Welcome Back! A Message from the Director of Continuing Education Welcome back to Fall 2021 at Galveston College! The Galveston College Continuing Education department reaches out to the community by offering professional development and career training programs, customized training programs for business, industry and government, and lifelong learning opportunities for personal growth and enrichment. The Continuing Education department also offers a robust schedule of online courses and programs through ed2go that prepare students for in-demand occupations and nationally recognized certifications. As face-to-face classes resume this fall, we are frequently monitoring health recommendations and are prepared to move face-to-face class offerings to virtual or online classes if a situation warrants. In the event of important deadlines or class dates changing due to COVID-19, please visit our information page at gc.edu/coronavirus. Certified Nurse Aide

Train to become a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) in a long-term care facility. Course topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety observation, reporting and basic comfort and care. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a level one certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may need to be simulated due to COVID-19 restrictions. Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and have a watch with a second hand. The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Students are responsible for certification testing with Prometric and paying testing fees online. Certified Phlebotomy Technician Get started as an entry-level phlebotomist and prepare for your certification exam with the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Study the skills used in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a Level One certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may need to be simulated due to COVID-19 restrictions. Study the heart’s anatomy, function and how it produces electricity and how one records this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course addresses the electrical-cardio changes of commonly seen diseases and heart rhythm disturbances. Successful completion should prepare students for the NHA certification exam and introduce them to the skills necessary for employment in the field.

MASSAGE THERAPY “Knead a New Career?” Next class begins

FALL 2021 Start planning now!

Are you looking for a career where you can help others feel better by relieving their pain and stress? If so, Galveston College’s Massage Therapy program may be right for you. This comprehensive program provides the education, skills and hands-on practical experience you need to pursue this rewarding career. This three-semester program features classroom instruction, hands-on training and client service internships. To help you transition from student to practitioner, you will complete an internship in which you work directly with clients to provide massages. Upon successful completion you should be ready to take the Massage and Bodyworks Licensing Exam (MBLEX) to become licensed to practice in the State of Texas. This program meets the requirements of individuals planning to take the MBLEX exam for state licensing put forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and presents material in business practices and ethics, anatomy and physiology, health and hygiene, chair massage, pathology, hydrotherapy, kinesiology, history of massage, body mechanics, massage techniques, and rehabilitative aspects of massage. Additionally, students will have a practice internship on proper massage protocol for various populations.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO STUDENTS: Additional supplies such as a massage table, sheets, towels, textbooks, massage oils, and linens must be purchased separately. Students are required to have these PRIOR TO INTERNSHIP. Background check and registration with the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) are an additional cost, and students should plan on taking the MBLEX prior to starting internship hours. Students must meet the healthcare program requirements listed on our website at least one week prior to class starting. This includes a criminal background check and HIPPA training, as well as immunizations. Please be advised that depending on your record, a criminal conviction may prevent you from licensure by the State of Texas for this program. QUICK START

ELECTRICAL OR HVAC/R HELPER PROGRAMS

Thanks to a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, Galveston College is able to offer a new Quickstart + program designed to help people learn foundational skills in the fast-growing HVAC and electrical industries. The hybrid program runs for 8 weeks, and you will be presented with the basics of a trade, including safety procedures, proper tool usage, regulations, codes and more. This program is designed for people to learn the basics of a trade and start making money right away. We not only offer job training, but career counseling and safety certifications with both NCCER and OSHA as well. Tuition is covered for everyone accepted into the program. However, if you are accepted into the program, you will need to purchase your own steel toe boots and personal protective clothing.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS An individual applying to the Quickstart + program must: • Be 18 years of age or older. • Present proof of age, such as driver license or birth certificate. • Be a United States citizen or certified to work in the United States. A Social Security card or original I-9 documentation is required. • If male, you must meet the Selective Service registration requirement. Most males have already registered and can print out the registration verification form by visiting: https://www.sss.gov/Home/Verification. • Must have a working computer and internet access. • Must have steel toe boots and proper PPE.

