HANDCRAFTED

from the mornington peninsula

Tusen Takk ‘Thousand Thanks’

Scandinavian viking beer Tusen Takk is Norwegian for a ‘thousand thanks’, used in modern day as ‘thank you very much’. This beer is paying homage to the original brewers from Scandinavia and thanking them for their ingenuity without which we would likely not have modern beer. Inspired by traditional Finnish and Norwegian brewing, this ale has been lautered through Blue Spruce leaves inside a trough-shaped mash tun made from the trunk of a Blue Spruce tree, known as a Kuurna. Mornington has used a Norwegian-style yeast, using a traditional Finnish style of lautering, creating a fusion between regional techniques.

CONTENTS GABS PRO TIPS 8 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS 10

WELCOME TO GABS 2019 And HELLO BRISBANE! Since we started this event nine years at The Local Taphouse in St Kilda, our mission has been simple. GABS has always been about sharing our love of craft beer and cider with as many people as possible, so we’re thrilled now to be extending the GABS experience to Queensland’s craft beer capital. Wherever you are on your own craft beer and cider ‘journey’, whether you’re just starting out, or well down the rabbit hole, we want to help you take just one step further. In this Guide, you’ll find helpful tasting tools, ‘traffic light’ colour guides to beer and cider complexity, and informative tasting notes to help plan your approach. You can sample from up to 180 different ‘Festival Beers & Ciders’ made exclusively for the event. Chat to the people behind the brews at the Dan Murphy’s Marketplace. Or learn from the best at the Mornington Peninsula Brewery Craft College and Ariston Food & Drink Experience. And most importantly, take in all the festival has to offer, and have a brilliant time with your mates over some fantastic beers and ciders. We couldn’t do this without the hundreds of brewers and cidermakers across Australia and New Zealand who work so hard to make GABS so special. Thanks also to our partners, food vendors, staff and suppliers. And our warmest thanks to the hundreds of volunteers for donating their time so that every person here can have such a great time. Enjoy yourselves and please drink responsibly.

Steve & Guy

Cheers!

You’ll be taken all over the festival, searching for clues and challenges. Think pub trivia, funny photos, clever videos, paddle sculptures and more. Keep an eye on the LIVE leaderboard at the Main Stage and stay tuned for TRIPLE POINTS in the final hour of the session, for your chance to win awesome Mountain Goat swag. Will your squad claim the inaugural MOUNTAIN GOAT TRAIL title?

GABS and circus go hand in hand, and this year is no exception with some of the best roving circus and sideshow artists in the country bringing the WOW right to you. Keep an eye out for the big finale at the stage towards the centre of the hall!

Always one of the most popular (and highly amusing) attractions at GABS, this year the Stomping Ground Silent Disco is bigger than ever! Head to the giant Boom Box truck about three hours into each session, grab your headphones, and dance like nobody’s watching. But of course, they all are.

Ever wondered if some beers might age well over time? Now’s your exclusive opportunity to find out. Before ‘craft’ was even a thing, Coopers have been releasing their annual limited edition Vintage Ale. Like all Coopers ales, the highly anticipated release undergoes secondary fermentation and natural conditioning. And now especially for GABS, the Coopers brewing team has brought together a selection of what they consider their finest releases of the last decade for a truly one-of-a-kind tasting paddle - the 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2018 Vintage Ales. Head to the Coopers stand to take a journey through time with one of Australia’s most iconic beers.

It’s piñata, but not as you know it. The folks at Balter know a thing or two about enjoyment. And what could be more joyful than taking a good old swing at a giant tinnie-shaped piñata, and hearing that delightful crunch before the prizes rain down. Introducing Balter Tiñata, an altogether rewarding and somewhat ridiculous experience that can’t be missed. To take your swing, register early at the Balter stand.

Perennial GABS favourite house band, The Ale Capones, are back and will be working the crowd like no one else can with their trademark tunes and humour. Don’t miss their big finale toward the end of the session with a hall-wide singalong of Bohemian Rhapsody!

Don’t just tell your mates about your favourite beers at GABS. Rate them! Download the RateBeer app and get involved in the world’s biggest community of beer lovers. Even better, if you rate ten beers or ciders while you’re here at GABS, you could win $1,000 worth of BEER!

