BDP Quadrangle is one of Canada’s leading full-service architecture, design and urbanism practices. Based in Toronto, Canada, our expertise spans designing for the full spectrum of the built environment including mixed-use, residential, workplace, retail, transit, media, education and health. We are also the North American headquarters of BDP, which was founded in 1961 in the UK as an interdisciplinary design resource. Today, BDP comprises 1,300 people, operating from local studios across three continents. Transcending its growth, the studio’s philosophy has remained the same: to work as a multidisciplinary collective, applying knowledge and expertise to create ambitious projects at every scale. Quadrangle, a 35-year old practice well-known in North America for its design, business sense and integrity, joined BDP in 2019 and became BDP Quadrangle in 2020. Our 200-person studio strives to create places that foster wellbeing, inclusivity and sustainable futures. Together, we can offer our clients a broadened perspective, greater expertise, expanded services and resources, while continuing to do things the way we always have. Above all else, we design for the good of clients and communities.

Media Our media team creates exciting environments that support the creative output of the entertainment industry bringing design excellence, acoustical performance and technical integration within content-secure facilities. We are building the spaces where digital creatives want to work. We enjoy a reputation of being world leading media environment designers though facilities in all aspects of content creation, production and the creative workplaces that support them. We work with some of the most respected media groups in the industry such as Netflix, Hudson Pacific, Hackman Capital, Rogers Media, Deluxe and both the BBC and CBC. Film + Television Studios Stages have been around since the beginning of the film industry in the 19th century. In a world where entertainment is now across all consumption platforms, feeding a global appetite for increasingly more content, production centres for film and television can’t be built fast enough. We are working with industry leading investors, developers and operators across the sector to create innovative fast-track delivery processes to meet the demands of an exponentially growing sector. These structures typically require very tall and wide-open spans to allow for the building of complex large sets. Stages have also become smarter as the technology for creating content has become more sophisticated such as specialized motion capture stages. The studio lots of the 20th century have become campuses of stages along with the traditional and emerging support spaces they depend upon. We specialize in developing conceptual feasibility through to multi-phased build-outs for film and TV studios.

Pre + Post Production Pre-viz and post-production spaces can be stand alone facilities and are increasingly forming part of consolidated media hubs to allow for seamless content creation. These types of facilities are a particular specialty of BDP Quadrangle, involving the most challenging aspects of adaptive reuse, renovation and technology integration, often combined with the needs of creative workplaces and large-scale data management. We have enjoyed working with several post-production specialist companies and departments within larger organizations such as Deluxe, Netflix and Rogers Media. We have built facilities for pre-visualization and animation companies as well as 3D conversion and full sound and vision post facilities in Canada and the US.

Broadcast BDP Quadrangle started our media environments group with a pioneering broadcast facility, the Chum-City building at 299 Queen Street West in Toronto. The vision of Moses Znaimer, founder of Citytv, was to create a “building that would shoot itself” by breaking down the fortress of the traditional, inwardly-focused television studio as well as making the surrounding streets into a shooting environment. Citytv and its many music, culture and news channels broke new ground by making the entire 299 Queen West facility into a shooting space. POV videographers and publicly accessible recording space Speakers Corner, made the terracotta clad heritage structure an iconic catalyst for neighbourhood regeneration, landing it with the designation as the second hippest district in the world, second only to Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa according to Vogue magazine. We have since gone on to work with many private and public broadcasters. We have built everything from single radio studios in remote communities to the recently completed new headquarters for the Canadian Broadcast Centre consolidated French language services at the Maison Radio Canada in Montreal.

Creative Workplace The ingenuity and creative force of an industry that informs and entertains requires great workplaces. Beyond the technical requirements of media environments, the specialized facilities will always need administrative and creative support spaces as part of their makeup. The design of creative workplaces, particularly those that support production facilities, need to foster creativity, comfort and productivity. They must generate emotional comfort and reduce stress. These spaces must be high-performing yet feel informal and inspiring as the workforce in these industries work under intense pressure for long hours. Our media group is fully integrated with our interior design group and can draw on BDP Quadrangle’s unique expertise in lighting, wayfinding and graphics to design holistically. The future of work, and by extension, the workplace, has been an intriguing discussion since March of 2020. The entertainment industry was among the first to pivot and create new working methodologies to allow productions to continue. We have been doing more than imagining how the design of workplace can move beyond the fear of infection to re-imagining how we work and what space must do to accommodate a new normal. In this context, we design workplaces that reinforce culture and brand, promote wellness and accessibility, and leverage smart technologies to support comfort and innovation. We are designing and building our own studio in 2021-22 to test and prove new hybrid work environments in a creative industry.

Data Centres Supporting advances in digital technology and capacity, data centres have become both the backbone of a studio facility providing high-capacity fibre network from stages and post-production offices and standalone data centres. Both large and small house raw media for digital streaming and data process and storage. All modern industry now depends on some form of data management. From small IDF closets to large racking warehouses, data centres have become the smart big boxes on the landscape. Data centres are a critical part of any businesses operation and can be created within an existing facility, or be built as new purpose-built facilities. Data centres are designed to be fully redundant in electrical service, cooling and data connections. We understand the critical nature of these types of projects and we have developed strong working relationships with leading consultants. Understanding the business goals, local codes and the needs of a given market are key to making these projects a success.
