With so many of the country’s best breweries and cideries exhibiting at GABS, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore the world of craft beer and cider, discover new favourites, sample limited releases, and chat to the folks behind the brews. You can buy tasters from every stand, or if you find something you like, go for a full pour of your Souvenir Festival Glass. Many stands will be running games, activities and competitions as part of the fun. Check out the venue map and exhibitor list on page 34.

FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS

Every year, GABS puts the call out to the industry to brew something new for the festival. In 2018, almost 90 different brewers and cidermakers around New Zealand and Australia have answered that call and created something just for you. For those brewers, it’s an opportunity to be creative, to push boundaries, and to showcase their talents. Check out the tasting notes from page 27, grab a tasting paddle, and away you go! Please note that there is a limited allocation of each Festival Beer & Cider for each session. If we run out of a beer or cider in the first session, it will be back for the next session. The moral of the story is… if there’s something you absolutely want to try, try it first.

Hosted by the always affable Professor Pilsner (Pete Mitcham of Australian Brews News), the GABS Craft College offers the opportunity to learn more about beer and cider through a series of free seminars and discussions. Perennial GABS favourite house band, The Ale Capones, are back and will be working the crowd like no one else can with their trademark tunes and humour. Don’t miss their big finale toward the end of the session with a hall-wide singalong of Bohemian Rhapsody!

Love beer and food? Well, the Ariston Food & Drink Experience is the place to be. With more than 15 years of beery experience, Kirrily Waldhorn (aka the Beer Diva), will be your tour guide on a gastronomic adventure at Ariston Food & Drink Experience. Enjoy free, fun-filled seminars by leading New Zealand and international chefs. Learn how to pair beer, cider and food from the best, be prepared to roll up your sleeves, and even get blindfolded. Entry is on a strictly first come, first ‘served’ basis, so get in fast! For more info, turn to page 18.

JAMESON CASKMATES BOILERMAKER BAR

Jameson Caskmates is an example of what can happen when you let curiosity and collaboration get the better of you. Born from a collaboration between Jameson’s head distiller and the head brewer of Cork’s Franciscan Well Brewery, Jameson Caskmates is a head-turning, modern Irish whiskey that has taken the craft beer world by storm. Hop along to the Jameson Caskmates Bar at GABS to hear more about the unique story, explore crafty beer and whiskey concoctions, and get a New Zealand exclusive preview of the newest Jameson Caskmates Edition.

COOPERS FESTIVAL GLASS

On arrival at GABS, you’ll be given a classic beer tulip souvenir glass (made from one of the most glass-like plastics). At some point you’ll certainly find a favourite beer or cider. Rinse your Coopers Festival Glass and order a fill at the Container Bars or at the Liquorland Marketplace stands. Please hang on to your glass as you will only receive one (and it’s a great souvenir).

Back by popular demand! After a year’s hiatus, the GABS Silent Disco will be making a triumphant return. Grab your headphones, choose your channel (rock or pop d-floor classics) and dance like nobody’s watching. But of course, they all are. Please note the Silent Disco will only open for the last two hours of each session.

Free water will be available at stations throughout the festival hall, or from each exhibitor bar. Remember to keep hydrated to make sure you can go the distance. And if you’re not into beer or cider, that’s fine. We won’t hold it against you. Wine is available from Container Bar B. Soft drinks, water and other non-alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase at some of the food stalls.

Sure there are a lot of critically acclaimed beer and cider awards out there, but as many a brewer has said: “to win the GABS People’s Choice is the greatest honour one could receive, to know that my beer has won the hearts and palates of the people is reward for a lifetime”*. Many a fine beer has won the People’s Choice, including Yeastie Boys’ Gunnamatta, La Sirene’s Praline, Bacchus Brewing’s Peanut Brittle Gose and Behemoth’s Chocolate Fish.

NEW ZEALAND’S BIGGEST CRAFT BEER CELEBRATION

Now in its second year, the GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers poll shines a powerful spotlight on the trends, brands and breweries shaping the booming craft beer industry. Based on the hugely popular Aussie poll, the 2017 edition saw thousands of craft beer lovers vote for their five favourite craft beers of the year, then celebrate the live countdown on Saturday 3 February.

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR PANHEAD

After taking out the inaugural GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers poll, Upper Hutt brewery Panhead Custom Ales went back to back in the 2017 edition with its hugely popular ‘Supercharger’ APA (American Pale Ale).

GARAGE PROJECT DOMINATES

Completing the podium were two beers from Wellington’s Garage Project. In second place was ‘Death From Above’, a South-East Asian inspired American IPA (India Pale Ale) which the brewery recently announced would be discontinued. Maintaining its hold on third position was ‘Pernicious Weed’, an 8% ABV Double IPA. In total, the prolific brewer was the most dominant in the list with an impressive 19 Garage Project beers featured.