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

GABS HOTTEST 100

AUSSIE CRAFT BEERS OF 2018 NOW IN ITS ELEVENTH YEAR, THE GABS HOTTEST 100 AUSSIE CRAFT BEERS POLL SHINES A POWERFUL SPOTLIGHT ON THE TRENDS, BRANDS AND BREWERIES SHAPING THE BOOMING CRAFT BEER INDUSTRY. DESCRIBED BY AUSTRALIAN BREWS NEWS AS “THE LARGEST AND MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE’S CHOICE POLL IN THE LAND,” THE 2018 EDITION SAW A RECORD 31,000 BEER LOVERS PLACE MORE THAN 155,000 VOTES FOR THEIR FAVOURITE CRAFT BEERS OF THE YEAR, THEN CELEBRATE THE LIVE COUNTDOWN ON SUNDAY 27 JANUARY, MANY AT THE 45 OFFICIAL EVENTS HELD AROUND THE COUNTRY.

BALTER & QUEENSLAND STAND TALL

From a field comprising some 2,350 beers from more than 260 breweries, Gold Coast brewery Balter claimed the title of Australia’s favourite craft beer for the second year running with their ‘XPA’. Balter has proven to be a dominant force in the craft beer landscape, as evidenced with an impressive three beers in the top ten, including their IIPA (Double IPA) and IPA (India Pale Ale) in 6th & 7th position respectively. On the broader scale, Queensland continues to emerge as a craft beer juggernaut, with 22 beers from 9 breweries (up from 15 beers and 5 breweries in 2017). While New South Wales maintained its overall presence on the list (26 beers from 13 breweries), Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia dropped in representation from the previous year.

NEW & INDEPENDENT

Balter’s IIPA was one of 21 beers released in 2018 to make the list, demonstrating the impact that a popular release can have in the fast moving craft beer sector. The New England IPA, or ‘Hazy IPA’, style was prevalent amongst these new entries, and doubled its presence overall with beers including Hop Nation’s ‘Jedi Juice’ (#9), Dainton’s ‘Blood Orange New England Rye IPA’ (#36) and CoConspirators’ ‘The Matriarch’ (#63). In May 2018, the Independent Brewers Association launched an ‘Independent Seal’ to help educate craft beer drinkers about brewery ownership. The campaign seems to have had an impact in this year’s Hottest 100, with 88% of the beers listed made by independently owned breweries (up from 71% in 2017). Lion owned ‘Furphy Refreshing Ale’ is the highest placed non-independent beer at #25, and was the only nonindependent beer to improve its position on the previous year.

HOTTEST 100 STAYING POWER

In second position was Stone & Wood’s ‘Pacific Ale’. Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2018, the iconic beer from Byron Bay has now appeared on the Hottest 100 podium for nine consecutive years, making it the most loved beer in the poll’s history. Also returning to the podium was Crankshaft from BentSpoke in third place, topping a charge of five beers from the popular Canberra brewery, all placing within the top quarter of the list.

LOCAL SUPPORT PROVES POWERFUL

Localism appears to be an influential factor throughout the results, with craft beer drinkers increasingly supporting beers and breweries from their immediate region. The 2018 list features the very first Northern Territory brewery to appear, with fans and local media getting behind Darwin’s One Mile Brewery to rocket four of their beers into the big league. The Sunshine Coast also voted with a parochial view, elevating popular local breweries Your Mates, 10 Toes, and Brouhaha into the list, and regional NSW favourite The Welder’s Dog rallied strong support to place four of its beers, including the first ever Ginger Beer to make the Hottest 100.

KNOW YOUR BEER STYLES

IPA

The name might hark back to the days of the British Empire but, in the world of modern craft beer, India Pale Ales are first and foremost there to showcase hops, the little green flowers that can lend beers aroma, flavour and bitterness. Known for their punchy flavours and aromas and typically possessing bold bitterness, IPAs are synonymous with characteristics such as floral, citrusy, tropical, earthy and piny. Session IPAs at one end and Double / Imperial IPAs at the other mean it’s the kind of beer that can sit below 4 percent ABV but can also be cranked up into double figures; at last year’s GABS, Akasha entered a quadruple IPA as their Festival Beer… As modern brewers continue to push boundaries, a growing number of IPA substyles have popped up in recent years with the category seemingly destined to undergo an endless evolution. Here’s some of the latest riffs you’re likely to find pouring from the Husky Container Bars.

