ANNUAL REPORT message from the Foundation Board

Table of Contents

In April 2022, the Galveston College Foundation Board approved an increase in the lifetime maximum per Universal Access scholar to $6,264. The ability to approve such an amount reflects over 20 years of fundraising efforts and the corresponding generous response from the Galveston community, plus strong fiduciary duty of Foundation leadership. I am proud to lead today’s GC Foundation Board of Directors and carry forward the important mission of the Galveston College Foundation.

Universal Access (UA) was established in 2001 in an effort to secure fully paid tuition for public and private local high school graduates who wished to attend Galveston College. Today, UA Scholarships are provided to ensure that every eligible high school graduate, or equivalent, who resides in the Galveston College taxing district, has the opportunity to attend college, receive an associate degree, or acquire technical training through a workforce development program and obtain a certificate.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Galveston College Foundation granted 236 Universal Access Scholarships and Universal Access Plus Scholarships. In addition, 134 named and endowed scholarships were awarded. In total, the Galveston College Foundation distributed $289,128 in scholarships to students. This represents a 19.4% increase over the prior academic year. There is no intent of stagnation.

Scholarships assure greater financial accessibility to higher education. Accessibility remains at the forefront of the Galveston College Foundation’s work each and every day. Generous donors and funders have made possible the Foundation’s current capacity for scholarship awards.

I invite you to read through this 2022 Annual Report to learn how the support of donors and funders like you have changed lives. We thank you for your generous investment in Galveston College students.

message from Galveston College

Karen Flowers, Chair, Galveston College Board of Regents

W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D., President, Galveston College

Galveston College wrapped up its 2017-2022 strategic plan, Opening Doors, Changing Lives in December 2022. Over five years, the plan directed the College’s course of intentional evolution that prepared us for today. The new Health Sciences Education Center currently being constructed on the main campus is just one example of the result of the plan. Another is the historic addition of two baccalaureate programs: Healthcare Management and Nursing. These accomplishments are significant and will have a lasting impact on Galveston College students and the region into the future.

Now we embark on our next strategic plan (2023-2027), Building Tomorrows. The mission and purpose of Galveston College remains constant. The strategic plan created for the next half decade will guide us forward, helping us not only maintain the standards and achievements of today, but help us grow to meet the world of tomorrow.

The partnership between Galveston College and the Galveston College Foundation is important to a number of new strategic initiatives. In accordance, the two entities will work together to increase financial support for students to improve their access to higher education through a continuing commitment to Universal Access, Universal Access Plus and student scholarship programs.

As you read this Annual Report, you will see the faces of just a few of the students who have received Galveston College Foundation scholarships and learn about the stories of generous donors and funders who have invested in the future of Galveston College students through their contributions and grants.

It is through the support of many individuals that Galveston College, an innovative public post-secondary institution dedicated to student success, teaching and learning, creates accessible learning opportunities to fulfill individual and community needs by providing high-quality educational programs and services.

On behalf of the Galveston College Board of Regents, and the Galveston College Administration, we thank you – GCF supporters – for helping improve access to higher education for our students.

about the Galveston College Foundation

A Brief History

Since its founding, it has helped more than 2,000 students attain their dream of attending college.

The Galveston College Foundation holds assets of over $22 million, largely restricted in areas of the performance-based Universal Access Community Endowment Scholarship (UA) and Non-Tuition Educational Expenses Fund (aka UA Plus).

The Foundation also manages other named scholarships, special project funds and a Title V Endowment.

Universal Access Community Endowment Scholarship

The Galveston College Foundation is an independent 501 (c)(3) established to support Galveston College through fundraising. Our mission is to support Galveston high school graduates through an earned scholarship program as they strive to obtain their first two years of college debt-free regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The Foundation oversees two major scholarship programs, the Universal Access Community Endowment Scholarship (UA) and Universal Access Plus (UA+.)

