Welcome

In this issue…

Welcome… ISSUE 36 WINTER 2024

While we pride ourselves on providing plenty of inspiration and food for thought in every issue of The Installer, this time of year is always a particular highlight for us as we’re able to bring you all the winners from this year’s BiKBBI Awards. Once again, the opportunity to recognise and reward some of Celebrating the very best in the KBB installation industry the best talent in the industry made for a wonderful occasion and demonstrates just what can be achieved through hard work, innovative thinking, and dedication to high professional standards. Discover all of this year’s winners starting on page 18. Also in this issue, there’s a round up of the key talking points from the 2024 BiKBBI Annual Conference, where a stellar line-up brought a wealth of ideas to the table. Sessions covered apprenticeships, financial forecasts, diversity, sustainability and much more in what was a wide-ranging and hugely inspiring programme. Check out our re-cap on page 14. Of course, there’s lots more from some of the sector’s leading brands and experts too, all aimed at helping you to enhance and expand your skills, your service, and your business. As always, we hope you enjoy this edition of The Installer. Please do get in touch with your feedback.

Despite it being February already, this is my first real opportunity to wish our readers a Happy New Year! I hope 2024 has gotten off to a flying start – it certainly has for us here at BiKBBI! With our conference and awards both taking place earlier this month, it’s been a busy few weeks and months of planning and organising, but we remain focused on the opportunities and challenges facing the installation businesses and installers we represent, our corporate sponsors and retail partners and our industry. Unfortunately, the end of 2023 did not signify an end to the tumultuous times we have found ourselves in since 2020. I’m in no doubt that 2024 will be a tough one for us all, with lots of uncertainty but, as was the theme of our annual conference recently, one thing I am certain about is that when we come together and work together, we can not only weather the storm but prosper. The Installer Magazine remains a great vehicle for sharing, learning and exploring and this issue is packed with content on everything from the shining stars from the BiKBBI Awards to advice and guidance from industry experts. Enjoy!

BiKBBI UPDATE

Easy Bathrooms becomes latest BiKBBI Installation Standards Partner Easy Bathrooms has become the latest BiKBBI Retail Installation Standards Partner in preparation for the launch of its national installation service, Simply Install, which will provide customers with a turnkey fitting service across Easy Bathroom’s impressive 139 showroom estate, working closely with BiKBBI to deliver a robust proposition for its customers. Speaking on behalf of Easy Bathrooms, Head of Installations David Rowley said: “We’re delighted to be working with BiKBBI as we develop Simply Install across our showroom estate over coming weeks and months. I have worked with BiKBBI for many years and enormously value the work they drive within our industry. At Easy Bathrooms, we completely understand the challenges facing the industry, especially the evident shortage of skilled labour across the construction and home improvement sector. We’ll work with BiKBBI, not only to connect and work with the very best specialist bathroom installers, but to collaborate efforts in the building of a sustainable future pipeline of professional installers for tomorrow.” Rowley says that the firm considers BiKBBI to be a key

6

strategic partnership for several reasons: “The organisation manages and maintains the bulk of our compliance requirements, ensuring that risk to our customers and brand is minimised with their leading compliance management tools. Additionally, they help us to connect with new installers, deliver training and development to both our installers and internal management team, provide us with an inspection service and generally support the complex task of Easy Bathrooms delivering a leading installation solution for our customers. Christine Masson, spokesperson for BiKBBI’s registration team, added: “In addition to the benefits for a retailer to partner with us [BiKBBI], it’s important to recognise the many benefits that professional installers gain in registering with the UK’s only institute dedicated to their sector. We help these businesses, often micro-SMEs, to gain a bigger voice, join with thousands of other like-minded professionals, get access to news, technical updates, commercial cost-savers, training and development and specialist support for their business.”