HAZY IPA’s

Credited as originating with brewers in America’s New England region, hazy IPAs have myriad beer fans, a fair few critics and a brewer’s kettle worth of names. New England-style, Vermontstyle, juicy or hazy can all precede IPA in a style that pours far cloudier than the clear and bright appearance once seen as a goal for brewers. The haze can be derived from a number of brewing techniques, including the use of certain yeast strains, specific malt bills – including oats and wheat – and huge late hop additions. Hazy IPAs are known for their low bitterness, smooth texture and hop flavours that tend to resemble citrus or tropical fruit juice.

BRUT IPA’s

Borrowing from the world of champagne and sparkling wine, Brut IPAs are known for their bone-dry finish. By making use of the enzyme known as amylase, complex sugars that yeast usually can’t consume are broken down so they can be converted to alcohol, thus stripping residual sweetness from the finished beer. That dryness paired with a restrained bitterness and lively carbonation means aromatic and flavoursome hops are left to shine unhindered and makes for a beer where, in the best examples, drinkability is turned all the way up to 11.

MILKSHAKE IPA’s

Lactose has been used in brewing for more than a century, though typically it’s found a home in darker beers like stouts. It’s a form of sugar that naturally occurs in milk and, since it can’t be fermented by traditional brewer’s yeast, it can add a sweetness and creamier texture to any beer. In recent years, brewers have started adding lactose – along with vanilla and all manner of fruits – to IPAs to make beers that are typically sweeter, creamier, fruitier and richer than your traditional IPA. Sound decadent? They can be. But, since you’re at GABS, indulge away as you explore what can happen when brewers let their creative sides run free.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVES & WIN

30

THE BEST OF THE FEST MANY A FINE BEER HAS WON THE GABS PEOPLE’S CHOICE FESTIVAL BEER, INCLUDING YEASTIE BOYS’ GUNNAMATTA, LA SIRENE’S PRALINE, AND BACCHUS BREWING’S PEANUT BRITTLE GOSE. IN 2018, BIG SHED BREWING CONCERN TOOK HOME THE TROPHY WITH THEIR HUGELY POPULAR BOOZY FRUIT NEW ENGLAND IPA. WE CHAT WITH BIG SHED CO-FOUNDERS CRAIG BASFORD AND JASON HARRIS ABOUT WHAT THE WIN MEANT FOR THE TEAM.

WHAT’S THE BIG SHED STORY IN A NUTSHELL?

Well, it was like this. Two people with no commercial brewing experience, no hospitality experience and no beer sales experience started a brewery with nothing much other than a naive sense of optimism. We built the best brewery we could afford (no bank would give us money and rightly so) and set about making beers we enjoyed. Being limited in cash and talent meant we had to find creative solutions to problems, a classic example being using pool noodles as glycol line insulation (our fridgey mates tell us they were useless, but they did look fun). Our beer philosophy has always been to let our curiosity run wild, explore flavours and have some fun. After all we aren’t solving any diplomatic issues, we are making beer. Fast forward to today and we have a GABS winning beer, a 2 million dollar plus new brewery/taproom to build and have just come back from the UK after being invited over to make some beer in a five-storey Victorian era brewery that dates back 170 years. It’s mental when I put that in words, but my favourite saying is ‘Once you can no longer touch the bottom, the depth of the water doesn’t matter’.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND BOOZY FRUIT?

We were in the brewery on a stinking hot Adelaide day. 38 plus with a kiln-like dryness. The brew crew were hard at it and anyone who has been to our brewery will know our equipment is very manual. We are talking manual mash in and out, lugging grain and hoses around so they were hot (and funky smelling). Being the good units we are Jase and I went a grabbed a bunch of Frosty Fruits for the team. They have always been a fave of mine and it was while devouring them we thought how well the flavours would work in a beer. At the time we were thinking about GABS, as the People’s Choice is a trophy we had coveted for a while. Since our first accidental good showing with Golden Stout Time we have wanted to jag it. To do so we thought we needed that hype style combined with nostalgic fun that GABS is known for. So a NEIPA meets ice-block was our weapon to try and hit that brief.

