciences have their pick of employers across many industries, such as academia, chemical research, and even meteorology. An upward trend in environmental science has also resulted in demand for graduates in that area, and the healthy science sector in Singapore has generated a need for science writers among universities and clinical laboratories.

In IT and technology, employment can be found in a variety of firms ranging from IT giants and tech startups, to software and hardware makers as well as datadriven companies. Products and services are both consumer-facing and tailored for business solutions, such as telecommunications and cloud platform services. Furthermore, multi-national companies and public agencies alike require IT and technology talent to keep up with cyber security issues and the ever-changing landscape.

Challenges: Graduates might find it challenging to keep up with current trends and methodologies in this highly dynamic sector. As new discoveries and innovations are made every year, those in this industry must learn to adapt to new modes of working, and constantly acquire new skills to stay on top of their game.

Perks: Breaking new ground is common in the science industry, and many enter for the rigorous mental stimulation involved. Some roles, such as food safety and meteorology, even allow professionals to play a crucial role in public safety, while chemical research encourages scientists to flex their ingenuity and creativity. In addition, there is the opportunity to marry a zeal for technology with other interests, be it healthcare or entertainment. Employers include industrial manufacturers in key areas such as the energy, infrastructure and medical sectors — and technology firms, marine engineering firms, oil and gas companies, as well as research institutes, hire engineering talents too. Engineers are also sought by construction companies, environmental NGOs, and public agencies in charge of building infrastructure much like airports and waterworks too.

Although many employers are in sectors that deal with risk, statistics and numerical data, others are in more specialised fields, such as medicine or law. Other sectors not normally associated with a degree in mathematics are available as well, such as the gaming and cyber security industries. Alternatively, there is the popular academic option, where graduates can explore and share theoretical mathematical knowledge.

Challenges: Change is the only constant in this ever-changing field, so engineers need to have a love for continuous learning and an ability to listen to feedback to thrive. The engineering industry also bears heavy responsibility to real world applications as they are developed and implemented in this sector. Job transitions are commonplace as well, as the best way an engineer can learn is to plan strategic moves, though this also means that they have to be highly adaptable to new work environments, and quickly pick up new skills and technologies. Moreover, engineering as a profession involves large-scale, complex problems that are an entirely different ball game compared to engineering in university.

Perks: A career in this field is often said to be satisfying, given the intellectual stimulation offered by interesting and unpredictable challenges. Beyond the prestige that comes along with the profession, engineers also get to make the world a better place even as they enjoy financial security for their hard work.

Challenges: Entry-level professionals may only be assigned to more mundane tasks such as working with modelling software and spreadsheets as they continue to learn the ropes of the industry. However, more senior positions may come with highly stressful environments that involve large sums of money as businesses rely on mathematicians to analyse data and maintain profit margins.

Perks: A mathematics-inclined person may enjoy a career deeply involved in analyses and assessments as it makes full use of their skills to solve real-world problems. Although the market may be small and competitive, actuary and risk professionals are often privy to attractive remuneration packages. As numbers are a universal language, certifications and advanced numeracy skills possessed can lead not only to posts abroad, but also easy transitions to accountancy firms, trading, or other non-actuarial roles in banks.

A Career in Science Careers in science include that of a physicist, pharmacist, materials scientist, pharmacologist, and roles in medical research. Fields such as marine biology and environmental science and conservation come under the umbrella of scientific careers too. However, on top of being well-versed in your area of specialisation, you have to be ambitious, logical and passionate about your chosen field in order to pursue a scientific career.

A Career in Technology As technology helps to improve lives by bringing convenience through efficient energy use, building design and transportation, among others, career paths include computer programming, systems and database administration, as well as information security. Information technology, on the other hand, delivers value to users from data. Talents technically skilled with programmes and software keen to solve problems, as well as communicate and work effectively in a team, are also welcome.

A Career in Engineering While scientists create theories and focus on concepts, engineers implement science to solve practical problems, look out for breakthroughs, and invent new ways to do and make things. Fields of engineering include aerospace, biomedical, civil, electrical, and even environmental and petroleum, among many others. Other than being educated in their chosen field, successful engineers are strong in mathematics and science, highly analytical, and enjoy working in teams.

GETTING A STEM GRADUATE JOB Organisations in Singapore’s STEM sectors are always on the lookout for talent to boost the innovative economy.

T

he world needs scientists, technology professionals, engineers, as well as mathematicians, and Singapore is no different. Competition is stiff, with well-known graduate employers attracting plenty of applications, and SMEs also gaining traction. And even though you may be keen to use your degree or diploma to kick-start your professional journey, you should have a basic idea of what to expect first. Here are just some of the most typical questions job seekers ask.

What are the different areas of work? STEM graduates are welcome in many areas, ranging from the aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, electronic and rail fields to academia, research and development, and even the telecommunications sector. However, depending on the industry, roles can vary in scale from the development of nanotechnologies, food additives and electronic devices, to the construction of refineries or solar parks.

How can I get a job with an STEM company? Employers greatly value graduates who can contribute a good mix of technical knowledge and commercial awareness. Larger recruiters generally bring newcomers on board through graduate training programmes, which can be competitive. Having previous work experience – whether gained through internships, industrial placements, or part-time jobs with related employers – can give an edge over other applicants. Smaller firms, on the other hand, tend to hire directly into specific entry-level roles.

What qualifications and skills do I need? While graduates from all disciplines are welcome to apply for more commercial positions, specific roles may require a more relevant degree. Employers may be selective of the education level of their applicants as well. For instance, while some may be open to recruiting graduates with BEng or MEng degrees, others may only be on the lookout for graduates with a MEng.

Graduates may also want to consider pursuing further studies and certifications. Keep in mind that recruiters are usually on the look out for a variety of soft skills too, including: • Communication skills – written and verbal • Problem solving ability • Analytical skills • The ability to work in a team • Interpersonal skills • Commercial awareness • Attention to details • The ability to learn quickly • Flexibility and adaptability • Enthusiasm and motivation

What does the application process involve? Major firms typically prefer online applications from their careers page or job portals, whereas smaller firms accept resumes and cover letters via email. Applicants who have successfully passed the first round will usually be invited back for a series of interviews, oftentimes general and technical; tests, usually numerical, personality, verbal reasoning, among others; and/or an assessment centre.

When should I apply? Although many employers have open recruitment cycles where they accept applications until all vacancies have been filled, a number of them do keep annual deadlines, especially if they coordinate regional, or international, graduate programmes. Smaller firms, on the other hand, lean towards hiring graduates directly into specific positions as and when they are needed, so be sure to monitor online portals, job boards, and companies as much as possible.

What training and development opportunities do employers offer? Training and development is a high priority in the STEM industries, and employers typically offer professional courses or graduate schemes. Moreover, the government also refreshed the Continuing Education and Training (CET) programme in 2014.

What are the working life and hours like? Job scopes and working hours depend on the field. Some are deskbound, clearing tasks such as calculations and preparing proposals all day, while others either oversee work in a manufacturing facility or construction site, or meet with clients. Depending on the role, graduates may also have a relatively good work-life balance, although extra hours are usually put in whenever deadlines approach. Mobility is another important aspect of working life, and graduates may have to travel for client meetings, business trips, or extended placements abroad.

What are the highs and lows?

+ One of the highlights of the industry are the many different careers a graduate can choose from, and many positions often come with the chance to explore cutting-edge technology as well. Many roles offer intellectually and technically-challenging problems too.

However, on the flip side, depending on the role, graduates may be required to travel often, which can be both exciting and taxing at the same time. The sector is also beset with strict regulations and standard operating procedures, often leading to tedious paperwork. More than that, work can also get frustrating as projects may be abandoned halfway through due to a sudden withdrawal of funds or other reasons.

What other jobs can STEM graduates do? As many graduates in STEM disciplines are often exposed to a range of transferrable skills, such as problem solving, logical thinking, and high-level numeracy skills, they are very desirable candidates not just in the sector, but the finance, gaming, and consultancy industries as well.