BiKBBI Update

eBay pledges support for KBB sector with BiKBBI corporate sponsorship Leading online marketplace eBay has become the latest brand to show its support for driving positive change in the KBB installation sector by becoming a corporate sponsor of the British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation. eBay, most widely known for its auction-style listing site, creates pathways to connect millions of sellers and buyers in more than 190 markets around the world, providing opportunities to grow and thrive. There is a significant opportunity to work more closely with the installation community, delivering solutions to redirect furniture, hardware and appliances away from landfill and perhaps even monetise what would otherwise become waste. The prospect of connecting installers with product via an increased network of KBB manufacturers and retailers is also very exciting for eBay. With 192 million active sellers, eBay provides a unique, potentially untapped and environmentally sustainable solution for established bricks and mortar and online retailers, as well as manufacturers across many industries, creating a route to market for products such as returned and reconditioned merchandise. BiKBBI, is focused on driving positive change in the KBB industry through its work on education, standards, sustainability and compliance, ultimately uniting

manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and retailers with the installation community. As a not-for-profit organisation, the institute, and its efforts to build a sustainable workforce for the future, is wholly funded by registration fees and corporate sponsorship. Rosalind Bridges, Category Manager at eBay, said: “We are really happy to be working closely with the BiKBBi as we have a continued focus on bringing ‘not new’ inventory to our platform, with bathroom and kitchens being the next areas of the site we would like to focus on. We know there is stock out there that can be refurbished or simply given a second life by reselling on eBay.” Damian Walters, BiKBBI CEO, added: “‘The Institute’s priorities on education and sustainability align with eBay’s values and strategy, and the partnership has the potential to deliver significant benefit to, not only BiKBBI registered installation businesses, but also to our network of manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Gaining the support of a global brand such as eBay is a milestone for BiKBBI and a huge positive for the whole industry.”

BiKBBI Update

How to protect your business against financial catastrophe Small businesses are the backbone of economies worldwide, but they often face unique challenges, particularly when it comes to financial stability, writes Michelle Daniels, Director of Marketing and Communications at BiKBBI.

Protecting against financial loss is essential for their survival and long-term success, and I believe that taking a proactive stance towards financial stability holds the key to survival when things don’t quite go to plan. Whether it’s an economic downturn, unexpected expenses, market fluctuations or when a customer simply doesn’t (or can’t) pay, there are many ways in which small businesses may face financial struggles – and the KBB industry is by no means immune to financial risk. Aside from commercial collapse – which is usually associated with bigger financial risk, especially to tradespeople who work with larger retail clients – consumer behaviour evidently changes when economic uncertainty becomes a factor. Simply put, many industries see a sharp incline of customers refusing or delaying final balance payments during recessional times, often using the balance as a way to barter on the final price, using a wide range of reasons why payment should be withheld. So, whether it’s customers not paying or retailers facing financial collapse, it is important that small businesses take steps to ensure that they are protected from third party shenanigans as much as possible. The obvious solution would be that tradespeople take the payment up front, but sadly that’s not an option in most instances. It is not something any sensible retailer would consider when agreeing terms with sub-contracted labour and taking full payment up front from private customers would not comply with fair trading laws.

8

bikbbi.org.uk

So, how exactly can businesses protect themselves? There is no one answer to overcome the risk, but there are a number of proactive measures that will help to dramatically reduce the risk to any small (or bigger) business, should the issue arise:

DIVERSIFY REVENUE STREAMS Relying heavily on one product, service, client or income stream can leave a business incredibly vulnerable, yet we see this on a regular basis. Businesses that ‘put their eggs into one retailer’s basket’ is often where things go wrong. Diversification (working with more than one retailer/client) spreads the risk and should be the number one priority for small businesses heading in to 2024. Explore new or target different customer segments to create multiple revenue sources. This can help mitigate the impact of any one area experiencing a downturn or, in particular, one retailer going pop.

MAINTAIN A CASH RESERVE Small businesses are notoriously poor at building a nest egg, but building an emergency fund is vital. Aim to set aside a percentage of profit regularly to create a safety net for unexpected expenses or

BiKBBI Update

There is no single answer to overcome the risk, but there are a number of proactive measures that will help to reduce it other financial stresses caused from outside influences such as an economic downturn. This reserve can cover operational costs during tough times without significantly impacting day-to-day operations or necessitating external borrowing. Whilst interest rates are dropping back to some kind of normal levels, generally speaking, they are only really heading in one direction and subsequently, the cost of borrowing will increase over time.

INVEST IN INSURANCE Insurance is a shield against unforeseen circumstances. Consider various types such as property insurance, liability insurance, business interruption insurance, and cyber insurance based on your specific industry and potential risks. While it’s an additional cost, it can protect against significant financial loss in case of accidents, natural disasters, or legal liabilities. Our strategic partner,Marsh Commercial, provides solid advice and guidance to our industry and recently Client Executive Grant Barnfather wrote a blog of his own looking at this area in particular.