GABS FESTIVAL BEERS NEW & DIVERSE Also prominent in the list were Auckland-based brewers Behemoth (13 beers) and 8 Wired (10 beers). Amongst those were Behemoth’s ‘Chocolate Fish’ Milk Stout and 8 Wired’s ‘Cosmic Chaos’ Kettle Sour, which along with ‘Royal Tanninbomb’ from Yeastie Boys (who recently moved its brewing operations from Invercargill to Auckland), were brewed especially for GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest as a ‘Festival Beer’, then packaged and sold exclusively after the festival at Liquorland as part of a GABS Festival Beer Mixed Six Pack. In total, seven beers on the list started their journey as a GABS Festival Beer, including ‘Jungle Boogie’ from Funk Estate in Mount Maunganui. The Blood Orange Sour Ale was also the biggest climber on the list, moving up 71 places from last year’s results to secure 16th position this year.

Breaking into the top ten for the first time was Liberty Brewing Co (Helensville) with its distinctive ‘Citra’ Double IPA in 8th and ‘The Kush’ IPA in 7th, which was the first of 28 beers on the list brewed for the first time in 2017. GABS Co-Founder Steve Jeffares said “It’s fantastic to see so many new beers making the list. For us, this illustrates the incredible vibrancy of the Kiwi beer scene”. Jeffares also remarked on the diverse beer styles represented in the list in comparison to its Australian counterpart. “In this year’s Aussie list, we saw hoppy styles such as Pale Ales and IPAs dominate with 75% of beers being hop-driven. While that trend is still strong in New Zealand, it’s very rewarding to see Kiwi beer lovers also voting in numbers for Sours, Stouts, Goses and other more experimental beers. There are some hugely creative beers being made all across New Zealand and it’s obvious they’re striking the right chord”.

ON TREND

With a name derived from the German ‘lagern’, which means ‘to store’, lagers come in all shapes and sizes, buts it’s the pale lagers first perfected by Czech and German brewers that dominate the planet. Brewed with top-fermenting, unobtrusive yeast strains, classic lagers deliver smooth, sweet, grainy malts with a touch of floral, spicy or herbal hops and a gentle dry finish.

Described by Napoleon’s soldiers as the Champagne of the North, the highly effervescent Berliner Weisse is a low alcohol, soured affair brewed with a high proportion of wheat. They can vary from the lightly tart to the mouth puckering, with fruit and other adjuncts often added along the way.

LAGER

PALE ALE While the style originated in England, contemporary pale ales are more commonly associated with America’s craft beer revolution. Both there and in New Zealand, brewers typically take a hop forward approach, creating tropical, pine or citrus aromas and flavours, balanced by a touch of malt sweetness and varying degrees of bitterness.

IPA Historically, India Pale Ale is closely tied to the time when the British Empire dominated the planet; today, it connotes the supremacy of hops in modern brewing. Like pale ales on steroids, with hop character, bitterness and alcohol content all ratcheted up, IPAs are typically a showcase for hops (and more hops) with a pungent, tropical or piney bent.

STOUT Long ago, stout simply referred to a stronger version of any beer, but the beer we know today grew from “stout porter”, a heavier version of the dark beer style so popular in 18th and 19th century England. Typically, a stout is a journey into roasted, chocolate and coffee flavours, but you’ll find decadent imperial versions and, particularly at GABS, sweet stouts too.

THE CLASSICS

BERLINER WEISSE

GOSE Possibly the most mispronounced, and frequently punned, beer style to gain popularity on these shores (try ‘goes-uh’), this wheat-based beer is traditionally brewed with salt, coriander and souring bacteria. Originating in the German town of Goslar and once almost lost to the history books, today it’s often a base upon which brewers layer whatever tart fruits take their fancy.

NEW ENGLAND IPA Oft derided as poorly brewed or overhyped, New England IPAs have taken the craft beer world by storm and can involve highly technical brewing processes. Known for their breakfast juice like qualities and hazy / murky appearance, they’re loaded with the fruitiest hops obtainable, are low in bitterness and need to be consumed fresh as.

WOOD AGED BEER Once upon a time, all beer would have been stored and transported in wooden barrels but, today, beer’s journey to your glass takes place mainly in stainless steel. Barrels now play different roles: imparting oak character or hints of the barrel’s previous resident (wine, spirits) on a beer; as a home for souring bacteria; or to allow beers, such as imperial stouts or barley wines, to gently oxidise.