Graduates can opt for commercial roles in technical sales, operations management, investment management, and logistics fields.

Another option for graduates is to start out in a technical position to gain more experience before moving on to senior management or various business functions in the future.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT STEM CAREER AND GRADUATE EMPLOYER There are many good employers in Singapore, so how do you choose between them? Take some time to think about the sector you want to work in, the career you want to have, and the life you want to lead.

etting employed is one thing. Getting satisfactory employment, however, is a whole different ball

game. Most firms present a good mix of specialist and management career opportunities – each of which offers a very different type of career springboard. While this may not necessarily determine your future career pathway, it certainly does influence your professional growth as a graduate. For this reason, it is important that you put some thought into applying to the right employer and position:

• What are your priorities? Do you want to develop your technical knowledge to become an expert in that particular field, or would you prefer to throw yourself into the thick of the action in, for example, a manufacturing plant? • What type of function suits you best? Find out what you are most comfortable with. Perhaps a customer and productoriented role in supply chain management aligns with your personality? Or is a strategy planning-related position in project management a better fit for your temperament?

These are only broad guidelines for you to ponder over, however. If you are still unsure, you may want to try applying to a rotational training programme some companies have. These are mostly offered by larger organisations, and they allow you the opportunity to “sample” duties across different departments, including commercial and technical ones. Depending on the employer, though, the structure of these courses may or may not be role-specific. Some firms will want their graduate hires to experience the best of both worlds, offering programmes that cross technical and non-technical fields. Others are more particular, sorting applicants out into “streams” upon admission. On the other hand, smaller businesses prefer recruiting directly into specific roles, so make sure you know what you are aiming for if you want to apply to such firms.

Choosing your working environment Start by considering whether you are more suited for a fast-paced or research-based working environment. Factories and manufacturing plants tend to be more exciting, requiring a lot of immediate attention and action. Inversely, the research and development (R&D) and design departments may provide more chances for you to work with technology, but are less speedy. If you prefer to spend most of your working hours outdoors, look at positions that will require you to travel and perform your duties out of the office, such as the

construction or oil extraction areas of work. If you are the type who gets bored by a desk-bound vocation, then you may want to opt for an area of specialisation that can sate your wanderlust. If you are the opposite of both, consider other fields, such as design engineering or statistics, which are mainly office-based. The working environment may also affect the type of opportunities and projects offered. Larger corporations with structured training schemes will usually let you participate in big international projects, supported by a good network. Smaller organisations, in contrast, are more selective with their projects, usually going for specialised niches. On top of that, lesser manpower at such firms means that you will be given more early responsibilities, which, in turn, translates to faster growth and more experience. While this may mean that the learning curve has the potential to be quite steep, you may achieve early acknowledgement if you can pick things up fast enough!

What are you prepared to do? Before you decide on who you want to work for, think about how far you are willing to go for your work – both literally and metaphorically. Consider these:

• Are you prepared to move around the region for work, or travel overseas on secondments and long-term project assignments? How long will you be willing to do so? • Or are you more comfortable being rooted in the office, where you can build positive working relationships with your team members?

Oil and gas professionals, for instance, are usually required to be particularly mobile, and they can often be found travelling offshore to oil rigs and refineries. Process controllers, on the other hand, may find themselves tied to a specific manufacturing plant, monitoring its operational efficiency day in and day out. Think about the hours that you are willing to clock in as well; it is not uncommon for meteorologists to have to do shift work, while those involved in maintenance sometimes pull unusual hours. If keeping ordinary working hours from 9-to-6 is a priority, then perhaps other specialisations, much like in fintech, will be more suited.

Obtaining additional professional qualifications Another concern you may want to consider is the educational support you may get from your employer. Are you aiming to become professionally qualified as a chartered engineer? What about further studies? Most recruiters do provide such support and opportunities. Be sure to clarify, however, as some employers are only willing to support your education to a certain level. In addition, be sure to ask about alternative training opportunities – both internal and external – and other forms of sponsorship that can benefit you or help you with your career progression.

Make the match Do not neglect the culture fit between yourself and your prospective employer! See if you can request a tour around the workplace during the interview process to get a feel for the company culture or the kind of work that inspired you to apply to this employer in the first place. If you have the chance, try to speak with current employees or any connections that you may have within the company to get some insights. You can also use this time to observe your potential colleagues. More often than not, if you are comfortable talking to them from the get-go, you will be able to work well with them if you do get hired.

PERFECT YOUR STEM RESUME Write the ideal resume to hook recruiters at first glance.

A

resume should be no more than two sheets of A4-sized paper, but what information should you include? How can you fit all the information about yourself into a single document? The overall aim of a resume is to market yourself and your skills to recruiters in order to convince them that you are a good fit for the role and company you are applying to. In other words, a well-written resume is key to landing an interview with prospective employers. Make a positive first impression by crafting an effective resume with our tips and sample.

The golden rules 1. Tailor your resume to each employer. Keep a master copy on hand, but tweak it for each application. 2. Ensure your resume is easy to read – choose a clear font in a reasonable size (such as Calibri, size 11), word your headings clearly, and consider using bullet points to break up the text. 3. Use a skills-focused or chronological format for your resume, depending on what sells you best. 4. Resumes commonly follow the reverse-chronological format, which focuses primarily on work history and education. If you follow this approach, make sure the chronology is clear and there are no major time gaps to confuse or worry employers.

Resumes often follow the chronological format, particularly if the job seeker has held a couple of positions in the past. This format is best for highlighting work experience and lessons learned.

A skills-focused resume, on the other hand, is useful if you are applying for a highly-specialised role that requires a specific skill set. It is also a good format to follow if you have very little prior experience.

Do graduate resumes need personal statements? Many students start with a brief personal statement that outlines their abilities and aspirations. It is also advisable for graduates to include a short profile in their resumes that quickly summarise their motivations for applying to the position and why they would be a good fit for the company. Be specific and keep it relevant to the position in question. For instance, it is a waste of space to put down: “Student with great teamwork skills seeks challenging job.” Instead, it is far better to state: “Final-year mechanical engineering student with particular interest in mathematics seeking graduate role in the defence industry.”

Educational history – how much details do companies want? Your educational history from your university years should include your predicted or actual degree class, information on group projects and your dissertation, any modules relevant to the job, and related academic awards. Keep in mind that employers do not need to know the specifics of modules that do not pertain to them.

What experience should I include in my resume? Many employers look very favourably on achievements and experiences outside STEM. These can be a real boost if you have not been able to secure any STEMrelated work experience – and can give you an extra edge. Examples worth mentioning include fundraising, voluntary work, or taking a leading role in a university society. You can also mention part-time work or summer jobs, but do not go into detail. Instead, summarise your achievements and any transferrable skills developed that will be useful in your career.

Give contact details at which recruiters can easily get hold of you. Ensure your email address sounds professional. Include university modules that are relevant to the job instead of listing them all. Devote plenty of space to relevant work experience, highlighting what you achieved and how it benefitted the company. Where relevant, summarise what you learned from an experience. Include part-time jobs, emphasising transferrable skills obtained, but devote less space to these and more to relevant experience.

Many employers will be interested in your IT skills, but do not exaggerate your abilities.

WORK EXPERIENCE 2019 (July to September) Future Electronics Singapore, Intern • Actively sourced for potential Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) suppliers of key components in the Southeast Asian region. • Identified more cost-effective alternatives to key components used in company products. Theoretically reduced production costs by 5% as a result. • Communicated directly with senior management during the sourcing process, and submitted reports of findings to them. 2018 (June to August) Research Assistant, Fibre Optics Lab, Singapore University • Assisted in research on power fibre laser systems and their practical industrial applications. • Set up, maintained and catalogued equipment used in research experiments. • Coded programme to filter and analyse gathered data, in order to assist with interpretation of research findings. VOLUNTARY WORK 2017 (June to September) Volunteer Vocational Trainer, Craft a Change Organisation • Volunteered as a trainer for a robotics vocational programme for underprivileged teenagers. • Taught a class of 26 teenagers. Successfully designed and taught programmes such as building and programming a pet bird robot and a race car. • The experience taught me the value of patience and good communication. It also gave me a lot of satisfaction knowing I imparted knowledge to underprivileged individuals who may use these skills to potentially better their future. FURTHER EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE 2015-2017 Customer Service Assistant, Tesco (part-time) • Duties included working on the checkout counter and at the customer service desk. • Helped develop my commercial awareness and interpersonal skills. COVER LETTER TIPS FOR THE GRADUATE STEM SPECIALIST Convince employers that you are the right person for the job with an attractive cover letter.

