Summer

Skincare Switch As the weather warms up, it’s a good idea to switch up your skincare routine; rather than heavy, oil-rich creams and balms, go for lighter products designed to cleanse and moisturise the skin without over-drying. Micellar water can be used to remove makeup or as a gentle cleansing solution, and Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution is one of the best of the bunch. With fatty acid esters, similar to the skin’s own phospholipids, this micellar formula cleanses without stripping the skin’s natural pH levels, ensuring the skin’s top layer stays moisturised.

Don’t ditch your serum just because it’s Summer; Avéne’s Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum is lightweight yet packs a powerful punch. With a silky, gel-like texture, this little beauty soothes, hydrates and leaves skin gently glowing. Smooth onto the face, neck and décolletage and follow with a moisturiser (like Avéne’s Skin Recovery Cream).

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 5

Skip heavy layers of foundation and let skin breathe a little easier with La Roche Posay’s Uvidea XL SPF 50+ BB Cream. With shea butter for a hit of hydration, this lightweight flexible formula evens skintone and provides UVA and UVB protection.

How long have you been a pharmacist within the Blooms The Chemist Group?

What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a pharmacist?

I’ve been with Blooms The Chemist since 2014.

I always wanted to be a doctor and pharmacy was supposed to be my premed study. When I finished my Bachelor in Pharmacy degree in the Philippines, I applied to several medical schools and was accepted to two of the top med schools in the country, however in the Philippines we didn’t have HECS or any program that supports students financially. My parents didn’t have enough money to send me to med school but my dad, who was 57 at the time, said if I really wanted to go to med school, he would find a way. I knew that meant he would have to continue working and we would go into debt; I couldn’t do it to him and my family, so I decided to pursue my pharmacy profession. I’m glad I did or I wouldn’t have the life I have now.

What’s the best thing about your community? The beaches, river and mountains make the Shoalhaven a beautiful place to live. People are relaxed and friendly. Although it’s a small community, it’s not short of great cafés and restaurants. What do you enjoy most about being a pharmacist? Helping and making a connection with customers; as pharmacists, we are often the first line in the medical profession to help diagnose and treat patients. Customers come to us before seeing their doctor or going to hospital because we’re readily available and there’s no need for an appointment. They chat to us about their families, pets, hobbies, holidays and their health; we tend to see them more often than other medical professionals, so we get to know them as a person, not just a patient.

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 9

How do you like to relax or spend your free time?

Tell us something unexpected about you?

Doing home improvements with my fiancé, watching TV, going to the beach, surfing, playing soccer and reading!

One of my odd jobs before immigrating to Australia was as an assistant to a Japanese surfboard shaper in the Philippines; my friend had a surfing school and I taught surfing for a short period. During this time, I met many people from different walks of life (from the very wealthy to the lowest income) and this experience made me realise that money doesn’t define a person. I also met people from all around the world; I found Australians to be the most relaxed, and also the friendliest, quirkiest, and always ready for an adventure. That’s when I decided I wanted to live amongst these cool, laidback Aussies and make Australia my new home!

What are your favourite places to visit around Nowra? My front yard and back yards, Shoalhaven Heads Beach, Gerroa Beach, and Lobster Bay! What are three things you couldn’t live without? A radio, phone and Michael, my fiancé; he can fish, hunt, start a fire, build things and kill spiders. If the modern world ceased to exist, I would still have shelter, be well fed, comfortable, and protected from spiders.

ANTIBIOTICS EXPLAINED ALCOHOL It’s generally believed you shouldn’t drink alcohol with antibiotics. In actual fact, with most common antibiotics, drinking alcohol in small amounts is not likely to cause any serious problems – however there are one or two antibiotics that are exceptions. Always check with your pharmacist to be sure. If you are taking the following, you should avoid alcohol altogether: •

Metronidazole (Brand names include: Flagyl, Metronide)

Tinidazole (Brand names include: Fasigyn, Simplotan).

TrimethoprimSulfamethoxazole (Brand names include: Bactrim, Septrim)

ANTIBIOTICS, PROBIOTICS, AND GUT HEALTH

CONTRACEPTIVE PILL AND PREGNANCY

The natural bacteria that live in your body are becoming an increasing focus for researchers. By taking an antibiotic, especially a so-called ‘broad-spectrum’ antibiotic such as amoxycillin or cephalexin, you may wipe out a lot of good bacteria along with the bad bacteria.

