PREPARARTION TESTS

Two Test Series took places during the summer as preparation events for the Commonwealth Games.

The first opportunity in Leamington provided a chance to try out the actual CWG greens in Leamington and was the first competitive opportunity for the Welsh Para Bowls squad since 2019 due to Covid. The squad was made up of mostly newly capped players and Directors. It was great to be back on the greens and returning to full competition. Pity about the weather though! A very wet few days. September 2nd - 5th saw a trip to Ayr, Northfield Bowling Club for a series hosted by Scotland. Some superb play on lovely greens. The mini heatwave had set the greens up well and they were running beautifully. Great preparation for the CWG and it has certainly made the selectors job more of a challenge with some great wins and a few nail biters. Julie Thomas, Gordon Llewelyn, Paul Brown, Dylan Williams, Chris Spriggs and Robbie Jones were the members of the Elite squad selected for these two events. Director Mark Adams, PD coach Marion Purcell, Team Manager Steve Rees .

A super summer of competitive bowls.

LLANDRINDOD WELLS BOWLING CLUB 27th ANNUAL TOUR Llandrindod Bowling Club and friends travelled to Torquay and the sunny English Riviera on the third Saturday of September, and enjoyed a very successful, dry week. by Clive Barrett

Sunday was a rest, recover and enjoy day. On the Monday morning the bowling trip was to Sidmouth, with a browse around the town, and enjoyment of the sea air. In the afternoon Sidmouth Bowling Club was visited, the Mid Wales tourists won on four rinks, losing two, the captain for the day was tour organiser Ken Price. The overall final score being 102 shots to 83 to Llandrindod. Throughout the week the club were well accepted by their hosts, and received great hospitality. Tuesday was the main organised day off from bowls, the holidaymakers travelled to Totnes for a trip down river to Dartmouth. There was lovely scenery, flora and wildlife to enjoy, with the trip enhanced by the captain giving a live running commentary of all the interesting points on or around the river. On Wednesday morning the bowlers travelled to see nearby Babbacombe Model Village, which was much enjoyed, with spectacular and beautiful gardens. The party then regrouped and travelled the short distance to Bitten Park Bowling Club for the afternoon six rink match. This proved to be the only defeat on tour by 135 shots to 89, to a strong home team. Shirley King, this year’s Llandrindod Ladies captain being the overall skipper for the day. Thursday saw a trip to Plymouth, especially for the ladies on the tour to enjoy a shopping expedition in the morning. Then there was a lunchtime move to play at Plymstock Bowling Club for the afternoon game. Although Llandrindod only won three rinks they triumphed overall by 101 shots to 77, mainly due to Min. Evans rink who won by a massive 30 shots to 6. The captain for the day was the very experienced Mid Wales bowler Brian Jones. Friday was the final bowling day of the week, there was a local game in Torquay at nearby Kings Bowling Club. The bowlers and supporters were able to stroll from the hotel to the green on the seafront for the afternoon encounter. The total scores were 107 shots to Llandrindod and 89 to Kings, the visitors winning on four rinks. One of these rinks being that of Ken Francis, who was the captain for the day. It is worth mentioning that Ken is this year’s President of the men’s Mid Wales Bowling Association. At the traditional final evening presentation, tour organiser Ken Price, and social organiser Brian Jones were presented with gifts, by Llandrindod B.C. Ladies captain Shirley King in appreciation of all their work in arranging such a successful week.

TOURERS VERSUS INDOOR STADIUM ANNUAL CHALLENGE MATCH The annual sequel to the outdoor tour took place recently, at the Radnorshire Indoor Bowling Stadium. This year’s challenge match proved to be ‘a turn up for the books’ because the Tourists won for the first time that anyone could remember. On the green carpet in a five rink match, the visitors prevailed by 88 shots to 74 winning three rinks, with tour organiser Ken Price as the day’s captain. Prior to the above friendly game, presentations of cheques for £300 each as a result of donations and fines raised on tour were made by Ann Edwards, soon to be President of the Mid Wales Women’s Bowling Association (see left in above picture) to Ilma Marpole, representing Hope House Children’s Charity, and (right) John Rees presenting Jean Prendergast with the cheque for The Bracken Trust.

