Meet Tim

Tim joined the Black Hills Works family in 1974, when he was 22, after growing up in Colorado and Wyoming. He has an independent personality and likes having his own apartment at Wisconsin. There’s no hesitation in his voice when he says, “I like the people that work here. I like them all.”

Tim was employed in several settings during his career, including food service, the recycling center, and Black Hills Works Industries. Now age 70, Tim is retired.

Tim is very well known for his love of Post 22 baseball games and for bowling. There’s even a stadium seat from the old Post 22 structure installed on the patio outside of his apartment building for him to sit in.

Pat, Tim’s mom, has a very important place in Tim’s life. When asked what makes him happiest, he says, “My mom.” He loves spending time with her and they talk frequently on the phone.

With the support of Black Hills Works, Tim is living a full life!

Meet Dean

At age 78, Dean has been with us almost from the beginning, joining the Black Hills Works family in 1960 at the age of 18. A quiet, agreeable, and kind individual, his staff says, “Everybody likes Dean.”

As a young adult, Dean was employed in some of BHW’s early enterprises, including the recycling center on Range Road. He ended his career with a decade of janitorial services at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Dean is now happily retired. He enjoys spending time at BHW day services programming, watching movies, singing and going to church, watching the Dallas Cowboys, and fishing and camping with his friends in the summer.

The things that are important to Dean are the things that are important to all of us: family, friends, recreation, work, and home. With the supports provided by Black Hills Works, Dean has lived a full and meaningful life, becoming an integral part of his community.

Meet Maureen

Maureen has been working at Suzie Cappa for almost six years. She is a gentle, reserved young lady whose art says a great deal about her talent and creativity. Her work, usually done in colored pencil or markers, has a unique and immediately recognizable style that vibrates with creativity. Small repeating triangles and squares, made of hundreds of strokes, branch out across paper to build colorful, radiating structures.

Outside of creating her masterpieces at Suzie Cappa, Maureen lives at home and has a beautiful relationship with her parents. She is quite shy and affectionately leans in to whisper in her parents’ ears to answer questions from others. Her adventures with them have taken her around the world, including Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, Alaska, New England, and beyond.

Maureen loves Disney and superhero films, as well as musicals and plays. Her DVD and Disney book collections fill the home. Maureen herself is the inspiration for a children’s book recently written by her sister, The Door in the Closet. When asked which word she though best described herself, Maureen chose “enchanting.” We couldn’t agree more.

Meet Paige

An artist at Suzie Cappa Art Center, Paige works very diligently at her sewing machine throughout the day, playing pop music on her headphones while she taps her feet and sometimes sings along. Her bright, colorful placemats, coasters, and wall hangings often feature appliqued foxes, birds, and mushrooms. They are popular with customers.

Staying focused at work is really important to Paige, and she encourages her fellow artists to do the same. Staff at Suzie Cappa share that Paige is a truly thoughtful, respectful individual who often doesn’t want to stop working when the day ends.

Paige is very close to her family and happily lives at home. Paige is quiet and kind. When asked what she wants others to know about her, Paige doesn’t say much but calmly remarks that, “My work speaks for me.” Paige, and her work, add sparkle to those around her every day.

Donor Story

Black Hills Works was honored to receive a generous grant from the Larson Family Foundation to purchase a Soundbeam 6 Big Band electronic music system. This expertly designed assistive technology allows anyone to make music and has quickly become a favorite activity in our day services programming. It is a wonderful gift that is already enriching the lives of the people we support!

The Soundbeam lets anyone jump right into creating music through sensitive equipment that picks up even the slightest movement and translates it into music. It is designed to be a high success, multi-sensory activity, using sensors, remote foot pedal switches, microphones, speakers, and a touchscreen interface. Settings can be adjusted for preset backing sampling tracks, different musical instruments, autocorrection, and music style. This innovative, elegant device allows anyone, regardless of their limitations or disability, to play music, providing a sense of accomplishment and freedom.

“We're looking forward to many years of learning and enjoyment with this system!" says Amy Speidel. The Soundbeam was something she knew would be very beneficial for the people supported by Black Hills Works, but its purchase was only possible through the support of the Larson Family Foundation. She, and the individuals at day services, are immensely grateful for this addition to their programming options. Thank you, Larson Family Foundation!

Spotlight Award

Meet March’s Spotlight Award Winner…Peggy Steensgaard!

Peggy has been with Black Hills Works since 2014 and lives at the Edwards complex.

March

People’s Choice Award: Godfrey

A huge shout-out and thank you to Godfrey Brake Service! When Woodworks was moving into their new location, Godfrey demonstrated the value of being a good neighbor. They let Black Hills Works borrow some of their equipment, making the movein process go much easier and smoother.

Thank YOU, Godfrey, for being such a great neighbor!

Peggy is a delightful individual to work with. She started at the Career Learning Center of the Black Hills in June of 2022, with a secondgrade reading level. After learning of the importance of STAR reading class (Student Achievement in Reading), Peggy was fully willing to participate. Her enthusiasm and commitment to attending class regularly and practicing skills outside of class has led to an improvement in her reading ability. She now reads at a fourth-grade ability and is increasing her fluency and vocabulary to promote comprehension.

Peggy has also been working on basic math skills and is mastering fractions. She is always cheery about learning and, while at times frustrated, she is also willing to continue to do hard things and try. She is unafraid to ask for help and expresses curiosity. Peggy is kind to other students and actively gives compliments to others working in the classroom. Everyone in our classrooms gain perspective, resilience, and diversity by having Miss Peg as part of our learning community.

Peggy has come out of her shell and helps the people with in her home and at school. Peggy has made friends with her hair stylist, people at the shopping center, and throughout her pod. Peggy has been volunteering with housemates when they want to get their hair or nails done and talking with housemates to calm them down. Peggy has maintained her job with Servall for the past few months as well.

Peggy loves to work on her diamond art, paint by numbers, coloring on her IPAD, helping cook in the kitchen, and working on her GED!

Congratulations, Peggy! Keep up the awesome work! To nominate someone

Please complete the nomination form and submit it to Carrie Moser by the 5th of each month.

YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!

Safe Driver Program

Happy March everyone!

Well, through two months of competition, the Maintenance Department continues to hold its lead at the top. Offutt is only a half a percentage point away in second and Black Gap is in third place right now. As we continue to track our safest driving department, please continue to be alert while driving! No texting, no phone calls, no social media, etc. While operating an agency vehicle, remember your sole responsibility is to drive in a safe manner and provide quality transportation to the people we support. As we move into the spring months, please be aware traffic will increase as the Black Hills will begin ramping up for the tourism season.

Focus on Safety

by

Hello BHW! I am excited it is finally March. I’m not sure why (because I have lived here most of my life) but for some reason the month of March is a “Spring” month. I know, I know…It WILL snow into May (possibly), but my brain tells me – “Spring is Here!”

As promised last month, I wanted to recognize some locations/ departments for end of year accomplishments. Congratulations to our top three award winners in the Safe Driver Competition. Third place goes to Fir (Ben Watson – pictured). Second place is awarded to RC Transportation (John Meyer – pictured). First place is awarded to Offutt Transportation. Congratulations to our top three departments.

Last month we recognized a handful of locations that were accident free. The remaining locations that were accident free in 2022 are Parkview (Kari Thompson), ITS 2 (Sara Giles), Edwards A (Jaylynn Mace), Arizona Home (Laura Gibson), Anaconda (Laura Gibson), and Fir (Ben Watson).

Congratulations to all of our end of year recipients! I am looking forward to seeing how we strive as an organization to be safer in our daily duties.

Bring on Spring!