The UA scholarship ensures the groundwork of a career through an associate degree, certificate, or transfer for a four-year baccalaureate program. UA+ builds on that success by helping to meet rising education costs outside of tuition and fees. Today, the Foundation can fully fund the $6,264 in tuition and fees associated with a Galveston College associate degree through the UA scholarship program.

The goal of UA+ is to increase access to post-secondary education and students access to textbooks, digital technology, and program equipment while reducing their overall student debt. The fund addresses the barriers to accessing education caused by the high cost of textbooks, e-books and digital needs. Eligible UA students received UA+ awards of $35 per semester hour to a maximum of $2,100. This can be used at the campus bookstore or through receipts for GC class-related expenses.

John H. Clyburn Endowed Scholarship Fund

John H. Clyburn moved to Galveston, Texas in 1971 to take a position at Galveston Community College where he served in various teaching and administrative roles, including a four-year stint as dean. After moving to Galveston, John met his future wife Carolyn, a native islander and widow, with two young girls, Edie and Julie. John was an extremely devoted father and together with the girls, he and Carolyn formed a new family union filled with love, laughter, car trips, basset hounds and the occasional turtle. John and Carolyn were active, civic-minded members of the Galveston community, giving their time and resources to scores of causes including the Rotary Club, Galveston Historical Foundation and Trinity Episcopal School.

John was a gentle, humble and honorable man devoted to his family, friends and students. He was a gentleman and a scholar in the truest sense. Those who knew John would describe him as selfless; he always put the needs of others before his own. Even at Christmas or birthdays, he was almost embarrassed to receive gifts, but he delighted in seeing others receive them. While reluctant to talk about himself, John was fascinated by the stories, experiences and interests of others. John was an extraordinary listener to both young and old; when you had a conversation with him you felt as if you were the only person in the room. This unique ability to communicate combined with a passion for learning made John highly effective as a teacher and immensely popular with students and faculty alike.

Mr. Clyburn passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

The thousands of students he taught over the years are richer for having experienced John’s wisdom, knowledge and compassion. In the months before his passing, he and his wife Carolyn contacted the Galveston College Foundation to create a scholarship fund to benefit Galveston College students. Sadly, John passed away before the scholarship fund was established. But Mrs. Clyburn, family and friends memorialized him by fully endowing The John H. Clyburn Scholarship Fund in October 2022. John will be dearly missed by his family, friends and the many he touched during his career and through his service to the community. John’s legacy will now live on through scholarships awarded to students enrolled in a Galveston College degree program of study in nursing, health sciences or history.

Carroll G. Sunseri Memorialized with Named Scholarship Fund

The Carroll G. Sunseri Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Sunseri’s family and friends in 2022. Elected in 1990, Mr. Sunseri was the longest-serving member of the Galveston College Board of Regents, dedicating 32 years to his position.

“Mr. Sunseri was a good friend who dedicated more than 30 years of his life to helping Galveston College,” said Dr. Myles Shelton, Galveston College President. “His contributions were meaningful, enduring and helped bring the College to where it is today.”

Mr. Sunseri, who started at Moody Bank and later joined Citizens Bank and Trust in Baytown, retired from banking in 2002 and later received his Texas Real Estate license in order to help students and local families find local housing.

Sunseri was a 1961 graduate of the University of Texas, a charter member of the Longhorn Foundation, as well as a life member of the school’s alumni association. He served in the U.S. Army for two years where he was in the reserves and received an honorable discharge in August 1967 at the rank of staff sergeant. He also was a 1967 graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

“We lost a true gentleman and a real asset to Galveston College,” said Karen Flowers, chairwoman of the Galveston Community College District Board of Regents. “I lost a true friend and mentor. He will be missed tremendously.”

In creating the scholarship, the Sunseri family sought to reflect Mr. Sunseri’s forward-thinking commitment to Galveston students in its criteria. The scholarship supports non-tuition needs including, but not limited to, childcare, transportation, parking, equipment, uniforms, books and licensure exam fees. All students, part-time or full-time, who are U.S. citizens or resident aliens are eligible. The student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Five Fabulous Chefs

After a hiatus of a few years, Galveston College teamed up with five of Galveston Island’s finest chefs to host the 2022 Five Fabulous Chefs culinary celebration event.