Galveston College has announced an innovative training partnership that will enable the college to offer free workforce training to clients of local social-service agencies and others in need of marketable skills. Generously funded by the Moody Permanent Endowment Fund, this training opportunity is aimed at helping unemployed and disadvantaged segments of our community. CRAFT TRADE TRAINING Pipefitter Helper

Train to be a pipefitter helper. Students who complete NCCER Core and Level 1 can earn an occupational skills award along with NCCER credentials. The NCCER Core Curriculum presents the safe use of hand tools, power tools, rigging, and power equipment used in the plumbing trade for installation of different plumbing systems. The entry-level NCCER Pipefitting Level 1 training presents mathematical operations necessary to calculate laying lengths of pipe fittings for fabrication. Students do hands-on projects in the shop fabricating pipe layouts and the basics of the pipefitting are presented. This program is eligible for TPEG and payment plans. * Special grant-funded opportunities exist for those who are unemployed (see page 9). Students must register for both classes.

AUTOMOTIVE DIESEL TECHNICIAN Automotive Diesel Technician

The Galveston College program, which is comprised of two Occupational Skills awards which combine for a Level One Certification, is taught at the Ball High School automotive and diesel technology lab, and is open to interested students of all ages. Students who complete both courses of Diesel Engine Testing and Repair and both courses in Automotive Climate Controls earn a Level One Certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Diesel Engine Testing and Repair 1

This program provides students seeking a career in diesel technology the skills necessary to successfully enter the workforce. Topics include the use of engine measuring tools and the principles of operations for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines. A class set of textbooks is included in the tuition. Students must wear long sleeve shirts and pants in the shop. High school diploma or high school equivalent is required. Classes are held at the Ball High Automotive Center. Students must complete both courses to be awarded certificate. Included in the course is the ASE-Entry LevelMedium/Heavy Truck Diesel Engines exam, and successful completer will earn an Occupational Skills award upon the completion of both courses. *Spring semester is not available for registration until late October. Automotive Climate Controls

This program will help you explore and familiarize yourself with the theories and systems of automotive air conditioning and heating system malfunctions, manual and electronic climate control systems and safety. EPA guidelines for refrigerant replacement are presented. Classes are taught at the Ball High Automotive Center. Students must wear PPE. A classroom set of textbooks is available for use. This program is TPEG and payment plan eligible. Students must complete both courses to be awarded certificate. Basic Portraiture

Nationally known artist Eddie Filer will teach a series of eight-week classes on the art of painting and drawing the human head. By teaching the fundamentals of blocking in the human head with big shapes then working from the general to the particular, Mr. Filer will be focusing on changes in the face. Students will learn to recognize changes in the face from light to dark, variations of value changes in color, warm and cool temperature change in paint, large to small comparisons of plains in the face, and building threedimensional form of the human head. Mr. Filer will also teach his way of getting a likeness through seeing negative to positive spacing, by distance relating and a big focus on the development of learning to see. GED and ESL Classes Advance your Opportunities Through a partnership with College of the Mainland (COM), students can take classes for high school equivalency prep and English as a second language (ESL) right here at Galveston College.

High School Equivalency (GED)

High school equivalency classes develop the reading, writing, and math skills needed to pass a Texas high school equivalency exam. These classes are also a great place to improve skills to move into a workforce training program at Galveston College. These eight-week classes begin five times a year, tuition is free, and there are no textbooks or other purchases required. Morning or evening classes are offered at several locations. Students who complete their high school equivalency test receive a diploma and can participate in the COM graduation ceremony.

English as a Second Language (ESL) English as a second language classes help students improve their everyday English, get ready to attend college, or learn new job skills. Classes cover reading, writing, listening and speaking the English language. There is no minimum skill level required. Courses are eight weeks long and meet at many locations. The tuition is free and no books or purchases are needed.

Students may request that Galveston College withhold their directory information from the general public. To do so, students must fill out the appropriate form with the Admissions Office. Record of Completion And CEUs: Nationally recognized CEUs may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours.