WHAT DID THE WIN MEAN FOR YOU? A lot. As I mentioned earlier, we had wanted it since we did well with Golden Stout Time. One reason is because it’s a people’s choice vote. At the end of the day, we make beer for people to enjoy so to have them not only enjoy it, but give it a vote means the world to us. Another is that as a business, it gets you out there nationally and internationally. If people hadn’t heard of us before, they are more likely to have now. Lastly is because we really enjoy the GABS Festival Beer idea. It gives us a chance to really swing hard and on occasion push what brewing and beer is. Even if a beer is an opinion divider (our Thai Green Curry beer being a classic example), people still give it a go and appreciate what’s being attempted.

WILL BOOZY FRUIT RISE AGAIN?

Again?? That would assume that it fell away. As it stands we can’t keep up and we brew it when we can without affecting other core range beers. It filled half our brewery for three months after the win and it still wasn’t enough. If people keep drinking it, and NEIPA’s more generally, I am sure it will it become core range (along with ‘The Hazing’ so you can stop emailing us…) in the new brewery. It will also mean cans which is exciting.

WHAT ARE YOU BREWING FOR US THIS YEAR?

We are making a beer where every grain has been consumed and passed through a civet, like the coffee. The civet only selects the finest grains and its digestive juices create a unique flavour profile. Jokes… but our beer is coffee related. We are making a stout designed to be drunk through a Tim Tam, the Tim Tam Slam. We are still working on exactly how to make it work, but we’ll see how it goes. That’s the joy in GABS beers. Have a go, ya mug!

In summary: Lager + Skateboards = Awesome. Quick math.

You’re probably ignoring cider and that’s fine, we all make mistakes. Rectify that with a LOBO. The apples in this were six years in the growing. Most businesses at this festival didn’t even exist while LOBO were out in the fields getting this prepped, and you’re gonna sleep on it? FOH.

LITTLE ALCHEMIST FUNK ADANI

Humanity is screaming towards fiery global warming death, while rich dudes stack bills, killing off native Australian ingredients in the process. Little Alchemist are highlighting those ingredients. Or, as the brewery says, it’s a beer “to give the Finger to some of the backward politics going on and ruining our country’s beauty and essence”. Sh*t yeah!

AUS HOMEBREWER OF THE YEAR THE BARRY

Barry Cranston brews rings around most brewers at this festival and he does it in his spare time like it’s no big deal. He was here in 2012 with a Brown Ale and it is still one of the best beers GABS has had. This is an all-Australian farmhouse-style beer, and Barry is an all-around legend (not in Brissy, sorry friends. Get Wolf of the Willows instead).

FULL POUR

WELDER’S DOG BRUT NOIR

Brut, (dried out using enzymes), sour, hoppy and aged on oak. Whatever it is, it sounds pretty great. It’s also being served still (no carbonation) which always rules. Even though it’s 9.8% you’ll want to get it in a glass pour to appreciate it… but get some water right after.

FLYING BRICK CIDER VIRGIN PADDOCK

This is a collaboration with Encompass, who provide opportunities for people with disabilities, disadvantages and those in a bit of a rough spot. It’s the first cider from their orchard. Good cider helps good people doing good things. I’m so mad at anyone who doesn’t get this.

MEET SOME OF O

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

AETHER BREWING

Two friends who had had enough of the fly in/fly out gas field lifestyle decided to follow their dreams instead. After brainstorming business plans and names (many of which were thrown into the ether as the idea was refined) they now have their very own brewpub in Milton, Brisbane. Aether turned heads at its first GABS with a bone marrow infused beer, however its regular range is no less interesting.

BALLISTIC BEER

In 2016, David Kitchen teamed up with brewer Lachy Crothers - who honed his skills and passion for all styles of beer with stints at Gage Roads and London’s Camden Town Brewery - to create a brewery determined to make the highest quality beer, loaded with flavour. While they often have a different approach to what that means, the end result is a mix of old and new, and very, very good.

BLACK HOPS BREWING CO

Black Hops Brewing started as three mates making beer and sharing everything they learned along the way. In 2014, Dan, Eddie and Govs made their first beer, the Eggnog Stout, after discussing the concept at the pub. That led them to opening up a brewery and taproom in Burleigh Heads in 2016, and being awarded Australia’s Champion Small Brewer at the 2018 AIBA Awards.