The culinary celebration, held on Sept. 13 and 14 at the Galveston College main campus atrium, featured five of Galveston’s top chefs, including Chef Mary Bass from La Cocina and Good Dough Bakery, Chef Justin Bowen from the Grand Galvez, Chef Juan Cardona from the Galveston Restaurant Group, Chef Grant Marion of the Tremont House and Chef Megan Walker from the Saltwater Grill.

“I’m excited to have participated in the Five Fabulous Chefs this year, it was my first event at Galveston College since I graduated in 2004,” said La Cocina owner and Galveston College alumna, Chef Bass. “We prepared a meal to remember. Each of the five chefs prepared one of the five courses for the dinner.”

Proceeds from the Five Fabulous Chefs event benefited Galveston College’s Building Tomorrow capital campaign for the new three-story Health Sciences Education Center under construction at the college’s main campus.

If you are interested in learning more about the Building Tomorrow capital campaign or the new Health Sciences Education Center, contact Kelly Kennedy at kkennedy@gc.edu or 409-944-1303.

Donor Wall Honors Named and Endowed Scholarships

When you walk through Moody Hall, pass down the hallway, right before you reach the Library, you will see a new addition mounted on the wall. This past year the Galveston College Foundation had a named and endowed scholarship recognition wall installed.

“Since the Galveston College Foundation was founded in 1996, over 60 named and endowed scholarships have been created by generous donors and supporters,” said Kelly Kennedy, Director of Development and the Galveston College Foundation. “This wall recognizes the people who have invested in our Galveston College students over the years. The plaques name the area of study the respective scholarship supports and whether or not the scholarship was created in someone’s honor or memory.”

“The Named and Endowed Scholarship Wall is about community. The power of community. The impact of community. When you visit campus, we encourage you to look at the plaques. It writes a history of who has made Galveston College the institution it is today,” added Kennedy. “It emphasizes the importance and value of education. The individuals, families, groups of friends, faculty and foundations who have created these scholarships believe in the power of education. It is meant to inspire you as you walk by it. Students should know people believe in them. Other people – those who may never meet a student - believe in helping students get their degrees and certificates. Education changes lives.”

The wall was placed with room for expansion and as time moves forward the plan is to extend it. In 2022, five new named or endowed scholarships were established.

If you are interested in learning more about named and endowed scholarships, contact Kelly Kennedy at kkennedy@ gc.edu or 409-944-1303.

Student Success Stories

Chelsey Hill

I am truly honored to have been selected as a recipient of the John Parker Davie Trust Scholarship for the academic year of 2022-2023 for the amount of $800. Thank you so much for your generosity, not only for myself, but for all the students you help. I want to show gratitude to everyone involved in making it possible for me to continue my education. Receiving this scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies, rather than focusing on finances for tuition and other costs pertaining to school.

I am a first-generation college student, as well as the first person in my family to get a high school diploma. As I continue my studies at Galveston College, I will be eternally thankful for this gift. As of now, I am a Biology major at Galveston College. I am also the president of our STEM Honors Student Organization and an active volunteer in our community at Seeding Galveston. I will be transferring in fall 2023 to finish my bachelor degree in Environmental Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I aspire to be a Natural Resource Manager and Wildlife Conservationist in our National Parks Services.

I, again, would like to thank donors for the scholarship for helping pave the path to make many students dreams come true.

Byron Smith

I am writing to express my gratitude for the Universal Access Scholarship I received for the 2022-23 academic year. I am very grateful for receiving the award that will be used for tuition, fees and/or books.

I was born and raised in Galveston, though at different points in my life my family and I had to live elsewhere, but through it all we’ve always come back here.

I plan on attending class and getting a degree just like my mom and dad. I aspire to get a higher education just like them and pursue a career path I dreamt of having. I attended Galveston College in the summer of my ninth grade year, and took a few classes during 2019 in the midst of the pandemic. Although I had a hard time with class during the peak of COVID, I still drive myself to obtaining my degree, and with the help of this scholarship, the path to receiving my degree will definitely be a whole lot easier.

