ello,

BEAUTIFUL, If you haven’t noticed already, the month of October was given a rich, warm color: brown. Brown has a lot of great meaning to it, the first of which is that it stimulates the appetite. That gets me excited because I love baking! Now that fall is here, so is baking season. I have cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, and so much more on my list of yummy treats that I want to make and eat. I have been searching for the healthiest and tastiest form of these goodies (and I even shared one of my faves in this magazine issue!) Brown also means steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, dependability, and health. Several of these topics will be touched on and discussed within this issue. Lastly, the color brown offers a sense of peace. This is what I really would like for you to be able to take away from this magazine issue. I hope that you find peace as you are reading through the pages of the magazine. May the peace wash over you and calm you as we head into the craziest season of the year. Peace has been something I have been in need of over the past month. As I am writing these words, I am sharing the peace that has enveloped my mind and my body with you. Peace be with you, beauties! XOXO,

ASSISTANT EDITOR

FASHION EDITOR

Arnette German is a native of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. She took her leap of faith and finally decided to yield to her passion for fashion by enrolling in the online Graduate Program of Fashion Journalism at Academy Art University in San Francisco, California. No stranger to the stage, Arnette is a member of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe in Sarasota, Florida. Presently calling Bradenton, Florida home, Arnette spends her free time either volunteering at her local church and spending time with friends and family, especially her best friend.

ART DIRECTOR & CONTENT CONTRIBUTOR

Arnette is a foodie and a lover of nature and the arts. Life is definitely, in some shape or form and fashion, being lived to the fullest. Sara Robillard spent the first part of her life growing up in New England, and about a decade ago, she found herself transplanted to Central Florida. Sara is currently working in a full-time marketing position, as well as attending college as a part-time student to earn a degree in graphic design. She has been working in graphic art professionally for over five years (unprofessionally for almost a decade) and truly enjoys creating and telling stories. When she’s not working or doing homework, Sara is either doing something artsy, enjoying the outdoors, traveling, reading, writing or lounging with her cat, Ruxin.

FEATURE STORY GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Xiomara Montalvo is a 21 year old university student that lives and breathes all things artistic. She has lived in Central Florida for half of her life, but is originally from Michigan. Xiomara will be graduating soon with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design with a concentration in Digital Imaging. Her goal after graduation is to work as a Layout Designer for magazines. It is not by happenstance that harmony and balance are symbolically girded in the month of October. Being one of the most anticipated months, courtesy of Halloween, symmetry is exhibited in the sense of the culture and the emotions identified within this melodramatic holiday. The adrenaline rushes, the earwrenching screams from haunted houses, the eager trick-or-treaters, and the adult Halloween costume parties all portray synchrony. Perfect coordination is even displayed through the plethora of inviting and warm shades of fall appearing in nature by adorning the leaves on the trees. Inviting and warm shades are also found in fall fashion: rustic orange, honeycomb yellow, flirtatious fuchsia, antique copper, leprechaun green, merlot burgundy, regal purple, and barnyard red. These tones colorfully solidify the theme of agreement, but the most identifiable and popular tone for fall that signifies stability, wholesomeness, and order is brown (I dubbed it unison brown). Ironically, all of the aforementioned color shades embody one of the two birthstones for October: Tourmaline. Tourmaline not only “...balances yin and yang qualities but also facilitates in uniting the physical and the spiritual worlds together as well.” Yes, unison brown is an aesthetic part of this vibrant gemstone that lends a helping hand from a health aspect by “...reducing stress and detoxing the blood stream from hidden toxins.” It is elegantly apparent that harmony and balance are a part of every aspect associated with the month of October. Interestingly enough, unison brown is another hue that perfectly supports the Biblical significance for the number ten (October being the tenth month of the year). Numerically, ten means “a completed course of time, completeness of divine order or a symbol matter of harmony.” Additionally, brown symbolically represents “...elegance, seriousness, security, support, foundation, groundness, health and warmth.”