BRISBANE BREWING CO

Venture down a particular West End laneway in Brisbane and escape the busy city at this industrial-meets-artisan brewpub.Drinkers are encouraged to take a tour through the methods of producing their craft beer range. Brisbane Brewing Co take a lot of pride in offering the freshest beer possible.

BROUHAHA BREWING CO

Located on the sunny Sunshine Coast, Brouhaha launched in 2016 with a former Beavertown (UK) brewer at its helm. It soon picked up gold for its Strawberry Rhubarb Sour at the “Indies” beer awards and attention from beer lovers around Australia.

FELONS BREWING CO

Felons opened in 2018 with a large brewery and hospitality space right underneath Story Bridge on the banks of the Brisbane River. It was so successful that it kept running out of beer! That’s in big part to the crew behind it, who love rolling up the doors each day, with a smile on the dials, to brew great balanced beer for Brisbane and those who love to visit.

GREEN BEACON BREWING CO

Opened in 2013 by a pair of schoolmates who, when traveling around the world, enjoyed the sense of community that locally owned business can bring to an area. They chose to open in Teneriffe (QLD) because the suburb was the vibrant heart of Brisbane’s urban renewal. Green Beacon was the Champion Australian Small Brewery at the AIBA awards in 2017, and Champion Medium Brewery in 2018.

HEMINGWAY’S BREWERY

Hemingway’s began in Port Douglas, overlooking the harbour. The success of the brewpub saw another, much larger operation opening in Cairns. Now it is slowly taking over Far North Queensland with its quality beer that is really from up there.

LAND & SEA BREWERY - NOOSA BEER CO

46

Noosa’s first craft brewery, Land & Sea is passionate about sustainability, the local environment and using that to create excellent beer. They tell us the beers are best enjoyed as part of your perfect lifestyle; journeying, adventuring and leaving just a little bit up to chance.

NEWSTEAD BREWING CO

Newstead started out modestly with a cosy-yet-industrial brewpub in the inner Brisbane suburb from which it takes its name. Recently it expanded to a second, larger brewery and bar just a stone’s throw from the Castlemaine Perkins XXXX plant. They aren’t quite Queensland’s number one-selling beer yet, but out of all the small players they are certainly setting themselves up for a good go.

RANGE BREWING CO

With a philosophy of ‘forever exploring, forever evolving’, this small batch brewery out of Newstead (Brisbane) has already earned a reputation for pushing boundaries since opening in 2018. Instead of launching with a core range of beers, they focussed on core styles - hoppy, dark and sour - and continue to develop each of those styles with every batch they brew.

REVEL BREWING CO

This new brewery was launched late in 2017 by a group of Bulimba locals who wanted to bring independent back to the area. Taking the mantra ‘good people drink good beer’ they hit the ground running, not only making good beer but also cider from locally sourced apples.

SEA LEGS BREWING CO

Just metres from the iconic Story Bridge at Kangaroo Point (Brisbane), Sea Legs is the product of a group of engineering mates who spent over three years searching for the perfect brewery space. Expect a core range of classic styles, while experimental styles will be a regular feature on its seasonal and limited beer schedule.

SLIPSTREAM BREWING

Slipstream Brewing Company is all about hop forward styles. One of the newest breweries on the scene, it opened the doors to its family friendly Brisbane venue in late August 2017. Pay a visit and expect fresh, vibrant beer, food trucks and of course, good times.

SOAPBOX BEER

Soapbox Beer is an independent, inner-city brewery that’s just opened in late 2018. The team love to brew fresh, flavoursome and interesting beers that speak to their customers. It’s all about having a soapbox to share your opinion… and your beers.

SUNSHINE COAST CIDER

Focussing on traditional methods, Sunshine Coast Cider uses 100% freshly pressed apple juice from the Granite Belt region. Try their medal winning Apple Cider, Cloudy Perry or Brut+ Cider made in a champagne style.

THE WELDER’S DOG

The Welders Dog are found in Armidale in the New England region of New South Wales. It launched in 2017 and is already winning favour, not only for its beer, but also for its bright purple pea-flower lemonade, and naturally fermented ginger beer. Founders Tom, Dan and Phil are not only motivated by their own love of drinks, but also making you happy. So why not let them delight you with a beer?