I plan on pursuing a degree in art, more specifically digital art. Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated in creating things digitally. Over time, I became more infatuated with art itself and one day hope to be a character designer for many projects involving games, shows and other forms of media - maybe even designing clothes and have my own line of apparel. I will continue to work on myself in art while learning more about it here at Galveston College, as I keep moving forward on earning my associate degree in Art. I also plan to enroll at the UHCL once I get my degree to begin studying animation.

Receiving this scholarship motivates me to maintain my GPA and complete my degree. I thank you for your confidence and willingness to help me achieve my art degree!

Kevin McDonald

My name is Kevin McDonald and I am the recipient of the Ben & Marjorie Brown Trust Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters. This contribution to my education is greatly appreciated, and I am very grateful for the opportunity you have provided.

I grew up in Cypress, Texas, and still vividly remember weekend fishing trips to Galveston with my dad and two brothers. Over the last six years, I have traveled all over the world working contract jobs. I have spent the majority of this time working between Alaska and Antarctica following the polar summer season. Working in these remote locations has made me grow to love some of the last truly wild places left on this planet.

I am a non-traditional student and just started my third semester of a two-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program at Galveston College. After graduation I plan to move back to Alaska and provide care in remote communities to, hopefully, allow people of rural communities have the ability to remain near their homes and families.

Thank you for believing in me and the Galveston College Nursing program. Your donation is contributing to my future, allowing me to focus on my studies and become the best possible nurse I can be. I cannot fully express how grateful I am for your support and how excited I am to be a member of the Galveston College family.

I am writing to express my gratitude for the Galveston College Memorial Scholarship I received for the 2022-2023 academic year. I was beyond excited and thankful to learn that I was the recipient of the $450 award that will be used for tuition and books. I will graduate with an associate degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography in May 2024. My plans are to pass my ARDMS and specialty exams in OBYN/Abdomen, so I can work as a sonographer.

I am from Arlington, Texas. I found out about the sonography profession in high school and I knew that was what I wanted to do. I have always known I wanted to be in the health care field because I love helping and taking care of people, but sonography really interested me because I could work one-on-one with a doctor to provide images that can help discover what is wrong with the patient internally. Getting into sonography programs can be hard due to limited seats in classes, so I was very blessed to be accepted into the program offered by Galveston College.

My family is from Mexico. My parents did not have the opportunity to attend school past elementary school. They had to work at a very young age in order to provide for their families because they were the eldest. After they married, they moved to the United States to offer me better opportunities than they had. I will be the first in my family to receive a college degree. At first, my parents were very hesitant to let me live far away from home and go to a city where I knew no one, but they understood it was necessary for me to achieve my educational goals.

Receiving this scholarship has been such a big blessing because moving to a city where I do not have close friends or family to help me has been hard. My family cannot help me financially due to economic hardships, and the Galveston College Memorial Scholarship will help me worry less about finances. Paying rent, tuition, bills and food is a lot, so I am very thankful for the scholarship I have been awarded. I hope one day I will be able to help students with expenses to continue their education and achieve their dreams.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude as recipient of the John P. McGovern Memorial Endowment Scholarship in Health Sciences this year. This scholarship means a great deal to me because it has allowed me to continue pursuing my education without the burden of financial stress. I am currently studying to receive my associate degree in Nuclear Medicine, and with the help of this scholarship, I can focus on my studies and achieve my academic goals.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have clear career goals that I am working towards. I am passionate about nuclear medicine and theranostics, and I plan to use my education to make a meaningful contribution to these fields. My long-term career goal is to work as a PET/CT technologist and I believe that the knowledge and skills that I gain from my studies will help me achieve this goal.

Your generosity has not only provided me with financial support, but has also given me the motivation and confidence to work hard and pursue my dreams. I am committed to giving back to my community and using my education to make a positive impact in the world.