M

ost STEM graduates have a fairly wide range of career options open to them, and are highly sought after for their numerical skills and problem solving abilities outside the STEM sectors. Within it, however, there are a wide range of fields they can choose from. Your cover letter, therefore, is a chance to convince your prospective employer that you want to work in the industry, for their specific organisation, and in the job role advertised. Here are some tips on how you can successfully sell yourself to recruiters with a cover letter.

Research matters! The trick is to have a clear idea as to what the company does and what the job entails. From there, draw out evidence of your own skills, interests and experience that relate to this. Keep in mind that flattery such as “I am applying to you because you are a vibrant, international company that is a market leader in the automotive industry” will not get you anywhere. A far better approach, however, is to: • Clearly state your career aim • S pecify what attracts you to the employer. For instance, you could mention a couple of projects the company has been involved in that piqued your interest • Mention a work placement, project, or module you enjoyed that relates to the position you are gunning for.

Showing an understanding of the organisation in your cover letter will illustrate that you have done your research, so pick out key bits that fit in with your application and relate them to yourself.

Accuracy and professionalism – vital for graduates Careers in the STEM industries demand not just professionalism, but accuracy too, whether for communicating effectively with clients, suppliers and non-technical colleagues, or even ensuring calculations are correct. Make sure your use of written English in your cover letter reassures recruiters that you have these qualities. If written communication is not your strong suit, refresh your knowledge of punctuation and grammar before you begin, and run draft copies of your cover letter through trusted friends or career advisers.

What an ideal cover letter should include Address the recipient by his or her title and surname. If these are not stated in the job ad, get in touch and ask. Never use “Sir or Madam” or “To whom it may concern”. Dear Ms Jones, I am writing to apply for the Graduate Water Treatment Engineer vacancy (ref A123) advertised on gradsingapore.com. I graduated earlier this year with a BEng in Chemical Engineering from Singapore University. I am seeking my first role in the water industry, and enclosed is my resume for your consideration. I am interested in the Graduate Water Treatment Engineer role at XYZ Water Consulting as I wish to apply my knowledge of the waste management industry, as well as my understanding of chemical processes and biotechnology developed during my undergraduate degree. I wish to join a consultancy as I particularly enjoy working on projects that provide a clear business benefit and am keen to work with clients and stakeholders. To that end, during a three-month placement with BioChem, I produced a report outlining how the organisation could reduce the waste from its processes by 30%. In addition, on a sixmonth industrial placement with Western Electric, I produced a report on how by-products could be harnessed to create more energy, which is now being implemented. I have also completed an optional ‘Waste Management in Business’ course in Singapore University, learning about business skills and functions, and have strong customer service skills developed through working as a Customer Service Assistant.

State clearly which position you are applying for. If the job ad specifies a reference number, include it. Very briefly mention your qualifications for this position.

Mention why you are applying to this specific position. Focus briefly on why you would be the right choice for the role, and that you have taken time to understand the company. Link the job requirements to your skills.

A cover letter is a chance to add clarity and detail to certain points on your resume. If you have achieved something specific in your work placements, highlight your relevant achievements here.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEWS FOR GRADUATE STEM POSITIONS With the right preparation, you can feel confident enough to talk technical in job interviews and land your coveted role.

E

mployers want to assess your technical abilities, so they draw out your experience and knowledge to see how well you match the role and how easily you can get your head around unfamiliar scenarios. On top of that, graduates applying for STEM-related positions should expect some competency-based questions to ensure their experience and background is as stated on their resume. The most likely technical assessment is a technical interview, but you may also face: • A short test • A presentation • Some technical questions within a more general interview • A technical exercise, such as a case study group exercise at an assessment centre.

What forms do technical interviews take? It depends on the employer, but recruiters typically test your technical competence and basic understanding of principles. They will also gauge how well you can explain technical concepts that you are familiar with – in front of an audience who are not. Technical interviews usually begin in familiar territory, beginning with modules and projects in your curriculum that you found interesting or relate directly to the organisation’s work before moving on. Preparation is essential, and here is a general guide to help you: • Brush up on your basic knowledge, particularly on subjects that tie in with the recruiter’s line of business, as you may be tested on this • Get insights into the employer’s activities and take note of any issues that may be of concern to the industry • Find out what sort of work the organisation does. From there, you will be able to anticipate the kind of questions related to the firm’s work you may be asked. For instance, an employer that constructs oil and gas facilities may ask you about steel structures, so you may have to refresh your general knowledge about steel.

It is not about getting the right answers! In many ways, technical interviews focus on how you communicate technical ideas and information rather than whether you know everything or not. It is perfectly alright to ask for further clarification if you need it. If you need a sketch or diagram to help you explain something, do not be afraid to ask for a piece of paper as well. Realworld projects rarely present textbook problems, so your future employer will want to see how you approach and address issues

Can you recover if you get stumped? Do not let your moment phase you. Pause, perhaps ask the interviewers some questions of your own, and try to work things out. If you do not know the answer, honesty is the best policy. Recruiters do not always expect candidates to know the answers to all the questions, especially when they are not meant to test technical knowledge, but rather the ability to think on your feet. Do not try to guess or make things up. Rather, it is better to own up if you are unsure about something.

Can you ask your own questions during a technical interview? When approached the right way, a technical interview can be a valuable experience, allowing you to learn more about the employer, as well as the other way around. Most interviewers are happy for candidates to ask questions about how the company works and have a twoway conversation. If you are lucky enough to receive more than one job offer, this may even help you decide on which one to accept. Being proactive and asking questions will also make a good impression on recruiters – it shows that you are thinking seriously about whether you are suited for the role.

ASSESSMENT CENTRES FOR GRADUATE STEM JOBS Elements such as group activities, presentations and tests are a mainstay of assessment centres. Here is what to expect.

M

ost major recruiters use assessment centres as part of the selection process for their graduate schemes. The content varies from company to company, but there are numerous common elements. Many assessment centres are designed around a corporation’s core competencies, so they usually focus on the skills most needed from graduate hires. Technical ability is obviously important, but it is soft skills that really make the difference. There is no point designing a brilliant new product or system if you cannot communicate the concept to colleagues, convince them of its potential value, or adapt your ideas in the light of practical or commercial considerations.

Typical activities at assessment centres Common tasks at assessment centres generally include the following: • Interviews: There may be technical interviews, competency-based interviews, or both. • Group activities: These often involve discussing and making decisions around a given business issue in small groups. • Giving a small presentation: Some recruiters give applicants the topic for the assessment centre presentation in advance so they have a chance to prepare, much like discussing a technical project they may have previously been involved with, for instance.

Others give candidates their topic on the day itself. This often relates to the employer’s business and may involve candidates doing fact-finding or decisionmaking before presenting their conclusions. • Tests: These can include psychometric tests in reasoning or numeracy. Other tests include personality questionnaires and quizzes to check if the candidate understands the basic principles of the area in which the firm works. Some employers also test whether applicants can extract relevant details from a large amount of information, and/or communicate it effectively. In some cases, the candidates may have to give a presentation.

The social side of assessment centres As well as formal exercises, most assessment centres include opportunities to chat to recruiters or current employees. Use the chance to learn more about the business, keeping in mind that their opinion of you is important. Genuine enthusiasm, interest in the company and good manners will take you far.