While most breweries avoid contaminating their beer during fermentation, some encourage it. Wild beers are about allowing natural yeast and bacteria to add often funky complexities, whether by using coolships or other open vessels to allow nature to handle fermentation or introducing such elements via barrels. They can vary greatly, with wild yeast strains and different bugs creating qualities from earthy or acidic to fruity or barnyard like and more besides.

THE BEST OF THE FEST Many a fine beer has won the GABS People’s Choice Festival Beer, including Yeastie Boys’ Gunnamatta, La Sirene’s Praline, and Bacchus Brewing’s Peanut Brittle Gose. In 2017, Behemoth Brewing Co took the field by storm with it’s nostalgic Milk Stout ‘Chocolate Fish’. We chat with Behemoth founder Andrew Childs about what the win meant for the team.

TELL US ABOUT BEHEMOTH BREWING CO?

I started Behemoth Brewing about five years ago. I always wanted to focus of big, bold flavoured beers. I wanted it to be all about flavour and fun. So all our beers are pretty big on flavour and big on fun. We have contract brewed around New Zealand but also have a brewpub in the works as we speak. It’s been a crazy ride so far but we are just looking to do more and more fun beers as much as possible.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND CHOCOLATE FISH?

Well in New Zealand, the Chocolate Fish is a reward for a job well done. We have our Triple Chocolate Milk Stout as a staple so we thought we could add raspberries to this to make it more like a Chocolate Fish and it turned out pretty well.

WHAT DID THE WIN MEAN FOR YOU?

It really meant that we made a beer that people really liked. We are pretty proud of that. It also cemented that we are not just a hoppy beer brewery (although we do that a lot!) and also gives us the confidence to be able to play with fun dark beer styles in the future.

HAVE YOU CONTINUED TO MAKE THE BEER?

No we have not, but we plan to again some time, maybe even an Imperial version of it.

WHAT ARE YOU BREWING FOR US THIS YEAR?

Mocha Madness, a Chocolate and Coffee Imperial Milk Stout. At 8% ABV, it’s a big milk stout with cold brew coffee from our mates at Harpoon, and Dutch cocoa powder. It really is like a mocha in beer form. Our whole team are big on coffee and obviously big on beer so we enjoy blending the two as often as possible.

Some are made in a traditional style, perhaps with a twist, while others are highly creative. With so many Festival Beers & Ciders on offer at GABS, sampling is the name of the game. Here’s how to get started...

Your first step is to take a look at the Official Guide you’re given on arrival, or download the GABS 2018 App, to check out the 86 Festival Beers & Ciders made exclusively for the event. We’ve marked each beer and cider with our ‘traffic light’ indicators (Easier Drinking / Stepping Up / Adventurous) to give you some guidance on what might suit your tastes. More info on this on Page 22.

Your second step is to create a ‘Tasting Paddle’. We’ll have loads of these wooden paddles at the festival, and they allow you to get five different 85mL tasters from a Container Bar section in one hit (there are two containers divided into sections). You can buy these 85mL tasters individually for $2.50 each, or a paddle of five for $11.50 - that’s a $1 saving - bonus!

Once you know what you want, use the chalk provided (again, it’s everywhere) to mark down the Festival Beer or Cider numbers on the paddle. Please keep each Tasting Paddle to one Container Bar section at a time to speed up service. Then just take it to the appropriate Container Bar, hand it to the bartender, and they’ll pour that bad boy for you.

With a Stout base, Alibi added dark muscovado sugar, oranges, and a sugar orange reduction; before ageing it all in bourbon barrels. It’s an Old Fashioned, in beer form.

MEET SOME OF OUR EXHIBITORS 8 WIRED BREWING CO (AUK) Based in Warkworth, 8 Wired make a range of bold new world styles along with one of the largest barrel ageing programs in the Southern Hemisphere. 8 Wired excels at brewing a range of beers; from fresh and hop-forward, to aged and sour. Trying their beers, it’s no surprise that 8 Wired have been NZ’s Champion Brewer in the past.

BACH BREWING CO (AUK) Auckland based Bach have a passion for brewing tasty beers inspired by the New Zealand icon of escape, freedom and good times - the classic Kiwi Bach. Founder and head brewer Craig Cooper started his journey at the former Limburg Beer Company in Hastings, and after a stint working overseas, returned home to revive his famous beers under the Bach brand.

DEEP CREEK BREWING CO (AUK) 2017 AIBA Champion Small International Brewery winner, Deep Creek is based in Silverdale, north Auckland, and specialise in brewing ‘flavour fuelled beers’. Aside from the permanent range, Deep Creek releases monthly brews under its three projects of Lupulin Effect (IPAs), Steam Funk (funky sours), Nero (dark beers). Also known for the infamous Hoppy McHopface hop oil DIPA using steam distilled fresh hop oil.