Once again, thank you for your support and for believing in me. I am grateful for this opportunity and promise to make the most of it.

I am writing to express my gratitude for the Griff & Marc N. Lambdin Memorial Scholarship I received for the 2021-22 academic year. I was beyond excited and grateful to learn that I was the recipient of the $400 award that will be used for tuition, fees and/or books.

I was born and raised in Galveston. I am a graduate of Ball High School class of 2020. I will be the first one in my family to receive my college degree. I have attended Galveston College since I graduated high school in 2020. I received a General Studies degree, but I am currently working on a Psychology degree. I am grateful for my counselor and professors at Galveston College for encouraging me to continue with my education and to never quit.

At the end of the spring 2022 term, I will graduate and receive my associate degree in Psychology from Galveston College. I plan on transferring to a fouryear university after the end of this semester with two associate degrees from Galveston College. After receiving a bachelor’s degree at a four-year university, I plan to pursue a career in the medical field by applying to UTMB to become a physician assistant (PA) in the future.

Receiving this scholarship motivates me to maintain my GPA and complete my degree. I hope one day I will be able to help a student with expenses to continue their education. I thank you for your confidence and willingness to help me achieve my Psychology degree.

I am writing to express my gratitude for the generous Janice Stanton Scholarship I received for the 2022-23 academic year. I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was the recipient of the $290 award for use toward tuition, fees and books.

I was born and raised in Louise, Texas. I am a graduate of Louise High School class of 2018. I have attended Galveston College since 2020, following my associate degree in General Studies from Wharton County Junior College in 2019. I am grateful to my counselor and professors at Galveston College for encouraging me to continue with my education, and for donors to scholarship programs that benefit students like me.

At the end of spring 2023, I will receive my certificate from Galveston College in Computed Tomography. My plans are to pursue a career in Computed Tomography anywhere in the Houston area. While enrolled in the Computed Tomography program at Galveston College, I am also currently working at Houston Methodist as a nuclear medicine technologist. I received my degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology from Galveston College last spring!

Receiving the Janice Stanton Scholarship motivates me to maintain my GPA, complete my education and get employed in my chosen field. I hope one day I will be able to help fellow computed tomography students with their studies and motivate them. I thank you for your willingness to help me achieve my CT certification.

Jaden Lopez

I am so thankful for the Universal Access Scholarship I have received for the 2022-2023 academic year. It was such an immense help having this money to be able to cover all my tuition and book expenses. My family and I were in a tough spot with medical bills, so this lifted stress off my family’s shoulders.

I’ve been a resident of Galveston all my life and always dreamed of attending Galveston College. I am a graduate of Ball High School, class of 2022. I am the first in my family to attend college. Since my dad was not able to attend high school and my mom could not afford college, this motivates me to strive for a greater education, since I was able to receive more opportunities than they did in their youth.

At the end of this semester, I plan to take summer classes, as well as continuing my second year at Galveston College. My goal is to receive my associate degree in Business Administration, then transferring to the University of Houston to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

Receiving this scholarship shows me that there is no excuse for me to give up, and that one day soon my career goals will become a reality. I hope to one day have my own fashion business and inspire many others around me. Thank you so much for helping me come closer to my dream in life.

Kimberley Laday

My name is Kimberly Laday, and I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Healthcare Management program. I am a parent of three, two girls and one boy. I also have two granddaughters. I was born and raised in Galveston and am a proud graduate of the class of ‘82. I love for them to see me studying, writing papers and taking a test. I want them to see how hard work can count and add things to your life.

My mom passed away in 2017; she was here when I graduated in 2012 with my Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management. After her death, I decided to do more, and receiving the John Parker Davie Scholarship helped me with that decision of a lifetime. This is not a joke; it’s real work for a better life. It is not easy, but the benefit is grand. After the big day of completing this program, I plan to seek a higher position at my current place of employment.