12

13

Through the symbolism of the color brown, tourmaline and the number ten give a sense of completeness of divine order and are an outright example of the symbol matter of harmony. Yet, as different as these hues of browns are, Bobby Brown (American Singer and Songwriter) and Bobbi Brown (Professional Makeup Artist and Founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics) both offer similar views on harmony and balance in obtaining wholesomeness and groundness. Entertainer Bobby Brown stated, “I feel that the simplicity of life is just being yourself.” Whereas, Bobbi Brown stated, “beauty is the result of realizing what is special about you and not focusing on the things you do not like. Knowing what you can do at any given time to look and feel better is pretty powerful.” Simply put, your balance and harmony in life all boils down to you--it comes from you. Knowing you, understanding you, embracing you, and loving you. Once all of those actions have been simultaneously performed, then you will see and hear the beauty in the unison of brown.

inBETWEEN

a letter to a younger me by Sara Robillard

H

ello, sweet girl. You’re going to be ok. There is an end to this hell. There is hope. Yes, that’s right: you can believe things will change. You can believe things will get better. I know it’s hard. Hope is such a foreign concept to you. You don’t know what it means to feel safe or genuinely loved. That guilt weighing you down right now isn’t yours to carry. That hatred you have —that hatred that is eating you alive — is holding you back from the change you so desperately desire. But you can’t see that. How can you? You are going to make a difference. You are going to pursue and accomplish things people told you would never could. And you will learn how to trust again.

46

Not to say that you won’t feel hurt. You will get disappointed. You will feel so hopeless that you will want to die, even when there is so much to live for. But just

know there is hope. In your mistakes, in your disappointments, in every breath— there is hope. I know you feel dirty. But you are pure. It’s not your fault. I see your despair. I see your attempts to end it, but there is always something holding you back… that’s me. I’m here because something deep down inside you wasn’t going to let you give up. There is still a lot that even I don’t know, and a lot that I wish I could tell you. You will be told countless times that God knows the desires of your heart. And He does. He knows what is best for you. You’re going to let go of the idea of that hero that is going to come and whisk you away and make you feel better — because it’s not going to happen. I know it’s helping you survive right now, but you will learn how to stand on your own two feet. You are going to spend a lot of time figuring out who you are. You’re going to have to be brave on your own. You’re going to have to fight. I know you

want to be carried, but you are going to have to open your mind to the prospect of having to do some carrying yourself. There’s a lot of emotions you are going to have to learn how to be comfortable feeling. But it’s going to be OK. Things are going to change. While all you are experiencing right now has you feeling trapped, know that there will be a day where you will look back and question whether or not it was even real. But you will always know it was because of the scars I still feel. Because of the nightmares I still have. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. One day, you will find yourself standing on top of a mountain and realize that I exist. Yes, I exist now. And you are a part of me. A beautiful part of me. You are the part that makes everything I think, see and feel now so much more valuable, so much more

precious. You are worth knowing. You are going to make a difference with your life you won’t be able to fully know or measure. You will learn how to love. And you will know what it feels like to have someone fall in love with you. It will be beautiful, dear one. Because you are special, you have so much to give. You are worth being invested in. Until then, He will be your everything. You will come to know Him in that way you thought was impossible for you. You will learn how to value the ordinary. You will see the profound in the simple. You will find beauty when there is none. You will change for the better; in every moment of every day, He will show you how to live. To live the way you’ve always wanted. I know you’re scared. I know you’re lonely. I know you don’t believe me. But I’m that little voice inside you in that moment you want to give up. And I promise you —it is going to change. Love,

future

you

PROFILE:

My name is Gage Sellers and I’m 24 years old. I was born in Melbourne, Florida and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. Living in the sunshine state, I love doing things outdoors. Some of my favorite things to do when I have free time include surfing, skateboarding and soccer. Most of my days are spent outside because of my job. In September of 2017 I started a landscaping company due to the constant dead-end jobs I was working at. I never dreamed I would be in this business, but over time helping people with their yards developed into a full-time job. When I’m not outside I typically spend my time playing guitar and reading. Music is one of my biggest hobbies and it’s what I currently go to school for. I’ve always believed that being optimistic and open minded to your future allows doors to open that you may have never seen. Pursue what you’re passionate for, and remember to enjoy every moment in life no matter how big or small.

