letter from the EDITOR

Hello, Beautiful , March has officially arrived. With the month of March, many of us will begin to experience a change in seasons. When changes occur in our lives, no matter what kind of a change, we often need some empowerment but we do not end up receiving it. For this month, this changing of the seasons, we wanted to bring you what you most likely are going to need for the road ahead. We are here to EMPOWER you this March. The pages of this issue are filled with empowering stories, empowering quotes, verses and challenges for you to empower those around you. Whenever you receive something good, you get the most benefit from it by sharing it with others. As you become empowered by reading, watching, listening and learning through this magazine, take a nugget or two and share it with one of the people closest to you. If it impacts your life in anyway, it will most likely impact theirs as well. Let’s empower one another this month, ladies. XOXO,

4

What person has really empowered you?

Dr. William Hackett, Jr., a former employer of mine, empowered me in many ways. He taught me to grow as a speaker, a teacher and a life changer. I will forever be grateful to him for all that he did and taught me to do.

What do you do to empower others?

Encouragement is the biggest tool that I use to empower others. I have seen how others encouraging me has been so beneficial in my life. I try to pass on the favor to as many people as I can.

What is your favorite empowering quote?

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. “ Thomas H. Palmer

Not only does she want to discover these things for herself but she desires to share them with anyone willing to watch and listen. Beautiful & Dauntless was birthed out of this desire. She enjoys modeling, acting and singing. She has her own fashion line and partners her business with a jewelry line, Chloe + Isabel. In July of 2016, Karissa published her first book.

EDITOR IN CHIEF, dauntless

Her future plans are to revamp the fashion & entertainment industry with the love, truth and beauty through both her fashion business and Beautiful & Dauntless magazine. Arman loves working out, cooking healthy, dressing up, traveling and he’s also a bit of a gamer. He has no qualms with moving in faith to new destinations and embarking on new adventures in life (as the phrase goes, you only live once!). When it comes down to it, Arman believes life is short and hopes that you become inspired and believe in yourself to do the things that you want in this life and follow your calling.

ASSISTANT EDITOR

Jackie Cullum, 26, is a wife, mom, and Chairperson for the Missions Committee at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Be Be

You. . l u f i t Beau 31

p31 WOMAN SERIES

l r i G

32

) m (E

r e w o P ) To be a woman that empowers, we ourselves have to empower first. If you remember back to the first P31 session in January, about Boss Babes, we discussed the importance of working eagerly, taking care of yourself and your family, and working towards that which you were created for.

33

Mad skills

Being a Boss Babe is all those things and more. It also empowers you to empower those around you. Let’s pick up from where we left off in the Boss Babe session, verse 17. She sets about her work vigorously, and her arms are strong for her task. As she is working away honing her skill, her skill is strengthened. She also becomes stronger in mind and body. Why? She sees that her trading is profitable. She knows that the work she is putting in is bringing in income and it is providing. This empowers her to continue. Knowing is empowering. Not only is her work providing but it is also in demand. (She must be making some spectacular dresses.) All the other people want what she is making. Knowing that people want what you make is very empowering. It is also very crucial when running a business.

34

Don’t give up

When the verse says, “her lamp does not go out at night,” it is saying that she is empowered by the success of her hands and is spurred on to continue in the success. Being able to do something that you love with your life and seeing it become successful is a very empowering feeling. It takes time to get to that place, though. Most people do not just fall into it right away. So, if you are working towards getting to that place, do not give up, but keep your lamp burning at night so you can make it there. If you are already at that place, experiencing the success, take some time to empower those that are still working towards it.

Don’t look down

In verse 19, it talks of the Proverbs 31 woman using the spindle and distaff in her work. We already know that her work is making garments. This is her tool of trade. We also know that she had females servants that worked for her as well. Most people, when they have reached the high point

of success in their field, they hire others to do the work. They just sit back and supervise. The P31 woman is not like that. She finds joy in her skill but she also is an empowering example to her paid servants. She shows them that she is no better than they are and sits right down next to them, doing the work. Imagine how empowered you would feel if your boss would sit and do work with you, instead playing on their phone or on Facebook.

Love thy neighbor

We see that she empowers those who work for her, because she is empowered herself. But she takes it one step further. When she is finished making her garments, she takes them into the marketplace (which was the streets back in those days) and she sells her merchandise. In verse 20, we see that she opens her arms to the poor and needy. The poor and needy hung out at her workplace. They most likely could not afford the goods that

she made. She however did not shun them. She empowered them by treating them as humans. She opened her arms to them. That could mean that she just gave them a hug but knowing this lady, that probably means that she fed them and maybe even provided one of those scarlet coats she sells to keep them warm. Any and all of those things would be empowering to someone in need.