Dealing with assessment centre nerves Remember that recruiters will be marking you against their selection criteria, and not other candidates. Keep the employer’s criterion in mind throughout the event instead of pitting yourself against other applicants. It is not a competition! No matter how nervous you may be, try to remember that to succeed at an assessment centre, you need to participate fully. You may have great technical skills, but if the assessors do not see or hear anything from you, they

cannot assess you. If you have something to say that could have an important effect on the outcome of the group exercise, it is important to get your point across – but make sure to do so without being overbearing or rude. One key advantage of assessment centres is that you have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in a variety of situations. Rather than being judged on your performance in one interview by a single interviewer, you will be observed in various situations by multiple recruiters and professionals, providing a much more accurate picture. It is also a chance for you to find out about the organisation – so just relax and be yourself!

hile different employers prioritise different competencies depending on their organisation’s vision, values and culture, there are several common soft skills, or transferrable skills, that they look for in graduate candidates. Here are eight typical soft skills that are highly valued by employers, and how recruiters assess applicants to find out if they possess these skills.

Communication skills

Leadership 02 potential What is it? Assessors for many graduate schemes will be interested in whether you have an aptitude for leadership. It is important to be able to identify vital facts and communicate these clearly, concisely, and enthusiastically to a team. Being organised and aware of time constraints while remaining courteous and respectful in stressful situations are also important leadership qualities.

How you will be assessed

Communication skills include written and verbal abilities, as well as interpersonal skills. In your working life, you will have to deal with different people of varying levels. Sometimes, you will even have to deal with people of diverse nationalities based in other countries, and time zones. As such, it is important for you to adapt your style of communication when necessary.

Group exercises may be a key tool for assessing your leadership potential, but this does not mean that you should try to take charge of your group from start to finish. A pushy candidate forcefully taking the lead will be viewed negatively. However, it is important to speak out when you have something productive to say, or to challenge a view that you think is incorrect.

How you will be assessed In group tasks, you may find that other candidates have been given different information from you, and that you need to negotiate and decide among yourselves which aspects are most important. Recruiters are impressed by hopefuls who not only appreciate and respect each other while still getting the task done, but also make sure everyone gets their say, and, if they challenge other group members, do so in an appropriate way.

What is it? Working in a team makes up a huge part of working life, so recruiters look for applicants who realise that they can achieve more as part a team, rather than as individuals, and focus on working towards common goals.

How you will be assessed Employers value graduates who actively participate; are open, honest and respectful; as well as support others. For instance, behaviour such as listening to what others have to say, building other candidates’ confidence, and encouraging quieter teammates will be noted.

Problem solving skills

What is it? At its core, it is finding innovative solutions to challenges the company is facing. How you will be assessed At assessment centres, you may be given a task involving a lot of information, so it is wise to note down what you think are the most important points in a fashion that works for you, perhaps in a chart or flow diagram. Remember, your notes may be collected and analysed afterwards by the assessors. This can count in your favour if you were on the right track, but unable to get your points across to other team members. In an interview, you may also be asked to think of an example of a problem you solved, describe how you tackled it, what the outcome was, and what you took from the experience.

Planning 05 skills What is it? At work, you may have to plan your own day-to-day tasks and those of others, as well as organising long-term projects. How good are you at breaking down tasks, monitoring progress, and making contingency plans? Do you typically take the lead in planning and organising how to progress with group work or social events? How you will be assessed You may be asked in an interview about how you planned a project or event – for example, a university activity, sporting event, academic assignment or personal project – and look at what you did right, and what you learned from it. The leadership and problem solving behaviour you show in group tasks, such as considering who will be responsible for what, are also relevant here.

Adaptability and flexibility

What is it? Some positions may expect you to be flexible geographically. However, even if a job requires less travel, employers will still keep an eye out for a flexible mind set keen to deal with new methods and processes; enthusiasm for doing new things; and a willingness to take on tasks or roles that may not have their structure mapped out.

How you will be assessed Doing your homework when you apply will help. In group exercises, assessors may throw in challenges to see how you adapt. For example, they may wait until the task is well under way before saying that the customer has changed his or her mind about what he or she wants.

Motivation and enthusiasm

What is it? Enthusiasm is important in your work with others. To engage and lead a team while working well with customers, it is a big help to be keen about the task at hand; you need to believe in something yourself to be able to sell it to others, after all.

An ability 08 to build relationships What is it? Professionals must be able to understand and build relationships with their customers, suppliers, teams, managers and other key stakeholders. It is often not possible to choose who you work with, so you need to be able to assess others’ behaviour and adapt to them. How you will be assessed Again, recruiters will observe how you interact with other hopefuls in group exercises, and may ask you relevant questions in interviews. For instance, they may ask you to give an example of a time you dealt with a difficult person.

How you will be assessed Recruiters will be keen to identify genuine enthusiasm. Help yourself out by doing your homework on the organisations you are applying to. Ask yourself these questions: What do they do? Where are they located? Are the roles on offer really what you want? In group exercises, showing enthusiasm can help bring the team together and lead it forward. In interviews, make sure you mention projects, roles or interests you are particularly passionate about, even if they are not directly related to the position.

FIVE SOFT SKILLS FOR STEM The STEM sector requires a lot of hard skills, right? Well, while you are not entirely wrong, there are still a few soft skills you need.

A

s a graduate fresh out of university still riding the unique high of convocation, you may have found an innate tendency to focus on industryspecific and academic skills – and hey, you have earned your bragging rights, too. However, keep in mind that recruiters are looking out for more than just paper qualifications. With all other things equal, it is really your soft skills that will make you stand out from the rest. On top of that, these soft skills will be incredibly vital once you start work. Most areas of work in STEM necessitate multiple teams across different disciplines, and making complex analyses may even draw in a large group. In other words, cooperation within a team is one of the deciding factors of a project’s success – or failure. That said, here are five soft skills you need in this industry.

1. An ability to work in a team Many positions in the STEM sector involve team-based work, and this is why most employers will specify, at some point or another, that they are looking for candidates who can work well in teams. Effective skills in teamwork means knowing how to operate smoothly and efficiently with others as a collective group. This will call upon your capacity of being a team player, or even a team leader, and requires good communication and social skills, as well as the ability to compromise and negotiate in a professional manner. Still, all this talk about teamwork does not mean that you should forgo your individualism in your applications! Do your best to strike a balance between your individuality even as you emphasise your aptitude for teamwork during your applications and interviews.

2. Interpersonal skills The ability to communicate effectively, accurately, and clearly both with clients and colleagues is a vital skill to have in the professional sphere. As such, having solid interpersonal skills and being a good communicator means that you can deliver a message in a conspicuous and efficient manner. These skills are especially important in some consultancy roles as expert technical information may need to be conveyed in non-specialist language, and many researchbased jobs in the sector will also have you presenting findings and papers to a crowd with minimal jargon. However, communication is a two-way street as well, and a big part of it is being an active listener. Try to process questions fully before responding to them in order to not only avoid miscommunication, but also to ensure that your answers are thoughtful and address any concerns or uncertainties. Interpersonal skills include non-verbal communication too. Take note of your body language and remember to have good etiquette at work – stand up, greet, and exchange handshakes with others, especially if it is your first time meeting them.

3. Adaptability Being adaptable is essential in today’s world, given how quickly industries are changing thanks to rapid developments in technology. In STEM, change may come in the form of a new instrument that revolutionises laboratory work; advances in methodologies that result in modified work protocol; or even access to big data, transforming the way information is used in research. Adaptability also means being quick to adjust to new and challenging situations, and employers greatly value graduates who are able to familiarise themselves with new environments swiftly. Be receptive to new ideas and working with diverse groups of people as well, and keep pace with developments by putting in the effort to pick up new skills or programmes. In addition, challenge yourself by pushing the limits of your comfort zone by working in unfamiliar environments. Most importantly, never forget to showcase examples of your adaptability in interviews to prospective employers in order to give them a glimpse into how you will adjust to changes in the future.

