We have decided to make “homecoming” a feature in each newsletter to feature dogs that have been adopted from us over the years. Send us a picture (identify everyone in it, please) with your dog’s name, when you adopted it, your name and a few words or more about your dog. Full length stories are welcomed, too! When you submit your pictures for publication in print, please submit an original digital image of no less than 300 dpi. If you aren’t sure of the dpi, send the original and we’ll check the possibility for use. We can make pictures smaller but we can not make them larger. Don’t worry about the file size; if you can send it, we can receive it. If you can’t send it, let us know. We’ll show you a way that it can be sent.

Fall: A Time for Thanks H
ere we go with another change of seasons already – where does the time go? It’s been a great summer for our goldens, and now fall is here. Before we know it, we’ll be celebrating the holidays and starting a new year. Speaking of that, have you seen the 2015 SEVA GRREAT calendar yet? It looks amazing. So many thanks go to Liz Sumner for producing such a beautiful calendar to help us raise funds for the rescue. I’d also like to thank all of our generous calendar sponsors. Their ads offset the costs of printing the calendar, so the money from each calendar sold goes directly to the medical needs of our goldens. You will see our sponsors’ads in this and upcoming editions of GRREAT Times. If you are in need of goods or services, consider visiting our calendar sponsors to thank them for supporting SEVA GRREAT. And if you don’t have your calendar yet, they are available at all of our events, and will be on sale through the website soon.

Announcing VB Dog Day Afternoon SEVA GRREAT is excited to introduce and partner with VB Dog Day Afternoon, dedicated to raising funds for hard-working rescues. Established by one of our wonderful volunteers, we are thrilled for the support and opportunity to work together with other rescues to help more animals. The first fundraising event will take place on Sunday November 9th from 4-8pm at the Royal Courtyard, located at 329 Birchwood Park Drive in Virginia Beach. Featuring a North
Carolina catered BBQ, dancing to the tunes of Larry Williams of WFOS, live and silent auction/ raffles and more, this promises to be a fun event. 100% of the proceeds will be shared with SEVA GRREAT, GO Rescue Pet Adoption, and Mastiffs to Mutts Rescue. We need your support and participation to make it a huge success! In addition to attending the event, we are looking for merchandise, trips, event tickets and services, etc. for the auction/raffles. We also welcome event sponsors. So if you or someone you

Max enjoys a stick.
O
nce he was afraid of so much; his foster had written that he seemed shy of men, and when he joined our family, he also seemed to fear trucks, motorcycles, air planes, garbage cans, loud noises, and thunder. Over the years he has been exposed to so many situations and through training has learned to trust people. Soon he showed that he adored human contact as well as canine friendship, so it was time to put him to work. Week by week he learned what he was and was not supposed to do as a therapy dog then on June 22, 2014, he put his skills to the test. With head held high and tail wagging he walked through crowds, ignored hot dogs, walked around wheel chairs and stopped to be petted by the patient in the chair, consented to be led away by a stranger, ignored screams, horns, a vacuum cleaner, and various other things meant to startle him, did a perfect sit/ down/stay recall followed by a sit/down/ stay holding the position, and flawlessly heeled and reversed. He sat face to face with other dogs never making eye contact or flinching, and masterfully completed every aspect of what was asked of him. Thus on June 22,2014, Max passed the Therapy Dog International test and will soon visit those who will find that the 6
beauty of his outer being extends deep into his soul. John and I love him and will continue to help him adjust to the dreaded thunder storms while Roxy and Ally know they have a dear friend for life. Congratulations, Max, you are indeed a good boy!

W
hat do you do when you are a veterinarian that wants a Golden Retriever? Well, you contact the rescue groups, find the one with the most difficult medical problems and adopt it! In the spring we started our search for a Golden by contacting SEVA GRREAT and put in an application. One day in the course of my job as a veterinarian, I was consulting Dr. Meghan Daugherty from the VESC about a case. I mentioned to her that I was on the lookout for a Golden. She