IMPLEMENT STRONG FINANCIAL CONTROLS Maintain a vigilant eye on financial operations. Regularly review cash flow, budgeting, and expenses. Implement internal controls to prevent fraud or errors. Utilise accounting software and seek professional advice to ensure accuracy and compliance with financial regulations. There are loads of great financial solutions available on the market, with many tradespeople opting for software including Xero and Quickbooks. These solutions help financial planning and automate many areas of bookkeeping, including invoicing, purchasing and your HMRC tax returns.

BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH SUPPLIERS AND CLIENTS Developing solid relationships with suppliers and clients can be invaluable during tough times. Negotiate favourable payment terms with suppliers to manage cash flow better. Cultivate strong client relationships to encourage repeat business and prompt payments, and make sure the terms are fair and reasonable for both parties.

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY FOR EFFICIENCY AND PROTECTION Adopting technology can streamline operations and reduce costs. Automate routine tasks, leverage cloud-based solutions for scalability, and implement cybersecurity measures to safeguard against potential data breaches, which can be financially devastating. With private customers in particular, consider new tech to provide peace of mind, not only for you, but for new customers too. Consider the Protect My Install platform to transact with customers. It takes care of quoting, payments, payment processing, contracts, variations, completion, insurance backed guarantees and even disputes – and for BiKBBI registered businesses, it is free to use.

PLAN FOR CONTINGENCIES Develop a robust contingency plan for various scenarios. Anticipate potential risks and devise strategies to mitigate their impact. A well-thought-out contingency plan can guide decisionmaking during crises, reducing financial fallout. Again, BiKBBI registered businesses get access to lots of business planning templates to help with this type of planning – all accessible by the BiKBBI mobile app.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE Consulting with financial advisors, accountants, or business consultants can provide invaluable insights. They can assess your business, identify potential risks, and recommend strategies to minimise financial vulnerabilities. We work with The Accurate Accountant who provide accountancy advice and guidance to our registered businesses and at a discounted rate too. The discount can be found via the BiKBBI mobile app too. In conclusion, while it’s impossible to eliminate all financial risk, small businesses can take proactive steps to protect themselves. By diversifying revenue streams, maintaining reserves, investing in insurance, implementing strong financial controls, nurturing relationships, embracing technology, planning for contingencies, and seeking professional advice, businesses can fortify themselves against financial losses and navigate challenges with greater resilience. Remember, the key lies in being proactive and adaptable. Small steps taken today can make a significant difference in securing the financial future of your business.

BiKBBI Conference 2024

Working Together

The BiKBBI Annual Conference 2024 underlined the importance of collaboration to drive skills, diversity, and to ensure the future of the industry On Tuesday 6 February the British Institute of KBB Installation held its 2024 conference in Westminster. This annual event, hosted at the prestigious QEII Centre and sponsored once again by Senstec and Quooker, is a crucial forum for professionals, industry leaders and experts from the KBB industry to gain insight, discuss key topics and make valuable connections. BiKBBI’s 2024 conference theme was ‘Driving industry change through collaboration’, and speakers and panellists shared opinions and experiences and debated the sector’s challenges and opportunities, across a series of engaging presentations and discussions. The event was hosted by Hannah Prevett, Deputy Editor of The Times Enterprise Network, who expertly guided activities and thoughts throughout the day. The conference was opened by

BiKBBI CEO Damian Walters, who celebrated the existing collaboration from sponsors, retail partners and stakeholders which drives positive change for the sector but warned there is still much to do and a need for greater collaboration from the whole industry on the subject of education, standards, compliance and sustainability. Results of the BiKBBI Installer Survey 2024 were also unveiled at the conference. Keynote speakers included Fergus Harradence, Deputy Director of Infrastructure Construction & Rail at the Department for Business & Trade, who shared the UK government’s predictions for 2024, highlighting that, despite the continued challenges with a shrinking workforce and the continued skills gap, there was growth potential with both consumer and business confidence increasing which would ultimately benefit