BRISBANE EXHIBITORS

MOFFAT BEACH BREWING CO

Winner of the 2018 Champion Small Brewery Award, Moffat Beach Brewing Co has come a long way since opening just three years earlier. Founders Matt and Shaz Wilson strive to produce quality beers, using local ingredients and operating in an ethical and environmentally friendly fashion. Located just metres from the eponymous beach, this little operation is making big waves in the brewing community.

MELBOURNE EXHIBITORS

MEET SOME OF O

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

BONEHEAD BREWING

Bonehead can be found in the backstreets of Kensington, Melbourne. Founded by two friends, it’s the culmination of over a decade of homebrewing. Its beers are loosely based on classic Belgian and Czech styles but with additions of ingredients such as prickly pear, Australian native herbs, and maple.

CO-CONSPIRATORS BREWING CO

Co-Conspirators are four people, two couples, and one conspiracy to make great beer. After meeting at Melbourne homebrew club, the Merri Mashers, and winning homebrew competitions over the years, they launched their own company. Its NEIPA, The Matriarch, polled in the GABS Hottest 100 for the past two years.

DAINTON BREWING

A family owned business, Dainton is the product of Dan Dainton and his dad Kev. Dan has brewed at places like Holgate and Melbourne’s James Squire brewpub, before heading out on his own. The Carrum Downs based brewpub and production brewery is a regular medal and trophy winner, and its Cherrywood Smoked Rye Baltic Porter was Champion Beer at the Australian Craft Beer Awards in 2017.

DEEDS BREWING

Deeds Brewing Co is based in Glen Iris and are proud to be independent. Brewing nomadically since 2013, and after a few hurdles the brewery was finally launched in 2019. It’s become known for its hazy-style hoppy beers and now that the brewery is up and running, expect big things.

DOLLAR BILL BREWING

Based in Ballarat (VIC), Dollar Bill is focussed on brewing and blending. Inspired by the world’s finest winemakers and brewers, they love to create libations that intrigue, ageing their beverages in ex-wine oak barrels with wild yeasts and mixed cultures, before adding locally sourced fruit and hops. Time is essential, as the barrel ageing process creates flavours that are impossible to create any other way.

FLYING BRICK CIDER

The black cockatoo has the local nickname, the Flying Brick. They are loved for their happy, playful, and cheeky disposition, and local legend says that if a flock flies overhead you are blessed with good luck. If you get Flying Brick Cider Co’s traditionally made, 100% juice cider in your glass, we are sure there will be good luck in that too.

FOREIGNER BREWING CO

There aren’t many breweries in Australia capable of doing classic Czech Pilsners as well as Foreigner. Hiding out in an industrial lot in Brunswick (VIC), it might not be on too many radars but pay a visit, and you’ll understand why they have a loyal following. The Pilsners are world class, and if you want something a bit more modern, its IPAs and Pales are just as good.

FURY & SON

Fury (the dad) & Son (the umm, son), are based in Keilor Park in Melbourne’s west. The brewery and attached bar pumps out a great core range of styles and interesting seasonals. They tell us the father/son bond has been strengthened by their mutual passion and love of good quality beer. If you want to know why they call him Fury, apparently you should just ask... if you are brave enough.

FUTURE MOUNTAIN BREWING & BLENDING Opening in Reservoir just this year, Future Mountain aims to create Farmhouse inspired, mixed fermentation and barrel aged beers using traditional methods and innovative techniques. They have a particular focus on drinkability, using different yeasts and cultures to produce sour beers of clean and balanced acidity.

GRAND RIDGE BREWERY

62

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019, Grand Ridge is one of the pioneers of Australian craft brewing. This 100% family owned operation is housed in an old butter factory in Mirboo North (VIC) and has the mission to always make the best beer in the world. With a love for the environment as well as beer, the majority of its power is solar and ensure all of their packaging is fully recyclable.

HOP NATION

Hop Nation is a small brewery based just by the river in Melbourne’s Footscray. It has come to national attention for its hoppy beers such as Jedi Juice (#9 in GABS H100 2018), but being ex-winemakers its founders Duncan Gibson and Sam Hambour are increasingly tinkering with barrels, sours and even going back to wine under the “Site Fermentation Project” brand.

IMPI BREWERS

Opened in 2017, Impi bring South African flair to the West Australian beer scene. The family owned brewery is about creating beers with scientific precision, and passion.