told me about Blondie and her problems as an uncontrolled diabetic. My husband and I were nervous about taking on a dog with a medical need that would require a change to our lifestyle, but we agreed to meet her and go from there. There was some concern about how she would react to our cats as she had never been around them and had a strong drive to chase anything that runs. Well, it was love at first sight. She charmed us with her calm demeanor, her SMILE and squinty eyes. She didn’t seem to mind the cats, however they were in hiding mode when she came to visit. During her first week with us, she and our black cat got acquainted as she poked her head under the bed to say hello to him. A little cat growl, a dog whine, and the sound of scuffling feet and ever since Blondie gives all cats, even those in carriers a wide berth! We live in the country next to my parents, so Blondie has two large yards to run around in. We also have a pond on the property. One day as she was out for her walk, a large grass carp in the pond slapped his tail on the water, it frightened her so much she jumped straight up in the air! Blondie has adjusted well to her new home and routine. Each morning she rides with me to my veterinary clinic and hangs out in the doctor’s office. She is a social butterfly and every morning when we arrive she has to walk around the clinic and greet all the staff. During lunch she hangs out with the staff and hopes for someone to drop food or just give her a pat on the head. On occasion, Blondie has gotten into mischief, and when scolded, she gives you the squinty eyes and forlornly look that you just can’t be upset with. All in all Blondie has been a blessing to our family. She has filled the house with laughter over her playful attitude, her retriever manners such as carrying a toy around all the time, and her smile. Thanks SEVA GRREAT, Rose and Charles her foster parents for caring for Blondie for 3 years until we came along to fall in love with her! She has found her forever home! FALL 2014

Five year old, Bailey, is a true athlete! Basketball, tennis ball, baseball... she always has a ball with her! However, catching a football is her true passion! We are waiting for the NFL to discover her talent.
Murphy has found his forever home with Rick and Sue Burton. He has a pile of tennis balls, a huge back yard, and gorgeous new girlfriend named Ginger, and two humans who love him and will be with him all of time.

Just thought you’d like to see this happy picture of Avalanche, who we call Lance, who you rescued and sent to DVGRR where I work and adopted him. He was from a hoarder, who I hope was shut down by now, and was very fearful of people. Now he’s a happy boy who loves the dog park! He still barks at strangers, but has come a long way. Thank you for rescuing him, I couldn’t imagine life without him!

Miss Hailey and the New World
M
y entry into the New World has proven so fortunate that I feel obligated to put paw to paper and share this new chapter in my life. I’m still somewhat confounded by how something can seem scary and yet wonderful, all at the same time. Although overwhelmed at first, my feelings of nervous panic have begun to recede and be replaced by hope and curiosity. But first, a bit about myself and my journey so far. My name is Hailey. Although due to my age and delicate sensibilities, those who have helped me along the way refer to me as “Miss Hailey.” While I certainly appreciate the honorific, it seems a bit grand to apply to a lady such as myself. Raised in a land of borders limited by the walls of my humble pen, there was no opportunity for education or travel. What social interaction I did experience during those eleven lonely years left me fearful of life and wary of even the best intentions. My journey began during the second week 14
in September when, without any notice other than saying that “he was moving,” my owner removed me from my pen and took me to the local SPCA shelter. Having never experienced a situation such as this, I was terrified to say the least. To make matters even worse, my coat was dirty and matted and I had a large open wound on my nose…not my best day. Fortunately, the wonderful people of the northeastern North Carolina SPCA saw past my lack of social graces and unkempt appearance. They took me in and cared for me, showing much love and kindness even after discovering that I was heartworm positive. One of their volunteers, a very nice lady named Jo Smith, seemed quite taken with me and said I was her “special project.” She did her best to help me feel loved and safe, and I hope she realizes how much that meant to me. Jo was determined to find a foster home for me, so she contacted Largo Elston of SEVA GRREAT. Since the shelter was quite full and time was of the essence, Largo arranged to

have me taken into the rescue’s care that very next week. To make this a reality, many important arrangements had to be made. Quan Li, the Volunteer Coordinator, set up a relay of transporters to speed me on my way. First, Leslie Yawn picked me up at the shelter and drove me to the Acredale Animal Hospital where I was examined, tested and vaccinated. That same afternoon, another lady named Sean Hess took me onward to the Hampton area, where I was handed off to Judy Dyer. Judy carried me on the last leg of a long day’s journey to my foster home east of Williamsburg. What a trip! These wonderful volunteers should be on the Olympic relay team! And speaking of foster homes, at the same time my transportation was being planned, the rescue’s Foster Coordinator Katie Show got busy and found my foster home. All of these people must be angels to go to such effort for little old 42 pound me. As you can imagine, my memories of this whirlwind journey remain fragmented and

confused, affected greatly by my fears and uncertainties. My foster mom has helped me with the names and timeframe in order that I can recognize all of you who have made my new life possible. You went out of your way to save me, offering your time and compassion, while caring for both my physical and emotional needs. Because of your efforts I can honestly say, since I am now acquainted with the concept, I Love You. Always yours,