Ingredients: 1 ½ cups of almond flour ¼ teaspoon of baking powder ¼ teaspoon of sea salt 1/3 cup of agave syrup 1 egg ½ cup of real butter ½ tablespoon of vanilla extract 1 dark chocolate bar (80% or higher cocoa) Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 355 degrees. 2. Combine all the dry ingredients in one bowl and mix well. 3. Melt the butter on the stove and then pour into a separate bowl. Add the egg, agave, and vanilla. Stir well. 4. After both the wet and the dry mix have been mixed thoroughly in their separate bowls, combine them and mix well. 5. Break up the chocolate bar into small chunks (use a hammer if you feel you can safely pound the bar into smaller pieces). 6. Add the chocolate chunks into the mix and stir once again. 7. On a cookie sheet, roll the mix into one inch balls and spread them out evenly, giving about one inch room to expand. 8. Place in the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown on the top. The longer you keep them in the oven, the more of a crunchy cookie they will become. Yields: 13 to 15 cookies

Movie of the Month

Movie of the Month

his was surprisingly a great movie! There was not much hype or advertisements before the release of this movie so we did not quite know what to expect. Watching this movie was like going on the incredible journey of a boy becoming a man. You could feel his fear when the trials began and then you felt the triumph as he began to walk more and more into the man he was becoming. The movie is set many hundreds of years back, before there were houses, and cars and the modern day luxuries that we have at our fingertips now. This was back in the era of hunter-gatherers, when the village would hunt huge animals together to feed the whole village through the winter.

66

The graphics and slow motion shots were phenomenal in this movie. There were a few moments that were too graphic for those with weaker stomachs. It is definitely a manly movie. However, everyone can enjoy the beautiful story between the wolf and the main character as they learn to see each other as allies and not enemies. They work together to get each other to safety. It is a very touching story and comes very recommended by us both. Make sure to watch our reviews of other movies hitting the big screen.

letter from the EDITOR

ello, H GENTLEMEN,

Hope you all are doing awesome no matter what your current situation looks like. The reality is that you are still alive, able to read this, and hopefully, living in gratitude for this gift of life. Remember that the early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Learn from your mistakes; don’t repeat the same thing trying to get different results. This months color is brown, which stands for simplicity, dependability and health. Strive to take action steps in these areas of your life. Work on decluttering your life in the physical space as well as the mental space of your mind; strive for simplicity. You are not a robot, you’re a human being with feelings, needs and wants. Remember this in your daily walk in life and make time for you away from the stressors of life to reflect. I personally love going to gym as my anchor, just like the Rock says. It is my place of enjoyment where I can challenge the guy in the mirror to push 70

past the limits he thought he had, and over time, through the ups and downs of life, walk out of the battle: Dauntless no matter the outcome. Be dependable to at least one person this month besides yourself. Maybe help that old man/old woman cross the street, or maybe just be more dependable to your significant other, don’t make excuses for not getting things done - find a way. Life is too short to be running in circles and not having a target or goal, and making excuses. Not being dependable will make you weak and unable to stand firm when the road is rocky. As for health, eat right! It’s not rocket science. Your bodies were designed to be amazing works of art, so if your not happy with what you see, start doing something about it. Eating more unhealthy & processed things will not fuel the body with the right nutrients, amino acids and minerals you need to obtain optimal functioning of your Dauntless self. Learn to cook if you need help in this area we will be launching a Youtube with

cooking healthy meals. However, the best way to learn is just start small, build your confidence. Maybe it’s just a salad with vinaigrette and olive oil, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots, but it’s a start. Take control of your own life or just be a beta male and follow the lead of others. A closing thought: life isn’t supposed to be easy, if it was, how would you build the character needed to withstand the trials and battles of daily life? You were created to be a Man act like one. Suit up and take action in your life to be the best version of yourself!

I would love to hear from you guys on what you’d like to read about. Drop us an email at beautifulndauntless@gmail.com (Type in the subject line: Dauntless) 71

Sara Robillard Art Director

ABOUT DAUNTLESS The second half of this magazine is now being taken over by guys, for guys. Since the creation of this magazine, January 2017, we have excelled at offering real life stories, advice and insight into daily matters. Our writers share what is on their heart in order to bring some life to your current situation. Up to this point, much of the material has been more “lady focused” but we hate to leave out our male counterparts, as they need special rays of light to impact their life as well. In May 2017, after receiving much feedback from males asking for more content geared towards them, our wheels started turning. We came up with the idea of having the dual magazine, but we need a name. After conducting a poll on social media, we were given some insight as to what a guy might prefer to be thought of as, and DAUNTLESS was the winner. Below are a few of the reasons as to why Dauntless is now the name of the second half of our e-mag. So, gentlemen, as you are reading, think of yourself in these terms: “Dauntless means, ‘I am BOLD, COURAGEOUS, and GALLANT. Which trumps all other choices. IMHO.” Larry “Dauntless for sure. Dauntless means, ‘Showing FEARLESSNESS and DETERMINATION.’ That is how I would like to be defined.” Arman
