STRIVE FOR DIVERSITY A

ccording to a quick Google search, diversity can mean understanding that everyone is unique and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. This year has led to a myriad of questions around the significance of diversity. How does this apply to landscaping companies? First, the National Association of Landscape Professionals has launched Ryan Whisner (920) 542-1238 rwhisner@acbusinessmedia.com an industrywide discussion on the topic in hopes of proactively encouraging and supporting greater diversity within the industry. Unfortunately, they are facing an uphill battle on many fronts. President Trump signed an executive order in June to limit the entry of immigrants and suspending temporary guest worker programs. The landscape industry is among the largest users of the H-2B visa program, which is a vital component of landscaping’s seasonal business during critical times of the year when manual labor demands expand quickly. The H-2B program plays a role in the diversification of some landscaping companies. It also raises the question of language being a key component to any effort to diversify. The truth is, one of the best investments a company can make

4 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

0720GIP_04-05_Grapevine.indd 4

MAY 2020

is to intentionally seek to increase the diversity in its leadership team through recruitment, retention, and promotion. With no single approach, a diverse leadership team looks at the world through their different cultural lenses which lead the teams to create better solutions. Research has consistently shown that there is a positive correlation between a diverse leadership team and financial performance. A 2015 McKinsey & Company report found: that companies with leadership in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15% more likely to have financial returns above their industry median In addition, the report states that companies with leadership in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity were 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry median. For some, the biggest thing any company can do to promote diversity is by ensuring their leadership team resembles their workforce and customers. Others see diversity in the workplace meaning that a senior management and leadership team can relate, communicate with, and culturally understand its production staff. One step in the process of creating a diverse workforces is to ensure that more people are aware that landscaping is a viable, respectable career option for individuals. It is important to provide a path for growth from within for those entry-level workers looking to move all the way up to senior management. Hiring team members who match your business values and have the key qualities you are looking for is important. What’s more significant is that your decision is not being influenced by the candidate’s sex, race or ethnicity and instead focused on the person’s core values and abilities.

Nokian Tyres Intuitu

Nokian Tyres Intuitu consists of sensor-equipped smart tires and a mobile application. All the machine owner has to do is order the smart tires and download the app to get going. The smart tires are registered in the Intuitu application, which shows the tire position and pressure as well as temperature data for all vehicles with smart tires. Sensors are pre-fitted into the inner surface of the tire and communicate directly with the app, which is available for Android and iOS. The fleet owner can invite as many drivers and vehicles as needed. The real-time data from the app benefits many aspects of professional tire use. The drivers get peace of mind from knowing the tire pressure and temperature, helping to prevent tire damage, reduce tire wear and fuel consumption, increase safety and minimize machine downtime. The fleet owners can use the data for economical tire management. www.greenindustrypros.com/21085468

HALF-TON

PICKUPS Power Efficiently Toward the Future New powertrain technology is expanding the limits of efficiency and performance

T

he three best-selling vehicles in the United States are fullsize pickups: Ford F-Series; Chevrolet Silverado; Ram Truck. This makes dominance of the 1/2-ton pickup truck category a true battleground for the manufacturers. Increased fuel economy ranks near the top of customer demands. Unlike their larger 3/4-ton relatives that are primarily used for towing applications, the half-ton pickups are often used for commuting. This places a greater emphasis on the cost of operation. According to Consumer Reports 2019 Automotive Fuel Economy Survey Report, 88% of American adults agree that automakers should continue to improve fuel economy. Drivers of large SUVs and pickup trucks are almost twice as likely (55%) as drivers of small or mid-size vehicles (30%) to select fuel economy as a desired improvement. Seventy three percent of people driving a large SUV or pickup truck express an interest in

getting a vehicle that is more fuel efficient regardless of their assessments of their current vehicles fuel efficiency. There is a contradiction between the truck manufactures’ efforts to increase fuel economy and the perception by consumers. According to the report, only 34% of Americans agree that automakers care about lowering fuel costs for their customers. The reality is that the competitive landscape demands that full-size pickup truck manufactures address pressures to increase fuel economy. Manufacturers have stepped to the plate with several new product offerings. These include diesel engines, advanced controls for gasoline engines, hybrids, eightand ten-speed transmissions, start/stop technology and more. Even a few years

ago it would have been hard to imagine a full-size pickup achieving 30 mpg. Now there are several options that exceed this mark. The diesel engine is the most significant technology driving these impressive fuel economy gains in the full-size pickup market.