There is another old warning that taking an antibiotic may make your contraceptive pill ineffective. However, recent evidence suggests that this is not the case – the only antibiotics that are thought to affect the contraceptive pill are Rifampicin and Rifabutin, which are only for very serious infections.

When you take an antibiotic, give some thought to supplementing with a probiotic for some time during and afterwards. This may reduce the side effects associated with reduced good bacteria, such as diarrhea or bloating.

When your body is processing alcohol, it diverts resources away from other important jobs, like fighting off infections. As a general rule, it’s best to minimise your alcohol intake whilst on any antibiotic to allow your body to rest and recover.

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 11

11

The vast majority of common antibiotics do not affect the contraceptive pill and do not make you more likely to fall pregnant – ask your pharmacist for advice if you are taking an antibiotic and want to be sure.

The advice provided in the article ‘Antibiotics Explained’ page 11 in Health Check Magazine Issue 4, is given as general advice. Consumers should speak with their Pharmacist for more information regarding their own personal health and the use of antibiotics, including potential medication interaction and contraindications. Information contained in this article can be referenced here: Archer, JS, Archer, DF (2002). Oral contraceptive efficacy and antibiotic interaction: a myth debunked. It goes without saying that investing in quality sun-protection products is an investment in your skin’s health. Aside from the anti-ageing benefits a good sun-care regime offers, high-protection sun products can significantly reduce your chances of developing melanoma. Stay sun smart: stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, cover-up with lightweight, long-sleeved clothes, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, and apply sun protection products to any exposed areas of skin. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or after swimming.

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 12

SunSense Clear Mist SPF 50 comes in a convenient spray bottle, and is ideal for acne-prone or oily skin, and those hard-to-reach areas(1). Specially formulated for children’s delicate skin, SunSense Junior SPF 50 is fragrance free and contains moisturising Vitamin B (Nicotinamide)(2).

Mild accidental sunburn can be treated at home; make sure you drink lots of water to replenish your fluids, avoid further sun exposure and treat the affected areas with a soothing after-sun gel. Hamilton’s Sunburn Relief & Repair cools and rehydrates, reduces redness and helps to minimise peeling with an odourless, non-sticky gel(3). The only good tan is a fake one; try Bondi Sands Self Tanning Lotion, for the look of sun-kissed skin without the damage(4).

WAYS

5 Busy schedules and overstimulation from media and electronic devices can lead to feelings of anxiety, keeping us from living in the moment. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce tension by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, encourage deeper selfreflection, improve mental and emotional flexibility, and enhance your sleep quality. Read on for some easy ways to incorporate mindfulness into your everyday life.

TO BRING MINDFULNESS INTO EVERYDAY LIFE

FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH Find a quiet place to sit, and breathe from your abdomen; inhale slowly for a count of four, pause, then exhale for a count of four. If any thoughts drift into your head, observe them and let them go, returning your focus to your breath. Start with just two minutes of breath focus, and build up from there. OBSERVE YOUR SURROUNDINGS Being ‘in the moment’ encourages us to slow down and observe the world around us. You can do this practise anywhere; just allow your gaze to rest wherever it lands. Absorb the details of what you see; again, if your mind wanders, gently return your focus to your surroundings.

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 17

OPEN YOUR EARS Practise really listening to others, and detecting ambient sounds around you. Isolating this sense can be challenging, but it’s surprising how many different noises you can discern when you truly focus. SAVOUR YOUR MEAL It’s so easy to eat without being present, consuming meals too quickly or on the go; try taking the time to experience your food, by perceiving the aroma, different flavours, and texture as you chew.

BE BODY AWARE Checking in with your body can have a grounding effect; notice any sensations, such as temperature, or the texture of clothes or furniture. Observe internal sensations, taking note of any tension and actively concentrating on releasing tightness in these areas.

Regular practise cultivates overall health and wellbeing on a physical, emotional, mental

YOUR GUIDE TO THE HEALING POWER OF HERBS DISCOVER THE MODERN USES OF AGE-OLD REMEDIES FOR COMMON AILMENTS, WITH CARUSO’S NATURAL HEALTH.

