Galveston College Foundation
The Galveston College Foundation’s Universal Access program never wavered. It is the oldest college promise program in the State delivering over 1,900 local high school graduates to earn associate degrees, a program certificate, or a transfer to a four-year university. In 2020 the Foundation awarded 235 UA scholarships. The total amount of money awarded through UA and UA Plus (Non-tuition Education Expenses) as of August 31, 2020 was $261,031. Our supporters never wavered. Donors are the driving force behind the Foundation’s mission to support and enhance the ability of Galveston College to improve people’s lives through lifelong learning. Because of the generosity of our donors including foundations, individuals, businesses, and corporate entities, UA is fully endowed. UA Plus, or Non-tuition Educational Expenses Fund, weathered the Covid-19 and winter storm, and our students continued to receive funding for educational expenses. Galveston College Foundation continues to manage fifty-five named and endowed
scholarships in addition to other public and private donations including the Moody Foundation and the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation funds. The Seibel funds were responsible for the new student housing and the Moody funds made UA fully funded. Despite the unprecedented turbulence of 2020, Galveston College Foundation and its supporters remained steadfast, moving forward to secure an educated workforce with little to no debt upon graduation. After seven years on the Galveston College Foundation Board, my term is up. Thank you to Dr. Myles Shelton for leading the College to new levels. Thank you to my board members for not wavering, despite a pandemic, and for being a part of what makes Galveston special. I want to say a special thank you to three exceptional people who came before me and showed me the importance of the Foundation and the College to the students on our Island. Galveston College Foundation Vision
A Brief History Founded in 1996, Galveston College Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that receives gifts, grants, donations, and scholarships for the benefit of Galveston College and its students. Since its founding, it has helped more than 1,900 students attain their dream of attending college. Galveston College Foundation holds assets of over $16,000,000 largely restricted in areas of the performance-based Universal Access Endowment Scholarship (UA) and Non-Tuition Educational Expenses Fund (now known as UA Plus.)
The Galveston College Foundation is an organization that actively encourages the community to invest, through it, the funds and other assets and energies needed for Galveston College and its students. With this effort the Foundation helps the College to operate at a level far above that which can be achieved using only state and federal funding.

The Galveston College Foundation exists to support and enhance the ability of Galveston College to accomplish its mission of improving people’s lives through lifelong learning.

message from Galveston College Karen Flowers, Chair Galveston College Board of Regents Galveston College has been transforming the lives of our students for more than 50 years. Without exception, we focus on student access to education and providing comprehensive support to succeed. Opening doors, changing lives is a concept that encapsulates the stories of student success that unfold every day across our campus. In a year when a pandemic captured the attention of the world, and we adjusted our operations to follow health and safety guidelines, it would have been reasonable to lose that focus. Yet because of dedication and commitment of the entire Galveston College community, we remain centered. We are proud of our students who continue to learn and succeed amidst the challenges and changes that they have experienced. We are proud of our faculty and staff who every day always come with the mindset of helping students succeed. And, we are grateful to our donors and supporters who never pause in giving generously to the Galveston College Foundation to carry on the tradition of philanthropy that supports our students and our College. Together, we have many accomplishments from 2020 to celebrate. We can and should celebrate the accomplishments of our students 4

and our faculty and staff. In addition, we celebrate the completion of The Abe and Annie Siebel Student Residences which were successfully completed and safely occupied at the beginning of the fall semester. We are so grateful for the Abe and Annie Siebel Foundation’s generous funding, which made this achievement possible during uncertain times. And, as we look to the future, we celebrate that the planning for a new instructional building to support our nursing and health science programs is underway. Our faculty and staff demonstrated excellence, not only shifting to an online teaching and learning model in the span of a few days in March of 2020 while never losing sight of the high standards of quality educational programs and the ultimate success of their students. And during the pandemic, because of the never ending commitment of our faculty and staff, Galveston College successfully opened for the fall of 2020 new Associate of Applied Science programs in Logistics and Instrumentation. In addition, the College announced a new Emergency Medical Services Professional certificate and alternative Associate of Applied Science degree program for paramedics who are
seeking to advance in their careers. And in December of 2020, 13 Galveston College students made history as the first students to receive baccalaureate degrees from Galveston College. Each of these graduates received a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Healthcare Management. And, we are looking forward to opening a new baccalaureate degree program in nursing in 2022. As you read this report, you’ll learn of individual stories of success, which were made possible through a collective commitment to the College’s mission and purposes. We hope you will enjoy reading these stories about our students as well as the College and understand what we celebrate would not have been possible without you, our supporters and benefactors. Galveston College remains steadfast to its mission and purposes, teaching students and producing alumni who will play important roles in our community and in the state’s economy. Your interest and support remind us as leaders of all that has happened - all we have accomplished - and reaffirms the plans for the future as we continue to move forward.