Clean Diesel Technology Conserves Fuel

Diesel engines are typically more efficient and provide more low-end torque than similar-size gasoline engines. Diesel fuel also contains 10 to 15% more energy than gasoline does. These two factors mean a die-

engines often require more costly premium fuel with higher octane ratings. In the past, a downside to the diesel engine was the ‘dirty’ image and coldweather start ability issues. Pre-emission control diesel engines tended to produce black smoke at startup and when pulling heavy loads. And since there is no spark plug, they rely on the heat of compression to ignite the fuel. When it is cold out, this fuel condenses on the cylinder walls, making it more difficult to start. The negative perceptions surrounding the diesel engine still persist, even though the reality is quite different. This may partially be due to the fact that diesel engines typically have long lifespans and many of the older technology diesel trucks are still on the road. Modern diesel engines with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology have cleaned up the tailpipe emissions. More than one truck manufacturer has held a white cloth over the tailpipe of a running diesel to prove that diesel smoke is a relic of

Ford

sel-powered vehicle can travel 25 to 35% further on a gallon of fuel than its gasoline-powered counterpart. Think of a traditional internal combustion engine as a large air pump. The pump that moves the air more efficiently will get the work done with less effort. A higher compression ratio allows the engine to extract more mechanical energy from a certain quantity of fuel. The diesel engine is much more efficient with a higher compression ratio. Diesel engine compression ratios typically range from 14:1 to 25:1 while gasoline engines use lower compression ratios from 8:1 to 12:1 to avoid pre-ignition of the fuel. Higher compression ratios translate into greater thermal efficiencies and better fuel economy. There are trade-offs associated with compression ratios that also have to be taken into account with the gasoline engine. The compression ratio is limited by the octane rating. As the compression ratio increases, so must ○ The Ford F-150 with the 3.0-liter Power the octane rating to prevent pre-igni- Stroke diesel engine is targeted to return an tion. the past. Sophisticated electronic controls and a steady improvement in glow plug technology. have pretty much eliminated cold-weather start ability issues. Just make sure the tank is filled with winter blend fuel so it doesn’t gel when the temperature drops.

Half-ton Pickups Convert to Diesel

Prior to the introduction of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel in 2014, diesel engines were pretty much limited to 3/4-ton and larger pickups. Now all of the three major North American full-size pickup truck manufacturers offer a half-ton pickup with a diesel engine option. The main driver has been to increase fuel mileage without decreasing performance. Ford introduced the 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel F-150 for the 2018 model year. At that time, it led half-ton fuel economy with an EPA-estimate rating of 30 mpg highway, 22 mpg city and 25 mpg combined. This was accomplished without sacrificing capability. The 3.0-liter Power Stroke pumps out 250 hp and, more importantly, 440-lb.ft. of torque. The torque helps the F-150 achieve 11,400 lbs. of towing capability General Motors developed a 3.0L DuraMax turbo-diesel for its 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickup line. It delivers an EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway and 23 city in rear-wheel-drive models. EPAestimated fuel economy for four-wheel drive models is 29 mpg highway/23 city. The company targets performance with 277 hp and 460-lb. ft. of torque in addition to focusing on fuel efficiency. This engine is capable of delivering 95% of peak torque at just 1,250 rpm. It then offers a flat torque curve that sustains peak torque from 1,500 to 3,000 rpm. Ram Trucks is launching the third generation EcoDiesel into its 2020 model year 1500 pickup line. The previous 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel was well accepted, earning “Wards

terparts and have been the mainstay of the half-ton pickup market. Engineers have spent considerable R&D to offer more fuelefficient gasoline engine options for full-size and half-ton pickups. Ford has expanded upon its EcoBoost philosophy to increase the efficiency of the company’s gasoline engines. EcoBoost engines combine turbocharging, direct fuel injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) for power and efficiency. This allows smaller-displacement engines to pump out more power than some larger displacement engines, increasing the overall efficiency. For the 2018 model year, Ford put its second-generation 2.7-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine, mated to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission into its F-150. This resulted in an EPA estimated rating of 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. Despite its small displacement, this engine pumps out 325 hp at 5,000 Gasoline Engine Option rpm and 400 ft.-lb. of torque at 2,750 Focused on Saving Fuel rpm. For customers who need more Diesel engines are not the only options performance out of their gasoline powfor increasing fuel efficiency. Gasoline erplant and still want to maximize fuel engines typically have a lower purchase efficiency, Ford also offers a 3.5-liter price than their EcoBoost and a 3.5-liter diesel high-output EcoBoost. counChevrolet offers five gasoline engine choices as an alternative to its new diesel engine offering. For those seeking to maximize fuel efficiency, there is a 2.7-liter Turbo with Active Fuel Management which pumps General Motors out 310 hp and 348 lb.-ft. of torque. Then there is a 4.3liter EcoTec3 V6 with Active  The 2.7-liter turbocharged gasoline Fuel Management, a 5.3-liter engine with active fuel management EcoTec3 V8 with Dynamic pumps out 310 hp and 348 lb.-ft. of torque. 10 Best Engines: for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016. The third generation EcoDiesel is not a warmed-over version of the previous offering. It is a fresh design with over 80% new components. This includes revolutionary technologies such as a low friction Diamond Like Coating (DLC) on the piston pin and piston side skirts to reduce friction and a 0.3 mm piston pin offset to reduce piston noise caused by piston slap. Piston slap is a major contributor to that classic “diesel sound” many of us have grown accustomed to over the years. The third generation EcoDiesel pumps out a class leading 480 lb. ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm and 260 hp at 3,600 rpm. Compared to the previous generation EcoDiesel, the new powerplant produces 14% more torque and 8% more horsepower. Ram’s half-ton EcoDiesel is rated at 32 mpg highway, 22 mpg city for 4x2 models; 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city for 4x4 models.