Conference host, Hannah Prevett, Deputy Editor, The Times Enterprise Network

BiKBBI hosted a sustainability panel featuring Phil Viner from Triton Showers, Tom Reynolds from the BMA and Lyrical Communications’ David Ventris-Field to discuss how to reach and support KBB installers better on the topic of sustainability. BiKBBI’s Installer Survey 2024 highlighted that 1 in 5 installers have noticed an increase in customers asking for recommendations on environmentally-friendly products, and over 50% of installers feel the industry is

not doing enough to reduce its impact on the environment. Diversity Ambassador for BiKBBI, the Rt. Hon Stuart Lawrence – supported by James Moore from the MoD’s Careers Transition Partnership and Apprentice Plumber Sophie Maguire – led a workshop on why and how the industry should work towards improving diversity and inclusion, highlighting the benefits that a diverse workforce can bring to businesses and the industry. Stuart Lawrence then asked

delegates at the conference to sign BiKBBI’s ‘Charter for Change’ – a commitment to work with BiKBBI to explore a revised inclusivity recruitment strategy – with 55 businesses pledging their support for the charter.

Developing Skills Education and apprenticeships also remained on the 2024 conference agenda, being a key area of focus for BiKBBI as a route to tackling the current skills gap. A panel of experts, led by Hannah Hockley from The Apprenticeship Partner, included Wickes Apprenticeship Programme Manager Connie Collett, independent retailer and apprenticeships champion Simon Taylor, KBB apprentice employer

The panel discussed recent advances in apprenticeships and training, including the new standalone Apprenticeship Standard for Fitted Furniture Installers reinforcing that access to education and training is integral to resolving the skills shortage, with Hannah Hockley highlighting the importance of the whole industry recognising the severity of the situation and the importance of support from all areas of the sector. Damian Walters, CEO of BiKBBI, said: “The BiKBBI annual conference has seen significant growth over the past three years, and it is not by coincidence. The attendance of so many brands and businesses is representative of the importance that installation plays to the whole industry and recognises the role that we fulfil as an institute. “The theme of the day was collaboration, which was demonstrated by the 160

delegates who took time away from their busy day jobs to come here, join the conversation, and support this vital sector of the KBB industry. But now the real work begins, and we will continue to drive the agenda on the topics raised today with the support of our corporate sponsors, retail partners and

wider stakeholders. “I would like to personally thank all contributors, speakers and panellists involved in today’s event, along with all of the delegates who, through collaboration, made the event a success and have given the industry a solid platform to move forward from.”

Let there be light… and sound

As consumer demand for smart lighting systems continues to grow, distributor Häfele has partnered with Zuma to offer a product range that’s not only easy to install but combines light and sound in a single product. Jake Loughlin, Category Manager – Lighting at Häfele UK, introduces Zuma… Without question, lighting is in demand in the modern kitchen. In a survey of 2,000 homeowners completed last year, consumers told us that spotlights for practical work were the third most useful feature in a kitchen (70%). We also found that more functional lighting (14%) and better mood lighting that changes colour or brightness (11%) would be key priorities for consumers planning their next kitchen, plus 3% of our respondents are

planning a new sound system in their next raft of home improvements. With this upward trend in mind, we’re pleased to announce a new partnership with British technology company, Zuma, to provide its innovative products of the same name. Zuma is an LED light and a HiFi speaker system, intelligently paired inside a single downlight. Designed by a team of industry experts, including renowned industrial

designer Morten Warren and acoustic engineer Laurence Dickie, Zuma delivers beautiful lighting and immersive sound via simple wireless control, creating clutter-free home environments freed from assorted household electronics. Straightforward for the installer and homeowner, Zuma eliminates the need for multiple smart devices, cables, plugs, and sockets and houses everything inside an ultracompact downlight unit, which is easy to install. It can also be retrofitted into existing fixtures, using current lighting circuits and switches. WiFi, voice and Bluetooth enabled, Apple and Android compatible and IP65 Rated, it is one of the most advanced smart

home tech products available on the market today. Every part of Zuma’s software is also fully updateable, helping customers future-proof their home for years to come. Zuma comprises a sleek aluminium chassis that protects components inside and houses its patented Blade SystemTM for quick, easy, neat installation. In fact, installation can be done in minutes, as it simply replaces existing ceiling downlights with no extra cabling required. Inside Zuma is a highperformance monolithic Class D amplifier controlled by a best-in-class central ARM processor and a quad-core CPU. Its speaker contains a patented aluminium woofer and radial neodymium magnet