Note from Foster Mom Deborah Secrist: Although still very shy and instantly ready to shift into either flight high gear or pancake mode, Hailey has enjoyed learning how to receive and give love, kiss her foster brother on the nose and then steal his toys when he’s not looking, sit for treats, snuggle with the family after dinner and above all, the ecstatic joy of rolling in the grass. The weather was beautiful, and there was always a large crowd at our booth (no one can resist goldens). While it may have looked like “a day at the beach,” our 16

A Beautiful Day at the Beach goldens worked hard and collected lots of donations for the rescue. Special thanks also to Jerri Powell of Collars for Causes, who donated a generous portion of collar sales at the festival to SEVA GRREAT. She is an amazing lady who works tirelessly to support rescues, and we
truly appreciate her help. And one last WOOF of thanks to our friends at RK Subaru. They collected donations at their booth for SEVA GRREAT while making pet ID tags, and were also kind enough to “double match� what was collected. All in all, it was a GRREAT weekend! FALL 2014

Abby Abby came to us through SEVA GRREAT in November 2010 at the age of three. She was so well mannered and fit in very quickly. She loved chasing squirrels and going for walks and was a constant companion who didn’t know a stranger. She loved being groomed so she could wear her pretty scarf but didn’t worry about her weight. That was evident when she jumped on the scale at the vet to be weighted. She loved visiting with our son and his girlfriend’s dogs (both Golden Retrievers), Rex and Cody and playing outside. Unfortunately she inherited Golden Retriever Ichthyosis which was determined after many tests. This didn’t make us love her any less and we dealt with it with her wonderful groomer. This past spring we noticed some other things that did not seem right and completed more testing only to discover thyroid problems which eventually were determined to be Cushings. After beginning treatment for Cushings we found a lump which was diagnosed as a lymphoma. We had just completed all tests for the lymphoma and were ready to consult with an oncologist to begin chemotherapy. However, Abby’s health got worse with breathing and we had to see the emergency vet. We had to make one of the hardest decisions ever not to let her suffer any further and she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge the night of July 12, 2014. To all of our family and friends and any others who encountered Abby and immediately loved her as much as we did and especially to SEVA GRREAT, thank you. Abby will forever be a part of our family in our hearts and memories. –Marsha and Jim Witcher 20

Brandy Brandy was a rescue at 6 months. She was abused. She passed away on 9/17/14...exactly 11 years to the day we got her. She was loving, compasionate companion. Brandy was so intuitive to everyone’s needs and moods. She was so loving and understanding and comforting in times of need. She helped raise her “sister” Daisy, another golden who we got at 8 weeks old. Daisy is still mourning with us over the loss of Brandy. Our household will never be the same without our beloved Brandy. –Terry Langdon
Zani Zani was our heathy 8 yr old golden who all of a sudden died on 7/31/14 at 445pm in our arms at the vets office from a unknown illness. This is Zani, our beloved golden. – Cindy and John Fessler