 The Ram Truck eTorque mild hybrid system replaces the traditional alternator on the engine with a beltdriven motor generator unit that performs several functions. The motor generator unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to enable quick and seamless start/stop function, shortduration torque addition to the engine crankshaft in certain driving situations and brake energy regeneration, which improves responsiveness and efficiency.

Fuel Management, a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 with Active Fuel Management and a 6.2-liter V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. Active Fuel Management represents traditional approach to engine cylinder deactivation where a set number of cylinders deactivates based on the load and driving conditions. Depending upon the engine configuration, an engine alternates between eight- and four-cylinder modes, six- and three-cylinder modes or four- and two-cylinder modes. General Motors recently rolled out a more advanced cylinder deactivation system called Dynamic Fuel Management. It temporarily shuts off between one and seven cylinders in a variety of different configurations depending upon needs of the customer and the load that the pickup is experiencing. Dynamic Fuel Management works by controlling engine oil flow via special valve lifters on each cylinder that activate or deactivate each cylinder via a software algorithm. The system operates in concert with

the throttle system and provides only the power required, thus dramatically improving efficiency. Ram Truck has taken half-ton pickup gasoline powertrain technology in a new direction - hybridization. But this technology is much different from past hybrid systems from the various manufacturer. eTorque “mild hybrid” systems on the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engines and 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engines first appeared on the 2019 Ram 1500 platform. The eTorque mild hybrid systems replace the traditional alternator on the engine with a belt-driven motor generator unit. The motor generator unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to enable a quick and seamless start/ stop function; short duration torque addition to the engine crankshaft in certain driving situations; and brake energy regeneration, which improves responsiveness and efficiency.

results in a 2 mpg city and 2 mpg combined fuel economy benefit. With the engine running, eTorque’s motor generator unit feeds 48-volt current to a 430-watt-hour lithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt-Graphite battery. The battery pack includes a 3-kW DC-to-DC converter to maintain the battery’s state of charge and convert 48 volts to 12 volts to power the Ram 1500’s accessories and charge its conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery. The V6 and V8 engines with eTorque retain a conventional 12-volt starter motor, used for cold starts and first start of the day due to its greater efficiency in extreme temperatures. In addition to spinning the engine for restarts, the eTorque recaptures energy during deceleration and braking to feed charge to the battery pack. eTorque also enhances the vehicle’s driving experience by adding torque to the crankshaft during gear changes to minimize noise, vibration and harshness. The eTorque motor generator is slightly different between the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V8 applications. The Pentastar eTorque unit is liquid cooled and mounted on the front of the engine. The HEMI V8

Start/stop Improves City Driving Fuel Economy

Stop/start technology helps optimize efficiency in city driving. The engine automatically restarts when the driver takes their foot off the brake. All of the Big Three offer start/ stop technology on their 2019 pickup offerings. These systems are most effective in stop and go traffic. Some of these systems are automatic and some can be switched off at the preference of the driver. For those that don’t like the system, it usually turns on every time the vehicle is started, therefore it must be disabled every time the vehicle is started. Driving a pickup with start/stop for the first time can be a little unnerving as you hear nothing but silence at the stop light and the engine rpms drop to zero. Taking your foot off the brake immediately brings the engine back to life. Ford has made start/stop standard across the F-150 lineup. In its applications, Auto Start-Stop deactivates when it wouldn’t be needed, such as when you’re towing a trailer or running in four-wheel drive.