KING RIVER BREWING

King River Brewing is family owned and operated, producing high quality, small batch beer at its taproom in King Valley (VIC). Lush gardens, and wood fired pizza make it a popular tourist destination. Fresh beer is a delicious bonus.

MR BANKS BREWING CO

The brewery is named after the brewer’s dog, who is named after Adam Banks from the movie, the Mighty Ducks. An unusual story backed up by exciting beers. You can find it in Seaford (VIC) where the brewery specialises in tasty hop-forward beers, along with some classic styles.

RED HILL BREWERY

Tucked away amidst its own hop garden and the beautiful scenery of the Mornington Peninsula, Red Hill has been making quality beer since 2005. Founded by Karen and David Golding, it’s known for well crafted beer that is always consistent. Highlights include a crisp, snappy Pilsner; a seasonal wet hop ale (which you can help make by picking hops at the brewery), and the crowd favourite Scotch Ale.

SAILORS GRAVE BREWING

Sailors Grave is a husband and wife team who have built a massive reputation out of their diminutive coastal brewhouse. Its beers are esoteric, experimental and a ton of fun; you can expect all foraged flowers and herbs, fruit, barrels and plenty of soured and farmhouse styles. Keep an eye out for the colourful cans as well - the artwork is some of the best around.

TEMPLE BREWING

Temple Brewing Co has been doing its thing in Brunswick East since 2011. It’s seen changes over the years but the commitment and devotion to making great beer out of the brewhouse has never wavered. Plus it has a bloody nice beer garden.

THREE GREENS BREWING

Three Greens is three blokes with a love of planes making great beer. Three greens is the term for everything being ok when landing a commercial plane, and every beer they make has the green lights from the team.

WESTSIDE ALE WORKS

Inspired by the West Coast of the USA, and its big hop forward IPAs, Westside Ale Works is a small one-man operation in South Melbourne. Owner, Casey Wagner, is an American immigrant who wanted to bring a taste of San Diego into Melbourne. The brewpub is a relaxed, easy going affair, where it’s likely Casey is behind the bar and you can reach out and touch the tanks.

MELBOURNE EXHIBITORS

HOLGATE BREWHOUSE

Founded by Paul and Tash Holgate in 1999, Holgate have been at the forefront of Australia’s brewing movement for 20 years. After a major expansion of their brewery in Woodend (an hour out of Melbourne), the brewer is set for exciting times ahead, building on its range of core beers (including fan and critic favourite ‘Temptress’ porter), and an increasing number of sour and barrel aged styles.

MEET SOME OF O

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

4 PINES BREWING CO

4 Pines is a product of a father and son, and a day’s surfing at Manly beach. They wondered why they couldn’t get a good beer near the beach so decided to change that. Launching 2008 it now has two sites, a slew of limited releases and competition winning beers, and in 2017 announced their sale to AB InBev - must’ve been a bloody good surf.

AUSTRALIAN BREWERY

Australian Brewery are market leaders. It was the first small Australian brewery to put its beer into cans, and one of the few to stamp the ‘packaged on’ and ‘best before’ dates on its beers. Since launching in 2010, it’s won a slew of medals, and consistently punch above their weight in international markets.

BOUNTY HUNTER BREWING

Taking inspiration from the things they love most: cinema, gaming, comics and heavy metal, Bounty Hunter beers are renowned not only for their quality, but for their incredible label artwork and pop culture references.

EDEN BREWERY

Eden Brewery is built on the belief that breweries should make a difference to the local and global community. It donates 10% of all profit to Oxfam to help provide clean drinking water to those that need it, and the brewery is run on 100% renewable energy. Its beers lean towards the Euro classics, such as Wit and Pilsner, but always with a fresh take.

ENDEAVOUR BREWING CO

Started in 2010, Endeavour has been quietly doing its thing in its own way until recently when the team launched their very own brew pub in Sydney’s Rocks District. They are already planning expansion and have used crowdfunded equity offers to get there. A lot of fans, for good reason.

FRENCHIE’S BISTRO & BREWERY

Founded by a chef and a brewer in 2017, Frenchies is all about the celebration of food, drink and bistronomie culture on plate and in glass. With a French Bulldog for a logo, the team also celebrates French brewing culture with a range of Bière de Gardes (a French farmhouse style) as well as new world, and other Euro influenced offerings.