EMERSON’S BREWERY (OTA) With a commitment to producing fresh, naturally carbonated beers full of natural flavour, Emerson’s are an icon of NZ craft brewing. The Dunedin based brewery, now owned by Lion, combine fidelity with style, aroma, and flavour. Since foundation in 1992 they have won numerous medals for their beers and the small team are enthusiastic about both their core range and their limited release experimental beers.

EPIC BEER (AUK) Epic has been nailing hop forward IPAs in New Zealand since before your favourite brewer even knew what a hop was. Founder Luke Nicholas has been called a ‘one trick pony’ for his love of IPAs but when he brews one as good as Hop Zombie, why would anyone complain? For Epic, it’s all about celebrating the Epic journeys everyone takes to get to reach NZ - from the canoes of the first peoples to the tourists by the planeload.

FORTUNE FAVOURS BEER (WGN) Sometimes you just have to take the leap. Shannon Thorpe took the leap in 2016. Tired of working for other brewers, Shannon decided it was time to venture out on his own. Teaming up with Wellington hospitality veterans Andrew Williams and Jamie Williams, and award-winning brewer Dale Cooper, together they formed Fortune Favours. With a new brewpub housed in a restored industrial building amongst the revived Leeds Street precinct, Fortune Favours beers are fresh, fun and innovative. Take the leap and try something new.

HALLERTAU BREWERY (AUK) Named as a tribute to the Bavarian Hallertau region, famed for its hops, Hallertau is a bit more esoteric than the German name suggests. Founders Stephen and Hayley Plowman say they have veered off into ‘exuberant Westie mode via their fearlessly unique and smartly executed brews’. They have long championed vibrant flavour and quality ingredients over commercial viability. And they are damned good at it too.


Kereru Brewing Co brews British and European style craft beers made with the finest New Zealandgrown ingredients available, including Gladfield malts, Nelson hops, and many more ingredients that celebrate the marvellous qualities and flavours which are part of the local landscape.

LAKEMAN BREWING (WKO) Established in 2013, Lakeman is based on a farm just outside of Taupo. They use fresh water from the lake catchment, and have won a number of bronze, silver and golds over the last few years.

KERERU BREWING COMPANY (WGN)

Joseph Wood, founder of Liberty with his wife Christina, was a drinker frustrated by lack of choice in his part of the world (West Auckland) so began brewing his own. After becoming such a good customer of online homebrew store Liberty Brewing, the owners eventually sold him the business. In 2009 he started brewing under the brand as a form of marketing, but soon demand for his beer was so great that Liberty Brewing became what it is now; one of NZ’s best breweries.

MYTHICA BREWING (AUK) Mythica is a small, 350 litre, brewhouse on Auckland’s North Shore. It specialises in small batch, unique beers with fantasy and mythology themes. From names such as Succubus and Incubus, to the classic fantasy artwork of winged beasts on the labels.

PANHEAD CUSTOM ALES (WGN) Mike Neilson, founder and brewer at Panhead, combines his love of cars, bikes and beer in both his brewery and all of their branding. Mike describes himself as a bit of a bogan, but he’s a bogan that brews award-winning beers and has plans to make Panhead one of the biggest craft breweries in NZ. In 2016 it was sold to Lion, but Mike is still at the wheel making beer that for the last two years has topped the GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers.

SWEAT SHOP BREW KITCHEN (AUK) Parked up at Seven Sale Street is where you’ll find Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen. The brewery features rotating taps pouring premium hand-crafted beer brewed on site with the finest local and imported ingredients - you could say Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen is the hardest working bar in Auckland. This year at GABS 2018 you can expect to find Sweat Shop’s usual styles on tap, as well as a few speciality brews crafted especially for the event. Pouring fresh from the taps will be something clean, something fruity, something bitter and definitely something sour. So head on down to Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen at GABS 2018 and join us for a beer.

THE HERBALIST (AUK) What happens when a brewer and herbalist/naturopath team up? Something beautiful, that’s what. West Auckland based brewer Grant McKain and wife Rebecca Stenbeck (a qualified naturopath and herbal healer) have developed a range of unique and full-bodied herbal-infused beers. The Herbalist range includes a Manuka Ale, Nettle & Bilberry Lager, Rosemary & Liquorice Ale and Horny Goat Weed IPA.

KERERU BREWING COMPANY (NZ) SPECIALTY BEER (6.3% ABV) A malty ale that has been infused with dates and pomegranate. It was inspired by an ancient Egyptian beer recipe and Hathor, cow goddess of love, hospitality and (of course), beer.

STOCKADE BREW CO (AUS) WOOD-AGED BEER (5.5% ABV) Using Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels, Stockade aged their Rare Ink Session Stout to create a rich experience that remains easy drinking. Expect a light body rounded out by oak, vanilla and chocolate flavours.
