President’s Report ‘Last Tuesday’s meeting was one of those ‘feel good’ type meetings. Our guest speaker, Paul Cannings dazzled us all with his knowledge of beekeeping. The important thing to come out of it was the vital importance of bees for our whole ecology. As I said at the meeting, it’s wonderful to see a local such as Paul taking such an interest in bees and the incredible knowledge he has

acquired. I hope you all enjoy the honey he has produced, I certainly am. I note that an item on the agenda for our next Board meeting is the suggestion put by Rotarian Bob Selinger that we consider including the Acknowledgement of Country as part of our meeting procedure. It is certainly something I’ve thought about over a period of time and I will certainly be in favour of its introduction. It’s probably not known to many of our members, but we have had present and past members with Aboriginal blood. This is something we should be proud of and celebrate. I will be inviting a couple of the girls from the Biala Aboriginal Hostel to one of our meetings in the near future. Wouldn’t it be a great occasion if that meeting coincided with the introduction of the ‘Acknowledgment of Country’? I received an email from Blake Roderick (DHS teacher) this week regarding their new student councils at the school. This will give us another great opportunity to be involved with the school. I look forward to receiving more details. Our guest speaker at this week’s zoom meeting is Kathryn Iles who will talk about Toastmasters. Given our interest in public speaking, particularly with our youth, this should be an interesting topic. Always bear in mind that we should also invite others to join our meetings and our zoom meetings are no exception. In fact, we should have more success in attracting guests to zoom meetings as from the guest’s point of view, they are more time efficient. Have a great Rotary week, P a g e | 2 FACEBOOK www.facebook.com/belroserotary

VOLUNTEER/GUEST SPEAKER BIO Kathryn Iles I have been a high school English teacher for 27 years. My husband and I have done a fair number of trips through Australia, mostly camping, with and without our kids (who are now in their 20s). We love the remote areas and the people of the outback and are looking forward to spending more time there.

This Day in History - 1923 Howard Carter opens the inner burial chamber of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb and finds the sarcophagus

Tutankhamun's Burial Chamber Found A photo of British archaeologist Howard Carter at the sarcophagus of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun

Artifact Info Photographer: The New York Times Location: Valley of the Kings, Egypt Source: Wikimedia Commons Historical Events on February 16 - On This Day

Historical Context In November 1923, a team led by British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the Egyptian boy king Tutankhamun. This would go on to become the most famous discovery of a pharaoh's tomb, and make Tutankhamun perhaps the most famous pharaoh. After chipping his way into the tomb in November (using a chisel his grandmother had given him on his 17th birthday), Carter and his sponsor Lord Carnarvon spent the next several months meticulously cataloguing the items inside the tomb's antechamber. On February 16, 1923, Carter discovered that the antechamber did in fact lead to Tutankhamun's burial chamber when he opened the sealed doorway inside, and glimpsed the sarcophagus of the pharaoh. Over the years, many legends have emerged around the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, most famously the so-called curse of the pharaohs: that those who disturbed the tomb were doomed to an early death. Among those who died not long after the discovery was the financial backer of the project, Lord Carnarvon, who died in April 1923; A. C. Mace, a member of the excavation team, who died in 1928; Archibald Douglas-Reid, a radiologist who x-rayed Tutankhamun's mummy, died in 1924; and even Howard Carter himself, who died in 1939.