HILLBILLY CIDER

Follow the Hillbilly trail to the beautiful orchards of Bilpin, Blue Mountains bordered by World Heritage National Parks and you’ll find Hillbilly Cider. With over 20 years wine and cider making experience under his belt Cidermaker Shane McLaughlin has adapted techniques from time spent in the cider regions around the world including Normandy, Hereford and Somerset “The land of scrumpy”.

HOPE BREWERY

2016’s Champion Small Brewery at the AIBA awards, Hope Estate began on a winery in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country. It is more than a side project though, and you’ll find an exciting range of beer. Everything the team turns its hand to, from the classic, to the hoppy to the sour, is well made and delicious.

HOPSTERS CO-OPERATIVE BREWERY

Hopsters is Australia’s very first ‘cooperative’ brewery - a democratically run, member owned and operated brewing operation based in Sydney’s inner west. Members can get involved in all aspects of the cooperative, from taking a seat on the Board of Directors through to providing recipes for the beers they brew.

NEW ENGLAND BREWING CO

A small town brewery in Uralla, New England are one of the few breweries in Australia to use open fermentation. This allows flexibility with harvesting and re-using its house yeasts, while also creating unique fermentation characters. It launched in 2012 and the range comprises of big hoppy beers, clean lagers and the occasional Belgian speciality beer.

PHILTER BREWING

68

Philter focuses on making great sessionable beer that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Head Brewer Sam Füss was one of Australia’s first female brewers and boasts over 16 years of brewing experience with Little Creatures and Young Henry’s. After only four months on the market, Philter’s XPA was crowned Australia’s Champion Pale at the CBIA Awards. Perhaps more treasured though was their award for The Most Bogan Nascar Branding Award. That’s Philter Brewing: great beer without the bullshit.

STONE DOG MEADERY

Stone Dog are a nano meadery specializing in small batch meads and braggots designed to showcase ‘single origin’ honey varieties and create tastes you will find nowhere else. Steve and Lavender Kirby craft each batch by hand - 250 litres at a time - using only the highest quality Australian honey, fruits, spices and more, all carefully selected to complement the hard work of the Honey Bee.

SYDNEY BREWERY

Sydney Brewery has been doing its thing for over a decade. Its philosophy is to only use the very best ingredients and to brew with thoughtful care. They want to make sure you’ve got the best, freshest, and tastiest beer in your hands.

THE COASTAL BREWING CO

David and Helen Black, the husband and wife team behind Coastal Brewing launched the brewery in 2017. They are all about locality and even link each beer name to the natural beauty of the Great Lakes and Manning Valley area. That’s all reflected in the breweries philosophy: LIFE - Local, Independent, Fresh, Everytime. It is a small operation but the beer is increasingly finding its way around NSW.

THE GRIFTER BREWING CO

Matt, Glenn & Trent started The Grifter Brewing Co in 2012 to take their home brews to a wider audience. The production brewery and eclectic tasting bar in the heart of Marrickville, has become a stalwart in the Sydney brewing scene as they continue to focus on making unique beers that remain highly drinkable.

THE LORD NELSON BREWERY HOTEL

Australia’s oldest pub brewery, The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel is located in Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct. The current custodians took over in 1986 and set about restoring the brewery and hotel to its former glory. In keeping with the history, they have designed their beers in the style of the traditional English Ale, with no sugar and lots of flavour.

WAYWARD BREWING CO

Starting out in 2012 as a nomadic brewer, Wayward now has a permanent home in Sydney’s Inner West. Wayward likes to say it’s brewing ‘wayward beers for wayward people’ and its range pays homage to classic European styles while creating beers with a distinctly Wayward twist. It’s about the ethos of travellers, a desire to see round the corner, and taking the road less travelled.

WILLIE THE BOATMAN

Willie the Boatman has a strong focus on local community and good beer. This small brewery in Sydney’s inner west hit the news in 2015 for their beer brewed as an homage to their local MP, Anthony Albanese (aka Albo). Albo has been a big supporter of his local breweries and the beer is still part of the brewery’s core range.

YULLI’S BREWS Yulli’s Brews is a small brewing company started in 2014 by James Harvey and Karl Cooney in Sydney. It was born out of Yulli’s restaurant in Surrey Hills which is known for its vegetarian food and craft beer.