unit that delivers pace, rhythm, and extraordinary sonic detail. Zuma’s high-repetitive LED light array fills homes with natural, tunable lighting. It offers total ambient lighting control, with a

whole host of tunable strength and colour temperature options for personalised light settings. Zuma also features a magnetically detachable acoustic bezel available in a range of design styles. This includes the pioneering Smart Bezel Voice – which seamlessly integrates Alexa Built-in into your Zuma setup, for hands-free voice control. Zuma is controlled by a custom-designed app, which is packed with wellbeing features for a calmer home. These include options to fill spaces with circadian light that tracks the changing sun across the day, or pre-programmed sound and lightscapes designed to bring mindfulness and focus into your daily routine. Zuma’s ground-breaking system is made up of two complementary products – Lumisonic, and Luminaire. Together, these two products offer a complete sound and lighting solution for the modern home. Laminate Splashbacks worktops

Kitchen Splashbacks Exploring a key category for installers in 2024 High interest rates and the ongoing cost of living crisis has caused many homeowners to think twice about large-scale home renovations in 2024. Elliott Fairlie, Product Lead at Bushboard, explains how innovations in kitchen splashbacks can make a quick kitchen refresh easier and more costeffective than ever before. A good number of kitchen and bathroom installers may have started 2024 with a degree of trepidation, just like their customers. With both mortgage and inflation rates impacting disposable income levels among homeowners, we may see less scope for major kitchen and bathroom renovation projects as a result. Yet as this challenge remains, installers can do what many of them do best – use their product knowledge to problem solve and recommend cost-effective solutions that many of their customers are looking for. One such product category primed to become a real asset for installers is the kitchen splashback, with product innovation having made it genuinely possible to give a kitchen a new lease of life on a budget. So how exactly can a kitchen splashback make such a difference?

Ease of installation When it comes to home renovation projects, time really is money, and the average homeowner is increasingly sensitive to the impact installation time can have on the overall cost of their project. Fortunately for installers looking to offer a viable solution to their customers, a new aluminium splashback can revitalise a room in just a matter of hours, reducing downtime and labour costs dramatically. What’s more, opting for a fireproof kitchen splashback can remove the time consuming task of tiling behind a hob, or the arduous challenge of cutting glass panels. Available in finishes emulating materials such as marble, stone, wood and tile, aluminium kitchen splashbacks, like those in Bushboard’s Alloy range, offer a streamlined preparation and installation process.

Thanks to its composition and thickness, once measured, the material can be easily cut, drilled and shaped to fit any required sizing with a variety of standard tools. Kitchen splashbacks in the Alloy range are available in four varying sizes and can be readily adapted to accommodate for outlets, switches and any other fixtures with ease, which further simplifies the preparation process. When it comes to the installation, aluminium kitchen splashbacks often come with various mounting options such as mechanical fasteners or, typically, adhesive backing or supplied adhesive. Mounting

the splashbacks with adhesive eliminates the need for drilling or screwing, simplifying the process further. Bushboard’s Alloy kitchen splashbacks can be fixed into position using Complete adhesive, creating a clean application with no need for grout.

condition with ease, making it an easy to sell to customers. Although a splashback is, by its very nature, in place to accommodate splashes, oil and grime, once installed, aluminium kitchen splashbacks can be kept clean with the simple wipe of a damp cloth and mild detergent.

Ease of maintenance

Ease of sale

It’s safe to say that today’s homeowner is especially timepoor and with that comes a need to minimise the time spent either waiting for a new kitchen to be fitted or committing to the regular cleaning required to maintain it. This is where aluminium splashbacks, such as Alloy, really come into their own. Unlike a tiled kitchen splashback, which has a constant requirement for grout to be cleaned, an aluminium kitchen splashback can be kept in pristine

In the current climate, given the financial pressures many homeowners are under, 2024 could be another year where quick kitchen updates win out over major refurbishment projects. By recommending products of this nature, installers can maintain a competitive edge throughout the year. To take a closer look at Alloy, why not order a sample of the new kitchen splashback or watch the installation video?

Hot taps

Franke’s new Maris Water Hub electronic instant boiling water tap in Chrome.