4. Problem solving and critical thinking skills Critical thinking and problem solving abilities may not be some criterion employers explicitly state in job descriptions, but it is something they keep an eagle eye out for in all applicants. After all, candidates with problem solving skills generally have superior analytical and logical thought processes, along with the capacity to think out of the box to find solutions to issues they encounter. Most critical thinkers also tend to exhibit level-headedness and resilience as they handle stressful situations by remaining objective to assess the problem, consider solutions and possible outcomes, and then take action in a decisive manner.

5. Emotional intelligence No matter how bright you may be, you cannot get anything done well if you do not know how to get along with your colleagues! This is why recruiters look out for emotional intelligence in graduate applicants. Emotional intelligence is all about your ability to perceive and evaluate other people’s emotions, and to assess and control your own under a variety of circumstances. In a workplace environment, this includes being empathetic, managing stress well, being aware of the impact of your words and actions, and being understanding and accommodating in a professional capacity. Even if your job has you working in a lab or cubicle all day, employers need to be assured that they are not hiring someone who does not know how to deal with others, or – even worse – someone who is abrasive and disruptive. The important thing is to keep cool and remain professional and objective no matter how much stress you may be under.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO WITH A STEM-RELATED DEGREE? Having a STEM-related degree does not tie you down to the relevant industries forever.

J

ust because you have a STEM-related degree does not mean that you have to be stuck in a STEM-related job forever! The best thing about these degrees is that it equips you with skills – in logical thinking, problem solving and numeracy – that are technical enough for a specialised sector, yet general enough to be transferrable to other areas of work. Most companies have positions where STEM graduates can combine their existing technical skills with commercial, financial, and management opportunities. Here are some alternative career options.

1 Logistics Whenever something has to be moved from one place to another – whether it is the transport of raw materials to a manufacturing facility or distribution of retail products to consumers – it falls under the purview of logistics. You will be responsible for everything that is related to the process: the planning and financial costs, processing and tracking orders, liaising with other departments, and so on. Two of your main concerns will be expenses and deadlines, so your job will include balancing quality service and timely delivery while minimising costs. Some of the skills needed: • Problem solving and logical thinking skills to tackle urgent last-minute problems • Most situations will boil down to a cost-benefit analysis. You will need to be able to consider the impact of your choices on the business as a whole

• Good interpersonal skills – you will need to be clear and precise when managing colleagues and customers, especially when you need to be firm with them.

2 Operations

management

Operations management bridges the manufacturing and business sides of a company, linking them to form an efficient supply chain. As such, work in this area is very diverse; you can be involved in nearly everything – from the purchasing of raw materials, to the delivery of a complete product to a customer. Roles in this area are primarily occupied with planning and implementing strategies to increase productivity and reduce costs. As such, these notable attributes are required in this type of work: • Analytical skills to deduce necessary information from compiled data • Critical thinking skills to solve problems that may have a huge impact on a process • The ability to see the overall picture and final objectives even as you focus on improving specific areas.

Procurement, 3 purchasing, and buying Procurement is all about scouting for, and purchasing, equipment, parts, and materials for projects at the right price and quality. You will have to prepare a

list of suppliers and quotations to select from; check on the quality, prices, and schedules; and liaise with transporters and logisticians to ship purchases to the right place at the right time. Engineers tend to be well-suited for this job because of their familiarity with specific parts, equipment, and materials, which means that they can help with quality control. However, this does not mean that graduates in other areas of STEM are not! Here are are other qualities that you will need for this line of work: • Meticulousness and accuracy in your calculations and handling of the purchases. Some orders can be worth millions of dollars!

manufacturing processes, and logistics to maintain a steady supply of products to customers, ensuring that nothing is delivered late or lost. To succeed, you will have to learn to strike a balance between providing good customer service and minimising costs. You will also need to understand the functions of other teams as well as their individual roles to improve processes and act as a liaison between different parts of the operation. Many STEM graduates branch out to this particular field because of its focus on quantitative skills, and their backgrounds help with picking up the necessary technical knowledge. This can, in turn, lead to better business decisions. Pay attention to these skills: • Analytical and investigative skills to seek out new opportunities and strategies that may boost profits

• The ability to work under pressure and think fast because you may have to contend with tight deadlines and last-minute problems • Good communication and negotiation skills to bargain with vendors • Good technical understanding of the process that you are purchasing for. You will need to accurately gauge timescales and the impact of any changes you make.

Supply chain management

Supply chain management manages raw materials, production lines,

• Effective interpersonal skills, as you will be working with people from a variety of backgrounds – from business managers to line technicians.

5 Technical

consulting

Technical consulting offers broader business-oriented opportunities, and usually involves using mathematical and computational theories to troubleshoot problems that impact the profitability of a business. Graduates with STEM-related degrees are highly sought after in this field for their technical knowledge. Newcomers usually start off in this line of work with research-based duties, but eventually move up into performing data analysis and statistical modelling to help clients solve commercial problems.

Other skills that will help you in this line of work: • An eye for detail, superior logical reasoning, and keen problem solving skills. You will be dealing with tremendously large volumes of data, also known as big data • Excellent interpersonal skills for presenting technical information and analyses to audiences from nontechnical backgrounds • Specialist knowledge to advise others on the implementation of specialised technology or equipment.

6 Technical sales A branch of sales that focuses on selling highly technical products or solutions to specialised clients, you will need to persuade clients that your organisation’s expertise and products can meet their requirements. This requires a solid understanding of both their business and their needs. A solid background in STEM is essential – you will need to understand clients’ technical issues and challenges, as well as how your firm can help them address those problems. Other skills that you may need as a successful technical salesperson: • A disciplined nature will help you remain level-headed in a sales environment, especially when under duress • Good communication and listening skills, as well as an eye for detail. You will need to absorb and interpret information on a regular basis • Self-motivation and a positive nature will make you more approachable, and will help with generating new business opportunities.

CONSIDERING A POSTGRADUATE DEGREE IN STEM Completing postgraduate studies can open up a plethora of new opportunities, but what are some of the things that you must consider before making your decision?

W

hile a postgraduate degree does not automatically lead to employment opportunities, it does greatly impact your career direction. It is highly advisable, however, to spend some time gaining experience in your field of choice before pursuing a postgrad, so that you will know for certain which area to specialise in over your course of study. In addition, years of dedication to an employer might also lead to some form of support from the company. Here is a brief outline of some of the certifications that STEM students may consider for their postgraduate studies, whether locally or overseas.

research-oriented. These two degrees are better suited if you plan to continue with a doctorate, as they will help you build a foundation in research skills. Working adults may opt for part-time courses instead, although they may take up to two or three years to complete. If you already hold a job, you may want to speak to your employer before applying for your course of choice to gauge the level of support they can provide you with – for example, allowing you to adopt a more flexible schedule to accommodate both work and school, or any form of financial backing.

MA courses

While all can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), engineering graduates have the option of looking at a Doctor of Engineering (EngD) as well, and each caters to different needs. A PhD is the highest degree in STEM, and usually takes about three to four years to complete. With much intensive coursework, it also involves a lot of groundbreaking inquiries, and generally results in dissertations and academic publications. Because of this, though, it is typically recommended for those drawn to a career in academia. You will primarily be guided by a supervisor as you conduct your research, although there will be plenty of opportunities to work alongside other PhD students and researchers as well.

Most master’s courses typically take no more than a year for a full-time student, so this will give you the allowance to specialise in a specific area of interest. There are many types of courses available, and include options such as Master of Science (MSc), Master of Research (MRes), and Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Each degree provides you with in-depth knowledge of a specific subject, but have very different course structures. For instance, MSc is course-based and may sometimes require the submission of a short dissertation. On the other hand, MRes and MPhil are usually

Doctorate courses

While some may opt to do a purely academic PhD, many others incorporate industry-related training from an industry partner for a more practical and handson experience instead. On top of that, depending on university requirements, you may have to commit at least three months to working on the industry partner’s premises. An EngD student, on the other hand, usually focus on researching about, and finding solutions, to contemporary industrial issues in the sector, and can take up to four years to complete. While EngD students are required to go for taught courses on specialist technical and professional development subjects related to the area of research, onsite industrial training will take up nearly 75 per cent of their time. Those who have graduated with an EngD also typically go on to become highly-specialised experts in their own field, and guide others interested in their area of expertise.