Multi-speed transmissions hit the sweet spot

Transmissions have been adding gears over the past several years. Most pickup trucks moved to six-speed transmissions. Then Ram Trucks adopted the use of electronic eight-speed transmissions. Most recently, Ford and General Motors worked together to develop a 10-speed gearbox. By having more gear ratios, it is possible to keep an engine near its ideal operating speed most of the time. The transmission’s wider overall ratio enables a lower numerical top gear ratio, an attribute that reduces engine speed on the highway and results in increased fuel economy.

Your Guide to PICKUP TRUCK TRAILER SAFETY

Understanding the basics will help you safely tow equipment with your heavy-duty pickup truck.

T

echnology advances promise to reduce the stress and increase safety when hitching and pulling equipment trailers with your pickup truck. Cameras, radar, integrated trailer brakes and tire pressure monitoring systems are all becoming more popular. Large in-dash screens in current generation pickup trucks provide several camera views which make backing up to and connecting a trailer a one-person operation. It eliminates the guesswork when backing up to the trailer hitch. The camera pointed at the pickup trailer hitch ensures perfect alignment every time. Rear visibility when pulling the trailer down the road or backing into tight spaces can be simplified with trailer-mounted auxiliary cameras. Such devices are currently offered by both Ram Trucks and General Motors.

New Camera Views Reduce Blind Spots

Ram Heavy Duty pickups feature a cargo-view camera to monitor payload in the bed. This camera can also be used to align fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers with grid lines. A 360-degree surround-view camera with trailer reverse guidance view provides a single display-screen view of both sides of a trailer to assist drivers in maneuvering towing setups. An auxiliary exterior camera improves visibility with custom positioning in and behind trailers. There are also cameras in the mirrors and when you are pulling a trailer you can get a split pane view on the 12 in. center console screen that shows each side of the trailer for backing into tight spaces or

next to buildings. Spotter lights in the mirrors allow visibility down the sides of the trailer in low-light conditions. General Motors recently introduced camera technology that provides several unique views. The 2020 Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD offer up to 15 unique camera views, including HD Surround Vision, Bed View, and an industry-first transparent trailer view. The transparent trailer feature uses the tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer. The resultant image allows the driver to virtually see through the trailer, a benefit when navigating parking lots, merging into traffic or when

making a tight turn. Other views, including Rear Side View and Bowl View also enhance the towing experience. Rear Side View shows the rear sides of the vehicle to help allow the driver to view objects near the vehicle. Bowl view provides rear-facing 3D surround view that gives a sense of the height of objects surrounding the vehicle while backing. Backing trailers into tight spaces can prove challenging to some drivers. Ford simplifies this task with Pro Trailer Backup Assist. A knob mounted near the reverse camera allows drivers to easily steer the trailer with hands off the steering wheel. The truck’s Trailer Reverse Guidance system shows trailer angle and direction and provides steering suggestions to direct a trailer backward most efficiently. Both systems are built to accommodate all trailer styles, including fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers.

Collision Avoidance Adapts for Towing

Collision avoidance technologies also help keep drivers safe while towing. For instance, Ford adapted its Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to include the trailer being towed. The BLIS monitors for vehicles in your blind

spots, even when towing. The Ram 3500 dual rear wheel pickup includes specifically designed sensors to cover the added width of dual rear wheels, giving a wider span of coverage when backing up with limited view.

Identify Limitations

Safe towing requires an understanding of trailer and tow vehicle capabilities. Often the weight of equipment to be transported is miscalculated, resulting in overloading the truck and trailer. Each vehicle manufacturer assigns a tow rating, which is the maximum weight of the tow vehicle when loaded. Make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task. The tow vehicle’s hitch rating should meet or exceed the GVWR of the trailer you’re towing. This applies to the receiver hitch itself, as well as the ball mount and ball or pintle hitch assembly. Similarly, the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is printed on a label or placard - often referred to as the certification or VIN label - mounted on the left front side of the trailer, typically within 6 inches of the floor line or near the coupler. The GVWR is the maximum a trailer should ever weigh when loaded.

Transparent trailer view, one of 15 camera views part of the 2020 Silverado HD Advanced Trailering System, optimizes the driver’s view around the truck and compatible trailers to provide added confidence when towing. The transparent trailer feature uses the tailgated-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer. The resultant display allows the driver to virtually see through the trailer, a benefit when navigating parking lots, merging into traffic or when making a tight turn. General Motors

The trailer gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is also listed on the certification label. According to the Trailer Safety Industry Coalition (TISC), this indicates the most weight an axle can bear. If the trailer has more than one axle, each axle will have weight rating information provided on the certification label. The construction of the trailer also deserves close examination. Not all trailers are constructed the same.