HOME HUB

Franke’s Maris Water Hub with streamlined installation and expert support

Drawing on the brand’s extensive experience in the hot taps market, Franke’s new Maris Water Hub offers a combination of advanced features and simplified installation. In this Q&A, Dan Weston, Field Service Team Leader at Franke, shares insights into the range. Why did Franke introduce Maris Water Hub? We’ve launched the Maris Water Hub to bring together the elements we know many consumers prefer into a newly designed model. Based on over 10 years’ experience in the instant boiling taps market, the new range combines the best features of our previous tap models with improvements that simplify the installation process, giving greater flexibility, offer added benefits to the end consumer and ensure the long life of the Maris Water Hub system.

What features make the Maris Water Hub an attractive choice for homeowners? The versatility of the Maris Water Hub system is one of its major selling points. Homeowners can choose from either mechanical or electronic operation with the latter offering

40

bikbbi.org.uk

the flexibility to upgrade from 3-in-1 functionality with 100°C boiling water and mains hot and cold, to 4-in-1 with cold filtered water by purchasing the optional filtration kit. It also offers a choice of either a 4L or 7L boiler, both designed to sit neatly in the cupboard, giving consumers more choice depending on their household’s needs. The system incorporates the premium Pro M filter cartridge which is tried and tested on our Minerva tap models. Besides purifying the water by eliminating odours, chlorine, organic pollutants and microplastics and retaining valuable minerals, it prevents limescale build up in the boiler to ensure it works efficiently and its lifespan is prolonged. The boiler material has been upgraded to stainless steel, which is also more resistant to limescale in hard water areas. Maris Water Hub also offers several eco-friendly and cost-saving benefits.

The ECO-cartridge in the tap can save 50% more water, while the temperature limiter conserves energy by preventing unnecessary water heating. The A-rated boiler ensures energy efficiency, and both the 4L and 7L models have fast re-heating times at around 8 and 15 minutes, respectively. The tap itself has an attractive design and comes in our bestselling J-Spout style in the popular finishes of Chrome, Decor Steel, and Matt Black.

What are the installation benefits of the Maris Water Hub system? The system is sold as a complete set, including the tap, boiler and filter. Everything is clearly marked and packaged in one box, along with an installation manual for easy reference. This simplifies the set up for installers. Another benefit is improved water pressure compatibility. Unlike our previous tap ranges

Hot taps that could only handle 2-4 bar of water pressure, the new system accommodates a broader range of 1-5 bar. This mitigates the need for pressure reducing valves, providing fitters with more flexibility and easier installation. The pressure relief valve of the Maris Water Hub is now a mobile component; a change from our previous models where it was integrated into the M Box. This now provides greater flexibility, enabling the pressure relief valve to be placed higher in cupboards when space allows.

installation to reduce the need for repeat call-outs. We offer peace of mind with an annual maintenance package, including alerts for filter replacement, benefiting both fitters and homeowners.

What support is available from Franke to help installers fitting Maris Water Hub?

How easy is it to upgrade from 3-in-1 to 4-in-1 functionality? It is a very straightforward process. It’s a simple ‘plug in and play’ setup with no programming required. The upgrade takes approximately 15 minutes and utilises the same power supply, seamlessly integrated into the existing system. The installation typically takes around an hour for a straightforward setup, assuming the cupboard is suitable and access for the tap installation is readily available or requires minimal plumbing modifications. This estimate is based on installing the electronic model with 4-in-1 functionality.

Does Maris Water Hub offer any other installation benefits? For homes without mains hot water, like those with a gravityfed system, Maris Water Hub offers an optional Warm Water Support component. This component blends filtered boiling water from the tank with the mains cold feed, delivering a consistent supply of warm water at 55°C. Unlike previous models where this feature was integrated into the M Box during installation, causing potential confusion, the Warm Water Support is now a separate option that is easily integrated by an installer. This change prevents unnecessary inclusion when

Picture shows the kit stored under the sink when installing the Maris Water Hub electronic tap with 4-in-1 functionality.

not needed and provides a straightforward installation solution.