STEM | HOW TO GET HIRED

Funding In Singapore, there are scholarships offered by universities, government bodies, and companies to help postgraduate students. However, you will need to communicate with the respective departments for more information. For instance, the NUS Graduate School offers the Commonwealth Scholarship for Integrative Sciences and Engineering for students from any of the Commonwealth countries, whereas A*STAR has the National Science Scholarship and various collaborations with international universities around the globe. You may also want to keep an eye out for international scholarships offered by various third-party funding organisations.

Location Opting to study locally or at your alma mater is a good idea given that you will be familiar with the culture and staff in the university, and may also get special waivers or access to additional sources of funds. However, do not completely reject the idea of furthering your studies in a different institution or country! Doing your postgraduate studies in a new environment will give you the chance to explore new networks, academic sources, and expertise. Be sure to run a basic check on the institution’s admission requirements, facilities provided, and the resources that will be made available to you, though.

Naming your salary and negotiating it right may help you land the position of your dreams. ost of us are acquainted with the part of a meteorologist’s job that entails the weather forecast during the evening news. This is only part of their job – in fact, meteorologists also predict weather conditions for marine and aeronautical use, crucial in keeping people safe. Previously, weather predictions were made based on past weather patterns until it was discovered that it was possible to make more accurate predictions by applying physics and using special instruments such as hygrometers and barometers. Computers are also used to make complex calculations which model the weather to help meteorologists with forecasting. However, some meteorologists choose to go into research and development, with their work involving climate modelling or other atmospheric data instead.

Career overview Training is provided on-the-job for operational meteorologists, although a bachelor’s degree in a field such as physics, mathematics, meteorology or geosciences is a requirement. Being good with computer software is highly advantageous as

Career overview As writing is a skill that can only be developed through practice, many science writers tend to get their start by gathering experience in general writing such as journalism and copywriting before moving into the field. TOP THREE TRENDS THAT IT AND TECHNOLOGY GRADUATES SHOULD KNOW Singapore is presently focused on the development and pervasive adoption of digital and smart technologies.

Trend #1 Cloud computing This is certainly not a new trend, but with the adoption of cloud services still surging for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cloud computing is continuing to make waves in the industry. This is made possible by the fact that SMEs make up about 99 per cent of companies in Singapore, and contribute to almost half of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Because of these factors, according to top consultant firm KPMG, platform-asa-service is predicted to be the fastestgrowing in cloud computing, and forecast to soar to 56 per cent in 2020, up from 32 per cent in 2017. In other words, this means that the industry can expect more intense competition, more consolidation among cloud service providers, and lower prices for small business and enterprise users. The Lion City has already emerged as one of the biggest adopters of cloud technology in the Asia Pacific region, and with cloud computing seen as an integral cog in Singapore’s Smart Nation plan, it will continue to be a central component in a majority of organisations in the coming years.

Trend #2 What this means for graduates Since most jobs in the cloud have simply been taken up by employees already working in IT and technology, there has not really been a huge demand for people with a cloud skill set. In addition, SMEs that have adopted cloud computing no longer need an internal IT department as most systems come with after sales services, making companies less reliant on their own departments to maintain and fix issues. But this is still the age of digital innovation, so demand is high for graduates specialising in cloud computing. However, keep in mind that most roles require a profound knowledge of specific technologies, such as Open Stack or Amazon Web Services. Cloud-computing candidates should also be adept in several programming languages and frameworks, such as Python and Java. While it is almost impossible to learn them all, focus on a couple of popular skills, such as Amazon Web Services, for instance, as it will likely continue to be a major cloud player over the next few years. But because the industry is so dynamic with new entrants regularly joining the fray, there may be a shift in dominance within the cloud scene.

Big data Word is that data is the new oil of the digital economy, and it does not take much to see why. Companies like Facebook and Google dominate the digital sphere because they mine millions of their users’ online habits, and use them to gain advertising revenue. They track the news clicked, any searches made, and even how long cursors hover in a particular section of a webpage. Considering Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are now billionaires, big data is a lucrative business if a firm knows how to make full use of it. But the industry is not just about getting advertising money. With today’s digital culture generating massive amounts of data, companies also use this data to gain insight into customer behaviour, learn more about their workforce, improve decision-making, and drive growth.

Trend #3 What this means for graduates More companies are delving into big data, even SMEs. The Singapore government has set aside $80m over the next four years under the SMEs Go Digital Programme to help local businesses with more advanced needs – such as data analytics and artificial intelligence. In tandem with the government’s support, demand for such major datacentric roles have increased by 50 per cent in the small country over the last two to three years, and will likely continue to increase together with wages for positions like data scientists and data analysts. However, the focus on big data is not uniform across all sectors, with telecommunications, IT development, life science and banking services employing most data specialists. Candidates keen on specialising in big data typically have backgrounds in computer science or mathematics. However, it takes more than just skills in tracking and gathering large amounts of data. Companies need their employees to have the business acumen to connect data with actions that will boost operations and profitability.

Cyber security The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) suffered a cyberattack in early 2017 that caused the personal details of about 850 national servicemen and MINDEF personnel to be leaked. While the attack was planned with the intention of gaining access to classified military data, the hackers failed to do so since MINDEF’s internal system was, and remains, separate from public terminals. Still, this incident is only one in several cases that occurred in Singapore over the years. According to security services provider, Quann, and research firm, IDC, up to 91 per cent of businesses in the city-state are still in the early stages of building a proper security system. In addition, more than half, or 54 per cent, of respondents did not even have a security operations centre to monitor their networks and security devices for any suspicious traffic. The cyber security landscape is slated to change as the industry is listed as one of the emerging growth sectors in Singapore’s digital economy. According to CNA, the local cyber security market was expected to to generate 2,500 jobs by 2018, and is still anticipated to reach $900m by 2020. In addition, the government is pumping more than $16m into the country’s cyber security research and development (R&D) to strengthen the sector.

What this means for graduates The government’s investments mean there is a strong focus on the recruitment and training of skilled individuals who are looking to pursue cyber security as a career option, especially within the public sector. MINDEF, for example, with a new short-term contract scheme, trains fulltime national servicemen who have an aptitude for cyber security to be cyber defenders in the regular service. And with the law of supply and demand at work, IT and technology graduates, who start in the cyber security field, generally receive a starting salary that is 10 to 15 per cent higher than their peers from other faculties, according to IT security firm CyberArk. For those looking to take up a cyber security-focused role, look out for the following key phrases in the job description: penetration testing, malware testing, threat intelligence, security monitoring, security risk, and security compliance.

onsider this: nearly 99 per cent of all registered businesses in Singapore today are small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that employ 65 per cent of the workforce and contribute to approximately half of the national gross domestic product (GDP). By extension, this means that up to 70 per cent of engineering graduates will most likely end up launching their careers with smaller engineering firms. With so many graduates finding employment with small engineering businesses, it will be good to take a look at how applications to such companies differ from applying to bigger conglomerates. After all, big corporations are not the only organisations with impressive opportunities – SMEs can offer graduates very competitive prospects too!

Training and salaries While most SMEs will not be able to provide internationally-approved training programmes, what they can promise is a lot of on-the-job training and involvement. You will likely be given a variety of responsibilities right off the bat that will help you pick up a range of skills, and as a result, you may find yourself developing just as fast – if not faster – than in an actual rotating graduate programme. Recognition for your work may even come faster than you expect! Unfortunately, salary-wise, SMEs may not be able to offer as much as a large company. However, the gap is not so big that it deters graduates from working with them, and most try to keep up with the market average, offering competitive remuneration through other nonmonetary benefits instead.