Load the Trailer Properly

Weight distribution on a trailer is critical to safe performance. Too much of the load on the front is going to cause the tow vehicle to be unstable and it may cause under-steer or jackknifing. Too much on the back it lifts the rear end of the tow vehicle, which causes trailer instability and swaying. The tow vehicle needs to be level. The front end of the truck should come back down to a level position. The hitch height is critical in ensuring that the trailer tows properly according to Felling Trailers. As a rule, when on a flat, level loading surface, the trailer should be higher in the front than the rear, so that The Ram 3500 dual rear wheel pickup includes specifically when the trailer is designed sensors to cover the added width of dual rear wheels, fully loaded, the giving a wider span of coverage when backing up with limited truck and trailer view. heavy side will likely be exceeded and the trailer will not handle correctly. Even when properly loaded, a trailer will change vehicle dynamics. Any time a trailer is added to the back of a vehicle — no matter the size — there is going to be a significant degradation in the vehicle’s performance, whether it’s acceleration, braking, handling, or stability.

Don’t Skip Pre-trip Inspection

Once a trailer is matched to the load, a pre-trip inspection is in order and should be done prior to taking off with each load. Walk around the trailer and ensure there is no damage or cracks in the unit’s frame. Look for visible damage, such as chafed hydraulic hoses, which could spring a leak and cause the system to fail. Inspect tie-down equipment, such as chains, binders and straps, for broken parts and pieces and make sure they are rated appropriately. These ratings can be found on the equipment being hauled. Also ensure the trailer isn’t leaning or sagging to one side. Check brakes and confirm the tires are properly inflated to the recommended psi. Over- or under-inflated tires won’t have the proper load rating so they won’t carry the weight like they should, which adds stress to the trailer. Traveling with improper tires can also cause a blowout when hauling heavy loads. Drivers can find the psi, size, ply and load rating on the manufacturer’s VIN tag. Improper inflation pressure is the main cause of trailer tire failure. Because they carry greater loads, tire pressure for trailers is higher than the tow vehicle according to TISC. Tires can lose 1 to 3 psi per month. An underinflated tire builds heat faster, leading to quicker degradation. Check the lights. With the vehicle’s headlights on, all the relevant

running lights, turn signals and brake lights should operate properly. Periodically use a torque wrench to check the tightness of trailer wheel lug nuts. Tandem axles don’t steer so the wheels on them are under greater stress when turning corners and likely to becoming lose according to TISC. Every time you come to a stop or every time you get out of your vehicle, walk around the trailer. There are many dynamics and things can come loose. Check the safety chain. Check the coupler. Check to make sure the bolts are good in the hangers - it is fairly easy to see. Check your cargo straps. It needs to be a habit.

Ensure Proper Tires

Trailer tires may be worn out even if they have plenty of tread left. Sitting for extended periods of time or carrying excessive loads shortens tire life. The average life of a trailer tire is about five years under normal use and maintenance conditions according to the Trailer Safety Industry Coalition (TSIC). After three years, consider replacing the trailer tires with new ones, even if the tires have adequate tread depth. The type of tires designates your travel speed. Most trailer tires are a Special Trailer (ST) version. ST tires

don’t have a speed rating like normal passenger car and truck tires. The trailer owner’s manual should tell you the proper speed [at which] those tires can be used.

Properly Secure the Load

Chain and binder selection are critical to secure heavy equipment loads. Chain is not a large investment. If your chain is suspect, replace it. Chain comes in various grades and thickness. The most commonly used chain in securing loads is Grade 70, 3/8 in., which has a 6,600-lb. maximum pull. For heavier loads, there is a Grade 70, 1/2 in. with 11,300 maximum pull. Binders, chains, hooks, and clevis pins all should be permanently marked with their capacity. Ratchet binders have twice the strength of mechanical lever binders, and they are also much easier to tighten than the lever binders. Whether its chains, ropes, wraps or webbing, whatever secures the load must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations regarding the Aggregate Working Load Limit. The basic requirement is that tiedowns must have the combined strength equal to at least 50 percent of the load being secured.

The way to calculate the aggregate load limit is to add 50 percent of the working load limit of each tiedown used to secure the load; and if the total is greater than 50 percent of the load being carried, it is secured within the limit requirements. For example, assume that a trailer is being loaded with an 11,000-lb. telehandler, which will be held with four Grade 70, 3/8-in. chains. Since each chain is rated at 6,600 maximum pull, the aggregate working load limit is 6,600 lbs. divided by two. The total of the four chains added together is 13,200 lbs.