What are the common issues you’ve encountered with instant boiling water taps and how can these be avoided? Regular maintenance, especially replacing the filter every 6-12 months, is crucial in preventing issues due to limescale formation in hard water areas, safeguarding the heating tank and tap. With Maris Water Hub replacing the filter is a simple task and there is no requirement to turn the water off as there’s an automatic shut off valve in the filter head. You simply turn the old filter to a quarter turn clockwise – a few drops of water may result so have a cloth handy – remove it, twist and push up the new filter a quarter turn anti-clockwise and it’s done. Prevention is always better than cure and installers can advise customers during

We provide a comprehensive range of support for installers and end customers, including a technical support hotline that offers assistance and onsite help if needed. Our website is a rich resource with guides, installation instructions, technical details, FAQs, cleaning and maintenance guides, and downloadable brochures. Why Alderley Bespoke chose Zuma Alderley Bespoke specified a sound and light system from Zuma for one of its latest stunning projects… Alderley Bespoke are one of the UK’s leading suppliers of luxury orangeries – creating inimitable spaces for some of the country’s most desirable homes. Bringing the outside in, their bespoke orangeries build atmospheres for quiet mornings, lazy afternoons and long evenings. After discovering Zuma and hearing its powerful sound and light first-hand, Alderley

Bespoke knew the systems would add an extra layer to the already rich offering they provide to their clients. Fresh off the back of a first integration in a recent build, Alderley Bespoke’s Managing Director Nigel Dinneen is already looking forward to starting work on multiple projects that incorporate Zuma in the coming months.

Alderley Bespoke’s Story Alderley Bespoke are in the business of delivering dreams; beautifully-designed orangeries that are the perfect addition to some of the UK’s most incredible homes. Nigel has over 65 years of experience in building, installation and scheduling. It was this experience and passion that led to Alderley Bespoke being born. No two orangeries are the same – but every single project shares the team’s commitment to excellence and intricate design. the initial designs to the smallest detail, everything must be perfect. When the opportunity to integrate light and sound into their new projects arose, without taking up valuable space, it was a no-brainer.

An opportunity to incorporate sound Nigel knew his design and installation of beautiful structures demanded the highest quality. Loved by individuals the country over, his orangeries are safe spaces that ooze class, encouraged relaxation and play host to unforgettable moments. Creating liveable, lovable spaces is Nigel’s forte. Zuma

allowed that to be extended to even more senses than before. When he discovered Zuma, he knew it was the perfect addition to his next project, and that it matched the unrivalled quality he promised with every project. From a business perspective, Zuma offers a new opportunity to deliver even more value for Nigel’s customers. He said: “This is top of the range, top of the market quality that adds real value to my customers.” When Nigel’s client was undergoing a large extension including a one-of-a-kind orangerie, he wanted to find a way to turn the large space into an immersive experience that would transform their home. Audiophile-level sound Technologically advanced, but extremely easy to use, the Zuma system is future-proofed, and provided the opportunity to create a soundtrack for this new space, completely hidden within the light fitting. There are no clunky sound units taking up space in the orangerie, just firstclass sound and smart lighting.

Working with Zuma Integration with designs and installation was simple. Zuma worked closely with Nigel to build the best system for the space he was designing. An expert team worked with Alderley Bespoke to orchestrate the ideal placement for Zuma within the new space – a combination of Lumisonic sound and light units, and Luminaire lightonly units. Between the two products, an optimal balance was struck between audio coverage and beautifully

natural lighting. The support from Zuma didn’t stop at the design stage. Any questions or problems mid-install were answered and sorted as soon as possible. Zuma’s senior team were closely involved with the project, offering to do whatever they could to ensure Nigel’s process continued on track and on time.

The results Unlike an aged sound and lighting system, Zuma can be remotely updated to benefit from new technology advances

for many years to come. “My client is simply over the moon with the final outcome,” said Nigel. “More of my partners are beginning to want to offer Zuma too – they see the value immediately.” Zuma systems are easy to set up for customers. Regardless of a client’s comfort level with technology, it is straightforward enough that they can quickly be made fully at ease with the software. It is one of the reasons that Zuma is now a mainstay in the quoting process for Nigel and the team at Alderley Bespoke. They know they can provide a wireless, virtually invisible cherry on the top of the cake for their clients who want to build a space that wows and is now in the plans for multiple projects this year. Meet Trend, one of the world’s oldest startup businesses… For the few in the industry who don’t know, Trend is one of the leading names in tools and accessories for the trade – and has been for nearly 70 years, writes Chris Carter, Marketing Director at Trend Trend led the UK into a brand new world of Routing and built a huge following among woodworkers that exists today. It quickly also became the go-to for routing in the trade, finding favour among carpenters and joiners. But despite a long history, it operates in a way that is as fresh, ground-breaking and enthusiastic as it was at its’ conception. Founded in Watford in 1955, not only is Trend still owned by the same family – the third generation of which are very active members of the team – but also holds dear the values on which the business was founded. What did you do before joining BiKBBI? I have worked at BiKBBI for over 12 years now so, in some ways, it feels like I have never worked elsewhere. Previously, I was a local authority Exchequer Services Manager for Thurrock Council, heading up the sundry debtors, payments, insurance

