GRAAFF-REINET: “The problem with the people of Riemvasmaak,” resident Dawid Hart says, “is that nobody sees us. It is like we are not here.” For the past six or seven years, since he moved his family to the informal settlement outside Graaff-Reinet, mere survival has been a challenge. Two devastating fires have claimed the lives of three people and in July last year, two boys who were trying to retrieve a kite from an electricity line almost lost their lives. Since then, the families have tried to help the boys carry on with their lives as they battle severe injuries, but the electricity line, running over an open field, still remains where it was. It is this spot, the spot “where the boys burnt”, that residents of Riemvasmaak point out quickly. The electricity cables run past their homes but have never been connected. “We borrow electricity from those who have. We pay them R400 or R300 to use theirs,” Dawid says. Jakob Alexander has been living in Riemvasmaak for the past seven years. He doesn’t have a job. His wife died a few years ago and he is raising his son alone. On 25 July 2020 his son, Brandon Karelse (15), and other children were playing with a kite in an open field near their home. “The kite got stuck on the electricity line. There was a tire there that had been burnt. Brandon took the wire from the tire and tried to unhook it from the line. The children called me to say that Brandon [had been] burnt by the electricity cable. I ran. ‘PotjiePotjie!’ I shouted. That is my name for him. The bones on his hand were sticking out. I wanted to grab him but the people who were standing there said I must not touch him. “The ambulance came and they took him to the hospital. That same evening, they took him to Dora Nginza Hospital. He had burn wounds everywhere. Even his stomach was burnt. There was a hole in his shoulder where the current came through.” For two months Jakob could not see his child, because Covid-19 regulations prohibited him from visiting. Brandon lost part of his arm. Eskom has issued several warnings in the past about playing with kites under high-voltage lines. “But where must the children go? That is the only place they have,” Jakob says. “Brandon is back in school now. He had to learn how to write with his other hand. He gets scared if he… (continue on page 6)

…even sees a kite. We are getting a grant for him. I take him to the hospital for his checkups when the nurses say we must come.” Brandon’s friend Richard Visagie (12) sustained critical burn wounds when he rushed to help his friend. “Our power went off,” says Richard’s mom, Veruschka Visagie. The family lives in Geluksdal, a housing development across the road from Riemvasmaak. “We [had just come] back from the farm. The children called me and I just saw him lying there. People were screaming at me not to touch him. I could just watch,” she says. She cries at the memory of that day. “I saw there was spit coming out of his mouth. He was just lying there. When the ambulance came, they said his heart was still beating. He was unconscious for a while. When he woke up, he first recognized his dad. It took him a while to realize who I was. “He had burns on his hands, his head, his back, his legs, and his foot,” she adds. “We [got] a huge fright that day. “He never speaks about what happened on that day. I must take him back to the clinic tomorrow,” she says. She (from page 4)

says Richard went back to school this year and he was “getting along”. But Dawid adds that it is not only the kite incident that makes them fear for their children. Because their community is not connected to the grid, people are running illegal connections underground to their homes. “Every election someone will come here promising us electricity,” says Dawid. “But now they want us to pay R7,000 for an electric box. This is what poverty looks like… People here – 10 or 12 of them use one electricity box. It is too much. But what can you do? “Exposed cables will get wet when it rains and if a child steps on them, it will be ugly,” Dawid says. “We fear for our children.” At the end of April, Miemie Bantom (81) burnt to death in her shack. “We think that it might have been a lamp or a candle, as she didn’t have any electricity,” community leader Sias Smith says. “If she had electricity this might never have happened.” Neither Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality nor Eskom responded to a request for comment. ’Kontreikos Kokke’ celebrates cooks in small town cooking contests

WILLOWMORE: SABC2 will celebrate ordinary home cooks in the new show “Kontreikos Kokke”, which made its debut on 06 July 2021, at 7pm. Hosting the show is popular TV personality Lynette Francis-Puren, who is well-known for her hard-hitting interviewing skills on SABC 2’s current affairs show “Fokus” as well as “Praat Saam”. Taking up her role on “Kontreikos Kokke”, FrancisPuren will have the opportunity to engage with audiences in a more relaxed informal manner, as she visits small-town South Africa. On the 12th of June 2021 she and her production team, Red Sugar Productions, visited the town Willowmore and they took to Facebook while on the location: “Early morning in Willowmore to shoot our link. In Willowmore the local chefs are going to prepare Roly-Poly with homemade-custard.” According to the locals they were informed that the specific episode will be aired on 06 July 2021.