Before Leaving the Yard

Never leave a job site or equipment yard without ensuring that the trailer’s electrical cable is properly connected and all exterior lights and the electric brakes are working. There are also several different types of brake controllers. They are all compatible with the trailer brake. But some are solid state, where you manually adjust the gain. It is always important to pay attention to that. Sometimes, a driver towing a heavy load will turn up the gain. Once the load is delivered and the driver prepares to leave, he taps the brakes and the trailer locks up, so he turns the gain down. When he returns for another load, he forgets to turn the gain back up. Then the driver doesn’t necessarily have enough brakes. Adjusting the brakes is known as synchronization. You need to synchronize your brakes every time you use them.

ith unemployment rates reaching almost 10% a decade ago, it wasn’t that tough to get employees to work in the lawn care industry. Fast forward 10 years to pre-pandemic unemployment rates cut in thirds and staying steady at around 3.5% and many companies in the green industry struggling to keep fully staffed with competent employees. One Kansas City-based company has figured out the secret sauce for maintaining a full staff of high-quality employees. Larry Ryan has taken his company, Ryan Lawn & Tree, from a one-man shop operating out of his home garage to a $40 million company with five locations. As the company’s president, Ryan said he has always thought outside the box when it comes to staffing. He has worked to create a company for the employees – and they have responded.

Lessons from a restaurant background

Ryan gives credit for his staffing to his 10 years in the restaurant business. There he learned that in hiring, you hire the right person, not any person. “Better people attract better people,” Ryan said. “It’s a Catch-22 in the right direction.” What did restaurants have to do with hiring? “If you think you have employee problems, go into the restaurant business,” Ryan said. “Thirty years ago, my bosses told me how much I could pay employees, then didn’t understand why no one was interested in the job. I vowed that if I ever was in a position to set pay and write job postings, I would work to be a different kind of company. That opportunity came in March of 1987. I had lost my restau-

One of the ways Ryan Lawn & Tree has achieved success is through consistent branding — from the red truck with a standout logo to the associates who work in button-down or polo shirts with logo and khaki pants, RYAN has made true on their slogan “the pros you know in the clean red truck.”

Nutt said from an income tax perspective, there are also company benefits. “We are an S-Corporation,” he said. “Paired with being 100% ESOP owned, Ryan Lawn & Tree basically isn’t required to pay federal or state income taxes.” From his perspective, Green said employee ownership reduces turnover and provides a way to save for retirement. “Ownership is a big deal to me,” Green said. “As the stock price goes up, it is easy to see the value in growth and why it is so important. Not only growing new clients and services but also to watch spending and cut expenses. This helps everyone hold each other accountable for our actions.”

Providing full-time, year-round employment

As an employer, Larry Ryan always felt he had a social responsibility to his employees and their families to provide full-time employment. “How can a person feel good about employees working nine months a year and living on unemployment for the other three months?” Ryan said. “How does a person raise a family with seasonal work?” At Ryan Lawn & Tree, all employees are all full time and have full benefits. It sometimes puts a financial burden on the company, but the pay is spread over the full twelve months. “RYAN’s goal from day one in 1998 has been to make career full-time posi-

tions in the green industry,” Nutt said. “Owners must be willing to accept this model versus seasonal and parttime employees. The owner is willing to share the ownership and profitability with the employees — willing to fund a retirement plan. This is a short-term cost, but we have found it to be a long-term benefit. We want to raise the entire green industry.” For now, Ryan is satisfied running his five locations in Kansas City, Springfield, St. Louis, Tulsa and Wichita and always being on the lookout for continued growth through acquisitions. “It is hard to find companies that share similar values,” Ryan said. “But we are looking again at acquisitions and are working on a plan where we would give the acquired company a number of years to grow into the RYAN culture.” That culture and commitment to shared values — the RYAN Way — have proven to be the secret to successful recruitment and retention for Ryan Lawn & Tree even with the lowest unemployment rates and Ryan hopes other green industry companies consider the same. “It’s simple. Do more for the customer, provide a greater-valued service to earn a higher price. Then, pay your people more,” Ryan said. “When you pay more, you get a better-quality employee. Now, it may not be in that order. At Ryan Lawn & Tree, we got the better employee first, did more, then charged more. If other businesses started really caring about quality, they’ll end up raising their prices too. In turn, we’ll hear fewer complaints from customers about how we cost too much. The cost will be the new industry standard and the quality of services will be higher. It’s a win-win.” For more information about the ideas in this article, Larry Ryan has offered to respond to emails at larryryan@ryanlawn.com. ›