NEWS IN BRIEF

SISIS Autoslit victorious at Victoria Park

A SISIS Autoslit is currently playing its part in helping to prepare ‘world class’ greens at Victoria Park.

Victoria Park is the home of English Bowls and hosts the annual Bowls England National Championships held in August. The five greens at Victoria Park are also used for County competitions, National events and for International matches and competitions. The widely respected greens are thanks to an expert greenkeeping regime led by head greenkeeper Mike Finch of idverde – one of the UK & Europe's leading provider of grounds maintenance. “The greens at Victoria Park have always been of a very high standard, but we are now working towards making them world-class,” said Mike. “With this in mind, I was asked what new equipment I needed which could help me make them world-class. The first thing I said was that I needed a pedestrian slitter. “I chose the SISIS Autoslit purely through the research I have been doing on different golf courses and other fine turf surfaces – I felt that it would be the best product for this particular site.” The SISIS Autoslit is a purpose-built pedestrian deep slitter which is suitable for use on fine or outfield turf helping to reduce compaction and assist the percolation of surface water. The deep clean slitting action cuts through the turf and the root zone leaving a thin slit on the surface and minimal surface disturbance. These slits encourage strong, healthy root growth of the grass plants, improving tolerance to drought conditions and promoting more rapid recovery after damage in play. Easy to use, the SISIS Autoslit incorporates a rear smoothing roller and uses a cantilever system to lift the machine out of operation. “It is very easy to use and I’m very impressed with what it can do,” said Mike. “We’ll use it monthly from December through to the end of March before the surface starts to dry again. “It is like a knife with a serrated edge, and it basically slices into the turf, but it doesn’t do any damage because there is a rear roller on it as well. You get a nice linear, aeration cut through your greens. “Not only does it help to keep the surface going, allowing the moisture to drain, but it is also good for root extension,” he continued. “In the colder months when the roots aren’t active, the SISIS Autoslit allows oxygen to reach those roots, and all the time you are doing this it will benefit the green when it comes to spring. What you find is that when the weather starts to warm, the roots will start pushing down into all the nice linear folds you have been creating with the Autoslit. “Ultimately, it helps you to keep the surface firm and dry but slightly moist lower down where the moisture is needed. It is a great piece of equipment.” www.sisis.com

GREENS & GREEN MAINTENANCE

after

Drainage cure for

Buckingham West End Bowls Club

before

Buckingham West End Bowls Club was founded in 1910 and enjoys a strong and loyal membership. Situated in Buckingham, England, the club aims to promote the game of Flat Green Bowls and provide facilities for the social needs and well-being of its members.

As a mixed club, they play men’s, ladies and mixed matches with other clubs in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. Greenkeeper Ian Jones joined the club in 2013 at which time, he says, the green drained well but in 2018 they started getting problems with drainage. On Christmas Eve 2020, the nearby river flooded the green to a depth of about 2ft. Although most of the water drained away within 24 hours, because of the drainage problem, part of the green remained underwater so long the roots of the grass began to rot. “We use contractors Avonmore Associates to do spraying, aeration in autumn and top dressing and we worked with Avonmore’s Brian Buttler to take some core samples. While the topsoil was good, we found there was no drainage layer,” says Ian. Brian’s view was the constant walking on the green over the many years had caused severe compaction. They coupled this with another reason. The green sits on yellow clay, being near Bedford, which is famous for brick making using the clay over the past hundred years. Ian had seen an article on a South Wales bowling club that had a similar drainage problem and they had called in Terrain Aeration, whom Brian also knew of. Whereas normal aeration is an accepted part of a good greenkeeping regime, it only reaches a depth of inches. Terrain Aeration’s system treats the ground down to a depth of one metre. At this depth, the ground is usually so compacted it requires fracturing to open up fissures and allow drainage. Their Terralift machine hammers a hollow probe through the soil using a JCB road breaker gun, and compressed air is released up to 20Bar (280psi). At the end of the air blast, they inject dried seaweed, which sticks to the fissure walls. This expands and contracts with the moisture in the soil to keep the area breathing. Ian and club member volunteers who help maintain the green backfilled the 1.5-inch probe holes with Lytag aggregate and covered with topsoil. The green was playable almost immediately. “Had we put in field drains it would have been very disruptive and using Terrain Aeration’s system meant we could do the work in the season,” says Ian. “Then we had no rain for some weeks so we had no idea if it had worked until the heaven’s opened in June. After severe downpours, we found the green drained far better than in years and the club is overjoyed with the result.” www.terrainaeration.co.uk

