Golf Cart Owner Loses to Geico in Miami Ruling
I
n July 2016 a 16-year-old girl driving an E-Z-GO golf cart ran a stop sign and was hit by a car. The golf cart flipped and ejected all of the children passengers. The family of the driver, insured by a normal Geico
automobile insurance policy, attempted to file a claim and collect bodily injury damages not only for the driver, but for all of the passengers. Geico of course took the position that insurance coverage does not extend to the golf cart. The cart driver and injured passengers argued that Geico was in breach of contract.
The crux of the case was the dispute over the term “private passenger auto”. The family argued that a golf cart is indeed a “private passenger auto” and should be covered by their “auto” insurance policy. Geico argued that a “private passenger auto” is a vehicle that is safe and legal to drive and transport people on public roads. They also argued that a golf cart is different than a passenger auto because it lacks all the necessary safety equipment and automobile characteristics such as seatbelts, windshields, turn signals, vehicle identification numbers, brake lights and more. Ultimately, U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres sided with Geico because in all the language of the policy the term “auto” was linked to other terms that helped clarify the definition as being an automobile instead of a cart. Furthermore, the judge pointed out that under Florida Law the golf cart did not possess all the safety equipment it needed in order to be driving legally on public roads. As golf carts, NEVs and LSVs become a more common form of transportation, drivers need to take a closer look at their insurance policies. In a blink of an eye, a golf cart accident can cause financial ruin if the driver is without proper insurance. Golf Cart insurance includes personal injury and liability, so the driver is covered if they hurt themselves or others.

Mike H. a resident at Windsong Ranch in Prosper Texas said "We need a cart to be built around my paddle board.; We take our paddler board to THE LAGOON, it’s a 5-acre, tropicsinspired amenity, with clear Caribbean-like water and sandy beaches, right in our neighborhood. Going through the design process, picking out the hard to find matching colors off Mikes Paddle Board was something to be said. "You really want to build a cart in these colors, it would be easier and more of a financial decision to just get a new board" owner, Rob Wallach commented. Mike was still determined to move forward with the color combination. We showed him the Tower Top from MODZ that we would have to customize even further to accommodate cup holders and his 12' paddle board. Then he chose a Phantom Body for this 6-seater to be painted by LRM Customs in Fort Worth TX completely in Tiffany blue including all the trim. GCMAG: How did you get involved in the golf cart industry? BRET: Back in 2009, on behalf of the economy crashing, I was laid off from an engineering firm. My college roommate was working at a shop [golf shop] in Columbia [SC] and asked if I wanted to give it a try. After several months of doing it, my father and I decided to open up shop in Rock Hill, SC. GCMAG: When did your business really take off and why? BRET: About 5 years ago business really started picking up. Advertising and putting a word of mouth footprint in our community grew our business tremendously. Acquiring the major dealer lines [Yamaha, Club Cart, Star Carts] have been a big boost for our business as well. GCMAG: What are your future plans for growth and expansion? BRET: We intend to continue our current growth at our current location and are currently looking into the development of our second location. We are always diligently looking for
opportunities to grow our business through dealer networking and local community events. We tend to entertain all options available for future growth and expansion. GCMAG: Where do you see the future of the industry heading? BRET: This industry is growing rapidly with new technologies being presented frequently. I believe that the course our society is taking with the large number of residential neighborhoods in development, now and in the future, it is going to continue to make the golf cart industry stronger.

How to Install LED Roof Lights on a Golf Cart R
yan Fenters is the founder of the popular YouTube Channel called Fentertainment. Ryan creates DIY videos of, in his own words… “dedicated to making, painting, building, modifying and fixing things…” His golf-cart-related DIY videos are very informative, and we thought it would be a good idea to transcribe them for you for Golf Carting Magazine. In the latest edition, Ryan Fenters shows us step-by-step how to install Bluetooth LED lights to a golf cart top. RYAN FENTERS: What’s going on guys I’m Ryan Fenters and welcome back to the Fentertainment Channel. On today’s video we're going to be lighting up our roof with some Dream Color 5050 Addressable LED lights. Stay tuned.