Since the early 19th century, scientists have been able to analyse herbs and establish their mechanism of action. They have also been able to determine which parts of the plant contains the highest levels of these active constituents; generally, the parts used in herbal medicine are the leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, berries and bark. In recent years, interest in herbal medicine has skyrocketed, leading to a greater scientific interest in the medicinal use of plants. Now, with the help of modern science and advancements in biotechnology, scientists are able to fully identify and test the chemical compounds within botanicals that have been used for centuries.

Today, hundreds of clinical studies are being conducted on well-known ancient herbal medicines to determine how they work in the body and what component of that plant is responsible for the therapeutic effects. This increase in herbs undergoing clinical trials for validity, rather than relying only on traditional information, has seen a shift to evidenced based herbal medicines, prompting a swing to standardised herbal medicine preparations, in which the active components of the herb are identified and included in concentrated forms in the preparation, to ensure the active component is at a dose that may provide therapeutic actions.

HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 4 - OCTOBER 2017.indd 21

Popular uses of herbal medicine include: •

Eye health – with the use of antioxidant rich herbs such as bilberry and lutein

Digestive health – with the use of bitter herbs including gentian and globe artichoke

Liver health – with the use of liver protective herbs milk thistle and schisandra

Joint pain – with the use of antiinflammatory herbs such as curcumin (turmeric) and boswellia

Skin health – with the use of antioxidant herbs such as French marine pine bark and grape seed extract.

Educating customers on the benefits of natural medicines is central to Caruso’s vision for long, happy and healthy lives. Caruso’s new natural health report, ‘Your Guide to the Healing Power of Herbs’, is now available to download for free; this report lists 10 of the most powerful healing herbs and the vast health benefits they provide over a wide range of common health ailments.

BALI BLISS NOT JUST FOR SUN-WORSHIPPERS AND THOSE SEEKING A WILD NIGHTLIFE, BALI OFFERS SOME TRULY UNIQUE EXPERIENCES, INVITING YOU TO RELAX AND REJUVENATE THE BODY AND SOUL.

CANGGU Located on the south coast of Bali, Canggu is the home of ‘Therapy’, a sanctuary which invites you to de-stress and reconnect, with treatment options such as traditional Balinese body massage, an aromatic sea salt scrub, and an energising facial utilising literal balls of ice to soothe sun-exposed skin, all concluded with a cup of warm ginger tea. If you’re more into yoga than spa treatments, you’re spoilt for choice in Canggu. Samadi, on Padang Linjong, is one of the more popular places, with a Hot Yoga studio close

UBUD The name Ubud is derived from the Balinese word ‘ubad’, meaning ‘medicine’, and this cluster of villages has certainly become the place to treat body and soul. Since ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, Ubud has become the ultimate mecca for those seeking to improve their yoga and connect to their spiritual side. Ubud offers many retreat options, with organised daily yoga and meals on-site for an immersive spiritual getaway. However, one of the most famous spiritual experiences in Bali can be found in Tirta Empul in Tempaksiring, just outside of Ubud and easily accessible via a scooter or with a driver. For more than a thousand years, Balinese worshippers have been drawn to Pura Tirta Empul, whose sacred spring is said to have

magical curative properties. Visitors start by making an offering at the temple, before climbing into the main pool to bathe and give offerings with prayer. Insider’s tip: after bathing, head to the Tegalalang rice terraces for breakfast, then spend the rest of the day visiting other temples in the area, soaking in the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful part of Bali.

Throughout 2017, Blooms The Chemist team members have come together to support our charity partner, Make-A-Wish Australia. As an organisation funded solely by donations, Make-A-Wish relies on the support of the public, and partners like Blooms to help make vital wishes come true. Blooms The Chemist stores have held numerous fundraisers in-store, including outstanding support of World Wish Day, and regular initiatives including ‘Bake a Wish’ days and fun-runs.

Our two major fundraiser events of the year included our Trivia Night, sponsored by Ego Australia, and our roaring 20s Casino Night, sponsored by HealthOne. Through our collective efforts, we have raised $150,000 throughout the year!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our support of Make-A-Wish this year, as we continue to work together in making a positive impact on the lives of seriously ill children across Australia.

29

These fundraising initiatives would not be possible without the support of our amazing Blooms The Chemist team, the greater community, and the generosity of our many supplier partners, all of whom have donated time, money and fantastic prizes to make these events so successful.