Finding a job in an SME Regrettably, this is no longer as simple as flipping open the newspaper or logging into a job search portal. When it comes to recruiting graduate engineers, most firms prefer a more financially-sustainable form of advertisement: collaboration with university career services centres. That is not the only reason, though. Many smaller businesses tend to have highly-specific needs, and career services centres can help them by pre-screening suitable students and graduates according to any requirements for both internships and employment opportunities. Due to the specialised nature of the work involved, students may be exposed to a different form of industrial experience, rather than the kind offered by conventional giants. It should also be worth noting that “small” does not necessarily mean “nameless”; there are plenty of highlyspecialised, world-renowned engineering employers who operate in the Lion City as SMEs, either because of their specialised work, or for the tax incentives they can get from being classified as a smaller business. As is the case with most other employers, smaller engineering firms favour experienced candidates who can offer immediate contributions. So, in order to compete with other job hunters, you will have to go the extra mile by gaining relevant work or internship experience to prove you can hit the ground running. This translates to starting early – and multitasking. Engineering employers especially like graduates who have demonstrated an ability to successfully manage several projects or responsibilities simultaneously. Pinpoint instances where you have juggled a few responsibilities with positive results, and highlight those in your resume. Do not just focus on selling yourself, though. Job searches are all about matching what you have to offer with a organisation’s needs, and it is no different with SMEs. Make sure you also consider these other factors while applying as well: • Find out as much specific information about the company as you possibly can, such as their corporate aims and objectives, the type of projects they usually focus on, as well as any stances they may have on social responsibilities • Demonstrate that your existing knowledge can contribute to improving the enterprise’s performance • Indicate your enthusiasm in working with them by following up with a phone call or an enquiry email after submitting your application. Most apprenticeships typically consist of three parts: • An introduction to the basic engineering principles needed for the job and their application in daily circumstances • An extended education component for any necessary academic qualifications • An industrial year where you earn credits towards your degree by working with the employer. As a matter of fact, the organisation is not just about posters hanging in hallways or demographic statistics on a report. Instead, they proudly tout their diversity, wielding and applying it. “To me, diversity is just a potential. If you hire a diverse group of people, well, you have potential in the company,” Naga Chandrasekaran, Senior Vice President, Process R&D and Operations, said. And it is this seemingly small potential that leads Micron to something greater: innovation. The process of innovation begins with different ideas and points-

Women in STEM According to a 2017 study by McKinsey & Company, looking to the skilled yet underutilised pool of women could play a major part in the present war for talent taking place in STEM, boosting innovation while adapting to an ever-changing world and its dynamic consumer trends. In the study, it was also found that organisations with three or more women in positions of senior management scored higher in accountability, capability, control, coordination, direction, external orientation, innovation, leadership, values, and work environment than other companies who did not. “When women sit on an executive committee, the nature of interactions changes,” a board member of a banking group featured in the McKinsey & Company report, disclosed. “But, one woman there is not enough, you need several of them.”

Diversity, equality and inclusion are values Micron holds close to its core, and its recent appointment of Sharawn Connors, the organisation’s first vice president of Diversion, Equality and Inclusion proves their devotion to the cause.

This was no small issue to Micron, and women now make up a quarter of the Board of Directors. Moreover, according their 2019 Diversity, Equality and Inclusion report, having identified a significant opportunity in raising women to roles in senior management, the company established a formal women’s sponsorship programme, the Micron Women’s Leadership Network (MWLN), that saw women paired with senior leaders for visibility and advocacy. Due to the competitive nature of this industry, it is common for materials suppliers to differentiate themselves through value-added approaches. One such approach is through specialisation – focusing on specialised products such as coated steel, rare metal alloys, or the development of materials for specific purposes.

here is a broad range of work in the pharmaceuticals sector, from drug manufacturing and development work, such as classic pharmaceuticals like prescribed medicines, biopharmaceuticals such as vaccines, medical technology, and consumer business much like over thecounter medicines. Singapore is also widely acknowledged as a top-rated clinical and biomedical research and development (R&D) centre in Asia, with a growing pharmaceutical field – in spite of overall reductions in the manufacturing industry as a whole. To put things in perspective, pharmaceutical companies invested $440 million in 2017, a sharp boost from the $197 million seen in 2012. The Lion City government also formed the Experimental Drug Development Centre (EDDC) in 2019 to better integrate and organise the country’s pharmaceuticals ecosystem. Its continued growth and highly advanced status has managed to attract leading biomedical companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, which have, in turn, contributed to a highly innovative and competitive industry landscape.

Career overview P h a r m a c e u t i ca l e n g i n e e rs a re mostly engaged in researching and manufacturing prescriptions and products. However, they may also work alongside pharmacists and chemists to develop active medicinal ingredients before synthesising them into consumable products, or maintain and optimise pharmaceutical production facilities. As technologies and operational requirements evolve, we need to continuously review and adapt our solutions to be effective, sustainable and resilient. 8:30AM:

Upon reaching the office, I make a list of tasks to complete. I lead a team on multiple agile capability development tracks, so it is key to set priorities and ensure everyone is on the same page. Time is critical when delivering capabilities, especially in our area of work. The defence and security landscape is fast-paced and evolving, so it is important to stay ahead of current and emerging threats while working to enhance the SAF’s capabilities. At the same time, the systems we acquire must meet operational needs and be cost-effective. We thus adopt a systems engineering approach to look at each use case in its entirety, taking into account all the facets, variables, and design of the system. Our work gives us many opportunities to be innovative – from finding new ways to harness technology to adding value to the solutions we deliver. We also conduct operational trials together with the SAF at camps and test sites. These trials provide hands-on opportunities to adapt and fine-tune the systems’ performance. 10:00AM: Around mid-morning, I am normally working on my projects. People often ask what keeps me going, after 13 years at this job. There are many reasons – the validation I receive that my work is important in shaping Singapore’s defence, the numerous opportunities to work on leading-edge technologies, and the interesting variety of projects I have experienced! I am grateful to have delivered many key capabilities and supported various major events. Each had its own challenges and I am glad I was able to overcome them together with my team. For example, I was called to support the SAF’s urgent requirements two weeks before the 2018 Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore. Despite the tight timeline, we pushed through and successfully deployed the system with close collaboration between my team and our SAF partners. It was definitely rewarding to see how our hard work contributed towards Singapore’s security. The 28th South East Asian Games was also memorable. I was the technical lead supporting the implementation of the audio system at the new National Stadium. Due to its unique domed roof, optimising the sound performance was challenging, but our team was determined to find a solution. Together with the sound designer and audio production team, we developed the required add-on speaker arrays’ specifications and quantities. 2:00PM: As a Senior Programme Manager, I mentor young engineers’ growth and development. I hold regular meetings with them to see how their projects are progressing. Having a supportive culture in DSTA is important as we work closely together as a team to brainstorm and deliver our projects. Our senior supervisors also offer advice and encouragement readily, and create opportunities for us to share our work and insights with our colleagues. 6:30PM: On a typical day, I head home to spend time with my family. However, the work of a defence engineer is dynamic and fast-paced, where we are ready to undertake challenging projects that are important for our nation’s defence. I appreciate DSTA’s flexible work arrangements and supportive culture which enables me to balance work and family commitments well. Getting my morning dose of design inspiration puts me in the right headspace to approach problems. 11:00AM: We have our monthly all-hands meeting which involves various business verticals and teams. I appreciate that our founders – Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling – are very involved with employees of the company, strongly encouraging us to ask questions whenever we are in doubt of any company-wide decisions. I really admire their genuine relationship with Grabbers as it really gives us a sense of belonging at Grab. 1:00PM: On Fridays, my team has lunch together and we make a point to go somewhere out of the office. We explore restaurants and cafes together, and it is a great way to get to know each other on a more personal level. 2:00PM: I get a Slack message on my team chat informing us there is ice cream in the pantry. An old-school ice cream truck comes to the office every two weeks, and you can be sure I am always the first in line! Chocolate chip in classic rainbow bread is my go-to without fail. In the line, I spot a Grabber visiting from our Vietnam office and briefly explain the history behind the ice cream truck. We have a great conversation about how the diverse company culture in Grab facilitates culture and knowledge sharing. 3:00PM:

I have projects with dependencies across various teams in the company – a lot of products at Grab are multi-faceted in nature and involve many stakeholders. I attend a workshop where we talk to product managers, engineers and researchers to understand how my project will impact their workflow. Alignment with stakeholders is essential to ensure smooth delivery of a product to our users. 4:00PM: We have a design critique every week where we are encouraged to share our designs and get feedback early. I share about a project that I am working on and my team’s feedback was refreshing. Sometimes when you work on a project for too long, you need a fresh pair of eyes to give you a different perspective. After every design critique, I always feel a sense of excitement to push my design limits to the next level. 5:00PM: I join the Intern Open House as a representative from Product Design and share my experience with Grab as a Product Design Trainee. I greatly appreciate the time given to me by those who came in order to understand more about what we do at Grab Design. Connecting with my fellow juniors from Singapore Management University (SMU) was a “full circle” moment for me as I was once in their position, speaking to my seniors about my career aspirations. 6:00PM: Whenever I am on a Grab ride, I take the opportunity to interact with the driver and get feedback for the driver app. Talking to drivers is a way for me to understand their story and how they are using our platform. 8:00AM: After sending my kids to school, I drive to the office, assisted by Waze, to avoid unnecessary traffic delays. As a data scientist in the Quality Service Department, I can relate well to this concept of improving people’s daily lives through the use of data analytics and data science. On a typical day, I prioritise urgent tasks or requests from colleagues or other departments who need support on projects, or have questions that may cover anything from service delivery operations to policy reviews. These may range from data analytics to building data models. However, there are also times when we have to politely decline requests as analytics is not what is needed. 10:00 AM: I enjoy our culture of sharing and collaboration to find solutions as a team, and we often have discussions and progress updates for current projects. At the same time, we also share our new ideas or hypotheses about algorithms and methodologies related to data mining or machine learning. This is where we make new discoveries, which we cross-check to ensure validity, and conduct probes. 12:30PM: Lunch time is always a departmental-level affair, unless some of us are away at external meetings. We always take our time to enjoy the food and discuss the latest happenings. A post-lunch cuppa is also a must! After that, I usually check-in with the team to see if they have any observations or insights to offer about the department’s quality service data models and analyses, and we work together to identify the root cause and factors of key issues. Time is also well-spent in ensuring that the answers or solutions are translated for easy storytelling and not in our analytical jargon; after all, we believe that small changes can make a big difference in customer experience. 2:00 PM:

On occasion, in order to better understand the data or lack thereof, we partner our department colleagues to delve into other business functions in order to understand the policies, processes and even legal aspects behind the issues. These thorough analyses have broadened my horizons with crucial collective experience, backed by the collaborative spirit that surrounds us at MINDEF. I think this is what makes a DXO career unique. It is a challenging training ground which sharpens our skills while offering opportunities for both breadth and depth in career development. 4:00PM: If time permits, I try to allocate some time for self-learning, and I might have a chat with the data science team to pick their brains and get some tips on data analytics, which we share with the rest of the department. 6:30PM: I head home for dinner with my family.

After that, I facilitated a “Reducing Carbon Footprint” project in my Secondary 2 Design & Technology (D&T) class where the students were tasked to solve day-to-day problems using technology to save resources – and very excited to use micro:bit, a pocket-sized customisable computer that can help bring digital ideas to life. I also worked with a team who was developing a device for the refrigerator that reminds users to keep its doors shut by sounding an alert when the door is ajar.

8:45AM: I demonstrated to the class how a quick mock-up using cardboard could be used to further refine their ideas for a micro:bit casing. The students were raring to give it a go, but it was time to wrap up and summarise the lesson. 9:00AM: My Secondary 4 class was tasked to research design opportunities on the theme “leisure” and present them. I was heartened to hear interesting ideas, such as a product that allowed wheelchair users easy access to gardening tools and small pots, and enabling them to garden. Another student shared an idea to attach a flashlight to umbrellas and walking sticks, increasing user visibility at night and on the roads – and particularly useful for the elderly. After asking the class to give constructive feedback on these preliminary ideas, I made plans to meet some students for individual consultations after school. 10:30AM: Recess break! I usually have a heavy meal and try to join my colleagues at the canteen for a chat; as the School Staff Developer, it is important that I get to know everyone in the school. We normally chat about current affairs and holiday plans as I try to keep work discussions to a minimum. 11:00AM: Having some free time before my next lesson, I start planning the upcoming Staff Professional Development session, where I will be sharing the school’s work plans and objectives, and send a quick message to my team members from the Staff Learning and Development Committee to arrange a short meeting next week. As I am planning our school’s June Staff Retreat as well, I take the time to browse online for some ideas on possible activities. 12:30PM:

I am off to the next lesson with my Secondary 3 D&T class where I showed how a buffing machine can be used safely to polish acrylics before the students begin. When that was over, I walked around the room to oversee and provide assistance to my students. 3:00PM: I chair an Instructional Programme (IP) Committee meeting where IP Heads brainstorm on how they can analyse the assessment data from the Weighted Assessment to help students improve. We also discuss the implementation of the Staff E-portfolio as well as potential challenges. Productive meetings leave us with some areas to work on before our next session. 4:30PM: I look through my timetable for the next day and prepare some lesson materials. I check the online Student Learning Space for available resources on the topic I will be teaching tomorrow. 5:30PM Calling it a day, I get on my bike and head home. I hope it does not rain!

As an Air Force Engineer, we are held to very high standards to ensure the airworthiness of the aircraft and systems. As such, it is imperative that we continuously develop our technical competency and knowledge to do our job well. I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to attend numerous professional training courses, both overseas and local, which has helped deepen my engineering expertise. Experience and skills I was the Officer Commanding (OC) of Communication, Navigation and Electronic Warfare Flight in 808 Squadron, where I led a team of Air Force Engineers to manage and maintain the systems on board the F-16D+. I lead the team to rectify aircraft and provide engineering solutions to ensure that the aircraft systems were fit for flight.

Upon arrival at the office, and my colleagues and I greet each other with simple nods. I will then start work by checking meeting schedules and emails. As mornings are usually reserved for project meetings, I briefly review the progression of project verification plans, and summarise progress of different tests I have been assigned. During project meetings, it is vital to align with supervisors and colleagues on short-term – around two days – and long-term schedules that may last a week or more. We also discuss issues flagged during different tests, evaluate them, and figure out our next steps. After the meeting, I spend most of my time conducting verification tests in either the lab or the office, and gather results. Once a failure is found, I flag it immediately and give feedback to the Cross Functional Team (XFT) to ensure quality of design. 11:30AM: The time that everyone looks forward to – lunch! There are many food options near my company, and the food is tasty and cheap. I either have lunch by myself or with my team, though I enjoy eating with different teams as well. Although conversations are sometimes work-related, most of the time, my colleagues and I relax and have fun, catching up on each other’s lives. Other popular topics include Huawei, 5G, yoga classes, and gym schedules. This time is always filled with laughter and satisfaction, and the friendships formed help build trust in our work relationships too. 1:30PM: Having gathered data from tests in the morning, I move on to data analysis. It is imperative that verification and validation engineers ensure tests details are correctly documented and no information is missing as when issues pop up after data analysis, a single person does not handle it, but the whole team. I spend some time exchanging opinions with XFT team members, and consult my manager as well. 3:00PM: Time to go for a one-on-one meeting with my manager, my favourite meeting of the day as we can get to know one another better. I bring up any frustrations encountered at work, both personal and project-related, and my manager will always try to help me. Her positive attitude and professional perspectives enlarge my view and often point out things I have never noticed before. Our company encourages us to choose an interest group that meets for an hour at 4PM on Wednesdays. Some go for runs, and others play badminton. There are so many talented people in the organisation, there is even a yoga class! 5:30PM: I finish up my day’s work by personally logging in what I have done that day. After sending out any remaining important emails and reminders for meetings, I will check if others want to leave, and depart the office together with them.