So, let’s unpack the box… This is the LED strip lights we will be using to line the top of the cart. We have a standard 110 to 12-volt power adapter, we have two bags of supports, we have a connection wire, we have our LED light controller. The LED lights will plug into this harness and the 12-volt power will plug into the other side. We will download the App on our phone to be able to control the lights. What makes these lights a little bit different from all the other lights is that these are “addressable LEDs”. What does that mean? These do not just flash red to blue to green, but the
doityourself mount it on the side of the aluminum track. Or we can mount it on the side of the top itself.
lights actually chase each other throughout the strip. Supplied in the kit is a 110 to 12-volt wall charger; however, since this is a golf cart, we're not going to be using the wall charger, so we need to cut it. That being said we need to make sure it's going to be “tip positive” or “tip negative”. Reading on here it says that it is “tip positive” but yours may be different though, if you don't get the same exact kind. I'm going to show you how to check whether it's “tip positive” or “negative”. I'm going to go ahead and pull out about a foot of wire which is more than plenty and we're going to cut it off. We can disregard the wall plug as we will not use it. After you cut the wires, we need to strip them back. How do we know if it's tip positive or tip negative? We need to take a multimeter here and turn it down to the “continuity settings”. Once you press the two leads together, you'll hear a beep, and this is going to let us know whether this is “tip positive” or “tip negative”. Simply take one of the leads of your multimeter and stick it inside the tip and connect the other lead to the wire and see each one is making contact there. (You’ll hear the beep.) So, we know by doing this that the negative wire has the white stripe on it.
I'm first going to take some 91% isopropyl alcohol and use to really clean these side pieces as we don't want any contaminants on the top because the backing of the LED strips is what's going to make it stick to the top.
So off-camera I went ahead and soldered my leads and used heat shrink to go from the plug of the bazooka party bar G2 to the LED lights and also added some Velcro that will go
What makes our light kit easy to install is this Bazooka Party Bar G2 that I’ve already installed on this cart. It has a switch on for an accessory output and it comes with a harness the harness that is built into the main harness and once we hit the switch power it will power any accessory and that includes this LED light kit. We have a couple of different spots where we can mount the LED lights. We can mount this on the bevel, or we can 34 www.GolfCarting.com
doityourself between the LED Bluetooth controller and the frame. We will clean this off with a little bit of alcohol and stick the controller up there before we start laying our lights. We need to clean up these wires with a split loom and make it look nice and neat.
I went searching for the App on my phone and we're going to use one called LED Hue.
Once all the wires are in place and looking good, let’s get these LEDs mounted by just running them on the side of the lip here of the roof.
I have wires coming out of the controller going to the LEDs on the top and we just need to throw some wire loom on that and clean it up a little bit better. And I think it looks pretty good.
It is going to ask you to turn on your Bluetooth and once you have Bluetooth turned on you can select the option of SP110E. Once it is connected, it'll show a blue check mark we can hit “Enter”.
You have over a hundred different color and variations you can choose from. You can change the speed, change the brightness, you can set manual colors as well. My favorite setting is the red and blue chasing. I don't know why but I think it looks pretty cool. 36 www.GolfCarting.com

I didn't put any LED lights across the front of the cart. The one, five-meter roll just went around both sides and the back, which is great because we don't want any lights blinding us while we are driving. I like that these lights are “dream color”, meaning they are color chasing color rather than one color fading into another color. They are a little bit more expensive than the regular LED lights, but in my opinion, they're totally worth it and it's going to make the golf cart stand out.

BAZOOKA BPB24 GOLF CART SOUNDBAR Let’s talk about the Bazooka BPB24 Sound Bar. This super-sheik sound bar from Bazooka looks ultra-modern and features marine grade subwoofers and LED lights that illuminate the entire system. WET SOUND STEALTH 10 HD GOLF CART SOUNDBAR The last golf cart sound bar on our list is the Wet Sound Stealth 10 HD and is one of the better systems you can buy for your custom cart. The Stealth 10 HD really delivers excellent sound quality with a high-quality Class D amp. The system is durable and resistant to dust, shock and water splashes. The control panel, located on the back of the system, is well lit and manageable in low light conditions. The Stealth 10 comes with an AUX input so you can connect any of your external devices and you also have the option to connect via Bluetooth, pairing any smart device to the sound bar. The Stealth 10 HD has a fairly easy mounting system so installing it should not be overly difficult.

ASK THE MECHANIC Q: My battery cable ends seems to be melting or get extremely hot. What’s going on? A: This could be caused by the cables not being tightened properly and causing an arch and extreme heat. Make sure the connections are cleaned and your cables are tightened down making a solid connection with the battery posts. This could also be caused by faulty or improper gauge cables. You want to make sure these cables are a minimum of 6 gauge (which most stock carts come with), but we recommend 4 gauge or even 2 gauge, especially if you are going to modify anything with the electrical system in the cart. Q: What is the difference between a golf cart and a LSV (low speed vehicle)? A: The simple answer is LSVs are registered vehicles with the DMV. In some states an LSV is considered an automobile and must follow most the same rules and regulation as a typical car. LSVs must have the proper safety accessories such as 48 www.GolfCarting.com
headlights, turn signals, break lights, a horn, DOT approved windshields, seat belts and they must be able to reach a speed of 25mph. LSVs in some states can be driven on the roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. Please check the laws with your state’s DMV for exact information on rules and regulations. Q: My cart will only move a few feet and then stop. What should I check first? A: We get this question a lot and the answer could be many different things, but the most common cause is a bad or improperly connected forward / reverse switch. This problem happens very often, and the forward reverse switch is probably the most replaced part on a golf cart. They get used a lot and often times go bad or the connecter on back comes loose. It’s a simple fix and a very inexpensive part for most golf carts, so we recommend checking this first, making sure the connections are solid or replacing it all together.