Director of Development and Galveston College Foundation I recently joined Galveston College as the Director of Development and Galveston College Foundation. Since arriving on campus, I have felt the spirit of a strong, close-knit community all around me. The shining stories within this report of student success, strong leadership and donor generosity are inspirational. I am quickly learning a long history of what has made, and continues to make, Galveston Island a special place. While I will never be able to claim B.O.I., I am enthusiastic about becoming a part of this community. In 2021, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Galveston College Foundation. Much Galveston College Foundation
has been accomplished since its founding in 1996. Universal Access has served over 1,900 students. Universal Access Plus (UA+) was created to help assure the promise of debtfree graduation when it became evident nontuition expenses like books were also a barrier for students. Donors and strong leadership have helped the Foundation accumulate assets of over $16 million to benefit current and future students. The past 25 years have been filled with extraordinary results, and, still, there is opportunity for greater impact. The Galveston College Foundation exists to support and enhance the ability of Galveston College to accomplish its mission of improving people’s lives through lifelong learning. I am excited to now help lead that mission into the future. We need to continue to educate our future nurses, electrical engineers, welders, chefs, EMTs, teachers, medical records technicians and business owners. I thank the community for its ongoing investment of philanthropic funds needed for Galveston College and its students. per semester hour with a lifetime limit of $2,100. The UA+ voucher may be used during any semester as long the student remains in good academic standing. The UA+ award is extended to UA students enrolled in a GC baccalaureate program.
UNIVERSAL ACCESS Endowment Scholarship
Galveston College Foundation’s Universal Access Endowment has supported over 1,900 students’ transition to self-sufficiency. These students were not eligible for federal or state funding– oftentimes because their income exceeded eligibility limits, yet they still needed financial assistance to complete their studies and graduate. Beginning in late fall 2014, the Foundation raised significant sums for the Universal Access Endowment and individual scholarships.

Thanks to consistent generosity from the Galveston community, area foundations, and businesses, the Universal Access Endowment upgraded tuition support annually. We are especially grateful for the significant support of the Moody Foundation to this program. In 2018, the Foundation directors initiated the UA+ program as a one-time voucher for non-tuition needs, including books, online access codes, and licensing fees. Beginning in spring 2021 the award was raised to $35
In fall 2021, the Galveston College Foundation Universal Access Endowment Scholarship instituted a new lifetime limit of $5,476 for fulltime and part-time students, which covers tuition and required fees for a 60-credit hour associate degree. All students must have a degree plan on file. Upon enrollment for the Universal Access award, the student must use the funds within five years. After completing the initial semester, UA becomes a performancebased scholarship. Students must receive a minimum GPA of 2.0 to continue accessing funds from the UA endowment. 2020 Annual Report

Tara Donelly I am writing to express my gratitude for the generous Universal Access Endowment Scholarship I received for my education at Galveston College that began in Summer 2020. I was very excited to learn that I am the recipient of a $4,620 award with a $500 book voucher. This scholarship will help me over the next few years to complete more classes, such as sciences and math, which will be applied toward my major at Texas A&M Galveston. I am a 19-year-old student who has lived in Galveston, Texas for the majority of my life. My family moved here from Houston when I was about 3 because our neighborhood was being sold off to become apartment buildings. My family is small with me and my two parents who, even though they are divorced, remain good friends. My mom is a longshoreman and my dad is retired. I was introduced to Galveston College through Ball High. While there, I began taking Dual Credit classes my junior year. I loved being able to do some of the basic college credits early and for a lower price. My current educational goal is to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Coastal Environment Science and Society from Texas A&M Galveston with a STEM Teaching Minor. I was inspired to go for this degree path from my time living in Galveston with its unique history, background, culture and environment. I also want to receive the STEM Teaching Minor because later in my life I hope to be a science teacher at Ball High.
Some of my teachers there helped make me who I am today and I hope to do the same for other students in the future. The Universal Access Endowment Scholarship award will be a tremendous help towards payment of my tuition, books and fees. I will be able to attend school with less anxiety about my financial future. This scholarship also relieves stress from my family regarding tuition payment. The money we save will be able to be put toward a Master’s degree in my future so I will have more job opportunities. I am very excited to have the opportunity to thank you for your generosity. Without donors like you, many students like myself, would not be able to go after an education or career that they truly desire. You, my parents and my high school teachers, have provided me with great examples of how important it is to help someone else. With my degree in Coastal Environment and Society and minor in STEM teaching, it will be possible for me to one day provide financial and educational support for others. 2020 Annual Report