GRAAFF-REINET: On Friday afternoon, 11 June, Union’s learner leaders were among 44 learners from GraaffReinet’s secondary schools who attended the town’s firstever Youth Leaders’ Summit. The event, which was held at the Profcon Resort, was a Prescient Foundation SCI project, organized by Mrs. Hestie Clegg. Through the course of the afternoon, Mr. Igno van Niekerk, an acclaimed author, and facilitator on leadership principles introduced the learners to various qualities and challenges of leadership. The process started with the learners having to trust their inner genius and learning 10 principles from the book, The

Power of Focus by Jack Canfield without taking notes but by using their bodies, stories, imagination, and other faculties. Having learned about the incredible power of holistic learning which all leaders need to develop; the learners were challenged to consider what difference they are able to make in their current reality. This was done by using FotoFunatix coaching picture cards designed by van Niekerk. Although social distancing was maintained, and Covid-19 protocols were adhered to, learners were able to connect and brainstorm with leaders from other schools. After several brainstorming conversations, the learners… (continue on page 10)

The process of simplification became a real challenge as learners attempted to complete a tricky 4-piece puzzle in less than 5 minutes. Once the learners understood the power of simplicity, they revisited their brainstorming ideas and challenges. The picture coaching cards were used once again, this time to address challenges, and learners discovered how powerful pictures are in stretching our thinking. The (from

session was concluded when learners were allowed to experience the importance of energy as illustrated by a UFO ball. Great leaders create energy through their vision, actions, and presence. After the session learners commented that they would like to become more involved in the community, contribute and make a difference. The vision is that an annual seminar will be held for school leaders and that it will result in young leaders generating more ideas and making a positive impact in the community. Union is very grateful to the Prescient Foundation for this very valuable opportunity afforded to our young leaders.

Do you know who your local ward councillor is? It’s important for all South Africans to know their ward councillor because they are the link between the municipality and the community they serve. People can also take their problems to the ward councillor and he/she should deal with these in an appropriate way What is a local councillor? A local councillor is a person who provides political leadership in a ward of a municipality. It can be a metropolitan municipality, district municipality or local municipality. En vier sommer soms so by jouself nagmaal as jy brood eet. Sommer so by jouself, of saam met jou gesin. Dalk sommer ook as jy en 'n vriend tydens etenstyd 'n broodjie nuttig. Wat 'n eenvoudige maaltyd is 'n toebroodjie nie, en hoe eenvoudig is die evangelie ook nie, selfs 'n kind kan dit verstaan. Neem daardie Brood wat lewe gee en maak Hom jou eie. Dis elke dag vars. Geniet dit. ~ Willem Botha

Overlooked & Under-appreciated! Oh boy, the large bakkie-based segment in South Africa is a tough market to play in. The Toyota Fortuner rules the roost while the likes of the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport all desperately cling onto the coattails of the Fortuner’s success. Take nothing away from the Toyota, it is a very accomplished product which dazzles consumers with its storied badge and an expansive footprint across the country. But I suspect that the light gleams too brightly as many are blinded to the breadths of talent in the rest of the segment. Take the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for example. It undercuts both the Toyota and Ford by more than R100 000 in their most expensive specification; is not found wanting in any particular area and comes from a manufacturer that arguably has an equally impressive reputation for reliability and trustworthiness. I unfortunately can’t account for consumers’ shopping behaviours so don’t expect any solid answers as to why we are a stubborn, single-minded bunch. But what I can tell you is why I think the updated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a cut above of the rest and at the very least, worth a visit to the showroom. Mitsubishi South Africa introduced the refreshed Pajero Sport late last year with the introduction of the range-topping Exceed model as well. You’ll notice the new face which Mitsubishi calls their ‘Dynamic Shield’ design, which brings into line with the stablemates like the Triton, Eclipse Cross and ASX. At the rear, the tweaked tail lights have been shortened and feature a new LED signature. Handsome looks aside, the updated Pajero Sport also offers a raft of interior updates. Although the design and layout remain the same, you now get an updated eight-inch touchscreen which supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone air-conditioning including rear passenger controls, plus a leather-clad multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth and voice control. On the safety front, each of the Pajero Sport’s 7 passengers are catered for in terms of an airbag. Our range-topping Exceed 4×4 test unit also features a

sliding sunroof, Mitsubishi Remote Control connectivity, and an electronic tailgate with kick sensors. So, you’re certainly not lacking in terms of tech, style and amenities but one area where the Pajero Sport does fall slightly short is in the drivetrain department. You only have one option for both the engine and gearbox to choose from which is a 2.4l MIVEC turbo diesel engine, producing 133kW and 430Nm and linked to an eightspeed automatic transmission. And while it does a sufficient job of lugging about its large frame, there were instances where power waned and it struggled to keep up with the flow of traffic. But the majority of the time, accelerating and cruising at the national speed limit was a breeze and overall noise, vibration and harshness was low. Mitsubishi claims an average fuel consumption of 8.1l/100 although I managed around the 8.7l/100 which is quite respectable. While I never had the opportunity to take our test unit off the beaten track, I do have experience with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system and I can assure you that you will find very few obstacles in your path. For the average family, the Pajero Sport possesses more than enough capabilities to meet your families adventures and sum. With pricing ranging from R624 995 for the base 4×2 model and extending all the way to R704 995 for the top of the range Exceed model, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport makes a compelling case for itself. For similar outlay, you can get into a Toyota Fortuner equipped with the updated 2.8-litre engine, however, you only get that model in 4×2 guise and an additional R70 000 is needed to hop into the base 4×4 variant with that engine. So the updated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is truly the smart money in this segment, and it’s worth noting that it recently claimed the title of best large SUV/Crossover in CAR Magazine’s annual Top 12 Best Buys. Need I say more? Just go and visit one of their dealerships so you can see for yourself.