and administration department. I developed many of the skills I use today in my previous role including organisation, attention to detail and customer service.

What do you find most rewarding about your role? The best thing about my role, without a doubt, is talking to people, and installers in particular. In addition to onboarding and renewals, we regularly make courtesy calls to BiKBBI registered business which is very interesting as you get to know the people behind the documents and registration numbers. It’s always insightful to get views about the industry, the challenges that installation businesses are facing and their ideas on how we can better support their needs. I also get a great sense of satisfaction from helping

installation businesses get their compliance right – knowing that I have personally played a part in reducing the risk to them, their customers and the consumer is very rewarding.

What makes BiKBBI different from other places you’ve worked? We are a small team, which is vastly different from the local authority environment with hundreds of staff in large offices. Because of this, it is vital that we all work together and make sure that we support each other. It means that we are very close as a team and always on hand to help each other.

Tell us something most people might not know about you? I once abseiled down the Thameside Theatre in Grays dressed as Batman’s sidekick, Robin – it was for a local charity and also did a sponsored solo parachute jump to raise funds for Orsett Hospital Radio.

And finally, what are you working on currently? We recently introduced a new team structure which means that I am engaging with our retailers on a more frequent basis so I am currently focused on that, and supporting the wider team on planning for the annual BiKBBI conference and the BiKBBI Awards ceremony.

NOT Just a Household Name A familiar fixture within millions of bathrooms, Triton Showers has been at the forefront of providing customers with energy efficient electric and mixer showering products since 1975. Outlining Triton’s longstanding ambitions Triton’s mission is to cater to customers with shower innovations that offer a cleaner conscience. The manufacturer is committed to being the most sustainable shower brand in the UK and it is this vision and positioning that is driving its strategy, product, service and communication plans. With the aim of being the first name in water and energy heating, the business is laser-focused on inspiring consumers to use water and energy efficiently and enjoyably, with products to suit all budgets.

Prioritising the customer As a proud British manufacturer, Triton became a member of the ‘Made in Britain’ scheme in 2014 and remains passionate and dedicated to delivering style, functionality and value to its customers. Triton’s products have been designed with ease of installation and unrivalled reliability in mind – as well as coming with a one-year parts and labour guarantee. When it comes to showering, Triton believes every drop makes a difference. This is why the manufacturer offers a variety of products to help save water, energy, and money – as well as a handy online water and energy calculator that provides useful hints and tips around consumption, specifically tailored to usage.

Dedicated to driving sustainability

Raising the bar in market innovation As well as an unwavering dedication to quality, Triton continues to lead the way with innovative solutions. The latest milestone for Triton is the launch of its ENVi electric shower. Set apart from other models, ENVi is a first-tomarket concept that empowers customers to make a positive impact on the environment without compromising on quality or style. The new product hosts a control panel which enables users to remotely adjust water temperature, set a timer, and easily monitor water and energy usage. Available in three versatile finishes, the panel accommodates up to six user profiles and features an eco-mode, making it simple for users to reduce water and energy usage by showering for a minute less.

Triton’s commitment to sustainability was recognised with a carbon reduction certification in August 2021, followed by Carbon Neutral status in 2022 and again in 2023. As part of the development of its latest innovation, ENVi, Triton calculated the carbon footprint of the full lifecycle of the shower and offset emissions. As part of this commitment, Triton has invested in climate projects such as tree planting and renewable energy programmes to fully compensate for its emissions. This work has been verified and accredited by ClimatePartner, an independent partner. Other examples of Triton’s tactics include the installation of a new HVAC system at the business’ headquarters and the roll out of electric vehicles across its fleet.