I would like to thank donors for the $800 scholarship. The generous donation to my education is appreciated. Galveston College has been the choice of a lifetime to have the program I need at this time in my life. I have two associate degrees from the College of the Mainland and now I am leaping into something higher to better my life. I was afraid to do this and the college’s/donors’ trust in me made my load much more manageable. For donors to help someone they do not know speaks volumes. I am a Christian and I have prayed for my donors many times. I pray that they do not stop with me. They have been a blessing to me and my family more than can be imagined.

My actual community plan is to be part of a board that will have Galveston College and College of the Mainland work together to educate the minds of our Galveston County children.

Thank you for believing in and trusting in me. I will not let you down.

Sara J. Reason

I am from East Texas, where I graduated high school from The Brook Hill School in 2003. From there I went on to study Instrumental Music Education at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Music in 2010. I am a professional violinist and have been a public school orchestra director for both middle and high schools for 11 years in West and East Texas. I love music and teaching, and it will always be a part of my life, but I am excited about the future of pursuing a new interest and career in Radiation Therapy through Galveston College.

This past year, I completed my first year in the Radiation Therapy program and have completed my first of three clinical rotations at UTMB Medical Center for Radiation Oncology. I am thoroughly enjoying my time in clinic, as we are now seeing what we have learned from class in real life application. At the completion of the spring 2023 semester, I will earn my associate degree in Applied Science, certificate and look forward to a new career working with a reputable institution to provide aid to patients in need of radiation therapy.

With the coming increase of clinical participation during the fall and spring semesters, it does not seem feasible to maintain my full-time job while completing my clinical rotations. The financial assistance you provided through the Joan Cannady Memorial Scholarship has helped lighten the costly burden of relying on working full-time to afford this program. My education pursuits would not be possible without generous support from scholarship sponsors like your organization. Thank you for your trust and willingness to help me achieve this new life change.

Gustavo Salazar Lima

I would like to thank Griff & Marc N. Lambdin Memorial Scholarship for the monetary support and want to let you know that you are helping a student who appreciates it and works hard to achieve his goals.

I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a high possibility of obtaining a second degree in Computer Science. I am currently enrolled in the Electrical Engineering degree plan at Galveston College. My plan is to transfer my credits to a 4-year accredited university. I am considering the University of Houston main campus. I am the historian officer for the STEM Honors program, and I have two STEM contracts for this semester. I did two contracts in the previous semester as well. These contracts help me to gain experience in research and writing a scientific paper. For this semester, one is for my Differential Equations class and the another for my Macroeconomics class. Those contracts help me with my research and communication skills. As per my career goals, I want to work with digital electronic circuits using FPGAs, microcontrollers, PLCs, etc. Research is one of my career goals because I like to develop and improve tools to increase my own and other’s productivity.

This scholarship will help me to pay for my classes so that means that I can focus on studying and learning instead of looking for a way to get some cash to pay for the rent, groceries and bills.

Navid Ganjali Dashti

I am grateful to be a recipient of the William Maury Darst Memorial Scholarship which awards me $500 for the term of fall 2022 and spring 2023. I am certain that many hardworking and deserving students had also sent in their applications, therefore I would like to express to you that I do not take this honor for granted. Being the recipient of this scholarship will provide me relief from the economic burdens that come with being a student as I will use the funds to partially cover my tuition fees.

I am an international student from Sweden with roots from Iran. My parents left their native country during the 1980s with the intention of providing a better life for me in Sweden, where I would be safe and have the freedom to strive for whatever goals I may have in mind. Whenever I feel overwhelmed and begin to have doubts regarding this pursuit, thinking of my dear parents’ struggle to provide me the comfortable life and opportunity I have helps put those doubts to rest.

I graduated with two degrees from Galveston College after completing the spring 2022 term. My two degrees are an Associate of Arts in Psychology and Associate of Arts in General Studies. I am thankful that I will be able to continue my studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where I am grateful to have been accepted. Being a student at Galveston College, my experience with students and professors has generally been pleasant, friendly and cordial. Thus, I can sincerely say that I have enjoyed my time at this institution and I would like to once again express my gratitude in receiving this honorable award.