Freddy It is with a heavy heart as I write this. I lost my buddy yesterday Aug 2, 2014 to ITP. I became a foster about 6 years ago and Freddy came to us Nov of 2010. He was suppose to just be with us a short time but once here it chose not to leave. After a year of trying to find him a new home I made him mine. He was a fun loving, ball chasing and frizbee catching boy. He may have been 10 years old but up until this he acted like a brand new puppy. Kasey We are heartbroken to share that our precious Kasey girl lost her battle with nasal cancer on September 20th. Our brave girl was such a trooper through 2 rounds of radiation therapy at NCSU. Through it all, she was always happy and lived life to the fullest. Next to getting treats and snuggling, swimming in the pool or at LKG was her favorite thing! In this picture, she even found a way to “swim” without the pool being open. We love and miss you so much Kasey, but have many happy memories. –Jane and Jim Krom
In Loving Memory of Abby Witcher November 3, 2007 – July 12, 2014
I
n November 2010 we were fortunate to be able to add a wonderful addition to our family, Abby, after working with SEVA GRREAT to find a perfect match for us. Abby was born on November 3, 2007 and was three years old when we adopted her. When we first met her at her foster home we knew that she was the one for us. She quickly jumped into our car when we picked her up to come home with us and fit right into our family. Until I retired at the end of December 2010, Abby would go to work with her “Dad” and loved greeting everyone at work. She loved riding in the car and putting her nose out the window. Once I retired she quickly got to the point where she followed me around the house and always wanted to be in the same room. She preferred to go with me when I went out but was content to stay home and never was a problem with chewing or making a mess. Abby wasn’t a counter surfer but was great at cleaning up the floor if we dropped anything while cooking. Her favorite snack was baby carrots and she loved sharing breakfast with me whether it was yogurt or hard boiled eggs. She liked to mooch but was definitely a lady when it came to eating. She had definitely been trained because she wouldn’t touch her food until we told her it was okay to eat. Then she would quickly finish it up. When she wanted to go out she would sit in the den and face the kitchen until we let her out. If we ignored her, she would let us know with a bark that it was time to go out at night so that she could go to bed. Her bed was pretty much where she wanted to sleep – either in the bathroom, her bed, or many times our bed. However, she wouldn’t get on the bed unless we told her it was okay. So she definitely had “manners.” Abby’s favorite past times were going for walks and chasing the squirrels in the backyard. She would actually watch them through the door and hit the door (which had a broken latch) and run out after them. Of course, we would smack
the door to give them a running start but they did move quite fast and she never caught up except for one unfortunate time when one was hiding in the bushes at the fence. He wasn’t quite so lucky. She was defending her yard and would always bark at the neighbor’s dogs. However, she loved it when our son and his girlfriend brought their 9 year old dog Rex (a Golden) and most recently Cody (a precocious 9 month old Golden) to visit. Rex was also a Golden Retriever and we had loved him since he was a puppy. They tried to compete for attention all the time and wanted to be the “first” to get attention and try to be a lap dog. Abby was very protective whenever someone came to the door barking quite loud. But once the door was opened she would run and get one of her toys and come back expecting whomever was at the door to play with her. She was a lover. She would also come running when we came home with toys in her mouth trying to welcome us but sounding like she was growling and wiggling like a bowl full of jello. So many of us worry about our weight but evidently Abby didn’t. She was a little overweight but still would run in the door and jump on the scale when she went to the vet. Then she would sit and whine and just want to go home. But she always waited patiently for her turn. Another favorite past time of Abby’s was going to the groomer. She knew as soon as she got close where she was going. She couldn’t wait to get in the tub and get her bath. However, she didn’t like the dryer around her ears. So she always came home somewhat damp around the ears but looking beautiful in her fancy scarfs. It always looked like she was smiling because she felt so good. Abby was such a welcome addition to our family and such a love. As so many have learned, Golden Retrievers sometimes have
health problems that can be hereditary or are prevalent in the particular breed. After adopting Abby, we learned that she had what was called Golden Retriever Ichthyosis. We battled with this the entire time we had Abby but it did not diminish our love for her. This past spring we noticed some other things that did not seem right and completed more testing only to discover thyroid problems which eventually were determined to be Cushings. After beginning treatment for Cushings we found a lump which was diagnosed as a lymphoma. We had just completed all tests for the lymphoma and were ready to consult with an oncologist to begin chemotherapy. However, Abby’s health got worse with breathing and we had to see the emergency vet. We had to make one of the hardest decisions ever not to let her suffer any further and she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge the night of July 12, 2014. Our home is too quiet now but for a short time we were so blessed and happy to have Abby with our family. We want to say thank you to so many who loved Abby. First to SEVA GRREAT and their wonderful staff, volunteers, and foster families – thank you for bringing Abby into our lives. To the doctors and staff at Strawbridge Animal Care for their loving devotion and care to Abby – we are forever grateful. To Janice and Nicole Hart for their loving care of Abby whenever we needed a sitter, thank you. To Lori Sabatino and her staff for taking such good care of Abby’s grooming, thank you. To the staff at Bay Beach Veterinary Hospital who took great care of Abby when she was in distress at the end, thank you. To Cherish Pet Cremation Services who took wonderful care of Abby after she passed over the Rainbow Bridge, thank you. To all of our family and friends and any others who encountered Abby and immediately loved her as much as we did, thank you. Abby will forever be a part of our family in our hearts and memories.