Empower

What can we, as modern day P31 women take away from this? Find empowerment in the work that you set out to do. Empower those that work with you and also those that are trying to make it in the world with their own skills. Empower those that roam the streets looking for food or help. Remember that you are not better than anyone else because of a paycheck. Everyone has a different life and everyone needs empowerment in some form or another.

CHERI GLOVER

Where do you live?

What do you do to empower others?

New York

Since I’ve had unexpected open heart surgery at the age of 27, I now empower people to be courageous. I encourage people to pursue their dreams and not to be afraid of their circumstances. You never know what you are made of until you take a step to see what you are capable of doing. Therefore, your steps can be very rewarding, but you have to make the decision to try by taking one step at a time.

What you do?

Training facilitator and model. What’s your fave food? Italian.

Where can peeps find you on social media?

 /Cheri Glover  @cheri_glover What person has really empowered you?

My mother has always empowered me throughout my life. When I was young she taught me that I could be whatever I desired to be when I grew up. She also taught me that I shouldn’t limit myself in any way, but I should always accomplish my goals.

It aches me to the core. To experience the many forms of beauty that this world has to offer…sights, sounds, people, words. It’s everywhere, it truly is… when I come across it, I crave, I desire, I want to create more of the same. I want to try and explain it. To paint a picture. To capture it in my mind and never forget it.

things by Sara Robillard

It’s been a while since I’ve been inspired like this. And it’s nice to know it’s still within me. But the spark is flickering against elements that would see it die away. Against circumstances beyond control. Against convictions that take precedence over so-called dreams. Against the sheer exhaustion of hanging on to it. And yet, something within me is just dying to break out and bloom… But I still can’t help but be taken in by the beauty of words. To let my heart be lifted by a song. To breathe in the changing air. To love making someone laugh. And everything within me wants to let go and dream a dream, to remember how to hope in something. To quit being so practical and “content.”

Something just needs to break.

Q&A

KENNEY MYERS Where do you live? Houston, Texas What you do? Actor

What’s your fav food? BBQ Sliced Brisket

Where can peeps find you on social media?

 /kennymyers  @kennymyers  @kennymyers What person has really empowered you?

I would have to say without a doubt that my wife has empowered me the most through her love and support. She has stood beside me through so many crazy ideas and life events that it’s impossible to explain. Her self-less and ever-present love is absolutely what grounds me and keeps me moving forward when times are tough (and we all have different trials and tribulations). She has the patience of Job and believe me when I say I put that to the test. She is amazing and I’m the luckiest man alive to have her by my side. I don’t think anyone could possibly empower me more because I know no matter what I do or how successful I am or am not, she is there for me. That’s the ultimate

gift that anyone could ever give you and tremendously empowering. She has been a blessing to me since the day we met and I am so grateful and thankful that God saw fit to bless our marriage with endless love. What do you do to empower others?

I try to really just be the best example I can be of a Christian to those around me (I don’t always succeed with that). However, my goal is to be an honest and loyal coworker, friend, and person. My hope is for people to know that I’ll do what I can to help them (even if that may not always be what they want). In acting that may be running lines together or just supporting another actor, at work it might be just helping the team by making sure they have everything they need to succeed. There really isn’t one specific thing that I do to empower people. I just try to be intentional about helping them achieve their goals or the goals of any team that I am on to the best of my abilities. What is you favorite empowering quote? “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalms 139:14 I think it’s always important for everyone to remember that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. We can all accomplish so much if we put our trust where it belongs and remember that the Lord does some amazing things. Again, it’s not always what we want but we have to have faith and peace knowing that his works are wonderful even if we don’t immediately understand or appreciate them.

dauntless EMPOWER

T

his months Dauntless man is Joseph, from the book of Genesis in the Old Testament. We are focusing on Empowering this month and the dictionary definition that I feel relates to him the most is, “to make someone stronger or more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.” Joseph, the man who dreamed

EMPOWER “to make someone stronger or more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.”

58

If you have not read the story of Joseph, I would encourage you to. It begins in Genesis 37. The hate for Joseph ran deep, amongst his 11 brothers from a young age. Jacob, the father, loved Joseph more than his brothers and they all knew it. They could not say a kind word to him (Genesis 37:4). Joseph

LET GOD WORK IT OUT

by Arman Irani

dreamt twice that he would be ruling over his brothers. He told them his dreams, which was maybe not the wisest move, and they hated him all the more. His brothers hated him so much that they plotted to kill him. First, they threw him into a well. Then a caravan of Ishmaelites traders came along the way, and they decided to keep their hands free of blood, and instead sold him for 20 pieces of silver. The traders took him to Egypt and he was sold to an officer of Pharaohs, the king of Egypt. Even though Joseph was sold, he still had favor with God, because God was still with him, God empowered him. He did not have to worry about anything, his master trusted him with all things. “The Lord began to bless Potiphar’s house for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished,” (Genesis 39:5).