Galveston College is an important part of our community and I am so blessed to be part of it. My connection to Galveston College goes way back to the 70s when I graduated with an associate degree which allowed me to go forward and receive my Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees. When I think of Galveston College, I have nothing but good memories. As an alumna, a supporter, and Foundation Board member, I am pleased to donate to UA + (non-tuition assistance) and help fund the UA+ Endowment. Many students need this support to succeed as they struggle to find funds to cover additional expenses of books, supplies and tuition, or they may have concerns about paying off loans after they graduate. UA+ allows scholars to focus entirely on their studies instead of being concerned by the cost of books and supplies. Giving back helps the next generation of students which is so important and ensures that students can manage costs while getting a great education.

STUDENT STORIES I am originally from Cali, Colombia. I have always enjoyed cooking from a very young age when my mother began teaching me how to cook. It has now turned into a passion and is the reason I am a part of the current Culinary Arts class at Galveston College. I was at an impasse as to which college to choose for the Culinary Arts. A colleague of my husband spoke to me of the benefits and the superiority of the class at Galveston College and her experiences from programs at various other campuses swayed my decision.
Mariluz McGrath I am writing to thank you for providing me with a Culinary Scholarship that is offering me $1,426.00 towards my tuition, fees and books for the Spring 2021 semester. I am in the Culinary Arts class degree program. These scholarship funds will be applied towards my Spring 2021 tuition in the Culinary Arts class at Galveston College. I cannot begin to describe my amazement upon reading your letter naming me as a recipient of the scholarship. I was so overjoyed that I contacted my husband immediately and told him the good news. My future plans after graduation are to open a Colombian Food restaurant in Clute, Texas. There are many Tex-Mex, Chinese and Italian restaurants nearby, but no Colombian or South American cuisine. The scholarship that you have blessed me with will help me accomplish my goal of opening a restaurant that will introduce my community to the cuisine from my native country and to the cuisine from around the globe. Navid Ganjalie Dashti I am grateful to be a recipient of the Galveston Community Memorial Scholarship which awards me $275 for Spring 2021. I am certain that many hardworking and deserving students had also sent in their applications, therefore I would like to express to you that I do not take this honor for granted. Being the recipient of this scholarship will provide me relief from the economic burdens that comes with being a student as I will use the funds to partially cover my tuition fees. I am an international student from Sweden with roots from Iran. My parents left their native country during the 1980s with the intention of providing a better life for me in Sweden where I would be safe and have the freedom to strive after whatever goals I may have in mind. I was initially enrolled at Galveston College for the Spring 2019 semester as a student majoring in Psychology. I have since gladly participated in several events organized by the college, such as the food distributions. I am currently a member of the Galveston College E-sports club, a student organization active on campus. Being a student at Galveston College, my experience with students and professors have generally been pleasant, friendly and cordial. I plan to graduate from Galveston College after the Spring 2021 term. As a psychology majoring student, my goal is to eventually obtain a doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology which will allow me to work as a Clinical Neuropsychologist. I personally find this area of Psychology to be the most interesting as I am fascinated with the relationship between an individual’s mind and behavior. I also am interested in being able to treat and offer assistance to people, as I consider this to be a noble action. As a result of being involved with campus events, I have become acquainted with the Student L ife Coordinator who was kind enough to offer me a job for the upcoming semester as his assistant. I have happily accepted his offer as I look forward to being able to help create an enjoyable college experience for my fellow students. l once again sincerely thank you for this great honor. A pandemic, natural disasters, and politics have brought fear & financial hardships to most Americans. My family has been affected financially during these times. Tammy Walker I am writing to express my gratitude for the generous Letha M. Camp Memorial Scholarship I received for the 202021 academic year. I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was the recipient of the $1,800 award. I am a 46-year-old mom and wife from Harris County. In 1988, my dad had a 3300-pound steel wall fall on top of him. As a result, his body was crushed. He survived. I would help the nurses care for my dad. It was during this time that my interest in the medical field began. When I turned 16, my brother and I decided we wanted to join the local volunteer fire department.

In 1997, I obtained my AEMT through Sam Houston State University. Life kept getting in the way after that, and I was not able to get my paramedic certification.