GREENS & GREEN MAINTENANCE New Dennis & SISIS Virtual Bowls Seminar

A new Dennis and SISIS Virtual Bowling Green Maintenance Seminar Portal is proving to be an invaluable free online resource for bowls greenkeepers and volunteers.

For over 20 years, Dennis and SISIS have been organising and hosting educational maintenance seminars for grounds managers and greenkeepers across a variety of sectors up and down the country at various venues and overseas. In particular, the companies have a long history of supporting the sport of bowls and the seminars, which are designed to ultimately help club greenkeepers and volunteers maintain their bowling greens, have significantly grown year on year. Inevitably, the Covid-19 pandemic brought the seminars to a temporary halt but Dennis and SISIS remained determined to still connect and engage with the bowls greenkeeping community. Plans were quickly put in place and using the latest technology, the Dennis and SISIS Virtual Bowling Green Maintenance Seminar Portal was launched in October last year. The free online portal was an instant success bringing seminars to a much wider audience and nearly a year on the portal membership continues to grow above all expectations. On the portal, members have access to regular, updated video seminar sessions on a wide range of relevant topics written and hosted by expert speakers. At the click of a button, users can also ask questions to the various experts and tap into their vast amount of experience and knowledge. Other resources on the portal include downloadable PDF’s containing seminar content, case studies, more informative videos, links to key products and vital information on funding. Furthermore, to celebrate the success of the portal, Dennis and SISIS recently launched a competition which would offer three bowls clubs an opportunity to improve the standard of their greens through a free bowling green consultation. Over 500 clubs entered the competition and Sunbury Sports Bowls Club in Surrey, Penistone & District Bowling Club in South Yorkshire and Barton Park in Lincolnshire were the three winning clubs selected at random. The prize saw renowned turf expert Alan Lewis visit each of the three clubs to carry out an in-depth consultation on the greens and provide each with an invaluable maintenance report and recommended improvements. As a featured expert on the Dennis and SISIS seminar portal, Alan revealed his delight at playing a key role. “I am amazed that so many clubs, both flat green and crown green, from England, Scotland and Wales, have already signed up to it,” he said. “I’m getting some good questions and I think it is going to keep growing and growing. From our side, we have got to keep providing relevant content that will really make a difference.” Dennis and SISIS Sales and Marketing Manager, Roger Moore, who has been instrumental in the development of the portal, agreed. “It has been incredible to see so many clubs making use of the seminar portal. Originally, the purpose of the portal was to continue to offer support and education to the bowls greenkeeping community during the pandemic. However, it has grown to a point where we are now connecting with a wider audience helping even more greenkeepers and volunteers to build on their knowledge and improve their playing surfaces. With this in mind, we are absolutely committed to continuing with and growing the free seminar portal. “The portal continues to be updated regularly with unique new content and we always welcome questions, feedback and suggestions on any potential topics. We’re always here to help.” To sign-up for FREE to the Dennis and SISIS Virtual Bowling Green Maintenance Seminar visit https://dennisandsisisvirtualseminar.co.uk/ www.dennisuk.com www.sisis.com