Google My Business How to Use

to Get More Customers The secret to great local SEO

I

’ve covered how important Google My Business (GMB) is before, but in this two-part article we’re going to look at how you can use this free marketing tool from Google to get new customers through your door. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to Google My Business is simply not claiming their listings. Google My Business is an incredibly useful tool and can increase your local SEO significantly, if used correctly. Having a Google My Business (GMB) account is an essential step in improving your company’s online marketing. If you don’t have a Google My Business listing set up for your company, then you’re losing out on a lot of potential clients, simply due to how people search for services. Google My Business is a fantastic way to get your business seen by people searching for your services in their area. An optimized listing will push your company closer to the top of the search engine results page (SERP) and promote you to potential customers. In the first part of this article, we’re going to cover how to claim your profile and the initial optimization techniques to get you ranking. In the second part, we’re going to look at posts, followers, questions & answers, messaging, bookings, and reviews. If you haven’t created a GMB listing yet, now’s the time to do it. Sometimes Google will automatically create a basic listing for companies, so the easiest way to find out if you have one is to search your company’s name on Google. If a listing appears on the right-hand side of your screen, then you just need to claim it.

Alternatively, you can look up your business on Google Maps to see if it appears as a marker. Appearing on Google Maps (with prewritten directions) is one of the great benefits of having a listing with GMB. If your business has a GMB listing, then all you must do is verify you own it. The most common way to verify your listing is by receiving your verification number over the phone or by postcard. Once your listing is verified, you’ll be able to edit and optimize your listing to get it promoted above your competitors. If no listing exists under your company’s name, that’s no problem.

You just need to go to Google My Business and create your own listing. Once you verify your business, you’re free to customize the listing however you want. However, if you find the listing for your business has already been verified, don’t panic. While it may be disheartening toe see your business listing being operated by someone else, it’s not difficult to reclaim as your own. All you need to do is fill out this request ownership form. You’ll receive an email telling you your request was received and will be answered within 7 days. If your request is rejected and another person still has your business listing, the best thing to do is to appeal the rejection. Scroll to the bottom of the email you received detailing the rejection and click on ‘Appeal’. This will lead you through the steps necessary to verify the listing and take it back. This will usually involve verification by phone or postcard but depending on the circumstances, they may ask for more information.

Optimize your Google My Business listing & get more customers

To get the most out of Google My Business you’ll need to optimize your profile and make it more appealing for your audience – and for the search engines. When I start working with new clients to boost their online reputation and upgrade their online presence, I always check their GMB listing and make sure the following features are optimized:

Business name When it comes to the ‘business name’ field on GMB you need to write down your company name and nothing else. Write down exactly what is on

your business cards or on the sign above your office. Do not try to stuff your GMB business name with keywords or irrelevant information. Adding your location or other keywords will be classified as spam and it could get you in trouble with Google. This is a common issue in our industry and doesn’t do anyone any favors. It also looks incredibly untrustworthy to potential customers that are looking to hire you. You don’t want all your hard work to get your listing going to waste!

Business categories

Your primary category tells your audience the main service you offer. It’s also the category that will be published publicly so choose it carefully as it’ll impact your local ranking for different search phrases. You can add secondary categories too so be sure to add all the categories that are relevant to your business. Category options are regularly updated so check them out in case there are new ones added that suit your business and can help more customers find you.

Location, location, location

There are two things you need to take into consideration when it comes to choosing your Google My Business address. • Physical location of your business • Area you serve If customers can visit your offices, store, or showroom, then putting your physical location on your GMB listing is vital. You should also make sure that your location on Google Maps is correct and matches the written address you have down. If customers typically don’t visit you in person, you need to provide them with a general area you serve.

Hours of operation

There are two types of opening hours to fill in: regular business hours and special hours. Add all your regular business hours to your listing and make sure they’re correct. Remember to update this if your hours change in the future – or you might end up losing a lead as a result. You can use the ‘Special Hours’ feature on Google My Business to include bank holidays, special events, and vacation days etc.

Phone numbers Add any active phone numbers to your listing. Many good companies lose out on inquiries simply because they either don’t list a phone number or worse, they have an old, disconnected number listed.

Short name

It’s the short name and URL for your profile that makes your business listing a lot easier to find by users. • Short name can be up to 32 characters • Can be changed three times a year • Adds some personality to a listing.

Link to your website To get the most out of your listing, you should always link to your website. The benefits are two-fold: • People searching for your services will get the full sales pitch and appreciate everything you do once they visit your website. • Your website will do better on Google’s search results. It’s a win-win situation.

Services

Update your Google My Business listing with the services you provide. Outline your most popular products whether its mowing, trimming,

BEYOND THE BLADE

tree care, snow, and ice removal. Sell what you do and give them the answers they need so they’ll call you for a solution. You want those casual Google visitors to get an understanding of what you do before they even engage with you.