Joseph had full administration over the officer’s house. He could do what he wanted, as he pleased.

A Dauntless man

For when things seem tough...

Joseph was built and handsome. This caused Potiphar’s wife to lust after him. Joseph, being a 59

Dauntless man of God, did not even touch her because he knew it was sinning against God. (P.S. this still holds true for today). Since she could not get him to sleep with her, she made a sexual advance on Joseph. He ran away but his cloak was left behind. This Jezebel-spirited woman lied to her husband and the guards about Joseph raping her. Puh-lease! Just because she could not get any, she had to go and lie about it (but that is another story for another day). As any man would, Potiphar believed his wife and was furious. He threw Joseph into prison.

A faith that endured

Talking about empowerment, the Lord was faithful and with Joseph even in prison. “But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden, (Genesis 39:21).

Talk about empowerment! Instead of allowing Joseph to get weakened or discouraged by his circumstances (being hated by his brothers, being thrown in a pit, having your death faked by your brothers, having a hoe try to make you stumble and being thrown in prison) God was there for him and made him more confident and gave him authority and power everywhere he was placed. God empowered him through each circumstance. 60

After being in prison, Joseph was given interpretation from God for two different men’s dreams. They both came true. Years later, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, had two dreams that disturbed him. Pharaoh called for all the wise men and magicians in Egypt. None of them were able to help him with his dreams because they were not empowered by God. At their very best, if they were able to say anything, it was just a bunch of lies because only God can reveal the truth. Then one of the two men that had been in prison with Joseph and had his dream interpreted, remembered Joseph after he was out of prison. Joseph was brought to Pharaoh and he interpreted the dreams. God once again empowered Joseph through these dream interpretations coming true and Pharaoh set Joseph as second in command over Egypt. So what have we learned from the story of Joseph? When things seem tough, when life situations have you down, remember that God is always on your side and he is cheering for you to do the right thing. He empowers us all by his words in the Bible and his workings in our lives. Just because you cannot see the final destination, don’t allow fear to stop you from what God has for your life. Stay Dauntless, bros! If you prefer to listen instead of read, this study is now available on Youtube. Click the icon.

letter from the EDITOR

Hello, Dauntless, This month we are all about empowering our readers. I have personally felt God empower me this past month. He has helped me find out how much of a man I am. He has produced in me a strong work ethic and most importantly he has shown me that he is true to his word, even to this day. A quick testimony: I did not have a car to get me around town or to work for the past two months. I had been praying to God for help with it as well as getting a job and he has provided both. Both provisions were more than I could even think or hope for. I am truly grateful and honored to call him my God. I challenge you this month to allow God to empower you. Ask him what you need, what he has promised and watch him come through for you. Peace out,

74

What person has really empowered you? Jesus is the only one.

What do you do to empower others?

Live and lead my life by example, not just by talking. Everyone can learn to talk the talk but walking the walk is what matter most.

DAUN LESS Arman Irani Editor In Chief

Jackie Cullum Assistant Editor

Sara Robillard Graphic Designer & Content Contributor

ABOUT DAUNTLESS The second half of this magazine is now being taken over by guys, for guys. Since the creation of this magazine, January 2017, we have excelled at offering real life stories, advice and insight into daily matters. Our writers share what is on their heart in order to bring some life to your current situation. Up to this point, much of the material has been more “lady focused” but we hate to leave out our male counterparts, as they need special rays of light to impact their life as well. In May 2017, after receiving much feedback from males asking for more content geared towards them, our wheels started turning. We came up with the idea of having the dual magazine, but we need a name. After conducting a poll on social media, we were given some insight as to what a guy might prefer to be thought of as, and DAUNTLESS was the winner. Below are a few of the reasons as to why Dauntless is now the name of the second half of our e-mag. So, gentlemen, as you are reading, think of yourself in these terms: “Dauntless means, ‘I am BOLD, COURAGEOUS, and GALLANT. Which trumps all other choices. IMHO.” Larry “Dauntless for sure. Dauntless means, ‘Showing FEARLESSNESS and DETERMINATION.’ That is how I would like to be defined.” Arman follow dauntless