Company description

Your company description on GMB does not have an impact on your search engine ranking. This means that you shouldn’t stuff it full of keywords and locations because it’s not going to help you rank over competitors. You have 750 characters to write a description of your business and you should use it to show your potential customers why they should pick you. Tell them why you’re better than everyone else and what you have to

offer. You want to entice them in – show off your company’s personality. A word of advice on the description, don’t use all caps.

Add photos Adding photos to your Google My Business listing is incredibly important as it shows you as the authentic and professional company you are. You should make sure your photos are clear, high-quality pictures (not blurry/out of focus). Photos to add to your listing include: • Logo and great cover image • Photos of your team • Storefront (if applicable) • Office • Awards or award presentations • Anything that will show off your business/services/products Your business is always changing and whether that’s your opening times,

your product info or even what your offices look like, it is highly important to keep all your information up to date on your Google My Business so your customers can stay informed. People don’t like to spend their time searching through pages and pages of search results for what they want. When your optimized GMB listing pops up the minute they hit that ‘search’ button, they are going to contact you over anyone else. In the next part of this article, we will look at how to use GMB to actively promote your business and take online bookings. We’ll cover posts, followers, questions & answers, messaging, bookings, and reviews, so stay tuned! I hope you enjoyed this guide to Google My Business. NALP Takes a Stance on H-2B Program Suspension The National Association of Landscape Professionals is urging the Trump administration to reinstate the H-2B visa program. On Monday, June 22, the president signed an executive order to further limit the entry of immigrants into the United States. The order extended and expanded the scope of an previous order issued on April 22 which suspended entry of immigrants into the U.S. Under the latest version, the order also suspends temporary guest worker programs, such as H-1B, H-2B, H-4 , L-1 and some J-1 visas, until the end of 2020. The landscape industry is among the

largest users of the H-2B visa program, which is a vital component of landscaping’s seasonal business during critical times of the year when manual labor demands expand quickly. Both the National Association of Landscape Professionals and Irrigation Association are among business groups expressing ire at the administration’s actions relating specifically to the suspension of the H-2B visa program. “We were working really closely with those that have influence in the White House to exempt H-2B from any temporary

suspension,” says Andrew Bray, VP of government relations for NALP. “We, unfortunately, lost that battle. So now we will continue to work with our friends in the administration and Congress to urge change and ensure minimal impacts on the 2021 landscape season.” Additionally, NALP officials continues outreach with the administration to encourage the order be rescinded. The effects of the proclamation may not be immediately felt as the issuance of work visas had already dramatically declined due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will be in effect until December 31, 2020.

Kentucky Exposition Center Improvement Project Enhances GIE+EXPO Demo Area The Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) has an improvement project underway that will positively impact GIE+EXPO. Lot C, which becomes GIE+EXPO's 20-acre Outdoor Demonstration Area each year in October, is undergoing a $1.3 million overhaul, that will enhance the space's function for GIE+EXPO and many other events in the future. The project is expected to be complete by the end of July. Watch live progress at https://www.gie-expo.com/events/ featured-areas/outdoordemoarea. More than 126,000 cubic yards of dirt, the equivalent of 63 football fields (or over 1 million wheelbarrows full), is being relocated to Lot C and steps are being taken to improve drainage and irrigation. Once the green space is complete, the new irrigation systems will provide the ability to cover the entire field with an inch of rainwater in two days. In addition, permanent driving lanes will be added to Lot C, as well as sidewalks that extend from Phillips Lane, where several

hotels are located, to a new main gate, improving pedestrian access. According to Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and OPEI president, the opportunity for attendees to get behind the controls and test equipment in a demo area that is right outside the exhibit hall makes GIE+EXPO a one-of-a-kind event. "We've called Louisville home for 38 years and have always enjoyed a strong partnership with the city and state of Kentucky," he said. "The renovations at the Kentucky Expo Center are really a big 'backyard renovation' for GIE+EXPO and the industry. These 20 acres of outdoor demonstration area are a purposeful, living landscape that our attendees and exhibitors use each fall to showcase and try out the latest equipment and technologies. " Project leaders at KEC have sought input

from GIE+EXPO organizers throughout the project. "We have a great working relationship with KEC and have been pleased with their collaborative approach as they undertake major projects," said Warren Sellers, show director. "With the current renovations wrapping up in July, we'll certainly see a difference in the demo area this October and anticipate even bigger improvements by 2021."

During a recent site visit, GIE+EXPO show director Warren Sellers reviewed progress on the improvement project that will enhance the Outdoor Demonstration Area with Kevin Moore, general manager of the Kentucky Exposition Center, and Kevin McCoy, executive director of facility planning and management.
